Kim Hinrichs is the Sales and Marketing Director at Regency Newcastle. She began her career in senior housing as the Marketing Director at a skilled nursing facility. She has since transitioned to Kim Hinrichs the retirement and assisted living side Sales/Marketing Director of the industry, giving her insight to the various housing choices available for seniors. This insight makes her the ideal counselor in helping you find the home and community that will fit your needs or those of a loved one. Having had a loved one in a skilled nursing facility, Kim understands that this decision is extremely personal and emotional. Kim’s compassion and patience is evident when you meet her, as well as her knowledge regarding the many options available.

egency Newcastle is one of the premier retirement communities in the Puget Sound area – located in the heart of the Eastside in Newcastle. We are not a typical retirement/ assisted living community. Where most communities claim to provide all that we do, we actually deliver on our promises!

From the ambiance of our building to the activities and care services we provide – we are second to no one – and the examples are numerous. Our licensed personal trainer leads our residents through a range of daily exercises – from yoga to light workouts with bands/weights to aqua therapy in our swimming pool. We have a house doctor who not only makes his appointments in our residents apartments, but can order x-ray and lab work be done “in house” in consultation with our nursing staff which helps us provide unparalleled care. And our PT/OT department can provide rehab services via your Medicare/private insurance. We also have a restaurant with chefs and wait staff that provide our residents three meals a day who take into account that most of our residents have challenges in tasting and enjoying their food. And we have three (3) parties a week: Margarita Mondays, Cocktail Wednesdays and Happy Hour Fridays with live entertainment. In addition to all these fun activities, we are known for the care we provide. Many of our 100 residents have some level of care needs, including dementia. But our philosophy of engaging all our residents in many social gatherings involving life and care, helps even cognitively impaired residents attain a much higher life satisfaction than would be possible without the variety of social engagements we provide. And it is often the case that upon the passing of one of our residents, we celebrate their passing with memorials and receptions right in our building. This helps provide closure for friendships formed among the residents. Our residents are part of the Greatest Generation – 80 to 95 year olds – all of whom have done so much to build the country we live in. Most of the men are Vets – as are a good percentage of our female residents. Many of the rest fought the battle on the home front - down at Boeing or in the ship yards. We even have a “Rosie the Riveter” in the building. And to be blunt, even though I am the General Manager I flirt shamelessly with 90 year-old women and slap the back of grey haired men – telling stories and providing comic relief to help all of us cope with the challenges of aging.

Muriel Vihinen

R

Muriel was born on April 20, 1913, in Gackle Sanbourn County, North Dakota and is one of our oldest yet most active residents. She has so much energy, we often have to stop her from racing down the halls! She married her husband Wayne on December 23, 1944 and was blessed with two boys; Gary and Glenn. She taught elementary school for more than 20 years in California, Montana and Alaska. She also taught English as a Second Language. Muriel enjoys watching sports such as Football and Baseball and she loves to swim. Almost every morning, she swims for an hour in our pool. She claims that her secret to a healthy life is to stay active and simply enjoy the life we are given. Such a lady certainly puts a spring into the life of our building!

Lou and Madeleine Guzzo

Madeleine and Lou met in high school in Cleveland and soon fell in love. They married on February 6, 1943 and just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. They have 4 children, 7 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren. Madeleine attended Notre Dame College in Cleveland and while raising their four children she kept busy by managing a dress shop called The Fashion Tree. She was very active at St. Edwards grade school and was in charge of the Mother’s Club at Holy Names Academy on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Lou Guzzo, the one-time crime busting editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, led his staff in the indictment of more than 55 top officials in government and the Seattle Police Department, the county prosecutor and the Chief of Police – all of them involved in a bribery and payoff scandal. He and his news staff also exposed a statewide nursing home racket and prevented race riots with a four month probe of the racism in the city and state. Lou was named Managing Editor at the P-I after nearly 20 years of service with The Seattle Times as the music, drama, film, and art critic. Later, he also served as a communications consultant to the US Atomic Energy Commision and as a Public Affairs Officer in the US State Department’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environment and Scientific Affairs. He also helped run Dixy Lee Ray’s successful campaign for Governor of Washington and was her chief policy counselor for her four years in office. In that position, he served as the Governor’s Cultural Affairs Director, her representative to the education commission and liaison to the Indian Tribes of Washington. After government service, Lou became a commentator and editorial consultant at Seattle’s KIRO TV and Radio. He is also a lifetime musician, composer and arranger. Lou has also authored more than 20 books. Two of them, Trashing the Planet and Environmental Overkill, he co-authored with the late Governor Ray; both were bestsellers. Today he remains active by publishing a daily blog on current events. He invites you to visit his website: www.louguzzo.com. Lou and Madeleine enjoy dancing, reading, traveling and golf. In fact, Madeleine got her first hole-in-one at 78 years old! They feel their greatest achievement in addition to their long marriage, is having raised four wonderful children. What a great couple to have here with us! Lou even helps around by offering talks on current events for the other residents.

“My mother loves her apartment and most of all: she loves the staff (even the therapists that push her ‘one more time’) She consistently reports that everyone is friendly, fast to respond to any request, and most important to her....caring. I’ve personally watched employees interacting with other residents with a simple, caring touch, a hug, and always with a smile. While most assisted living care facilities look the same and conform to the same industry standards on paper, Regency Newcastle exceeds the norm in all areas. More important to me is my own standard- would I want my mother to live here?....Absolutely...YES! I’m much more relaxed these days and confident my mother is getting the best care possible. To quote the MasterCard commercial....priceless!! Chris Durant

When I started looking for a new retirement facility for her, I came to the Regency Newcastle first because it was close to our home. The minute I walked in the door I knew this would be a place mom would like. I was greeted warmly by the staff and residents who didn’t have a clue who I was. As I looked around the first floor with the entry, dining area, a conversation area with a cobblestone fireplace, and the Bistro, I got a warm fuzzy feeling. I knew then that this was a place for mom. I would like to say “thank you” for being such a warm and caring retirement community. What a pleasure it has been to work with the staff. My mom, who is 95, had resided at another retirement facility in Bellevue for two years. This past February, she was hospitalized for a short period of time. When it was close to the time to return to her apartment, she refused to go back to the community. Sincerely, Julie Baima

Mom moved into Regency Newcastle last September and it took her a little while to feel comfortable but now she is happier than she has been in a long time. She looks better and is having regular meals. She is involved in many of the activities they offer. The employees have been very nice and always call if they have any medical questions about her. Management has been very responsive to any concerns that I have had since she has been living there. I would recommend Regency Newcastle for anyone that is looking for a quality, caring place to a family member live. have Melissa Ledbetter I could list so many special efforts made on his behalf. Many thanks to David who kept the old movies running… the root beer flowing… and to the rest of your wonderful staff who all contributed in different ways to Don’s well being. As soon as he arrived at the Regency Newcastle, he seemed to naturally settle into the gentle daily routine of the place. This was Don’s third stay at different assisted living communities within a very short time. The entire family knew we had found the best possible place for him. Sincerely, Randi P.S. I would recommend the atmosphere and care shown to the residents of Regency Newcastle.
