hair styling

who’s that girl

guru

Some people bake cakes, some write poems. Abby Smith found her niche in playing with her hair - and creating the most amazing styles with them. And she has also released her first CD and is working on her second book... How did your passion for hair styling appear? Shortly after having my son I realized I needed a hobby. I am a stay at home mom and if you’ve ever had a baby you know that they sleep all the time! I was stuck in a ponytail rut and decided I was going to learn some new hairstyles. After watching a million youtube videos and practicing all the different braids on myself I decided to launch my 30 do’s in 30 days segment on my blog. I’m a self-taught stylist and if I can do it - so can you. It isn’t easy to make a complicated hairstyling on your own head, is it? How do you manage it without aching hands? It really is all about practicing. There is a satisfaction that comes when you finally achieve something that was hard or that you couldn’t do before. Eventually your arms won’t ache and you’ll get the hang of all the braids. I like to keep a mirror in front and behind me so that I can see what my fingers are doing, but it’ll just all become a second nature to you if you practice enough. Where do you get ideas for a new hairstyling? I’m inspired by celebrities and believe it or not, when I take the kids to my husband’s school I love looking at how the college girls are dressing up their hair. Inspiration is in everything around you. A popular style of mine is the Celtic knot inspired by a simple headband tied into a Celtic knot. It’s all around! Provo, USA

twistmepretty.com

5

What is your favorite hairstyling - and which one in the most popular among your fans? I’m in love with the Alternative Braid and the Braided Crown. They are so simple yet they look fabulous and intricate. Definite favorites. You also have your hairstyle handbook - how did it come to life? What was the most difficult while publishing it yourself? It was inspired by the 30 do’s in 30 days segment I did. I wanted to be able to keep the styles in my bathroom so that I could remember what I had done on those low inspiration days. It was really difficult to self-publish when I knew zero about publishing! It taught me so much though and now I actually teach classes on how to be successful at self-publishing! If you want something bad enough, you can achieve it. Everything good comes from hard work.

“gorgeous hair is the BEST revenge”

“I love inspiring women

Is blogging helping you grow professionally and if, in what ways? Blogging has been a great outlet for me to express my creativity. It’s been a wonderful source of income for my family, especially with my husband being a full time student. I can’t believe how far it has come and I am so blessed to have it! My blog has given me the opportunity to learn about beauty and fashion, write for babble, learn how to model, learn photography, all about computers and self-publishing. Blogging really has forced me to educate myself and learn about new things every day.

to believe in themselves and if I can give them that extra confidence they need to feel that much more beautiful, then I’ve done my job!”

What are your next plans? What do you plan to achieve/finish by the end of this year? My album was released at the end of October. I was working on it for a year and a half so that is what I have been looking forward to most. The New Braiding Handbook will be in bookstores in May of 2014. Hours and hours have gone into it so I’ll be happy when it’s out for people to learn and grow from! I’m excited for my husband Brian to finally have a job and to be finished with school. I’m just happy to have my readers and my family. Excited to start a new year, who knows what’s in store!

You are already working on your second book, this time a professional one, covered by a whole team of people working on it. Yes, it’s so exciting! It’s going to be similar in a way, there will be step by step pictures, but the styles are all new and a quality is going to be fabulous. I can’t even tell you how amazing this book is going to be! You have also started to coach women who want to lose some weight. Tell us something about it. After struggling to lose weight after my second baby I was really discouraged. I had worked so hard for an entire year, eating right and exercising and I was still 20 pounds to my goal. So when I saw my friend’s success with the program I now coach for I decided to give it a try. After losing 20 pounds in 6 weeks I decided to share the program with everyone because it changed my life so much. You also sing, very beautifully! Have you been doing it professionally? Yes, a lot of people don’t know that I actually sing. It’s the one thing I feel was a God given talent! For 15 years I was professionally trained and sung throughout the highschool and college. I decided to give my music career up to get married and have children, the best decision ever. I actually am debuting a religious album. It’s called Believer and 7 out of the 12 songs are originals. It’s been fun writing and recording this past year. Something I’ve always been passionate about. Excited to share my music with everyone!

The timeless beauty products we turn to time and time again

Clarins Eau Dynamisante When a medical student Jacques Courtin-Clarins came up with an idea of a fragrance and a body treatment in one, he was on to a winner. Today the red bottle, identical to the one created in 1987, is one of the most popular wellness (and unisex) scents combining the fresh aroma with caring and aromatherapy effects, and one is sold every five minutes.

Chanel No.5 Coco Chanel, with the help of chemist Ernest Beaux, came up with this new perfume in 1921. The scent, which was a mix of jasmine, rose, sandalwood and vanilla, has been loved by women ever since. Famously, Marilyn Monroe when asked what she wore to bed, answered provocatively that it was 5 drops of her favorite perfume, Chanel No.5!

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

9

Maybel William and her brother Noel came up with an invention of mascara after she singed her eyelashes in 1917. Fifty four years later, Maybelline (named after Maybel) came up with its Great Lash Mascara. With its iconic green and pink packaging, this mascara is known all over the world, and one is sold every 1.7 seconds!

“there is no cosmetic for BEAUTY like happiness”

Elnett Hairspray This legend was born in 1960! Since it first came on the scene it has been used by hairdressers on a global scale. Some of the world’s leading ladies have advertised the spray, most recently Cheryl Cole. It seems whatever way we want our hair to sit, women can rely on Elnett, just as they have been doing for over 50 years!

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Elizabeth had such faith in her miracle cream that she used it to soothe the bruises on her thoroughbred horses; and it worked! It also promises to protect, exfoliate and moisturize the skin. No wonder that this product has been given a cult status amongst models and make-up artists over the world, despite being over 70 years old!

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer This miracle product was created by the U.S. Vogue editor Carol Phillips, Evelyn Lauder and dermatologist Norman Orentreich in 1968. They wanted to create a product, that if used properly, could give a woman good skin. The fact that it is still going strong suggests that they were successful.

Nivea Cream A famous cream in a blue tin has been used by women for over 100 years. It has a multitude of uses in moisturizing the body, the face, hair and even as a concealer for the under eye bags! In Latin Nivea means ‘snow white’ and we predict women will be using and loving this snow white cream for decades to come!

I always love a good sweater or knit for a casual look. This one from Kenzo is one of my faves. For a formal look I prefer suit above a dress. I loved YSL suit with the pussybow and decided to recreate it!

I love this dress. The oversized fit, black and white color and a very trendy animal print are great for this season!

When I have no clue what to wear I almost always opt for all black look with sneakers and a good coat. This bold red coat is perfect for a day when my confidence level is higher than normal, as people always notice me when I wear this amazing coat. 18

pro tips

foundation

the perfect Tips and tricks for your flawless looks

How to define the right shade of foundation? The best one should be invisible after application on your cheeks and chin area. Before applying the foundation, be sure to use your day moisturizer and let it sink in properly. Afterwards, if your makeup has to last through a late night, use primer that minimizes pores and mattifies your face.

When shopping for a new foundation do not forget to take a small mirror with you so that you could test the color on the cheeks and check it out in front of the store in a daylight. Remember: shades that look good under an artificial light look completely different in a daylight.

{

If you use a liquid foundation, shake it well before use. Color pigments could settle on the bottom of the product and the result would not be perfect.

}

If you want just a little coverage use your fingers, for more coverage, use a sponge or a brush. You don’t have to use foundation on the whole face - for everyday, dab it only where you need it to hide pimples, or camouflage some redness.

Always use a concealer after foundation to achieve a more flawless finish. It should be one shade lighter, applied with a small brush. Avoid layering too much concealer though as it may look too obvious.

click 2buy 35

“makeup is ART, beauty is passion”

For a perfect result, blend a liquid or solid foundation by fingers first. The temperature of your fingers warms up the texture and it is better absorbed into the skin then.

Don’t use the same product all year round. Skin color changes with the seasons, so your foundation shade should change, too. Texture matters. Liquids are best for a dry skin, cream foundations are for a normal skin and solid compacts/ powders serve best the oily skin as they create a matte appearance.

{

}

If you feel that a regular foundation looks like a mask on you, try tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead. It will even your skin without the heavy feel.

For a radiant look, use two shades of foundation. First, apply a natural shade that corresponds with the color of your neck, across the face as usual. Then apply a slightly darker shade on your nose, cheeks, chin and forehead, so that the darker colors create an invisible cover. This technique highlights and revives the natural color of your face and makes it look perfect.

What is a Mineral Makeup? Mineral makeup is made from ground-up rocks (mainly mica) and it offers a medium to heavy coverage. It can be applied with a large powder brush and is the ideal choice for sensitive skin as it contains no additives and no synthetic preservatives. The powder doesn’t sit in fine lines and is non-comedogenic.

OON

LILITH M

lilithmoon.com

How do you care for your skin? Cleaning and moisturizing my skin twice a day is the most important part of my beauty routine - it’s really essential to keep my sensitive rather oily skin in a good condition. When it comes to makeup, I am totally addicted to my eyeliner. I hardly ever wear foundation and usually go for natural colors of eye shadows, but no eye makeup is ever complete for me without my liner. Filled in eyebrows and glossy lips are finishing touches to my makeup that usually takes me 5 to 10 minutes. Any special hair care? I deep condition my hair every time I wash it with Full Shimmer mask from Shu Uemura, always let it dry naturally and do not style it with heat other than for special occasions. How much do you spend on cosmetics? I think I’m a reasonable spender. Although I have to admit that I spend more money on cosmetics than on clothes. I’m very picky with clothes and find it really difficult to find outfits that I like (going shopping is like a job for me), while I just cannot resist pretty eye shadows and lip glosses. What’s your best beauty discovery? That’s by far my Glam Time hair extensions! My hair is way too thin to grow it long, so I keep it just past my shoulders and use clip-in extensions for that extra length and volume that I need for my braids, buns and half updos.

“beauty isn’t makeup”

What can we find in your makeup bag? I’m afraid my makeup wouldn’t fit in any bag other than a suitcase, so I store it in a chest of drawers. When I travel, I usually bring along my Dior BB Cream, Dior Nude compact powder, some blush, 2 or 3 eyeshadow palettes, L’Oréal SuperLiner, mascara and 4-5 lipsticks. On a daily basis I carry along only one lipstick and a compact powder that mainly serves me as a mirror. Do you remember your first beauty product? I had to ask my mother to remind me! Apparently it was a transparent lip gloss she got me when I was 13.

click & shop

What is your signature scent? Miracle from Lancôme. Nails – nude, bright or au naturel? Any of the above, depending on my mood and outfit. Any beauty indulgences you try and make time for? These days I’ve been experimenting with different natural oils renowned to improve hair strength, shine and bodyas well as to stop hair loss. I try to apply them 3 times a week for 45 minutes. It takes months to see results, so I’m trying to be patient! What’s the best beauty trick you’ve ever been shown? Dusting some loose powder under your eyes prior to applying the eyeshadows allows you to easily brush off any annoying fallout afterwards. My beauty philosophy is… We cannot choose our looks at birth, but we can choose our style and have fun with our hair and makeup to express our personality, the way we feel inside, or the way we want to be seen. Feeling pretty is very important for one’s self esteem and I hope that my tutorials help spreading beauty and happiness. But outer beauty is nothing without inner beauty. Good looks can attract people’s attention, but it’s one’s personality that matters in a long term. That’s why I find it very important to find time for self-analysis and selfimprovement. What I value most in people and try to cultivate in myself is a sense of humor, kindness and compassion. Are there any products you are dying to try? I think I already have everything I need, I just wish there would be a hair conditioner that could magically undo all hair damage and at once add body and volume to a naturally thin hair like my own.

our looks at birth, but we can choose our style and have fun expressing our personality.”

dream job

yogateacher

Being able to do what you like and get paid for it is a dream of many people. Alicia Pan, who lives in Singapore is a living proof it is possible. She teaches yoga, manages her own yoga studio and she still has some time for her other passion - singing. What’s her secret? How long are you a yoga teacher and how did you get to do this? I have been teaching for 4 years. I chanced upon yoga in 2006 and decided shortly after to complete my Teacher Training.

What was your biggest challenge when starting out your own yoga studio? As with any other businesses, there is always a fear of failing. Getting over that fear and actually getting down to starting it up was the biggest challenge.

What skills must one have to become a yoga instructor? I think first all you must have the ability to speak comfor-tably in front of an ‘audience’. Education comes after, there are lots of different types of teacher trainings available, but the textbook education alone does not guarantee a good teacher.

What other areas do you need to understand and work with to make your career successful? As a yoga teacher you will need to understand the fundamentals of anatomy. There will be lots of people coming in with medical conditions and you’ll have to be able to modify what you teach to, to a certain extend. What does your typical day look like? I am a singer as well, so I perform regularly apart from running the studio and teaching classes on a day to day basis. How many hours a day do you dedicate to yoga? Do you actually have time for yoga when you are the boss managing the whole business? I am a fairly active person and dedicate about 15-18 hours a week teaching classes. I do interval trainings and mixed martial arts when I am not teaching and practicing yoga. I like keeping busy, even if it means little time to rest. So yes, I find that while I sometimes feel tired, I still do have time for my own practice or other activities while managing my business. It can be challenging though.

“you always have a CHOICE”

How many employees do you have at the moment and what is the most important while managing own employees? I currently have 12 teachers and 5 front desk staff. The most important thing to take note of is to be able to be firm enough in making decisions and keeping employees happy at the same time. What is the top that ‘yoga professional’ can achieve? Or what is it for you, the absolute career top? Opening your own studio, which I have done already. What do you like the most about yoga? To be honest, while there are many aspects to yoga, the physical aspect benefits me the most. Are there any common myths about yoga? It is hard to point in one general direction as there are SO many different schools of yoga, while a certain kind of yoga is great for stretching out stiff muscles, another type of yoga is great for cardio. There is also Hot Yoga, in which many people have seen weight changes after starting to practice. What would you recommend to people who never tried yoga before? Don’t listen to what others say about yoga, give it a shot. Everyone benefits differently from it. Have some patience and give it time. It takes some time and consistency to notice changes in your body. If you are patient enough you will start to feel it and make it a part of your life.

“ Getting over

the fear of failing and actually getting down to starting it up was the biggest challenge for me when starting up.”

HOW TO switch to a

good food

Making small, gradual changes to your eating habits can have a big impact on becoming a more nutritious you.

Plan your meals

Aside from the money-saving benefits of planning your meals ahead of time, having a list in hand during your trip to the grocery store will reduce the temptation of buying that box of powdered donuts or random bags of processed food. As a result, your pantry will be filled with food that has been well thought out for specific meals, reducing the likelihood of having chips for dinner.

Mix up your grains

Always eat breakfast

It’s easy to get in the habit of waking up too late to eat or drink your breakfast (yes, you, coffee addicts!). Eggs, a banana, oatmeal, or yogurt are quick, yet nutritious options to jump start your metabolism each morning.

If you aren’t sure about the idea of switching to whole grains like brown rice or whole wheat pasta, try mixing what you normally eat with a small amount of whole grain. You can then gradually increase the amount of whole grain until you can’t tell the difference!

Drink more water

Snack smart

Trade packaged cookies and crackers for more nutritious options that will better curb your appetite. Nuts with dried berries, air-popped popcorn, yogurt, non-fat chocolate milk, fruits, and veggies are great snack choices. If you are unsure about snacking on raw veggies, try adding low calorie ranch or hummus for more flavor.

Soft drinks are full of hidden calories - save your calories for food! Cutting out just one soft drink per day can make a huge difference! If you can’t live without your morning latte or your lunchtime caffeine pick-me-up, choose to drink water every evening with your dinner. Try adding lemons or limes to make water more flavorful.

Moderation is everything

Deprivation can lead to overeating. Allow yourself to have dessert on Friday nights. Have one glass of red wine on Saturday night. Eating clean during the week and allowing yourself an indulgence every now and then at the weekend is a great plan to create a healthy eating habit you can stick to.

for portion control 1.

Eat from a smaller plate, so less looks like more on your plate.

2.

Eat packaged sweets (such as M&M’s) from a pre-portioned ¼ cup, not the package. You’re more likely to stop when your bowl is empty, instead of mindlessly eating the whole package.

Get inspired

Meal variety is crucial to continuing to make healthy choices. Pinterest is a great source for endless recipes and new spins on your tried and true favorites.

3.

Don’t skip meals. If you’re starving after having skipped a meal, you’re more likely to eat a larger portion.

Welcome

to my home

Ann Ueno is a globetrotter. She lives for anything Italian, loves interior design and parties (both hosting&attending), and in her eclectic abode everybody feels welcome. Let’s have a look!

“home is a PLACE where all are welcome”

My favorite room is our great room. It’s a combination of our living and what’s more important, where we eat. And where we entertain. I absolutely adore having people around our rustic wood dining table, feeding them, drinking wine, sharing stories and enjoy each other’s company! My style is modern vintage. I love combining new pieces with restored ones. A high end fabric with a flea market chair. Personalization and personality are important to turn a house into home. By personalization, I mean pictures, unique pieces that tell a story, a home that is custom and doesn’t look exactly like a catalog picture. By personality, I mean the people who live in the house. My design tips for a tight budget are gallery walls. Mine are made up of very inexpensive street art pieces from our travels. Using your own photography, blowing it up and framing is yet another great, inexpensive design project. For me, there are certain pieces in a home, mainly furniture that you may want to invest in (i.e. a sofa, dining table). Everything else I say go to Home Goods, scour Flea Markets, Ebay and don’t forget to grab some of your grandparents’ items!

my life in

far far away

SPAIN

For Rachel Wright living abroad was an opportunity not to be missed. Even with two kids, no language knowledge and no income. How does she cope with this adventurous challenge? Within 6 months of being married, Brandon and I had an amazing experience living in Belgium for an internship. We knew then that we wanted to give our future children the opportunity to live abroad as well. Five years and two children later we both had some ambitions for our future. Brandon dreamed of going back to school to earn his Masters and we both felt it was time to move abroad again. So we took a leap of faith, combined the two ambitions and did it. It was a scary process for sure. Moving to Spain with two kids and no income, while Brandon went to school. Even writing it sounds crazy but it has been incredible! We’ve decided on Spain for a few reasons: 1. Brandon speaks Spanish and it would be a great place for him to practice and 'keep up' his second language. 2. We found a great school here 3. Our children (& I) would have the opportunity to pick up a second language, one that would be very useful back home in the United States.

The meal schedule has been the biggest surprise for us. Think of the daily schedule in the States and move it forward by two hours. For example, lunch is served from 2-4pm, and dinner doesn’t start until 8 or 9pm. Everything is later. Bedtime is midnight and the start of the day isn’t until 10am. The biggest obstacle when moving here was not being able to communicate. Although I have picked up some Spanish the majority of people speak Catalan first and then Castilian (Spanish) second. The biggest myth is that bull fighting is popular. In our region it is actually banned and it seems that more and more Spaniards are questioning the ethics of the activity. Also, I have yet to met a Spaniard that has actually been to a bull fight. I’m starting to get an impression that it currently is a solely tourist attraction. My funniest experience with the locals was when being at home alone with an internet installation guy that only spoke Spanish. We had a lovely 5 hour game of charades. Seriously, we communicated through hand signals and it took 5 full hours to install our internet. Apparently, I need to practice my charades skills! As of right now, I feel like I have a great mix of friends. Luckily for us, we knew some people that lived in Barcelona prior to coming here and they introduced us to some really wonderful people. It is quite interesting though, how we foreigners seem to find each other. We hear each other speaking something other than Spanish to our kids and have an instant connection.

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list”

3 THINGS

I WISH I KNEW BEFORE MOVING HERE 1. Siesta time is serious business. Many places close from 2-5pm daily so that people can eat their large lunches and get some R&R. I had no clue that everything shut down during that time and it would’ve been helpful to know when we were walking around town during those hours trying to get our utilities set up. The food in Catalonia (this region of Spain) is delicious! Most restaurants have ‘pa amb tomaquet’ for a starter, which is a toast with fresh squeezed tomato sauce, garlic and olive oil. Being on the coast we eata lot of seafood. Also typical of the region is iberico ham and paella. I have yet to try a Spanish dish I didn’t enjoy!

2. More about the language conflict here in Catalonia. During Franco’s rule (1939-1975) the only language to be used by government and in public was Spanish. After his death the Catalonian people did everything they could to keep their language and culture. Today, schools are taught in Catalan not Spanish. There are many people that disagree with this, saying that although Catalan is the language of their Fathers, the emphasis should be put on Spanish, not Catalan. The discussion gets quite passionate at times.

Right now we have only planned to be here for a year and a half, which is when my husband’s program ends. We are open to staying, open to returning to the US and open to trying somewhere new. We don’t know what the future holds for us. Sometimes the unknown is scary and other times it’s beautiful.

3. Local rules about cheek kissing. These are some rules I picked up in our region. A. When facing someone, go to your left first (your right cheeks touch first). This is important; I shouldn’t have to explain why. B. You usually only kiss acquaintances, unless you are being introduced to someone by an acquaintance. C. Your lips are only there to make a kissing sound, your cheeks are the only parts that are touching.

I miss my family, of course but also just going to one store to buy everything on my list. It’s a simple thing that I took for granted. I love Spain and on my return back to America, I’ll take it all! The history, the food, some traditions, and some wonderful people we have met so far.

what to see, try, enjoy in Barcelona Sagrada Familia — a breathtaking basilica that was designed by Catalonia’s beloved architect, Gaudi. Although it is a work in progress (set to be completed in 2026), this perfect mixture between gothic and art nouveau is a real jaw dropper for sure. Barri Gotic — walk the stone streets of the old town of Barcelona and find new hidden gems around every corner: an old cathedral, Roman ruins, detailed water fountains. Chances are you will take thousands of pictures - so much history and beauty there! Montserrat — a mountain just outside of Barcelona that holds a Benedictine Abbey, which helped preserve Catalan culture during Franco’s reign. The peaks at the top of the mountain are rounded, unique and striking. The view from the top is not so bad either. Passeig de Gracia — it’s pretty much the ‘Michigan Ave’ of Barcelona. Even if you aren’t into shopping the architecture down this street is incredible. You’ll see Gaudi’s ‘La Pedrera’ and ‘Casa dels Ossos’ aka the house of bones. 49
