BONIEK! 1982-2012 Cuando al principio de los años 90 el Estadio del 10º Aniversario de Varsovia cayó en ruinas, empezó su otra vida, su “historia paralela”. Ese Estadio X (lugar teóricamente inexistente) podría dar lugar a diferentes lecturas, a menudo contradictorias: podría verse como un suburbio asiático, como una jungla salvaje, como ejemplo de autogobierno o como fenómeno de emergencia urbana. También como un club deportivo en decadencia, como una imagen ruinosa de la arquitectura del realismo socialista, como un campo de trabajo para los arqueólogos y botánicos o sede de un grupo de los testigos de Jehová, entre otras. La peculiar lógica de ese lugar, su heterogeneidad, su prolongada (in)existencia en medio de la ciudad postcomunista, la invisibilidad de la sociedad vietnamita, el debate sobre la construcción del nuevo Estadio Nacional y la intención de borrar de la superficie la mole del Estadio X, junto con la urgente necesidad de organizar la Eurocopa 2012 y la falta de debate acerca del patrimonio de la posguerra, es lo que nos sirvió de impulso para abordar el proyecto artístico de la Clausura del Estadio del 10º Aniversario que llevé a cabo en los años 2007-2009. Los proyectos que lo formaban: Viaje a Asia: un paseo acústico por el sector vietnamita del Estadio del 10º Aniversario, de 2006, así como la serie de seis acciones realizadas durante la temporada 2007/2008 (¡Boniek!, Investigación, Liquidación del Bazar Europa, Radio Estadio emite, A garrotazos y Schengen) supusieron exploraciones subjetivas de aquella “otra realidad” del Estadio, realizadas por artistas, deportistas y activistas. Esa serie de situaciones, de carácter interactivo y quasi-documental (paseos, un partido, la estación local de radiodifusión, un espectáculo en el terreno de las obras, una exposición con la participación de los habitantes), han supuesto un paso de gigantes para el Estadio Nacional que emergió sobre el mismo solar. Paradójicamente, la estructura en forma de cesta de este nuevo estadio, con sus colores rojo y blanco de la bandera polaca, parece querer finalmente dejar claro a todos aquellos inmigrantes que durante 10 años crearon uno de los espacios culturalmente y urbanísticamente más interesantes de la ciudad, quién es el que manda… Joanna Warsza Comisaria de los proyectos de espacio público, Co-comisaria de la 7º Berlín-Biennale

BONIEK! 1982-2012 When the Tenth Anniversary Stadium in Warsaw fell into a state of disrepair in the early 1990s, its ‘other, parallel history’ began. This Stadium X – a place that theoretically was no longer there, came to be perceived in various, often contradictory ways: as an Asian suburb, wild woods, an example of self-organization and urban emergence, a collapsing sports club, a ruin of soc-realist architecture, an archaeological dig and botanical research camp, a seat of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and many others. The changing logic of this place, its heterogeneity, historical presence/absence in the middle of a post-communist city, the invisibility of the Vietnamese minority, the debate about the construction of the new National Stadium and the liquidation of the Tenth-Anniversary Stadium, the urgent need to organize the Euro 2012 Championship and the lack of discussion about the post-war heritage provided the impulse to curate the project Farewell to the 10th Anniversary Stadium, which I carried out in the Stadium from 2007-2009. It comprised the following projects: Travel to Asia – An Audio Walk through the Vietnamese Sector of the 10th Anniversary Stadium from 2006 and a series of initiatives from the 2007/8 season (Boniek!, Site Inspection, The Liquidation of the Europa Flea Market, Stadium Radio Broadcasts, Laying Deep Foundations and Schengen), which were artists’, athletes’ and activists’ personal explorations of the reality of the ‘second’ Stadium. This series of situations with a participatory and paradocumentary character (walks, a match, a Sunday radio broadcast, a show at the building site, an exhibition with the participation of the citizens) constituted a milestone in the construction of the National Stadium, which was erected on top of the old one. It seems as though its red-and-white basket wants to finally send a clear message to all the immigrants, who over a period of 10 years had created one of the most interesting cultural and urban areas in the city – about who rules here. EPISODIO 1: BONIEK! Sobre el proyecto:

El sábado 14 de octubre del año 2007, en el abandonado Estadio del 10º Aniversario en Varsovia, el artista suizo, Massimo Furlan, reconstruyó en solitario el partido Polonia-Bélgica (3:0) con el que la selección polaca ganó en Barcelona el tercer puesto en el Campeonato Mundial de Fútbol. El artista recreó la coreografía el jugador clave del equipo polaco, Zbigniew Boniek. El partido fue comentado “en vivo” por el famoso locutor deportivo polaco, Tomasz Zimoch, y retransmitido por la emisora local de Varsovia, Radio Kampus. Massimo Furlan eligió dicho encuentro como uno de los más atractivos, desde el punto de vista dramático, de toda la historia de la Selección de Polonia. Furlan encarnó al jugador Boniek con 41 años, es decir, a la edad a la que los futbolistas suelen jubilarse. Cuando era niño, como otros muchos chicos, soñaba con ser un gran futbolista; recreaba en la soledad de su habitación las jugadas más famosas y él mismo las comentaba. Durante muchos años esperaba que el seleccionador suizo le hiciera una oferta. Y como eso nunca ocurrió, decidió convertirse en una estrella de fútbol por su propia cuenta. Le entusiasmó especialmente el Campeonato Mundial de España de 1982. En 2002, se puso una camiseta con el número ficticio 23 y reconstruyó en solitario, en el estadio Pontaise de Lausana, la final del campeonato: el partido Italia - República Federal de Alemania. En agosto de 2006, en el estadio parisiense Parque de los príncipes, encarnó a Michele Platini en las semifinales de Barcelona: en el partido entre Francia y Alemania, tan trágico para los franceses. En 2007 en Varsovia Massimo Furlan se convirtió en Boniek. ¡Acción Boniek! formaba parte de la serie de performances que acompañaban la Clausura del Estadio del 10º Aniversario y del “Jarmark”, el mayor bazar de Europa que en aquel entonces albergaba el recinto. El estadio, construido con los escombros de la destruida ciudad de Varsovia, fue inaugurado en 1955, para “gloria” del comunismo. En los años 80 dejó de funcionar como recinto deportivo y comenzó su decadencia. A principios de los años 90 fue “reanimado” por los comerciantes internacionales, pioneros del capitalismo, que instalaron en el interior del estadio sus catres de tijera con todo tipo de mercancía, creando una verdadera ciudad dentro de la ciudad. En 2007 el estadio se revelaba como un fenómeno chocante para los varsovianos: en el centro de la capital se levantaba la espectacular ruina de un recinto deportivo, como si fuese un monumento antiguo, y a su alrededor se extendía una ciudad vietnamita. Hoy, el estadio ya no existe. En su lugar se encuentra un recinto deportivo moderno construido especialmente para la Eurocopa 2012.

On Saturday, 14 October 2007, the Swiss artist Massimo Furlan performed a one-man reconstruction of the Poland-Belgium match (3: 0) in the dilapidated Tenth Anniversary Stadium in Warsaw. That match had secured the Polish team third place in the 1982 Football World Cup in Barcelona. The artist repeated the choreography of the key footballer of the Polish national team – Zbigniew Boniek. The match was related “live” by the well-known Polish sports commentator - Tomasz Zimoch and transmitted by the local Warsaw station Radio Kampus. Artist selected that match as it was one of the most attractive, theatrical matches in the history of the Polish team. Furlan was 41 when he enacted the role of Boniek. He was therefore at an age when the average footballer is on the verge of retirement. In his childhood, like many boys, he dreamed of a great sporting career and would reconstruct famous matches in his bedroom and comment on them. For many years, he subconsciously hoped that the Swiss team manager would call him with a proposition. As that never happened, Furlan decided to become a self-proclaimed football star. He was particularly fond of the World Cup championship in Spain in 1982. In 2002, taking on the fictional number 23, he performed a one-man reconstruction of the final, the Italy-Germany game in Lausanne in the Pontaise Stadium. In August 2006, in Paris’ Parc des Princes Stadium, he played Michel Platini in the semi-final against Germany in Barcelona, a match that was tragic for France. In 2007 in Warsaw, Massimo Furlan was Boniek. The Boniek! performance, was part of a series of performance events comprising the Farewell to the Tenth Anniversary Stadium, at that time the largest flea-market in Europe. The stadium, built from the rubble of Warsaw, opened in 1955 as a symbol of the glory of communism. From the mid 1980s, it ceased to be used as a sports venue and fell into ruin. In the early 1990s, it was ‘brought back to life’ by international market stallholders, pioneers of capitalism, who set up their camping tables with merchandise around the upper ring of the Stadium. From that time, the venue functioned as a city within a city. In 2007, for many Varsovians, the Stadium turned out to be a great revelation: an extraordinary sight appearing in the middle of the capital, namely a Vietnamese city amidst the ruins of an almost ancient sports facility. Today the Stadium is no longer there. In its place is an ultra-modern sports arena constructed for the purpose of the upcoming Euro 2012 Football Championship.

TRANSCRIPCIÓN DEL COMENTARIO DE TOMASZ ZIMOCH PARA LA RECONSTRUCCIÓN DEL PARTIDO POLONIA-BÉLGICA 1982 (3:0) REALIZADA EN SOLITARIO POR MASSIMO FURLAN ¡Mi Bélgica querida, por el Rey, la Ley, la Libertad! – éstas son las letras que cantan los hinchas belgas. Y ahora, el himno polaco, la Mazurca de Dąbrowski. Aquí en Barcelona, en junio de 1982, va a sonar diferente. La Mazurca de Dabrowski, las banderas rojiblancas de los aficionados polacos, las pancartas con el lema Solidaridad quieren decir algo totalmente distinto, pero también expresan que hay que ser solidario con la representación polaca (…) (…) Está a punto de cumplirse el tercer minuto de partido. Polonia-Bélgica empate a cero, segunda fase del Campeonato Mundial (…) Majewski a Buncol, Buncol en el círculo central, llega Paweł Janas. Janas pasa con suavidad a Andrzej Buncol, Buncol advierte un buen pase a Marek Dziuba… corre a la derecha, a su lado el belga, pero Marek logra ceder a Grzegorz Lato, Lato a la altura del área de castigo, Lato corre hacia la línea final del campo, Lato en la banda lateral del área de penalti, Lato a Boniek… Disparo y ¡¡¡GOOOOOOOOOOL!!! ¡¡¡Uno a cero!!! ¡Zbigniew Boniek ha entrado en el área con la velocidad de un gamo! Y con un chut fantástico con el pie derecho, la pelota ha rebotado en el larguero y ha sorprendido al portero Theo Custers. Minuto cuatro del encuentro, un magnífico inicio para el partido Polonia-Bélgica, un tiro fantástico de Zbigniew Boniek. Minuto 11, una tarde calurosa en Barcelona, a lo lejos suena el alboroto de las Ramblas, el ruido del puerto. Barcelona se divierte así cada día a estas horas. (…) Ya se han cumplido 12 minutos, nos quedan 78 hasta el final del partido, un duro encuentro. Empezamos la lucha en la segunda fase del torneo. Hace dos semanas, cuando comenzábamos las contiendas en un partido contra Italia, y luego también con el empate en el encuentro con Camerún, algunos ya empezaban a decir que los polacos íbamos a volver pronto a nuestro país. Algunos militantes ya compraban las naranjas y los plátanos -productos imposibles de conseguir en Polonia- para volver con bolsas llenas a rebosar y para que, por lo menos, en este sentido, el campeonato resultase exitoso. Pero de repente, el partido con Perú. Allí los nuestros jugaron fantásticamente y ojalá nos podamos quedar en España hasta el último día del torneo. (…) Y ahora Smolarek hacia Dziuba, éste pasa a Janusz Kupcewicz, Kupcewicz pasa al centro. Kupcewicz empuja fuerte el balón hacia la banda izquierda, Buncol….entra Boniek con la cabeza – ¡¡¡GOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! ¡¡¡GOOOOOOOOOL!!! ¡Dos a cero! Si marcando el primer gol Boniek corría con la velocidad de un gamo, en este segundo tanto ha sido ágil como una ardilla. Una acción extraordinaria del equipo polaco: Buncol con la cabeza en el aire, como si bailara, como si fuese un Armstrong allá en la luna, Boniek arrancó y logró peinar el balón con un golpe de cabeza por encima del peludo cancerbero Theo Custers. Me pellizco, porque realmente es verdad, está sucediendo: ¡¡¡estamos ganando a los belgas!!! ¡¡Dos a cero!! Una auténtica película, puro cine, podría estar en la cartelera años y años. BONIEK! 1982-2012 dólares pagó la Juventus por Zbigniew Boniek, pero después de dos acciones como éstas, el valor del jugador polaco tendría que subir al menos un 100 por ciento, pero la transacción ya está hecha: Boniek pasa del Widzew a la Juventus de Turín. Se oye tan sólo un apellido coreado por los hinchas en el estadio: ¡¡Boniek, Boniek, Boniek!!... Giovanni Trapattoni, el entrenador de la Juventus, también está presente en las gradas, y sonríe, pues este futbolista dentro de nada va a jugar en el famoso equipo italiano. Aunque de momento, Boniek está aplazando su viaje a Turín para incorporarse a la concentración de los entrenamientos pretemporada, desea pasar el mayor tiempo posible con el equipo polaco… Majewski pasa a Władysław Żmuda. Żmuda, desmarcado, corre a lo largo de la línea del área belga, entrega el balón a Paweł Janas, que viste un pantalón cortísimo, el pantalón de Paweł parece el más corto de todos, casi se le ven las nalgas… pero ahora esto ya no importa, ahora empieza la acción del equipo belga (…). En la esquina derecha del campo, un viento ligero que parece brisa del mar. Barcelona, siglo XV. Aquí en esta ciudad Cristóbal Colón, en algún sitio cerca de este estadio, habló sobre el descubrimiento de las Indias Occidentales… pero qué importa Colón ahora… ahora lo que importa es lo que hace Boniek y lo que hacen otros diez futbolistas de nuestro equipo. He hablado de la velocidad del gamo, pero es una expresión de Vargas Llosa, quien la utilizó impresionado con el juego de Boniek durante el encuentro con Perú. He hablado de la agilidad de la ardilla que nos ha demostrado Zbigniew Boniek. Pero estoy hablando también de tener la cabeza en su sitio, de la satisfacción de Antoni Piechniczek, de la satisfacción del entrenador de la Juventus, Giovanni Trapattoni, de la satisfacción de la madre y del padre allí en su casa de Bydgoszcz, que estaban felices cuando el hijo empezaba a jugar al fútbol. Quizás entonces no tenía todavía tanto talento, pero sí mucho empeño, mucha determinación, no sólo en comparación con su hermano, sino también con otros canteranos del Zawisza Bydgoszcz, como por ejemplo Henryk Miłoszewicz. Porque Boniek cuando decía algo, lo hacía. Si dijo que iba a ser un gran futbolista, ha llegado a serlo. Y cuando una de sus maestras del colegio le preguntó una vez: “¿Qué vas a ser de mayor?”, Boniek respondió: “Futbolista”. Y ante la sorpresa de la maestra que decía que eso no era una profesión, contestó con rebeldía: “Señora maestra, cuando yo juegue al fútbol, esto sí va a ser una profesión”. Y Boniek de nuevo tenía razón. (…) Władyslaw Żmuda saca la pelota con la cabeza -¡no, con el pie!- la pasa al centro. Toma el balón Zbigniew Boniek, todavía en la zona central de nuestro campo. Boniek, desde la derecha, piensa a quién pasarle el balón. Pasa la línea media del campo. Boniek hace un pase genial, la pelota vuela más allá de los 50 metros y Włodzimierz Smolarek la controla con el pecho. Smolarek hace una pared con Grzegorz Lato. Boniek se acerca al área de castigo. Smolarek centra al medio devolviendo la pelota a Grzegorz Lato. Lato regatea con habilidad a los defensas belgas. Boniek retoma el balón. Boniek cara a cara con Custers. Boniek le gana la partida. Boniek… ¡¡¡GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! ¡¡¡GOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!

Boniek ya está en el Louvre del fútbol, como Leonardo da Vinci y la Gioconda, así Boniek por tercera vez deja su sello en el césped del Camp Nou, por tres veces deja aquí la huella polaca… porque Boniek es Boniek: en el minuto 4, en el 27 y en el 55 del partido. Tres a cero para Polonia. Zbigniew Boniek coreado por todos los hinchas. Sonríe Antoni Piechniczek, sonríe el entrenador Bogusław Hajdas. Zbigniew ahora juega con su cadena de oro que resplandece en su cuello. (…) Las banderas rojo y blanco, los polacos sonrientes, cuánto debemos a Zbigniew Boniek. Ya no necesitará tarjeta de presentación, su tarjeta de presentación será lo que ha demostrado hoy en el estadio de Barcelona. (…) ¡Para chuparse los dedos! Señores, crucen sus dedos en Polonia. Nosotros estamos aquí sentados con un grupo de hinchas que salieron de nuestro país durante el estado de sitio y que se asentaron en España. Un grupo fantástico de forofos que no paran de alentar a nuestro equipo… Zbigniew Boniek – ¡de qué no sería capaz ese hombre! El primer gol fue la fuerza, porque el tiro fue tan fuerte que el balón casi rompe el larguero. En el segundo gol, con ese precioso disparo, demostró que tenía cabeza. Y el tercero: Zbigniew Boniek aprovechando fantásticamente el pase a Grzegorz Lato y ganando el duelo cara a cara con el portero Custers. Esto ya no fue sólo magia, sino también una habilidosa demostración de astucia y picardía. Ya parece haber gastado todas sus fuerzas ese futbolista marciano, como lo llaman los observadores del partido. El Camp Nou aplaude. Boniek regresa lentamente, con elegancia, a pesar de que los belgas ya están cerca de nuestro área de penalti. (…) Una tarde maravillosa, en sus casas ya es casi medianoche… aquí, en las Ramblas de Barcelona, ¡qué va a pasar aquí! Pasará lo que todos los días, pero esta noche las Ramblas serán polacas, todos bailarán, beberán, brindarán. Barcelona será polaca por un día. (…) ¿En qué minuto estamos? Todo está oscuro. No hay ninguna lámpara en la cabina de comentaristas de la radio polaca en Barcelona, y vendría bien por lo menos una bombilla, o una vela, tal vez una lámpara de petróleo. Mi cronómetro marca el minuto 89 de partido. Los belgas saben que han perdido. Polonia ya forma parte de la historia de este estadio de fútbol, de la historia de este campeonato mundial. Nuestro equipo ha jugado un partido fantástico, un partido del que vamos a seguir hablando durante años. (…) Aplauden no sólo los forofos polacos, también los españoles. Así juega nuestro equipo. Éste ha sido un fútbol hermoso, variado, espectacular, y el exigente público de Barcelona premia a los jugadores del equipo polaco. (…) Boniek está preparado para recibir la pelota de Włodzimierz Ciołek, pero suena el silbido final. ¡Boniek! El rey Zbigniew Boniek. ¿Se quitará esta camiseta o no? Que se la quite, que la intercambie con alguien del equipo adversario, pero los colores que representa serán siempre el rojo y el blanco. Boniek, el héroe de este partido. And now Dąbrowski’s Mazurka, here in Barcelona, in June 1982 will sound even more different. Dąbrowski’s Mazurka, the Polish fans’ red and white flags and the Solidarity slogans mean something completely different, but they also say that we must show solidarity with the Polish national team. It’s as if Boniek is in the footballer’s Louvre, like Leonardo da Vinci on his Gioconda, Boniek carves his name on the pitch of Camp Nou, he leaves Poland’s mark three times, for Boniek is Boniek – at the 4th, 27th and 55th minute of the game. Poland leads 3-nil against the Belgian team. Zbigniew Boniek – seems there’s nothing he can’t do. The first goal – sheer strength, since he struck it with such force that the football nearly broke the crossbar. The second goal – well, he sure had his head screwed on, executing the most beautiful strike, but the third goal – now that was a pure fantasy of the cunning, deceit and great skill of Zbigniew Boniek, who made fantastic use of the pass from Grzegorz Lato and won the one-on-one duel with the goalie Custers. (...) The footballer from Mars, as those watching this match call him, has run out of steam. Slowly but proudly, Boniek is coming back into our half as Camp Nou applauds him, but now the Belgians are approaching our penalty area. (...) It’s a wonderful evening, almost midnight at home, while the Ramblas here in Barcelona - is a hive of activity. It’s like this every day, but today the Ramblas will belong to the Poles, they’ll be dancing, raising toasts, it will be a Polish day in Barcelona (...)

BONIEK! 1982-2012 What minute are we now? It’s almost dark. The Polish radio sports commentators in Barcelona have already switched off their lights. A lamp, light bulb, candle or paraffin lamp would be handy, but according to my stop-watch we’re in the 89th minute. The Belgians already know they’ve lost. Poland has etched its story into the annals of football history, into the history of this football stadium. This was a fantastic match for our team, this was a match that we’ll be speaking about for years. (...) The fans are cheering, not just the Polish, but the Spanish fans, too. That goes to show how well our team can play. This was beautiful football, so varied and spectacular that even the discriminating public in Barcelona are applauding the Polish team (...) Boniek doesn’t take the ball from Włodzimierz Ciołek, as the final whistle has blown. Boniek! King Zbigniew Boniek. Will he take his shirt off or not? Why doesn’t he take it off, exchange it with someone from the opposing team, or maybe throw the white, or in fact white and red Polish national shirt up in the air. Boniek is the hero of the match. Poland has set the rhythm and tone of this world cup. After a sluggish start, Poland may well be heading for an outstanding World Cup. Boniek: 4th minute, Boniek, 27th minute, Boniek, 55th minute.
