Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association 2023

Hello Beefmaster Exhibitors,

My name is Bennett Janssen and I am serving as the 2022-2023 President of the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA). First off, I would like to thank all of the Beefmaster Breeders who nominated bulls and placed advertisements for this year’s JBBA Promotional and A.I. Program Catalog.

The JBBA A.I. Program offers JBBA members the opportunity to access top-quality genetics at a reduced price. If you are a current JBBA member, I encourage you to look closely at the bulls offered in the 2023 JBBA A.I. Program and find those bulls that best compliment your females. It doesn’t matter whether you own one heifer or have a small herd; as a JBBA member you have an amazing opportunity to use some of the best bulls our breed has to offer at a cost that is beyond reasonable. As JBBA members, we are lucky to be a part of the Beefmaster family, where breeders want juniors to have the ability to succeed in the registered cattle business.

We invite everyone to the 2023 JBBA National Show and Convention. It will be going back to the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas.

This will be my eleventh year to attend our Junior National Show and Convention. Speaking from experience there’s not a better place to be during the third week of July. I strongly encourage every Beefmaster exhibitor and breeder to take the trip and come join up with the rest of the Beefmaster family in Belton this July 15-20, 2023.

JBBA A.I. Program Rules

1.JBBA members may contact BBU members from March 1 - May 1, 2023 and purchase semen on bulls nominated from BBU breeders at a cost of $25 per straw of semen.

2.BBU members (owner of nominated bull) are allowed to limit the number of straws of semen a JBBA member is allowed to purchase on each bull.

3.If a breeder limits the number of straws of semen they are willing to sell to JBBA members on a particular bull, once that number of straws are sold, the breeder does not have to sell any more semen to a JBBA member at a discounted rate of $25/straw.

4.Enclosed is a list of nominated bulls by BBU members for the JBBA A.I. Program.

5.Semen purchased through the JBBA A.I. Program by junior members is intended for the sole use of the purchasing junior only. It is NOT intended to be transferred to JBBA or BBU members, including family.

6.BBU members are responsible for releasing semen to JBBA members once payment has been received and sending in an A.I. Transfer Spreadsheet to the BBU office.

7.JBBA members are responsible for all freight costs associated with the semen.

8.Breeders will need to turn in an A.I. Transfer Spreadsheet to the BBU Office by June 1st for each bull that is nominated with each JBBA member’s information.

The Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association A.I. Program allows junior members to purchase high quality Beefmaster genetics at an affordable cost while improving and building their Beefmaster herd. Ultimately, it helps up and coming breeders market the Beefmaster breed in and out of the show ring, while also educating junior members about genetics, EPDs, sire selection traits, networking amongst breeders, etc.

JBBA A.I. Program nominated bulls are listed on pages 30 - 51 of this book. We encourage all JBBA members to contact the breeders that are offering discounted semen for sale on nominated bulls and visit with them about their bull’s performance, EPDs, calf crops, disposition, etc.

We appreciate the generous and loyal support of the BBU breeders that are participating in the JBBA A.I. Program.

This EPD indicates likely genetic differences between sires in progeny birth weights. The lower the BW EPD = lighter expected BW.

This EPD adjusts to a 205 day weight that indicates genetic differences between sires in the growth of their progeny to weaning.

This EPD adjusts to a 365 day weight that indicates genetics differences between sires in progeny growth potential through to market age.

This EPD reflects extra calf weight that is due to the genetic influence a sire has on his daughters’ milking and mothering ability.

Total Maternal is a prediction of total contributions of a sire’s daughter to calf performance.

This EPD is presented as the percent unassisted births a daughter will have over the population average.

Scrotal size EPDs indicate likely genetic differences between sires in the fertility of their male progeny.

REA EPDs indicate genetic differences between sires in ribeye area as measured in progeny at scanning age.

This EPD indicates genetic differences between sires in marbling as measured in progeny at scanning age.

This EPD indicates genetic differences between sires in rib fat as measured in progeny at scanning age.

Stayability is defined as the probability a female would be reported as calving in the herd at age 5 or greater.

Age at First Calf is defined as the difference between a cow’s birthdate and the birthdate of her first calf.

$T is a combination of WWT, YWT, REA and IMF EPDs. These traits accurately tell us about the growth and carcass merit of that animal.

$M accounts for WWT, YWT, Milk and SC. $M is the $ profit per cow exposed due to calf WW accounting for cow maintenance costs.

JBBA is ready!

Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA), whose parent group is Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU), is one of the fastest-growing junior beef breed associations in the country, and for a good reason! JBBA members gain valuable knowledge about every phase of the cattle business and become better prepared to contribute to the beef industry and agribusiness as adults. JBBA was founded in 1984, as more and more young cattlemen became involved in the Beefmaster breed. Its membership has increased steadily and the number of programs JBBA offers to its members has grown significantly. JBBA is moving with the Beefmaster breed to the forefront of the beef cattle industry.

JBBA’s Purpose:

• to continue the improvement of Beefmaster cattle nationwide;

• to promote the six essential characteristics upon which the breed has been developed: Disposition, Fertility,Weight, Conformation, Hardiness, and Milking Ability;

• to improve and develop the capabilities of youth, both individually and through group participation, in breeding, raising and promoting Beefmaster cattle;

• to develop and improve scholarship, leadership and community interest among young cattlemen;

• to acquaint its members with the structure and function of Beefmaster Breeders United.

Many JBBA members aspire to continue their education at the collegiate level and thanks to the JBBA Scholarship Program, some of them are able to receive financial assistance towards their college tuition. The JBBA Scholarships are awarded annually on the basis of involvement in JBBA, FFA and/or 4-H leaders, and/or other adults who are familiar with the member’s work.

Registered Account Name/Membership Name: *Mandatory Field* (NOTE: Membership Name is permanent; change is limited/restricted.) This is the name that determines your placement in the membership directory and this is used to sort memberships in alphabetical order by last name. This name prints on certificates.

I (We) hereby make application for the Prefix Name:

*Mandatory Field* and will apply this Prefix Name, if accepted, to BEEFMASTER cattle of which I am (we are) the breeder and/or first owner. I (We) agree to notify BBU annually, with payment of dues, as to whether I am (we are) still breeding BEEFMASTERS and using this Prefix Name. If I (we) do not so notify BBU, I (we) authorize BBU to discontinue my (our) use of this Prefix Name. (does not apply to Lifetime) A Unique name in the system. Many members use their ranch name (A C FARMS). You may choose to use your membership name. Both the Membership Name and Prefix Name will print on the certificates. This can be up to 25 characters long, including spaces and Prefix Name is permanent; change is limited/restricted.

I (We) hereby make application for the Animal ID Prefix: *Mandatory Field* and will apply this Animal ID Prefix, if accepted, to BEEFMASTER cattle of which I am (we are) the breeder and/or first owner. I (We) agree to notify BBU annually, with payment of dues, as to whether I am (we are) still breeding BEEFMASTERS and using this Animal ID Prefix. If I (we) do not so notify BBU, I (we) authorize BBU to discontinue my (our) use of this Animal ID Prefix (does not apply to Lifetime) This prefix must be a minimum of two (2) characters and up to a maximum of eight (8) characters (including spaces). Your Animal ID Prefix can only be a combination of letters and/or numbers, symbols or punctuation are NOT allowed. T he Animal ID Prefix will always be associated with an animal’s name, regardless of a name change. The Animal ID Pre fix will be unique to each membership. EXAMPLE: CRO
