We have made an extra effort this year to make the festival more customer friendly, by returning back to the preferred layout of the two main marquees being joined together via the entertainment marquee, thus enabling customers to walk all the way round the site. Remember also that the festival is run by members of CAMRA and a few others who are all unpaid volunteers. More than 350 draught real ales will be on offer. This year we have introduced a ’singles bar’ but, before you hot blooded drinkers get too excited this isn’t what it implies. A selection of ales will be available but only one cask of each hence the singles name. When they have gone, they’ve gone! As usual we have a great range of real ciders, bottled beers from overseas and country wines. For the ’taxi’ drivers, a selection of soft drinks are available from the Escape Bar. Somewhere I need to find occasionally! Crisps, ice cream, sweets and cigarettes are on sale here. Feeling peckish? Almost every kind of food from French crepes, pizza, fish and chips, oriental biltong, olives, to burgers, hot dogs, pasties and pies should keep the hunger pangs at bay. Commemorative half pint and pint glasses, lined and bearing the festival logo, will be available to ensure you get a full pint to the line. Please note we have also returned to the system of paying for your glass hire separate from the admission price. You will be given a token to retain. If you wish to get a refund on your glass on leaving the festival you may be asked to produce the token. Please look after

your glass as there are unscrupulous people who ‘collect’ stray glasses and attempt to cash them in. A full program of entertainment is being presented each evening with our grand finalé on Saturday night The Fab Beatles. As our political masters seem still to be hell bent on destroying our beer and pub heritage by continually increasing the taxes on alcohol, to in their eyes alleviate the ’binge drinking’, I draw your attention to one of our most publicised campaigns ever. CAMRA has for many months been drawing up a petition to present to the government asking them to scrap the Duty Escalator on alcohol, and beer in particular. Please, before you leave make a point of signing the petition which will be situated on the Membership/Information stand. Remember this duty escalator is similar to the one introduced some time ago on fuel. Look what happened to that. Every time this increase is implemented your pint goes up by around ten pence more and, will be even more next year if this tax is not changed. Ask any licensee what effect this is having on their beer sales. Our own beer prices this year only reflect on how much we have to pay for the beer that we have ordered from our suppliers. We hope you all enjoy your visit to this years festival and give our hard working staff some credit for doing a good job. If you would like to be a part of this enthusiastic band of volunteers, why not join up at the Membership stand whilst signing our petition. Cheers

FESTIVAL INFORMATION

HAVE FUN AT THE FESTIVAL

W

e all hope that your visit to the Beer Festival this year will be a memorable one. Remember without your support the festival could not take place, and the chance to sample some of the excellent brews on offer would be lost. Please try and imagine the festival marquees as one giant pub. Of course as with all pubs there are certain rules we have to comply with. The times of opening are published in the programme and the marquees are completely non-smoking. Accompanied children are allowed in the bar marquees but please keep them away from the bar serveries. And remember that it is against the law to drink alcohol on site if you are under 18. You will need to buy a glass before you start. If it gets too sticky or you want to change glass sizes just take it back to the glasses counter and exchange it. The Beer Festival serves all beer, cider and wine in oversized glasses with govern-

ment stamped line measured markings to ensure that you, the customer, gets a full measure in your glass. Please be careful if you put your glass down on a table, on the grass or anywhere that it could be knocked over and broken. If such an event does occur please inform a member of staff or security that there is broken glass. On no account attempt to pick up the pieces yourself. We have staff with the proper equipment to retrieve it safely. Do not grind it into the grass! Other events take place on this site after we have finished. Be careful not to leave your glass unattended. Remember – You paid for it! Remember this year you must retain you admission ticket as it required to cash in your glass. To ensure you enjoy the festival at all times we advise you to start off with some light beers, say a mild or low gravity ale, then on to something a bit stronger. Starting off with the strongest beers on the menu means your taste buds get no chance to enjoy the different flavours that the various brews offer. As with any other pub we do have the right to eject any person who we feel is a threat to other customers or our staff. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence. Also remember that, just like other pubs, you are not allowed to drink your own alcohol on site and illegal drugs are totally banned and their use will result in a call to the police. Finally let me remind you of the dedicated staff who are serving you at the festival. Every one of them is an unpaid volunteer, so please be patient at busy times. The person serving you may well have been on duty for the best part of the day, or the whole week and are naturally starting to flag a bit! You can help these people by joining CAMRA and offering to help run the festival. Cheers! Enjoy the Festival Peterborough Beer Festival 2012 07

ENTERTAINMENT LIST

I

t’s that time of year again, so welcome to the Entertainment Listing for the 35th Peterborough Beer Festival 2012. I seem to say this every year, but the fact is that more and more bands are keen to show off their wares at the PBF and unfortunately we have only nine evening slots in which we endeavour to provide an eclectic mix of talented songwriters, along with a couple of your more well known local favourites. I hope something to please everyone.

Amplified

Enough of my ramblings do come along to support and appreciate this impressive range of talent playing on the big Beer Fest stage in a friendly atmosphere with “something for everyone” and a fantastic finale on Saturday night as we close for 2012 with internationally renowned The Fab Beatles.

Once upon a time, not too many years ago, you could listen to any band on the UK rock scene and compare them to a band from the 60s or 70s...but UK rock has now developed its own sound and manifested itself in the form of Columbian Necktie who sound like everything and nothing that has gone before them. www.myspace.com/columbiannecktie

THURSDAY 23RD AUGUST

On Stage Approx 8:45 (2 sets)

On Stage Approx 7:30 The Offshore Rivers are a four piece band from East Anglia. The band were first formed by two friends over a mutual love of music, many nights spent over a record player comparing notes on the likes of The Stones, George Harrison, Gram Parsons, Otis Redding, the Byrds, Captain Beefheart, Jimmy Cliff, Neil Young, the Band...

Peterborough singer songwriter Kerry Devine is accompanied by Kasandra’s Magic Pylon Band Rob White - Bass, Nathan Wieskowski - Keys and Jes Kerr - Drums. Having self-released two EPs ‘Bare Teeth’ and ‘Biscuit and Buttons’ - Kerry and the band are now working on an album due to be released in November 2012. www.kerrydevine.org

Saturday afternoon again sees us open ALL day with live entertainment in the main band marquee throughout the afternoon, do come along and support this predominantly younger talent from around and about the local area. Once again, my sincere thanks to everyone who has contacted me over the last 12 months or so requesting a gig at the Beer Fest. Persistence does work, but please bear in mind that we will only ever have two or three covers/tribute bands a year and good original material will always be the preferred choice.

brantly demanding - and yet playful and amusing - musical delights. If you haven't seen Columbian Necktie I urge you - I implore you to do so at your first opportunity or else leave your life bereft of all the joys they have to offer”.

This talented bunch of lads has been together now for just over a year. In 2011 they started off by playing at the Brewery Tap open mic nights and since then have performed in and around Peterborough. Having built a solid reputation, they have appeared in the local press / magazines and recently entered a nationwide competition where they competed against 10,000 musicians to win a spot at the London O2 and managed to reach as far as the semi finals. Playing a range of music from the 50s to the present day, they are currently writing their own material.

It took over a year from the first spark of inspiration to the actual forming of the band, keen to find the perfect balance of players with a good ear for song and that wide but solid set of influences. The resulting sound is of bittersweet blues and tender soul laden with country guitar, the songs heartfelt and melodious with Dylanesque prose, and layered vocal harmonies. The band is currently working on their first album which they hope to have out later this year. www.myspace.com/theoffshorerivers

Motor City Vipers are an electrifying eight-piece band who lovingly recreate some of the greatest Northern Soul and Motown floor-fillers from the 60s and 70s… from The Temptations, Wilson Pickett and Dobie Gray, to The Supremes, Jackie Wilson and Otis Reading – ‘The Vipers’ do it all! Formed early-2009, Motor City Vipers have quickly gained themselves a reputation as a hugely exciting soul band that are in high demand all year round and we’re very pleased to welcome them to the Beer Festival. www.MotorCityVipers.co.uk The Indigo Kings was formed in early 2011 by the band’s bass player and lyrical mastermind Carl, with nothing but a War & Peace sized catalogue of scribbled words about heartache and desire; and an empty barn with a resident polystyrene alligator. Fast forward to 2012 and the 7 piece band play 1930’s inspired jazz and irresistible swing rhythms, fused with heart aching blues and a sprinkling of vintage pop. Sweet and saucy harmony vocals meet with gritty lyrics to tell stories of interludes between life and love, whilst smooth sax and classic blues guitar are woven together in the melodic haze with jazz piano to create a foot tapping vintage yet modern sound. www.theindigokings.co.uk

HERE’S THE

BEER LIST! Singles Bar At this years Beer Festival we will be having a singles bar, but before you all get too excited, it’s not the kind of singles bar where you can possibly meet someone with a view to developing a deep and meaningful relationship, it’s even better than that. There will be a bar with about 30 one off beers and when they are gone, they are gone. The kind of beers available will vary from 2.5% beers, which may taste very nice but we might struggle to sell 3 firkins of it, up to 10% ales which again will probably taste great but how much of it can we shift? There will also be one offs that certain brewers we have spoken to

LOGO DESIGN COMPETITION

hank you to all who sent in designs for the logo in 2012. Now it’s time to try again. We will need a logo for the 36th Peterborough Beer Festival which opens on 20th August 2013. If you have an artistic bent – or even if you haven’t – hunt out those old wax crayons and have a go.

logo on our website and on posters by the end of April. Send your designs with your name and address to Logo Competition, 205 High Street, Old Fletton, Peterborough, PE2 8DY or to logo@beer-fest.org.uk.

We are offering £200 for the design or idea that we use. The final design will need the words, “Peterborough Beer Festival” and “36th” and will need to include the CAMRA logo. However, if you don’t think that you can do all that then don’t worry. It is the idea that is important. We can always get an artist to create a design using your idea. We are not declaring a closing date since we can’t close the competition until we have a suitable design BUT we would like to start using the

AMRA LocAle is an accreditation scheme to promote pubs that sell locally brewed Real Ales. The Scheme was started in 2007 by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA. Following on their success the Peterborough Branch scheme was created in April 2009. Currently we have 119 pubs and clubs who have joined. Each CAMRA Branch participating in the scheme decides on what they think is an appropriate local distance for their area. Here in Peterborough it was decided to adopt 30 miles as the distance required between Pub or club and Brewery. 42 Peterborough Beer Festival 2012

The idea of the scheme is to promote local pubs who sell local beers, thereby reducing the mileage the beer travels and also helping the local economy and the environment. Here at the Peterborough Beer Festival we have many local breweries beers on sale so have a good look around today and enjoy. Clubs and Pubs joining the scheme must agree to endeavour to ensure that at least one locally brewed real ale is on sale at all times. So next time you visit your local check to see if you think any beers on sale could be locally brewed, if the pub should be in the scheme. Its easy to join and its free. BAR

ast year saw large changes in the Bottle Bar as we introduced 4 fridges. This had the effect of customers being able to see the beers available and also made it easier for staff to locate the beers. This year we continue this theme, we have tried to balance the amount of beers from different countries hence we are able to offer a wider range of beers from Germany, France, Netherlands and the USA. In total we will have 158 beer types available. One to look out for, though in limited quantity, is Engelszell Gregorius this is from a new Trappist Brewery in Austria making it the 8th official Trappist Brewery. From the USA you can drink Stone Brewing Co Oaked Arrogant Bastard or alternatively you could try their Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. As well as these there are a lot of old favourites from Belgium as well as a few new ones that we have not had before. From France we have a range of beers from Brassiere St Germain and from the Netherland’s from Brassiere De Molen. We look forward to seeing you and are happy to advise you as to the beers to try that suit your palette. Take outs are available until 19.30 Tue-Thur and 17.30 Fri-Sat. Details are available from bar staff.

Little Creatures Pale Ale

The beers marked V are those that we have been able to find on the Internet verifying that they do not use isinglass or any other animal product. Those marked O claim also to be organic. Note that many bottles will not fit into a half pint glass and we are unable to let bottles go over the bar. If you have a half pint glass you may want to exchange it for a pint glass or a festival bottle glass.

elcome to the cider and perry bar. As the festival is now back to the old layout I hope that you will not have to walk too far for your cider! All the ciders and perries sold here are ‘real’ in the sense that they consist of nothing but fermented apple and fermented pear juice respectively. Furthermore they are not served chilled, nor are they artificially carbonated or served under gas pressure. This means that the majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the casks. Many of the ciders and perries come from the traditional cider making areas in the West Country where apple and pear varieties are grown specifically for cider / perry making. Where cider is made elsewhere in the country it is usually made from a mixture of cookers and eaters producing what is known as “Eastern Counties” style cider. Since we like to source cider locally where possible we have a good range of these ciders at the festival. The range of styles and flavours is huge, and the bar staff will be happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy. You will find that most real ciders and perries lie in the range 5.5% to 8% A.B.V. simply because that is what a natural fermentation of 100% fruit juice produces. Some of them don’t taste their strength, so beware!

varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label and is labelled in this list with an SV. All the ciders and perries have been tasted prior to the festival and they have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet, again this is on the label. Admittedly this is a bit subjective; please feel free to disagree with us if you wish! Real cider and perry may be clear, hazy or even cloudy, but not “thick” nor containing foreign bodies, hopefully such drinks have been consigned to the past. Any special flavours, e.g. use of oak casks will be noted on the labels. That is more than enough introduction, time to start drinking. Wassail!

We are also selling a range of non-alcoholic apple juices on the bar. Again, these are all 100% juice and are usually produced from a single apple variety; we expect to have Cox, Greensleeves, Discovery, Bramley and others.

Again this year the trade session is being sponsored by Small Beer Ltd of Lincoln. They are able to supply your pub with a vast array of real ales and other products. CHAMPION BEER OF THE FESTIVAL

Many thanks to J D Wetherspoons and their three local pubs, the Drapers Arms , the College Arms and The George at Whittlesey for sponsoring the competition. If you are at the festival on Tuesday, please pick up a form and vote for your favourite beers of the evening. This year we are not asking you to grade the beers into mild, bitter, strong bitter, etc as we know this can be confusing – just tell us the names of the best beers and who brewed them.

he Peterborough Beer Festival is upon us and the choice of ales from around the country is simply staggering. Of course, the beer fest isn’t open all the time so you might want to try a few of our local pubs when we’re all taking a siesta between sessions!

and only find pork scratchings, although it's worth the walk for the nice beer anyway. The beer garden at the rear of the pub backs onto the old course of the river Nene and if you just happen to own a boat and you've brought it with you, you can park it at the bottom of the garden. Phone number 01733 753544

For those of you new to the city and the festival, Peterborough provides a variety of venues in which to drink real ale. From a quiet village pub just 25 minutes walk from the festival to Europe's largest brew pub, from a pub specialising in ales straight from the cask to a 1930's back street boozer known for the quality and variety of its ale. Peterborough has it all! Below is a rundown of some of our favourites We shall divide the pubs into north and south of the river to make direction finding easier. To start with the festival is on the north bank of the Nene. For those of you who carry technology we'll include the postcode so you can navigate easier.

SOUTH OF THE RIVER The Woolpack, North St, Stanground PE2 8HR This is the closest you can get to a village pub in the city. Situated in the ancient village of Stanground just south of the Nene, the Woolpack provides a bit of peace and tranquillity in a mad mad world. The pub will provide 4 beers during the festival which will be Wherry and Landlord with 2 guest ales. The pub is open all day every day. Food is served but times vary so call the pub to find out details. We wouldn't want you to trek half a mile in search of food

Charters, River Nene, PE1 1EH Just south of the river (on the river really) you will find Charters. This large converted grain barge will provide the easiest and most convenient point to try more ales. Although, as it's the closest to the fest it might get a bit busy during 'festival down times'. Usually about a dozen ales on offer with a beer garden and marquee to relax under. The restaurant on the top deck is called East and will cater for those in need of the exotic. Phone number 01733 315700 The Cherry Tree, 9 Oundle Road, PE2 9PB The Cherry Tree is known as one of Peterborough's live music venues and has seen a wealth of talent play here. You will find at least 4 ales on offer, one or two will probably be local ones. Food available - phone for details. Phone number 01733 703495

Swiss Cottage, Grove St, PE2 9AG The ‘Swiss’ is a pub with an Irish flavour but with a difference, in as much as not all the sales are Guinness related. The standard offering is Rooster’s Yankee which is unusual for this area. There are usually at least a couple of handpumps in use and the choice tends towards local ales with Tydd Steam and Digfield being regulars. No food but they’re open all day and they have a pool table. Phone number 01733 568734

tor Ales. Their other beers can include London Pride, Blackfriars and Abbey. Unfortunately the pub is having builders in to rearrange a few things and will be closed until Friday evening of the festival. Normal opening from then on so you can still enjoy the pub all day Saturday. Food until 9.30pm. Phone number 01733 310600

The Palmerston Arms, 82 Oundle Road, PE2 9PA After a short interlude of uncertainty we are pleased to say that the 'Palmy' has now been reinstated as one of the premier real ale pubs in the city. Run by local man, Ian Benton the pub offers a fine array of ales straight from the cask from the cellar. Phone number 01733 565865

The Draper's Arms, 29-31 Cowgate, PE1 1LZ One of the closest pubs to the railway station offering the usual JD Wetherspoons fare. Opens early for breakfast. 01733 847570

Coalheavers Arms, Park St, PE2 9BH The Coalheavers Arms is one of the city's success stories. During the festival the pub will probably have 8 or so beers on, some of which will be by Milton of Cambridge. A super pub with a pleasant beer garden known everywhere for their great beer festivals. One of local CAMRA's favourite pubs which will no doubt be used as the 'Festival Tap' during the building of the festival! No hot food but home made scotch eggs of exotic and unusual varieties on sale. Open Tuesday onwards at midday during the festival. Phone number 01733 565664. The Beehive, 62 Albert Place, PE1 1DD A popular pub known for its excellent food. The 'House' ales here are made by local brewery, Cas-

Ostrich, 17 North Street, PE1 2RA. Superbly refurbished, the Ostrich offers a selection of 5 ales most of which are local to the area. A real cider is also available. Live music is usually on at the weekends and there is a pleasant courtyard in which to enjoy your beer. No food available but worth finding anyway. Pub opens at 11am. Phone number 01733 746370 Wortley Almshouses, Westgate, PE1 1QA. At the top of Westgate you will come to the Wortley Almshouses. Converted in the early 1980's into a pub by Sam Smiths from an old and derelict almshouse. Several years ago it was refurbished and divided into many small and intimate rooms which won it an award. Sam Smiths beers available with the usual competitive prices. Phone number 01733 348839 Brewery Tap, Westgate, PE1 2AA This is the largest brew pub in Europe and is the home of Oakham Ales. Expect Oakham Ales on the bar and many, many others. The pub is famous for its Thai cuisine. Probably the closest pub to the railway station although the Draper’s is probably equally distant. Phone number 01733 358500 .

camra pub heritage group

BRITAIN’S REAL HERITAGE PUBS

H

ow would you describe your ideal British pub? Your response might well feature words like “unspoilt”, “traditional” and “old”. Your pub might be an ancient country inn replete with beams, panelling and inglenook fireplaces. Or perhaps a huge Victorian city pub, all mirrors, mahogany and ornate tiling. Or even a basic back-street boozer of the kind now so hard to find. If you enjoy pubs with characterful historic interiors, then CAMRA’s Pub Heritage Group can help you locate examples all over the country. The Group is dedicated to promoting and preserving pubs whose interiors are of historic or architectural importance. Their work concentrated initially on finding those pub interiors which are nationally precious, either because they are essentially intact from when built or, whilst altered, contain exceptional features or rooms. The number of such pubs is sadly small – less than 300. The Group has gone on to record a second tier of interiors which are less intact or remarkable but still have significant historic or architectural merit – and are therefore also well worth a visit. The easiest way to get information about these “Real Heritage Pubs” (CAMRA's collective name for them) is to visit the website at www.heritagepubs.co.uk where you can search for the 80 Peterborough Beer Festival 2012

pubs on a county-by-county basis. CAMRA has also published books covering several parts of the country, including Scotland, Wales, Yorkshire and London. You may be able to buy these at the Festival products stall or, if not, direct from CAMRA (https://shop.camra.org.uk) Should you wish to contact Pub Heritage Group (perhaps to recommend a pub for inclusion as a Real Heritage Pub or just to seek further information) please e-mail info.pubheritage@camra.org.uk Peterborough Beer Festival 2012 81

FESTIVAL CHARITY

FESTIVAL CHARITY

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. funded what I like to call “OUR” little fleet. The last of these, Peterborough Beer Festival IV, is stationed at Skegness, quite local, so if you are at “Skeggy” any time, feel free to pop in and introduce yourself, they are a friendly bunch and rarely eat people who have donated as generously as you all have. Firstly let me add my own “Welcome to the Beer Festival”. Hopefully the monsoon season is now at an end, and we will have some pleasant picnic weather to enjoy this week. I personally will be drinking my breakfast every morning whilst helping those brave souls testing the quality of the product for your benefit! Yet another thing I volunteer for, and yes, that is burning martyr you can smell! As you are all aware, the organisers here at PBF have allowed us to collect for many years now and your contributions and those from the festival itself have enabled us to purchase and equip no less than 4 inshore lifeboats, 3 “D” class and 1 “Atlantic 85”. With most of the assistance needed in this country being small craft getting into difficulties quite close to shore, swimmers and surfers near rocks, people getting cut off by tides and other sometimes life threatening hazards, the small highly manoeuvrable “D” class can be on the scene within minutes when time is often of the essence. This of course costs money, and it is your donating year on year which has 84 Peterborough Beer Festival 2012

Rescue watercraft £9,000, Inshore rescue boat £9,000, Patrol vehicle £21,000, All-terrain vehicle £5,500. Add to this the cost of training, a hut, clothing, first aid equipment etc. etc. and as you can see, it ain’t cheap! This is why it costs around £385,000 A DAY! to run the RNLI. Watch this Inshore Resc ue Boat space or see the Local CAMRA magazine Beer Around ‘Ere for further news.

on the east coast, somewhere between North Lincs. and Suffolk, so once again trying to keep it local. A typical Lifeguard Station will have one, some or all of the following,

Rescue Watercraft

All Terrain Vehicle

Finally, I wish you all an enjoyable and safe imbibing session or 10, and please pop over for a chat, chuck the kids into the display boat or buy me a beer (We are poor volunteers too you know!) I look forward to seeing you all again this Festival. So,

CHUCK IT IN THE BUCKET!! Martyn Edgar (Press and Box Secretary) RNLI Peterborough.

In the last year, up to May the 14th this year , our little boat at Skeggy has been called out 29 times safely returning 11 people and 6 craft of various types to shore, so please feel free to feel as smug as I do! For more on Skegness Lifeboats, crew etc. go to www.rnliskegness.org.uk/home/. As you may, or indeed may not know, the RNLI is funded entirely by donation. We receive no government money, and our only source of income is the often unbelievable generosity of the public in this country, who, like you, “CHUCK IT IN THE BUCKET!” (A cry which at the time of writing is only 4 weeks away.) I know I have said this before, but the amount of support we, as a very small land-locked branch receive from the patrons of this, the premier event in our City still amazes me. This round of collecting will however not be buying a further “D” class as for once, the RNLI fleet is at full strength (at the time of writing). We are at the moment in discussion with the various agencies to equip a Lifeguard Station (Yes, our volunteers run these as well) hopefully Peterborough Beer Festival 2012 85
