Police Pursuit in Pasadena Results in Mother and Child Killed

On the eve of Christmas, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced that he has granted 79 pardons. The individuals granted pardons all completed their sentences and have been released from custody for more than a decade without further criminal activity. Individuals who have been convicted of a crime in California may apply to the Governor for a pardon. A gubernatorial pardon may be granted to people

On December 25, at 8:00 p.m., Pasadena Police Officers observed a silver SUV commit a traffic violation in the area of Claremont Street and Marengo Avenue. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however, the suspect driver failed to yield accelerating away from the officers at a high rate of speed. A short time later the suspect vehicle collided with a mini van at the intersection of Marengo Ave and Maple Street. The mini van contained 5 occupants. As a result of the collision one adult female and one male child were killed. The three remaining victims were transported to local area hospitals. The suspect vehicle contained four occupants. Aptly named ‘Celebrating Our Journey,’ the City of San Gabriel’s float entry for the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade has truly come a long way. San Gabriel will participate in the parade for the first time in 40 years, but according to City Manager Steven A. Preston, the reason has not been for a lack of community

spirit or civic pride. “It’s not because the city didn’t want to have one,” Preston said, “but because they couldn’t afford to have one.” Preston said the city’s float, more than two years in the making, cost $150,000 to build, not counting the $5,000 entry fee to participate in the Tournament of Roses.

The Needy Get Embraced with the Joy and Gift of Christmas in El Monte Historically, the El Monte Police Mid-Manager’s Association (PMMA) has spent money during the holidays to buy gifts for fellow employee groups and fund a Christmas Luncheon. While this has been enjoyable, the current economy has made life even tougher for the residents of our City. A decision was made to use the normal Christmas budget to fund a full Christmas for a truly needy family, including a tree, decorations, Christmas dinner and age appropriate Please see page 5

What’s really inspiring is that the money was fully raised by community sponsors and individual donors - not city funding. Dorothy's Place What Can I Say?

By Dorothy Denne Well, 2012 is rapidly coming to an end. Only 5 more days and it will be history. I’m not going to attempt to recap events. The media, whatever form we choose to use, will do plenty of that and probably more accurately than I would. So, I’m looking to the future. The other day I ran across a page I had torn from an old AARP News Bulletin. It was about fixtures of every day life that have vanished, are vanishing and will vanish. Remember when neither rain nor snow would keep the mailman away? Today they are called letter carriers, the mail they carry is called snail mail and they are an endangered species. Remember the rotary phone? As these 20th century icons gather dust, people are dropping their land-line

plans and opting for cell only. Eventually folks will be talking on mini-computers the size of cell phones, and basic telephones will become memories. Before I’ve even learned to use some of them, it is goodbye CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, thumb drives, video game discs and their players. Electronic entertainment will be bought and played directly from the internet. Analog clocks and their mini forms, the wrist watch, will become retro novelties as they are replaced by cell phones synched perfectly to satellites. Springing forward and falling back will be automatically done for us. Here’s one for you: toilet-seat bidets will wash and dry at the touch of a button, eliminating toilet paper. A far cry from my childhood days on the farm with outdoor toilets served by Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogs. Speaking of saving paper, gone will be glove box road maps. No need for these when map apps offer directions, traffic info, drive-

time estimates and an arrow pointing to the nearest whatever. Along that map line is a somewhat scary thought. Robots or self-driving cars are on the near horizon. Gasoline pumps, too, will become a thing of the past. When your car drives itself to a service station, it will be to plug in for a battery recharge or to fill up with hydrogen. Not so technical or futuristic but, as a former teacher, one of my pet peeves is the disappearance of cursive writing. Some states have already officially dropped handwriting as an educational requirement, with many more currently considering doing the same. One day extra instruction may be required for students who wish to read historical documents in their original drafts. Also on their list of going, going, almost gone are answering machines, tube televisions, phone books, bank deposit slips, printed encyclopedias, film, and incandescent light bulbs. What can I say? I guess just Happy New Year!

2013 -- The Greatest Year for Your Fitness and Health Here are Some Guidelines to Help You to Be the Best that You Can Be By Harry Sneider Another year has passed. Have you done all you can for your fitness and health? Have you procrastinated? Have you said you are going to do the things you know you should? Let’s break out of a rut today by following these simple guidelines for your well being. 1. How much exercise are you getting? The latest research from the various medical boards that keep track of our health needs show that as little as 40 minutes three times a week can maintain a healthy body. This includes cardiovascular workouts like walking, cycling, circuit training, as well as swimming. Couple this with weight training, 8 – 10 exercises like curls, presses, squats, bent rows, leg extensions, hamstring curls, upright rows, and bench presses. This will take care of your muscular needs. One of the neglected areas as a trainer I’ve seen in my clients is lack of flexibility. There are excellent programs for this that include pilates, yoga, and other flexibility exercises that we can show you that will keep you injury free and youthful. 2. What about your nutrition? The holiday season is winding down, time to put away the See’s candy, cookies, and sugary treats that are empty calories that put on weight. Begin 2013

with fruits like bananas, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, oranges and apples. Some of these you can find in the 99Cent Store if you are on a tight budget. Set a goal of losing one pound a week if you are overweight. Coupled with exercise up to 40 minutes a day, the pounds will come off very quickly. Add vegetables like salads, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, tomatoes, and cucumbers. These will provide the necessary nutrition to retain good health. Water is very important to drink. It is caloric free and won’t put on weight. 3. Your spiritual and mental well being is very important in the year 2013. Do you have a relationship with God? Do you pray? Do you study the Bible and other inspirational material? We are in need of healing in

this nation as never before. With the mass shootings and violence in our country we need to return to Godly principles that made this nation truly great. It’s up to you and your family. Will you keep things in a positive light in the year 2013? Don’t watch violent movies or play violent video games that do effect one psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually. Get out in our beautiful Southern California environment. Take a walk; breathe in the wonderful fresh air. Thank God for your life. This will be our 45th year as professional fitness trainers, motivators, and leaders in our nation in helping people stay healthy and well. We can be reached at 626-355-8964 or harrysneider@earthlink.net. YOU DESERVE HEALTH AND FITNESS. GO FOR IT!

El Monte City Council Member Becomes Santa for a Night Councilman Juventino Gomez became Santa Claus the evening of December 20 and, traveling on a Christmas float, visited the heavily populated area of the City known as the Bonwoods Apartments, near the intersection of Klingerman and Tyler Avenues. The float, accompanied by the Holiday Trolley and several Citizen Patrol units, traveled from the City’s Public Works facility at Arden Drive to its destination, a slow process that took about 30-minutes during which “Santa” wished a Merry Christmas to everyone who happened

HSI’s National Search for ‘Jane Doe’ Ends with Arrest of Florida Woman Minor Victim Identified, Woman Faces Federal Child Pornography Charges The nationwide search for a “Jane Doe” suspected child pornographer, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), ended with the arrest of an Okaloosa County, Fla., woman on federal charges for child pornography production. Corine Danielle Motley, 25, was arrested by HSI Pensacola special agents and Northwest Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force members late Wednesday evening, hours after HSI issued a public appeal for assistance to identify “Jane Doe.” “The quick identification of the victim and suspect in this case demonstrates the power of the press, social media and the general public in helping solve these cases,” said ICE Director John Morton. “Literally hours after we asked the public for their assistance in identifying Jane Doe, a tip came in that led to her identification and arrest. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that, due to these efforts, a child is now safe and her tormentor now in custody.” HSI’s Child Exploitation Investigations Unit’s Victim Identification Program obtained a “Jane Doe” arrest warrant Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for the suspect and issued a news release with photos seeking the public’s help to

identify the suspect, after all other investigative leads had been exhausted. According to the complaint, Motley is believed to have produced at least one long-form child pornography video featuring herself engaging in explicit sexual conduct with a 4 to 6-yearold victim. HSI special agents received an investigative referral from the Danish National Police, after the video was downloaded by law enforcement officers in Denmark. The video was referred to HSI as Danish police believed that the video had most likely been produced in the United States. HSI submitted the material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the national clearinghouse for child sexual exploitation material. The center determined that the victim had not yet been identified or rescued. Investigators believe that the video was posted on the Internet for the first time Nov. 27. The Department of Justice’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section supported the efforts of HSI during this investigation. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the Northwest Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force also provided assistance. Participating members of the task force included: the Okaloo-

sa County Sheriff’s Office, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the Pensacola Police Department. This investigation is part of Operation Predator, a nationwide HSI initiative to protect children from sexual predators, including those who travel overseas for sex with minors, Internet child pornographers, criminal alien sex offenders and child sex traffickers. HSI encourages the public to report suspected child predators and any suspicious activity through its toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE or by completing its online tip form. Both are staffed around the clock by investigators. Suspected child sexual exploitation or missing children may be reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, an Operation Predator partner, via its toll-free 24-hour hotline, 1-800-THE-LOST. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida.

toys for children living in the home. The PMMA worked with the executive director of the El Monte / South El Monte Emergency Resources Association, Lillian Rey, to identify families deserving of a proper Christmas and found two families who greatly needed our help. The PMMA joined forces with the El Monte Police Officers Association (EMPOA) and the two groups worked together and divided costs to provide Christmas for two families who otherwise would not have anything. Shortly thereafter, both association representatives met with the families. After hearing their stories, it was difficult to hold back emotions. Celia and Carlos Perez have six children ranging from four to 17 years. Celia recently had back surgery and it was not completely successful. Carlos has two brain tumors, is unable to find employment, and suffers from debilitating headaches. The youngest male child, Ethan, has been diagnosed with a fatal bone disease. They had very little among the family and the children had to share the available family clothing. When asked about their wishes for Christmas, it was a very modest request. They just wanted the children to receive a gift on Christmas.

Sheila Crippen-Thomas, Director of Marketing and Membership for the El Monte/So. El Monte Chamber of Commerce, heard about the Perez family and shared the story with Randy Wines of Wal-Mart. Randy created a shopping spree for the family at the Baldwin Park Wal-Mart. When the Perez family arrived at the Baldwin Park store they were greeted by the store manager Dwight. Prior to the family’s arrival at Wal-Mart, donations were collected amongst the Wal-Mart employees and they gave the Perez family a shopping cart filled with groceries. The second adopted family was the Sotelo family. This is a single mother family with five children. Captain Michelle States, representing Police Mid-Managers Association, coordinated the effort. Lieutenant Eric Stanley dressed up as Santa Claus and was joined with several police employees (and their families) to make the Christmas deliveries Saturday afternoon, December 22nd. Captain States said “These are good families who have had some unfortunate circumstances. We are glad to be able to help them have a good Christmas”. El Monte Police Officer’s Association President, Ben Lowry said “We are grateful we could join

the El Monte Police MidManager’s Association to help make Christmas a little brighter for these two families.” The first Christmas delivery was at the Sotelo house. The police employees and their families who accompanied them, were greeted with tears of joy and appreciation from the children. After the delivery at the Perez house Celia Perez shared some of her life experience with the officers. Celia said she was taken from her family home and placed in foster care when she was young. This experience made her uneasy with law enforcement. Celia added that as a young adult and mother, she realized that the action was for her protection. As a result, she has been able to raise her family with a better foundation. She is very thankful for the action of the El Monte Police Department that turned her life around. She said that when the family gets back on their feet, they too would give back to the community. Chief of Police Steve Schuster was present and oversaw the efforts of both associations and said, “Our police officers care about this community. This is another example of our commitment to improve the quality of life for the residents of our community.”

Monrovia’s historic Old Town district will host its 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve on Myrtle this year. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on the December 31st and will feature a live band, a beer and wine garden, and a family-friendly seating area with tables and chairs for outside diners complete with free games and fun crafts for the kiddies. At midnight attendees will ring in the New Year with a traditional champagne toast and a not-so-traditional “Ball Raising”, Monrovia-style. The “Ball Raising” – as opposed to the traditional Ball

Drop – was the brainchild of Event Planner, Penny Arroyo, and Family Festival Productions working with Monrovia staff representative, Dan Bell as they brainstormed last year’s event. With no skyscrapers available for lowering the flashy ornament, the next best thing – the raising of the ball -- is now the new tradition for Monrovia. Restaurants in Old Town will be open, and many of the small shops will stay open late as well, so celebrants are encouraged to come early, dine out at their favorite restaurant, and, of

course, do a little shopping before the band begins at about 7 p.m. And be prepared to dance because The Lance and Gary Show will return this year with their crowd-pleasing music that spans decades of favorite sounds. Take the Myrtle off ramp from the 210 freeway and head north into Old Town where parking is always FREE. “A Noise Within Dishes Up Good Cheer and More at “Fezziwig's Festive Holiday Tea” Fundraiser Christmas came several days early at A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre Company, which celebrated the season in jolly style with a joyful fundraiser even Scrooge couldn’t resist – “Fezziwig’s Festive Holiday Tea” capped by a matinee performance of Charles Dickens’ beloved seasonal classic, “A Christmas Carol” – on Sunday, December 16, 2012, at its new stateof-the-art Pasadena theatre. The event raised $60,000 to benefit ANW’s Classics Live! education outreach programs, which serve more than 10,000 students a year from more than 130 schools, spanning five counties. As guests arrived at the inaugural event, named for a generous character in the classic tale, they stepped into a wintry wonderland of silver and white, they were handed a flute of champagne and were greeted by Mr. & Mrs. Fezziwig themselves. Passed hors d’oeuvres of miniature beef Wellingtons and smoked salmon blini puffs were a tasty prelude to the lavish traditional British tea catered by Peggy Dark and The Kitchen for Exploring Foods, featuring a mouthwatering array of

savory finger sandwiches – cucumber, radish, chicken tarragon, deviled egg salad, shaved ham, smoke salmon, roast beef and bay shrimp in Dijon dill sauce – as well as crab mousse and steamed shrimp with chevre filling. Capping it off were freshly baked scones, English sticky toffee pudding, Eton Mess Tumblers, and traditional trifle with Marsala-soaked pound cake, strawberries, Amaretti cookies and custard. Prosecco, English Breakfast tea and sparkling water were poured. Festive centerpieces featured teapots overflowing with white blooms. Following the repast, guests settled in for a performance of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, hailed by critics as “a fresh and whimsical take on the timeless novel” (Edge), and “a beautifully appointed, droll and heartfelt take on a timeless holiday staple” (Backstage). Wells Fargo sponsored “Fezziwig’s Festive Holiday Tea” and the production. Pasadena Magazine was media sponsor of the tea. “We wanted to create a special fundraising event surrounding A Christmas Carol that people of all ages can enjoy,” says ANW Producing Artistic Director

Santa Brings Joy to Hundreds of Children at El Monte Parks

Children pose with Santa at the City of El Monte’s Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department’s Annual Santa at the Park event. More than 2,000 participants lined up early for the chance to visit Santa Claus and toys were generously donated by generous city employees and community members. -Courtesy Photo (Left) “Santa Baby” – The San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre held its third holiday dinner and concert gala at the San Gabriel Country Club December 7th. Daughters Of The Revolution (DAR) Host Elegant Christmas Luncheon The Santa Anita Chapter of the DAR enjoyed its annual Christmas Luncheon in the private dining room at Hillcrest in La Verne. Hosted by Mary Ann Williams (Regent) the group welcomed new and pending members on Saturday, December 15th, Alice Tangey and Julie Fendrick and Floretta Lauber. The decorations and ambience of the room put everyone in a holiday mood. The table was covered in a dark green cloth with a sparkling gold runner spaced with gold spiral Christmas trees set with jewels. The effect was quite beautiful. The luncheon menu included a dinner salad of poached pear, baby greens, candied nuts, gorgonzola cheese and raspberry vinaigrette, chicken pasta nest with

Route 66 Experts Visit Duarte Kiwanis Alan and Claudia Heller are experts on the unique and eclectic roadside adventures found along Route 66. Route 66 was removed from the United States Highway system in 1985 because the expansion of interstate highways made travel quicker and more efficient. But the attraction of the historic route remains high. Route 66 originally traversed Monrovia along Huntington Dr, Shamrock and Foothill before returning to Huntington. Today, markers for the route only line Huntington Dr.

Claudia’s interest in Route 66 began with a series on newspaper articles she wrote on the historic “Mother Road.” She and her husband, Alan, who did the photography for the book, embarked on a twomonth odyssey in 2010 to travel from Santa Monica to Chicago along “America’s Highway.” The result of this journey and the 15-month series of articles she wrote was the book, Life on Route 66: Personal Accounts along the Mother Road to California. What makes this book unique among the

numerous books written about the subject is that it contains Alan and Claudia Heller’s stories and memories of those who experienced traveling Route 66 in their youth. The Duarte Kiwanis Club has lunch meetings the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of the month at Westminster Gardens. For further information on speaking or joining the club, contact Dr. Diane Hernandez at drdiane@ drhernandezoptometry. com.

Jolly Saint Nick recently brought holiday cheer and gifts to several El Monte parks as the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department hosted their annual Santa at the Park event on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012. Every year this event draws in crowds of hundreds of children anxiously awaiting their turn to visit with Santa. This year’s event drew in over 2,000

participants as many families lined up early for the opportunity to visit Santa Claus. Mr. Claus made an appearance at the newly opened Gibson Mariposa Park, Mt. View Park and Zamora Park. The department was able to provide every child with a gift thanks in part to the generous donation by city employees, fundraising efforts, caring friends and community members. All funds raised or donat-

ed on an annual basis are utilized to purchase balls and stuffed animals for all children wishing to visit with Santa Claus. This magical event brings joy and holiday cheer to many families in the City of El Monte. The El Monte Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department would like to thank all supporters, volunteers and all participants for helping to make this event spectacular!

Pasadena PD DUI Checkpoint this Weekend Througout City Pasadena Police Department Traffic Section will be conducting a DUI Checkpoint on Friday, December 28, 2012, at an undisclosed location within the city limits, between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent, when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted frequently. Officers will be contacting drivers who pass through the checkpoint, for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Drivers who are caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes

and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. In 2010, over 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher. In California, this deadly crime led to 791 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 3 lives and resulted in 58 injury crashes, harming 82 of our friends and neighbors,” said Pasadena Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any other DUI enforcement strategy. Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for

achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public. “DUI Checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we have witnessed since 2006 in California,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, Pasadena needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.” Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Pasadena Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA reminds everyone to continue working together in bringing an end to these tragedies by calling 9-1-1 to report drunk drivers.

San Gabriel Rose Float Continued from page 1

city’s 100th birthday on Apr. 24, 2013. According to Sawkins, the float carries with it into the New Year the regional significance of ‘Celebrating Our Journey’ for the city. “It means a lot to us because it shares with the world San Gabriel’s place in history: a place in Southern California history and how our history is unique,” he said. “We are really the birthplace of the L.A. region; it’s an opportunity for us to have community pride and be proud of our history and heritage, as well as the diversity of our present community.” The mayor, too, is delighted with the generous efforts of many donors and sponsors from the community that have made the float possible. “We were really committed to doing it without city funds. So instead of city tax dollars, we wanted to have it supported entirely by the community - community organizations, residents and businesses,” Sawkins said at a VIP reception held in the Rose Float Decorating Tent at the Rose Bowl on Thursday evening. The special event was held in appreciation of those sponsors who donated $1,000 or more toward the city’s float. Vice Mayor Mario De La Torre, who chaired the Sponsorship Committee, headed the efforts to raise the necessary funds to hire Paradiso Parade Floats to design and build the city’s float. Athens Services was the top contributor at $25,000, matching dollar for dollar donated from their customers until they ultimately raised $50,000 in total. Other sponsors include Airstream Los Angeles and Hilton Hotel at $20,000 each, while AHMC San Gabriel Medical Center LP, Citizens Business Bank, San Gabriel Community Foundation and Southern California Edison each contributed $5,000. The Centennial Celebration page on the city’s website at www.sangabrielcity.com lists the many other individuals who donated money to the city’s float. According to Preston,

the Float Committee, cochaired by Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Perez and San Gabriel resident Pam Petievich, pulled the whole project together by organizing nearly 100 volunteers working on different tasks. They made the critical decision to go with Paradiso Parade Floats, headed up by Creative Director Charles Meier. “We took ideas from many people’s designs and showed them to Charlie,” said Petievich, explaining how the citywide float design contest was a learning experience for the committee itself. “It really has to have a (distinct) theme, and you’ve got to stick with that theme.” Petievich said they finally decided on a ‘Going to Market’ type of theme in response to the Rose Parade’s theme, ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go.’ The San Gabriel float features oxen pulling a cart that is overflowing with grapes, Tongva-patterned baskets filled with colorful arrangements of flowers and produce, and a surrounding floral landscape framed by the Spanish-styled architecture of the city’s Grapevine Arbor. Gwen Robertson, who is liaison to both the float’s sponsors as well as its volunteers, said they currently

have three shifts of volunteers working on the float - with nearly 45 volunteers per shift. “When you work with communities, you want the community to be part of it, especially when you have a grassroots organization like this,” said Robertson. She said the biggest challenge is yet to come - 15,000 individual roses. “You can’t get them until about December 27th,” Robertson said. “And you can’t prepare them until about the 28th - at the earliest. You have to individually cut them, individually vile them, and then they have to be individually put onto the float. It’s incredibly labor intensive.” The remaining dates to help decorate San Gabriel’s float are from Wednesday, Dec. 26 to Sunday, Dec. 30. There are volunteer opportunities for youth and adults, ages 12 and over. For more information, please email the volunteer coordinator at centennial@ sgch.org or call the Parks and Recreation Department at (626) 308-2875. The float decorating location is at the Rose Bowl, corner of North Arroyo Boulevard and Seco Street, Parking Lot I, in Pasadena. For upcoming information on San Gabriel’s Centennial Celebration, visit www.sangabriel100.com.

Use Caution on Pasadena Surface Streets Due to Rose Parade Preparations Motorists are asked to use caution while driving on Pasadena’s surface streets, especially Colorado Boulevard and adjacent intersections, as traffic signals are changed or adjusted to accommodate the floats for the 124th Rose Parade on January 1, 2013. City work crews are now busy adjusting15 traffic signals to enable enough clearance for the Rose Parade’s floats. Every year at this time, crews from the Department of Public Works will be in the field to modify, remove or replace a variety of traffic signal mast arms. At some intersection, the arms will be replaced with poles. City officials ask motorists to use caution while the crews are working and to be observant of new signals being temporarily used. Signals with left turn ar-

Threat of Gun Violence at South Pasadena High School Reported In the evening of Thursday, December 20, the South Pasadena Police Department received information from a South Pasadena High School student regarding a threat of possible gun violence to occur sometime during the school day today. The po-

lice department has investigated the threat overnight and at this point in the investigation, they lack any specific information that would suggest the threat is credible. The SPPD continues to work closely with the South Pasadena High

School administration and school district to ensure the safety of the students which will include, but not be limited to, a heavier than normal police presence throughout the final school day before Winter Break.

Rep. Judy Chu Denounces GOP Cheap Tricks on Fiscal Showdown Thursday Congressional Republicans pushed their Plan B proposal through the House of Representatives. The legislation, intended as a counter offer to President Obama’s negotiations to end the ongoing fiscal showdown, prompted the following response from Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32): “In just less than two weeks, we face tax increases and drastic spending cuts from the federal government that will impact every single American. Instead

of negotiating in good faith with President Obama to avoid harm to our economy, Republicans are putting up another show bill – a bill with no chance of passing the Senate; no chance of being signed by the President; no chance of bringing us closer to a deal. The clock is ticking, and it’s time for the GOP to stop these partisan ploys and get back to the negotiating table.” Plan B makes permanent the tax cuts for incomes up to $1 million, increasing taxes on income over $1 mil-

lion. The plan also provides for a permanent patch to the alternative minimum tax. It does not, however, extend expanded earned income and child credits while eliminating the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Under this plan, millionaires will still receive a $50,000 tax cut each year while 25 million working families see an average tax increase of $1,000. Instead of addressing our debt, it will add more than $400 billion to our deficit through tax cuts to millionaires alone.

Hillsides Children and Youths to Ride on Wells Fargo Stagecoach Hillsides Kicks Off Centennial Celebration at Pasadena Tournament of Roses® Parade On New Year’s Day, Hillsides, the premier provider of high quality care, advocacy and innovative services to create lasting change for children, youth, and families, will celebrate its centennial anniversary at the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. This historic milestone for Hillsides is being recognized by Wells Fargo and has invited a group of Hillsides children and youth to ride in the iconic Wells Fargo stagecoach during the parade. Hillsides has chosen Jordan Romero, 14, Trayveon Hollins, 18, Esperanza Mejia, 19, and her son, Jacob, 2, who have made significant strides in improving their overall wellbeing and have thrived in safe, permanent environments. Stagecoach Riders Jordan Romero is a remarkable 14-year-old young girl with the spirit of a giver and the spunk of an athlete. Jordan first enrolled at Hillsides Education Center as a second grader, and two years

ago became a resident in our Residential Treatment Services program. Now in ninth grade, she leads in the school as the student council secretary and plays an integral role in the classroom for the other students. An avid softball player and golfer, Jordan plays hard. In the home, she plays another extension of her leadership role. Jordan has faced many things she wouldn’t in the past venture to do. Her interpersonal challenges have slowly been overcome by taking healthy risks, helping to boost her own self-esteem and confidence. Whether it’s at school, on the field or in her home, Jordan is determined to give of herself and become a leader as she foresees owning and running an animal rescue shelter. Trayveon Hollins is determined to become a leader for others. While growing up in a chaotic and verbally abusive home, Trayveon spent much time on the streets until one day he was face-

to-face with a juvenile court judge. While in juvenile court, he expressed his concern about returning home and was placed in a youth home that could offer him stability. When

he approached emancipation age, he found himself searching for another stable residence--one that would build on what he had learned. Since his residence at Youth Moving On, Hollins has learned to be independent, speak up, and budget his money.

dena City College and enroll in a construction program. His goal is to move into permanent housing and become a leader for the other youth that participate in YMO. The structure that he receives at YMO is helping him build a strong foundation for independence—something he could only dream about as a young child. Esperanza Mejia found herself pregnant at 16 and in a turbulent relationship with her unborn child’s father. When she gave birth to Jacob she knew she needed help, but still couldn’t come around to accepting it. Staff at Hillsides Family Resource Centers approached her several times trying to intervene, but Mejia still wasn’t ready. Until one day, she realized the unhealthy re-

lationship she was in was not the kind of environment in which she wanted to raise her son. Behind in class credits, Mejia had to catch up quickly to graduate from high school. While many people never thought she’d graduate, she credits Hillsides for the support she received during this time. From helping her get full custody of her son to driving her to appointments, staff worked with Esperanza to help meet her goal of graduating high school. As a single mother, she struggled through Jacob’s infancy. He had unusual tantrums, constantly cried, and couldn’t have restful sleep. Mejia knew something was wrong so asked Hillsides staff to help her with Jacob. She was going to therapy for herself and was in therapy with her son. Mejia was able to meet and manage her needs, better enabling her to meet the complex needs required to soothe Jacob. Exhausted from sleepless nights with Jacob, Esperanza still woke up early to attend high school during the day, participated in an afterschool program, and enrolled in adult school to earn enough credits to graduate. On days when she was depressed and didn’t believe she could make it, Hillsides staff encouraged Esperanza, believed in her and gave her the confidence she needed. On her graduation day, she learned that she had made the principal’s honor roll. Determined to get ahead, Mejia enrolled in UEI College with scholarships she was awarded

and completed a medical assistant program. Now at 19, Mejia is working fulltime as a medical assistant and is planning to attend Pasadena City College as a stepping-stone to earn her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy. Mejia hopes to work with teenagers at risk who deal with gang violence, drug abuse, and domestic violence. Unbeknownst to her, the birth of her son was the end of unhealthy risks and the beginning of a hopeful future. Mejia truly embodies the meaning of her Spanish name— hope. Romero, Hollins, and Mejia will be joined by Hillsides CEO Joe Costa, whose leadership has refined the work of what was already the top-notch foster care support system in the region. Costa’s mission, from the very start, was to preserve families and promote safe, permanent environments where young people can thrive. “I am honored to provide leadership to an organization who continues to provide high quality care, innovative services, and advocacy,” says Costa. “I am even more proud to ride with these children and youth who have struggled and overcome traumatic obstacles. Their lives are a testament of how one can restore hope and rebuild a life.” Hillside is fortunate to look toward another 100 years with support from corporations like Wells Fargo that has partnered to be a sponsor of the organization’s centennial celebration.

Senator John Kerry cratic presidential nominee, has widely been seen as the frontrunner for the position since U.N. ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration after heated political allegations. Rice came un-

der heavy fire from Republican senators for putting forth a flawed explanation of the events in the Sept. 11 consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya in the days after the attack.

who have demonstrated exemplary behavior following their conviction. A pardon will not be granted unless it has been earned. Obtaining a pardon is a distinct achievement based upon

proof of a productive and law-abiding life following conviction. When a pardon is granted, the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investi-

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
