FL - A serious motor vehicle crash at Oakhurst and 86 Avenue Seminole occurred on August 4th.

City of Seminole and Pinellas Suncoast firefighters worked swiftly to extricate an 84 year old , who was trapped in his vehicle after a crash. The unidentified motorist was the sole occupant of the vehicle that was struck by a large pickup truck.

CHIEF RICKY PHILLIPS ELBA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT

Out of service engine involved in wreck Arab, AL. An out of service engine was involved in a two vehicle wreck on US Highway 231 in Arab just before lunch on Friday, September 4th. The truck was turning onto Hwy 231 when it was struck by a car traveling south on the highway.

Arab Fire, Samaritan EMS and Arab Police worked the incident, which required some extrication to free the driver of the blazer. The driver of the engine was not injured. Arab Police are investigating.

Working structure battled by Elba On May 9th at approximately 2:05 p.m., Elba Fire Department was dispatched to a working structure fire on Herman Driggers Drive.

Units enroute to the station reported heavy smoke visible and called for mutual aid assistance for manpower from Five Star and New Brockton Fire Departments due to outside temperatures.

Within a few minutes of dispatch, Engine 1 arrived on scene to find a single story, single family, tin roofed, wood framed home with the B side of the structure fully involved in fire, with the woods on the B side on fire also.

Engine 1 established command and started fire attack. Engine 3 ar-

JUMP TO FILE #080615104 rived and laid a supply line in from the closest hydrant. Truck 2 and Truck 5 arrived shortly after and all crews went to work.

Crews deployed one and three quarter inch hand lines to the B side of the structure and into the interior through the front while a two and a half hand line was deployed to the rear. Crews made a quick knockdown on the fire then started salvage and overhaul.

The home was a total loss yet some of the occupants' possessions on the D side of the structure were salvageable.

Shortly after arrival on the fire ground Elba Fire units were dispatched to a three vehicle accident on Highway 84 East, New Brockton Fire Department sent one of their trucks that was responding to the structure fire and Truck 2 broke loose to respond. Command 1 advised minor injuries to cancel and return to the fire grounds that New Brockton would handle the MVA. All Elba Fire units fully returned to service at approximately 7:45 p.m. Assisting departments included, Five Star FD, New Brockton FD, Elba Police, Coffee County EMS, and Zion Chapel FD - ELBA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT

ROGERSVILLE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT

Fully involved vehicle Rogersville firefighters responded to US Highway 72 East to a fully involved motor vehicle and wheat field fire on June 7th. Engine 15A, Tanker 15 and Bruch 15A responded. The fire quickly brought under control within ten minutes.

Fire damages historic L-Rancho Cafe Arab, AL. A passerby made a call to the Marshall County 911 center reporting smoke and flames coming from the back of the LRancho at 9:44 a.m. this morning, August 30th, in downtown Arab.

When the crews arrived less than three minutes of the initial call they reported flames were visible through the roof.

Captain Blake Isom began coordinating the scene while Lieutenant Zack Davis took a crew inside the building to extinguish the fire.

An All-Call was sent out calling all off duty firefighters to the fire scene. Four-C VFD, Samaritan EMS and Arab Police all worked the scene until 11:15 a.m.

JUMP TO FILE #083015105 The fire began in the kitchen area of the cafe. There was major fire damage to the kitchen with heavy smoke damage throughout the dining area.

It appears that the fire started around the griddle, but a more thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.

A total of four fire apparatus and 16 firefighters were on the scene.

No one was injured.

Idaho: Terry K. Sonner, 33 Rank: Wildland Full-Time Fire Operations Supervisor Incident Date: June 10, 2015 Death Date: June 10, 2015 Fire Department: Boise District Bureau of Land Management Initial Summary: Fire Operations Supervisor Sonner collapsed after he and his fire crew finished physical training at the Hammett Guard Station, Idaho. Fellow firefighters initiated medical treatment on scene but Sonner succumbed to a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported.

Wisconsin: Michael P. Miller, 45 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: June 20, 2015 Death Date: June 20, 2015 Fire Department: Green Bay Metro Fire Department Initial Summary: Lieutenant Miller was found collapsed on the floor in the fire station near his bunk in the early morning hours of June 20, 2015, and was quickly attended to by other department members who found no vitals signs present.

Lieutenant Miller was pronounced deceased in the location found at 04:55AM. Lieutenant Miller was working a 24 hour shift and had responded to his last alarm, an EMS call, several hours earlier. The nature and cause of fatal injury is still to be determined.

Colorado: John Whelan, 46 Rank: Engineer Incident Date: June 28, 2015 Death Date: July 15, 2015 Fire Department: Denver Fire Department Initial Summary: On June 28, while checking for extension from a dumpster fire, Engineer Whelan was critically injured when a skylight collapsed and he fell through the roof of an abandoned building at 3860 Blake Street. Whelan was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital for medical care including several surgeries. On July 15, several days after being released from the hospital to recover at home, Engineer Whelan was taken to St. Anthony North Health Campus with shortness of breath where, less than an hour later, he passed away from medical complications.

Pennsylvania: Melissa “Missy” Doll, 41 Rank: Fire Police Officer Incident Date: July 15, 2015 Death Date: July 16, 2015 Fire Department: Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Fire Police Officer Doll passed away from an apparent cardiac arrest on July 16 after responding to a mutual aid structure fire late the night before.

North Carolina: James Alan Hicks, 44 Rank: Captain Incident Date: July 26, 2015 Death Date: July 27, 2015 Fire Department: North Carolina Air National Guard Fire and Emergency Services Initial Summary: Captain Hicks was found unresponsive in his fire department bunkroom several hours after responding to a mutual aid structure fire at 39025 Kemp Road, Albemarle. Captain Hicks was treated by fellow firefighters and other responders but was pronounced deceased at the fire house. The nature and cause of fatal injury is still to be determined by authorities.

South Carolina: Tyron Weston, 51 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: July 3, 2015 Death Date: July 26, 2015 Fire Department: Columbia Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Weston fell ill while on shift on July 3, 2015. During his recovery, Firefighter Weston passed away on the morning of Sunday, July 26, 2015. The nature and cause of fatal injury are still to be determined.

California: David “Dave” Ruhl, 38 Rank: Acting Assistant District Fire Management Officer Incident Date: July 30, 2015

Death Date: July 30, 2015 Fire Department: Big Valley Ranger District of the Modoc National Forest Initial Summary: Acting Assistant District Fire Management Officer Ruhl was reported missing during the initial fire attack on the Frog Fire Wildfire in the Modoc National Forest. The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office was called for assistance in searching for the missing firefighter. Search and rescue personnel started the initial search at approximately 2000hrs and continued until about midnight when it was halted because of hazardous fire conditions. Efforts began again at 0600hrs, July 31, and continued until Captain Ruhl’s body was discovered at 0917hrs. The incident remains under investigation by local, state, and national authorities.

California: Michael "Mike" Hallenbeck, 21 Rank: Fire Police Officer Incident Date: July 8, 2015 Death Date: July 8, 2015 Fire Department: U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Initial Summary: Firefighter Hallenbeck, a member of Organized Crew 36 on the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, was struck and killed by a tree during the initial attack on the Sierra fire that broke out south of the Echo Summit mountain pass in California. A second firefighter was injured in the same incident but was treated and released from the hospital.

North Carolina: James D. “JD” Robinson, 59 Rank: Fire Chief Incident Date: August 14, 2015 Death Date: August 14, 2015 Fire Department: Brasstown Fire Department Initial Summary: While on standby at a local race track, Fire Chief Robinson told other members that he was going to take a break and rest. A short time later when members realized that he was not breathing, CPR was begun immediately and EMS was contacted. Fire Chief Robinson was treated at the scene and transported to Murphy Medical Center but succumbed to his injury; the nature and cause of which is still to be reported.

North Carolina: Christopher Joe Daniels, 40 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: August 17, 2015 Death Date: August 17, 2015 Fire Department: Pine Level Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Lieutenant Daniels arrived on shift at 0600hrs and per his normal routine ran for 30 minutes. He returned to the department's day room and was later found unresponsive at 0723hrs when members responded to a call.

The nature and cause of fatal injury is still to be determined.

Washington: Richard Wheeler, 31 Rank: Firefighter Washington: Andrew Zajac, 26 Rank: Firefighter

Washington: Tom Zbyszewski, 20 Rank: Firefighter

Incident Date: August 19, 2015 Death Date: August 19, 2015 Fire Department: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Initial Summary: Firefighter Wheeler, Firefighter Zajac, and Firefighter Zbyszewski were killed and one additional firefighter was injured when the Twisp wildfire trapped them in their apparatus on state forest land. The firefighters, members of an engine crew from the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, were involved in initial attack operations on the fire near Woods Canyon and Twisp River Roads in Washington State when their vehicle crashed and fire overtook it after winds suddenly shifted. The injured firefighter remains in the hospital in critical condition. Several other firefighters with dozer crews were also reported to have been injured. Investigation into the fatal incident continues.

FCTRT completes Tennessee’s first trench rescue training prop

Afternoon fire displaces three Chattanooga firefighters rushed to a house fire shortly after 1:00 on August 28th, at 4214 3rd Avenue. Lt. Chris Blazek with Quint 6 said smoke was showing from the eves of the house when the first firefighters arrived on the scene.

The firefighters forced their way in through the back door and found the fire in the basement, but the flames had spread up into two bedrooms. The firefighters got the blaze under control in roughly 15 minutes.

The fire damage was contained to the basement and two bedrooms. The rest of the house had smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. An estimate on the dollar loss was not available.

The owner of the property told firefighters that the house was being rented to a mother and her

Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee were called to the scene to provide assistance to the fire victims.

Chattanooga police and Hamilton County EMS also provided assistance on the scene.

Chattanooga fire investigators have already determined the cause of this afternoon’s house fire at 4214 3rd Avenue. Lt. Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said the cause of the fire was accidental, most likely from an electrical malfunction. Lt. McElvain estimated the dollar loss at $26,000.

With a grant from the Assisi Foundation of Memphis, the Fayette County Technical Rescue Team has completed the installation of the first trench rescue training prop in Tennessee. The rescue prop is configured and designed to simulate conditions JUMP TO FILE# that may exist when 083115101 a trench rescue is needed and allows the team to train in the various different types of trench rescue situations that they may encounter in a safe and controlled environment.

Trench rescue, although not a typical response for many fire departments, is extremely hazardous for responding personnel. Trench collapses occur frequently during new construction when the ground opens up from an excavation and the ground has a high risk of caving in. These collapses result in one of the highest causes of death in construction accidents throughout the United States. Rescue teams must have extensive training and special-

ized equipment to effectively handle these types of incidents and the individuals that may become trapped in a trench collapse.

“Trench rescue or trench rescue assistance is one of the specialized responses that our all volunteer rescue squad is able to provide emergency response agencies in the mid-south area,” stated Major Matt Wilson.

“Having Tennessee’s first trench rescue training prop allows our members to continue their extensive training in this very important mod-

ule in a safe and controlled environment. More importantly, we will be making this prop available for other local emergency response agencies to use in any of their training as well,” said Wilson.

The trench rescue prop will be used when the team hosts the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squad’s Basic Trench Rescue Class in September at its team headquarters located at 3565 Highway 57 in Rossville.

No injuries in afternoon house fire JOHNSON CITY FIREFIGHTERS L-1791

Vehicle versus railroad crossing signal Johnson City Fire Engine 4 was dispatched for a single vehicle MVA, van versus railroad crossing signal on September 2nd. Engine 4 arrived on scene along with WC/JC EMS crews and JCPD officers. The driver of the van denied injury. Norfolk Southern, whom owns the adjacent rail line was made aware of the accident and rail traffic was unaffected.

Chattanooga firefighters responded to a house fire shortly before 4:00 p.m. on September 15th at 37 Agnes Avenue. Captain Danny Usher with Engine 15 said heavy smoke was showing from the rear of the one-story house.

Firefighters made their way inside the house and found a large fire in a bathroom. They were able to get the fire out in five to ten minutes, containing most of the fire damage to the one room. There was some smoke and water damage to adjacent rooms.

No one was reportedly home at the time and no injuries were re-

A Chattanooga fire investigator has determined the likely cause of the fire. Lt. Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said the residents were in the process of moving into the house and someone had placed boxes in front of a wall heater in the bathroom. Lt. McElvain believes it was cool enough for the wall heater to

cycle on, and after the boxes got hot enough, a fire broke out.

No one was in the home at the time, but a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the house and called 911.

Chattanooga firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the bathroom, but the rest of the house sustained some smoke and water damage. The dollar loss was estimated at $45,000. Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee were called in to provide assistance to the victims.

JOHNSON CITY FIREFIGHTERS L-1791

Interstate 26 Crash On October 9, 2015, Johnson City Engine 2, Engine 3, and 820 (shift captain) were dispatched to Interstate 26 westbound, milemarker 24 for a single vehicle MVA. The vehicle had left the roadway and struck the concrete barrier. The single occupant denied injury. WC/JC EMS, JCPD, and TDOT crews also responded. Imterstate 26 was down to one lane in both directions during the incident.

MFRD responds to house fire Murfreesboro, TN. Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department’s Ladders 6 and 7 and Rescues 7 and 8 responded to 3422 Esquire Drive for reports of flames spotted at the back of the residence around 2:45 p.m. on September 9th.

Police/Fire Dispatch alerted crews enroute that the caller advised there was some type of explosion before the flames and smoke were visible.

When crews arrived on scene, all residents were out of the home.

Assistant Fire Marshal Carl Peas responded to the scene and conducted a routine investigation. According to Peas, the fire appears accidental. “The homeowner was burning wood in a fire pit and the fire somehow ignited rubber mulch near the residence. Once the mulch ignited, the fire spread to the deck and

vinyl siding of the home,” said Peas.

“The explosion heard by the homeowner was possibly the compressor on one of the air conditioning units,” Peas continued.

“When the homeowner heard the noise, he came out and began dousing the fire with his garden hose.”

No injuries were associated with this incident. The residents will not be displaced.

JCFD responds to Mullican Flooring fire On August 31, 2015, A-shift crews were dispatched to Mullican Flooring, 655 Woodlyn Road for a business fire. The caller advised smoke visible from the roof. Command was established for a confirmed working fire. Additional crews arrived and the aerial ladder of Truck 3 was placed into service.

Crews worked to gain access to the roof and extinguished the fire. A storage silo in close proximity was also surveyed for fire extension with nothing found. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Johnson City Engines 1, 3, 4, 5 and Trucks 1 and 3 responded.

Firefighters quickly contain Knoxville fire

Shortly after 7 a.m. on September 12th, firefighters were dispatched to 2819 Chillicothe St. off Western Ave., for report of a fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the tenant of the home safely outside and willing to direct firefighters to where he had seen flames. Flames were coming from the rear and around an electrical panel box at the rear of the home. The homeowner reported to officials that he woke to the smell of smoke and called 911. Flames had climbed the wall above the electrical box and into the second floor of the structure. Firefighters were able to contain most of the damage to the area of origin, with very little extension. No injuries were reported and no assistance required from other agencies.

MFRD welcomes new fire chief and six firefighters

Murfreesboro, TN. Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department welcomed new Fire Chief Mark Foulks on August 25th along with six new firefighters.

Firefighters Jason Dwyer, Cory Friend, Logan Gill, Wayne Sutter, Matt JUMP TO FILE # Tidwell, and Betsy 082715107 Welcome have a combined 39 years’ experience in the fire service. Dwyer and Friend are certified paramedics; Gill, Sutter, Tidwell, and Welcome are Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians.

The six will complete orientation and will begin their shift work. All will be stationed at headquarters on Vine Street, although they will be assigned to various shifts.

Monday also marked the first

day that MFRD administrative employees met their new chief.

Chief Foulks introduced himself to the new hires and seasoned employees. He then shared his philosophy, “I believe as long as you serve the people in your community by treating them the same as you would your own family, everything else will fall into place.”

Foulks’ previous employment included 17 years with Knoxville Fire Department and he was just one month shy of a nine year career at Greenville Fire Department before he accepted the position with MFRD. “It is an honor and privilege to come on board with the men and women of MFRD. I look forward to us working together to achieve numerous accomplishments,” said Chief Foulks.

JCFD takes part in NFFF Memorial Stair Climb

On September 5, 2015, Johnson City firefighters took part in the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Knoxville Memorial Stair Climb. Their team was made up of Johnson City Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 1791 members and members of the Jonesborough Fire Department. Crews climbed 110 stories in memory of those lost on September 11, 2001. The event was held at the Sunsphere at the World's Fair site. Johnson City firefighters also plan to participate in the Tri-Cities 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on September 10th.

Heavy flames breach roof in Knoxville Shortly after 7:00 p.m. on August 17th, units from the Knoxville Fire Department responded to 1837 Riverside Dr. for report of flames coming through the roof.

When firefighters arrived, they confirmed heavy flames breaching the roof, and thick smoke coming from the third floor.

Crews quickly attacked the

JUMP TO FILE #082415154 fire while a coordinated search by additional manpower was conducted, finding all residents had safely self-evacuated the three story, twelve unit building.

Firefighters concentrated their efforts on the upper floor, where the heaviest fire damage was oc-

curring. While on the third floor, two firefighters escaped with minor injuries, after calling for a MAYDAY when a roof and ceiling fell on them.

Twenty-four residents will be placed in shelters, until a more permanent solution prevails.

Arson Investigators are on the scene to determine the cause.

It was a very close call for some Chattanooga families when fire raced through their apartment building on August 13th. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 10:33 p.m. and responded to Hidden Creek Apartments at 7710 E. Brainerd Road with six fire companies.

The apartment complex is just around the corner from Station 21 on East Brainerd Road. When firefighters from that station arrived, they observed a significant amount of fire coming from the third floor of the apartment building. Seeing the magnitude of the fire, a second alarm was requested to bring in six additional fire companies.

All of the occupants were in the process of evacuating the building when the firefighters arrived. Eyewitnesses saw a woman leap from a third story window with a child in her arms. Both were injured and transported by Hamilton County EMS to a local hospital. Fire investigators are still trying to confirm those eyewitness reports.

The firefighters initially tried to attack the fire from the inside of the apartment building, and on the roof, but the fire continued to spread through the attic and flames eventually broke through the roof. At that point, Battalion Chief Fredrick Blake ordered the firefighters out of the building for their own safety.

It took roughly 50 firefighters more than an hour to get the blaze under control. An estimate on the dollar loss was not available, but the damage was extensive and a number of apartment units were totally destroyed.

Management told firefighters that everyone who lived in the 24 units in the building were accounted for.

The American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee responded to the scene with a team of staff and volunteers to provide assistance to the victims displaced by the

JUMP TO FILE #081415103 fire. Jamie Lewis, disaster program manager with the Red Cross, said a shelter was being set up at the E. Brainerd Church of Christ, located across the street from the apartment complex.

Lewis said most of the families are expected to stay with family or friends, but he said three or four families may use the shelter for a day or two.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Chattanooga police, Hamilton County EMS, EPB and Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue also provided valuable assistance on the scene.

New information obtained overnight by fire investigators reveals that an off-duty Chattanooga firefighter captured the baby after it was dropped by the mother. Captain Anthony Moore with the Fire Investigation Division identified the firefighter as Vernon Lane, a Lieutenant with Ladder 1 at Station 1. Lt. Lane also lived in that apartment building and when fire broke out, he got out and spotted the mother and her ten-month-old baby boy on a third floor balcony.

Lt. Lane said the woman dropped the baby toward him, and he managed to catch it, dropping to the ground to help break the fall.

But before Lt. Lane could get back up, the woman landed on top of both of them. The woman and baby were transported by Hamilton County EMS to a local hospital. Captain Moore said the condition of the mother and child was still being assessed by medical personnel, but none of their injuries were thought to be lifethreatening.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Lt. Henry McElvain is assisting with the investigation.

Woman is rescued at Pocket Wilderness On Wednesday afternoon, September 2nd, a woman was injured on her ATV at the Pocket Wilderness Trails in Soddy Daisy, TN. Several emergency services agencies responded to assist Mowbray Volunteer Fire Department with the rescue of a female, who could not walk out of the mountainous trails.

Fire officials reported a female from TN State Parks was conducting her daily patrols on the trails when the rocky terrain caused her ATV to flip on top of her. Her fellow co-worker was with her and was able to call 911 to direct first responders to their exact location. The patient's extrication took two hours and she was handed off to Hamilton County EMS personnel to transport her to Erlanger Medical Center for a knee injury.

Smyrna Airport, FAA aircraft drill Recently, the Smyrna Airport Department of Public Safety held its annual FAA FAR-139 Disaster Response full scale drill. The response was to a Military Blackhawk that had crashed into the woods off the airport. The pilot was talking to the air traffic control tower when he declared an emergency and then crashed. This annual full scale drill involved all of our local response agencies that support the Smyrna Airport. It was also a part of the Military’s Accident Investigation School.

Barrow County Emergency Services recently promoted TJ Gower to the position of Lieutenant.

“TJ started working for us almost straight out of high school and has been a dedicated JUMP TO FILE # hard working em- 091615126 ployee since he began,” stated Chief John Skinner.

“It has been an honor to watch him from the beginning of his career, see him work hard, attend training classes and now be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.”

Lt Gower is a Winder Barrow graduate in 2005 and in 2006 he started working for Barrow County when they conducted a recruit class.

In August of 2006, he graduated from the recruit class and was placed on shift as a firefighter. He

continued his education since then and has obtained many certificates including becoming a Nationally Certified Firefighter in April 2007.

He also completed his EMT training and has attended numerous fire classes. Some of the fire classes include Fire Officer 1, Incident Command For Structural Collapse, and Decision Making for Initial Company Operations.

He is also trained to the level of hazardous material operations, as well as apparatus operator.

“Lieutenant Gower has been assigned to Station 5 A-Shift and is serving as company officer there,” commented Chief Skinner.

“He has worked hard to earn this position and it has been good to see him work his way up the ranks for this. I know he will do well in this new role.”

Technical Rope Rescue training program On August 27, 2015, St. Marys Fire Department staff participated in a Technical Rope Rescue training program sponsored by Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base Fire Department.

Firefighters had the opportunity to ascend and descend a rope after learning the basics of securing into a harness, while making use of a prusik knot for ascending and a brake bar rack for descending. This class was the third in a series of five classes which are cumulative, and involve various ways ropes and knots and the multitude of 'appliances' are used in rescue situations.

Early morning structure fire damages home in Polk County Polk County Fire Stations 2, 6, 3, 4, Truck 1501 and Rockmart Fire Department on automatic aid were dispatched to Mann Road for a reported structure fire on August 18th.

The caller stated no one was at home. Due to no response from primary stations, command requested Stations 9 and 7 for manpower and water supply.

Upon arrival of Rockmart Fire Department, crews found heavy

JUMP TO FILE #082415162 smoke and visible flames from the C-D corner of the single story wood frame structure with Rockmart fire unit 20 assuming command.

Rockmart fire personnel initiated an interior attack knocking the fire down, and containing to one room.

Polk County Stations set up water supply to Rockmart Engine 3, and performed extensive salvage and overhaul.

The structure had severe smoke and heat damage throughout.

The cause of fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

The owner was on vacation at the time of the fire.

County receives reimbursement for storm costs Barrow County received a reimbursement check from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) to help cover some of the expenses that occurred during the winter storm that hit Barrow County February 16-17 this year.

The check was presented by GEMA representative Charlie Dawson to Barrow County Emergency Service Chief John Skinner. “Barrow County was included in the Federal Declaration for Public Assistance” stated Chief Skinner.

“This allowed us to apply for and receive reimbursement for eligible expenses the county accrued in their response to and cleanup following the winter storm.”

JUMP TO FILE #090315104 The county received a check for $119,325.22 to help with the cost of response and recovery. Reimbursable expenses included personnel, fuel, equipment, rental, and administrative costs. These expenses were combined cost from numerous county departments including emergency services (fire, EMS and EMA), Sheriff’s Department and Public Works.

The reimbursement does not cover the entire cost of the local response to the event; however, it does alleviate some of the burden from the local taxpayers.

Reimbursement rates are typically 75% Federal, 10% State and 15% local. However, Barrow County Emergency Management has completed all of the requirements to receive additional reimbursement which increases the State reimbursement to 12 ½ % and lowers the local amount to 12 ½%.

“Response to disasters such as this winter storm is a coordinated effort between numerous departments,” said Chief Skinner.

“It takes everyone working together through planning, preparedness and response to keep our community safe.”

Lightning strike causes house fire

As a thunderstorm rolled through the area on September 9th, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a structure fire in the 1400 block of Millstone Ct. “The caller stated the home had been hit by lightning and there was flames showing from the home,” stated Lieutenant Scott Dakin. Firefighters were dispatched to the home and found fire showing from the roof in the center of the home. Crews made an aggressive interior attack to bring the fire quickly under control. The home suffered extensive fire and smoke damage. Two adults and a child were displaced as a result of this fire.

“Prevention” Sounds Great to Me – Let’s Do it!!!!!

Each year, October rolls around and we are surrounded with information, events and activities in the area of Fire Prevention.

The efforts I observe from local fire departments are remarkable. Countless hours volunteered to bring the information to schools, businesses and communities.

It’s organized, it’s well thought out and it works. It saves property. It saves lives. Excellent!

As remarkable as it is, It prompts me to wonder what is it that has all these wonderful people dedicating so much of their lives to saving others yet keeps them from recognizing the value of prevention in their own lives.

In my line of work, I often obtain new clients soon after they have experienced a health issue.

Sometimes it is high blood pressure…sometimes elevated cholesterol and/or triglycerides.

Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer often send folks in my direction.

Age doesn’t seem to discriminate. They are young and old alike. Many are firefighters.

Many are the same firefighters that I have watched devote countless hours to the community in all areas, including fire prevention.

Rest assured, I love them all and shall always willingly do all I can to guide them on a proper journey to Health and Wellness.

When they arrive to me, there are no lectures of “why didn’t you come to me sooner?” There are no “I told you So’s”.

I will always stand at the ready. Always – and be grateful they came, regardless of when or why.

BUT….. (I imagine you knew there was a BUT!)…

I naturally urge you (and all of them) now (while healthy) to dutifully consider Personal Health and Wellness. See your physician.

Take the first steps toward improving your nutritional habits.

Get going on that exercise program.

Surely once cleared by your physician you can get moving on that, even on the most basic level.

Quite simply: Begin and Continue.

I am not sure what is keeping people away. I know we are all well versed in the perils of Heart Disease and its title as the #1 cause of “Line of Duty” deaths.

I know the fact that Cancer is the fastest growing killer amongst firefighters has been duly noted.

I have yet to run across anyone who doesn’t know that exercise can reduce the risk factors of both Heart Disease and Cancer.

It’s a well known fact that exercise has long been touted for decreasing Obesity, High Blood Pressure and Stress.

Heck it can even enhance more restful sleep. Surely sleep has gotta be up there on the list of ‘must haves'.

Do we need to run through the entire list?

It is frustrating to me, yet a fact nonetheless, that I cannot make the decision for others.

They have to be ready and they have to be committed.

Ready and committed are two qualities ever present amongst firefighters – so I remain hopeful things will change.

I have often told firefighters it’s quite possible that I am addressing the wrong audience. I just may have greater success addressing their loved ones, because we are the ones who will be left behind to miss ‘em like crazy.

“We can’t imagine our lives without you and we don’t ever want to lose you”.

I say “we” because this is something that is all too familiar to me. Lost my Dad 26 years ago (“Line of Duty” Heart Attack”).

Since that time I have lost many many friends, young and old (far too soon) to a disease that has been proven to be preventable in many cases. We all know there are no guarantees.

We also know that prevention is about decreasing the risks.

Let’s go for that and keep more of you around for many years to come. prevention – sure sounds g reat to me!

I urge you all to see your physician and get on the Road to Prevention ASAP. Stay Safe…See ya Next Month - and the month after that…and the month after that…etc...Yes????

PS...Fitness programs are popping up in more and more fire houses throughout the country.

I am thrilled that everyday more and more of you are exercising.

To those of you who are already on the right track, I commend you.

Quite possibly you have a buddy or two, who has yet to take that first step.

Why not make October "Take your Buddy to the Gym Month"?

Of course they have to see the Dr. first, but I'm confident you'll get the job done.

Department promotes Savage to lieutenant After completing a promotional testing program, Barrow County Emergency Services has promoted Chuck Savage to the rank of Lieutenant.

“Lt Savage has had a long career in the public safety field and has gained knowledge and experience that will truly help in the role of Lieutenant,” stated Chief John Skinner.

“He will be an asset to the department in this role.”

Lt Savage started his career in 1993 when he became an EMT. He continued working and gaining

JUMP TO FILE #090815111 knowledge and became a paramedic as well. In March 2002, Lt Savage started working for Barrow County Emergency Services and worked his way up the ranks, including serving as the Emergency Medical Services Coordinator.

He took a few years off from Barrow County, but continued working full time in the emergency medical services field. He started back with Barrow in January 2014.

In 2002, Lt Savage completed a 132 hour basic firefighter course and has since obtained classes in areas such as Fire Officer and Fire Department Supervision. He also is an instructor for Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and CPR. “Lieutenant Savage has been assigned to Station 3 B-Shift and is serving as the station officer now,” commented Chief Skinner.

“I know his experience and dedication will serve him and the department well in this role.”

Fallen firefighter receives honors

The Henry County Fire Department honors the passing of one of their own. On Saturday, August 22, 2015, family and friends of Firefighter/Paramedic Brian Waits gathered to bid him farewell. Brian was a member of the Henry County Fire Department for 12 years. At the age of 45, he was diagnosed with cancer. On Wednesday, August 19, 2015, fellow Henry County firefighters and paramedics responded to a call for help for one of their own. Brian passed away after nearly a year long battle with cancer. He was a beloved friend, loyal husband, and loving father. He enjoyed helping others and above all spending time with his family.

Canton man dies in motorcycle accident Cherokee County, GA. A 46 year old Canton man lost his life on August 27th when he lost control of his motorcycle near York Drive on Ball Ground Highway in the Keithsburg community.

The motorcyclist was traveling northbound at approximately 11:30 when the accident occurred A passerby found the 46 year old victim lying in the road. He immediately called 911 and emergency service personnel with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene, where they pronounced him dead upon arrival. Reports indicated that he may have been traveling at a high rate of speed. Both lanes of Ball Ground Highway were blocked until the wreckage was cleared. The highway was reopened at around 1:30 a.m. The cause of the accident continues to be investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.

Glynn County works with Coast Guard

Fire damages home At 9:52 on September 3rd, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a fire in the 700 block of Jefferson Highway.

“Firefighters responded to this incident and found heavy smoke and fire conditions upon arrival,” stated Lieutenant Dakin.

“Crews make an aggressive interior attack on the fire to bring it under control.”

Engine 6, Engine 1, Engine 7, Ladder Truck 7, Med 6, Med 1, and Battalion 1 responded to this fire.

Firefighters found heavy smoke

JUMP TO FILE #090415106 coming from the front of the structure and heavy fire in the rear of the home. Crews found fire in several rooms and the attic. They brought the fire under control quickly; however, the home suffered heavy damage.

The Fire Investigation Team conducted an origin and cause investigation. The cause was determined to be a faulty heater.

Veteran receives 35 year pin

Captain Chuck Lett whom has served Rockdale County Fire and Rescue as well as the entire community of Rockdale County Georgia for 35 years. Captain Lett received his 35 year pin and award citation.

Glynn County, GA. The Glynn County Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has entered into a new partnership with the US Coast Guard Station Brunswick to provide marine EMS services when needed.

JUMP TO FILE# This new part- 072415133 nership will allow for paramedics and Emergency Medto accompany the US Coast Guard on missions where there is a medical emergency, allowing aide to reach patients much quicker.

Previously, the Coast Guard would call 911 on their way in to land and have an ambulance ready and waiting at the nearest docking facility. With this new partnership, Glynn County paramedics and EMTs will join the Coast Guard and be able to provide lifesaving medical attention on the water without wasting precious time.

There are many times that we do not keep quiet when we should, but there are times that are worse. It is the time that we should open our mouths, but do not.

It may be because we are ashamed, or do not know who to talk to, or think that we should be able to handle the situation. Well, there are times to be vocal and this is the time to start the discussion.

We would do a disservice if we never continue the conversation.

Firefighters hurt in so many ways, but all too often, we’ve become used to being hurt and do not want to admit that we have a problem. This subject will be brought up more often. The topic for the month is SUICIDE, in particular firefighter and EMS suicide.

I have been going to classes about suicide and there is so much information, that people ignore. The public may talk about police suicides. This sticks out because the officers have the method of suicide strapped to them, almost all day and night.

I reminded the instructor that

they forgot about the entire population of firefighters and EMS. They told me that they did not hear about a firefighter going home with an axe and dieing via suicide. We know so many ways and are exposed to many more ways and methods.

So far, about 675 cases of suicide have been tracked. Out of that number, five deaths were by immoliation, that is setting yourself on fire. The major method was via firearms.

There is something wrong going on here. We need to be sensitive to our brothers. We need to know each others’ base line behavior, so that we can tell when they are off their game.

Remember that you are allowed to have tailboard chats to express your concerns about a brother one on one with nobody around.

One of my friends had a good friend who died via suicide and it was painful.

“Why did I not see it coming?”

We start asking a lot of questions after it happens, but how about a lot of questions to possibly help the person? Do you even know what to look for?

According to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, these are the Suicide Warning Signs “People who kill themselves exhibit one or more warning signs, either through what they say or

what they do. The more warning signs, the greater the risk. Talk if a person talks about: • Killing themselves • Having no reason to live • Being a burden to others • Feeling trapped • Unbearable pain • Behavior A person’s suicide risk is greater if a behavior is new or has increased, especially if it’s related to a painful event, loss, or change.

• Increased use of alcohol or drugs • Looking for a way to kill themselves, such as searching online for materials or means • Acting recklessly • Withdrawing from activities • Isolating from family and friends • Sleeping too much or too little • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye • Giving away prized possessions • Aggression Mood People who are considering suicide often display one or more of the following moods.

• Depression • Loss of interest • Rage • Irritability • Humiliation • Anxiety My thoughts are that so many

times a death by suicide is swept under the rug and reported a different way. This may be done so that the family receives all the life insurance and death benefits. But people, look at the reasons.

How many people know that the divorce rate for firefighters is 85% versus 77% for police?

We walk around with so much stress and just keep burying it inside. We still hold onto the “macho” personality that we can handle anything.

Do we reach out for our help or the help of a brother? Why not?

If we use a CISM team for incidents, and might discuss the incident, why do we hold back? If we keep bottling up our stress, it will come out. This is not too be debated. It can be our health.

I have talked with some people, who have attempted death via suicide and found that hope seemed to be missing in their lives. There are many places to find hope.

It is interesting that the number one way of death by suicide for law enforcement is also the number one way of death by suicide for fire and EMS. The most reported deaths by suicide is of active firefighters versus retired, fired, resigned or disabled. The high number of deaths by suicide by age are close from 18 to 50.

So far this year, there have been 68 completed suicides. Last year was the largest amount since the tracking began and that was 104 deaths. What happened last year?

I personally ask that if you are thinking of hurting yourself or if you know of someone thinking about hurting themselves, please call either Serve and Protect at 615373-8000 or the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255).

Even though times may seem extremely dark, there is hope that can be found and people that are will to assist you.

Psalm 23 states “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

I want you to think about the word “through”. We go through the hard times. We do not continue to live there.

Granted it may take some time and may be painful, but please remember that God is there with you.

You may feel alone, but it is alright to call out to Him for help.

I ask that you do not give up, there is hope.

North Port mourning loss of dedicated firefighter Firefighter Christine Doyle passed away after a year and half battle with leukemia. She was surrounded by family and members of North Port Station 84 at the Advanced Cancer Treatment Center in Houston, Texas.

A l t h o u g h JUMP TO FILE# Christine was only 081215121 36 years old and with only nine years that she served on the department, her accomplishments were plentiful, starting with the fire department’s Honor Guard, and Firefighters Benevolent Fund to name a few accomplishments.

North Port Fire Chief Bill Taaffe says, “She always stepped up to help the city. We are all heartbroken by the loss. To me, Christina was more like a daughter than an employee. Her infectious smile and determination will be missed by all. Christina comes from a long line of those dedicated to the fire service, a 4th generation firefighter. Her GreatGrandfather, Grandfather and Father all served with the Boston Fire Department.

On the morning of August 12th, over 200 friends, family, and Emergency Service Personnel gathered to say good by to Firefighter Christine Doyle.

The Reedy Creek Fire Department protects all of Walt Disney property and started its operation in 1968. The fire department currently operates out of four fire stations and has approximately 160 full-time firefighters, officers and paramedics. They respond to over 29,000 alarms a year. Palm Harbor evacuates over 40 residents On August 3rd, severe rainfall flooded several areas in Pinellas County affecting the Caladesi Travel Trailer and Sherwood RV Parks in Palm Harbor located on Tampa Road and Alternate 19.

Immediate storm deployment sent Palm Harbor Fire Rescue crews and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to the area for resident, who became trapped in their

Crews utilized Brush Truck 68, small watercraft and PCSO Armored Rescue vehicles to navi-

gate through the waters and bring the residents to safety.

Over 40 residents were safely evacuated and sought shelter with family or friends and three individuals were assisted by Red Cross and transported to a local shelter.

Electrical fire in Sumter County At approximately 8:15 a.m. on August 13, Sumter County Fire & EMS responded to a reported residential structure fire at 203 Jackson St., Wildwood.

Initial reports indicated a “fully involved” structure, with a patient in the front yard. The first units arrived in less than five minutes, encountered one unit of a duplex with heavy smoke emitting from the front door, heavy fire and smoke from the rear window, and an apparent victim in the front yard.

Crews simultaneously began assessment on the patient, while others began fire assessment and attack. The fire was quickly darkened

down, with extinguishment occurring within ten minutes, without extension into the second duplex unit.

The fire displaced two adults and three children, who lost most of their belongings to the fire, and Red Cross was requested to assist the family. One patient was transported to a local hospital for a non-fire medical emergency.

The cause of the fire was listed as electrical. Units from Rural Metro ambulance and Villages Public Safety Department assisted at this incident, and there were no public safety responder injuries.

Plantation paramedic recognized Plantation, FL. For years researchers have tried to understand the forces which bring unrelated things together to create an event.

One such event occurred on July 4th, when Plantation Paramedic Joseph Bornstein while on his way to Orlando, stopped at the Ft. Drum Service Plaza on the Turnpike.

While there, Joe observed an 85 year old male guest collapse in the men’s room. He quickly pulled the gentleman from the stall and assessed his condition. The subject was in full cardiac arrest. PM Bornstein began CPR while employees from the plaza retrieved an AED and contacted fire rescue.

Together, PM Bornstein and the

JUMP TO FILE #082415112 employees were able to resuscitate the guest. Bornstein maintained care over him until local fire rescue arrived. The patient was ultimately flown to a nearby trauma center and later transferred to a hospital in Miami for further care.

Joe and the Areas USA, Inc. employees were recognized at the Plantation City Council meeting on August 12. Bornstein received the Fire Department’s Meritorious Service Award while the two men received Civilian Citation awards.

LCDPS honors 9/11 victims

On September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans died in a terrorist attack on our nation and it’s a day we will forever remember. Levy County Department of Public Safety was represented by Firefighter/Paramedic Matthew Cribbs, Firefighter/EMT Chris Hinson, Firefighter Justin Pittman, and Firefighter Joshua Mosher in honoring the lives of those lost on September 11, 2001 by participating in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb hosted by Panama City Beach Fire Rescue on September 12, 2015. The Stair Climb consisted of 110 flights of stairs to duplicate the stories of the World Trade Center Towers that the emergency responders had to climb that tragic day.

Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation.

Rockledge chief set to retire Chief J.L. Sunday has served with Rockledge Fire and Emergency Services since 1981. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1988, and in 1998 was again promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief for shift A. ON October 28, 2015, Battalion Chief Jeptha Sunday will officially take the office of the fire chief upon the retirement of Rick Allen.

Two homes catch fire in Fort Lauderdale Three men and a dog were treated for smoke inhalation when an early morning fire broke in the 2500 block of Tortuga Lane.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Engine 47 arrived to find two houses heavily involved with fire and reports of people trapped. The officer immediately called for a second alarm calling for more units and started an aggressive interior attack on the well involved structure.

Crews quickly gained access to

While attacking the fire on the second floor, a partial collapse caused firefighters to retreat to the stairs where they continued knock down the fire.

Additional units protected exposures and put out the second house fire. It took firefighters about

30 minutes to place the fires under control.

Three men who were in the house were transported to the Broward Health for smoke inhalation. One man received a Cyanokit during transport. The dog Chico was treated on scene by paramedics and turned over to a neighbor.

The Fort Lauderdale Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Rush hour MCI in Bradenton

A three car accident sent over a half dozen people to the hospital and another half dozen to be checked at the scene on August 4th. One vehicle a minivan carry children rolled on to it’s side. First reports were of entrapment, but on arrival all were out of the vehicles. Bradenton Fire Department secured the cars and removed debris while Manatee EMS transported and took RMA'S.

Serious motor vehicle crash in Seminole A serious motor vehicle crash at Oakhurst and 86 Avenue Seminole occurred on August 4th.

City of Seminole and Pinellas Suncoast firefighters worked swiftly to extricate an 84 year old , who was trapped in his vehicle after a crash. The unidentified motorist was the sole occupant of the vehicle that was struck by a large pickup truck. The driver was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Pinellas County Sherriff Deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol were on the scene investigating the crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Risk, Possibility, and Probability STAYING SAFE

The following article was first published in 2006 and has been revised and updated as I discuss risk in the next few columns.

It was April, 2006 when a midwest fire department responded to a controlled burn that had gotten out of control and spread to adjacent brush.

During the operations at the fire, one of the apparatus became stuck in soft ground. In order to free the mired apparatus, a tractor was employed to do the pulling and a driver needed to steer the fire apparatus.

During the towing operation, according to reports, the clevis connection failed and the tow rope/cable whipped back through the windshield striking the firefighter steering the apparatus in the forehead. He was flown to the nearest trauma center, where he underwent brain surgery. The firefighter passed away as a result of his injuries a few days later.

Over the years, the word risk has become a common word in the field of firefighter safety. We risk a lot to save a lot, and we risk little to save little. Of course the risk that we are talking about is one’s life.

How much jeopardy (risk) shall we place upon our life in order to accomplish a specific task or function? When we speak of risk, isn’t there risk in our everyday lives as well?

The potential to fall in the shower, get hit by a car, be involved in a motor vehicle accident, having something fall on us, or just simply trip and fall injuring ourselves.

What about the folks in our great country who live in areas devastated by a multitude of other possibilities like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes?

Do we lock ourselves at home only to have the ceiling fall on us?

Do we pack our bags and move?

The answer to both questions, of course not!

We go about our daily routine with very little thought given to the aforementioned risks as life goes on. We base our rationale on possibility versus probability.

There are those who have the sky falling, as everything is possible, but the folks who crunch numbers based on past experience talk in probabilities.

Like what was the probability of that clevis failing?

It is the real world we operate in and therefore we must, when making a risk assessment, consider probability over possibility.

Doing so does not negate a review of all the risk factors that may be encountered on scene and consideration given to both possibility and probability.

The proper risk analysis requires one to eliminate any life hazard whenever and wherever possible, or to reduce the risk hazard by altering the plan of operations whenever the hazard cannot be eliminated, and in this case visually checking the tow rope/cable and related equipment.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines Probability as a number expressing the likelihood that a specific event will occur, expressed as the ratio of the number of actual occurrences to the number of possible occurrences.

It defines Possibility as the fact or state of being possible, something that is possible; and it defines Accident as an unexpected and undesirable event, especially one resulting in damage or harm: car accidents on icy roads.

Risk is defined as a factor, thing, element, or course involving uncertain danger.

Could one have planned for such an incident? The possibility of the tow rope or cable may have been a passing thought for most on scene personnel.

How old was the cable or rope?

Was it inspected prior to use? It would still have to penetrate the windshield, which was acting as a simple protective barrier, but whoever would think it would or could happen.

How about your operations at motor vehicle incidents? Do you clear the immediate area of all personnel whenever the tow truck hooks up to a disabled vehicle?

What is the reliability and dependability of the tow cable? Who certifies the operator of the tow vehicle?

Many questions to which I don’t have the answers, but all pose the potential of risk should the cable snap and how much thought do we give to that occurring?

Do we continue to second guess ourselves about every detail after making a decision, if we do, nothing will be accomplished?

There is only so much that we can prepare for without becoming paranoid.

If we believe that everything can and will go wrong, there will be little need for us to leave the fire station.

We do our best to be prepared and sometimes, despite all our efforts, things just don't go the way we had anticipated.

In this incident, I believe accident is the correct word, what occurred was just an accident; unfortunately it claimed the life of a firefighter.

Ocala Fire Rescue firefighters dash to victims during water training exercise Ocala, FL. On August 24, 2015, Ocala Fire Rescue Firefighters dashed through the swimming lanes at Jervey Gantt Aquatic Center to retrieve drowning “victims” during a water training exercise this morning.

Fourteen Ocala Fire Rescue firefighters took turns performing the roles of victims and rescuers in an aquatic training exercise focused on effective removal of patients in distress from a body of water. Immobilizing patients in resting water, patient packaging, rescues with varying victim pro-

JUMP TO FILE #082515106 files (i.e. aggressive swimmer, unconscious patient, victim with spinal injury), and firefighter behavior in case of accidental water entry while wearing full gear (with and without air pack) were demonstrated.

“With summer showers falling almost every evening, filling retention ponds to capacity, patient removal techniques from aquatic settings could be needed at any mo-

ment”, explained Captain Robert Osteen from Ocala Fire Rescue.

“This training is part of the preventative measures the department takes to ensure both the citizens and firefighters remain safe during rescues”.

Between Friday, August 21st and this morning’s exercise a total of twenty nine Ocala Fire Rescue Firefighters completed the water training session. Ten Marion County Fire Rescue firefighters also participated.

Vehicle fire with structural involvement Shortly after noon on September 5th, Edgewater Fire Rescue was dispatched to a vehicle fire with structural endangerment at 2528 Queen Palm Drive. The caller advised that a boat and car very close to the home were on fire. A second caller reported that the home was on fire as well.

Crews found a boat in the street and a car in the driveway on fire at a single family residence. The garage of the home was also on fire, with flames seen above the edge of a partially collapsed overhead

JUMP TO FILE #090815108 garage door. All fires were brought under control in five minutes.

While crews were battling the fire, it came to their attention that one of the occupants of the home suffered injuries while attempting to move the boat away from the house. The patient was treated for non-life threatening injuries and transported to Bert Fish Medical Center. A total of two adults and

two children were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is providing assistance. The origin of the fire was discovered to be the car in the driveway. The exact cause remains under investigation by the Edgewater Fire Marshal.

On scene apparatus included Edgewater Fire Rescue Engine 55, Engine 57, Rescue 55, Rescue 57, and Fire Marshal 55. New Smyrna Beach FD Engine 52 covered the city.

Door pop in Cedar Hammock

Cedar Hammock Fire and Rescue responded to a MVA Friday morning, August 7th at the intersection of Route 41 and 57th St. On arrival, one vehicle was into a pole and in the second vehicle the driver couldn't get out. Firefighters popped the front door driver door, removed the rear door, and took the post to remove the driver. The driver of the first car only had minor injuries and was not transported. The driver of the second vehicle was transported.

Rush hour tanker explosion in Jacksonville

The Jacksonville firefighters responded to a call of a tanker truck heavily involved in flames on Interstate 95 in the downtown area of Jacksonville near Emerson Street on Saturday, August 29th at 7 p.m. The tanker truck's cab was completely involved in fire upon the arrival of the first engine company. Water was inaccessible due to the expressway and construction so tankers were dispatched by command units early. The tanker truck was carrying bulk bio-diesel and the first tanks behind the cab were impinged upon. The Jacksonville firefighters made an aggressive attack and knocked down the tractor fire without injuries to the public or the firefighters. The driver was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, but was released later that day.

Southern Manatee with the quick stop Southern Manatee Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a structure fire at Suburban Propane on 15th street. Enroute it was confirmed that the structure was on the street behind Suburban Propane. When the first due company arrived at 1511 Suponic Ave, there was a medium smoke condition coming from side 'C'. As companies started to pull a line to the rear, the fire broke through the eves and roof area. Hydrants were a distance away so the engines nursed each other. The occupants of the residents escaped without injury.

FORT LAUDERDALE FIRE RESCUE (1818 / 1811)

Two alarm fire in Downtown Fort Lauderdale

Units from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a downtown high-rise for a two alarm fire on Thursday, August 13th. Thirty-five firefighters responded to the call. The fire started in a kitchen on the first floor and traveled the duct system to the upper floors of the parking garage where crews encountered thick smoke and flames overhead. After about one hour, everything was under control and the downtown returned to its busy day. There were no injuries and firefighters had to assist a few handicapped individuals out of the building.
