BELL SHAKESPEARE

SEASON 2015 CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

We are Bell Shake

Season 2015

Shakespeare’s work explores human experience at its 3 limits. It was never just meant to be read. We believe the only way to truly appreciate his work is to see it brought to life through live performance. We believe Shakespeare and other great works are not stuck in the past, but that they are the key to exploring our present and imagining our future. We value the beauty of Shakespeare’s ideas, language and imagery. His work becomes our lens, helping us find modern perspectives on timeless truths. These plays are not static. They’re constantly adapting, helping us make sense of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. And we’re not static either. We’ve been travelling the country for 25 years, bringing classic theatre to Australia, looking for new ways to educate, collaborate and recreate. Shakespeare and the other classic plays we present challenge our beliefs and urge us to see ourselves in a new light. Their ability to discover the things that make us human inspires us to make work that challenges preconceptions and encourages new interpretations and contemporary parallels — work that speaks to every age.

Bell Shakespeare

FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

Back in 1990, few people would have held out much hope that Bell Shakespeare would one day be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Arts companies had a pretty dire record of crash and burn and here was a move to create a national touring company concentrating on the works of Shakespeare; a company, moreover, that employed fifteen actors but had no government subsidy and only a tiny scrap of corporate sponsorship.

Season 2015

Co-Artistic Directors: John Bell AO and Peter Evans

That Bell Shakespeare survived and thrived is no miracle. It is a testimony to the determination of a small group of artists and the generosity and enthusiasm of hundreds of supporters who believed in the mission of keeping the classics alive, making them our own, and sharing them with our fellow Australians wherever they might be on this vast continent. Most of all it is a tribute to the faith and generosity of the late Anthony Gilbert AM whose initial donation gave the company wings and who bankrolled it for many years as it struggled to keep afloat. Twenty five years later Bell Shakespeare has played to nearly 2.5 million Australians. Every year we tour capital cities, regional centres and communities in the outback. Our Learning programme reaches approximately 80,000 students in over 300 schools around the country and reach another 75,000 online. Our workshops provide training and experience for teachers and students as well as life enhancing experiences for young people in indigenous communities and juvenile justice centres. We have taken our work to England, Japan, Malaysia New Zealand, Scotland and Singapore – but our focus will always be on the evolution of an Australian classical theatre; and we have been instrumental in launching and developing the careers of hundreds of actors, designers, directors, musicians and other theatre workers as well as maintaining a research and development arm (Mind’s Eye) to create new work. Tony Gilbert would be proud indeed to survey the result of his visionary philanthropy. To celebrate 25 years of achievement we are pleased to bring you a truly irresistible array of sublime works, a showcase of Shakespeare’s genius and infinite variety. As You Like It, is the most joyous and beguiling of comedies, invoking memories of long summer days spent idling with adolescent love and the freedom of nature’s wilderness. But like all Shakespeare comedies, it has a taste of the bitter-sweet, an edge of melancholy enhanced by an awareness of the transience of things, of the romantic idyll, of people who ‘fleet their time carelessly, as they did in the golden world’. Love, in all its many manifestations, is debated to and fro, the romantic idealism of Rosalind and Orlando set against the dour misanthropy of Jaques, the flirtatious teasing of Phoebe and unabashed carnality of Touchstone the clown. Shakespeare’s charming musical pastoral is crowned with Rosalind, the most vivacious and articulate of all his romantic heroines. The Tempest embodies a rich and satisfying conclusion to Shakespeare’s career in the theatre – as actor, playwright and impresario.

6

‘THIS IS WHY WE STILL DO THE BARD’S PLAYS — THERE’S TRUTH AND HUMANITY IN ALL OF THEM STILL, IT JUST TAKES THE RIGHT SET OF INGREDIENTS.’ The Sunday Herald Sun 2014 (Henry V)

Bell Shakespeare

Emerging from the period of the four great tragedies, he finds a pacific calm in spinning his so called romances – mature mythological fairy-tales whose profound wisdom is cloaked in music, masque, lyrical verse and occasional slapstick. All dramatic devices are employed to create a total theatrical experience. Above all, these final Romances embrace common themes of love, forgiveness and reconciliation. In the case of The Tempest, Prospero, the great magus, has to learn to overcome his urge to revenge himself on those who have wronged him. Only by letting go of his rage, his status and his magical powers can he leave the isolation of his desert island and rejoin the mainstream of humanity. The serious themes of The Tempest are handled with a light touch, and the lasting impression is of a gorgeous parable replete with music and child-like wonder – an enchanting and magical experience. Hamlet is, of course, the most hardy perennial, a play capable of infinite variations and interpretations. The greatest points of interest in staging Hamlet relate to who is playing the role and who is directing the production. In this case we have two aces up our sleeve: Josh McConville, whose work has thrilled audiences on both stage and screen over the last few years, will bring a new kind of charisma and ferocity to the role, and his partnership with director Damien Ryan is intensely exciting. Damien’s production of Henry V for Bell Shakespeare in 2014 was the culmination of ten years work with this company. As you will see for yourselves, there are all manner of events happening throughout 2015 to celebrate 25 years of achievement. We hope to enjoy the pleasure of your company at many of them. You should also note that our endeavours are not limited to the main stage. That is only half the picture. Our vast Learning programme continues to expand, performing in schools all over Australia as well as on the main stage. Our workshops also continue to reap rich rewards for all who take part in them. The phenomenon that is Bell Shakespeare may not be a miracle, but sometimes it feels like something very close to one. We invite you to share the vision with us and maintain its passion well into the future. Enjoy our 25th season! John Bell AO and Peter Evans Co-Artistic Directors

As You Like It

Season 2015

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTOR PETER EVANS

With George Banders, John Bell, Gareth Davies, Alan Dukes, Zahra Newman, Kelly Paterniti, Dorje Swallow,Tony Taylor & Abi Tucker

She loves him and he loves her. But she must dress as a he, and now there’s another her. Passionate and disarming, As You Like It is about a love so grand, our heroine is willing to break all the rules of romance to win the boy. Exiled to the Forest of Arden, Rosalind finds danger and mischief lurking behind every tree. She’s in love with Orlando, but must dress as the boy Ganymede. And so begins a gender bending courtship that shows that true love really does conquer all – even with a bit of cross dressing thrown in. The beguiling and chaotic As You Like It – one of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedies – will be directed by Co-Artistic Director, Peter Evans, fresh from a stellar year in 2014 (Tartuffe, The Dream, Intimate Letters). Featuring an inspiring cast, including John Bell as the melancholic Jaques, and the exuberant Zahra Newman (twice Helpmann Award nominated actress) as Rosalind. For anyone who’s ever risked it all for love, you’ll love As You Like It.

Hamlet

Season 2015

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTOR DAMIEN RYAN

With Josh McConville & Matilda Ridgway

Dark acts result in darker consequences. And there is little that’s darker and more complicated than the act of revenge. A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war. Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre’s most fascinating characters. Damien Ryan, returning to Bell Shakespeare following the critically acclaimed Henry V in 2014, will deliver a new production of Hamlet, infused with the passion, contemplation and emotion that Shakespeare’s compelling poetry cries out for. Josh McConville (Griffin Theatre Company’s The Boys and Sydney Theatre Company’s Mojo) and Matilda Ridgway (Sport For Jove’s A Doll’s House) will delve into the depths of the complexity, violence, philosophical reflection, madness and maddening seduction of Hamlet.

There’s a storm raging within Prospero, almost as violent as the storm he conjures around his remote island. Exiled twelve years earlier, Prospero is a powerful magician, still seething with anger and a desire for revenge having been banished to his island and usurped by his brother Antonio. And now that brother has been stranded on the same island. From such furious beginnings erupts Shakespeare’s magical journey of liberty through redemption. Gripping in its beauty and whimsy, The Tempest is a delightful tale of cavorting spirits, music and merriment, love and loss, and finally reconciliation and forgiveness. John Bell, who has performed in The Tempest three times but never directed it, celebrates Bell Shakespeare’s 25th anniversary by undertaking this enchanting tale. A superb cast, led by Brian Lipson, will capture the lightness and beauty of one of Shakespeare’s last and greatest works.
