All hands in Woodhaven Queens FDNY responded to 89-21 78th Street in Woodhaven, Queens around 11:35 p.m. on March 23rd, Crews transmitted an all hands, going to work on arrival. Engine 293 was first due to this job, but Engine 236 was only a couple blocks away and heading back from an EMS run. Fire was blowing out the second floor exposure. They flanked out their uncharged secondary at-

tack line expecting the worse, but as soon as they received water it was knocked down fast leaving most of the building intact. Firefighters were surprised, joking that it was a record time to knock down a fire that quick. Ladders 142 and 143 went into roof

operations, while pockets of fire still simmered here and there. They placed the incident under control around 45 minutes later, but got another run back for a "rekindle" only 10 minutes after that. It turned out to be smoldering debris in a drawer and was extinguished by overhaul crews. - RICHARD YORK

One building, 24 hours, two multiple alarms Two multiple alarm fires struck the same building in Lower Manhattan in less than a twenty four hour period. This prompted the transmission of a 10-41, suspicious fire for the five story commercial building at 140 Fulton St. The first fire occurred at 7:00 a.m. on March 17th. The fire covered several floors of the structure and required a fourth alarm response (third

and fourth alarms were for relief purposes). Companies were called back again at 2:13 a.m. on March 18th and again found fire on several floors of the structure mainly in the rear. Operations soon went defensive

due to the fire damage from the first fire. Three alarms were transmitted this time. Two tower ladders operated from the front of the building and six handlines operated from the exposure buildings. No serious injuries were reported at either job. - BILL TOMPKINS

West Hamilton Beach’s last hurricane ravaged vehicle West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department’s Chief vehicle was hit by six feet of flooding sea water during Hurricane Sandy. They also lost two fire trucks, two ambulances and a brush truck. All of the vehicles were towed away and replaced primarily by generous donations. This is the only vehicle still in the parking lot and that has yet to be replaced. They are planning a drill to use the vehicle for extrication training.

Canarsie, Brooklyn the southeastern part of the borough and is home to 96,000 residents-give or take a few. If you ever talk to native Brooklyn folks, a lot will say “yea I’m from Canarsie, originally.” It’s funny because it seems to me that everyone from Brooklyn grew up there. Al Roker, Peter Criss, Curtis Sliwa and the list goes on and on. Canarsie is one of the largest neighborhoods in Brooklyn per area and was actually built on swamps that were part of Jamaica Bay. For a good portion of the 1800’s, it was a fishing village until the decline in fish due to pollution and overharvesting. Jamaica Bay, also called the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is an estuary that is part of the Rockaway Inlet and is shielded by the Rockaways, which actually act as a buffer zone or barrier from the direct ocean current. Is it also part of the Gateway National Recreational Area that has been protected since 1972 and fall under the auspices of the National Park Service. This has become one of the top wildlife viewing places in the metropolitan area for birds and waterfowl. The bay itself has an average depth of thirteen feet and a tidal range of around five feet. Some excellent kayaking can be done here, which I have done over the years, as long as it is at high tide. It is also home to Canarsie’s bravest, 257 Engine, 170 Truck and the 58th Battalion at 1361 Rockaway Parkway, another one of those rare three bay firehouses that are hard to find in this city. The firehouse was built in 1908 for a modest cost of around $50,000, with the most notable feature being the hose tower on the left side of the two-story structure. It is not visible on others from the exterior from the same time period. Due to its size and location, it was used to store apparatus over the years and was home to several other companies. At the foot of Rockaway Parkway and just off the Belt Parkway is the Canarsie Pier, which operated a ferry service that shuttled passengers back and forth to Rockaway. The ferry stopped running by 1939, after the construction of the Marine Parkway Bridge, which opened in 1937. Today, the pier is a popular fishing and recreation spot for

LARRY WOODCOCK

kids. It is also a good viewing spot for watching the planes taking off from Kennedy Airport. Believe it or not, there is an authentic log cabin in New York City and it is in Canarsie and located at Flatlands Avenue and 93rd Street. Built in 1939, it was originally used as an ice cream parlor and has been in use as several other businesses over the years. In the early morning hours of March 1, 1962, American Airlines Flight Number 1 taking off from Kennedy Airport (then named Idlewild) crashed just after take off in nearby Pumpkin Patch Channel,

a remote area of marshland in Jamaica Bay. Numerous companies from Queens and Brooklyn responded including 257 and 170. A three alarm response from the fire department as well as Coast Guard helicopters and a low tide enabled personnel access to the otherwise inaccessible area for the rescue effort. They found no survivors and a large debris field on fire. All 95 passengers and crew were killed. The investigation into the cause determined it to be due to improper maintenance, leading to the crash. Throughout the years, the neighborhood has changed and be-

come more of mix of public housing and one and two family homes. There is also a large commercial area with warehouses supporting numerous industries. With many companies in Brooklyn (after all the borough has 2.3 million people) and several on top of each other, 257 and 170 have a large first due area compared to others, especially the truck, which covers an area equal to what two truck companies would cover. Engine Company 57 of the Brooklyn Fire Department was organized on December 15, 1897. It later changed to Engine 157 on October 1,1899. It then changed to

Engine 257 on January 1,1913. Their original quarters was at 1517 Rockaway Parkway. Ladder 170 was organized on October 18,1929 and this has been their only home. Battalion 58 has moved around over their young life. They were organized on December 27, 1969 and put in with 231 and 120 on Watkins Street. Relocated to 310 and 174 on Snyder Avenue in January of 1971, they then moved here in December of 1995. There have been three line of duty deaths in the history of the companies, one in the truck and two in the engine.

AHW fire in Brooklyn The FDNY responded to a fire at Box 1859, 422 Lincoln Ave in East New York, Brooklyn on April 3rd at 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they transmitted fire in the basement with extension to the first floor of a four story 20 x 40 multiple dwelling. This was not the first time they've came to a fire here, its been vacant for the passed seven years and lit up at least twice, according to neighbors. Making this the third time and another case for the fire marshal. One person on scene stated that it might have been a homeless guy, who he has seen there before and maybe the fire was a result of him trying to keep warm. However, no witnesses saw anyone leave the scene and a body was not found inside either. The fire will be investigated.
