A few cool ideas to make your celebration really stand out!

w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

Planning a wedding is fun and exciting, but it can be exhausting. If you are lucky enough to find the dress, flowers, venue, and everything else on the first try, good for you (but we admit, we are a little jealous)! However, if you are struggling to nail down any part of your wedding, know that you are in good company. Consider the following options as you plan the perfect day that will reflect who you are both as individuals and as a couple. may 2015

Rock N Roll Bride features newlyweds who step outside of the box and illustrate the beauty of nontraditional weddings. Brides reflect their personal style in tulle, polka dots, or lace (and many steer clear of the traditional white gown). Grooms don suspenders, top hats, or plaid suits. This is a dream come true for the couple looking for ways to reflect who they are—not what traditional wedding magazines say they should be. Check them out at www.rock nrollbride.com. We love slightly mismatched bridal party dresses. No body type is the same, and not everyone is going to be comfortable in the same dress all day. Choose a color and let your bridesmaids choose the style of dress and maybe even the shade they wear! This way, they can feel their very best in what they are wearing AND choose a dress within their price range. After all, they might want the option to wear their dress more than once! Spring 2015 Pantone colors include aquamarine and classic blue. Sticking with the time-honored “something blue” tradition, we couldn’t help but fall in love with the idea of a classic blue bouquet. Incorporating any of the pantone colors into your floral arrangements may seem a little mainstream, but it also might make it easier to find decorations that complement one another. Cake toppers are such a cool way to step outside of the box. Those little plastic human figurines can be so limiting—and they often don’t really look like the bride and groom. Get creative—Etsy has several cute options, including ADORABLE paper mache “bride and groom” birds. Or, personalize it by using photo holder clips to show off your favorite photos of one another. Both options are great to keep on display in your home after the festivities are over! Above all, this is YOUR day. Do what is necessary to make it special for YOU. But if you need a little more inspiration, we’ve got you covered. Visit our Pinterest page this month (and always) for more great ideas! w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

Preparing for the

A Bella Bride

big day Five questions to ask before marriage

Marriage is a milestone in life; yet, many enter into the next phase without asking their spouse some vital questions about important topics like money and children. “Marriage is a lifelong commitment built on trust, clear communication and honesty,” says John Heath, Directing Attorney for Lexington Law. “While some may find financial discussions unnecessary, understanding each other intimately in terms of what you both bring to the table will strengthen your relationship and help to avoid potentially serious friction to your marriage down the road.” We know the months ahead will be filled with exciting plans and happy experiences, but if you choose to avoid tough emotional topics you will never learn how to converse with your partner—and that could create problems that are harder to solve once you are married. If you are among the soon-to-be wed, consider starting a conversation using the questions below:

1. How do you view money?

How do you budget? Are you meticulous about your bills/expenses? Do you just wing it? What is the most you would ever spend on a home, car, piece of clothing, etc?

2. Do you want children?

How soon and how many? What career goals do you want to reach prior to starting a family?

3. How should we budget for our dream family?

(ie. bigger home, different car, medical expenses, college, etc.)

4. What should we do when we have disagreements (big or small)?

Avoiding the subject will put you at risk for larger conflict down the road. There is no easy answer here, but finding out how they will handle disagreements is a good way to start the conversation.

5. Is marriage the best step for us right now?

Financially, are we where we want to be when we tie the knot? Are we feeling pressured by family and friends or societal expectations to make a commitment? In most cases, waiting a couple of years and getting where you want to be financially/emotionally before getting married will not end your relationship—and if it does, getting married would not have fixed the problem. page 10 | bella magazine | may 2015

Do you have any debts that I should be aware of? Put all credit cards/student loans “on the table.” Do you want to go back to school? What are your plans to finance that decision? Get credit reports for both of you and look at them... together. (If you are uncomfortable with this, you need to rethink your plans altogether.)

A Bella Bride Professional event planner Alison Hotchkiss knows a thing or two about creating memorable bridal celebrations. As the founderowner of Alison Events, she’s produced stunning weddings all over the world. Her tips on entertaining will help you make your bridal celebration picture perfect.

• Bubbles add a festive, celebratory note to any bridal celebration. I love Cupcake Prosecco sparkling wine from Italy. It’s crisp and refreshing—an affordable alternative to pricey French champagne yet equally delicious. • Food doesn’t have to be complicated to be remarkable. The finger foods here are varied and flavorful—but they’re not hard to make. To satisfy all guest preferences, I always recommend 3 to 5 appetizers including chicken, beef and fish plus two veggie options (ideally one being vegan or dairy free). • A signature drink is a fun way to welcome guests and get the party off to a great start. The Prosecco Ginger Cocktail (recipe below) is delicious and memorable. I like to serve it in unconventional glassware and garnish with Persian cucumber “swizzle sticks” for even more impact. • A popular alternative to the traditional sit down meal at engagement parties or showers: food stations with a range of different foods offered at each. Pair a different wine with each station to create maximum variety as guests taste and mingle. • Factor in overall ambiance and the vibe you want for your wedding or event. Lighting is key. And when it comes to candles, more is more. • Flavored vodka is another big trend I’m seeing right now. Look for vodkas infused with such exotic flavors as vanilla frosting, devil’s food cake and more. And don’t be afraid to mix spirits with wine! • It’s not only more fun to serve bite-sized cupcakes at your wedding but they offer more variety and unexpected flavor combinations than a traditional cake. • Be sure to have a good assortment of non-alcoholic beverages on hand as well such as bottled water, soft drinks and more to prevent dehydration and ensure that guests drink responsibly. For more tips from Alison for creating a bridal event to remember, visit www.cupcakevineyards.com.

Prosecco Ginger Cocktail 1 1/2 cups water 1 cup (6 ounces) crystallized ginger 1/2 cup sugar 2 bottles (750 ml) Cupcake Prosecco, chilled 24 thin diagonal sliced seedless or Persian cucumber

Combine water, ginger and sugar in saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer on low heat, uncovered, 15 minutes. Off heat let steep, covered, 30 minutes. Cool. Purée in blender until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon ginger purée to each champagne glass. Add chilled prosecco, and stir well with swizzle stick until blended. Garnish glass with cucumber slice. page 14 | bella magazine | may 2015

Centerpieces

For your wedding, shower, or any other celebration! Decorating for your reception or bridal shower can be a little overwhelming. Fortunately, our Pinterest page has you covered. We spend (maybe a little too much of) our free time finding the most unique and fun décor to help inspire your celebrations. Here are some of our favorites:

Paper Flower Centerpieces www.ohhowpinteresting.blogspot.com

Empty soda bottles • White matte spray paint • Twigs or sticks • Scrapbook paper

Clean the labels off of the soda or beer bottles by soaking the bottles in hot water. Dry off and then spray with the white spray paint. To make the paper flowers draw a spiral on a 4x4 piece of paper and cut the spiral out along the lines that you drew. Start to coil up the paper until you get to the very end. At the end, glue the center of the coil to the bottom end of the paper and the flower should stay together. Then, hot glue the paper flowers to the twigs and arrange them in the bottles.

Bookpage Jars www.arrowandapple.com*

Old bookpages, drawings, maps, woodgrain contact paper, anything paper! • Mod Podge • A brush • Jars (make sure you can fit a candle inside them first) or hurricane glass

Rinse out your jars and remove labels. A good way to get labels off is to first fill the jars with hot water, let them soak a few minutes, and while the hot water is in the jar, just peel the label off. Pick out your pages and glue them with Mod Podge onto the jars. Let your jars dry on wax paper for a few hours. Do extra decorating if you like—tie ribbon or string around for a little more color! Add candles for the finished product. (*Editor’s note: everything on this blog is beautiful, so you can find A LOT of excellent decorating and photography ideas there.)

Gold Dipped Balloons www.balloontime.com

Latex balloons • Helium tank • Liquid gold leaf • Soft bristle paint brush • String, ribbon or other trim for tying Visit our Pinterest page for more great DIY centerpiece ideas that will make your event something to remember!

w w w. l o v e l y b e l l a . c o m

Blow up balloons and tie off. Holding the balloon upside down, paint your gold leaf on the bottom half of the balloon, using long strokes until you achieve the look you desire.

Wedding Registry 101

Everything you need to know about creating your registry For engaged couples, it can seem as if there are a million things to accomplish before the big day arrives. One essential piece of the wedding puzzle involves creating a registry that makes it easy for guests to celebrate your union with gifts that reflect your personality as a couple. It’s no wonder why guests love the ease and simplicity of a gift registry. But many couples may not know where to begin when setting out to create this useful list. Here are some helpful pointers to help you get started on creating a perfect wedding registry:

Start Early:

Most couples like to register 4-6 months before their wedding date, which allows more time for choosing items, planning for showers and meeting other deadlines.

Register Together:

Whether it’s in-store, online or both – make a day of it and have fun selecting all the things that will be part of your new life together.

Choose Different Price Points: Guests will ap-

preciate a varied list that has many gift options to fit their personal budget.

Create a Registry That Reflects You: If you’re

a laid-back, easygoing couple, consider registering for a more casual dinnerware pattern that you can use every day, then mix in some fancy pieces to use for those special occasions. If you enjoy entertaining friends and family, be sure to choose a range of serveware and barware.

Making the Right Choices With all the things needed to properly stock your home, selecting the right ones can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to keep in mind while adding to your registry:

Select Your Settings:

A five-piece setting is meant to serve one person and includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, tea cup and saucer. If you want to serve eight guests, you will need to register for eight fivepiece settings. Think twice about that fancy china set. It may be pretty and have a designer’s name on it, but is it really practical? Will you use them more than once a year? If the answer is no, skip the old-fashioned china pattern and opt for day-to-day use dishes. (You’ll thank us later!)

Stock Up on Kitchen Must-Haves: When it

comes to cookware, make sure to stock up on the essentials. This should include a fry pan, sauté pan, grill pan, sauteuse (round, deep-sided design for sautéing on the stovetop or baking in the oven) and a chef’s pan.

Opt for the Basics:

page 20 | bella magazine | may 2015

White dinnerware allows you to transform the look of your table year-round by changing the décor and accessories around it. The classic look will be a design that you can appreciate for years to come.

When it comes to planning, it can be a little overwhelming to think about the price tag on all the factors that make a wedding…well, a wedding. You know the drill: flower arrangements, venue, dress, centerpieces, wedding favors, decorations and the list goes on! Fortunately, we have some tips to help you stick to a budget:

Plus One Chaos: Keep your guest list on the low! Does your family friend’s 17-year-old daughter really need a ‘plus one’? If your answer is ‘probably not’ then don’t give them a plus one – it’s as simple as that.

2

*

Pro-Buffets: To save cash on the meal, opt for buffet style rather than plated. Plated meals can get super pricey and your wallet won’t dig it! With buffets, your guests can pick and choose which food item they want to eat – hello cash saver!

3

Dessert Debacle: We totally think this is the best part of the wedding planning process (besides the dress, of course)! However, this can get quite expensive fast. If you’re cutting costs, opt for a dessert bar. It’ll be way cheaper, plus it’ll give your wedding more personality and your guests more dessert options. A win-win if you ask us!

Staying active on the job

With spring in full swing, gardening, bicycling and other outdoor activities are plentiful. Soreness and stiffness from sitting at a work station all day can hinder exercise and enjoying the summer season. The good news is you can increase your flexibility, ward off stiffness, prevent long-term injuries and prepare for summer activities right on the job. Stretching your legs and upper body while you work increases circulation, improves posture and decreases fatigue while simultaneously improving your mental status and ability to concentrate. It’s important to take frequent breaks to stretch—every hour if you are sitting continuously. Centra physical therapists suggest pumping your legs, pointing your toes and pulling them back and forth when sitting at your desk. Employees who can stand at their desks also can move up and down on their toes. People who have balance issues can hold onto the desk during this type of exercise. Blood pools in the legs if they are stationary, and this can result in blood clots. Exercising your legs for two to five minutes every hour during the day will help circulate the blood. Because most work is in front of us, our upper bodies tend to collapse inward with a rounding of the shoulders and upper back. It’s important to stretch chest muscles to achieve good posture. When sitting, you can straighten your upper back and pinch your shoulder blades together. When standing, grasp your hands behind your back and push your shoulders back. We need to be conscious of stretching our upper chest muscles as well as our legs. Back and shoulder pain are among the most common work-related complaints and are often caused by ordinary work activities such as sitting in front of a computer all day. Adapting the workplace to your job, using ergonomic principles and tools (such as wrist pads for the

mouse and keyboard), can prevent long term discomfort and injury. Office workers should be sure to have their computer screens adjusted so that there is a direct sight line to the screen. You should not have to move your head or your eyes excessively in any direction in order to see the screen. It is also important to maintain proper posture in your chair. Make sure your chair is adjusted to the proper height and use a pillow or back rest in your chair so that you do not slouch. Good posture is extremely important to good health. When your body is properly balanced, you are not activating muscles unnecessarily. You also achieve better blood flow, which translates to a better oxygen supply. If you have the opportunity, take a walk away from your desk. Both stretching and walking help clear the mind and will make you more productive and decrease pain. You don’t want to bounce when you stretch and you don’t want to cause pain. Posture is very important when you stretch so that you don’t overstress your muscles. Anyone suffering from chronic pain should work with a physical therapist to develop a daily stretching and activity plan. With summer right around the corner, anyone who has been sedentary should increase activity levels gradually. A combination of stretching on the job and 10 minutes of stretching before and after any kind of exercise will help increase your flexibility, improve your fitness and prevent injury. may 2015

Water

The easiest thing you can do for your health & looks

You probably already know that exercising and eating right are key ways to improve your health. But, you may be overlooking one major health necessity that is as close as your kitchen faucet—water. “Staying hydrated is a very important component of staying healthy,” says physician assistant Tricia Howard. “Most people know they need to stay hydrated when they are doing vigorous exercise or in very hot weather, but they don’t realize the importance of making sure they are getting enough water every day.” Why water is important

Sixty percent of your body weight is made up of water. Since water carries nutrients to cells in your body, and flushes toxins from vital organs, Howard says it is important to replace what you lose daily. “Our bodies are always losing water—even when we breathe we are losing small amounts,” she says. “So, it is important to know how much water you need daily and to make a point of drinking it.” Your daily intake

According to Howard, men need three liters, or 13 cups, of water a day. Women should drink 2.2 liters or nine cups daily. “If you drink water with each meal, and at least one glass between each meal, you will be very close to what you need to drink every day,” Howard suggests. Beauty benefits

page 26 | bella magazine | may 2015

Staying hydrated also approves the appearance of your skin. “Drinking a glass of water is one of the easiest things any of us can do,” Howard says. “It is important to how your body works on the inside, and how it looks on the outside. Adding this simple step to your daily routine is well worth the many benefits.”

Tales From Stacey Rae

the story of a hero

Honoring a veteran grandfather Written by

{

Stacey Brugh lives in Roanoke, but grew up in “Brughville” in Buchanan. She says, “My parents taught me to live each day to the fullest and we do! My days are always filled with fun stuff!” She claims to be just a “small town girl with a big smile.” And big dreams! Read about her life—past and present—here each month. Stacey Brugh

May is the month we honor and remember our veterans. I find it fitting to commemorate a man I have always been connected to by my middle name. I never had the chance to meet him-- he passed away four years before I was born—but, after spending time with his son Marvin and hearing stories about him, I feel a closer bond to him. Ray Fringer White was born by the train tracks on September 24, 1919, in a little rural map dot called Lithia. He was the fifth child of 13 children. When Ray was 14, his sixteen-year-old brother, John, was killed in a sawmill accident. He lost his seventeen-year-old sister, Thelma, to Bright’s disease when he was sixteen. Two years later, he lost his father. As the oldest son in the family, it became his job to provide for them. He found work for N&W Railroad as a waterboy. Eventually, he became a trackman. The train tracks that he grew up next to in Lithia led him to Walnut Cove, North Carolina for work. There, he walked into a little store beside the tracks and met the love of his life, Lois Jane Dodson. She was the store owner’s daughter, and worked behind the counter. It was love at first sight. They married on November 15, 1941. In August of 1943, they welcomed their first son, Kenneth, and started making plans for a family. Two months later, Ray was drafted. He left behind his wife, new son, four siblings, and his mother to go fight for his country. Like most soldiers, Ray never spoke of his military career. So Marvin, made it his mission to track his father’s footsteps years later. I can’t imagine what must have been going through his mind or how he felt during this trying time. On October 13, 1943, he was inducted to the US ARMY and started active duty on November 3. He was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA with the 540TH Combat Engineers 2nd BN CO E. He arrived in Italy in May of 1944. Their motto was, “We Clear the Way.” During wartime in August of 1944, the 540th Unit joined other element of the 7th Army and became the 2833rd Combat of Engineers en route to Southern France. The role of this unit was to go wherever they were needed or were assigned to help. They built bridges, cleared land mines, and worked in construction on roads or railroads—whatever they could do to clear the way. Sources say the unit traveled 251 miles, constructed 12 fixed bridges, and maintained roads in an assigned area of 6,369 square miles. Ray served in four campaigns: Rome- Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was overseas in the war for one year, six months, and 18 days. He received an honorable discharge from the US ARMY on December 8, 1945. Afterwards, he went back to work for the N&W railroad and made his home in Lithia. In the years that followed, he and Lois welcomed Marvin and two daughters--Jane and my mother, Bertha. He suffered a stroke at the age of 48 and, in May of 1972, he died at the veteran’s hospital in Salem, Virginia. He was 52. I dedicate this article in his honor. I also salute and thank the men and women that are veterans or serve in any branch of military for the sacrifices you made/make for your country and your family. Ray, you are my veteran hero. I have enjoyed getting to know you through Marvin’s research and articles about your travels so far away from home. I am proud to say I am your granddaughter and carry your name. may 2015
