9-1-1 caller, Oscar Carrillo, added to McDade lawsuit; has yet to be served By Terry Miller Attorney Caree Harper (representing Kendrec McDade’s father, Kenneth) added Oscar Carrillo to the list of defendants in the federal civil rights lawsuit filed earlier last year against the city of Pasadena in the wake of the shooting that killed McDade on March 24 last year. Carrillo has admitted that he lied on a 9-1-1 call on March 24 when he claimed McDade and a teen accomplice robbed him at gunpoint. Carrillo, an undocumented immigrant, has never been charged with a crime in connection with McDade’s death. The family of the slain teenager hope to win a judgePlease see page 9

Sierra Madre Rose Float Association’s independent entry recognized for colorful floral presentation Wins Isabella Coleman trophy

By Jim E. Winburn For the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, it was their boundless imagination that caught the Rose Parade judges’ attention. The association’s 2013 float entry, “The Sky’s the Limit,” won the Isabella Coleman Trophy for best presentation of color and color harmony through floral use. The Rose Parade award is Sierra Madre’s 6th one in the last seven years. Living up to the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade’s peppy theme - “Oh, the Places You'll Go!” - the Sierra Madre float seized the moment with the youthful display of a 55-foot long floral kite floating among bluebirds, rainbows and stars. Sierra Madre’s float presented one of the most densely flowered entries in the parade, according to a description provided to parade officials by Kay Sappington, the float’s decoration director. The city’s float entry was recognized as a 2013 Rose Parade Float Trophy Winner for its outstanding artistic merit in design and floral presentation. The thrill of participating in the Rose Parade alone was a positive affirmation for the local community as the city begins its yearlong Centennial celebration. Approximately 200 plus people attended a rally outside All Saints Church on Sunday afternoon, in a unifying effort to bring peace to a community that has been torn apart by gun violence in the past year. Outside the church community activists and law enforcement officials asked Pasadena and Altadena residents to play a major role in promoting peace in their communities and turning potential gang member around and offering alternatives to an otherwise destructive lifestyle.

Dorothy's Place This year’s going to be different

By Dorothy Denne Time to close the old calendar and open the new. This year is going to be different. I’ll get the birthdays, theater dates and all that stuff written in right away. I save the old one to serve as a diary of the year that has just slipped by. I slide the heel of my hand down the new. It won’t lie flat. Give it a couple of days. On to the second project of the new year. I take the tinsel and ornaments from the tree and replace them in their boxes. No more needles pemanently imbedded in the carpet since we’ve gone artificial but I still get pricked as I fold the tree branches. I visually inventory the

decorations on the mantle and the tables. This is the year I’m finally going to get rid of some of the older ones, the bent, the chipped, the dusty. First the reindeer with the broken leg. Rolly was three that year. He thought all four legs should be straight. These little snowmen haven’t been white for years, I guess. Greg made them when he was in kindergarten. How many times have I reglittered this old angel? I remember the night Bob sat her by my plate after we had that little tiff. He said I was an angel for giving in. It’s no use. Maybe next year. Up to the attic with all! While I’m in the mood, I’ll write some thank you notes. Not so many to write this year since most of us have decided that the times we share are better than gifts we don’t know what to do

with. Those cute little cat notecards I saw in the mall would be perfect to write my thank yous in. I’ll run over later this week and buy a box. Now I can sit down, drink a glass of wine and reread all the Christmas cards and notes. Then I’ll sort them into those that call for a response, those I want to save for early display next year, and those I will reluctantly toss. I drank that glass of wine, then I must have dozed off. A little wine always makes me sleepy. I’ve only gone through about half of my cards. I’ll finish them later. There is some leftover ham in the fridge. I think I’ll have a ham sandwich and the last of the Christmas cookies. Tomorrow I start my diet. This Year’s Going To Be Different.

We’re here in Minnesota to gather secrets of staying young from my mother Elsa Sneider, age 99. This woman has endured wars, escapes from the Russians, losing family and friends. She has trusted God to deliver her through many trials and tests in her 99 years. We came back to celebrate her 99th birthday in snow covered Bloomington, Minnesota with postcard scenes everywhere. She wanted to impart some wisdom to us that can help you as well as your family in the year 2013. As professional fitness trainers we have learned that living is a matter of balance. One should have a spiritual relationship with his Creator. One should have a family relationship if possible. One should have a personal fitness program that keeps him healthy and well. Nutrition is very important because healthy food is good medicine. Using your mind in creative activities like reading, writing, and positive games and having a relationship with like minded people that are positive, uplifting and helpful will extend your life. These are some of the principles that I learned from my mother. We are currently staying with my brother Karl and Andra. They are special education teachers. They have given us some valuable information on how to have healthy, happy, and positive children that are struggling with challenges in living. Their philosophy is similar to my mother’s. Love them and tell them that they are valuable in life. Continually reinforce this loving attitude in daily contact in education as well as sports and develop a family interaction with these children.

My mother taught my brother and me to reach out and help those that are in need. During the war my mother said that there were women around her who panicked when the bombs fell but she was a rock of confidence. My mother at age 7 was a shepard girl in Latvia. She took care of animals on a large farm. This responsibility gave her confidence in helping her children and family. We survived the brutality of World War II with her tenacious never give up attitude that brought us to the United States of America. I had an older brother John, younger brother Karl and sister Ilse that still to this day depend on my mother’s wisdom, courage, and character. What can you do in your personal life as well as your family life in the year 2013 to live a positive, healthy, life? Here are 7 positive points to encourage you to be the best that you can be: 1. Trust

God. He’s there to guide you. 2. Start a healthy fitness program. Get out and use your body by walking, cycling, swimming, Zumba dancing, dumbbell circuit program as well as other options. We are here to help you at Sneiders Family Fitness. 3. You are what you eat. 4. Fill your mind with positive activities. 5. Let your life be a light to others. 6. Be inspired by your ancestors, like my mother Elsa who trusted God to see her through all the way to the age of 99. 7. Write out your goals for the year 2013. Writing out goals is a great way to be a success. DO IT NOW! Harry and Sarah Sneider are professional fitness trainers, educators, parents, grandparents, motivational speakers, as well as writers of this weekly column to motivate you to your full potential. Ray Collins, the founder of Mothers of Invention and author of the “Memories of El Monte” lyrics died December 24 of a heart attack, Rolling Stone magazine reported. He was in his 70s. The El Monte Legion Stadium Memorabilia posted a Facebook status

that read: “We would like to pay our respects to the family and friends of Ray Collins, founding member of the Mothers of Invention and co-writter of the classic song “Memories of El Monte.” News reports place his passing on 12/24/12 in Ontario, CA. Ray you made music history. Gracias.”

Collins is remembered also sitting on sidewalk benches in his hometown city of Claremont, CA, driving taxis in Los Angeles, and washing dishes in Hawaii. He did enjoy a few royalty moneys for his famous lyrics, which became a hit to the tune of The Penguin’s “Earth Angel.”

ACLU to discuss domestic drone surveillance in Pasadena Like history has never seen before, the right to and reasonable expectation of privacy is in jeopardy as the imminence of increased domestic drone use looms over the American public. On January 8. A local branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will host an event in Pasadena at which there will be discourse in regards to domestic drones, surveillance and their implications on individual privacy. In Protecting Privacy From Aerial Surveillance: Recommendations for Government Use of Drone Aircraft, the ACLU claims that “interest in deploying drones among police departments is increasing, and our privacy laws are not strong enough to ensure that the new technology will be used responsibly and consistently with democratic values.” Unmanned, remotecontrolled aerial surveillance drones range in size from as small as a bird to as large as a jet and are able to employ a range of faculties including powerful lenses that allow high resolution image capture from a great distance; thermal and ultraviolet imaging that allow humans and animals to be seen at night; radar technologies that allow visibility through walls and into private spaces and homes; and video analytics such as facial

By Arianna Locatell recognition software, license plate readers, and similar programs that track and identify movement patterns. Surveillance drones have already been deployed in U.S. skies by public and private entities. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Air Force, Customs & Border Protection, police departments, college universities and numerous research agencies have been authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly drones. Data collected by government agencies without a warrant can be held for up to 90 days for examination and agencies are able to surveil targeted groups of people as well as individuals considered suspicious with consent from the Secretary of Defense. Drones have an unlimited array of potential uses and could serve the country positively or negatively. Some universities, states and local agencies intend to apply drone use to fighting fires, search and rescue missions, mapping, studying meteorological conditions and wildlife conservation. However, at present, no regulations exist that protect citizens privacy rights. The ACLU incisively indicates that “we need a system of rules to ensure that we can enjoy the benefits of this technology without bring-

Bill Brooks memorial Friday, Jan. 4 A memorial service for William “Bill” Copland Brooks will be held on Friday, January 4 at Live Oak Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. Brooks, 83, died on November 29 of this year in Arcadia. He had been hospitalized after a fall at his Monrovia home on two weeks earlier. Brooks, who had been a resident of Monrovia for 35 years, was perhaps best known locally for his involvement with the Monrovia- Duarte Elks Lodge #1427. He had been a member of the Lodge for over 25 years and had been a trustee for twenty of those years. He was a veteran of the US Army and was therefore involved with the American Legion, Arcadia chapter, and he Monrovia Veterans of Foreign Wars. With these groups and with the Elks,

Brooks spent many volunteer hours. Brooks was also known for his custom fishing rods which he made for over 50 years. For him, it was more than a hobby, it was a passion. Flowers were another of his hobbies. An avid gardener, Brooks grew Plumeria and Roses, and was especially proud of his orchids Brooks was preceded in death by his parents, sister Heater and his son Ian. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jean and several nieces and nephews. Following the graveside service at Live Oak, there will also be a memorial service at the Elks Lodge in Duarte at 2 :30 p.m. Live Oak is located at 200 E. Duarte Rd in Monrovia. The lodge is located at 2436 Huntington Drive in Duarte.

ing us a large step closer to a ‘surveillance society’ in which our every move is monitored, tracked, recorded, and scrutinized by the authorities.” By 2020, the FAA projects there will be at least 30,000 drones in the U.S. skies. If left unregulated, that means at least 30,000 opportunities for the American citizen to be relentlessly monitored, personally tracked, or assaulted. The ACLU has concerns of voyeurism, prejudiced tracking, and indiscriminate mass surveillance that would be irrelevant to criminal investigations and would potentially violate citizens’ fourth amendment rights. The ACLU’s discussion on domestic drone use will be an important reminder of civil liberties and will offer imperative awareness of public surveillance. The event will be held in Pasadena at Neighborhood Church, located 301 N. Orange Grove Ave from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. The event is free and open to the public.

provided inspiration for this year’s theme. “The theme can be interpreted as a celebration of accomplishment, discovery and travel of course, but equally valid is its implicit call to action,” said Bixby. “We think Dr. Goodall’s life story is a testament to the sense of adventure and openness to possibility that this phrase suggests: As a young woman, she defied convention to follow her dreams, and she has committed herself to a life of global citizenship, inspiring children and adults alike along the way.” This year’s Rose Queen is 17-year-old Pasadena native and high school student Vanessa Manjarrez. Having presided over the annual celebration each year since 1930, the queen and Rose Princesses are selected in a month-long process from hundreds of local women between the ages of 17 and 21 to participate as a member of the Royal Court. Float preparation is one of the greatest challenges of the Rose Parade. Organizers, designers, engineers and volunteers spend months planning and constructing their individual float - only to labor over several hectic days to apply the final decoration to their parade entry. All surfaces are required to be covered with natural materials. And the average cost of a float can be several hundred thousand dollars in what amounts to a high-visibility experience. Media sources have put the number of Americans who watch the Rose Parade on television at 39 million people, while claiming hundreds of millions more view the event from 220 countries around the world. The parade has come a long ways since its debut in 1890, when it styled itself from a similar event in France. The pioneers of the contemporary Rose Parade originally sought to show off Southern California’s sunny winter weather, while featuring flower-covered carriages. More information on San Gabriel’s Centennial Celebration can be found on the city’s website at www.sangabriel100.com.

Chai and Kelly Ngo were chosen based on their community involvement. Mayor Kevin B. Sawkins, who co-chairs the San Gabriel Centennial Committee along with Mary Cammarano, president of the San Gabriel Historical Association, said the generous efforts of many donors and sponsors from the community have made the float’s success possible. “We were really committed to doing it without city funds. So instead of city tax dollars, we wanted to have it supported entirely by the community community organizations, residents and businesses,” Sawkins said earlier at a VIP reception held around the unfinished float at the Rose Bowl. The Float Committee, co-chaired by Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Perez and San Gabriel resident Pam Petievich, pulled the whole project together by organizing nearly 100 volunteers working on different tasks, including the critical decision of going with Paradiso Parade Floats, which is headed up by Creative Director Charles Meier. Rose Parade officials anticipated a turnout of more than 700,000 people, and those in attendance believed the event easily drew an estimated one million spectators. The 124th Tournament of Roses Parade included a lineup of 42 floats, 23 bands, and 21 equestrian units, all of which received cheers and applause from viewers along the 5-and-a-half mile parade route along Colorado Boulevard. The 2013 theme for the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade was “Oh, the Places You'll Go!” Officials selected the peppy title for its ambitious take on seizing the moment by throwing off the realistic cares of our daily lives and charging forth with youthful confidence. Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, the world famous primatologist and animal welfare advocate, served as Grand Marshal of the 2013 Tournament of Roses while riding in a horsedrawn carriage covered with roses and ferns. According to Tournament of Roses President Sally Bixby, Dr. Goodall

“So there's been a dream percolating in a big segment of our community for many years, and they wanted to have another bite of the apple - another chance to participate in that grand floral festival.” Preston said the city’s float, more than two years in the making, cost $150,000 to build, not counting the $5,000 entry fee to participate in the Tournament of Roses. What’s really inspiring is that the money was fully raised by community sponsors and individual donors - not city funding. The float’s awardwinning design and floral presentation evokes the romance of early California that is taken straight out of San Gabriel’s heritage. The float design is modeled after the historic Camino Real, where San Gabriel has played an important role in many journeys over the decades. The elegant Spanishstyle architecture of the city’s iconic Grapevine Arbor frames the design while a pair of oxen draws a grape-filled cart to the wine press. The float features animation, including the oxen nodding their heads and the wheels of the cart turning. Built by Paradiso Parade Floats, the Rose Parade's first new float builder in 18 years, the float showcased an impressive array of fresh flowers in fiery oranges, yellows and reds. The float also featured an abundance of roses accented with a wide variety of orchids, strelitzia, protea and leucadendron bloom in a lush garden landscape. The design also incorporated fresh produce, including oranges, lemons, limes and hundreds of pounds of grapes. San Gabriel’s entry also included a diverse crew of float riders who embody the city's rich past and present, featuring Mayor Kevin Sawkins steering the ox cart, Anthony Morales as chief of the Tongva people - San Gabriel's first inhabitants, Camila Lopez - who also traces her bloodline back to the Tongva people, and Father Bruce Wellems of the San Gabriel Mission. Guillermo Bert: Encoded Textiles through Feb. 24, 2013

Faces of 2012

The Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) is proud to present Guillermo Bert: Encoded Textiles, an exhibition that explores the latest generation of bar codes (QR codes), their capacity to hold 200 times more information than traditional bar codes, and the graphic similarities between the bar codes and the textiles of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The exhibition examines technology, language, cultural heritage, and capitalism seeking to open a dialogue about the effects of globalization on the world’s indigenous population. Bert’s innovative use of an advanced technology is to record the history of a marginalized culture, so that these stories do not fade away. The tapestries from these commu-

Inspired by the bar code’s universality, Bert translates political, religious, social, and artistic entities into patterns of elongated vertical bands woven into tapestries. The tapestries are created with natural wool and dyes that are either made, bought or traded locally, using different sized threads, stitching techniques and distinctive colors. Guillermo Bert was born in Chile in 1959, studied art at the Catholic University of Santiago and then relocated to reside in Los Angeles. For the past two decades his art has been widely exhibited and collected by numerous museums in the United

Temple City Neighborhood Watch Program resumes meetings - Jan. 10 It is always a good idea to know who your neighbors are because your connection is not just limited to the adjoining land your houses are built on. In times of need or emergency, the neighbor next door can play a crucial role as compared to a family member who lives away, even if just a few minutes away. The success of maintaining a good and safe neighborhood relies on neighbors watching each other’s back. Only when an entire neighborhood unite together can we fend off those who want to steal or destroy the things we have all worked so hard for, such as our homes and

our possessions. More importantly, having a good and safe neighborhood ensures that the schools are good and safe as well, which then in turn helps maintain or increase property value. These all go hand-in-hand. The economy has gone global, so it is also time for us to cross the property line and get to know our own neighbors again! The Temple City Neighborhood Watch Program is getting a new life under the leadership of Deputy Rick Adams of the Temple Sheriff’s Station in conjunction with Public Safety Officer Bryan Ariizumi of Temple City. We need everyone to join forc-

es with us in order to help make Temple City an even safer place to live where the crooks won’t dare to come! KALM talent group artist to perform new single live at Genghis Cohen in West Hollywood, California Pop-folk-indie artist Katie Ekin, who recently signed with KALM Talent Group, has released the first single and title track of her new EP, “Caught Up In You.” The highly-anticipated song from the awardwinning singer/songwriter, now live on kalmtalentagency.com, is also available for download on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. “I actually came up with the melody for Caught Up In You while driving back from San Francisco after a show. I was so excited, I used my phone’s voice memos to record so I wouldn’t forget it,” said Katie who calls songwriting, not just her passion, but her lifestyle. “As soon as I got home I grabbed my guitar and wrote the song in about 15 minutes. The inspiration was of course about a guy who was kind of oblivious even though I was totally smitten.” Katie will perform “Caught Up In You” live as part of her featured set during the West Coast Songwriters showcase at Genghis Cohen in West Hollywood on Thursday December 13, 2012 beginning at 7:00pm. “Caught Up In You” is the latest in more than 200 original songs written by Katie. The prestigious West Coast Songwriters

California approved a law exempting clergy members opposed to gay marriage from performing same-sex marriage ceremonies. California coaches and administrators in K-12 schools, as well as higher education employees who have regular contact with children, will be required to report suspected child sexual abuse. Another law bans the use of dogs when hunting bobcats or bears. Some young undocu-

mented immigrants will be able to get a driver license. Californians between the ages of 16 and 31 who qualify for President Obama’s work permit program will also be eligible for a license. California voters could potentially register to vote on election day with a provisional ballot, as long as the conditional voter registration is deemed effective. Same-day registration will be permitted once the Secretary of State certifies California’s new statewide

voter database, VoteCal. Two laws ban businesses and schools from demanding that potential employees or students share social media credentials and private content. In the health care sector, another new law mandates that after getting a mammogram, women must be informed if they have dense breast tissue. Effective January 1, 2013 California requires the CO2 detectors be installed in condominiums and apartments.

competitions have led to eight of Katie’s ten awards thus far which include three for Best Performance, four for Best Song and one for the coveted Hollywood Chapter’s Song of the Year. “Katie Ekin has a mature songwriting style that is complimented by a unique ability to transform personal life experiences into award-winning songs,” said KALM Talent Group Founder Kerry Kessel. “There is a compelling raw, no-nonsense style to her

songwriting and music that leaves you wanting more.” And more there will be as Katie and the KALM Talent Group team plan for the next exciting steps in her burgeoning music career. Plans for a debut album of original professionally produced songs will be announced in the near future. Katie Ekin’s original holiday themed song “Underneath The Christmas Tree” can be heard NOW at kalmtalentagency.com.

The San Gabriel Valley Literary Festival Feb. 15-17, 2013 in West Covina’s city hall complex On President’s Weekend, February 15-17, 2013 from 12pm to 9pm every day, the City of West Covina will be hosting the first San Gabriel Valley Literary Festival. The festival will bring poets, fiction writers, children’s writers and artists from the Los Angeles area and all over the world to present their work to the people of the San Gabriel Valley. The festival will also focus on the work of local writers, and all residents are invited to participate in open mics and readings featuring their work. Writers and poets being featured include Eloise Klein Healy, the newly

800 new laws now in effect in California

named poet laureate of Los Angeles, Suzanne Lummis, a central figure of Los Angeles, Tony Barnstone and international writers like T. Anders Carson from Canada and Simon Fruelund, one of Denmark’s best selling fiction writers. There will be days focused on mystery writers, graphic novelists, and children’s authors along with booths for publishers, bookstores, writers, magazines, and artists. The mission of the literary festival is to create an egalitarian environment where the work of the writers of the San Gabriel Valley is celebrated and recognized by the world-wide

literary community. The festival will take place February 15-17, 2013 at the West Covina City Hall complex from 12 noon to 9 pm each day. The festival is free and there is ample free parking in the City Hall parking structure. The San Gabriel Valley Literary Festival http:// sgvlitfest.com/ is proud to be partnering with the City of West Covina http://www. westcovina.org/, the West Covina Library http://www. colapublib.org/libs/wcovina/ index.php, the Friends of the West Covina Library http://www.colapublib.org/ support/friends.html, and Gatsby Books http://www. gatsbybooks.com/.

Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) released the following statement after the House passed the Senate legislation to make tax cuts for the middle class permanent, extend critical tax credits for working families, and avert the so-called “fiscal cliff”: “After months of negotiating, every middle class American can rest easier knowing that their taxes will not spike in 2013. The deal

I voted for asks everyone to pay a fair rate while safeguarding earned benefits like Medicare and Social Security that the American people have paid into and deserve to have. In addition, it extended unemployment benefits for another year, providing a crucial support line for countless people still struggling through this slow economy. “While we have averted the so-called ‘fiscal cliff,’

Americans deserve more from their elected Representatives than what this Congress delivered. By refusing to negotiate until the very last minute, House Republicans brought us to the verge of disaster. There is no excuse for this kind of political brinksmanship, and I urge all of my colleagues to seek the common ground that is needed for our Democracy to thrive.”

Sierra Madre Rose Float

Continued from page 1

After designing many award-winning floats for Sierra Madre, Charles Meier started a new float-building company, Paradiso Parade Floats. Out of gratitude for Sierra Madre’s years of love and support, Meier volunteered to help the association with the development of this year's design from his gratitude for Sierra Madre’s many years of support. It is this kind of warm and family environment that has created a “welcoming atmosphere for volunteers of all ages,” according to a statement by the association. Sierra Madre’s independent float operation consists of a core group of 11 people, who do most of the work throughout the year - all preparing for the many volunteers to show up the final week to help apply the flowers. In this annual tradition, the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association designs, builds, decorates and completely funds the community’s parade entry. Sierra Madre’s long tradition in the parade dates back to 1917, and the city has had a

float entry every year since 1957. As princesses of the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, Aliya Crochetiere, Kaitlin Liston and Megan Perley, all road on the tail of the kite in the Rose Parade on Tuesday. The three ladies also serve as community ambassadors in their role as princesses, representing the Rose Float Association before the Sierra Madre City Council and local service organizations and clubs. Parade officials anticipated a turnout of more than 700,000 people, and those in attendance believed the event easily drew an estimated one million spectators. The 124th Tournament of Roses Parade included a lineup of 42 floats, 23 bands, and 21 equestrian units, all of which received cheers and applause from viewers along the 5-anda-half mile parade route along Colorado Boulevard. Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, the world famous primatologist and animal welfare advocate, served as Grand Marshal of the 2013 Tournament of Roses while

riding in a horse-drawn carriage covered with roses and ferns. According to Tournament of Roses President Sally Bixby, Dr. Goodall provided inspiration for this year’s theme. “We think Dr. Goodall’s life story is a testament to the sense of adventure and openness to possibility that this phrase suggests: As a young woman, she defied convention to follow her dreams, and she has committed herself to a life of global citizenship, inspiring children and adults alike along the way,” said Bixby. This year’s Rose Queen is 17-year-old Pasadena native and high school student Vanessa Manjarrez. Having presided over the annual celebration each year since 1930, the queen and Rose Princesses are selected in a month-long process from hundreds of local women between the ages of 17 and 21 to participate as a member of the Royal Court. Float preparation is one of the greatest challenges of the Rose Parade. And the average cost of a float can be several hundred

thousand dollars in what amounts to a high-visibility experience. Media sources have put the number of Americans who watch the Rose Parade on television at 39 million people, while claiming hundreds of millions more view the event from 220 countries around the world. The parade has come

a long ways since its debut in 1890, when it styled itself from a similar event in France. The pioneers of the contemporary Rose Parade originally sought to show off Southern California’s sunny winter weather, while featuring flower-covered carriages. The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association is

already beginning to review designs for its 2014 float, and its next meeting will be held on Feb. 3. For more information, or to volunteer, call RE(626) 3557005 or visit themDUConline at ED www.smrosefloat.org.PRICEThe Barn, where all float activity takes place, is at 587 E. Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain patients may find they key to relief in Pasadena By Terry Miller Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley is well known for above average hospitals with exceptional trauma units as awell as doctors and specialists in many fields, cancer research facilities and a major scientific lab known as JPL among its other selling points. Also within our reach is the Pasadena Rehabilitation Institute (PRI) at 1017 South Fair Oaks. Within these healing walls works a quiet, kind and extremely gifted Chiropractor, Nazee Rofagha, DC, CEAS at the Family Chiropractic Wellness Center. A Doctor of Chiropractic since 1995, Nazee Rofagha (we call her Dr. Nazee), truly has a gift of healing not only in her hands but her heart. Ever wanting to find new ways to improve on therapy for her patients, Dr. Rofagha contunues that eternal quest and seems to have an insatiatable thirst for knowledge in non-invasive pain relief and techniques. The popular and charistmatic chiropractor recently became aware of a new technique for pain and stress relief know as NRCT ( Neurologic Relief Centers Technique ) which can release the tension in the meninges and subsequently releasing irritation to the nerves which are ultimately causing the brain to tell you where the pain is. The essence of the program works with the CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid). According to literature published by NRCT “the vast majority of health problems other than infectious diseases could be

Just days before the most famous parade in the country, members of the Arroyo High School Marching Band were helping put the last touches on the AIDS Foundation Healthcare float and the New Balance float at a Fiesta Float location in the city of Irwindale. Last week they were stripping moss, cutting pine needles and branches, gluing onion seeds to the structures, during long days that start at 8 a.m. with a second shift that ends at 11 p.m. For the Arroyo Marching Band working means a considerable amount of funding for their music program, so all of the band members, as well as several parents, dedicate what could have been their vacation time to this endeavor.

It is certainly physical work that at times has them carrying five feet tall trees up and about, but the spirits are high and the youngsters enjoy the camaraderie. The

work was completed by New Year’s Eve, when the floats were transported to Pasadena for their big moment in the spotlight New Year’s Day

stress and neurological in nature.” Having had more than my fair share of pain in recent years, this reporter decided to see for himself if, in fact, this NRCT might be an answer I was looking for. After my initial examination/consultation Dr. Nazee asked me what my pain scale was (ie 1-10) it was about 5 this particular morning. The doctor placed her hands carefully on my neck and used some pressure in an effort to relieve some leg/knee pain I had been experiencing. The results were actually more profound than I initially thought. I can, without reservation, say I could efforlessly walk down the stairs from her office to my car where

I had a few minutes earlier used the elevator over the stairs due to the pain. I also felt more alert which is intersting as I only had one cup of coffee this given morning and not a particularly great sleep the previous night. The NRCT is non invasive and many people such as myself respond immediately or within a short period of time. Some of the more common maladies that seem to respond to NRCT air Fibromyalgia, numbness, migraines headaches, forgettfullness, burning senstaions, insomnia and other pain anywhere in the body including the hands and feet. Monrovia Police Department Providing Police Presence at City Schools Our hearts go out to all touched by the tragedy that has occurred in Newtown,

Connecticut. This horrific event has affected us all. Safety in our schools has always been, and continues to be, a high priority for law enforcement. In response to this senseless act of violence, the Monrovia Police Department is providing an increased police presence at schools throughout the city. Patrol officers have been instructed to periodically visit and touch base with all schools in the city during daytime hours. The visits will be random and will occur at various times and locations. This increased visibility is meant to help comfort and calm the fears of the children, parents, and school staff, alike. The Monrovia Police Department trains annually to deal with incidents of violence that might occur at a school. The department has a tremendous collaborative working relationship with the Monrovia Unified School District. Police Department and school staff meet and train regularly to ensure employees are prepared to deal with these rare, but critical, types of incidents. Police officers conduct scenario training, yearly, at actual school campuses throughout the district, and each school in the district has prepared a crisis response box for the Police Department with information necessary to deal, immediately, with any incident at any school.

Sierra Madre PD

December 26 At approximately 8pm, unknown suspect(s) smashed the rear window of a vehicle parked in a carport in the 100 block of East Highland Avenue. A neighbor reported seeing a black Toyota Echo or similar type vehicle parked in the alleyway just minutes before hearing the window being smashed. During the night, unknown suspect(s) entered an unsecured apartment located in the 300 block of North Lima Street and selectively rummaged through a desk and backpack. The apartment owner was asleep in an adjacent room and discovered the crime when he woke the next morning. Some of the victim’s belongings were found scatteredoutside around the lot and it appears the suspect(s) also entered an unsecured garage located on the property. Several items of value were left untouched and at this time only a cell phone and motorcycle helmet are reported missing. During the same evening, a

vehicle was stolen from a carport in the 700 block of west Sierra Madre Boulevard. The victim parked the vehicle at approximately 11pm and discovered it missing at 8:30am the following morning. The vehicle was locked and all the vehicle keys have been accounted for. December 27 At 11pm, a Sierra Madre Police unit was eastbound on the 210 Freeway at Rosemead; stuck in heavy traffic that was the result of Gold Line construction. The officer’s attention was drawn to a Red Honda Civic also stopped in traffic. The officer made a license plate check and learned that the vehicle was a reported stolen vehicle from El Monte. The driver maneuvered the Honda over to the number 2 lane in a manner that suggested he was trying to evade the officer in this congestion. As the officer was attempting to change lanes, the suspect suddenly cut across the number 3 and 4 lanes and onto the auxiliary exit only lane for Baldwin Avenue. The suspect used this lane to accelerate away from the officer. In doing this, the suspect nearly collided with several stopped vehicles and used the shoulder of the freeway to go around several vehicles. The officer initiated a vehicle pursuit of the suspect and communicated the situation to Arcadia and Sierra Madre police units. The suspect exited the freeway at Baldwin Avenue travelling at an unsafe speed and turned northbound. Additional Sierra Madre PD units were waiting at the bottom of the ramp and joined the pursuit. The pursuit travelled north on Baldwin Avenue, west onto Foothill Boulevard and then north again on Baldwin Avenue. The suspect turned left into the Anoakia Housing Complex, abandoned the vehicle and ran into the housing complex after scaling a wall. Units from Arcadia PD assisted in cordoning off the area and within minutes the suspect was observed walking in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Don Pablo. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. The suspect (Terrance Draper, 28 years of age) was arrested for Grand Theft Auto and booked at Pasadena Jail. Additional charges for possession of Methamphetamine and possession of stolen property will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
