FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

5

Welcome to our 2019 season. This year we introduce three brilliant new shows to our in-schools touring. We’re working again with the comic genius of Andy Griffiths in a new take on Romeo and Juliet, for junior students. Words, Words, Words is a celebration of Shakespeare’s language, demonstrating literary techniques in action. And Shakespeare: The Human Experience is a stunning insight into the myriad ways Shakespeare captured humanity in all its glory and flaws. From mischievous comedy to the greatest speeches ever written, these performances will bring rough magic and deep learning into your school. In Sydney and Melbourne we’re staging a thrilling new production of Macbeth, intertwining new technologies with the ancient world. John Bell returns in the title role of The Miser. And Shakespeare’s beloved romantic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, tours to capital cities and regional venues around the country. Plus one more show yet to be announced. We’re once again offering 30 teachers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with us in the Regional Teacher Mentorship; three scholarships for young actors through the John Bell Scholarship; and our popular Work Experience program for twelve students in Years 10–11. Whether we see you in a school, a theatre, or online with our digital initiatives, we wish you an enriching 2019.

IN SCHOOLS IN-SCHOOL PERFORMANCES

7

The Players are Bell Shakespeare’s touring ensemble of actors, reaching schools across Australia with dynamic, accessible and entertaining Shakespeare performances. Professional artists will deliver age-appropriate performances to challenge and inspire your students and support your teaching of Shakespeare. We are excited to launch three brand new shows for 2019. JUST ROMEO AND JULIET! YEAR 7 45 MINS + 10 MIN Q&A Originally by William Shakespeare Messed around with by Andy Griffiths Adapted by Joanna Erskine Following the smash-hit success of Just Macbeth! (abridged), Andy Griffiths is back with a very silly version of the greatest love story ever told. When Andy, Danny and Jen find themselves in a school production of Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers’ journey is derailed in hilarious fashion. Using Shakespeare’s original text and Griffiths’ beloved characters, Just Romeo and Juliet! is sure to have junior students across Australia learning and laughing. Classic tragedy collides with side-splitting comedy in this entertaining introduction to Shakespeare for Year 7 students. WORDS, WORDS, WORDS YEARS 7-9 50 MINS + 10 MIN Q&A By Joanna Erskine A lively exploration, interrogation and celebration of language and words, told with power and humour by Shakespeare’s characters. Words, Words, Words will take your students on an entertaining and informative journey of epic proportions across Shakespeare’s canon, via the vehicle of literary techniques. Whether it’s dramatic irony, prose and verse structure, sonnets, soliloquies, or iambic pentameter, we’ll decode and demystify what’s on the page, on the stage. Do your students know their stichomythia from their anaphora? Words, Words, Words is the perfect companion to classroom study, demonstrating language analysis in action. SHAKESPEARE: THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE YEARS 10-12 50 MINS + 10 MIN Q&A By Joanna Erskine

Secondary 2019

To this day, Shakespeare remains unrivalled in his ability to understand humanity. By holding up a mirror to nature, he shone a light on our glories and flaws, and explored what it means to be human. This powerful new show for senior students uses key speeches and scenes from across Shakespeare’s canon to chart representations of individual and collective human experiences. Featuring excerpts from a wealth of plays including The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, Hamlet, Richard III, Othello, Henry IV Part One, and the refugee speech from Sir Thomas More, the show provides rich debate, stimulating ideas and critical analysis for senior study. Shakespeare: The Human Experience connects students’ own experiences with the universality of Shakespeare’s characters, and the wider world around them.

IN THEATRES MACBETH

17

By William Shakespeare Directed by Amy Hardingham & Huw McKinnon The charm’s wound up. Ancient Scotland is bridged with the contemporary world in a brand-new production of Macbeth, set in a media-rich, audio-visual landscape. Three teenage girls take hold of a camera and the narrative as the Weird Sisters, presenting the play through a fresh lens. Using live video projection, technology will intersect the plot and characters, as Macbeth’s bloodthirsty campaign rages towards its end. Watching, documenting and interfering with the medieval world, the Weird Sisters hold the fate of the play in their hands, and not just with their prophecies. It’s Shakespeare’s original language within an innovative and immersive framework that urgently asks why this play, and why now? WHO’S IT FOR?

IN THEATRES THE MISER

19

By Moliere Directed by Peter Evans Wealthy skinflint, Harpagon is so cheap he’d rather bury his money in the backyard and steal oats from his horse before seeing a dollar spent. Welcome to the world of The Miser, where passion and penny pinching go head to head in a ribald comedy of manners. John Bell stars as the stingy, avaricious and obnoxious Harpagon, a money-lender who makes Ebenezer Scrooge look generous. This is a man who loves nothing more than his beloved cash — not even his own children. With his eye on the prize — an inappropriately young bride who already has her sights set on his son — Harpagon is prepared to sacrifice his children and his dignity to win it all. First performed in 1668, The Miser is the well-known satire by French playwright Molière, known for other classics such as Tartuffe and The Misanthrope. Bell Shakespeare’s Founder, John Bell, will be directed by Artistic Director, Peter Evans, in this deliciously mean comedic Molière adaptation, exploring the depth of human greed, lust and manipulation. A delightful farce about a tight-arse lacking in class. WHO’S IT FOR?

Years 10-12.

HOW LONG?

HOW MUCH?

IN THEATRES MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

21

By William Shakespeare Directed by James Evans Claudio and Hero are deeply in love. Beatrice and Benedick would rather swap sassy insults than sweet nothings. Much Ado About Nothing is a saucy and razor-sharp battle of wits between the bickering Beatrice and Benedick who wield words as weapons, their banter betraying their love for each other. Claudio however is quickly consumed by envy and his idyllic world threatens to come tumbling down as he humiliates Hero. Beatrice and Benedick must join forces to defend true love – even if they can’t recognise it in themselves. But will truth and honesty win the day, and does love really conquer all? Directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director, James Evans (Julius Caesar) and starring Zindzi Okenyo (Antony and Cleopatra, MTC’s An Ideal Husband) as Beatrice, this Much Ado About Nothing will be a powerful exploration of the struggle for identity and self-knowledge in a male-dominated world. The pursuit of love is framed in a social context that enhances the darker themes in this timeless comic gem. Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s contemporary comedies where romance is thwarted by dastardly plots, misinformation, false accusations, broken promises, and bumbling cops. Or is it?
