2016 is a significant time for Bell Shakespeare – it will be my first programme as Artistic Director, a role I am honoured to step into, as well as a year in which we will remember the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.

the 70,000+ students and teachers we reach in schools and in theatres, and even more students online. These are the audiences of our present and our future and we are committed to fostering them.

It was a teacher who first introduced me to Shakespeare, starting me on my personal journey of relishing the words and immersing myself in the worlds that he and his contemporaries created.

Our work is about sharing the timelessness of these classic works with all Australians and of enabling each audience member to find themselves reflected in stories of humanity and imagination. I invite you to join me on this journey.

I’ve never forgotten that first lesson and how fortunate I was to have a teacher who felt the need to empower us through these texts – giving meaning to works that have stood the test of time and remain not only relevant, but entertaining. Education is, and always will be, at the core of what Bell Shakespeare does. Without that first teacher to inspire me, I might have missed out on the fundamental realisation that in this modern, disposable and digital world, Shakespeare is ageless and enduring. There is nowhere this is more apparent than when we are in schools – the look on the faces of students as they discover a new world of words and acting never ceases to excite and inspire us. The work our arts educators and staff do creating and delivering these programmes is extraordinary and invaluable. I look forward to taking audiences of all ages, and from all corners of Australia, on a journey through Shakespeare’s world with us. Especially

Peter Evans, Artistic Director

The timeless words of William Shakespeare encourage us to imagine, to feel and to reminisce. Bell Shakespeare revels in the essential humanity of Shakespeare’s works, whilst allowing his plays to embrace their contemporary relevance on stages and in schools around Australia. We believe Shakespeare and other great works are not stuck in the past, but that they are the key to exploring our present and imagining our future. We value the beauty of Shakespeare’s ideas, language and imagery. His work becomes our lens, helping us find modern perspectives on timeless truths.

4 | We Are Bell Shakespeare Shakespeare’s work explores human experience at its limits. It was never just meant to be read. We believe the only way to truly appreciate his work is to see it brought to life through live performance.

These plays are not static. They’re constantly adapting, helping us make sense of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. And we’re not static either. We’ve been travelling the country for 25 years, bringing classic theatre to Australia, looking for new ways to educate, collaborate and recreate. Shakespeare and the other classic plays we present challenge our beliefs and urge us to see ourselves in a new light. Their ability to discover the things that make us human inspires us to make work that challenges preconceptions and encourages new interpretations and contemporary parallels — work that speaks to every age.

“BRILLIANT! Our students were blissfully exposed to a new perspective of Shakespeare’s plays that blew pre-existing, ‘this-is-boring’ ideas out the window. This perfectly pitched programme delivered in a way that in-class teaching alone cannot compete with. A valuable and entertaining experience that should be had by all during their English high school studies.” Kate Eadie, Taminmin College NT

Love is in the air in Athens – and it’s contagious. The royal wedding is just days away, Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia! Determined to be together, Hermia and Lysander escape to the forest, with Demetrius and Helena hot on their heels. But the young lovers are not alone. Nick Bottom and his hapless bunch of mechanicals have gathered to rehearse a play to be performed at the royal wedding. A mischievous sprinkling of fairies are also in the forest that night. The three worlds collide in an explosion of comic confusion that throws the future of all the lovers into jeopardy. A breathless 90-minute production that amplifies the magic, mirth and mayhem of Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy.
