While there were many winners during Boxing Day’s opener at Santa Anita, none could actually top that of Paddock Guard John Shear, 91, returning to his job at the track after facing a near death experience last spring when he saved a young girl

from a bolting horse. Shear threw himself in front of the horse last spring, causing himself great bodily injury that landed him in hospital for several weeks. Doctors and nurses at Huntington Hospital said it was truly a miracle that Shear survived such traumatic injuries. Although his family knew all

the time he’d pull through. “It’s good to be back…” Shear told Beacon Media Monday. “I feel great” he said as he walked briskly like that of a man 60 years his junior. Shear was back at his usual station protecting the public from horses as they approached the tunnel to the

main track in preparation for each race. Scores of people wanted to shake hands with Shear have their photo taken with the famous hero and just say ‘thank you’. Meanwhile the races took center stage with some

How Parents Can Help Keep Children Safe New Laws Take Effect Jan. 1, 2012 # 1 - Keep the Computer Out of the Kids' Bedrooms

In the wake of Sierra Made resident Robert Matheson’s arrest for smuggling child pornography, numerous questions have arisen as to how to deal with a problem that is epidemic and worldwide in scope . Situations such as the case of Robert Matheson are occurring with “increasing regularity” according to authorities. Perhaps there are more questions than answers but

By Terry Miller there are many resources for parents and we’d like to examine some more closely. We have been speaking with Virginia Kice, Western Regional Communications Director ofU.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since this local story unfolded and she kindly directed our attention to Supervisorial Special Agent Rob Abrams – Exploitation and Investigations Group

(CEIG} with regard to precautionary measures a parent can take to prevent their child from becoming a victim. Special Agent Abrams told Beacon Media that the number one precaution a parent should do to protect children from internet predators is to not allow internet access or a computer in the

Sierra Madre Community Members Hold Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Child Pornography

Approximately a dozen residents of Sierra Madre held a candlelight vigil outside the home of Robert Matheson, who was caught smuggling child pornography across the Canadian border and arrested Oct. 17 in Canada. The small but passionate group gathered Wednesday evening to honor any and all victims child pornography.

Robert Matheson, 66, was sentenced Dec. 13 to smuggling pornographic images of teenage boys, as well as sexually explicit videos of teenage boys into Canada. He was arrested at Halifax airport. He was sentenced to 108 days in prison but Crown prosecutors said he’d probably serve only one month.

One of the organizers of the event, Shirley Moore, helped get the word out about the vigil on Sierra Madre Tattler blog and in various other news reports in local media A new twist in the story has just emerged. According to two independent and extremely reliable sources, Matheson was seen in Sierra Madre on or about Thanksgiving. According to one person who knew Matheson well, “he had a high security clearance in US military.” Details are sketchy at best regarding how a return to Sierra Madre took place under the circumstances This poses some significant questions for the Canadian authorities and US. If Matheson’s passport was revoked as deal of returning to court for sentencing and if he was to remain in his home in Canada between 10pm and 7am, how was he allowed to return to the US? We are currently seeking information about Matheson’s return to US in November and will pass on any information.

Matheson Sightings in Sierra Madre During Thanksgiving Pose New Questions

It has been suggested by at least three, independent and extremely reliable sources that Bob Matheson was actually back in Sierra Madre around Thanksgiving despite the fact he was supposed to be in Canada awaiting sentencing. Matheson was served a beer in Lucky Baldwiin’s Delerium in Kersting Court on or around Thanksgiving according to Lisa Brandley, Manager. “ It was definitely him, he was served his usual beer and paid with cash and left rather quickly.”

Additionally, Beacon Media received a phone call stating that Matheson was in town at this time. We posed this to the Canadian authorities and they sent us the following email which tells a completely different story: “Our records indicate he was arrested on October 17. It's not clear from what I'm seeing if he was ever released after that. On October 26 a release on recognizance with surety was indicated with more than a dozen conditions including the surrender

of his passport to Canada Border Services; remaining in his home from 10 p.m. to 7 am daily; reporting to police by phone on a regular basis; stay away from places where children under 16 would be; limited internet access, etc. BUT on October 28 there is another remand warrant issued which would indicate that he was back in custody on that date. The next date mentioned is the sentencing date of December 13.” Chris Hansen, APR Director of Communications, Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service. In a later email she said: “Matheson was released on the conditions I mentioned in the earlier email as of October 28. He reported twice a week in person to the rcmp until his court date in december. We have nothing to indicate he was anywhere but here for that time.” Hansen went on to say that “If people did see him down there, it would be something to report to police. Or, maybe they are simply mistaken.”

By Dorothy Denne Just three more days until: A new year, new appointment books, new planners, new calendars. We review our past, outline our present and plan our future. This is the time when we straddle the timeline, one foot at an ending, the other foot at a beginning. Implied in every beginning is an ending. And yet, in every ending is a beginning. Time for a dose of Vitamin See. Vitamin See can't be purchased in any store. We have to manufacture it for ourselves. Before we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life in the new year, let us take some time to go into

in the New Year. And, I hope I can help you manufacture a few doses of Vitamin See, put a smile on your lips, and put a bit of joy in your hearts. As we end the old and begin the new, I share with you an "author unknown" poem: To leave the old with a burst of song; To recall the right and forgive the wrong; To forget the things that bind you fast To the vain regrets of the year that's past; To have the strength to let go of your hold Of the not worth while of the days grown old; To dare go forth with a purpose true, To the unknown task of the year that's new; To help your brother along the road, To do his work and lift his load: To add your gift to the world's good cheer, Is to have and to give a Happy New Year.

the manufacturing process. Time, too, when some of us get into making resolutions. I am not much for New Year's resolutions, but I think there are a couple worth making. One is to take a daily dose of Vitamin See. Take a mini-retreat. Give yourself credit for all you have accomplished then spend at least five minutes, not doing, but simply being. The other is to, every day, find something to laugh about, even if it is just your own foibles. Laughter doesn't necessarily make our problems disappear, but it can put them in abeyance. When we laugh, we allow ourselves to become more open and responsive to the gift of the moment. It is precisely in those moments when we shed out brittle shells, that joy dances into our lives, transforming and renewing our very beings. I hope you will continue to visit Dorothy's Place

Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez Gary Oldman fans will surely relish in watching him play Smiley, an old-dog spy pulled out of retirement to find a mole in the new film “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” What is astounding about the performance is Oldman’s ability to portray a character who is essentially a spy hunter not as largerthan-life but as cold, quiet, and watchful, characteristics that in the hands of a lesser artist would translate as dull, yet Oldman some-

how manages to make this character exhilarating. Based on John le Carre’s 1974 novel, the film begins in the middle of things, where a mole is presumed to exist in “the circus,” the highest echelon of the British Intelligence Service. Smiley is then given a list of suspicious agents by which he must find the traitor through a process of elimination. As Smiley begins to systematically assess each agent on the suspects list, a series of flashbacks

reveal the personalities he is charged to investigate and the botched missions they were involved in. The film, like its protagonist, is perfectly understated, with a visual palate of cold grays and blues, a powerhouse cast that seems not to play characters but dwell in them, and a densely packed plot that doesn’t move slow but step by step, allowing you to savor the masterful dialogue.

Pasadena Fire and Police Departments Issue Tips for Staying Safe Along Rose Parade Route As the 123nd Rose Parade approaches on Jan. 2, the Pasadena Fire Department and Pasadena Police Department are issuing safety tips for the thousands of overnight campers who will line the route on Jan. 1. The parade route will be a safer place if everyone follows the rules and regulations intended for the safety of all parade-goers. What You Can Do: Overnight camping is permitted only on the night of Sunday, Jan. 1. A permanent position on the sidewalk may be maintained along the parade route beginning at noon on Jan. 1. The “Blue Line” is the honor line. All persons and property such as blankets, chairs, etc., must

remain on the curb until 11 p.m. on Jan 1. At that time spectators may move out to the honor line. Small, professionally manufactured barbeques elevated at least one foot off the ground are allowed on the parade route, 25 feet from buildings and other combustibles. A fire extinguisher must be readily available. Minors under the age of 18 may be on the parade route from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. only if they are under the supervision of adults. Dress for cold weather. Children and seniors may need extra layers of clothing to avoid hypothermia. Drink healthy fluids and consume nourishing meals to avoid dehydration.

Report any suspicious activities and packages to emergency authorities along the parade route. In case of emergency call (626) 744-4241 from a cellular phone or 9-1-1 from a landline phone and know the cross streets from which you are calling. What You Can’t Do Appearance in the parade is prohibited for any entries/marchers that have not been approved by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. Tents, sofas and boxes of any type that can be used as stools or seats are prohibited along the route. Unoccupied chairs are not allowed. Bonfires are strictly prohibited and considered ille-

gal burns. Fireworks are prohibited except as part of scheduled official events. No items may be sold along the parade route without a permit. No public areas – sidewalks, curbs, gutters, streets, ramps – may be cordoned or roped off. No ladders or scaffolding may be used as elevation for viewing the activities. It is illegal to buy, sell or give away horns on the parade route. Pets are not recommended along the parade route because they are easily frightened with sudden, loud noises. Selling space along the parade route, other than grandstand seating, is illegal.

Throwing any projectile into the parade, including seemingly harmless items such as tortillas, marshmallows, flowers, etc., is prohibited. Silly String and similar products are prohibited as well. Vehicles obstructing emergency lanes will be towed. Walking in the street is not permitted during the parade. Open containers of alcohol are illegal on public streets, sidewalks and all other public areas. Sale, possession and use of illegal drugs will not be tolerated. Enhanced security measures will be in effect on the parade route and very evident. Because of large

crowds, Pasadena police officers will resolve problems quickly and remove from the scene anyone who violates the law or disturbs the peace. The Pasadena Fire Department responds to more than twice the number of calls on parade day than on average days. These calls include reports of hypothermia, illegal burning, miscellaneous medical issues, assaults and alcohol-related incidents. For more information about safety along the Rose Parade route visit www.visitpasadena.com and click on Visitor Hotline, visit www. cityofpasadena.net/police or call the Pasadena Fire Department at (626) 744-7276.

Recycle Used Oil & Filters! Do you change your car’s motor oil? Did you know that used motor oil and oil filters are recyclable? Used oil can be re-refined or processed into new motor oil. Currently only 46% of used motor oil is being recycled, which means 20 million gallons may be illegally entering California’s waterways via stormwater systems, posing a great risk to the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water; polluting our waterways and threaten fish and aquatic life. Prevent pollution; recycle used motor oil and filters! Continued from page 1 child’s bedroom. Not allowing web cams of any kind will also minimize risks. Access to Facebook and other social networking sites should be restricted, if not forbidden altogether. The advent of Facebook and similar sites has created a whole network of potential victims of predators who might wish to be your child’s “friend” without knowing anything about the individual at the other end of the mouse. Having (the computer) in a common area is highly advisable for obvious reasons however this is one detail often overlooked. Installing a firewall is crucial. Agent Abrams said that children today are “digital natives” meaning they often know a great deal more than their parents on how computers not only work but do the majority of their socializing on the computer or cell phone. Sophisticated ‘smart phones’ also need to be monitored and usage restricted by parents. In fact, there are numerous safety options for phones like the Apple iphone4s to restrict internet access. As with all activities, parental involvement is key. Schools should and do play an important role also: PUSD for example: offers this information in their parent guide: “Internet Safety For Students” The Pasadena Unified School District prides itself on providing a safe learning environment for its students. An emerging national concern is the inappropriate use of the Internet by students. This problem has the potential to be harmful, and we ask your support in assisting us with this challenge. Across the nation, schools have seen an increase in negative student behavior as a result of messages written from home computers and posted to popular ―chat room‖ or ―message exchange‖ Web sites. Such sites as Myspace. com contain instant messaging components that allow students to chat with other students and to post statements that ordinarily would not be said in a face-to-face conversation. The popularity of these Web sites seems to be growing. Myspace.com, for example, is said to have over 57 million members and has become one of the most popular ―message exchange‖ sites among students nationwide.

Keeping Children Safe Unfortunately, some of these Web sites are being used by child predators, ―cyber bullies,‖ and con artists. To our knowledge, there are no adults officially responsible for monitoring the content on such Web sites, and some students use the sites to participate in online bullying or to threaten harm to other students. The so-called ―cyber bullies,‖ mostly children between the ages of 9 and 14, use the anonymity of the Web to hurt others without witnessing the consequences. Students who are bullied online sometimes do not report these occurrences for fear that they will be barred from using the Internet. Outside of our schools, there have been instances of adults posing as youths and gaining access to student chat rooms. In some cases, these contacts have led to tragedy. Some unsuspecting students post enough personal information that predators are able to locate students’ home or

sources We encourage you to talk with your son or daughter about the potential danger of the Internet. Ask if they have an account with Myspace.com or similar Web sites. If your child is using such a site with your permission, you may want to review his or her profile to ensure that no personal and identifiable information has been posted. We also encourage you to establish rules and guidelines to ensure the safety of your child while on the Internet. Some Web sites offer parental or family guidance for Internet safety; for example, SafeKids.com, located online at http://www.safekids. com, Web Wise Kids, located online at http://www. webwisekids.org, Common Sense by telephone at 866-WEB-WISE, or by e-mail at webwisekids2@aol.com, and CommonSenseMedia. org, located online at http:// www.commonsensemedia.

school addresses, thereby becoming easy targets for predators. The Pasadena Unified School District has blocked the use of Myspace.com and similar Web sites from our school computers. We will continue to block objectionable material as we deem appropriate. Parents should be aware of what their children are writing on the Internet and what others are posting in reply. Myspace.com, for example, is public domain, and anything posted there can be seen by anyone who has Internet access. Although most of what is written at Myspace.com is not immoral, offensive, or illegal, some of it is. If you choose to do so, you may investigate this site by personally going to http://www.myspace.com. The service is free, and users may register using an e-mail address. Once you have registered, you can search by name and e-mail address to see if your child is registered. You can narrow the search results by entering the name of your city. You will be able to view the kinds of personal information, messages, diaries, and photographs that students post to this Web site. Helpful Tips And Re-

org. The Pasadena School District will continue to provide Internet security within our schools. It is important that parents also monitor Internet use at home.” Education is the key to preventing your child from becoming a victim of any crime but particularly cyber crimes. The reality is that young people will trust easily and especially on line. It’s important to remember that disguising one’s identity has become commonplace on the internet. ICE locally serves anywhere between 1-3 search warrants a week in the Western region in regard to child pornography. The statistics are staggering and growing with the remarkable speedaccess to inappropriate websites makes agents ‘ jobs that much more difficult. Operation Predator, a nationwide ICE HSI initiative is designed to protect children from sexual predators, including those who travel overseas for sex with minors, Internet child pornographers, criminal alien sex offenders, and child sex traffickers. ICE HSI encourages the public to report suspected child predators and any suspicious activity

through its toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE or by completing its online tip form. Both are staffed around the clock by investigators. Suspected child sexual exploitation or missing children should be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, an Operation Predator partner, at 1-800-843-5678 or http://www.cybertipline.com. The juvenile Justice Dept. issued a bulletin 10 years ago addressing the growing complexities of the internet . The report read in part: “With remarkable foresight, William Gibson, in his 1984 novel Neuromancer, predicted that society’s increasing reliance on computers and information technology would create an electronic virtual universe that he called Cyberspace. Seventeen years later, cyberspace has become much more than a premise in a sciencefiction novel—it is the equivalent of a gold-rush boomtown. Every second, six new people sign on to the Internet, which, with astonishing speed, has become common place in daily life and increasingly vital to learning and communication. Not surprisingly, youth constitute one of the fastest growing Internet populations. In cyberspace, young people are a mouseclick away from exploring America’s greatest museums, libraries, and universities. Encouraged by parents and teachers to take advantage of the Internet’s incredible educational and recreational opportunities, nearly 30 million children and youthgo online each year to research homework assignments and to learn about the world they live in.” Keeping in mind the rapid growth of the internet and access to just about anything instantly, the above bulletin was an eye-opener for any parent. The world in which we now live as 2011 comes to a close shows that the internet and activity on line is at a staggering all time high and not likely to change. Contact the free hotline set up by ICE at 1-866-DHS2-ICE if you know of or suspect a child could be in danger. Again, Agent Abrams says to contact your local police dept. if you suspect someone may be involved in this or any other crime.

Santa Anita Opening

surprises and a whole lot of racing fun: While Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert filled a significant blank in his extensive resume by winning the Grade I Malibu Stakes with 5-2 choice The Factor, Santa Anita turned back the clock 17 years Monday with an opening day crowd of 44,579, its largest opening day throng since 46,904 attended in 1994. Baffert entered four 3-year-olds in the field of 10 after citing the $300,000 Malibu at seven furlongs as the most glaring omission on his glistening record, but it was the enigmatic The Factor who rose to the occasion. With Martin Garcia aboard, the gray colt with the name taken from Bill O’Reilly’s widely-watched cable news show put on quite a show while timed in 1:19.89. Breaking on the extreme outside, The Factor went directly to the lead, but soon ceded it to Centralinteligence and stablemate Hoorayforhollywood. He regained the advantage nearing the far turn. In the stretch, The Factor gamely resisted a challenge by runner-up Rothko, ridden by Corey Nakatani,

before drawing off to win by 3 ½ widening lengths. Thirdplace Associate, the 7-2 second choice with Ramon Dominguez in the saddle, rallied for last to finish 2 ¼ lengths behind Rothko. As a result, The Factor rebounded from a pair of performances that deeply disappointed Baffert. Following a victory in the Grade I Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar in August, The Factor faltered to fourth as the 2-5 choice in Santa Anita’s Grade I Ancient Title Stakes in October. One month later, he fell back to eighth at odds of 7-1 in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs. Both races were run from the rail post position. On Monday, he accomplished something 23 other runners from the Baffert stable, including three this year, failed to do. He won the Malibu. “It is a good feeling,” Baffert said. He briefly reviewed The Factor’s recent efforts. “He ran great at Del Mar,” he said. “In the Breeders’ Cup, I thought he’d really run well, but he just couldn’t get untracked on that track at Churchill Downs that day. But he likes this track and has really been training well. “It’s exciting to win the

Malibu,’ Baffert continued. “It’s a great race, some great horses have won it, some great trainers. It was lacking on my resume. I can put it on my website tonight. When The Factor runs his race, it’s going to be tough to really beat him. The Factor we know showed up today.” “He was really sharp and ready to win,” Garcia said. “Plus, he really likes this track. I decided to let him run and put me wherever he wanted to put me, and look at what he did. I don’t think there was a horse that could beat him today.” The Factor paid $7.20, $4.80 and $3.60. Rothko returned $6 and $4. The show price on Associate was $3.60. The victory was The Factor’s fifth in nine starts. The winning purse of $180,000 raised his career earnings to $652,180 for owners Fog City Stable and George Bolton. On a picture perfect day, the large crowd marked the first opening day crowd over 40,000 since 2002. It was up 30 percent over the previous year’s on-track attendance of 34,268. The on-track handle of $4,246,751 was an increase of 10 percent over 2010. The overall handle, $12,866,300,

was up 9 percent. Heavily favored Mr. Commons burst between rivals in midstretch to dismantle his opposition while going on to a 3 ¼ -length triumph in the Grade II, $150,000 Sir Beaufort Stakes for 3-yearolds at one mile on turf. “Since I got through, it was great,” said Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith following his third victory of the afternoon. “But I’ve learned you could point this horse at a wall and he’ll run through it if you ask him to.” Irish Art, who defeated Ultimate Eagle by three-quarters of a length for the place, was no match for the winner who was clocked in 1:33.84 for the mile. Mr. Commons, a son of Artie Schiller trained by John Shirreffs, was making his first start since finishing a creditable fifth in the Grade

Santa Anita Opening I Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5. “It was good to have Mike Smith back in the saddle like that,” Shirreffs said. “Whatever Mike wants to do, I’m just fine with that. It’s better to have a win on Opening Day than to have your first one on Closing Day.” Smith had one horse beaten during the early going of the eight-horse Sir Beaufort. Rallying into the stretch, Mr. Commons nearly ran up onto the heels of a rival before Smith’s maneuver that allowed the winner to surge through a slim opening and win under a hand ride. The bay colt, owned by St. George Farm Racing of Ian Banwell, earned $90,000 for the victory to elevate his career earnings to $483,660 from a 3-3-1 record in 10 starts.

After fading badly while going one mile on turf in Hollywood Park’s Generous Stakes last month, Got Even ran away from his opposition over seven furlongs in the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes which was run as race seven. With Garrett Gomez at the controls, Got Even took command at the start and was never headed to defeat runner-up Exotic Slew by 4 ¼ lengths. Passing Game finished third, another nose back in the field of nine. The final time was 1:21.39. “I really didn’t expect him to show that much speed, but he was doing it well, with his ears up,” Gomez said after dismounting from the 12-1 winner. “I knew he was shortening up and I really didn’t know what to expect, but he was able to clear them and stretch them

out pretty good. The way it worked out, he took most of the run out of them.” Stoney Fleece, the 2-1 favorite, never threatened while checking in fifth. Motown Men, the 5-2 second choice, finished seventh after stumbling badly at the start. “He likes this racetrack,” said Peter Miller, who trains Got Even. “He’s gotten better and better since we gelded him at the Del Mar meet, and that’s the only thing I can really point to that turned him around. I was watching the race and I kept saying, ‘When’s he going to stop?’ and he never did.” Got Even rewarded his backers at $27.20 while securing his third win in eight starts for the partnership of Bruce Chandler, Jeff Fink and Marc Umeda. The winning purse of $60,000 increased his earnings to

$105,800. The fillies division of the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes went to odds-on favorite Ismene, who dominated five opposing 2-year-old fillies by 2 ¾ lengths under Smith’s hand ride while leading from start to finish. Ismene, thus, remained unbeaten in three career starts for owner Stephen Ferraro and trainer Bill Spawr while traversing seven furlongs in 1:21.61. Willa B Awesome finished second, 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Warren’s Amber. “We ran into a monster,” commented Martin Pedroza, who rode the runnerup. “She’s really talented, to say the least,” Smith said in the winner’s circle. “What’s exciting about her is there’s room to improve.” Spawr, who also conditions

2011 Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion Amazombie, acknowledged that the homebred daughter of Tribal Rule has as much potential as any horse he’s ever trained. “Bill’s done a magnificent job,” said Ferraro. “I’ve definitely had thoughts about her 3-year-old year, but in the end, it’ll be Bill’s decision. Hopefully, she’ll be an Oaks-type filly.” Ismene, who paid $3.20 for her victory, ran her earnings to $150,630. “We’ll give her a week off and see what we have,” Spawr said. “Then we’ll decide what to do with her next.” Following Monday’s opening day, Santa Anita will be dark on Tuesday and Wednesday before commencing five successive days of racing on Thursday.
