REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO The project is located in the Streeterville neighborhood adjacent to the Northwestern medical campus. The program includes inpatient and outpatient services, medical offices, and public areas for patient families and friends. Retail space and a hotel for future expansion have been added to create a mixed-use building that provides a better experience for visitors. Inpatient services are divided into seven “neighborhoods each focused on a particular discipline. Collaboration between these disciplines is essential to unifying the research component of the building. The primary architectural goal of the project is to generate an integrative design that combines the architectural, structural, and mechanical systems into one unit. In conjunction with this is the goal to create the best possible experience for building visitors whether they be patients, family, or RIC employees. Analysis on site, climate, and building systems has been completed to make these goals a realization. The RIC mission is to provide the highest-quality patient care through integrated research, scientific discovery, and education for the purpose of maximizing the recovery of the individuals in their care. With integration at its core, this project works to produce a seamless medical research facility that will be a significant asset to the city. [Complete Project drawings are available upon request]

CASABLANCA [MARKET SQUARE] Strengthening the value of community and developing an ethical stance towards the environment, The Market is an attempt to link the cultural, social and economic agendas into a holistic sustainable built environment which can potentially activate and inspire a community to rebuild. Strengthening the idea of the in-between everyday spaces for the development of the community. Embedded in the spatial strategy is a language that translates local cultrual patterns and practices into a visual and spatial language. The language is the resultant of cultural concepts of markets in the region. Grounded explores the possibility of amplifying the meaning and the potential of the public realm as part of a strategy for revitalizing a community limited by social and economic inequities.

MIDWEST CULTURAL MUSEUM The Midwest covers a large portion of the United States. Though it is grouped as an area, it is actually a very diverse section. The Museum is an attempt to show the distinctions between 12 different types of landscapes in the midwest by planting different types of agrobiology into the ’contours’.

The Site, Willard Aiport, is largely exposed to the sun. Also the landscape is completely flat, making it a very windy area. Both sun and wind are factors to the design concept. Due to high wind speeds, from the northwest and southeast, the design should be the least resistant to wind, a Sphere-like shape. The next step was program location. One of the requirements states that most porgrams within the building has to have access to the hangar; therefore, making the hangar the main focus of the facility. Using the hangar as the focus, The other programs were extruded out and encricles the hangar (everything faces towards the Hangar. The program is also split into two; one side is clean (classrooms and offices, while the other side are shops, storage, and maintenance).

The next step was to utilize the solar energy available on the site by tilting the roofs of the program towards the direction of the sunpath.

The entry way and the parking area revolves a different focal point. By doing this, it creates a welcoming area for people to enter.

CHICAGO IS A CITY FULL OF SKYSCRAPERS. THESE SKYSCRAPERS GIVE MAGNIFICENT VIEWS ON CHICAGO WHEN YOU’RE UP THERE. THUS, ONE WAY TO ACHIEVE A FEELING OF BEING HIGH UP WITHOUT COMPETING WITH THE OTHER SKYSCRAPERS IN TERMS OF PHYSICAL HEIGHT IS TO OVERHANG THE BUILDING FROM ITS BASE. AT THE TOP OF THE BUILDING IS A STRUCTURAL CROWN WHICH HOLDS PART OF OF THE STRUCTURAL LOAD FOR THE SUSPENDED PART OF THE BUILDING.

THE FORM OF THE APARTMENT WAS DESIGNED BY FOLLOWING THE PROJECT GUIDELINES. AND ASWELL AS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SITE LOCATION, AT A CORNER OF AN INTERSECTION.

DOWNTOWN CHAMPAIGN MIXED-USE RESIDENTIAL TYPICAL ROOMS

OUR DESIGN CONCEPT OF THE URBAN INFILL IS THE IDEA THAT DOWNTOWN CHAMPAIGN HAS CONTINUED TO DEVELOP STEP BY STEP LIKE STAIRS. WE THEN TOOK THE MIDDLE PORTION OF THE STAIRS AND INVERTED THE STEPS TO DIVIDE THE MASS INTO THREE SECTIONS.

KICKAPOO INFORMATION CENTER THIS PROJECT IS A INFORMATION CENTER LOCATED AT KICKAPOO STATE PARK. CONNECTED TO THE PREVIOUS PROJECT, I CARRIED OVER THE IDEA OF THE H2O CYCLE OF SOLID LIQUID AND GAS. EACH OF THE SECTIONS REPRESENT THE THREE PROPERTIES OF H2O. THESE THREE SECTIONS ARE THEN ENCLOSED BY A CANOPY, CREATING A GATHERING AREA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INFORMATION CENTER. 4
