Betsy Ollhoff (center) and a team of volunteers staff the Belle Plaine Food Shelf. The food shelf is celebrating its sixth anniversary this week. It serves over 1,000 families annually (duplicated count) and benefits greatly from the generosity of the community, Ollhoff says.

Grateful to Community, Food Shelf Celebrating Anniversary They would like to put themselves out of business but know that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. So in the meantime, the volunteers at the Belle Plaine Food Shelf will continue to help people who need help. Sunday (July 9), the food shelf will celebrate its sixth anniversary. “All we wanted to do was meet a need we knew wasn’t being met,” said Betsy Ollhoff, the food shelf board’s president. “We were worried there were people who were hungry.”

Any doubt that the food shelf wasn’t making much of a difference rests in the annual report of the people it serves. In 2015, the food shelf served 1,525 families (a duplicated count), with 126 families making use of the service for the first time. That’s an 8 percent increase in the number of new families using the food shelf over the previous year. “We were worried at first people wouldn’t come,” she said. Senior citizens accounted for about 6 percent of the food

shelf’s clientele in 2015. Just over 50 percent are adults with the remaining 42 percent being children. “There are families out there who are just one (missed) paycheck away from needing us,” Ollhoff said.

know how to retire. “I’ve been busy every day of my life. I’m going to be slowing down a bit,” he said. “I’m still going to work long days; I’m just going to work fewer of them.” Koepp has every reason to retire. Though still healthy just after his 80th birthday, the aches and pains that come with time and decades working on concrete while servicing vehicles are just starting to catch up with him a bit. He plans to cut back on new customers and service the cars and trucks of well-established customers and

Under the direction of the fair board, Rhonda Kucera and Tom Hesse are leading efforts to prepare the fairgrounds for the Scott County Fair July 26-30.

A New Way to Prepare for the Fair Over the years, the Scott County Fair Board has relied on the talents of an individual general manager to prepare the county fair and its grounds for what is billed as “The Five Best Days of Summer.” Norm Pint’s retirement earlier this year presented the board with an opportunity to take advantage of talents of an existing staff member and a newcomer. They believe the approach is one that will present the fair as an enjoyable experience for those who attend the fair later this month (July 26-30). Rhonda Kucera is the fair’s office administrator who joined the fair board staff in 2014. Her work includes scheduling events and attractions during

the fair’s five-day run and also during the off-season. She also works with vendors who’ll be at the fair and, with help from staffers Anna Brekke and Katie Gauguie, prepares promotional information for print and social media. The fair board wants the fairgrounds in St. Lawrence Township as busy as possible during the weeks when the fair is not in operation. Events like Muck Fest, dog shows, Autumn Fare, concerts, bridal shows, Motokazie races, and other events will have the fairgrounds busy during the year. She handles inquiries about storage rental in the fairgrounds’ buildings. Tom Hesse is the other half of the team leading preparation of

the fairgrounds. He joined the team in 2016. His job is to have the 80-acre fairgrounds ready for the thousands of people who will visit in three weeks. He is also responsible for making sure it is ready to host the myriad of events on the calendar during the year. Hesse’s biggest challenge is making sure the new restroom building is ready for use when the fair opens the last week of July. Construction on the long-

Koepp (continued from page 1) family members. “If my health is good, I’ll keep working,” he said. “If I wasn’t working, I don’t think I’d live very long.” LaVonne Koepp, Wes’s wife of nearly six decades, said he’ll likely keep working in some fashion until the day he dies. “That’s the way he’s been his whole life,” she said. Koepp has taken up walking for relaxation and to keep active. Working or not, he’ll likely always be outside doing something. When Wes sits down inside, he usually doses off for a quick nap before heading back to work, she said.

Always Something

After all, if it weren’t for longtime customers and friends, Koepp wouldn’t be in business. Back in the 1970s, the City of Belle Plaine was a little concerned about granting Koepp a permit to build a shop and begin a home-based auto and truck repair business in a residential area. The city feared the clutter and excess pieces that come with such a business would litter the property. The shop is 39 feet deep by 22 feet wide, he said. But when a few dozen or more of Koepp’s friends and customers visited a city council meeting to express their support for Koepp’s plan, the council decided to revisit the issue. He was granted the permit. He’s proud of the tidy appearance of his business. The yard is immaculate, and the garden proudly contains the crafty work of Wes and LaVonne’s six grandchildren. They also have eight great-grandchildren. “I put flowers around the outside of the house. You can’t grow grass against cement,” he said. The only signs of a homebased business are the shop clothes that are Wes’s daily uniform and the three garages on the residential lot he and LaVonne bought in 1958. One of the garages is attached to the house. The detached shop and a small garage are tucked neatly

in the backyard. Having grown up on the 160acre family farm along German Road (County Road 53) in Blakeley Township, Koepp has worked several jobs over the years. He has driven a milk route, worked a block and tile job, and was employed by Frank Johnson Implement and Mueller Excavating, before opening his own shop. In the early 1960s, Koepp worked in a small garage when Ray Meierbachtol, a local farmer, asked Koepp to fix the brakes on one of his trucks. The satisfactory work brought additional requests. Koepp soon realized he could make it on his own operating his own shop. The work Koepp performs on trucks and vehicles is all self-taught. He learned it while working on the farm since he was always fixing some truck or tractor that wasn’t working quite right. His older brother, Fredrick, called Wes “the grease monkey on the farm.” Years later, Koepp worked on trucks for pulling events. He and his family (son Scott and daughter Wendy Theis) made several trips to pulling competitions around the country in the 1980s and ‘90s, Theis said. They traveled from Tomah, Wis. to Montana, from Minnesota to Oklahoma with two trucks, “The Black Stud” and “The Bearstown Shaker.” Their trucks were among the top 10 in points for their class. Koepp has no plans for working on the big trucks anymore. He enjoys helping friends and taking care of family. Koepp tells a story of working on one of his son-in-law’s big trucks for his excavating business. The work was a family affair, with several family members working on various facets of servicing the big dump truck. It was the idea of spending time with family that made the work seem anything but difficult. “That was just great. It was just wonderful,” he said. “Being with family, that’s the most important thing.”

‘Arty Smarty’ The Belle Plaine Library hosted the ‘Arty Smarty’ expressionist art program Thursday. Students read about expressionism and then put the style into practice. (Right) Aiden Little (foreground) and Logan Potter worked on their designs. The library is also host to an outdoor chess board. (Above) Nathan Ludwig (left) introduced his cousin, Miles Muehlenhardt, to chess using the new plastic oversized pieces. The chess set and checker pieces are available upon request from library staff Tuesday through Friday.

John J. Walerius John James Walerius, 75 of Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Fr. Brian Lynch, Fr. Roger Hessian and Chaplain Helmar Heckel will ofďŹ ciate. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Interment will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine. John was born on January 29, 1942 to Adolph and Dorothy (Odenthal) Walerius. John spent his entire life on his family farm in Belle Plaine. He attended St. Peter & Paul Catholic Elementary School. In June, 1960, John graduated from Belle Plaine High School. He drove truck for Belle Plaine Block & Tile while continuing to farm with his dad. John was drafted into basic training in the Army in 1964. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood and served in Germany for 18 ½ months. On his return home, he continued farming with his dad, while also assembling farm equipment for Siemon Implement. John married Janice Thomason on September 25, 1971. They were blessed with three children, Scott, Jaymie and Lindsey. He was an exceptional bowler and even bowled a ‘298’. Tractor pulling was another passion of his. John and his son, Scott won several trophies with his prized 4020. After milking cows for nearly 60 years, he sold the cows and decided to take on his next adventure of lawn mowing. He was hired by Elmer and Dale Stier at Valley View Golf Course and worked there for 18 ½ years. John’s faith was very important to his life and he shared his faith with his children and grandchildren. His rosary was his constant companion whether he was mowing grass or working in the ďŹ eld. John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janice; daughters, Jaymie (Erick) Meade and Lindsey Walerius; Sister, Sr. Donna Walerius; sisters-in-law, Bev (Ray) Ince and Kim Thomason; and brother-in-law, Roger (Jean) Thomason; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Julian A. Pieper The morning of Wednesday, June 28, 2017, Julian Anton Pieper, passed away peacefully, at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. For 95 years, his life was built around family; he had a great love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most importantly, Julian taught his family about faith and how to love our Lord Jesus Christ, though he did so quietly and through example. A time of gathering was held on Sunday, July 2 from 4-7 p.m. ending with a 7 p.m. prayer service. An additional visitation took place Monday, July 3 from 9:30-10:45 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11 a.m., all at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Father Timothy Yanta presided. Julian was laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Jordan Vets Honor Guard. On the Pieper family homestead in Marystown, Julian was born the second of nine children to Anton and Theresa (Stemig) Pieper. He appreciated the lifelong lessons he learned on the farm. He was a strong, hardworking man, dedicated and faithful to God and his family. First attending Marystown Catholic School, Julian later graduated from Jordan High School. He then proudly served his country during World War II, for over three years, in the United States Navy. Julian was stationed in the South PaciďŹ c on the USS Saratoga and later in Hawaii. But it was what happened at a wedding dance that enriched his life forever. Julian met an amazing young woman, named Geraldine Marie Pauly. They declared their love for each other on September 21, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jordan. They were utterly devoted to each other, and this was never more evident than when Geraldine had her stroke in 2009. Their absolute and unwavering love of each other was never ashy or dramatic, but always certain and deep. Julian and Geraldine purchased a farm southeast of Jordan, where they raised 11 children. Julian educated his children on the craft of taking something old and making it new. He taught them the skills and knowledge of farming, woodworking, puzzle solving, and so very many other life lessons. In 1994, Julian and Geraldine retired and sold the farm

to their son, Frank. They purchased a home in Belle Plaine, but you still could ďŹ nd them gravitating back to the farm and lending a helping hand. Julian loved competing and loved to win. From his early years on, he was a great horseshoe thrower, a creative woodworker, and a top notch Sheephead and 500 player. In his spare time, Julian loved to ride his bike and that, too, brought him many hours of enjoyment after leaving the farm. Through the years, Julian’s family was given the gift of his quiet strength, genuine love, and a gentle and faith-ďŹ lled heart. He will be forever missed and loved by his devoted children, Ray (Bridget) Pieper, Mike (Roxanne) Pieper, Mary (Tom) Koskovich, Theresa (Elmer) Hartmann, Tony (Terry) Pieper, Kathy (Cal) Meyer, Julie (Jim) Dubbe, Jean Rief, Frank (Sue) Pieper, Carol (Jim) Croal; daughter-in-law, Deb Pieper; 52 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; brother, Clem Pieper; sisters, Loretta Hoffman, Mary (Marv) Gregory; sister-in-law, Ethel Pieper; sisters-in-law and brothers-inlaw, Marietta Vohnoutka, Arlene (Reuben) Geislinger, Alcuin (MaryAnn) Pauly, Myron (Deb) Pauly and Julian (Karen) Pauly; many other relatives and friends. There to welcome Julian home is wife, Geraldine; son, Ron Pieper; grandchildren, Joseph Hartmann, Amanda Rief; greatgrandson, Asher Rodgers; parents, Anton and Theresa; brothers, Roman (Helen) Pieper, Joseph (Marcella) Pieper, Albert Pieper, Elmer Pieper, Leonard (Phyllis) Pieper; sister-in-law, Sally Pieper; and brothers-inlaw, Beatus Hoffman, George Vohnoutka, Roland Pauly and Alan Pauly. Julian’s pallbearers were his grandchildren, Tim Pieper, Deanne Fogarty, Jeff Koskovich, Sara Schrempp, Jason Meyer, Michael Pieper, Jenna Rief and Nick Croal. Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home and Cremation, Jordan Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Farmers’ Market Corner The Belle Plaine Farmers’ Market 2017 runs Wednesdays, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. (rain or shine) through Oct. 11 at Court Square Park, 410 Cedar Street N. It is a somber week as the Belle Plaine Farmers’ Market community mourns the loss of John Walerius, the beloved husband of one of our primary vendors, Jan Walerius. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family. The market will continue according to schedule this week. As always, our local vendors will be on-site Wednesday (July 5) with the incredible items our routine vendors provide at the market. We are currently offering locally produced maple syrup and honey, while supplies are available. Food trucks will be on-site, so why not bring the family down for a little shopping and a bite to eat. What a great time to socialize with growers and vendors as well as with your fellow community members. We will have a U of M Extension Master Gardner on-site this week for all of your gardening and botanical questions. Some of the items you can expect to find at the market include farm fresh eggs, jams & jellies, and baked goods. Handmade crafts, jewelry, rugs and towels have also been popular items. Vendors are welcome to sell homemade or homegrown items at the farmers’ market. New vendors are always welcome. The weekly vendor rate is $5. For more information, contact Laurie Devine, 952-454-1038. The Belle Plaine Historical Society sponsors the 2017 Belle Plaine Farmers’ Market.

Bar-B-Q Days Medallion Hunt Enters Second Week

The first clue for the 2017 Bar-B-Q Days Medallion Hunt is published below. Additional clues, if necessary, will be published in the July 12 issue of the Herald. The same rules apply as last year. The search area includes

all of the Belle Plaine city limits. A map of the city limits can be found online. The medallion is located on public property and is not more than 6 feet off the ground. It is not on the Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom historical house property

or inside Tiger Park baseball field. Those searching on foot are encouraged to use the tunnel to cross Highway 169. The medallion is about 2 inches in diameter and has "Belle Plaine Bar-B-Q Days" inscribed on it. The prize for finding it is $100 in Belle Plaine Bucks. If you find it, call Don Meger, 952-454-6492. Jake Hartman and his father, “JoJo” Hartman, solved the 2016 Bar-B-Q Days Medallion mystery. They found it beneath an orange traffic cone on top of a culvert along Enterprise Drive near Coborn’s. Jake, 20, was the one who actually uncovered the coin but had help from his dad during the search process.

Clue 2

Welcome one and all to Bar-B-Que Days LIX, Carnival rides and teddy bears, it is rain or shine. LeBron made the play in game seven last year, A sprint to the tape, let’s get it in gear. Put me up for auction, I’ll bring a good price, I’m the captain of my soul, they paved paradise. Rock‘em Sock‘em Robots, oh what if you lose, Check out the helicopter or play some horseshoes.

Discount Ride Tickets on Sale

I’m just like my father, he is so proud, A towering shot, the roars from the crowd.

Advanced carnival ride tickets for Bar-B-Q Days are now on sale at a number of locations. Bar-B-Q Days will take place July 15-17. You can get your tickets at a discounted price until noon on July 15 at the following locations: – Belle Plaine Festivals and Events/Chamber office – Borough Bowl – Cenex Convenience Store – Coborn’s Grocery Store – Cornerstone State Bank – Dawn’s Salon – Genesis Town & Country – Sparetime Tavern – State Bank of Belle Plaine A strip of 10 tickets purchased in advance costs $17. After the noon deadline on July 17, the cost will be $2.50 per ticket throughout the weekend. Each ticket is good for one ride for any age.

I face this problem, when I’m not inspired. What shall I write, I need to be wired. Six stations to choose from, it’s just what I’ve heard, From the Dixie side, I’m out near the third. Money owns this town, may the force be with you, Who is this Waldo Gronski? No need to misconstrue. I’m to the right of the luxury tax, I hope you filed, H and R should help a bit, feeling kind of exiled. Working all night and if you should tire, This one could go down to the wire.

Clue 1

Threes and eights to all of you, the time is drawing near, I must avoid the greenback, the one that I fear. Razzle-Dazzle should help you find the ‘R’ with the star, Hocus-pocus, let’s stay focused, oh how bizarre! The Borough Riders and all of their toys, The bell of the ball, boys will be boys. I’m surrounded by streets, the rockets red glare, Bring on the shadow play, enter my lair. Water fights and IV play and the best parade around, Don’t forget the Bull Run, go run all over town. Enter the race and get on your mark, This life of Riley won’t keep us apart. Happiness is a choice, we’re just having a ball, All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall. Shock and awe, can you feel the surge, You must be charged, I’m on the verge. One Dino Chalmers will handle your audition, Flutter the dovecotes, you have my permission. Dare to be remarkable in this year of the rooster, Doll yourself up, grab a cup, have yourself a brewster.

Donations to Food Shelf Accepted at Parade

The Belle Plaine Food Shelf will be accepting donations of food items at the Bar-B-Q Days Parade on July 16. Just bring the items to your viewing spot and volunteers will be by to collect them.

Benefit. See ya there. The Marvin and Mary Jakes Fundraiser at the Next Chapter Winery was a good time Friday evening. Lots of fine food, folks, items to bid on, and not many mosquitoes. So nice visiting with June, Joanne and Rich Vlasak again. Their “Moore” roots grew deep under our St. Thomas Tree, their Mom being Rita Moore. Bob Janovsky was also at the Jakes Fundraiser. Long time friends of this writer, Bob and his lovely wife Liz, are the 2017 Grand Marshals for Kolacky Days this year. Montgomery couldn’t have picked anybody better than Bob and Liz. Congratulations to you both. Bob frequented the Eyeball here when it was open. Timothy and Alice Halloran Burns Reunion will be hosted by Mary Grace O’Brien’s family this year on August 13 at the Ney Center near Henderson. Reminder: St. Thomas Ladies Luncheon, Tuesday July 11 at 11:30 a.m. at The Fish Tale in New Prague. My appreciation to the folks who reminded me, once again of my birthday, with a greeting, a grin, a hug, a smile... or a song.

of North Meridian and East Church streets in rented space across the street using old residential refrigerator/freezers. “It was crazy. They were out of people’s garages. We had about five of them lined up,” Ollhoff said. In the early years, the group relied on advice from the organizers of Jordan’s food shelf. They helped the local group avoid the pitfalls of inexperience. Since then, a small army of volunteers has proved invaluable. They work consistent shifts (Wednesdays, 5 to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon). Volunteers even grow produce at a local community garden. In 2012, the food shelf’s board of directors decided to take the plunge and purchase a building across the street. The former movie rental store was available for just under $39,900. Owning a building saved the food shelf money over rental, money the board was able to put into helping a growing number of clients. A big donation from the Belle Plaine Rotary Club helped the food shelf buy new industrial freezers it needed to preserve food longer. The food shelf started a backpack program in 2013 to help students. The program anony-

mously provides over 400 students a week with food. The program served almost 100 elementary school students in its first year before expanding to include younger elementary students. The program was one of the reasons the Belle Plaine Food Shelf was awarded Belle Plaine School District’s Friend of Education Award in 2015.

B.P.’s Benevolence

A generous community has served the growing number of clients the food shelf serves. The major donors of food include Coborn’s, Kwik Trip, Emma Krumbee’s, West Main Donut (Heng’s Bakery), Second Harvest Food Bank, Belle Plaine churches and group food drives. Food drives by churches, schools, local clubs and organizations raised over 13½ tons of food. Overall, the food shelf took in over 60 tons of food in 2015. It gave out over 54 tons in 2015, over 9½ tons per month that year. Monetary donations to the food shelf were not listed on the annual report. “I can’t say enough about the generosity of this community. This community is so generous,” Ollhoff said. “It’s just unbelievable.”

Legion Baseball

Wins at S.E. Advances Tigers to 5-1 After sweeping a doubleheader from Sibley East, the Belle Plaine American Legion team is preparing for a showdown with rival Le Sueur-Henderson as Belle Plaine aims to keep its momentum heading into postseason play. Last Wednesday (June 28), the Tigers traveled to Arlington and thumped Sibley East. Belle Plaine won the first game, 35-6. The Tigers finished off the sweep with a 7-3 win. The

victory advanced Belle Plaine’s record to 5-1. Jake Mercado pitched the four innings of the first game before it was mercifully ended. Jared Miller pitched the second game. In the second game, with the score tied 3-3, the Tigers scored four times to win the game. Brody Curtiss had a key twoRBI base hit in the rally. Thursday (July 6, 6 p.m.), the Tigers host a doubleheader

against Le Sueur-Henderson at Tiger Park. Belle Plaine will travel to face St. Peter in the regular-season finale Monday July 10, 6 p.m. The Tigers faced Le Sueur-Henderson and St. Peter in the high school season’s sectional playoff last month. Post season play for the Legion team begins July 14. Belle Plaine’s opponent, the site and time of the game have yet to be determined.

Belle Plaine catcher Pat Schultz fielded a swinging bunt in front of home plate during the fourth inning of the Tigers’ 6-3 win over Le Sueur Friday night at Tiger Park.

Town Team Baseball

B.P. Wins Third in a Row, Nears .500

by Brett Kruschke In case fans of Belle Plaine’s town baseball team haven’t noticed – and judging by the attendance, they haven’t – the Tigers have managed to win a game here and there, and are actually threatening to climb to the .500 mark. The Sons of Chatfield won a pair of 6-3 contests last week against Hamburg and Le Sueur – their third and fourth triumphs in the past five outings. The wins improve the team’s record to 8-9 overall, 3-4 in River Valley League play. Teenage Tigers pondered their American citizenship over the weekend and will return to action tonight (Wednesday, July 5), when the Pine City Pirates visit Tiger Park for a 7:30 p.m. affair. The Tigers will be home again Friday, with the Gaylord Islanders in town at 7:30 p.m. for Pulled Pork Sandwich Night. Team Tigertown will close out a busy week with a 6 p.m. affair Sunday (July 9) at first-place St. Peter (7-1 RVL Central). Last season ended at St. Peter with a 4-3 loss, marking just the second time in the last 10 seasons the Tigers didn’t qualify for the state tournament. Tigers 6, Hamburg 3 (7 inn.) Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey ended a 146-year run this spring as the preeminent American circus. Thursday’s (June 29) exhibition with Hamburg provided assurance bigtop entertainment in America is far from over. The Tigers used a pair of firstinning doubles by brothers Pat and Matt Schultz to grab a 2-0 lead. While Tigers’ pitcher Joe Pomije escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first, he was touched for two runs in the third before departing after 4½ innings on the wrong end of a 3-2 score. Mike Schultz’s marauders finally got the bats going again in the fifth, scoring four times while batting around. The big blow was a three-run, laser shot home run from Aiden Ladd, which ended up making a winner of his fake-mustachioed brother, Carsen. The younger Ladd brother notched his first career town team win with three innings of one-run ball. In the top of the sixth inning – as if mustache night and Little League Night joining forces weren’t enough – three light towers suddenly lost power. After the managers, umpire and

Tigers Send Three Players to RVL-DRS All-Star Game

Saturday (July 8) will be the 11th annual RVL – DakotaRice-Scott (DRS) All-Star Game, scheduled for 2 p.m. in Elko New Market. At 1:15 p.m., a home run contest will be held between the rival leagues. Full rosters can be found at rvl. leagues.mnbaseball.org along with pre-game details. Belle Plaine will have three representatives – all first-time all-stars and all 19-year-olds – catcher Aiden Ladd, outfielder Luke Narveson and pitcher Mitchel Stier. Ladd, who also sees time on the left side of the infield, is in his third season with the Tigers. He is second on the team (among qualified hitters) in batting average (.411) and onbase percentage (.459). Ladd leads the Tigers in slugging percentage (.554), runs (16), hits (23), RBI (11), and stolen bases (nine), and has two of the team’s five home runs. Ladd has two family members on this year’s team in father Jason, an assistant coach, and younger

brother Carsen, who’s hitting .423 in 26 at-bats. After splitting the right and center fielder with a long fly ball, Nathan Herman slid into third Narveson, the Tigers’ lead-off hitter, has flourished as the cen- base ahead of the throw in the home half of the fourth inning against Le Sueur Friday. terfield replacement for multitime all-star Travis Latzke, who hung up his spikes this year after nine seasons. In his second season, Narveson leads the locals in batting average (.417), onbase percentage (.472), doubles (three), and stolen bases (nine), while trailing only Aiden Ladd in slugging percentage (.542). Southwest State’s lefty quarterback even made a mound appearance this year, recording two outs via strikeout. Stier, in his sophomore campaign, has emerged as the ace of Belle Plaine’s young pitching staff. In 36.1 innings, he has yielded 33 hits and struck out 36 while sporting a 1.49 ERA – almost four runs better than his closest teammate. The righthander credits a cut fastball for the bulk of his mound success. While Stier has struggled with the bat, he is tied for the team lead with 11 RBI.

other interested parties conferred, it was decided to play on. Frankly, even with half the lights, it seemed no worse than a poorly-lit Wrigley Field. With mosquitoes coming on like gangbusters and some sprinkles sending fans to the grandstand, it was almost like a prayer answered when the public address announcer and scoreboard operator were suddenly informed the game would end after seven innings. Three outs later, Jonathan Schmidt pocketed a save with a 1-2-3 inning in his town team debut, and all of the night’s madness came to an abrupt end.

Le Sueur grabbed an unearned run off Stier in the third, but it was the only blemish he yielded in seven innings of work. The Tigers scored once in the third and twice in the fourth – highlighted by a Nathan Herman triple – to take a 3-1 lead through six-plus innings. In the fifth inning, Tyler O’Brien debuted for Belle Plaine as a pinch runner, but he had the quickest “Welcome to Tigertown” moment in recent memory, as the speedster was erased by a perfect throw on a stolen base attempt. Belle Plaine batted around for the second straight night when they scored three times on five seventh-inning singles. Herman threw the final two frames, and eight Tigers recorded a hit on the night – led by two apiece for Pat Schultz and Narveson.

Fair (continued from page 1) awaited new building began earlier this spring. It will serve women, men and families and also have private space for nursing mothers, Hesse said. He’ll work with a group of part-time seasonal workers preparing the fairgrounds. About 45 acres of the fairgrounds are dedicated to activities and events, with the remainder used for parking. “Right now we’re in pretty good shape, Hesse said. Hesse knows the fairgrounds well. His grandfather, Peter Hesse, sold the land to the fair board in 1973. The sale allowed the fair board to move the county fair from its location in Jordan to the 190th Street location. Dave Latzke, the fair board’s vice president, said the decision not to replace Pint with a single person was the product of the fair board’s desire to take advantage of the skills Kucera and Hesse offered. Having two people leading the preparation of the fair and fairgrounds also relieves the stress on staff. “Rhonda is a very detailoriented person, Latzke said. “Tom can fix anything that needs it. So far, things are working very well. They’re handling everything as well as before.

Jordan Hotel Plans ‘Expire’ While the City of Jordan wants to see a hotel built in town, its patience with Terry Eid and his proposal to build one just off the intersection of Highway 169 has surpassed a breaking point. Eid and his company, Terry Eid Construction, has not completed the purchase agreement for the land adjacent to the current Clancy’s Bar & Grill. He had indicated the agreement would be ready for a council meeting last week. Eid recently told the city he’d have the needed agreement by the end of July, the Jordan Independent recently reported.
