LETTER / From the editor

Warning: You may not want to read this. Or do you?

I

am going to break so many rules right now it’s going to make your head explode. Wow...you’re still reading. You are a brave soul. This page is supposed to be me telling you about what is so great in this issue. That is kind of silly for two reasons. 1. Most people don’t read this page. It’s okay, I’m trying not to take it personally. 2. If you are reading it then odds are you’ll keep going. Let’s move on. The next, and probably bigger rule I’m going to break is talking about religion. Technically, I’m not going to talk about religion, I’m going to talk about Easter. Since this issue is coming out so close to Easter we didn’t really include anything - but, it’s such a big deal I didn’t want to let it go. And, well, it’s 11:30 at night and there is no one here to stop me. As I’m writing this, America’s beloved pastor Billy Graham has just passed away. He never missed an opportunity to tell people about Jesus so I’m going to channel a little Rev. Graham right now. If you want to know what Easter and Jesus are all about hang with me. I mean, you were willing to see if your head exploded, so no sense wimping out now. Easter is the culmination of the biggest rescue mission of all time. The Bible lays it out - God created us in his own image. We messed up and picked our way over God’s way (that’s sin). God gave us free will, and he let us figure out what we knew in the beginning: Letting God be our Father and leading our lives is actually what we want. To be loved and cared for. But, by the time we figured that out, the damage was done. Our relationship with God was broken, permanently. But God loved us and he wasn’t giving up on us. He decided to rescue us from sin and ourselves. Somebody had to pay our bill, to fulfill our death sentence. He sent His Son Jesus to save us. He pushed you out of the hands of the executioner and laid down on the cross instead. He stamped your bill PAID IN FULL. He died for you. But then He came back to life. That’s Easter. Your only job is to accept this gift of grace. If you want that Easter rescue mission to include you, just tell God. This is not a little thing. God wants everything - not just part of your life...all of it and all of you. You have to want to walk away from the sin in your life (that’s being repentant) and to follow Jesus. He’ll show you how to do life, how to get through things, how to live the life that will bring you peace and great joy. Oh, there’s going to be hard stuff, but you’ll have Jesus to see you through it. If you’re ready, just invite Jesus Christ to come. Here’s what you might say: Heavenly Father, I know that I’ve messed up with You. Please forgive me and save me. I believe Your Son Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead. I want to turn from my sins and I want You to take over my life and show me how to live. I want to trust and follow Jesus as my Lord and Savior. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen. Did your head explode? Pretty awesome I know. There, I’m done breaking rules. Go and enjoy the rest of the issue...and your life of Being Better!

Happy Easter From the Bible

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12 “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.” Isaiah 59:2 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is a gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2: 8-9 “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12 “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

BETTER Stuff

Iced stuff

Now that it’s warming up you may be trading your hot brew for an iced coffee. If you like it chilled try this trick: Pour leftover coffee into ice cube trays and freeze. You can have your iced java without it getting watered down before you’re finish.

Smart aleck stuff

A man was checking in with God on a few things. He asked, “God, how long is a million years to you?” God said, “A million years is like a second.” Then the man asked, “How much is a million dollars to you?” God answered, “A million dollars is like a penny.” The man smiled and said, “Could you spare a penny?” God said, “Sure. Just wait a second.”

Shopping stuff

Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator gives you the ability to see what’s inside your fridge from wherever you are...and it can give you the news and weather too. It’s about five grand. Want to know what’s inside your refrigerator? Take a picture before you go to the store. Then you can see if you need to pick up ketchup with your phone just the same. And you’ll have more money to buy your groceries since you didn’t get the high-tech fridge.

Funny stuff

Gadgety stuff

“When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost.” ─Billy Graham

A few years ago we would have been so impressed with this, but now we kind of expect it. Many new cars now have apps available so you can unlock and start your vehicle or check your fuel level from your bedroom. Leaving at the same time each day? You can schedule your vehicle to start automatically from your phone.

“There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.” ─Franklin D. Roosevelt “Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.” ─ Dale Carnegie

Hollywood stuff

Maybe the most unlikely star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in fact, the star in one of the most coveted spots right in front of Mann’s Chinese Theater, is none other than that of evangelist Billy Graham. He received the honor for his work in radio in 1989. When asked if he minded that his name would be embossed on a street that is often synonymous with sin, Rev. Graham didn’t flinch. “We’re all sinners,” he replied. “Everybody you meet all over the world is a sinner. The word sin means you’ve broken with the laws of God. We’ve all done that. So I couldn’t condemn Hollywood Blvd any more than any other place.” www.beingbettermagazine.com / Spring 2018

Tips & Trends Drapes are back. Sort of.

Meet your coaches

“Windows went through a minimalist phase with little to no window treatments in sight. That trend is losing some ground, and an old friend is coming back around but in an updated fashion.” That’s the word from Siouxland local Pam Kallsen, Decorator Consultant with JC Penney.

Let’s face it. There’s stuff that we just don’t know how to do. The doctor tells us to eat better, to lose weight, and to reduce stress, but HOW? The truth is most people don’t know how to fuel their body the right way and what they should do to get the results they want. That’s where a coach comes in. Jeff and Erin, certified health coaches, can be your coach - and it’s probably not Siouxland locals, Erin Kiel and Jeff Bahrenfuss, what you’re with Strive Health & Wellness, help you reach thinking.

What’s new

“When people think of drapery, images of bulky fabric traversing an extensive rod system may come to mind. Today, stationary panels act as accents to the window, adding style and character. Blinds or shutters provide the functional aspects for light control and privacy.”

What’s in style

If your windows need an update, contact Pam Kallsen, Decorator Consultant, at JCPenney at the Sioux City, IA store at Southern Hills Mall, and she can show you lots of options even for challenging window styles. You can reach her at 712-276-2747 ext. 287 or email her at pkallsen@jcp.com . Free in-home consultation.

your goals in a trending and effective way.

What it’s not. They’re not going to meet you at the gym. You “meet” online, chat through emails, texts, and learn at group get-togethers with like-minded individuals. It’s meant to be comfortable and accessible. Why you want it. Jeff says, “Everybody has different goals. There’s no one-size-fits-all program. We talk to figure out what’s going to work for you. Then we set up a plan. We’re there to go from A to B with you.” Erin adds, “We’re available throughout your day to support you, motivate you, and answer your questions. Even when you don’t know what to eat at the restaurant or a social gathering.” Jeff and Erin teach you how to control portions, habits of health, and how to prepare healthy meals - and that’s just the beginning. Turning back the hands of time Time marches on and those old photos of family and friends show it. With today’s technology, old photos can find new life. Ed Rosston of FastFrame in Sioux City has the ability to restore old pictures and frame antique photos - even those in outdated shapes and sizes.

Slowing down time

“If you want to protect an existing photo, putting it into a frame that protects it from UV light and the elements is key. Quality glass is a big component as is the matting that touches the picture.”

We were able to replace the background, and it became a treasured gift for his father. “We’ve dealt with a lot of things like tears, scratches, and fading. We can colorize, add certain effects, and in most cases give a great outcome. What we can’t do is make a fuzzy image clear. You can’t improve on detail that isn’t there. Not just bad for the bug

As the weather warms up the bugs take flight, and many will meet their maker on the hood of your car. While they get the worst end of the deal, your car suffers too. John Bergdale with Hamilton Touchless says over time they can leave a lasting impression.

Bug tatoos?

"The importance of getting bugs and bird poo off is that it can actually leave a tattoo. The residue washes off, and may even feel smooth, but the pattern of the item is still there. "Waxing is a big factor. It adds a layer of protection from bugs, birds, sun, and the elements and keeps them from damaging your vehicle." It's a good idea to get your car washed and waxed now so it's ready for whatever nature dishes out.

A photo of the Storm Lake Fire Department in 1950 had seen better days. FastFrame restored and colorized it making the vintage photo a classic work of art.

ways to improve

your memory

Stop multi-tasking

A study from Scotland found people with jobs that require lots of high-level, complex brain processes (engineers, for example) tend to have better memories when they were older. Do things that require your brain to work like reading, playing an instrument, playing cards, and shouting answers during TV game shows to keep your brain honed and engaged.

Eat well

12

Being Better in Siouxland magazine / Spring 2018

Write things down so you can see what you want to remember. Say out loud what you need to know. “I need to go to the store for sandwich bags, cheese, and cucumbers.” Equate the list to something. I have three children, and I need three things from the store.

4

Get enough sleep Studies show, the less you sleep the more your cognitive abilities—including your memory—suffer.

5

Move your body

Stacks of research have linked exercise to a more robust memory. Recent studies from the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that among older women, bloodpumping exercise (like aerobics or swimming) significantly increased the volume of the brain’s hippocampus—which helps with verbal memory and learning. The authors say the more you move, the more oxygen and nutrient-carrying blood gets to and feeds your brain. So, move your body if you want to stimulate your memory.

The Mediterranean diet is ranked as one of the most healthful diets on Earth. It focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, healthy fats, (like olive oil, nuts, and fish) and lean protein. Research shows that closely following the MedDiet results in slower rates of cognitive decline and improvements in cognitive function. Two specific benefits indicated were with long-term and working memory. For more on brain foods see page 53.

My best advice

DR. CODY DAVIS

CHIROPRACTOR CHIROPRACTIC FIRST OF IOWA

MY BEST ADVICE:

“Help your body help you.” “As a Chiropractor, I often see cases where patients have injuries that could easily be prevented. Over working, pushing themselves, or eating a poor diet. We work with patients to stay ahead of injuries, as well as how to incorporate activity and nutrition for optimal function. Create a lifestyle where you can help your body, before injury or illness, and get regular adjustments.” Stretch and stay moving “This is a crucial one. We all want to keep our mobility. Stretching throughout the day will further help avoid injury and allow your body to keep going.” Be aware of what you're doing “It is so important for people to know what is going in or on their bodies. So much of what is tied to our health, our brain function, muscles, or inflammation, is due to what we put in our body. Eating a well-balanced diet, organic if possible, and being aware of the chemicals in every day products we use, is crucial to our health. Be aware. Read labels and know what’s going in your body.” Chiropractic First . 4242 Gordon Dr. Sioux City, IA . 712-560-8913 www.chiropracticfirstofiowa.com Your first consultation is always free.

RHONDA CAPRON

OWNER RHONDA’S SENIOR SERVICES

MY BEST ADVICE:

“Make every moment a good moment.”

“When someone in your life has dementia, it can be hard to understand how to interact with them. Just realize that all they have is this one moment.” How to relate “Talk to them. What did they like and who were they? A teacher, a traveler, or animal lover? Find pictures and talk about the things they loved. If they can’t communicate, you may need to carry the whole conversation. It’s important to hold their hand and look them in the eye.” The hard topics “If they ask where a deceased spouse is, telling them could be devastating. All you have to say is that he’s not here right now and then redirect them to focus on something else. All they have is this moment, so make it a good one.” When it’s time for help “If you see them failing with personal care and safety is an issue, you need to make a change. That’s where we can help. We are like an extension of a good daughter, and give one-on-one contact – that’s what stimulates people.” Rhonda Capron and her team provide non-medical care for seniors to keep them active in their own homes. 712-281-5631. www.rhondasseniors.com

MY BEST ADVICE:

“Do this before summer.” “Before it's 100 degrees take a few minutes to do some maintenance on your air conditioner now, and make sure it's ready to go.” 1. Shut the power off. “Turn off the circuit breaker for the air conditioner in the electrical panel, or turn off the 240 volt disconnect which is usually located outside by the air conditioner.” 2. Change the filter. “This will ensure that air flow is maximized and that the unit is running at max efficiency.” 3. Clean the air conditioner coils. “Take the top off the unit and spray water from the inside to clean the coils. Clean up leaves, plants, and debris from the coils and around the unit.” 4. Check the refrigerant piping. “The piping usually has insulation over it. Make sure that it didn't kink or get bent during the winter which can result in leaks.” “Turn the power back on and test it. If your system seems to be cooling properly you should be ready for summer. If there's an issue, call a professional-again, before it's 1000.” CW Suter Services . 1800 11th St . Set your focus. Is it too distracting for you to face your partner? Does facing a wall feel too confined? Maybe having your back to the window throws too much light on your computer screen. Where you sit in the room can make a big difference to feeling comfortable and at ease, so try different options for a few days to find the best one.

ith more and more people working from home, setting up a home office that functions well is huge. If you and your partner are both working from home, creating an office that feels more permanent can make a lot of sense. See the future. Plan for the now and the later. Think of all the ways you’ll use the space (maybe meeting clients or doubling for kids doing homework) and choose a solution that can grow with you.

But, before you buy the builtins, make sure you know what is going to work for you. Give it a test drive. Work in your space for awhile to figure out what obstacles you run into. What will you need quick access to (files, printer, books)? Make sure your built-in plan

The only exceptions might be if the deceased person has been under a doctor’s care and the death isn’t unexpected, then you may start with their doctor’s office. If they’ve been on Hospice, contacting their nurse or Hospice provider is fine. “Someone who is a medical professional has to officially pronounce the person dead. People who are both untrained and invested emotionally may assume their loved one is gone when they aren’t. Paramedics who come on a 911 call can make that determination. “When your loved one has been pronounced dead, then the funeral home can be called. Plus, we’ll be mindful that not everyone has loads of time, money, or skills like the people we admire on HGTV.

[Step 1: Find inspiration

Find what you love. Go through your magazine images, Pinterest pins, Houzz, and HGTV ideas. Find two or three that really speak to you and make a list of what you specifically like. Nail down some details like colors, furniture styles, bedding looks, accessories, and window treatments that you’d like to have.

Tip for success: If your budget is tight or non-existent, or you just like an adventure, start looking for your needs at secondhand shops or rummage sales. You may find the perfect piece and save hundreds. Tip for success: While you may love your inspiration room, use it for direction not something to duplicate exactly. Not only will this keep you from being disappointed when you can’t find everything exactly, it will also allow you to make it uniquely yours.

[Step 2: Take inventory

Know what you have and what you need. Unless you are starting fresh, or have nothing to reuse or

re-purpose, take stock of what you are starting with. If your inspiration room features a seat at the end of the bed think through options you may already have - an old trunk or foot stool, maybe a sofa table (imagine cutting the legs down). Make a list of what you have and what you’ll need to buy.

BETTER / Home a wall color that will work with your bedding then to realize after you’ve painted that it doesn’t work together.

[Step 4: Freshen up

Begin the transformation. Painting or papering the walls will freshen up any space - and can be motivating to complete the project. Tip for success: DO NOT pick out a paint swatch in the store and buy paint immediately. Bring the swatch home and see what the color looks like in your room with your lighting. You may be surprised at how different the color looks. It’s a good idea to get the little paint samples and paint an area on your wall to make sure you really like it before you have gallons of it.

[pStep 3: Set your focus

White and yellow room, bold artwork room By Artazum, and blue headboard room By ShortPhotos/Shutterstock.com

Start with what’s important. For most bedrooms, the focal point is usually the bed, but it could be some artwork or a great rug. Start with what’s important to you and build from that. Hold up other elements you’re considering against your focal piece to determine if it works together. This helps you move confidently toward your goal. Tip for success: Don’t paint until you’ve identified your main style element. It’s a lot easier to find

[Step 5: Floor it

Lay a foundation. Bare floors are still the trend but most people prefer a little warmth and comfort underfoot in the bedroom. There are two popular options for rugs in the bedroom: a room-size rug or a bedside one. For a smaller option try a runner, sheepskin, or small area rug to step out of bed on. If you want a big rug, at its largest it should be at least a foot away from the wall on all sides. Tip for success: If you already have carpet and the floor underneath isn’t pretty or would require a ton of work, try putting an area rug over the existing carpet. Area rugs are great items to look for secondhand.

7 Steps to your

Dream Bedroom

[Step 6: Have a good bedside manner Make your space functional. Good bedroom lighting is a must and you can’t go wrong with matching bedside lamps. After all, you’ve got books to read, a cell phone to charge, and a place for your coffee in the morning. Whether you use a crate, vintage suitcase, or standard end table it’s best to have them about mattress height up to six inches higher. If you are replacing overhead lighting, you won’t regret a dimable option.

[Step 7: Show some style

It’s all about the details. A lot of a bedroom’s character comes through in the accents. Look at your room and see what’s missing, where it feels empty or boring. Add plants, pillows, pictures and art. Unless you have a very tall headboard, there are two options that almost always work well. Choose one large piece of art or create a grid with framed pieces that are the same size. Tip for success: Remember, there are design guidelines but in the end all that matters is that you and whoever you share the room with love it. Make it a comfortable, functional, and an inviting space where you can truly live and rest.

Tip for success: Another option in place of bedside tables is to hang floating shelves on each side of the bed - or just one side if space is an issue. Hang them about mattress height.

ou see those bundles of fur and it’s hard to resist the cuteness. The cuddliness. The companionship. Before you rush to the shelter to adopt your barking (or purring) bundle of joy, you need to do a little assessment. A little soul searching and reality check. Too many people make quick decisions without considering everything. Let’s make sure you make the right decision for you and your pet.

an emergency arose. Where will you keep the pet when you leave? Are you willing to deal with inevitable messes, training, and scheduling your time for walks, feedings, and play? A pet will be part of your day-to-day life. Make sure you are ready to make him part of the family.

Do your homework. Before you go to pick out your pet, know what type of pet is going to work for you. If people in your family have allergies a bishon or poodle might be best. Do you have room for a big dog? If you have kids or other pets in the home, that needs to be a big consideration. If you hate vacuuming you should know what breeds shed less. Can you handle a high-energy pet who needs lots of exercise, or do you want one that’s more docile? Understanding what your needs and expectations of a pet are will help you get the right one that fits with your lifestyle. Be kind. Understand that pets are a part of the family. Don’t think, “It’s just a dog/cat and it can stay outside.” These animals are breathing, living creatures and they have feelings. Be ready to give them a great life.

Embrace reality. A pet can’t be what we want today and not what we want tomorrow. A pet can live 15+ years. If you’re thinking, “We can try it and see,” reconsider. This decision should be a life-long commitment. Adopting a pet is much like having a child in your home. Think through how much it will cost to feed your pet each week, how much vaccinations will be, and if you’d have funds if

suggestions to grow a healthy lawn, clean up your landscaping, and get your outdoor area on the right track. Clear the field “The first job is to give your lawn some breathing room. We need to get rid of all the dead stuff left over from fall and winter - that’s called dethatching the lawn. We use a power rake, but you can achieve the same result with a hard rake. This opens up the lawn so the fertilizer can actually get to the roots and not just sit on top of all the debris.” Timing: April How to: Go over the lawn twice. hy on earth would anyone live in the Midwest when we have bitterly cold winters here and uncomfortably humid summers? Maybe it fulfills a deep need to justifiably complain about something. Maybe it’s because we are a tough crowd who believes dealing with hard things makes us even stronger. And maybe we see that we can have a good life in spite of our occassional weather challenges. When spring comes, we welcome it with open arms. As things come to life outdoors, so do we. It’s no wonder we work at creating outdoor spaces where we can feel at

up all the dead grass and debris. Use a broom rake to gather it all up. Get growing “If you didn’t seed in the fall, it’s good to do in the spring because Mother Nature is helping you with moisture, so you don’t have to water as much. Adding more seed to an existing lawn is called over-seeding and is something to do each year until your lawn is very thick. Over-seeding simply means adding more grass seed to thicken up your lawn. Having a thicker lawn is the first step in keeping your lawn healthy and helps prevent weeds (it chokes them out).” Timing: Mid-April is probably a good time. The ground needs to be at least 550 for grass seed to germinate. How to: Use a seed spreader to disperse seed evenly across the lawn or add to thin or bare areas. Clean it up “Cleaning up the landscaping along your foundation where you have mulch or rocks will brighten things up and add curb appeal. Get all the dead stuff cleared out around your perennials and shrubs. If you have mulch, each year some of it deteriorates, settles, or blows away so it will need to be refreshed to keep weeds and debris out. Top it off or replace it. This is usually a lot easier to do before things start growing in.” Timing: April/May How to: This is probably going to involve getting your hands dirty.

application cycle. It’s easier to be proactive then reactive to a problem later.” Timing: If you overseed, put a starter fertilizer to get the grass going. Otherwise, wait to fertilize until you’ve mowed once. How to: Follow the product instructions. Stop the invasion “If you have had a weed issue in the past, it’s not a bad idea to do a preimmergent which is a barrier that stops crabgrass and any weeds.” Timing: Mid-April/May. If you’re over-seeding, you’ll need to make sure the new grass is growing and has been mowed twice. If you seed early enough you may be able to do a pre-immergent application before weeds emerge. How to: Follow the product instructions.

Feed your lawn “Fertilizing helps your lawn stay healthy. We use a golf-course grade fertilizer that provides a slow release which is best for the longevity of your lawn. Plus, you only need four applications of fertilizer if it’s the good stuff. Lower quality feed often suggests seven applications. “Good fertilizer is going to give you a healthier lawn and a better stand of grass. If you don’t feel you need to fertilize the odds are weeds will come. A sparse lawn gives space for weeds. It’s not a bad idea to get on a regular

hen you’re in love, you think that feeling is invincible. That you’ll always feel the same way. Remember that the people who are now divorced thought the same thing. Whether you are planning on getting hitched one day or are hitting some pitfalls inside your marriage, now’s the time to learn some things. Jeff Thelander, who mentors couples at Sunnybrook Church, has seen marriage from the inside (being married for 20 years) and from the backside (meeting with married couples who are struggling). Let his insight speak into your relationship.

Make relationship investments. Jeff says, “The biggest thing that wrecks relationships is not knowing how to effectively communicate.

When people come in for premarital counseling, we give them a survey to complete. Couples answer 150 questions on things like handling finances, religion, how they’ll discipline their children, what the roles in the home with be, and how often they’ll have sex. They go in thinking they’ve talked about everything, but they get questions on topics from an angle they hadn’t thought of. When we compare both sides they see where their answers don’t line up. That’s where the conversations need to happen. “You can’t know exactly what it’s like until you’re doing life in the marriage, but you can be equipped to deal with things. Make investments ahead to prepare for trouble later. You have to learn how to talk about things.”

to break down into trying to outdo the hurt the other is inflicting. We end up making darts out of our past issues. Decide that your spouse has your best interests at heart. When an issue comes up tell yourself, ‘I’m going to choose to believe the best.’ When your partner has to work late don’t think, ‘He just doesn’t want to have to deal with the kids tonight!’ Instead, remember to believe the best. ‘He works so hard to provide for us.’ If you really think there’s a problem, share your concerns from the ‘believing the best’ mindset. ‘Honey, I know you work hard to provide for us,

What’s your love language? “We take our couples through Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages book. You need to know how your spouse feels loved. For some it’s WORDS OF AFFIRMATION hearing they did a good job, that you’re proud of them. For others it’s ACTS OF SERVICE - getting help carrying the groceries, emptying the dishwasher. Some people like RECEIVING GIFTS. Some need to have QUALITY TIME with the one they love. Others respond to PHYSICAL TOUCH - a hug, holding hands in public. “Knowing this information is sometimes used negatively when we’re mad. If I know my wife’s love language is acts of service and we’ve had a fight, I may decide that I don’t feel like helping out. I’m not going to take care of the dishes like she’d like. “That ususally doesn’t work to solve the problem. It typically just begins a negative cycle. “When my wife comes home, tired, and sees that I haven’t taken care of the dishes, she decides to withhold words of affirmation that make me feel loved. “Instead, use your love language to reverse the cycle. If we’ve had a hard day and I come home and pick up the house before she gets home, she feels that love. It’s far more likely to set the stage for healing - not going toward more hurting.” Remember, love is a verb. “Love is an action. Yes, it’s a feeling, but it’s not what drives us. I love when I act even when I don’t feel like it. I do things for my wife regardless, sacrificially. We can fortify our marriage by setting our default to act in love at all times. When there are times of frustration, disconnection, or we’re drifting apart, I need to return to speaking into what my spouse’s love language is. That’s how we serve each other.”

24

Being Better in Siouxland magazine / Spring 2018

The heart of building strong marriages is knowing our spouse’s love language and pouring into that. That’s love in action. “Whatever you pour into your spouse the more likely they’ll pour the same into you. Will that be hurt or healing?” Get some help from The Guy you invited to your wedding. “Spend time praying not just for each other but with each other. Don’t disregard this. This can be such a powerful thing. If this is weird for you, just start by holding hands and talk about what you’re thankful for. Once we get to a point where we’re comfortable sharing thankfulness, it gets easier. Then, when we’re going through a stressful time in our marriage, with a child, our job, or another family member, you talk to God about that. ‘God at this time we just need...’ and you spend maybe two to three minutes. Pretty soon it’s this normal thing. “Prayer is so critical. Because when we make a vow before God for our marriage, we should invite him into it every day. I have never had a couple that I’ve counseled say, ‘I think our biggest problem is that we pray too much.’ The opposite is typically true. When people are stressed and things are going bad people often can’t remember the last time they’ve prayed.” There’s no such thing as a perfect marriage. “We have couples at Sunnybrook Church who meet with couples who are going through hard times. Those couples are capable of understanding struggles, because they (me included) have all been through them. It’s in the mistakes that we’ve made that help us help others. Couples think they are the only ones in conflict. Every couple will have conflicts. It’s not about having conflict, it’s about what you do to process it.” “Ephesians 5:21-33 gives a beautiful picture of what marriage should look like. If both sides go into it with love and with a mindset to serve the other in great ways, it’s a win-win. It’s never too late to choose to take that path either.” When you’re in love, don’t skip key steps in ensuring its survival. If you’d like to find out about the premarital quiz and mentoring, OR if you and your spouse are struggling, you can reach out to Jeff Thelander at Sunnybrook Church. hen we think of women building a home it’s our tendency to envision them doing that from the inside out nurturing their family, decorating, cleaning, making meals, and negotiating soccer schedules. But this is the 21st century and women can and will do so much more. Sometimes building a home from the outside in. If you’re ready to get your hands dirty, National Women Build Week (NWBW) is a week-long event that invites women to actively help families build strength, stability, and independence through housing. It’s an annual event created by Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program and partnered with Lowe’s. The program invites women to devote at least one day to help families in their community and spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by women. NWBW is held each year during the week leading up to Mother’s Day - Saturday, May 6 through Friday, May 12, 2018. Siouxland Habitat for Humanity hosts this event during this time to reinforce the

message that every woman can make a difference through learning and using construction skills. Across the nation, more than 98,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered at the nine previous NWBW events. Though our neighborhoods are comprised largely of women and children, they are also the population’s most likely to be affected by poor living conditions. Their Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities. Their events are available to any woman who wants to learn to build and construct a home. No experience is necessary. Volunteers work

under the guidance of construction professionals and alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you’re learning a new skill or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved, and improves the community that you share. Women Build is also a terrific way to involve your friends and family in crucial work with a lasting impact. Women helping women sends a positive and powerful message. You can also come alone and make new friends! The atmosphere is collaborative and friendly. If you’re ready to learn some new skills, use ones you already have, and help women build a home and a life, join the fun.

“They want to have a say in their care. In the past, doctors were trained to be more paternalistic - I’m the doctor and this is the way it’s done. I think newer docs are being trained to share in the decision making with the patient. I feel as someone’s doctor I’m here to tell you what I think is safest and best, to share the pros and cons of different options, but ultimately the decisions for your body are up to you.”

What is important when people are choosing a doctor?

“To find a doctor that they trust, that listens, and who takes their concerns seriously.”

Why did you choose obstetrics?

“When I saw how OB docs were there for women at such an important, crucial, and memorable time in their lives, that really impressed me. I saw them jump up in emergency situations and save babies and moms. Plus, it’s the only place in the hospital where patients are excited to be there.”

The doctors of Siouxland Obstetrics & Gynecology, PC. From left, Dr. Melissa Holtz, Dr. Tauhni Hunt, Dr. Paul Eastman, Dr. Angela Aldrich, and Dr. Hannah Dewald.

Why is it a big deal?

Dr. Dewald shares, “Women finally have choices. Women feel differently about how to deliver their baby. Having a vaginal delivery is a unique experience and some women don’t want to miss that. “It’s important to note that many people think having a c-section is no big deal. It’s perceived as, ‘Oh, I’m just going in to having my baby.’ As

delivery doctors and obstetricians, we see it as major surgery. With surgery there are risks. You can develop scar tissue in your abdomen and pelvis so there’s more possibility for injury to tissue with future pregnancies, you have a little bit longer recovery time, plus more risk for infection and dangerous complications like blood clots in the legs or lungs.

In the 1970’s just 5% of women had a c-section. In 2016 the rate was 32%. “There are risks with a vaginal delivery as well. The good news is that now there are more options for women to make the best decision for their family and situation.”

Who’s a good/bad candidate?

“We’ll talk with each patient who’s had a c-section to see if doing a vaginal delivery makes sense. You might not be a good candidate if you’ve had more than two c-sections, have a higher BMI, or if your last c-section

If I want a VBAC can I still go to my family doctor?

“Yes. If your family practice doc takes care of you and you want a VBAC you just need to have an OBGYN on hand for the procedure when you deliver. Your doc can refer you to us. We like to see patients starting around 28 weeks along.” Times change and with advances so do the rules. Have a conversation with your doctor and know that you now have options.

very woman who has had a baby knows the rule: If you have a c-section, every birth after that will also have to be by c-section. Now, we all know that rules were made to be broken, but this one doesn’t even qualify as a rule anymore. Now you have a choice. Dr. Hannah Dewald with Siouxland Obstetrics & Gynocology, PC was performing a procedure known as a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) in Colorado. delivery was pretty recent. We’ll also look at the reason for your last c-section. For example, if you were pushing for a few hours and then needed a c-section - big baby vs. small pelvis - that may be a factor. “We’re here to counsel each patient on what is safe and what their plans are for their family. If they only want one or two children, it’s not as big of a problem if they do want a c-section.

few years back, we were part of a health fair at a large Siouxland business. A woman who had attended the fair ended up coming into the store looking for a pair of shoes for her very sore feet. What she really got was something pretty amazing," reports Jim Ewoldt with Peak Performance. “A week after she bought the shoes, she came back into the store - she was looking for me. She explained who she was and mentioned her recent purchase. I remembered her and then she said, 'These shoes saved my job and my marriage.'”

A job and a marriage

“She explained that her job required her to be on her feet all day and that it had taken its toll. Her feet had been so terribly, terribly sore. She had many years in with the company and didn't want to leave and lose her benefits, but her husband was feeling abandoned because she never felt like doing anything after work. She felt she was going to have to quit her job or lose her husband. It's crazy to think all she needed was a new pair of shoes. “We see it all the time. People don't

“Of course we also have shoes for sports and running too. Sometimes races come down to the shoes. Maybe, just maybe, the race for love could be affected too. have the right size or the right type of support. We assess each situation and make sure we get people in the right shoe for their needs.

Frostbite in a fox hole

“We had a gentleman come in well, he was brought in by his wife and daughter. He was a Korean War vet who'd gotten frostbite on his toes in a fox hole. He had been wearing a very soft shoe which is nice and soft, but it's like walking on a water bed - there's no stability. We put him into the right shoe and as he walked across the room. His wife had tears in her eyes and the daughter was smiling from ear to ear. They said he hadn't walked that well in years. “No one wants to lose their mobility. No one wants to need help walking. People have pride and want to do things for

“We had a guy who was just an okay runner so he wasn't really enjoying it as much as he wanted. He came in for some advice and we got him into a better shoe. He started running more races and winning more races. He met a gal at one of those races. They got married and have three kids. If we didn't have shoes that helped him love running, he wouldn't have the love of his life. “Okay, so maybe that didn't have a lot to do with us, but our stories are why we do what we do. We see how important it can be for someone to make one little change. Something as simple as getting shoes that help you in your life may take you from can't to maybe I can. “We hope we can help you with your story.”

hat’s the deal? Suddenly you can’t laugh, lift anything, or God forbid, sneeze without wetting yourself a little. Is something broken in there? Siouxland Urology Associates has the answer. “People have heard the commercials on TV about overactive bladder but that has some different causes. When you leak a little urine when you exert yourself, that’s probably urinary incontinence.”

Should I be worried?

“If you’re concerned, see a doctor to rule out any other issues and for the best advice for your particular situation. We incorporate different tests to determine bladder issues. We may do

Spicy, sugary, and acidic foods may trigger some incontinence.

What’s going on down there?

“Your bladder is a hollow organ in the lower abdomen that stores urine. Overactive bladder is a condition where the bladder squeezes urine out at the wrong time. Symptoms for that can include going eight or more times a day and/or a couple of times at night. You may have a sudden, strong need to urinate immediately - and you might not make it to the restroom. Urinary incontinence is a loss of bladder control. If you only lose control when you do something like sneeze, laugh, or cough that’s called stress incontinence.”

“Whether you haven’t experienced it yet or want it to stop, there are a few ways that might help. Depending on your situation, it may just be a temporary issue. It’s not unusual for women to have a little incontinence during their pregnancy. “Focusing on overall health is a good start. Being overweight can put pressure on your organs. Smoking, some medicines, foods, and some diseases (like diabetes) may be playing a part too. Eat more fiber to prevent constipation - which is a cause of urinary incontinence.

Your kidneys filter 120-150 quarts of blood each day to produce up to 2 quarts of urine. Ureters carry the urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

urine tests, x-rays, and an examination of the bladder wall with a scope called a cystoscope. Treatment depends on the cause of the problem. It may include medicines and, in severe cases, surgery. “If your leaking is simply a case of stress incontinence, while that may be embarrassing and uncomfortable, it’s

“Often, as we age, the muscles in our bladder and urethra lose some of their strength. For women, weak pelvic floor muscles may be the culprit so strengthening your core and pelvic floor muscles may help. “If things don’t improve, see your doctor so you can feel free to laugh again.”

Yoga and Pilates’ movements can help to strengthen your core and pelvic floor muscles.

f you suffer with constant pain, grogginess, and mental cloudiness, it’s hard to be fully engaged in life. It’s like a half-life. Let’s live a real, full life instead. Fibromyalgia is a disorder of widespread pain that affects the muscles and soft tissue. Plus, people feel drained, sleepy, and experience memory and mood problems. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia messes with how your brain processes pain signals. It seems to turn up the knob on painful sensations. Who’s at risk? According to Dave Welch, PA with Midwest Pain Clinics, “Women are far more likely to get fibromyalgia. It’s pretty rare for a man to get it. Typically, we see it in women over age 45. Other than that, there’s not much to go on to know who’s at risk. Research hasn’t given any specific answers yet. We just don’t know why people get it.” Do I have it? Dave says, “With so little info on why this occurs, there’s no way to know for certain, other than eliminating what it’s not. The docs will do tests to weed things out. They’ll rule out any autoimmune disorder – like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. If they’re left with no cause they can pinpoint it to, fibromyalgia is the possibility that’s left.”

Dr. Cook (third from right), David Welch, PA (center), and nurse practitioner Amy Klimisch (third from left) and their staff work together so you can participate in life again.

Common symptoms • Widespread pain. You have pain that has lasted for months and the pain is in several areas of your body. • Fatigue. You feel groggy even though you’ve gotten rest. Sleep may be disrupted by pain or things like restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea. • Fibro-fog. You feel like you can’t focus or concentrate on mental tasks. How do I deal with the pain? According to Dave, “Everyone with fibromyalgia is unique. Where your pain is, how bad it is, and how it’s limiting you. So, just like how fibromyalgia is diagnosed - by a process of elimination - that’s how we approach pain management. There are a lot of options and we start with the most natural and go from there. If something doesn’t work we try the next one until we find a solution for you. “While there are over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs we can try, here are a few options that may help that are more natural with fewer risks of side effects.” Natural remedies. “First of all, eat right. A healthy diet may do wonders.

Adding things like turmeric, fish oil, B12 and folate (folic acid), magnesium, and St. John’s wart have shown to be helpful for many.” Physical activity. “Keeping active is critical for your fibromyalgia care. Things like yoga, swimming, and walking may be comfortable exercises that don’t exacerbate the pain.” Non-medical therapy. “Some people have found relief from things like acupuncture, deep tissue massage (if you can tolerate it), and cupping where heated glass cups are applied to the skin, creating suction as a way of stimulating blood flow and reducing pain and inflammation.” Learning not to hurt. “Sometimes people don’t know they can learn to mentally manage their pain. One of the things we offer is cognitive behavioral therapy. We can teach people how to think differently. Sometimes our culture and experiences have not equipped us to deal with pain. We can help rewire that thinking and pain can be surprisingly more manageable. Finding what works means being able to live a real life.

The germiest stuff you’ll touch today AKA: Where to start your spring cleaning The things around your house you think are the dirtiest may not be as bad as you think - because you probably clean those. Let’s take inventory of some items people rarely think to clean.

Here are some of the worst in no particular order.

2

Salt & pepper shakers.

Think about it. We touch them when we’re eating and they’re in the midst of food. Think they get a little gross? Yep. It’s time to scrub them down with a hot, soapy rag...a clean one.

Refrigerator handle.

hard to clean all those cracks and crannies. But lurking in those crevices are things like Staph, Coliform, yeast, and mold. Blasting it with canned air will get rid of the potato chip crumbs, but we need to wipe off the stuff that is alive and growing in there.

1

You pretty much can’t find a germier item then a kitchen sponge and a dishrag isn’t much better. A sponge can contain 10 million bacteria per square inch. Studies show that a quarter of all dishrags are teaming with E. Coli. Salmonella shows up in a whole bunch too. The recommendation is to use a brush instead when possible - one that can be thrown into the dishwasher. When you do use a dishrag, start with a clean one every day.

34

We make breakfast. Crack some eggs, put the bacon on the griddle and before we wipe our hands we open the fridge to put the rest away. Despite our efforts to only use the two fingers we think we don’t have as much gunk on, that handle is basically a petri dish growing all kinds of funky stuff. Time to disinfect it and add that to our weekly, if not daily, list of things to clean.

Toothbrush & holder.

It sits there, right next to our toilet, where it is subject to wetness, mouth germs, toothpaste residue, and a host of beautifying and cleaning over-spray. And if you don’t close the lid when you flush the toilet, you don’t want to know what else is landing on your toothbrush. A report from NSF International , the public health organization, found 27% of toothbrush holders were home to Coliform bacteria—a sickness-causing family of microorganism that includes Salmonella and E. coli. Clean it up.

We may have grown up having a few options for eye wear. If you were in sports you could get glasses that were a little more durable, there were glasses just for reading, and ones for driving. According to Dr. Janet Fett with Kincaid, Fett & Tharp Vision Source, in South Sioux City, today’s eye wear can get ultra-specific. Dr. Fett says, “Your vision needs for reading a book that you hold below you is different than trying to read a computer screen, and the angle changes again if you’re trying to read music. For key elements in your life, eye wear can adapt for you. “There’s not just one solution for people who do sports. If you are playing basketball, which is one of the leading sports where eye injuries are reported, eye wear safety is a necessity. If you are a golfer, traditional lenses may limit teeing off and viewing the ball in flight. For target and game shooting, lighting of the situation is key. A fisherman needs lenses that

grown man tattles on his nine-yearold self. “I was sitting at the kitchen counter and got cold. I scrunched up my legs inside my shirt and pulled in my arms. The barstool had no arms and now, a human egg, I flip onto my Humpty face breaking off my front tooth on the floor.” At Family 1st Dental, they hear all kinds of stories. Dr. Barr says, “At the movies you bite into an old maid and break off a piece of your tooth...and you’re leaving on vacation the next day. Before, you’d have to come in to get a temporary crown while the real one was being created. Today, with CEREC we can do it all in one visit. The technology has gotten so good we can do the whole thing in the office.” Dr. Kurth adds, “Before you had to bite into this gooey mold. Now it’s all digital. We use a computer wand attached to the computer to create your custom crown. It’s about 90 minutes from start to finish but only about 15 minutes working in a patient’s mouth. The rest of the time you just hang out. You can even watch the machine carve the crown. It’s much more convenient for the patient without multiple appointments.” No matter how you end up breaking a tooth, fixing it is just about as interesting.

Whether you do sports, spend a lot of time in front of a screen, play music, or have other interests where seeing is critical, eye wear has evolved to fit your unique life.

f you think that human trafficking is only something that happens in other countries or in big cities, not here in Siouxland, you are not alone, but you are very, very wrong.

Local individuals and agencies who are combating human trafficking will tell you it is worse than you can possibly imagine. Much, much worse. Please know that this is something that could happen to your own child or someone you know and love. Our goal in this article is not to frighten you but to empower you. Knowledge is power and when we understand how we can prevent it, recognize it, and reach out to save those in it (and stop putting up with those who perpetrate it and purchase it), then lives can be better in Siouxland.

Being groomed For obtaining younger kids, a groomer is often used. Sister Shirley Fineran, who is the Director of Field Education and Assistant Professor of Social Work at Briar Cliff University, explains. “The bad news is, almost anyone can be a groomer. It may be someone your child goes to school with, perhaps their same age. A woman who becomes a trusted friend. Someone they meet online in a chat room or on Craig’s list. “The groomer is going to do things to gain their trust over time. They may chat about things to get and give information to build a relationship. They may give them, or encourage them to get, a secret phone or apps to hide their conversations. They may buy them expensive gifts. “At some point they will get them to go with them - and they may never come back, or they will convince them to do something that they will never want to tell.”

How they do it Amy explains one method, “What does every young girl want? To feel loved and beautiful. A guy meets a girl through a mutual friend or at a party and convinces her that he can take care of her (struggling college student or single mom). He sells her on this great adventure. It’ll be a great weekend - fun, food, alcohol, at a bar, or a friend’s house. In the process of having fun, you are coerced into

38

Team practices, classes, and parties are used by groomers to recruit and manipulate kids.

Trafficked in place Sister Shirley adds, “Sometimes people are trafficked where they live.

Being Better in Siouxland magazine / Spring 2018

Parents may traffic their own children for money or drugs. Young people being trafficked may become so fearful of being found out they don’t know how to get out. Or, their lives, or those of their family, have been threatened so believably that they continue to do whatever the trafficker tells them. One woman tells of her trafficker picking her up every night (starting when she was 15) and bringing her back home before school. She did that every day for years.”

If your kid has one of these then you need to do this with it. Parents absolutely need to patrol their child’s social media. It is not invasive if a life is saved.

How to prevent it Sex trafficking is forcing someone to sell themselves for sex without giving them the option of stopping. Sister Shirley cautions, “While some people are more likely to be trafficked, like those in foster care or aging out of it, everyone is at risk. It happens in every economic area. It’s all about who they can control.” Trust your gut “When you watch someone and you get that feeling that something’s not right, pay attention to it. For example, a convenience store is a likely area. Watch for people who don’t engage. If you see a couple of girls together and they don’t look at you or respond when you say hi, that’s a red flag.

hen we hear about human trafficking, let’s admit it, most of us don’t think that it’s something that will ever happen in our neck of the woods. Not here in Siouxland. The fact is where there are naive people it may be even more prevalent. Human traffickers prey upon the unaware. I was talking with someone about this topic and they told me about a story they saw on Facebook (aka: the holy grail of factual information that is completely trustworthy). Apparently, a dad with his two small children were at the mall. He noticed two men following them and watching his every move. They were waiting to grab his children so they could sell them into sex trafficking. I asked Amy Munderloh, director of Haven House in South Sioux City, if that’s how it happens. Amy warns, “While that might happen, it’s really a misconception. The people who are engaged in human trafficking are stealthy. They make themselves out to be good people just wanting to offer their love and support. They make false promises of a new life or fast money. “They go after people who they can reel in. College students who need money. The young, single mom who’s broke. The homeless seeking shelter. The high school (or middle school) girl who wants to be loved. The confused LGBTQ kid.”

having sex with someone for money through false promises or threats. You are told no one will ever know what you did. But then, ‘Oh, you thought it was just the one time? Well, we have pictures and video. You wouldn’t want that on the Internet now would you? Want mom to see that? You’ll need to do it again, or else.’ “The shame is huge and they keep doing it for fear they’ll be exposed. It is forced prostitution and many times drugs like methamphetamines are involved to control the victim. They become a slave to that trafficker. Once you’re in it’s very hard to get out.”

Maybe they seem a little fearful. What young girl these days doesn’t have a cell phone or purse? This may indicate someone is trying to keep control of them. If you notice a tattoo and it’s the same as someone they’re with, that can be a mark of ownership. Having someone’s name tattooed on your neck isn’t normal. If they go out and get into a car that’s waiting for them, that’s a sign of someone that’s controlling them. It’s good to take down the license plate number, but even more importantly, the make of the car. Many

times they switch license plates. If you see something that’s not normal, that doesn’t feel right, call! Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline. You don’t have to KNOW a person is

being trafficked, you just have to sense something’s wrong and convey that information (yourself) to the hotline. Call the national hotline number (not just local law enforcement), because that gets the FBI involved. In smaller communities, they may not have protocols in place to handle human trafficking. The hotline people will get the right people involved.” Pay attention and be snoopy “This is where you can’t be too careful,” Sister Shirley stresses. “If you notice that someone in your family or at school all of a sudden has new clothes and you don’t know where they got them, or expensive types of gifts and material possessions, this is a big warning sign that someone is lavishing them with gifts. It is really important that parents or someone intervenes quickly. This groomer, this person who’s telling them, ‘I love you,’ this boyfriend is getting stronger and gaining more control. He’s telling the younger person, ‘Now you can’t tell anybody about this.’ “Be aware that they may have a secret phone and/or secret apps. One app looks like a calculator, but it’s a way to chat under the radar. If your child has been manipulated by their groomer (who they believe is their boyfriend, friend, or confidant) they may not be forthcoming with information. You need to be diligent especially if you see signs. “If you see them start doing actions and behaviors that they haven’t done before, make a call, get some help and information. Many times, once they’ve drawn them in, they will take them out of the community so they don’t have resources to contact anyone when they realize they were tricked.” It may be nothing, but make the call if you suspect something may not be right. If it is something, that could mean everything to that person. You may be the only voice they have.

BETTER / Life healing may take years. Women need a lot of support and space to get back their dignity, self worth, and confidence. Sister Shirley has a plan. “Three years ago, I went to a conference. Teresa Flores, who is a sex trafficking survivor - the 15-year-old I mentioned earlier - wrote the book Slave Across the Street. After years of abuse she was eventually beaten and left for dead. Women often take their own life just to get out of the life. Usually by the time they are in the life for any length of time, the trafficker has threatened to kill them and their family. They feel there is no way out. They are routinely beaten and watch other women beaten as well - or killed. Teresa explained that what they experience is much like Stockholm syndrome or PTSD. “After the workshop, I went home. In my prayer room I told God I needed to do more than I was doing to help these women. I sat there until the idea for Lila Mae’s House came to me.

Marissa Messinger, who is on our cover and who posed as our sex-trafficking victim on pg 37, is a senior at Briar Cliff. She herself is a survivor of sexual assault and a powerful advocate for change.

Advocating for change “I became a passionate advocate for sexual assault awareness after my freshmen year of college when I was raped. It impacted my life in every way possible making daily activities very difficult. At the time, Briar Cliff built a wall of support around me that truly helped me heal. As I did, I felt compelled to share my story, become educated, and advocate. In 2017, I served as Miss Polk County Lila’s House will be home to seven women who and competed for the title of Miss are sex trafficking survivors. Its location is secret. Money matters

TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FINANCES IN 2018 WITH SIOUXLAND FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

Tips To Save Money 1. Track your expenses. Before you get started on your saving plan, track your expenses. There are specific expenses that occur every month, as well as other costs that occur on a situational basis. Keep record of all expenditures by entering them into your budget sheet. By recording your utility bill, groceries, fuel expenses, and other payments for an entire month, you will have a good understanding of how you spend your money. Then you can decide the areas to cut expenses.

Money jar By panpilai paipa/Shutterstock.com

M

ost people plan to save money, but by the time the paycheck reaches their account, saving money seems so much harder. Instant gratification and frequent spending have become the new “normal.” Day by day, the wants of consumers are escalating and in some cases have almost become confused with actual needs. This mindset can impact monthly budgeting in negative ways. A heavy-spending lifestyle could become a never-ending cycle, and many people struggle to get out of it. Unfortunately, there is no quick answer or short cut. However, a bit of planning, self-control, and willpower can help you to pursue your goals of saving. You may have tried saving money before but were unable to stick to your saving plans. It happens.

2. Emergency fund. Most Americans don’t save enough for what they want, let alone for what they need: about 60% of us have less than $1,000 in savings now. Building and maintaining an emergency fund is vital for financial security; it’s the difference between keeping up with your monthly bills and sliding into debt and possible bankruptcy. 3. Carry a list. Take a list along when you shop for groceries or other household items. With a list, you may be less tempted to pick up random stuff that you may not need at that moment. 4. Do comparative price checks. Do comparative price checks when you go shopping. If you are unaware of the average prices charged for items, then

you may get fooled into paying high prices. It will take up some of your time, but it may be worth it in the long run when you’re saving money. Also, keep an eye out for discount offers and seasonal sales–these may provide great money-saving opportunities. 5. Stop relying on credit cards. It’s way too easy to swipe a card when you don’t have the cash. There are many benefits to using credit cards, but the best way to avoid overspending is to avoid using your credit card if you don’t have the cash to pay for that purchase. Either carry cash with you to make that purchase or have the money available to immediately pay back what you spent on the credit card. Ensuring that you have the cash available before making a purchase will help drive you to stay on budget and ignore those impulses to make unnecessary purchases. 6. Use a separate bank account for saving. Keep the amount you save every month separate from the checking account that you use for dayto-day purchases, so you will be less likely to accidentally spend it.

Put a little away each week and you can see how quickly it starts adding up.

Use the following tips to help you devise a realistic savings plan. www.beingbettermagazine.com / Spring 2018

Register your drone. “The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all drone owners to register each drone weighing between 0.55 and 55 pounds. This has been in effect since Dec 12, 2017.” Don’t assume you can fly anywhere. “Most people think they can fly their drone anywhere. This is not the case. There are a lot of restrictions and No Drone Zones are popping up throughout the country. Visit knowbeforeyoufly.org to learn more about no drone zones.” Avoid crowds. “People may want to record their kid’s sporting events using a drone. While this sounds like a great idea, it is illegal. Recreational drones cannot fly over groups of people. There is a lot of liability if the drone would crash on someone or cause damage to structures. Even if you have a commercial license, you have to apply for a waiver to fly over people/events. That waiver is tricky to get.” Know where you are. “Another big “no fly” zone is within five miles of

an airport. It’s a good general rule to stay away from airports, but you can get permission to fly within the five miles of an airport if you get proper authorization from the control tower. Use Google Maps or a handy drone app called AirMap to see where you are and how far away you are from the airport. You may find that the five miles away from an airport rule covers a majority of the city. If that’s the case, you’re grounded until you get the proper clearance to fly.” Parks may not be wide open. “Many national parks don’t allow drones due to too many accidents. Be sure to do your research before heading out.” Professional assistance is available. “Drones are fun but knowing the rules will keep you out of hot water. If you need some videos or photos, hiring a professional may be the way to go to save yourself from any liability issues.”

Flying since 2016, Brian takes product photos and videos, property videos, and has assisted in insurance damage claims as shown above.

Pro-life or Pro-choice

What everyone agrees on WITH KRISTI NATHANIEL Client Services Director at HER HEALTH

N

o matter what side of the discussion you’re on regarding pregnancy, there are a few things that seem to be universal when an unplanned pregnancy occurs. Client Services Director, Kristi Nathaniel, with Her Health Women’s Center has seen a lot of similarities and reactions to the very difficult situation young women and men find themselves in. Kristy offers some perspective for those who may find themselves in that situation.

It’s not just about me. “Women from all walks of life come in. The decisions they need to make aren’t just about their life or that of their baby’s. There are other people who will be greatly affected by their decision. A girl’s parents may want her to finish college or want a grandchild. Other children they already have are considered. The baby’s father has an opinion. Many times the girl is waiting for input from the people who matter most. “A young gal came in unsure of what her baby daddy really wanted. The father went from being very quiet, but when he saw his baby on the ultrasound his face lit up and he was smiling from ear to ear. She turned to look at him expecting the worst, but seeing his face changed everything. Today they are together raising their baby. Most women don’t want to feel alone in making such a big decision. They might not agree with the input they get, but they want to know what key people think.”

It’s not an easy decision. “Recently, a girl came in who was very pro-life, but she was in a difficult situation. She sat there crying because she realized that she wasn’t completely ruling out abortion. Another girl came in very pro-choice, also crying, and said, ‘I never realized how hard this decision is.’”

Women need help. “We realize what a huge issue an unplanned pregnancy is. We really try to be that neutral party to help women make a decision. Women feel so comfortable with us because we’re a complete stranger – we’re here to help them talk through and sort through all their feelings – for real. Everyone agrees that women need help and we’re this safe place where they can explore all their options and get their questions answered.”

It’s a baby. “It’s interesting how we hear about certain laws and language that gets promoted around the topic of pregnancy. Whenever we have a gal come in, every single one of them refers to what is inside them as a baby. No one talks about dealing with the tissue - or whatever. 100% of our clients call it a baby.”

Memory boosting foods

Food

T

he Mediterranean diet is loaded with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil. Together, these foods help improve the health of blood vessels, reducing the risk for a memory-damaging stroke. That’s according to an article by Harvard Medical Health. So, basically, eat healthy food and you’ll probably have good mental health too. For fish, try salmon, herring, and sardines. These are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to lower levels of beta-amyloid proteins in the blood and better vascular health. Here are a few other powerful brain foods. Blueberries have been touted as “brain berries.” In animal studies, eating blueberries significantly improved both the learning capacity and motor skills, making older animals mentally equal to younger animals.

Q. How can I eat healthy and not annihilate my budget? A. Let’s start with produce. Adding fresh fruits and veggies is a big part of eating well. Most nutrition experts push for eating at least five servings each day. Here are three tips to save money on these staples.

Nuts & seeds are good sources of vitamin E which is shown to reduce cognitive decline as we age. Avocado contributes to healthy blood flow and lower blood pressure - both which affect brain health.

Tis the season

Olive oil has been found to protect memory and learning ability as well as safeguard against cognitive decline.

Sizing things up Oatmeal By Oksana Mizina, Shopping woman By LDprod, and Hanging tomatoes By Del Boy/Shutterstock.com

to size things down

A

great step toward downsizing your size is to do a portion patrol. In the U.S. we have gotten so used to super-sized meals we don’t know what a normal serving size is anymore. You’ve probably seen these before, but take a minute to visualize how your plate is sizing up. Size down as needed.

1 tsp serving

For a 1 teaspoon serving of fats [olive oil and vegetable oil], visualize the end of your thumb.

1/4-cup serving

[Ex: nuts and dried fruit] Visualize a large chicken egg.

Q&A

Buy the stuff that’s in season. Fruits and veggies that are in season will be at the best price. Not only does this keep your budget in shape, it also keeps your menu interesting.

Don’t fear frozen

1-cup serving

Often, frozen veggies are just as nutritious as fresh. Watch for sales and you’ll not only save money, you’ll also save prep time as they’re ready to go.

[Ex: Milk, soup, cut-up fruit] Visualize: A baseball

1/2-cup serving [Ex: Ice cream, cooked beans, cooked pasta, cooked rice, a piece of whole fruit] Visualize: A tennis ball

2 Tbsp/1 oz serving [Ex: Peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit, salad dressing] Visualize: A golf ball

3 oz meat serving

Grow your own

Now’s the perfect time to think about having homegrown veggies. Even if you don’t have space for a garden, you can grow herbs, spinach, radishes, beets, and more in containers on your porch, patio, or near a sunny window. A hanging basket works well for growing cherry tomatoes. Better find some friends to share them with.

[Ex: steak, chicken, pork] Visualize: The size and thickness of a deck of cards. Making a hamburger? Visualize a hockey puck. 3 oz of fish is about the length of your checkbook.

2 oz cheese serving For hard cheese, one serving should be the size of 4 dice.

Asparagus has bone-building vitamin K and many antioxidants, including vitamins E, A and C. Each spear has just 4 calories and zero fat or cholesterol. Be adventurous. Asparagus does grow in the wild. The best places to find it is in areas with wet, sandy soil. If you find some never pull it. Instead, cut it as close to the ground as possible.

• Asparagus is one of three vegetables common in North American that comes from a perennial plant (along with artichokes and rhubarb). • It generally takes 3 years from the initial crown planting before you can harvest your asparagus. • Once established, plants can be harvested each spring for 15 years or more. • Once cut, asparagus has a short shelf-life. Only young asparagus is eaten. Once the buds start to open the asparagus becomes woody and unpalatable.
