SEASON PREVIEW picked to win the Atlantic Sun Tournament. Belmont was picked to finish 11th in the conference, and did not have a player selected onto the Preseason All-Conference Team.

2010 PREVIEW

“It’s not unexpected. The program has been down in the past, and it’s something that we’re going to have to go out and prove to the league that we’re not the team of the past anymore,” said Coach Kuhlmeyer. “We’re a team that can compete with anybody, and can compete for the conference championship. If we can maintain our health, the conference is going to get a little bit of a rude awakening.”

In 2010, first year head coach inherits a team with plenty of experience. Seven of the team’s nine starters return to a roster that includes four seniors. This experience will benefit the Bruins as they pursue the next stepping stone for the young program: an Atlantic Sun Tournament bid.

PITCHERS “I really believe in this team,” stated Coach Kuhlmeyer. “There is an attitude and an excitement surrounding this team that has been missing. They have worked hard, bought into what we are trying to do, and are having fun.”

Ashley Byers, Sophomore – 6-0 Julie Harmon, Junior – 5-7 Devon Schmidt, Freshman – 5-6 The Bruins enter the 2010 season with a lot of youth at the pitching position. After losing Senior Sammi Parks, redshirt freshman Devon Schmidt will look to fill her shoes as the Bruins’ ace. Sophomore Ashley Byers gained valuable experience as a freshman that will serve her well in the upcoming season. Junior Julie Harmon will once again bolster the relief duties. These pitchers provide the Bruins’ a promising combination that will be poised to carry Belmont deep into the season.

THE SCHEDULE The Bruins’ experience will be put to the test early as they will travel to four tournaments after playing one home series against Austin Peay to open the season. Their 2010 schedule features nine teams that finished in the top 100 in last season’s NCAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI). One of those teams, Georgia, comes in with a preseason ranking of #7 in the nation.

Schmidt’s began her Belmont career in a very convincing manner as she posted a 2.8 ERA with 3 complete games and 46 strikeouts in only 50 innings. Her season was derailed by an injury, but is now poised for a resurgent season. “Devon is a very good pitcher. She has such a will to win, and combined with her ability to throw every pitch with great movement and spot it, her impact will be tremendous,” said Coach Kuhlmeyer.

“Our team is excited about the competition we are facing this season,” says Coach Kuhlmeyer about the season’s opponents. “As an athlete and a competitor, you want to face these kinds of teams to see what you are made of.”

Sophomore Ashley Byers will look to have a breakout season after gaining invaluable pitching experience as a freshman. Byers saw action in 16 games with 18 strikeouts last season.

After playing a doubleheader at home against Austin Peay on Feb. 13, the Bruins will travel to Mobile, Ala. to compete in the South Alabama Invitational, hosted by South Alabama, on Feb. 20 and 21. A doubleheader in Memphis lies in between the South Alabama Invitational and the Bruins’ next tournament, the Southern Mississippi Tournament. The tournament, held in Hattiesburg, Miss. and hosted by Southern Mississippi, kicks off against Jackson State on Feb. 27 and ends on Feb. 28.

Kuhlmeyer said about Ashley, “She brings a little bit of a different element. She throws hard and has incredible movement. She’s a presence at the plate, and we’re expecting a lot of good things from her on the mound this season.” Harmon racked up the second most innings of any pitcher on the Bruins’ squad last season. Making appearances in 22 games, Harmon recorded 27 strikeouts with one win.

A home doubleheader against Alabama A&M lies in between the Southern Mississippi Tournament and the Bruins’ next two tournaments, the Georgia Softball Classic and the Murray State Tournament. The Georgia Softball Classic opens on March 5 against host Georgia and ends on March 7. The Murray State Tournament opens on March 13 against host Murray State and will end on March 14.

“Schmidt, Byers, and Harmon gives us three legitimate pitchers,” said Coach Kuhlmeyer. “We are very fortunate, because a lot of schools don’t have that.” (Continued on page 6)

After wrapping up the non-conference tournament season, the next 22 of Belmont’s 34 remaining games will be held in the state of Tennessee. Belmont will end their season hosting the Lipscomb Bisons for the softball version of the Battle of Boulevard before traveling to Buies Creek, N.C. to battle defending A-Sun Champion Campbell. The Atlantic Sun Tournament will begin on May 6 in DeLand, Fla.

ATLANTIC SUN PREVIEW Lipscomb and 2009 Tournament Champion Campbell finished first and second, respectively, in the Atlantic Sun’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Lipscomb’s Senior Kellie Sirus was tabbed as the Preseason Player of the Year, and Campbell’s Senior, Brittany Stanley, was tabbed as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Senior Brooke Babington, Juniors Julie Harmon and Kelley Cash, and Sophomore Amanda Buntin will all compete for starting positions this season. Kelly Cash and Brooke Babington led the group in fielding percentage last season with a .959 and .962 percentage, respectively. Sara Bentley, Senior – 5-8 Cassie Bollin, Sophomore – 5-4 Courtney Elrod, Freshman – 5-4 Hannah Irwin, Sophomore – 5-4 Ashley Smith, Junior – 5-6 Dawn Thoni, Senior – 5-6 Erin Gier, Senior – 5-7 This year’s infielder group will be anchored by returning starters Dawn Thoni, Sara Bentley, and Cassie Bollin. As a Junior, Thoni started 43 games and was the team’s most consistent batter with an average of .294. Bentley has been a stalwart in the Bruins’ lineup over the years. Her 70 assists were tops for the Bruins last season. Bollin will add experience to the squad as she started 45 games last season. Senior Erin Gier has a plethora of experience in the infield as well as in the outfield, and will see her infield role increased this season. Newcomers Ashley Smith and Courtney Elrod will also look to have an immediate contribution. Smith comes to the Bruins after leading Wallace State Community College to a NJCAA National Championship and NJCAA National Championship Runner-Up in 2008 and 2009. Elrod comes to Belmont after a storied high school career in which she holds school records for homeruns, singles, doubles, RBIs, and batting average. “From a defensive stand point, we have the potential to be a very solid infield,” stated Coach Kuhlmeyer. “They work well together, and they are very sound fundamentally.”

“We can change the outfield depending on match ups. We are a good defensive outfield, and I’m comfortable with several different rotations out there. Kelly Cash is stepping up as a leader in center field, and we have several good arms in the outfield,” Coach Kuhlmeyer said about his outfield.

CATCHERS Hannah Irwin, Sophomore – 5-4 Stayci Cook, Sophomore – 5-9 The Bruins will benefit from having two catchers that were both acclimated to the collegiate game last season. Sophomore Stayci Cook was tied with the team’s best fielding percentage of 1.000. Her sophomore counterpart, Hannah Irwin, was not far behind with a .987. Each performed well at the plate as well, with a combined RBI total of 11. “Hannah is a very heady catcher. She’s a natural leader on the field, and she knows the game very well,” said Coach Kuhlmeyer. “Stayci possesses a very good arm, which will help us tremendously when she’s in there. I feel comfortable with both of our catchers, and the matchup will determine who we go with on game day. ”

We are confident he will take our softball program to new heights.” Prior to joining the staff at Wichita State, Kuhlmeyer spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Samford University. While in Birmingham, Kuhlmeyer served as the recruiting coordinator, first base coach, and as the primary hitting and catching instructor for the Bulldogs. During his stead, Samford registered its most successful stretch in school history, winning 27 or more games in three of his four campaigns. Belmont University

“FROM HERE TO ANYWHERE”

BELMONT UNIVERSITY fers master’s degrees in Business Administration, Accountancy, English, Education (including Sport Administration), Music, Nursing, and Occupational Therapy, and doctorates in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.

HISTORY AND HONORS In the mid-1800s, the campus was known as Adelicia Acklen’s Belle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by a century. The first educational institution on the estate was teh original Belmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary school through junior college education to young ladies. The school merged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious Ward-Belmont School for Women (1913-1951) and in 1951 became the coed Belmont College. In 1991, the college became Belmont University and, this year, began the 115th year of higher education on this site. Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in the academic area. Last year, U.S. News & World Report named Belmont University in the top 15 of the best colleges and universities in the South in the magazine’s “master’s” category.

Under the leadership of President Robert Fisher, Belmont celebrates more than a century of academic heritage. Perhaps most notably, Belmont stood out in the latest annual rankings of America’s best colleges and universities in U.S. News & World Report, labeled as “Best Colleges 2009 - Up-andcoming Masters Universities (South)” and a most cited “School to Watch.” BU is now ranked 11th in the South in the “Best Universities - Masters” category. Also noteworthy, Belmont has earned the Atlantic Sun Academic Champion Trophy seven of the last eight years - with over two-thirds of its student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in 2007-08. Moreover, Belmont has opened several impressive new facilities on campus which have enhanced the learning environment: the Massey Performing Arts Center, the Curb Event Center, and the newly-unveiled Gordon E. Inman Center. Then came word Belmont would host the 2008 Presidential Town Hall Debate, further exposing the school to a global audience. In short, Belmont has experienced remarkable growth and achievement increases in average ACT scores, innovative program development, impressive campus expansion, land and facility development and establishing itself as a national leader in quality improvement.

VISION Belmont’s vision is to be a premier teaching university bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. Belmont strives to enable men and women from diverse backgrounds to engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith. Believing that every student is created for a purpose in life, Belmont encourages students to explore their passions and develop their talents to meet the world’s needs. ACADEMICS AND MORE Belmont’s boundaries continue to extend beyond the Nashville campus through its Cool Springs campus south of Nashville and organized programs such as the Washington Center program and music business’ Belmont West in Los Angeles and Belmont East in New York City. Study-abroad programs place students in China, Costa Rica, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Spain. Belmont also serves as a regional center of the East-West Center for the Development of Asian Studies. Vital to the Belmont student experience are service learning, volunteerism and mission projects that invest in surrounding communities. Through the efforts of students and faculty, Belmont has touched lives in Nashville’s charitable organizations, its growing Hispanic community, area tutoring programs, neighboring businesses and mentoring programs, as well as inner-city and overseas mission projects, including trips to the Appalachian Mountains and the Ukraine. Among its student body of just over 5,000, are students from every state and more than 29 countries. In addition to seven baccalaureate degrees in over 75 areas of study, Belmont of-

Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000. During his tenure the university’s enrollment has risen by nearly 70 percent while the campus itself has expanded significantly with the additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complex and several new residence halls and parking garages. In addition, he worked to secure Belmont as the host site for teh 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, a historic event broadcast worldwide that also led to Fisher’s selection as 2008 Tennessean of the Year. But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new campus structures, stronger endowments or a larger student body. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education’s impact on each individual student. “The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont,” Fisher said, “and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life’s mission is to help create experiences that tranform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be.” Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, and M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Michael Strickland Director of Athletics 14th Year at Belmont Now entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics, Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department of Athletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAA Division I program to become one that sees annual success on the field and in the classroom. During his tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded the number of teams it fields, joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, enhanced its facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception of six new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University has built the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex, as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields at Rose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of his tenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic Sun Conference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure, Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of competition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurred athletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the first school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in three consecutive NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Adding conference championships in women’s cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball during the past academic year, Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 26 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships since becoming a member institution in 2001-02 - far and away the league standard. In addition, the school has hosted nine conference championships over the past five years, most recently the 2006 A-Sun Volleyball Championship. Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and presently serves as a member of the conference’s membership committee. In addition to the program’s success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 million facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece of the athletics program. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy seven of the past eight years.
