BeautiFul BUILDINGS Heritage buildings set the scene in Bendigo, showcasing goldrush grandeur and world-class architecture. GOLDRUSH GRANDEUR The unusual combination of grand goldrush-era public buildings, an intact 19th century commercial district, Sacred Heart Cathedral and a century old park ranks Bendigo as one of Australia’s most impressive regional centres. Fine public buildings such as the Bendigo Town Hall (1885), Bendigo Post Office (1887), The School of Mines (1887), The Capital Theatre (1889), Bendigo Art Gallery (1887) and the Law Courts (1896) transformed the city following the discovery of gold.

EUROPEAN OPULENCE The prolific work of German architects gave Bendigo much of its architectural grandeur reminiscent of great European cities. European influences can also be found in the names and layout of other Bendigo landmarks such as Rosalind Park, Charing Cross and Alexandra Fountain to name a few. CONTEMPORARY FLAIR In recent years, many of Bendigo’s historic buildings have undergone elaborate restorations to bring them back to their former glory. Wine bars, restaurants, underground jazz bars, modern accommodation and even our Bendigo Visitor Centre can now be found amongst these buildings.

The Life’s a Dish concept is a simple yet beautiful one, giving food lovers the opportunity to purchase a unique hand-painted plate from Bendigo Pottery as a souvenir of a memorable, central Victorian dining experience. In conjunction with the Life’s a Dish program, each restaurant will offer a regular ‘plat de la saison’ (plate of the season) meal consisting of produce and ingredients sourced locally.

Food Fossicking

There’s a focus in Bendigo on knowing and sharing the stories of where local produce has come from.

Food FOSSICKING Food Fossicking

A Food Fossickers network involves local people who are passionate about the important role food plays in a healthy functioning society. The group wants to inform people about where their food has come from, and to share the stories of those who put it on the table. Food Fossickers are keen to put a face to the local farmers, food and beverage growers, producers, distributors, retailers, cafés, pubs, restaurants, butchers, bakeries and more. A wander around Bendigo reveals that streets and laneways are bustling with things that foodies love to find. It’s an emerging scene that’s all about locally roasted coffee, locally grown produce, gelato, boutique beers, regional wines and gourmet flair.

Shiraz, and more Heathcote’s history began with vineyards established in the late 1850’s and 1860’s during the Gold Rush. However, vineyards had disappeared by the 1920’s and it was not until the late 1960’s that viticultural activity recommenced. Today, the Heathcote region spans approximately 100 kilometres from north to south and 40 kilometres from east to west, and is home to over 100 vineyards. Renowned for its complex, rich and elegant Shiraz, Heathcote also produces excellent wines from other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Marsanne and Viognier. This is intimate, grassroots winemaking; small producers handcrafting their wines; nurturing them from the vineyard to the bottle, and every step along the way. Just 90 minutes north of Melbourne, visiting Heathcote wineries will be a rewarding experience.

However, there are no parking fees in Greater Bendigo on the weekend but time restrictions still apply so you need to check the signage near where you park. The following all day car parks which are on the outer perimeter of the CBD are $2.50 or $1.30 per hour: Tom Flood Sports Centre, Queen Elizabeth Oval, McLaren Street and Park Road. The Hargreaves Street (CBD) multi-storey carpark is $1.30 per hour, or $6.50 all day. The Edward Street multi-storey carpark is $1.30 per hour, or $7.00 per day, with the first 90 minutes free once a day. Long vehicle parking is marked on the CBD map (Page 104). There are a number of one hour parking bays directly in front of the Visitor Centre and half hour bays next to the Visitor Centre in Sidney Myer Place.

The City of Great Bendigo would like to acknowledge that we are meeting on Jaara Country of which the members and Elders of the Jaara people of the Dja Dja Wurrung Community and their forebears are the Traditional Owners and have been custodians for many centuries and have performed age old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal. We acknowledge their living culture and their unique role in the life of this region.
