5 Engine FDNY HOUSES FDNY HOUSES by Larry Woodcock

For anyone who has been to Manhattan and its many wonderful areas,14th Street stands out for many reasons, from the Meat Packing District to a major train stop. In addition, 14th Street is a two way street from river to river. For me, what I think of when I hear 14th Street is a fabulous ďŹ rehouse. Just off of 1st Avenue is the home of 5 Engine. It is one of the oldest ďŹ rehouses still in use today by the FDNY. It is a New York City landmark and one of the many ďŹ rehouses designed by Architect Napoleon Le Brun. Its elaborate design was common for the era and the architect was known for a are for the dramatic. Built with style, it will impress any construction aďŹ cionado. The East Village neighborhood has been home to many movements over the years and it has developed its own identity. Since the 1950s, it has been well known for its nightlife and artistic style. Widely considered to be the area between 14th Street and Houston Street, wealthy homes were spread out here along dirt roads in the early 19th Century until the great immigration of the Irish and Germans in the 1840s and 50s. This began the transformation to multi-unit apartment buildings that were needed to support the hard working middle class. Not unlike today, this was one of the ďŹ rst foreign language and ethnic neighborhoods in New York City, as well as the United States. It was commonly referred to as Little Germany. The fabric of the neighborhood took a huge hit when the ship, the General Slocum caught ďŹ re and sank in the East River on June 15,1904. At the time, the ship was carrying members of Saint Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church to a church picnic, mostly German Americans from the community. 1,021 of the 1,342 people on board died. The disaster was the worst loss of life in the city’s history in terms of human loss of life until September 11th. It remains the city’s worst maritime disaster. There is a monument dedicated to the ship located in Tompkins Square Park on the north side near 10th Street. Later waves of different nationalities settled in the neighborhood. In the mid 1960’s, it attracted musicians, artists and hippies; becoming a place for coun-

terculture. Many movements are credited with taking place here along with protests and riots through the years. Iconic rock halls like the Fillmore East and CBGB helped galvanize the east village as the birthplace of punk music, with many of the best groups in music history playing often. In 2012, the Landmarks and Preservation Commission of New York City announced that approximately 330 structures would become the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District. Included in the historic district is Webster Hall, a well known music venue and recording studio built in 1886. It is located at East 11th Street and has been host to many of the biggest names in music over the last forty years. Many of the buildings in the neighborhood have been remodeled over the years to show a more contemporary look or feel, with several being purchased and maintained by New York University, with the speciďŹ c use for dormitories for undergraduate students. One such building, Saint Ann’s Church on East 12th Street was remodeled as a dormitory with the stipulation by the community board that they preserve the original façade of the church. It was built in 1847. This was accomplished by making it stand alone in front of the new building. While walking the streets, you can still see Queen Anne, Italian Revival and late Victorian style buildings scattered throughout the area. Engine Company 5 was organized in September of 1865 and was located at the same address in their former volunteer quarters. That ďŹ rehouse was replaced with their current quarters, built in 1888. For a short time, they had a second section Engine 5(2) in service from March of 1884 until September of 1899 when it was disbanded. They have had six line of duty deaths in their history. Four alarms in the Bronx A four alarm fire tore through four buildings in the Bronx on December 16th leaving many homeless, but causing no serious injuries. At 10:45 a.m., a Bronx box was transmitted for Jackson Ave. and East 138th St. An engine company enroute found a working fire at Jackson and East 151st St. Units were re-directed to the corrected address.
