Riverfest 2016 sails ahead - Saturday 21st May Newport’s Riverfest is ready to set sail again, as this popular annual event enters its ninth year. Set on Newport’s historic Quay, everyone is invited to enjoy a wide range of free entertainment.

The event will feature a dramatic opening thanks to the Vectis Corps of Drums.

Local food and drink plus arts and crafts will be available from Island businesses, including a hog roast from the Isle of Wight Bacon Company.

Delicious homemade cakes and fudge will also be on offer.

Local dance groups will be performing street and other modern dance, including students from Newport-based LVB dance studio. Traditional Ceri Irish Dancers will delight the crowds with their beautiful costumes and talented performances. Short & Sweet will once again be compering the event.

The arrival of one of the world’s smallest tall ships T.S. Caroline Allen from the Little Brig Sailing Trust is sure to be a highlight of the event. Historic boats will be on show from the Classic Boat Museum. A police launch will also be sailing up the Medina, no doubt to keep an eye on the Crew of the Rose pirates and the Wolfgang Vikings. Cowes Sailability Club will be sailing to Riverfest on Dougal and Zebedee!

One of the Dunkirk ‘little ships’ will also be attending. The Papillon motor yacht was one of the armada of sea craft that rescued stranded British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during WW2. The gallant efforts of their crews and the Royal Navy helped save over 300,000 servicemen.

The crew from Medina Valley Centre will be helping young people explore the fascinating creatures of the deep that can be found in the mud of the wildlife-rich River Medina. You will also have a chance to paddle your own canoe and discover the many courses and activities offered by the Centre for young people.

Riverfest is the only sustainable transport event on the Isle of Wight and those visiting are encouraged to walk, cycle, sail or use public transport. Island Bikeworks will be on hand to give guidance on how to repair your bike, or you could just let him do it. If you would like to see your old bicycle go to a good home, then bring it along and donate it to Recycle Bikes for Africa. You can also find out about computer reclamation and recycling.

Newport residents will be able to sign-up to the new Emergency Wardens scheme, which Newport Parish Council has just announced, to help prevent flooding and give assistance in emergencies. Dozens of local charities will be in attendance for visitors to support, and to find out about the many positive projects they are involved in to help improve island life.

Wolverton Folk & Blues Fair

The sixth annual Wolverton Folk & Blues Fair will take place in the stunning grounds of Wolverton Manor, Shorwell on Saturday 14th May from11.30am to 8.00pm.

Since its sell-out launch in 2011, the festival has served up locally produced food, children's activities, craft stalls, circus skills, Morris dancing, homemade cakes and tea, plus the ever-popular Real Ale tent!

Each year the organisers work hard to provide a great line up of artists and bands and this year, they are pleased to announce the award-winning bluesman from the USA Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges will be playing soul drenched rhythm and blues at its danceable best!

As well as the main stage, the popular beer tent acoustic stage will make a welcome return this year providing a full and varied programme, featuring some of the best folk and blues musicians the globe has to offer. Artists confirmed include The Sail Pattern, Cajundaze, MoonShiners, Spike Oatley, The Damien Paul Band, Holly Kirby, The Dollymopps, Wight Ukers, Figjam, Anna Rice plus many more to be announced.

The Wolverton Folk & Blues Fair is being held in aid of Leukaemia Research and Brighstone Primary School. Tickets are £6.00 in advance/£9.00 on the day and children under 12 are free.

A NEW ERA OF TRAVEL

Hovertravel is all set to update one of the Island’s unique attractions with two new craft coming into service later this summer, as the culmination of a £10 million, four year project to replace their fleet. For over fifty years, Hovertravel has served the local communities of the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, faithfully transporting people, parcels and pets across the Solent on the quickest ferry service.

“We ordered two new British built craft to benefit from the obvious advances in technology since our existing fleet was built,” explains Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel. “Our research indicated that two, more efficient craft would be the best replacement option and would allow us to continue to serve our customers in the most effective way.

The new craft will take advantage of the latest developments in engine efficiency and passenger comfort whilst retaining the market leading eight minute journey duration.”

The two new craft were fully designed and built by Hovertravel’s sister company Griffon Hoverwork in Southampton. Working closely with the award winning team at Griffon, Hovertravel identified and specified the exact details for their craft.

This is a project which will see the world’s newest hovercraft operated here from the Island and Hovertravel’s input will inform the design of passenger hovercraft around the globe for decades to come.

The new craft will be more efficient to operate, incorporating a self-loading ramp for passengers and allowing better access for reduced mobility passengers, whilst maintaining the critically short turnaround time.

Using two, more fuel-efficient engines, the craft have a slower propeller pitch that results in a completely different noise profile and making for a quieter ride for the passengers. On-board comfort has also been catered for, with the introduction of informative TV screens and the latest in marine passenger seat design.

“For the outside of our new craft we designed a dynamic representation of the union flag which uses the red, blue and white background of the craft to create a traditional look with a contemporary feel,” explains Loretta Lale, Hovertravel’s Commercial and Marketing Manager. “We wanted to celebrate the Britishness of our operation. The hovercraft is a British invention and, here in the Solent, over fifty years later, Hovertravel is the only scheduled passenger hovercraft service in the world. As both a local community service and an international tourist attraction we are proud to fly the flag for Britain. With images of our unique craft shared daily, we are excited about the colourful impact our new fleet will make on the Solent.”

During May, Hovertravel is progressing with the induction process for their first new craft, conducting a comprehensive training programme which will involve every member of staff, from pilots to engineers, crew to cashiers and even the cleaners. Also in May, Hovertravel will start to offer extra special preview trips to their customers and Blue Card holders (available free from hovertravel.co.uk).

The names of the two new craft, Solent Flyer and Island Flyer are straightforward and simple; describing what the hovercraft do and where they do it.

Across the road from Bembridge Station, the Spithead Hotel had been built by the railway company to accommodate the thousands of guests that they were sure to arrive.

The guests didn’t arrive and the railway and hotel were never overburdened with customers.

Bembridge didn't take off as a resort and by the 1920s the harbour at St Helens had lost its trade to other ports. By the early 1950s, some trains to Bembridge were literally carrying only two passengers and in 1953 the line was closed. The Spithead Hotel lingered on until it was demolished in 1989.

Today, the original harbour sea wall complete, some say, with mooring rings, can still be seen. Now landlocked in the middle of the meadows just across the railway line from Brading station, it has become the public footpath that runs from the end of Quay Lane to Centurions Wood. Find the wall and jump down onto the grass that was once the harbour foreshore and take a close look. Here and there are what seem to be snail shells - they are not. They are Victorian winkles and mussels, marooned forever, a reminder of the days when the lapping of the sea could be heard in Brading.

An appreciation of Cliff Michelmore

During my life I've always been particularly proud of famous Islanders.

These include Jeremy Irons, Sheila Hancock, Phill Jupitus, Marius Goring, Craig Douglas, Mark King, Brian Murphy and Snowy White, to name but a few.

The first to make any real impact on me was Cowes born Cliff Michelmore, who sadly died in March at the age of 96. I was just one of sixteen million who listened to him every Sunday lunchtime on the Light Programme's Two Way Family Favourites with Jean Metcalfe.

When I met my future mother-in-law, the late Peggy Greenham, one of the first things she told me was that she went to school with Cliff Michelmore.

The town of Cowes, and indeed the whole of the Island, were so proud of his considerable achievements. In media circles he was the professional's professional. His working colleagues and the great British public so admired his skill in fronting live television shows like Panorama, Tonight, 24 Hours and BBC1's Holiday programme. There is no question he was the lynch pin of the BBC's current affairs programmes.

I was lucky enough to visit Cliff at his home near Petersfield in 1998 and found him to be the perfect host. I was in awe of his talents and much more nervous than usual. I even made a brief false start which didn't help the situation. What was he thinking at that precise moment?

I'd wondered for 18 years. I only found out last month, from a relative of Cliff's, that he actually enjoyed the interview and was particularly impressed with my research.

As soon as I met Cliff I sensed he was blissfully unaware of his popularity. To him it was a job and he did the best he could with it. There was not a hint of an ego or any self importance. Despite knowing there were millions watching him live on television he was never

flustered. The only time he was ever nervous was when he fronted the first general election results programme after the death of the iconic broadcaster Richard Dimbleby. Cliff told me: "It was rather daunting. No-one could be compared to him. He was one of the greatest broadcasters of all time."

I was keen to rekindle his Island years.

The family had moved here from Devon because his father had TB and the air was deemed healthier and the Ventnor Sanatorium was close at hand. Cliff was born here but his father died when he was just two years old. Around six years later his mother also died and he was brought up by relatives Joe and Vi Butchers at Baskett's Farm, Gurnard. He enthused about living on the Rew Street farm. "It was such a happy time for me I just loved it and did my homework sat by the nearby pond. I also remember reading my first book there, Scott of the Antarctic."

Cliff attended the Cowes Denmark Road School (they changed the name a few times) and it is now a car park. In fact, he spent his whole school career there and two teachers in particular had a great influence on his subsequent life, Mr Guppy, the headmaster, and Mr Waller.

"They became father figures in my life and I went to them for advice," reflected Cliff. Later he sought their thoughts as to whether he should train to become a Methodist minister, as he was a keen member of the Mill Hill Road church. In the end he was advised the RAF might suit him better and so it proved.

Like all healthy kids young Cliff was into mischief. When the heavy laden fruit lorry came up the Newport Road hill , filled with fruit from the Cowes docks, he and his mates knew it slowed down and they stole fruit from the back of the lorry and sped off to the nearby copse.

Once they stole a huge crate of bananas and found most of them were green.

They didn't keep any themselves, instead they left them on the doorsteps of people they thought might like them.

Cliff loved Cowes Week and knew it was coming when the town's Marvin brothers walked by smelling of cigar smoke and camphor balls. It meant they had taken their reefer jackets and white trousers out of their wardrobes ready for the event!

He left the Island in his teens to join the RAF but came back many years later to buy a summer home in Bembridge.

Eventually, after many years service, he was sent to Hamburg as the officer in charge of the RAF element of the British Forces Network. That was to change his life forever. Derek Jones, who co-hosted Two Way Family Favourites, had to go into hospital the day before a Sunday broadcast and Cliff was told he would have to replace him, despite having little actual experience in broadcasting, particularly to sixteen million listeners. At the time he didn't see it as a big chance.

It was, and he also met his wife. At the London end was Jean Metcalfe and it was love over the airwaves. They were eventually the subject of a joint This Is Your Life.

The final words are left to his Cowes relative June Butchers, who got me my interview with Cliff: "We loved him, we respected him and we could never imagine our lives without him. For us he was indestructible."

This month we will be making a teddy bear using polymer clay.

You will need two blocks of clay in different colours, two beads for eyes and a tile to cook the bear on. The teddy is a fun project that is ideal for children to make with adult supervision. All of the items you need are available at my craft store: Quackers About Craft.

Cut the clay into pieces.

Wrap what you have left in cling film as this will keep it from going soft.

Roll the two colours for the body together and form a pear shape.

Roll the piece for the head and also form a pear shape. Make the ears by breaking the clay into two, rolling into balls and flattening. Form a ball with a small piece of the clay. Mix together the pieces for the arms and roll into two small sausage shapes.

Now we can put it all together. First take the body and cut from the widest end a third of the way up then roll each side into tubes, this forms the legs.

Mix the colours for the blanket together then roll out so it’s thin and cut a square out of the clay.

step five Place the eyes and ears onto the head, then attach the head to the body along with the arms. Finally place blanket in teddy’s arms, and now he needs to be baked in an oven on 130 degrees, gas mark 4 for 30 minutes.

And the there you have it a lovely little friend or a gift for that special someone.

This is a call to action to everyone on the Isle of Wight. We want you to work with us to address the challenges we face in providing health and care services.

My Life A Full Life has launched an Island-wide conversation into how we can shape the Island’s health and care services around people’s needs. We have had, and continue to have, really useful conversations about where the problems are. The next stage will be a series of public workshops in May that will take place across the Island.

The events will seek your thoughts on how services could be redesigned and will focus on:

The challenge The Isle of Wight is changing.

People’s health needs are shifting and we need to change how we care for each other. We have an increasingly elderly population with complex health and care needs creating unmanageable demands for our services. Services that are already struggling with capacity in part due to workforce challenges as more people retire and we face difficulties with recruitment. If we don’t take action now, the combined Isle of Wight health and social care system will face a funding shortfall of £52 million by 2020.

Urgent care: Direct services that people rely on for immediate and unplanned care. Planned care: Services including non-emergency hospital care, and the role of self-care and preventing ill health. Women and children: Services that care for women during pregnancy and birth and also for children. It will include children’s and adolescents’ mental

health. Mental Health: Including adults in acute episodes, as well as ongoing care and support for recovery and sign-posting. Frailty: Support for those at all ages who are frail and vulnerable, for example people with dementia, as well as planning to support choice and control of care in the last years of life. Long term conditions: Bringing long term conditions into a joined up, accessible service with the aim of keep people independent and selfcaring for as long as possible.
