Arcadia Slowly Steers Rusnak Dealership Expansion Back on Track

FSET Named ‘Swat Team of the Year’ On Monday, November 27, 2012, the California Association of Tactical Officers (C.A.T.O.) selected the Foothills Special Enforcement Team (FSET) as “SWAT Team of the Year” for the State of California. FSET was founded in 2004 as one of the first regional SWAT programs in Los Angeles County. FSET has shown multiple agencies can work cooperatively as a team for the benefit of all the participating communities. FSET is in the eighth year of successful operation

By Jim e. Winburn Since the statewide dissolution of redevelopment agencies, the City of Arcadia has been contending with new property requirements to help Rusnak Mercedes-Benz with its decade-old plan for expansion. Arcadia’s former Redevelopment Agency in 2011 acquired the last parcel of a two-acre site that it intended to sell to Rusnak as part of a development deal. That plan would help the dealership expand to six acres.

But because of the December 2011 California Supreme Court decision to eliminate redevelopment agencies, the Rusnak Mercedes-Benz dealership expansion has been stalled. Arcadia is now working on a long-range property management plan for the dealership expansion a plan that is now required for state approval before former redevelopment agency property may be sold. “We have recently taken that particular plan to our successor agency, which is the City Council,

and it is now going to go to its next step, which is the city’s oversight board to the successor agency,” said Assistant City Manager Jason Kruckeberg. The Arcadia City Council is designated as the successor agency over the former Redevelopment Agency’s assets. However, the oversight committee - which includes representatives appointed by the mayor, the county and the community college chancellor’s office - may overrule any decisions made. If approved by the suc-

cessor agency, the property management plan for the potential Rusnak expansion will be submitted to the state’s Department of Finance. According to Kruckeberg, until that document is approved by the state, the city cannot negotiate the sale of any land. “We are very much interested in still doing that deal, and Rusnak, I believe, is still interested in doing that deal, but that’s where we are,” said Kruckeberg. “We are really caught in the state’s Please see page 12

At any point in time we are each just a hair’s breadth away from the final curtain. If we live life aware of that fact, it can be good. If we fail to face it, we may miss a lot of golden opportunities. I was driving eastbound on Huntington Dr. near Centennial Way. As I prepared to turn left onto Centennial, a slightly less-than-idiot female not only ran the stop sign but also made a wrong direction turn into the oncoming oneway traffic on Huntington. I swerved to the right into a fortunately empty spot in the next lane. I narrowly avoided a head-on collision which would probably have had multi-car involvement and very possibly have creamed me out. It is said that in times of crisis, a lifetime passes before our eyes in seconds. I didn’t have time for that but once I realized I was safe, I had a renewed appreciation for my husband, my friends, my cats. I came home to learn that a long time friend is retir-

ing and moving out of state. I had, only a short time before, learned that my next door neighbor had been moved to a convalescent home to await her death. She had been my neighbor for twenty years. Two unwelcome changes creating voids in my life. I turned on the TV to temporarily escape from life. Before I could find a nothing type of brainless entertainment I hit a newscast with so called breaking news. A stolen car was being driven through residential areas at high speeds, on sidewalks, over center parkways and through oncoming traffic. The driver ignored stop lights and signs. I watched the helicopter view as numerous people missed being annihilated by inches and splitseconds, often unaware of the life-threatening scenario. I wondered if, before they left home, they had told the important people in their lives how much they loved them. Had they walked their dog and received a slobbery kiss? Had they scratched the cat behind its ears? Did they put out a few extra peanuts for the crows to steal from the bluejays? I turned off the TV and went to bed exhausted. There was a full moon. I

didn’t sleep well. I personally didn’t turn into a werewolf, but I dreamed of different variations of those who had. The next morning I awoke feeling only partially refreshed. I felt better as I stepped out the door into the warm sunshine. A mockingbird was singing its heart out in my favorite backyard tree. I thought, “life is good.” Just as my spirits were rising a neighborhood feral calico cat pranced by with a poor little lizard in her mouth. Her life was good, but the lizard’s was not. A few seconds later I heard a terrible screeching mr-r-r-row and saw a feral black cat chasing the feral calico with the lizard in her mouth. To save her own tail, the calico dropped the lizard. He escaped, with only tooth marks on his body, to enjoy another chance at life. The cats inflated their tails, spit and hollered at each other, then went their separate ways. A bluejay swooped down and grabbed a peanut. The mockingbird continued to sing. I started off on my chores. Life is precarious but, taken a second at a time, it can be beautiful. I’ll settle for that.

By Jim e. Winburn The holiday season is meant to be like no other time of the year: a time to celebrate in the warmth and company of friends and family. But there is always that “However-ly” precaution. Families have a lot to keep in mind during the holidays - especially when entertaining guests within a jubilant household. According to Arcadia Fire Marshal Mark Krikorian, enjoying the holidays requires planning ahead to keep safety in mind for all members of a household. There are a few simple housekeeping precautions for Christmas trees that are important to note. “If your tree hasn’t been treated with a fire retardant treatment, make sure that if it is a fresh tree you’ve got to water it,” said Krikorian. “A six-foot tree can use about one gallon of water every two days.” He also advises that trees should be kept away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters or candles. But Christmas tree lights may also be problematic. Krikorian says households should not use more than three

strands of lights plugged together, and to check that the wires are not frayed or damaged before decorating the tree with them. Also, the lights should not be touching anything that is combustible, such as paper wrapping. The fire marshal also pointed out a few safety concerns regarding large occupancy celebrations. Fire safety is a matter of both planning and awareness. And should an emergency take place involving a large group of people in a single room, whether eating together or watching football, an exit strategy can save lives. “No matter where you go, you should always be aware of where your exits are,” said Krikorian. “You should always have at least two ways out of a any room wherever you go.” He also advised that if you are with someone who may be on medication, for example, someone who is diabetic, it is helpful for that person to carry a medical I.D. bracelet if emergency responders should require immediate access to their medical background.

Chris Holden Takes Seat in State Assembly Assembly Member Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) was sworn in Monday as the representative of the new 41st Assembly District, and as the Majority Whip of the California Democratic Caucus. Holden’s inaugural legislative effort, introduced today, is a bill addressing economic development and jobs creation. AB 9 notes that California workers and businesses face the harshest economic conditions since the Great Depression. Unemployment in California remains in double digits. “We need jobs here and we need jobs now. AB 9 represents the first step in my commitment to creating jobs here in the 41st District, and in the State of California,” said Assembly Member

Mr. Holden has begun to meet with business and labor organizations, and with members of both political parties to explore areas of cooperation and consensus. Holden represents the 41st Assembly District, encompassing the cities of Pasadena, portions of South Pasadena, portions of East Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, La Verne, Altadena, San Dimas, Claremont,

and Upland. He previously served as a Councilmember and Mayor for the City of Pasadena, where he was first elected in 1989. Mr. Holden championed the creation of a living wage ordinance to improve the economic prospects of working class residents and chaired Pasadena’s Charter Reform Task Force for Schools. He also managed deregulation of the city’s public utility in a way that preserved local jobs while keeping rates lower than in the private marketplace. Monrovia Wants Your Input - Meeting - Dec. 11 7PM The City of Monrovia is pleased to announce the launch of Plan Monrovia, a strategic planning process that engages and solicits community feedback to build a roadmap for Monrovia for the next five years. Using a new comprehensive community engagement website, developed by MindMixer, citizens can engage, communicate and collaborate with city leaders and other residents on future planning for the city. Plan Monrovia is about understanding and voicing the highest priorities for the community and developing City services that meet those needs. Along the way, the Plan Monrovia website will be used as an online tool to generate new ideas and feedback from citizens to help the city prioritize projects. The goal is to obtain widespread input because as the city moves forward, leaders want to know what is important to every citizen in Monrovia. Feedback from the engagement website will be used by the city manager and other planners in order to create a roadmap for Monrovia’s programs and services for the next five years. While Monrovia’s bud-

get is structurally balanced, since 2008, the City has seen a 17% reduction in staffing positions, a $2 million cut of expenditures to some of the city’s key programs. Sales tax revenues have been down 25% and property taxes remain flat. This means that the city must prioritize the programs and services it provides and take a new look at what Monrovia could be doing. “We are looking to the community to help answer the question, ‘What are the most important things the City should focus on over the next five years,’” said City Manager Laurie Lile. “Like most cities in California, our resources are more limited now, which means we may not be able to provide all of the services we used to or perhaps not in the exact same way. The purpose of this process is to engage our residents, businesses, students, and all Monrovians in discussion about how City resources should be allocated to the community.” Plan Monrovia gives contributors a chance to share new ideas, second others’ ideas, expand upon existing ideas and give feedback on initiatives, working with the

city on a variety of topics online anytime, anywhere. The discussion will start with topics like these, and branch off from there based on contributor input: - What are your priorities for Monrovia? - For every $1,000 of city funds, how would you divvy up the money? Plan Monrovia measures and tracks participation, identifying the most interested citizens and most compelling topics. MindMixer’s tools make it easy for administrations to communicate back with citizens, and they deliver measurable results and invaluable insights for the city. “Monrovia is committed to making this process transparent and interactive. We are listening and eager to hear your thoughts and ideas,” says Mayor Mary Ann Lutz. “I hope everyone in our community gets involved in this process, and I encourage all Monrovians to sign on to PlanMonrovia.org. All of the ideas and community voices expressed go into how the City Council makes decisions about programs and services in our upcoming 2013-2015 budget.” Nick Bowden, CEO of

Chamber Wants You to Shop Pasadena

“Grow Your Community, Shop Pasadena” The prosperity of Pasadena is dependent on the financial health of our local business community. One simple way everyone who lives, works or does business in Pasadena can aid in the recovery of our local economy is to spend money with Pasadena businesses. In collaboration with the City of Pasadena, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce is promoting local shopping through its Grow Your Community, Shop Pasadena informational campaign. “Grow Your Community, Shop Pasadena encourages everyone to think locally when buying during the holiday season and beyond,”

said Eric Duyshart, economic development manager for the City of Pasadena. “Our local businesses contribute to the excellent quality of life in Pasadena and every dollar retained in Pasadena pays a dividend to our community.” “We all have memories of that favorite retailer, restaurant or entertainment venue that is no longer in business here in Pasadena,” said Pasadena Chamber CEO Paul Little. “We are equally aware of our unemployment figures and the difficulty many have in finding work. At the same time we all take advantage of the high quality of services provided by the City of Pasadena to support the quality

of life in our neighborhoods and the vitality of our commercial interests and business districts. Shopping with our local stores and eating in our local restaurants in something we can all do to help preserve and grow jobs in Pasadena for Pasadena residents.” Grow Your Community, Shop Pasadena features bus shelter ads that are on display throughout Pasadena from mid-November to mid-January. The ads were designed in partnership with The Agency, a student-run advertising cooperative at Art Center College of Design. CBS Outdoor generously provides bus shelter space for the oversized poster campaign.

San Gabriel Tree Lighting Continued from page 1

The lighting of the Christmas tree served as a reminder to residents that despite any hardships, the spirit of recovery is always within reach because of the charity found in our community. Speaking to the crowd of onlookers, Sawkins explained how last year’s windstorm had affected everyone in the city, as well as the San Gabriel Valley. “And our Christmas tree that we light every year was also a victim,” the mayor said. “It came down in the windstorm last year.” Sawkins thanked the Parks and Recreation De-

partment for quickly locating and planting another pine tree to replace last year’s fallen one. He also thanked the San Gabriel Taiwanese Lions Club, who rose to the occasion by donating $3,000 to cover the cost of the city’s new Christmas tree. The mayor also announced that local resident Molina Gonzalez won the raffle for the Sparks of Love toy drive. Her ticket was randomly picked by Vice Mayor Mario De La Torre, awarding her and three guests to ride a vintage fire truck with Santa Claus through San Ga-

briel neighborhoods from Dec. 20 through 23. Check Parks and Recreation’s “Holiday Events” link on the city’s website at www. sangabrielcity.com for times and routes. Those who donated new and unwrapped toys to the Fire Department’s Spark of Love program were entered into the raffle. After the mayor announced the lighting of the tree, Santa Claus arrived atop his light-adorned vintage fire truck, waving to a cheering crowd while under a police escort.

Vibrant, Enchanting “A Christmas Carol” Musical Now at Sierra Madre Playhouse by Fran Syverson Sparkling! Festive! Vividly colorful! Even scary. And totally, satisfyingly delightful! All these descriptors and more portray the vibrant “A Christmas Carol” entertaining us throughout the holidays at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. True, you won’t find many surprises in the story line. By now we all are familiar with Charles Dickens’ tale, a traditional Yuletide favorite. But this year’s production directed by Christina Harris has a special zest that sends the audience out at intermission, glowing and eager to return and once again watch ol’ Scrooge’s metamorphosis. Ebenezer Scrooge, as usual, begrudges his clerk Bob Cratchit both the lumps of coal to warm their office and Bob’s request to have Christmas Day off. James B. Harnagel plays his “Bah-humbug!” role to the hilt, while Karl Maschek, quill pen in hand, is appropriately deferential toward his miserly boss. He also is devoted to his loving wife (Sarah Logan)

and their family, including music and the many carols everyone’s beloved Tiny work to segue seamlessly Tim (Kiara Lisette Gam- from scene to scene. robbers, or the Cratchit family. Likewise, the ghosts. Each Christmas spirit is eerie in its own way. Sarah Watson as the Spirit of Christmas Past is ethereal in

her white gown with lightbulb auras. Marvin Matthews as Christmas Present wears a holly crown and an ample green velvet robe, with a voice to match, filling the theater when he sings. Matthew Kerchner, statuesque with veiled face, is unrelenting as he reveals to Scrooge what may lie in his Christmas Yet to Come.

“A Christmas Carol” offers some little scenic gems: men warming their hands over an open fire. Or, on the small side stage, a fireplace—coal scuttle at its side—glowing in Scrooge’s bedroom where he dons his red silk dressing gown for what turns out to be a ghostly night. Director Harris and Rick Taylor designed the set. Many actors are cast in multiple roles. To see who’s who and who’s playing whom, you can study the program’s lengthy cast of characters. While “A Christmas Carol” is a charming play for families with children of all ages, it is also a delightful prelude to the holidays simply for people of all ages. For many, attending is a long-standing tradition. In keeping with Scrooge’s generous holiday spirit after his reawakening, the Playhouse invites guests to bring unwrapped toys for their “Toys For Tots” collection. Call early for reser-

vations, as holiday shows usually enjoy sellouts. “A Christmas Carol” will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse through Thursday, Dec. 20. Friday dates are Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, 14, & 21, and Saturdays Dec. 1, 8, 15, & 22, all at 8 p.m. Shows on Sundays Dec. 2, 9, 16 & 23 are matinees at 2:30 p.m., and Dec. 23 evening at 7 p.m. Extra weeknight performances will be Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 19 & 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets for “A Christmas Carol” are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors 65 years and older, $15 for students 13-21, and $12 for children 12 years and younger. Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department to Combat Roadway Deaths and Injuries $450,000 Grant for DUI Checkpoints Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for an anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways. Additional enforcement measures to combat impaired driving are coming as a result of a recent $450,500 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department - Traffic Services Detail. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and education. “Saving lives, reducing injuries, traffic collisions and property damage is important work,” said Sheriff Lee Baca. “Every life is a life worth saving and we will do our utmost to help keep the public safe.” The special DUI Checkpoint grant is to assist in efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions in the community. The grant activities will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as educating

the public on the dangers of impaired driving through the use of DUI/driver’s license checkpoints. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Drunk and drugged driving are among America’s deadliest crimes. In 2010, 791 people were killed and over 24,000 injured in alcohol and drugimpaired crashes in California. In 2010, the contract cities patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department experienced 8 killed and 378 injured in these tragic crashes. Crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized

checkpoints are conducted often enough. Checkpoints have proven to be the most effective of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. “DUI checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed from 2006 to 2010 in California,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that this grant will provide.”

Drive down the private lane that curves around the park-like lawns with magnificent sycamores and discover an architectural gem from Pasadena’s halcyon days. This lovely, 3,701 SF European-style cottage was built in 1901 for John C. Cravens. The home’s design is attributed to the architectural firm Hunt, Eager and Burns whose many notable buildings include the California Club, the Doheny residence in Los Angeles, and Pasadena’s Shakespeare and Annandale Country Clubs. This two-story home features four bedrooms and three baths, a large eat-in kitchen, downstairs master suite, two fireplaces, formal dining room with French doors and central air. The house is set back on over half an acre with beautifully landscaped grounds featuring manicured lawns, meadow-like hillock with sycamore grove, mature native trees and ornamental shrubs, and a sparkling pool with ornamental wrought iron and brick gated enclosure. This home offers a private secluded sanctuary with a wonderful history. Located in the highly desirable southwest section of Pasadena, this home is centrally located just minutes from Old Town Pasadena and a short drive to downtown Los Angeles.

FSET Named “Swat Team of the Year” Continued from page 1

month. The team’s abilities have allowed its tactical officers to respond efficiently to complex problems. FSET includes a crisis negotiation team and a sniper team to assist tactical team operators on critical incidents. The combined resources of the five agencies allows for a larger, well prepared and better equipped team than each agency could field by themselves. The purpose of a SWAT team is to have highly trained and wellequipped officers available to respond to the most dangerous situations. These highly trained team members help provide greater safety for our community members, the police officers responding to the call and for the suspects themselves. The following are examples of three incidents FSET has responded to over the last year: In December of 2011,

FSET responded to an active shooter incident at the Southern California Edison facility in Irwindale. FSET personnel conducted a tactical search for injured persons and located a victim who was losing a great deal of blood from a gunshot wound. The victim survived, due to the rapid response of the team and the immediate medical care provided. In June of 2012, FSET responded to a call in the City of Monrovia of a convicted felon with weapons at a residence, threatening to shoot the police. FSET crisis negotiators attempted for hours to get the suspect to give up peaceably. Eventually, the team used tear gas in the residence and the suspect surrendered, unharmed. In March of 2012, FSET served a high-risk search warrant in the City of Baldwin Park. The suspect was

barricaded inside the residence. The team deployed tear gas and the suspect surrendered, unharmed. Four firearms, ammunition, a ballistic vest, black hoods and drugs were located. These types of incidents underscore the need for a highly trained, wellequipped tactical team like FSET. By working together collaboratively and sharing resources, these five cities have been able to create a well organized, more efficient team at a lesser expense to the individual agency than they could ever have done working independently. The cities of Glendora, Irwindale, La Verne, Monrovia and San Marino thank the California Tactical Officers Association for recognizing the outstanding work of the Foothills Special Enforcement Team by presenting them with the “SWAT Team of the Year Award.”

U.N. Human Rights Day is Dec. 9; Water Sustainability as Theme Officials from Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Urban Homestead City Farm, a Pasadena model for sustainable living, will join Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard for the United Nations Association’s and City of Pasadena’s Human Rights Day event from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Central Library, 285 E. Walnut St., Donald Wright Auditorium. To celebrate the 64th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and as a kick-off for 2013 as the United Nations’ “Year of Water Cooperation,” Mayor Bogaard will join the Pasadena/Foothills Chapter of the United Nations Association (UNA) in hosting a free public event focused on water sustainability. “Sustainable, safe water is critical to quality of life here in Pasadena, in the nation, and around the world,” Mayor Bogaard said. “In our lifetime, access to clean water has been taken for granted. We believe it is a basic human right, but billions of citizens around the

world do not enjoy that privilege. It could become a national security issue.” The event and UNA theme of “Water Cooperation” focuses on the importance of water as a basic global human right as well as the need for water conservation. The global perspective will be presented through the work of two local non-profit organizations working to bring safe water to West Africa and Cambodia–Wells Bring Hope and The Community First Initiatives. Hadiara Diallo, originally from Niger, share her experiences in West African villages with the Wells Bring Hope project and Pierre Mainguy, creator of Community First Initiatives—designed to fight poverty in developing and transitional nations—will share his experiences in rural Cambodia. Both non-profits are empowering people living in forgotten villages to create sustainable means of improving their livelihoods. Activities will include exhibits on water conservations and sustainability by

Pasadena’s Department of Water and Power, Caltech and JPL. At the event, Caltech representatives plan to unveil a self-contained, PV-powered domestic toilet and wastewater treatment system. In addition, there will be an exhibition and demonstration by Muir High School’s urban farm project, Muir Ranch, and a special visit from representative of Friends of the Peace Pilgrim, who will be collecting gently used shoes to be recycled in our community. So bring your used shoes and join us for an exceptional experience! Admission is free. Light refreshments will be provided. Free parking is available in the Central Library parking lot. For Pasadena ARTS bus and other transit schedules, visit www. cityofpasadena.net/artsbus. She is a graduate of Pasadena City College (PCC) nursing school and will ride alongside current PCC students Ariel Eby and Nicole Brown as well as seven other nurses. “Suko embodies everything that nursing represents,” said Karen Knudsen, BSN, RN, Huntington Hospital emergency department manager. “She is compassionate, caring and kind. Suko is passionate about the art of nursing and being able to have a meaningful impact on those that she cares for.” The nurses’ float was built entirely with funds

raised by Bare Root Inc., a nonprofit founded by five Southern California nurses in 2007 upon hearing that Sally Bixby, RN, was selected to serve as president of the 2013 Tournament of Roses. Bixby is the first nurse to serve in this role. Bare Root founders seized the opportunity to honor nurses worldwide, showcasing the unique characteristics of nurses through the nature-themed float, “A Healing Place.” For more information about the nurses’ float, visit www.flowers4thefloat.org. legal process.” Kruckeberg noted that the oversight board would meet around mid-December, depending if they have a quorum. The current property plan that the city has been working on for the last two years includes the former Church of Arcadia site at 21 Morlan Place, which is currently the property directly behind the existing dealership at 55 W. Huntington Drive. The city is currently leasing property to Rusnak for a parking area there. Other land involved in the plan includes property at 121-159 North Santa Anita Avenue, where the city has relocated the former tenants of two buildings. “The properties there are slated for demolition, and ultimately we’d like to be able to do a deal there with those properties,” he said. At the Jun. 19 oversight board meeting of the successor agency, Kruckeberg, who is chairman of the oversight board, informed fellow board members that the disposition of the former Redevelopment Agency’s commercial properties have been primarily a part of the potential deal with Rusnak. Kruckeberg informed the board that “staff has been in negotiations with Mr. Rusnak for years before the agency was dis-

Arcadia Rusnak solved and the negotiations have picked up again since the city has a new city manager on board.” According to the minutes of the oversight board meeting, staff will likely come back to the board with information on the potential deal points of a purchase and sale agreement that would come before the board and then to the DOF for their approval.

Formerly located in Pasadena, the dealership moved to Arcadia in 2002. In 2005, Arcadia signed an agreement with Rusnak, assuring the dealership that it would attempt to secure five adjacent properties, about 4.5 acres in total, for future development. The dealership was obligated to fulfill the minimum capacity requirements of Mercedes-Benz USA. If the dealership

failed to acquire a necessary 14 acres, Rusnak would have to look elsewhere for business, causing a significant revenue loss for the city. Rusnak MercedesBenz offers a large inventory of high-performance luxury cars including the Mercedes-Benz sedans and coupes, SUVs and crossovers, roadsters and supercars, including hybrid models.

“Tired Salesgirl on Christmas Eve.” In Rockwell’s beloved painting, a dazed sales clerk slumps against a wall with her shoes kicked off amid a scattering of disheveled dolls and wrapping paper remnants. While we may smile at Rockwell’s whimsical depiction of one careworn holiday worker, thousands of Americans feel just as worn out during the holiday season without wrapping one gift or attending one party. These done-in citizens are the family members who attend the needs of aging parents or an ill spouse, relative or family friend every day, all year long. By December, many home caregivers feel so weary and overwhelmed with daily duties that the thought of idyllic families enjoying the holidays only adds sadness, depression and resentment. Instead of the last weeks of the year being filled with fond memory-making, many family in-home care providers struggle with feelings of “Bah! Humbug!” from being burdened and isolated from the rest of the celebrating world. “The holidays are particularly challenging for family caregivers because they often feel torn between being there fully for their loved one and wanting to be free to enjoy festivities with family and friends,” said Diane Fortner, Owner of Right At Home of Pasadena. “Fortunately, there are workable solutions so caregivers can do both and avoid extra stress and negative feelings that tend to surface during the holidays. When our staff assists a family with adult home care, we see firsthand how important it is for family caregivers not to feel alone or forgotten while the rest of the community celebrates the season.” Fortner suggests the fol-

met expectations during the hustle and bustle of the holidays often trigger more anger and discouragement. Instead of setting the bar high for caregiving and decorating the house, buying gifts, sending cards, baking goodies, etc., lower the demand factor. Acknowledge feelings. Family caregivers deal with a range of emotions from frustration with lack of help to fear over an unpredictable future. It is sad that the loved one can’t live alone anymore or engage socially like in previous holidays, so caregivers need to set aside time to listen to and work through those more difficult feelings. Allow for “good enough.” If the tree lights are uneven this year, tell yourself that it’s good enough. If you only have time to bake one round of cookies, it’s good enough. If you need to send your holiday cards after January 1, it’s good enough. For family caregivers already stretched thin, perfect isn’t always the wise choice. Be free from the “shoulds.” Free yourself from the mindset that there’s a right way to spend the holidays. Consciously toss aside these statements: “I should feel chipper. I should have people over. I should carry on our usual holiday plans.” Extend compassion to yourself. Compassion and gentleness are gifts family caregivers can give back to themselves. Taking time for regular exercise and leisure activities allows for healthy self-care. For their own holiday wish lists, caregivers might enjoy special treats including nail treatments, massages and restaurant gift cards. Practice letting go. Family caregivers can waste emotional energy wishing circumstances were different for their

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0050739. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to

the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-484-9942 or visit this Internet Web site www.USAForeclosure.com or www.Auction.com using the file number assigned to this case 7042.27643.
