Fire prevention at the meadow club in Southampton On Thursday, July 31st, the Southampton Fire Department taught approximately 100 children fire prevention at the Meadow Club in Southampton Village. We brought our fire prevention trailer, a tanker and a pumper. The children were taught about our gear and some safety procedures. All involved had a great day.

On Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014 at 8:08 p.m., during the height of a severe thunderstorm passingthrough the North Shore of Long Island, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Company #4 was dispatched to a residence in Russell Gardens for wires reportedly burning in a tree. Engine 8740, Deputy Chief Candan (8704) and Chief of Department Farrone (8705) all responded and secured the scene after notifying PSE&G for an active burning primary wire. While taking up, the dispatcher notified Chief Farrone that he was receiving calls from FireCom for “a house struck by lightning with the roof on fire” on Manor Place in Zone 3. Chief Farrone, Deputy Chief Candan and Engine 8740 all responded, while M-LFD companies 1, 2, 3 and the ambulance unit were also dispatched to respond. Deputy Chief Candan arrived on the scene first and reported “smoke showing” and instructed Engine 8740 to hook up to the hydrant and stretch a hose line. Chief Farrone arrived on scene and transmitted a Signal 10 for a working fire in the attic of a two and a half story peaked roof private dwelling. The crew of Engine 8740 stretched their hose line to the second floor of the residence and knocked down the main body of fire in the attic within a few minutes. The crew from Engine 8735 assisted with getting the first hose line into operation, while the crew from Tower Ladder 8724 setup portable ladders, conducted searches and checked for any extension. A second one and three quarter inch hose line was stretched by the crew of Engine 8712, but was not charged. The Great Neck Alert Fire Company responded with Ladder 826 as the Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST).

Devaney. “Diesel exhaust has been proven to cause cancer and reduces the life of turnout gear according to published reports”, he concluded. This was the first application prepared by JSK for Gordon Hts., and their third award while using JSK beginning in 2013. Total JSK prepared 2013 AFGP funding for Nassau and Suffolk County currently stands at about $2.3 million in actual announced awards. - GRANT GUYS

COMMUNITY AMBULANCE CO

Time is muscle This Summer, Community Ambulance Company has been working with the Cherry Grove Community Association to provide Advanced Life Support EMS service to the Cherry Grove community. An Advanced Life Support EMS provider is stationed in Cherry Grove around the clock. This ensures that a medically trained first responder arrives on the scene of a 911 medical emergency within minutes. On July 16, 2014, our ALS first responder was dispatched to a male experiencing chest pains at the local doctor’s office. EMS was immediately requested due to the severity of the patient’s condition. Jennifer Hartmann, a Critical Care EMT, arrived on the scene within two minutes. Jennifer acquired a 12 Lead EKG and, along with the physician, confirmed that the patient was actively having a heart attack. Jennifer started intravenous access and administered emergency medication to help stabilize the patient’s vital signs.

CHRISTINA KELLY

JUMP TO FILE #072114101

The patient was packaged and transported by the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau. Jennifer cared for the patient for the trip across the Great South Bay and alerted the emergency room of the patient’s condition. The patient arrived in the emergency room twenty five minutes later, received two cardiac stents, and has since made a full recovery. “Time is muscle” said Jennifer Hartmann, who also serves as a Captain at Community Ambulance Company. “That’s our motto when handling these types of emergencies. The faster we treat and transport these patients to the emergency room the better their outcome.” Kenneth Osman of the Cherry Grove Community Association added “this program clearly works and has helped save a life.”

Community Ambulance Company 5K Race On June 29, 2014, Community Ambulance Company, Inc. held its third annual 5k Run and Walk in the town of Sayville, NY. The Community Ambulance Company 5k Run and Walk was a part of one of the premier running series on Long Island, The Sayville Summer Series. The run was held at the Islip Grange Park in Sayville, NY, and had an im-

time of 15 minutes 47.3 seconds. Third place went to Gregory Hayward (Farmingville, NY) with a time of 16 minutes 37.7 seconds. Community Ambulance would like to thank all the participants and congratulate them on a great race! - CHRISTINA KELLY

Micro-Grants hit home on Long Island JSK Inc., (the Grant-Guys) is pleased to announce that four of its clients have received funding under FEMA’s new “Micro-Grant” program. Tom Devaney Director of Operations at JSK announced that the Melville, Dix Hills, New Hyde Park, and new customer Jamesport FD’s have all received funding totaling $100,000 under the new FEMA initiative. The Micro-Grant awards smaller awards under the AFGP program in exchange for faster decisions. “Many departments are frustrated about the long wait to receive final AFGP determinations” said Devaney. “Many commissioners are reluctant to purchase equipment as they wait for application decisions”. Purchases made prior to an

JUMP TO FILE #072514110

award might be ineligible for funding according to FEMA guidelines. This program creates a means for departments to purchase items faster and give up their ability to apply for larger grants. There is no scoring advantage to opting into the program. Recent awards provide funding for approximately four SCBA’s or about ten sets of turn-out gear. The awards are capped at $25,000. Variations in funding are based on the subtraction of the match based on population and the addition of grant writer fees. Grant writer fees are reimbursed by FEMA in the event of successful awards. - GRANT GUYS

County Executive Mangano began by thanking each firefighter for the hard work and dedication they put in to protecting Nassau County’s residents and property. “It is times, such as Superstorm Sandy, where your courage shines but it is everyday heroism that personifies our Nassau County

firefighters,” said County Executive Mangano. “We gather today to honor our brave first responders who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and consistently risk their own lives to protect our Nassau County residents. Heroism, courage and sacrifice are just three words to describe their dedication. Each and every day, firefighters wake up and respond to emergencies with a single goal: protecting the public, rarely with concern for their own safety.” - KATIE GRILLI-RoBLES

Medford receives regional AFGP Award Medford, NY. The Medford Fire District has been awarded a $476,000 regional AFGP Award for the purchase of SCBA’s. The award will be shared with the Gordon Heights Fire District, who are partners on the application. The application was prepared by Williston Park based JSK INC (The Grant-Guys). “This is our largest AFGP award to date in the 2013 award cycle”, said company owner Kevin Mulrooney. “There is no question that FEMA supports our Suffolk based regional applications, this our second regional award, with one more anticipated in the near future” he said.

“SCBA’s continue to be a top priority of the AFGP program” said JSK Director of Operations Tom Devaney. SCBA’s fall under the Operations category of the AFGP program. Funding for SCBA’s include two bottles, one face-piece, and the unit itself. This purchase will bring agencies into 100% NFPA compliance with the new September 2013 standard. In 2011, JSK wrote a $1 million successful regional application for Smithtown, Halesite, Centerport, Dix Hills, and Melville FD’s.

JSK’s three regional awards will cover nine volunteer departments in Suffolk County and provide over $2,000,000 in just over a 30 month period. Grant writer fees are reimbursed by FEMA in the event of successful awards. In the instance of regional awards, the host agency is entitled to retain the grant writer fee. Additional allowable costs were included in the application including accounting fees, NFPA FF1 training, and physicals. Total JSK prepared 2013 AFGP funding for Nassau and Suffolk County currently stands at about $2.3 million in actual announced awards. - GRANT GUYS
