UN REPEAT NEW RELEASE//PREVIEWS

“Hope,” says Christian Burns - “if there’s one word that sums this album up, that’d be it.” The story of “Love Songs From Suburbia” begins in Los Angeles in April of 2020. This album was spurred by not one, but two sizeable occurrences. One was global (no prizes) and the second, about as personal as they come. For the first time in decades, long-time LA resident Christian suddenly and unexpectedly felt far from home. With a real sense of the way the West Coast winds were blowing, last April he hopped a flight back to the familial north of England. Adding extra impetus to the international situation was the recent demise of his long-term relationship. So leaving behind house, studio, car and everything else non-suitcase-sized, he landed back in his native Greater Manchester. Writing his second artist album (the long deferred follow up to 2013’s “Simple Modern Answers”) couldn’t have been further from the plan, simply as there wasn’t one. Without a permanent base in the county, Christian took refuge under his sister’s roof. Setting up a makeshift studio in a vacant building in the middle of a field on his sibling’s property he began to write and out came “Love Songs From Suburbia.” While the temptation might be there, don’t look at ‘Love Song’s track titles (twelve in total) anticipating a chapter-like overview of Christian’s inspirations. Poker-faced, from ‘Tigers’ or ‘Honour’ at the frontend to ‘The Hands That Matter’ or ‘Everywhere’ at the back, there’s not one title that allows conclusions. It’s within the album’s verses and choruses that Christian’s meanings lie, some just below the surface, others core deep. As the mind translates them, a journey takes place and ‘Love Songs’ figurations become clear. First listens to Christian’s second album will likely leave the impression that it’s musical elements are there solely as a passive bit-part players. The feet move, the ears prick, but your focus rarely traffics from Christian’s absorbing-to-mesmerizing songs, refrains and harmonies. A testament to their stunning tact though, over time those elements begin to pop more to the fore, and with them the realisation of just what kind of extraordinary balancing act ‘Love Songs’ is pulling off. A wistful, blissful, sun-on-your-face-styled feel - ‘Café del Mar with beats’ perhaps - it carries its tone innately first track through last. It’s an album with nothing to prove other than art-of-lyric, authenticity of voice and depth-of-meaning always wins through. “Love Songs From Suburbia” is now available to stream or purchase at blackhole.lnk.to/lovesongs.

Eliza Noble and Jennifer Skillman are Eli & Fur: the British live act, singer-songwriter, and producer duo whose career together stretches back for nearly a decade. “Found In The Wild” is the pair’s long-awaited studio debut on the seminal electronic imprint and long-time label home Anjunadeep. A dual part album concept, “Found in The Wild” is a sonic presentation of two contrasting and quintessential parts of the unique Eli & Fur sound; two sides of the Eli & Fur which they are finally ready to share with the world, “We wanted to show both sides of us. We are quite varied in the way that we write music and so it made sense to have two parts living side by side. Everything we really love is on the album and we’re super proud of how it’s come together.” The first half of the album ‘Found’ is a collection of song-based productions which show Eli & Fur’s strengths as songwriters, vocalists, and producers in equal measure. Having begun their careers as songwriters at renowned production house Xenomania writing hits for pop acts like Girls Aloud, Eli & Fur’s talents as songwriters are abundantly clear. “Wild Skies” is taken from the ‘Found’ collection - a sensual and otherworldly ensemble that glues the duo’s trademark textured sound palette together perfectly. “Wild Skies came together so organically and naturally. I felt like I was expressing myself without even really realizing how and the melodies just fell out of me. A lot of the time, I’ll write lyrics before the song, but with this one there was no preparation whatsoever, I just sat down at the computer with the microphone and sung, and that was that!” (Fur). The second half of the LP ‘In the Wild’ is a change in gear conceptually and ventures into the more upbeat, clubbier side of the project - these tracks explore the girls’ penchant for emotive productions geared for the dancefloor which find the sweet spot between the dark and the emotive, marrying evocative vocals written around their own experiences as young musicians with their unique brand of euphoric club cuts. “We spent a lot of our career trying to work out who we are and what our sound is, being told we can’t make club tracks which have the type of vocals we love. What’s great is that every single track on the album sounds like us, it’s all Eli & Fur but it’s two different sides of it. We want people to hear more structured songs and we also want to show the type of darker, clubbier music we love - there’s no reason why we can’t do both. It’s been such a creative journey so far but we feel more and more sure of what we want to say musically.” “Found In The WIld” is now availlable on Anjunabeats. Downtempo electronic duo ERA C released their latest album “DELIRIA” on May 28th via Future Archive Recordings. Accompanying the album is the outstanding track, “Don’t Call Me From Los Angeles.” The single follows the release of “0-60 mph,” which was accompanied by a live video shot at home, as well as the Arms and Sleepers edit of their single “DELIRIA,” which was mixed by Sun Glitters. ERA C is the collaborative project of Mirza Ramic from the well-known Arms and Sleepers duo and Sofia Insua of the established band Easy Easy. The duo has toured globally and shared a stage with well-known acts such as Toro Y Moi, Wax Tailor, Nightmares On Wax, Max Cooper and Caspian, amongst others. In total, the pair has received over 33 million streams on Spotify and Apple Music alone. Easy Easy have performed at shows with several big artists including Sean Paul, Ximena Sariñana, Incubus, Camilo Séptimo, Little Jesus and Mi Sobrino Memo. The quartet has collected nearly 3 million plays on Spotify alone and appear on the renowned Majestic Casual playlist and airplay from KCRW. Sofia Insua was born in Guatemala and is currently based in Berlin, Germany along with Mirza Ramic, who was born in Bosnia & Herzegovina and lived most of his adult life in Boston, USA before moving to Germany. The duo draw inspiration from the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Grouper and Low. “0-60 mph” calls to mind the likes of FKA Twigs, Bjork, Massive Attack, and Lana Del Rey. A transnational creation that embodies a unique selection of influences in a delicate offering to all that life has to offer, “DELIRIA” is an ode to travel, and discovery. Finding its home somewhere between romantic elements, bitter points of distrust and hope for the future, the LP envelopes all with its wavering electronic beats and irresistible vocals. “Don’t Call Me From Los Angeles” is a harsh look at communications with a missing love, driven by deep basslines and irrefutable lyrics. ERA C proves to be a captivating mix of unusual tempos to both express and lull away hardships. Speaking of the LP, Sofia Insua explains “DELIRIA is about distance and its sneaky way of censoring the heart, preventing it from feeling. I wrote the tracks during various transitional periods in my life, so I was going through change - adapting, looking for the next steps, and finding ways for love to survive. Some of the most defining lyrics on the record popped up in my head while walking busy streets, while travelling, while in motion. I was discovering myself geographically and through the songs that ended being ‘DELIRIA’.” “DELIRIA” is out now via Future Archive Recordings. Stream/Buy here.

A love letter to rave culture, “199X” is the debut artist album from Anjunabeats stalwart Damion ‘Damo’ Houchen, also known as Genix. The first single taken from “199X,” “Numb” partners Genix with BBC Radio 1 supported singer-songwriter Natalie McCool, also known as LYCA. The Liverpool-based multi-instrumentalist received acclaim for her 2016 album “The Great Unknown,” championed by the likes of Q, The Sunday Times, Huw Stephens, and Alice Levine. “199X” is a departure from the sound Genix is best known for. Through the late 2000s and 2010s, Genix was well known for his textured, melodic take on trance. He caught the ear of Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk, securing releases on both Armada and Vandit. Genix arrived on Anjunabeats in 2010 and immediately became a mainstay in Above & Beyond’s sets with tracks like “Aura,”“Destinations” and “Black Water” (the latter written with regular touring partner Sunny Lax). From those origins, Genix has blossomed into a mainstay in the trance scene. As his stature grew, so did his approach to his music. “There have been so many influences [on my sound]; DJs, producers, events, and the thousands of records I’ve bought over the years. I don’t try to be any one genre, some people think I produce less trance sometimes, but if you have followed my career from the start it’s always had tech influences. I think any producer should stick to the sounds they love, if it makes me jump out of my seat when I’m making it, then that’s all that really matters. My music is a representation of my personal taste, it’s my expression and my passion being put into sound. It really is an art and I just try to be myself, not a genre, not a certain BPM, just Genix.” - Genix His Anjunabeats Worldwide 09 mix championed these ideas. It was an iTunes #1 dance album that took us from slow-burning progressive to fiery techno, landing somewhere between a Global Underground mix and a classic Gatecrasher compilation. 2020’s “The Light” was a bullish electro-edged anthem alongside label mate Grum and hit number one on Beatport’s Melodic Techno chart. DJ support from Etienne De Crecy and Hi-Lo (Oliver Heldens) followed. “199X” will be released on September 10th. Pre-order now at the Anjuna Music Store.

UN REPEAT NEW RELEASE//PREVIEWS

On August 20, Cosmic Gate will release the first stage of their hotly anticipated new artist album. Trailed throughout the early parts of 2021 by vanguard single releases and stunning livestreams, “MOSAIIK” will platform nine sensational cuts from the GRAMMY nominated duo. Mirroring the same delivery system adopted by their 2017 “Materia” albums, seasoned CG fans will already be familiar with “MOSAIIK” release dynamic. Shared across two ‘Chapters’, ‘MOSAIIK’s ‘II’ styled title is a direct nod to the group’s eleventh artist longplayer. From its earliest stages, “Chapter One” has already brought some shake-up moments, not least its launch single – the deeply soul-searing (and streamed-to-infinity) Diana Miro-sung “Blame.” Since have come some eye-popping Miami & Mexico-based rooftop performances and the floor-fiery (and downright Dreamstate smashing!) “Feel It,” all of which underscore CG’s “Forward Ever, Backward Never” maxim. To “MOSAIIK”’s first Chapter will also come a second Diana Miro-voiced lightning strike, with the moodsome and more trance-slanted “Nothing To Hide.” There are also long overdue reteamings with Mike Schmid and Julie Thompson – singers who’ve respectively featured on CG’s “Start To Feel” and “Materia” albums. Needing little by way of explanation, Mike’s ‘Summer Wonder’ is a cheer to the season at hand, while Julie’s figuratively thought-provoking “These Dreams” brings “MOSAIIK” cooler raptures. The album also carries Nic & Bossi’s mainstage-minded singles “Universal Love” and “Your Mind,” as well as the less vocal-led, more progressive, but every bit as club-rubbed “Vertigo.” Giving you the best of possible ideas as to what Nic & Bossi have in store, you can preview all the cuts that comprise “MOSAIIK Chapter One” now, (https://blackhole.lnk.to/mosaiik1). Across all digital formats, the album is ready to pre-save or pre-order from today (with a CD edition set to follow with ‘Chapter 2’). So you can ensure you’re amongst the very first of the first to hear one of the albums of the summer. Check out the MOSAIIK Chapter One Teaser at https://youtu.be/rEyKxKoSZ7A

They launched the Digitalz project with the intention of exploring various sounds and fusing genres together. Their debut single “Don’t Need You” was released in 2017 and was shortly followed up by their coveted “Bohemian Rhapsody” remix which received staunch support from Axwell and David Guetta across multiple festival stages. In 2019, they released their sophomore single “Sweet Dreams” which provided another mesmerizing glimpse into their venerated studio prowess. Taking some time to hone their signature style, Digitalz has spent the past few years crafting their debut album. Capitalizing on rock sensibilities as well as pop elements, the duo blends an array of genres into cinematic electronic-forward soundscapes. The aim with the Digitalz project is to fully immerse the listener into an otherworldly universe including surreal visuals and larger-than-life melodies. SM: We know you’re from the Big Apple but where exactly? And where do you currently spin records at now? CS:” I’m from Long Island & Queens and now reside in Miami. I currently have a residency at The Hilton Miami Downtown Hotel on Thursdays, am regularly at The Hard Rock Guitar Hotel, and spin all over South Florida. “ SM: Do you have any new projects coming up you would like to tell us about? CS: “Working on traveling & getting back into the DJing groove post pandemic. Things are really heating up in South Florida! “ SM: How does the New York party scene compare to others? CS: “I moved to Miami in 2017 but my DJ friends in NY tell me its tough in Manhattan with venue costs & post Covid in general. I think the boroughs have more

44 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021

of a vibe at the moment. “ SM: How do you feel the EDM scene has evolved over the past few years? CS: “The EDM scene has been massive for a long time now. The live festivals & shows are quite the productions and attract fans from all over the world. There are so many veterans as well as up and coming producers. Although I don’t play too much edm I enjoy it and like to watch it evolve.” SM: What are the biggest obstacles of being a female DJ? CS: “Being a female in any male dominated industry is a challenge. I am very vigilant & try not to put myself in any potentially bad situations; growing up in NY taught me that. People say ‘Oh, you’re a girl, it must be so easy to get gigs’. Sometimes, but you will lose them as fast as you get them if your skills aren’t up to par.”

SM: How important is great brand management for a DJ today? CS: “Anyone on your team is critical. Relationships in any industry are important and we are living in a visual, computer generated world and branding is definitely a huge part of that. Don’t Look Down Productions has played an integral part in my growth and career.”

a lot about the business. As the business began to change and streaming took precedent, I realized it’s much more conducive to be my own boss, play what I want, make my own schedule, and not be dependent or at the mercy of someone else. Ie; when the producer finishes mixing, when the artist cuts the vocals.. there are so many hours you potentially don’t get paid for and I decided to use my time more wisely, plus DJing is much more fun! “

SM: What are all your social media handles Where can we find your mixes?

SM: In your opinion who’s the top female DJ of all time?

CS: “All my handles are listed under my name. Search: Candace Storch. Website is the same with all links included there, as well: www.candacestorch.com .”

CS: “Wow - I really don’t know!!! There are a lot of great DJs I don’t even know about.. I’ll have to tell you in our next interview! “

SM: What made you want to get on the turntables?

SM: Can you name a few other female DJs that have impacted the culture?

CS: “I was making mixes since age 12 and in the music business for years writing, singing, & coproducing. My partner and I had a label & I learned

CS: “Serato software and DDJ-SX2 controller is my favorite.” SM: Are you single? How is the dating life for the female DJ? CS: “You need someone who understands if you post pictures at a party or a video it’s for business and client relationship purposes, at least for me, and that can be challenging. I’m single as of now.” SM: Have you done radio? Do you possibly see a future for yourself in radio? the culture as we speak! “ SM: What genres of music do you prefer to play? CS: “Urban music. I’m a NY hip hop/r&b girl at heart. I was making R&B mixes at age 12 locked away in my bedroom. I play open format meaning; Hip hop, house, R&b, classics, and in Miami you must know your latin & reggaeton. I enjoy it all but likely have my most fun when it’s time for Caribbean music.. gimme the dancehall!”

CS: “Yes, I have done radio when I first started in 2016. I had a show called ‘The Pretty & Gritty Show’ on multiple online stations: Spinz FM, Griind FM, Islandah Radio and others.. It’s cool, but not something I’m focusing on as of now. I occasionally do featured mixes that are on my Soundcloud. (www. soundcloud.com/candacestorch).” SM: What did you think about the recent influx of successful female executives in the music and entertainment industry?

SM: Who are your favorite female producers?

CS: “It’s great!! the more the merrier!! “

CS: “I think as far as house/EDM music Nora En Pure is really cool. “

SM: Does “SEXY” sell being a female DJ or does it have its disadvantages?

SM: Tell us about your most memorable venue or party. I’m sure you have some stories to share.

CS: “Sex always sells, let’s be honest. But sex doesn’t equal talent and you can’t fool people. Everyone has to find what their comfort zone is and be true to themself. “

CS: “One of my goals as a DJ when I moved to Miami was to play at LIV. I did. That was a great night! When you have the crowd and everything is flowing there is nothing like it. “ SM: What do you see in the future for female DJs? CS: “It’s a growing trend and I see more females doing their thing.. I think the future is limitless as far as producing music, being successful in the business and creating a tight sense of community.” SM: When spinning records what is your favorite software and gear?

46 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021

SM: How did social distancing affect the way you interact with your fan base, how did you adapt? CS: “I built my website during the pandemic, organized my music, and did personal goal setting. It was hard to do live streams because the limitations would cut you off of Facebook & IG. I used to do live streams on Hype Life Magazine and got 30,000 -100,000K views per week. I am still getting copyright notifications from a few years ago, so that was a tremendous roadblock because I didn’t want my accounts deleted. I have yet to move over to Twitch.”

PIPIN' HOT SERVING IT UP.

48 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021

In 2019 Biscits was one of the top 10 selling artists on Beatport. He currently receives over half a million monthly streams across multiple platforms. He’s been releasing music via Sweat it Out and Solotoko including collaborations with Solotoko’s head honcho Sonny Fodera. Prior to the Covid -19 pandemic, Biscits enjoyed a solid year of touring across the world which included Listen Out Festival in Australia, Track So Boa Festival in Brazil and Warehouse Project in Manchester supporting the likes of Fisher, Sonny Fodera, Solardo, Diplo and many more. 2020 was also a productive year with a steady flow of releases on Diplo’s Higher Ground, Sonny’s Solotoko and Australia’s Sweat It Out. Now, half way through 2021, Biscits continues to roll out his killer music, which he goes into with this Q&A session, as well as talking about his first meeting with Diplo, his latest singles and his breakout year in 2019.

By Joseph Arthur Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021 | 49

ON FIRST MEETING DIPLO When did you first realize that you wanted to become a professional music producer? BISCITS: “When I was 17 years old, I went on holiday to Ibiza and had my first club experiences. Also later that year I went to the Ed Banger Records 6th birthday party in London, I was completely blown away and just knew that I had to try and get involved anyway I could! “ How long have you been producing music? Have you had formal training /education in music production? BISCITS: “I’ve been producing music for about 12 years now, Most of which was me just going round in circles and getting everything wrong, It’s only in the past 5 years I would say that things have started

48 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021

to click. I studied Digital Music at Solent University in Southampton UK, Which is a course specifically geared towards becoming a modern day electronic music producer. It was a great experience but I would say, much like many other University courses, you get out of it what you put in. I have realistically learnt more as a producer from Youtube and self driven learning.” Who are some of your favorite contemporary artists that are influencing your musical creations and how so? BISCITS: “My musical influences are incredibly varied, from Daft Punk and Justice to The Beatles and Queen. But as far as contemporary electronic music I would have to say - Chris Lake, Martin Ikin, Fisher, Sonny Fodera, Camelphat and Solardo. As boring/

MY FIRST INTERACTION WITH HIM WAS WHEN A VIDEO WENT VIRAL OF HIM TAKING A TOILET BREAK MID-SET AND IN THE BACKGROUND YOU COULD HEAR ‘DO IT LIKE THIS,’ WHICH WAS REALLY COOL AND ALSO REALLY WEIRD.”

—BISCITS

classic as that list sounds there’s a reason that these are the top guys and it should not be overlooked how good they truly are.” How did you come up with your ‘Stage Name” Biscits? BISCITS: “This was a long process, that I still sometimes question to this day! I have always liked food related names, One of my previous projects was ‘GoldTop’ after the type of milk. I thought Biscits was a good balance of Britishness and quirkiness, I also didn’t use the ‘U’ in the spelling in order to make it a unique search term.” 2019 appears to be a “breakout” year for you as a top ten selling artist on Beatport. How did you reach that level of achievement?

BISCITS: “2019 was definitely my breakout year on Beatport! I had been making solid progress in the world of Tech House in 2018 and then the turning point was releasing ‘Do It Like This’ on Solotoko records. I had been sending demos out to lots of labels and Sonny Fodera was pretty much one of the only people to give me a shot! In the build up to that release some videos of Fisher and Sonny Fodera playing the track circulated on Instagram which took that release to next level.” Tell us about your relationship with Diplo? BISCITS: “My first interaction with him was when a video went viral of him taking a toilet break mid set and in the background you could hear ‘Do It Like This’, which was really cool and also really weird. I then met Dippers when I was touring Australia in 2019, I had a

Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021 | 49

chance to Hang out with him a couple of times backstage and he was really chill and down to earth! I then sent him a few demos which he ended up releasing on his label Higher Ground. Hopefully I can work with him in the future, I’d love to get in the studio with him!” With your steady stream of releases this Spring, would you say that is the result of the performance restrictions due to the pandemic? BISCITS: “The pandemic has been a great creative time for me, It gave me a lot more time to learn and expand my production knowledge. I took a deeper dive into XFer Serum and the new Splice Synth ‘Astra’ which you’ll be hearing a lot in my upcoming releases. I can’t wait to get back into clubs though, I think a really important part of producing is experiencing your music in a live environment, it’s so crucial for inspiration and seeing how a crowd reacts to your music.” Speaking of new releases, hype your latest single “Your Body.” Why should fans buy in to the new the single and what makes it special in your opinion? BISCITS: “I’m so happy with ‘Your Body’, My personal music taste is very broad so it was great to implement some 80s elements into the production. I found the vocals online and knew that I wanted an old school backing for them, So I created an 80s style synth pop backing track which I then chopped up and re-sampled into the final Tech House production. It has a lot of character which some House/ Tech House has been lacking lately.

52 | Beatselector Magazine | July/August 2021

What are you looking most forward to as your career continues to blossom? BISCITS: “The main thing I’m striving for is to be able to travel the world and share music with people. I think meeting new people and experiencing new cultures is very important. I can’t stand the idea of being trapped in a traditional ‘ordinary’ Job/lifestyle, I honestly don’t know how so many people do it! “ What has the global pandemic taught you in regards to humanity and how music can play a role in times of despair? Any words of wisdom that you would like to

share? BISCITS: “It has never been more clear to me that music and art is crucial to people’s sanity. I have also completely lost whatever remaining faith I had in UK politics and leadership. I think it’s so important to remember these times of hardship next time there is an election, so we can hopefully make sure we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past. Also something important for my fellow creators and producers to remember in these vastly digital times is ‘Art Over Algorithm’. Take a step back and try to be aware of what is driving your creative process.”

Ken Bauer shows off his natural talent and skill for music production with "The Sirens Are Calling," which kicks off with huge energetic synths and prominent snares that fill the upper end of soundscape from the get-go, accompanied by entrancing melodies to sweeten the deal which leads us into the first drop. The risers and snare rolls gather momentum with a progressively growing frequency racking up a delicious amount of tension before the release of the drop, unleashing a perfectly executed thudding kick drum paired with the iconic melody to carry the track forward. "Hellraisers Part 1" was released in early May 2021 and has been streamed millions and millions and millions of times on DSPs since its release date. Roughly a month later, "Hellraisers Part 1 (Remixes)" was released. Acknowledging the original album's global success, it was a no brainer leading off the new music reviews with this release. The guys hired Riggo & Piros, Michael Calfan, Morgan Page, Blinkee, Daniel Blume Shift K3Y, Charly Jordan, Danny Quest, Damaged Goods & Los Padres, Leondis, and Franklin on the remix duties delivering the 11 tracks across a diverse set of styles. The original mix of "On My Life" has racked up tens of millions of streams and clearly is the hit single of the original album. Rigos & Piros gets the honor of putting the ideas to work on the popular track and kicks it up ten notches, with a harder sweaty club edge, while keeping true to the original mixes melodic structure, and choruses.

Michael Calfan's take on "Lean on Me" featuring Tinashe shows off a quicker pace and builds short drops with banging piano riffs and rolling drums. Morgan Page places more emphasis on the drum kicks, cymbals, and takes "Do It All Over"'s keyboard melodic tones down a slightlly darker road. Blinkee's bouncy remix of "Stay" followed by Daniel Blume's remix of "Between Our Hearts" brings you to the hafway point of the album. Shift K3Y features on the original and take the remix of "Heaven" in to a highly polished banger, one of the highlights of the project. Charly Jordan heightens the dope bassline and the rolling snares that dominate and showcase on the track. "Wish It Was Me" remixed by Danny Quest, followed by Damaged Goods & Los Padres brilliant remix of "Mathematics," Leondis' "Hate You + Love You," and Franklin's closing remix of "Washed Up" are all dressed up and primed for the dance floor. The debut original album has enjoyed tremendous success and the timimg of the release of this collection of remixes couldn't be more perfect. As the venues reopen, the diversity of dance flavors he remixes offer twill attract DJs of all stature and fill dancefloors. Whether you prefer Melodic Techno, Melodic House or Trance, as Odyssey is described, one thing is obvious, Holly North has given the world a beautiful collection of songs to take you, the listener, on a beautiful musical trip. REVIEWS ALBUMS original - of the origins - in a literal sense. In “Ludwig” it’s the strength of the beat, created through a hybrid of real drums and drum machines, that sets the tone for each track. The album’s title also suggests the importance of this percussive element; Ludwig drum sets were made world-famous by Ringo Starr in the 60s as well as being one of Stimming’s first instruments. As one of the album’s first tracks, “Pidgeons” acts as an introduction to the new sound territories Stimming explores with “Ludwig.” The tune is a slow, trip-hop start to a world where real, organic instruments

STIMMING LUDWIG STIMMING

 Ludwig is Stimming’s 6th studio album, and is described as breaking new grounds for the producer. The new album looks beyond the clubs where Stimming built a solid, decadeslong career as part of the Diynamic family taking flight on a personal, self-released journey. Perhaps it’s only a coincidence that the album’s cover and the names of three tracks remit to flying creatures, or that Stimming has a model A350 in his studio, but throughout the album, there’s definitely a feeling of airiness, a new breathing space acquired by forgoing the need to make the music danceable. This isn’t usual Stimming, where he’s applying his famed technical know-how to sound. In “Ludwig,” the process is somewhat inverse; there’s a sense that Stimming is learning, or re-learning, a thing or two from sound, he’s “looking for the essence,” making the album

and field recordings become skewed in an electronic void. It’s a track filled with surprising tangents and well-crafted tensions, as well as being Ludwig’s lone song with vocals. Stimming met Balbina at The German Music Authors’ Prize, where he was named “Electronic Music Composer of the Year,” and the singer named “Pop Vocalist of the Year.” On the track, “Pidgeons,” Balbina showcases all her abilities through an impressive layered arrangement. Her voice and lyrics add grace and a piercing emotionality to Stimming’s eclectic electronic backdrop, which amidst synth and beats also features field recordings of cooing pigeons. “Pidgeons are a symbol for accepting normal life, in all its banality and challenges. Pigeons are seen as dirty, or gross but they are still living creatures and that in itself carries a certain beauty,” says Stimming. Stimming goes even further explaining “If you look at my last album and you remove the groove, what’s left? This is what’s interesting to me now. I’m not interested in functionality anymore – at least not for now.” —Joseph Arthur

THE SKULL ANTIME  On his third release for ANTIME, Brazilian multidisciplinary producer Luis Fernando, recording as ^L_, offers two tracks plus a remix. “The Skull” opens with a chaotic montage of sound, including machine gun fire, dive bombers, and general mayhem. Once the smell of cordite clears, the main section of electro beat is pushed by surging and swirling washes of sound moving around throughout. The track ends with a soothing ambience that offers a chance to catch one’s breath. Hard hitting stuff, in the vein of Sturqen. “Terror Turbo” is an engaging track with a swinging beat that is pleasantly reminiscent of Cusp’s

“Uranium.” The looped vocal sample, driving bassline, and interesting synth sounds pulled me right in to deliver me to the surprising and unexpected sax solo ending. The Quizzik remix of “Terror Turbo” offers a tasty variation on the original with its permutations and interesting arrangement. Nearly a new piece, but still faithful to the source material. These tracks are well produced. An aspect that appeals to me is a sense of composition I often don’t experience in electronic music. There is a beginning, middle and ending that tells me some thought and intelligence went into the music. Great stuff. —Craig Wharton

WAX MOTIF

THRILLS Featuring Jaxon Rose DIVIDED SOULS  Wax Motif’s latest single “Thrills,” from his forthcoming album, is a bass house track featuring vocals from rising star Jaxon Rose. The new single has a slow tempo and somewhat low-key, yet it has a killer dose of pulsing bass and beats just behind the “suggestive” lyrics performed by Rose. “The song always gives me that LA Downtown late-night ‘going home from a party’ feel, and at the time, my life felt really transitional like that, lots of partying, meeting new people and

going new places,” says Wax Motif. “On the album, it’s one of the tracks that feels like an important piece of my whole story so far and always makes me feel like it’s my first night out clubbing in Hollywood again.” For now, “Thrills” will have to do and serve as a go to for a potent dose of vocal-fueled house that will have to hold us fans and bass junkies over until the next Wax Motif release. —Catherine Strickland

KRYDER & NATALIE SHAY RAPTURE BLACKHOLE RECORDINGS



“Rapture”… Yeah, that’s right, that“Rapture.” The one that 20 years back saw iiO (Markus Moser & Nadia Ali) usher in a cooler, deeper, more imaginative era of dance music songwriting. Since it’s been a piece of music that everyone from Avicii to Nadia herself have returned to, as “Rapture’” continues to enthral audiences far & wide. Ideal material for an artist as free-range as Kryder, his interpretation retains the original’s stylistic ambiguity, setting its feel within an ever-shifting nexus of melodic, trance and house. Natalie Shay meanwhile brings a vocal delivery, that manages to both subtly channel Nadia Ali’s iconic tone, whilst also leaving her own mark on the track. The purring allure of her opening minutes and verses allow it time to smoulder, before that unforgettable chorus finally sets light to the room. —Tim Stark
