ED ITOR'S E YE

.......................................................................................................................................... Hello and welcome to this our SPIRIT issue and (big drum roll) our special celebration of NINE years of BED SUPPERCLUB. As usual we’ve been as busy as banshees on All Hallow’s Eve getting together another crammed issue with views, news and things that we’re just aching to share with you. I caught up with rock god Yoshiki from X JAPAN in Tokyo moments after their Summer Sonic show and asked him about their upcoming Bangkok gig.

Body / Boyzilian / Brazilian WAXING

For our ‘Artificial Eye’ feature we were in seventh heaven when the man behind the very fabulous ‘Very Thai’ book, Philip CornwelSmith, agreed to give us some spirit snaps from his forthcoming book. Plus concierge of cool, Dope Singapore gave us their take on the hippest spirits and souls around. We also asked the cream of Bangkok’s fashion elite for their take on the dress code for Bed’s 9th Anniversary party. Plus we're going to give you 36 hours in New Orleans, the recipe for some delish pumpkin cornbread and a wicked voodoo potion and we’ve also got the buzz on the some of the essential events that Bed Suppperclub has lined over the next two months. I’m gonna leave you with a quote from Albert Einstein, which is always worth remembering: ‘Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.’

COVER STORY BED SUPPERCLUB: A QUICK LOOK IN THE REARVIEW…

9 years on the beat and going strong

NOT MANY VENUES IN BANGKOK have been around long enough to witness the transition from vinyl records to today’s predominantly digital music scene and are still partying strong. Nor were many restaurants serving molecular cuisine before it became the ‘norm’ it is currently and have now moved to the next thing. In 2003 our DJ Nigel one of the first to get Bangkok crowds jumping to hip hop and also the very same year we opened our REHAB night the first to play electro and nine years later is still Bangkok’s longest running theme night. So what makes Bed Supperclub different from the rest? Is it the strange, yet alluring architecture? Is it the friendly service that's always met with a smile? Or is it because some of the same cooks and DJs that have been with us since day one are still working with us? Let’s take a moment to rewind and find out. Well in the culinary world we were among the first in town to work with

liquid nitrogen in our kitchen, introducing “molecular gastronomy” techniques in 2005 with Chef Paul Hutt and to apply the “sous-vide” cooking method to our best-imported meats. One of our most memorable dishes was inspired by the medieval “cockatrice” where we bound different parts of a cow together, to create a very different cut of meat, using transglutaminase, a special enzyme that binds meat together – naturally of course. Musically speaking, one of the greatest live acts to hit our shores (and this is debatable) was legendary jazz drummer Billy Cobham in 2006, where he and his five member band (including a percussionist who played an instrument made out of 100 door keys) delighted, inspired and “raised the bar,” so to speak, on the quality of sound produced and performed. Some jazz aficionados in town are still biting their nails for having missed that gig.

COVER STORY (CONT.)

Then there was Laurent Garnier, the pioneering French DJ whose electronic sounds transfixed us for the night and still holds a vibrant memory in our hearts. He still to this day holds the record for being the only international guest DJ who personally requested to play four hours in a row, kicking off with some down-tempo lounge and ending the night by rocking the house with his infectious beats.

painted in white and gold camouflage. We enjoyed watching our guests working with the massive presence of the tank by using it hold their drinks or as a podium to dance on.

In the Bed world of art, where else in Bangkok would Sofia Coppola’s buddy, street artist André tag his eponymous “MR. A” character – if not, on the walls of the parking lot of Bed Supperclub? That was the first time street art appeared at Bed and we were not only proud of it, but a little flattered to have some really cool cats to hang out with us.

So many memorable nights and memories flood to mind, and for those of you that shared the special moments with us, we hope that they hold a special place in your partying hearts like they do in ours.

For our 5th anniversary, to mark the 1st year (on the day) of the bloodless coup d’état, we installed a mock army tank

And who can forget our 7th year anniversary, where we had seven Thai midgets dressed in white almost steal the show from a beautiful Snow White singer.

TRAVEL

..........................................................................................................................................

36 HOURS IN NEW ORLEANS

What other city-after being half-drowned and left to starve, foiled by bureaucracy and attacked by the auto-immune disease of rampant crime-could stagger to its feet to welcome visitors with a platter of oysters on the half shell and a rousing brass band? What place, barely two years after Hurricane Katrina, could provide streetcar rides and impromptu parades, riverboat calliopes and sidewalk tap dancers?

8 p.m. - JAZZ AND BOOKS The French settlers of New Orleans might have been resigned to Spanish rule, but not to the Spanish governor, They did not like him, his wife or his Catalonian wine. In 1768, they staged a revolt, ran him out of town and had a street named after them for their trouble: Frenchmen Street. Today, the street stands in happy rebellion against another takeover: the tourist swarm in the French Quarter, just on the other side of Esplanade. On Frenchmen, you can hear good music and meet local people, both of which spill out of the clubs and into the streets. Those in the mood for serious jazz can pay $15 to $35 (depending on the act) at Snug Harbor (626 Frenchmen www.snugjazz. com.) When your ears need a rest, stop in at Faubourg Marigny Art & Books (600 Frenchmen; 504-947-3700), where you can find books about New Orleans, gay and lesbian literature, postcards and the lowdown on the town from Otis Fennell, the owner, who stays open “as late as it takes.”

9 a.m. - SURVEY THE DAMAGE “How bad is it?” everyone will ask when you return. Prepare your answer on the Gray Line Katrina Tour, which begins at the kiosk on the river side of Jax Brewery in the French Quarter (www.graylineneworleans.com) explains how the levees were breached. The tour is popular; reservations are necessary. If three hours on a bus is too much, find one of the many cab drivers with a tour guide licence and negotiate a shorter trip.

12:30 p.m. - NAVIGATION

5 p.m. - DRINKS ON THE PORCH New Orleans is a state of mind, one acquired most efficiently with an afternoon cocktail. At the bar of the Columns (3811 St. Charles Ave.; 504-899-9308), an Italianate mansion-turned hotel in the Garden District, what must be the South’s most inviting porch flirts with the city’s grandest thoroughfare. Have a Campari and soda alfresco ($7) or step into the bar, with its ornately painted 16-foot ceiling and a circular settee. Both over-the-top and the tiniest bit down at the heels, the Columns was the perfect backdrop for “Pretty Baby,” Louis Malle’s movie about a turn-of-the-century brothel, even though it is a world away from the former red-light district it was meant to evoke.

22

In the Crescent City, so-called because of the river’s snaky pinch, there is no north, south, east and west. You can go toward the lake, toward the river, upriver or downriver. So, from the bus kiosk stroll through Jackson Square, which looks to this day like a Mary Poppins movie set. That’s toward the lake. Go all the way to Rampart Street and turn right. That’s downriver. Cross Esplanade, continue one block and enter the bright orange convenience store. That’s heaven. Order the shrimp po-boy on French bread and join all the other people, some still in their bedroom slippers, (Rampart Street Food Store; 1700 North Rampart St).

2 p.m. - THE REAL STORY You are now at the juncture of three neighbourhoods: the Faubourg Marigny, the Quarter and the Treme, a historically black part of town where generations of the city’s musicians grew up and learned to play. Much of that history, plus other largely African-American New Orleans traditions like skeleton gangs, jazz parades and the Mardi Gras Indians with their handmade, proto-Vegas costumes have been lovingly collected by Sylvester Francis at the Backstreet Cultural Museum (1116 St. Claude Ave).

23

3:30 p.m. - POTIONS AND SCENTS The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum (514 Chartres St.; 504565-8027; www.pharmacymuseum.org) might sound a bit dry, but this 1823 town house is like a concentrated version of the city itself, with exhibits on not only apothecary supplies and soda fountains, but also hangover remedies, voodoo potions, absinthe, opium and “questionable medical practices.” You can also get some good souvenir ideas: a “rare and intoxicating tobacco” called perique, grown only in a small tract of land in one parish in Louisiana, is available at the nearby Cigar Factory for $10 a jar (415 Decatur St.; 504-568-1003). Vetivert, an earthy scent the museum says was favoured by Creole women, can be purchased around the corner at Hove Parfumeur, as a perfume, soap or simply bundles of root, 3 for $10 www.hoveparfumeur. com).

9 p.m. - THE PLAY LIST Ask New Orleanians about the night’s music offerings and chances are they’ll rattle them off from memory (if not, pick up a free copy of Offbeat magazine).

6 p.m. - LOCAL FARE For every Emeril’s, Antoine’s or Brennan’s in this city of fine dining, there is a beloved neighbourhood restaurant where locals will wait hours for a table. At Dick and Jenny’s (www.dickandjennys. com), in a rambling Uptown barge-board cottage, the dishes include savoury crawfish and andouille cheesecake, pecan-crusted veal sweetbreads and salmon with Gewurztraminer beurre blanc They don’t take reservations, so settle in on a porch glider with a cocktail and wait.

24

Sunday - 10 a.m. - AMBITION The thing to love about Elizabeth’s is that somebody there tried to make bacon better. The result is praline bacon a combination of pecan candy and salty pork. The homely little restaurant in the shadow of the Mississippi River levee is on its second owner since Katrina, but has retained its old chef, Bryon Peck, and much of its old menu: classic grits and grillades and fried chicken livers with pepper jelly (www.elizabeths-restaurant.com).

1 p.m. - FOLLOW THE MUSIC New Orleans is a tribal place, made up of Mardi Gras Indian tribes and krewes, and groups known as Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, originally formed to provide burial insurance. Now the clubs not only provide jazz funerals, they also mount their own parades, known as second lines, that pass through the city’s neighbourhoods often from bar to bar on Sunday afternoons. The Nine Times, the Original Four, the Mahogany Ladies; those are but a few of the clubs that try to one-up one another with colour-coded haberdashery and the city’s best brass bands.

THE HOTEL CHA AM Love is in the air and everywhere at this striking yet intimate vacation experience. Designed by renowned Asian architect Duangrit Bunnag, The Hotel Cha Am (formerly the Alila) was the first designer resort to be built in this sleepy seaside town.

Where is it?

The Hotel Cha Am is situated on the Petchaburi beach side in Cha Am, 26 kilometres north of Hua Hin, and 163 kilometres south of Bangkok. About two hour.s from Bangkok by car; the train trip takes around three hours.

How’s the restaurant?

The resort has two first-rate restaurants. Motion serves a fantastic breakfast buffet and fine lunches; the charred rare ahi tuna nicoise with new potatoes, vine tomato, anchovy fillets a boiled egg and crispy string beans is a steal at 240 Baht. While upstairs the Clouds loft is the perfect place to watch the sun set while So tell us more about the rooms. sipping a glass or two of fine wine and then To complement its distinct décor, this stunning indulge in a sumptuous evening meal. We five-star hotel resort boasts 72 rooms some opted for Moroccan lamb shank tajine, braised of which have private outdoor space and all of with cinnamon, saffron, garlic and cumin., on a which have state of the art in-room entertain- bed of Berber-style couscous (720 baht) with a ment : iPod docking stations, massive flat side of crushed potatoes, scented with truffles screen TVs, mood lighting. Bathrooms have (200 baht). both stand alone tubs and rainfall showers.

What’s in the neighbourhood?

Not suitable for:

So tell me again, why should I stay here?

If I want to book now where do I go ?

Nearby attractions include a number of interesting temples plus the Summer Palace of King Rama VI, while golfers can get their fix at the Palm Hills Golf Resort. Hua Hin with its excellent seafood restaurants and fantastic shopping centres is a short drive away. The copious use of light and space adds to the serene ambience and the rustic charm which is juxtaposed against the bold uncompromising contemporary design. If you are seeking sun, style and solitude make this your one and only stop!

The only drawback we encountered was the disappointingly decked out fitness room but we were told that’s going to be getting an upgrade in the near future, plus the hotel grounds have spacious lawns that are ideal for a jog or game of footy. Agoda.com

INTERVIEW

[ by Pa u l Bee Ha mp sh i re ]

..........................................................................................................................................

X JAPAN ’s main man Yoshiki breezed into the backstage area at Tokyo’s Summer Sonic Festival shielded by his anxious army of aides-de-camp; body guards, make-up artists, personal assistants and of course the blonde pair of Caucasian teenage models that are constantly on his heels like two pouting puppies. His calm unruffled demeanor gave no hint that less than an hour ago he’d been baring his soul onstage consumed by a myriad of emotions. One moment he was manically beating his drums the next sobbing as he poured his heart out over a grand piano, together with his band he took the 60,000- strong crowd of spellbound fans through a rock n rollercoaster show that climaxed in a state of rapture. With a sold Bangkok show scheduled for later this month I asked him if we could expect a similar performance here.

TODAY’S SHOW WAS A CONDENSED VERSION OF WHAT THE THAI AUDIENCE WILL GET AS WE PLAYED A RELATIVELY A SHORT SET TODAY. WHEN WE PLAY BANGKOK IT’S GOING TO BE THE FULL SHOW. SO WE’LL BE PERFORMING A LOT MORE OLD SONGS AS WELL AS THE NEW ONES THAT WE’VE JUST COMPOSED.” The new songs have been getting a rave reaction at their shows. “Its great that fans seem to rock out to the new songs as much as the old favorites.” One song amongst the new ones that they performed at the summer Sonic that really stood out was ‘Born to be free’, I wondered if Yoshiki had any favourites? “oh that’s such a difficult question, all our songs are like my children, please don’t ask me choose one it would be so difficult” He then grinned like a proud parent and added “but yes that one does rock!” Sugizo from one of Japan’s other legendary bands, Luna Sea, has now joined as their full time guitarist (although he will still continue with Luna Sea and keep on doing his solo projects). Sugizo replaces HIDE who died tragically in 1998. Although his death was recorded as a suicide, he was found hanged with a towel tied to a doorknob, many also believe the auto-strangulation to have been an accident as HIDE often practised a technique to relieve upper back and neck pains which involved the use of a cloth tied to door handle.

“SUGIZO WAS THE NATURAL CHOICE FOR US AS WE KNOW HIM SO WELL PERSONALLY AND HE’S ALSO A GIFTED MUSICIAN, PLUS HIS VIOLIN PLAYING IS MAGNIFICENT” ....................................................................................... X JAPAN

DESIGN ICON

THE EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR & OTTOMAN LIMITED ALL BLACK ASIA EDITION BY SANYA SOUVANNA PHOUMA

I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO WRITE about the Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman ever since the Design Icon section of Bed Sheets has been featured as a regular column. This issue being also a “9 Year” anniversary issue provides a beautiful opportunity to do so. The Eames Lounge chair has very sentimental value for me as I have inherited one from my family. It was probably an edition made in the sixties or the seventies. That means it has at least 30 years of patina. It has exactly what Charles Eames had in mind when he first designed it: the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt. The chair is a perfection of technology and craftsmanship. It is as comfortable as it looks and that is why it is truly modern. The design emphasizes its function: the seat is permanently tilted at a 15 -degree angle to take the weight off your lower spine. The chair has six-inch-thick urethane foam cushions, a magic mix of strength and softness. The ottoman allows you to restore your normal blood circulation (by resting your feet horizontally). It is just so relaxing and also kind of thrilling so you feel like Captain Kirk at the same time. Being an original edition, my ‘Eames chair’ is made with Brazilian rosewood, which today has become an endangered wood. Herman Miller, the brand that produces the chair, stopped using it at the end of the 90’s. Owning such an original piece, that gets more

beautiful with the years, I have never been seduced by the new editions that look too brand new. Well, that was until I saw this ‘Limited all black Asia edition’. Immediately, that ‘nouveau riche’ feeling that was so annoying with the new editions did not seem to bother me anymore. Maybe because the shells do not have any wood veins and look like armor. In other words it looks like a Christopher Nolan ‘Bruce Wayne chair.’ The good people at Herman Miller also came up with the idea of providing a framed and numbered limited edition picture of the design. Only a100 chairs were made for this very limited edition.

Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was that it be "a special refuge from the strains of modern living."

ART | performance “A LOVE SONG” a contemporary dance theatre inspired by Jean Genet's film and poetry Words by Jitti Chompee.

Jean Genet’s art reveals and celebrates our common humanity, which he suggests bears the seeds of connection on a multitude of levels. "A Love Song" is my interpretation of his work in a contemporary dance and theatrical form. I chose "Un Chant d'Amour and Le Funambule" to illustrate how as an artist I find myself walking on tightrope even though could fall at any time. "Un Chant d'Amour" is a beautiful silent film in which Genet communicates through visual language and ignores traditional plots and psychology; Genet's plays rely heavily on ritual, transformation, illusion and interchangeable identities. His experiences in prison informed much of his work. The homosexuals, prostitutes, thieves and outcasts in his plays are all trapped in 42

self-destructive circles. "Le Funambule" (The tightrope walker), an ode to artists in general, written in 1955 (Poésie/Gallimard NRF,1955), which explores not only the loneliness and solitude of an artist, but also serves as a poetic meditation on Genet's passionate love for the 19 year old tightrope walker, Abdallah Bentaga. Venue: PT GALLERY and WARP STUDIO 54 Soi 30 Charoen Krung road, Bangkok Dates: Thursday Saturday Sunday Saturday Sunday

What line of work are you in? PR & Media relations at Agoda.com - one of the most famous hotel online reservation sites in Asia. What’s your favourite noise? Bed’s Bar on Saturday night around midnight (sue me if I like house music). What’s your least favourite noise? Children crying and angry people yelling. What would you change if we gave you the chance to change anything? I’d change the attitude of Thai taxi drivers who get choosy about where they want to drive customers to in front of Bed some nights! What turns you on creatively? A great fashion show and ‘Circuit Party’. If you could dine at Bed with two celebrities who would they be? Tom Ford and Ryan Renolds. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Thai food, of course. If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be? Think, Speak and Do Good. How would you describe your best night out in three words? Always be myself. What’s Thailand’s best kept secret? ALL ABOUT BED

I heard that you changed your menu – is this true? It is. For the past eight and a half years, Sun-Thurs, we offered a three-course set menu. As of February, 2011, we now offer a menu that is no longer restricted by a set, but is much more flexible (a la carte) to give our guests greater freedom when ordering. We also offer half sizes and the kitchen is open longer.

Frequently Asked Questions by Bed GM, Justin Dunne

..........................................................................................................................................

How do you describe the food at Bed? Modern eclectic cuisine. I would like to buy some Bed merchandise, Do you have anything I can buy? We do. Tons. We sell several T-shirts, CDs, books, umbrellas, champagne flutes, shot glasses, and more. Please ask any staff to assist. Does Bed have any mobile apps? We do. We have both a Bed Supperclub app as well as a Bed Sheets app. Both are available from iTunes. Enjoy! Justin Dunne

I didn’t know that you guys had a restaurant – I thought that you were only a club. Yup, nine years later and this is still the biggest misconception about us. Since we opened in 2002, we’ve always had the restaurant but, it often unfortunately, stands in the shadow of the bar/club. In an on-going effort to push the restaurant’s visibility, we are offering more special dinners (wine dinners, tequila weekend dinners, etc).

Why are your wines so damn expensive? Yes, this is very unfortunate. Due to the 400% tax on both foreign and local wines (geared in part to protect the consumption of local Thai beverages), our prices are forced to reflect this tragedy.

How’s business? Good. Very good. We’ve been very blessed. Yes, Thailand has had some rough challenges in the past few years, but we have been very fortunate What time do you close? to miss the most brutal parts of these challenges. On most nights, we are open until 2 am. However, We chalk this up to a great loyalty base of guests with local approval, our busier nights usually remain and our own willingness to invest in creativity and open until 3 am (at least at the time of this printing). changing the themes often. My taxi driver took us to Soi 26 rather than Bed looks better – did you renovate? here to Soi 11. What’s up with that? We haven’t done a full renovation but in July we Because our address is actually “26, Soi Sukhumvit painted the entire exterior of the venue. 11,” many drivers/concierges incorrectly read the address and believe that we are on Soi 26 rather than Soi 11 – a difference of about one hour in traffic. Frustrating indeed. We always make sure that the concierges around town have the Bed Supperclub map. 94

Why do I need an ID? Why are you so strict? From the Foreign and Commonwealth website here in Thailand: "By law, you must carry your passport with you at all times in Thailand. Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport." Although this is rare, because we are a very high-profile venue, the local authorities do keep a very close eye on us. Thus, we ask all guests to carry an official, government-issued ID – a good copy of your passport is fine. How do I receive a Bed World card? Our Bed World card is given to guests, strictly through word of mouth, that have shown incredible loyalty over the years. As of late, we are granting Bed World cards only to guests that are repeat diners in the restaurant. May I book a hen's party, birthday party, office party at Bed? Yes, of course. We offer attractive party packages. For more information, please contact junior@bedsupperclub.com or orawan@bedsupperclub.com 95
