Belco Arts acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land where we meet and work, the Ngunnawal people, and the many other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from across Australia who have now made Canberra their home. We celebrate and respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to the life of the ACT and region
ngadhi murangidyal: My Healing Josh Evans
The theme for this exhibition is ngadhi murangidyal – “My healing”. This shows the story of how I connect to Country, Culture and my Ancestors of Wiradjuri ngurambang (Wiradjuri Country) whilst living away. When I’m home, I walk country and collect timber, whilst listening to Country and following my path.
Josh Evans is a proud Wiradjuri man, born and raised on Ngambri Country, but he hails from Wantabadgery, NSW. A small village along the Bila Marrambidya (Murrumbidgee River) in the south-central district of NSW Riverina, through his matrilineal bloodlines. Josh also has connections to Paakantyi Country, Wilcannia, Far West NSW, through his Grandfather.
Josh has been carving Traditional Weapons, Tools and Artefacts for 5 years now. He credits his on-going learnings to many significant individuals across the Country.
In 2022 Josh was presented with the opportunity to make a Boomerang that Prime Minister Albanese presented to NBA Legend Shaquille O’Neal whilst in the country to discuss “The Voice to Parliament” Referendum.
Josh is hopeful of one day having a community based Cultural Arts gallery/workshop/keeping place for all to utilise.
