The Hope Historical Society will hold their next Meeting on October 14 at 2PM at the Howland Barn, 35 Ryefield Road in Hope. The Hope Historical Society invites the community to participate in our October 2023 Open Forum meeting ìRhode Island Memorabiliaî. Our September meeting focused on HHS sharing artifacts and memorabilia acquired during 2022-2023 and proved such a success that HHS decided to continue the fun by encouraging HHS members and guests to display, discuss, and share their own memorabilia from Hope and its surrounding areas and Rhode Island. HHS will show a short movie “Report from Rhode Island” produced during World War II to keep up morale in 48 states. All are welcome!

Shining red and yellow eyes peer from the dancing shadows. This could be a scene from a haunted forest — or a cozy living room fireplace.

A cast iron figure of an owl perched on a twisted branch decorates each of these andirons, which sold as a pair for $660 at Morphy Auctions. They use the fire to their advantage with colored glass marbles that catch the light for eyes. Appropriately, they are marked “Bright Eyes” on the reverse.

Andirons have been used for hundreds of years to hold the logs off the fireplace floor, allowing for air circulation and letting the fire burn brighter. They are also decorative, with styles changing over time. Animal and bird figures became popular by the 19th century.

Owls have been used in art and decoration since ancient times. Their big bright eyes and ability to see at night make them a symbol of wisdom. But being nocturnal, not to mention their eerie calls, means they are also associated with darkness and bad luck. Of course, around Halloween, when it’s time to be scary, a sign of bad luck can be a good thing!

Q:Ifound the strangest tea set in my father’s attic. It must be for children because the pieces are small. The background is white with an old lady holding a baby, a jester, and a frog smoking a pipe printed in red. The border and flowers are red, too. Most pieces have “Punch” printed on the bottom. There are 16 pieces, and all are in great condition. Can you tell me anything about the set and its possible value?

A:The tea set is a children’s set made by Charles Allerton & Sons, Staffordshire, England, in the late 19th century. The figures you describe are the famous slapstick puppets, Punch and Judy and their baby. The Punch character originated in 16th-century Italy. target of a hit by Punch’s “slapstick.” Slapstick also began in 16th-century Italy when two thin pieces of wood were slapped together to make a loud exaggerated slapping sound during comedy shows. Young workers and retirement savings

Young adults newly introduced to the professional arena may not immediately be thinking of the future when their careers will come to a close. Retirement may seem like a distant goal when it’s 50 years or more away. However, pushing off retirement savings because it is not viewed as a necessity could turn out to be a signiﬁcant mistake.

According to Mass Mutual, the economic disruption caused by the global pandemic pushed retirement to the bottom of many workers’ lists of ﬁnancial priorities. That was especially so among young professionals. A 2019 survey found roughly half of millennial and Generation Z professionals believe they are not saving enough for retirement. Student loan burdens are another reason why certain people may delay saving for retirement until they are older.

Young workers need to get the facts about retirement. For example, The U.S. Social Security Administration says that Social Security taxes that people now pay into the Social Security Trust funds that used to pay benefits to current beneficiaries, not future ones. The Board of Trustees estimates that, in 2041, and based on current law, the Trust Funds will be depleted since people are living longer and the birth rate is low. The taxes being paid now will not be enough to pay the full benefit amounts scheduled for future retirees.

Young people can no longer rely on Social Security beneﬁts to ﬁnance their retirements in the United States. Rather, young workers need to be proactive and take control of their own retirement savings.

• Experts advise following the general rule of saving 10 percent to 12 percent of your salary when you are in your 20s, including factoring in any employer match.

• Working for companies that offer deﬁned-contribution plans like a 401(k) or 403(b) can make it easier for young profes-

sionals to begin saving for retirement.

• Setting aside a portion of your income early on in retirement savings ensures more years of savings and investments will beneﬁt from decades of compounding.

• Those who contribute to a retirement plan may receive an immediate tax break because the contributions come out of paychecks before taxes are withheld. Many of these plans also offer the advantage of taxdeferred growth. This translates to not being required to pay taxes each year on capital gains, dividends or other yield distributions

if the money is not withdrawn before age 59½. Speak with a ﬁnancial advisor to learn more about tax-advantaged accounts.

• T. Rowe Price says there are certain benchmarks that can help people save enough money for retirement. By age 30, you should have .5 times the amount of your salary. At age 35, that amount should increase to 1.5 times your salary. These numbers are based on an assumed retirement age of 65 and with a household income growth of 5 percent until age 45 and 3 percent thereafter.

• According to research from Qualtrics, young workers don’t plan on working until they can receive full beneﬁts from Social Security. Twenty-four percent plan to retire early, and 41 percent want to do so by the time they turn 50. That could spark more ambition among younger generations to save for retirement and to save more aggressively.

Even if retirement is many years in the future, young workers need to start saving for retirement early on to be able to retire comfortably. MM23C518

Back in the early 80s computer and video game technology was thriving, and while the graphics and hardware may look lame to the modern eye, it was groundbreaking at the time. The digital boom of the decade inspired countless elements of pop culture, including ﬁlm, which in turn brought us Tron

If you don’t recall, Tron dropped in theaters in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn. He was your average disgruntled computer programmer with hacking goals who gets sucked into a computer mainframe. Produced by Walt Disney, it has the distinction of being one

Tron got great reviews, but only did okay at the box office. Fortunately, it gained a cult following of computer nerds, tech junkies, and gamers that made it the sci-fi legend it is today. In 2010 the sequel, Tron: Legacy was released and in 2012 the TV series Tron: Uprising made its debut. Maybe the franchise started off as low tech 1980s, but that’s why Tron is loved. All that stuff in the plot is still cool and cutting edge - the graphics are just better now!

Anyways (surprise, surprise) Tron inspired plenty of video games and its very own toy line. In 1982 and perfectly timed for the release of the film, TOMY toys of Japan released four action figures (Tron, Flynn, Sark, and Warrior) and two light cycles. It might seem like a small offering compared to the franchises of today, but the limited production makes the Tron original toy line so much more desirable to collectors. TOMY was known for mechanical toys, but the action figures they produced for Tron were high quality, eye catching, and fun to play with. A win for parents, TOMY, and kids!

The fact that the original Tron toy line was so well loved and played with, combined with the fact that only six toys were ever created makes factory sealed, unused, mint-in-box examples nearly impossible to ﬁnd.

• You can use self-stick notes to organize your errands. Use a note for each location, with instructions or shopping lists on each. • Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. The button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.

• “This is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. They can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop one in straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to soften and melt.
