Shakespeare’s work explores human experience at its limits. It was never just meant to be read. We believe the only way to truly appreciate his work is to see it brought to life through live performance. We believe Shakespeare and other great works are not stuck in the past, but that they are the key to exploring our present and imagining our future. We value the beauty of Shakespeare’s ideas, language and imagery. His work becomes our lens, helping us find modern perspectives on timeless truths. These plays are not static. They’re constantly adapting, helping us make sense of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. And we’re not static either. We’ve been travelling the country for 23 years, bringing classic theatre to Australia, looking for new ways to educate, collaborate and recreate. Shakespeare and the other classic plays we present challenge our beliefs and urge us to see ourselves in a new light. Their ability to discover the things that make us human inspires us to make work that challenges preconceptions and encourages new interpretations and contemporary parallels — work that speaks to every age.

Welcome to our 2014 Learning programme. At Bell Shakespeare, education is at the heart of everything we do. When John founded the Company in 1990, he was in the very first Actors At Work team, performing for students in their school halls. We are honoured that our education programmes are often a student’s first experience of Shakespeare, and sometimes, live performance. It’s something we don’t take for granted. And we work hard to deliver high quality learning experiences for as many Australian students and teachers as we can reach each year. Whether you are a long-time Bell Shakespeare school or new to our work, you might be interested in the special programmes we deliver, outside of what’s contained in this brochure. We’ve included a snapshot of our many outreach programmes on page 26. This year we’re excited to announce that we’ll be presenting the Scottish Play as our dedicated schools show, at Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne. The #MacbethExperiment
What’s done cannot be undone – or can it? In the lead up to the production, Bell Shakespeare actors will kickstart an online dialogue with students across Australia around the dilemmas of Macbeth. Each week questions will be posed and video content uploaded, ripe for discussion. An innovative and truly interactive experience, students will upload self-generated content, reinterpreting and reimagining Macbeth through image, sound and film. Cracking open the Scottish Play will become a national conversation. Plus, for the first time, Bell Shakespeare will throw open the doors to the rehearsal room and offer exclusive behind-the-scenes access via social media. Students will be exposed to every aspect of the rehearsal process from design brainstorming through to dress rehearsal. Watch as the actors and director experiment with the text and breathe new life into these iconic characters on the rehearsal room floor.

Such Sweet Sorrow By Matt Edgerton & Joanna Erskine Director Janine Watson Returning in 2014, Such Sweet Sorrow takes students on a journey through the highs and lows of Shakespeare’s greatest love story, Romeo And Juliet. Love, hate, revenge, joy, brawls, weddings, life and death – it’s fair to say this play has it all. When the ghost of Hamlet’s father visits him with a damning revelation, the young prince’s world spirals around him. As a young prince, Mamillius is a boy who should want for nothing. But the dark shadow of his erratic father, King Leontes, looms large over the royal household. Mamillius watches in horror as his father, King Leontes, wrongly accuses his pregnant mother, Hermione, of adultery. When Mamillius’ sister is born, Leontes mistakenly believes the baby is not his own, and orders her to be abandoned in the wild. Distraught by the family trauma, Mamillius and Hermione both die of heartbreak. Too late, Leontes realises his folly and vows to mourn for the rest of his life. It’s lonely at the top. When Henry V is manipulated by church advisors, taunted by French royalty and betrayed by English nobles, he has all the ammunition he needs to lash out and invade France. Or does he? Having executed conspirators, and vanquished enemy forces in Harfleur, Henry’s army is ‘weak and sickly’ as it staggers towards a showdown at Agincourt. But Henry has one last weapon up his sleeve: the power of words. And it may just be enough to save his men, his country and himself. In an incredibly exciting new production of Henry V, Damien Ryan directs a contemporary version of this play inspired by a true story – for 71 consecutive nights during the Blitz in 1941, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed plays including the works of Shakespeare and would perform them for others in the shelter. Told through the prism of boys caught in a modern conflict, our production will expose, in equal measure, the stirring heights and troubling depths of Henry V. On a broader level, it will be an unflinching examination of political spin, patriotism, religion, class, brotherhood and leaders of men.

Religious guru Tartuffe appears to have the solution, and he moves into Orgon’s home to offer salvation. The trouble is, Orgon’s family don’t want to be saved by Tartuffe; they can see he is a hypocrite and a fraud. He also proves to be a wily adversary, adept at getting out of the tightest of corners. Tartuffe exploits Orgon’s blind faith, deceiving his host into betrothing him to his daughter, before making a play for his wealth and his wife. The family decide that desperate times call for desperate measures and hatch an audacious plot to expose Tartuffe. But time is running out and the arch manipulator has even more dirty tricks up his sleeve... Peter Evans’ contemporary production and Justin Fleming’s sparkling Australian translation combine to showcase all the mischief and irreverence of Molière’s classic farce. Young lovers Hermia and Lysander are deeply in love, but Hermia’s father has other ideas. He wants Demetrius to marry Hermia, and the law is on his side. Desperate to be together, Hermia and Lysander decide to elope, meeting in a moonlit forest. In hot pursuit is Demetrius, who in turn is followed by a lovelorn Helena. Also in the forest that night are a bunch of hapless tradies, and a sprinkling of mischievous fairies. What could possibly go wrong? Answer: everything! As the three worlds collide, Peter Evans’ pacey production amplifies the magic, mirth and mayhem. Because Shakespeare wasn’t kidding when he said the course of true love never ran smooth.

By day you will participate in a range of Shakespeare masterclasses covering some of his greatest plays, presented by Bell Shakespeare experts. Regional Teacher Scholarship Supported by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation
The Regional Teacher Scholarship gives 12 teachers the opportunity to travel to Bell Shakespeare HQ in Sydney for an intensive four days of tailored Professional Learning. It’s a chance to hone your Drama and English teaching skills, learn innovative techniques for teaching Shakespeare and see live theatre. It’s also a perfect opportunity to build lasting networks with other teachers in regional and remote areas, and with Bell Shakespeare. Since 2007, 84 teachers have been recipients of our Regional Teacher Scholarship, passing on the benefits to their colleagues, students and local community. To this day we are in regular contact with them as they act as Shakespeare ambassadors in their communities. We have been able to work with many again in the form of residencies, masterclasses and in-school performances. We are searching for the next 12 recipients to take up the task of becoming a Shakespeare champion in their region. If you are currently teaching English or Drama in a regional or remote school and can demonstrate how you and your school community will benefit from the programme, we encourage you to apply. Six weeks before the performance date we’ll send out your final invoice and after that time no further changes or cancellations can be made to your booking. MY STUDENTS AREN’T STUDYING HAMLET OR ROMEO AND JULIET – WHY SHOULD I BOOK ACTORS AT WORK? Our Actors At Work shows provide a unique live theatre experience for your students. If they’ve never studied Shakespeare, seeing our young professional actors perform their condensed, fun and highly interactive versions of the plays will build your students’ enthusiasm for studying his works in the future. If they are already familiar with Shakespeare, the performances are excellent for furthering your students’ understanding of the characters and plays. Here at Bell Shakespeare we believe that Shakespeare’s plays were meant to be seen and performed!
OUR STAGE DOESN’T MEET YOUR SPACE REQUIREMENTS. WHERE ELSE CAN YOUR ACTORS PERFORM? The space required for our Actors At Work shows is a clear, flat floor space that’s 8 metres across and 6 metres deep. Although the actors can certainly perform on a stage in a theatre setting, if this isn’t available they are more than happy to perform on the floor space of your gym/ hall, in a large combined classroom, a common room, or a library – any space that’s indoors, and has enough space for your students to be seated in front of the performance area. Check with us if you’re unsure. WE’D LOVE TO BOOK AN ACTORS AT WORK SHOW BUT OUR SCHOOL IS TOO SMALL SO WE CAN’T AFFORD IT. You don’t have to miss out! If you don’t have enough students to cover costs we recommend contacting other local schools in your area to see if they’re interested in a combined performance. In regional areas we sometimes perform at a small school with students from other local schools in attendance to help reduce per student costs. Schools can liaise regarding logistics and we’ll arrange the performance and payment with the main contact. Not sure where to start? Give us a call and we can help. We know that Shakespeare’s plays have the capacity to allow audiences of all walks of life to see themselves reflected and transformed. For us, education isn’t just what happens in a classroom. Our work in education reaches far beyond the programmes in this brochure, and we are committed to providing access to the power of Shakespeare for the most marginalised and disadvantaged Australians, every year. Our Actors At Work shows tour to some of the most isolated places in Australia, offering schools complimentary performances. Each year we visit regions as remote as Broken Hill NSW, Cloncurry QLD, Marree SA and Port Hedland WA.

Our regional and remote residency programme allows us to send our arts educators into rural, remote and Indigenous communities around Australia for up to two weeks at a time, delivering specialised programmes designed with the schools involved. We’ve done everything from entire school introductions to Shakespeare for K–12, right through to staging an adaptation of Romeo And Juliet on an AFL field in Tennant Creek blending Shakespeare’s text with local Aboriginal languages. Our urban outreach residencies allow us to work with schools like Collingwood English Language School, where all students are from refugee or newly-arrived migrant backgrounds. Students receive 10 weeks of Shakespeare storytelling workshops with a specialist ESL-trained arts educator, as well as complimentary tickets to a Bell Shakespeare show.

We work with young men and women in Juvenile Justice centres, delivering Actors At Work performances, followed by a five-week workshop programme focusing on a specific Shakespeare play. Our Hearts In A Row programme offers socially and geographically disadvantaged Australians a row of seats at a Bell Shakespeare production, as well as programmes, drink vouchers and a special pre-show talk with a Bell Shakespeare actor. Benefiting groups have included: Youth Off The Streets, The Wayside Chapel and Menindee Central School. We offer regional schools attending our national touring production of Henry V complimentary pre-show workshops through our Regional Access Programme. Through our
Regional Performance Scholarship, budding young actors have the opportunity to spend a week at Bell Shakespeare HQ in Sydney working with the Company and observing rehearsals. Each year 12 teachers are awarded the Regional Teacher Scholarship and spend four days with us receiving specialist Shakespeare training. This is only some of what we do each year. With all these programmes, we have incredible stories to tell. Just ask us. Please read carefully the terms and conditions to which you are agreeing. Changes and cancellations to bookings cannot be accepted over the phone and must be made in writing via email, letter or fax. The booking forms a binding agreement between Bell Shakespeare and the school, and the school is liable to make payments by the due dates. Bell Shakespeare will endeavour to accommodate any subsequent request for changes but reserves the right to retain the original arrangements and charge the full fee. Cancellations by Bell Shakespeare will result in rescheduling at a mutually agreed time or Bell Shakespeare will refund any payment made by the school.
