To Beach News readers from all over the world, hello! Hope you are all well and having fun on our island with all this sun. Things are looking very positive for all of us out here, even our brothers, in Greece, hopefully will come out of this crisis at some stage, and a smile will shine on their faces to warm them up again, to party and dance all day and night as they used to do. Welcome to Cyprus my dear visitors, to Paphos especially, where the sun and beaches are waiting for you. For you to enjoy and keep memories of. It’s a good decision of yours, visiting the Eastern Mediterranean part of the European Union, so you know where your borders end. Hoping all together that you find out more about the history of this beautiful island and learn that our borders could be even bigger if we could solve the Turkish occupation on the northern side. While you are here, I hope that you spend more time out rather than lying all day in front of the pool of the hotel that is hosting you. Paphos is a very beautiful place to visit, it has everything you need, from good hospitality, to educational archaeological sights, fantastic night life and the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean sea. Not every one of you will leave the island without any complaints, so in order to minimize the possibility of disappointed visitors I will give some advice. Firstly, read Beach News and visit its quality sponsors. Secondly, take care of the sun, keep your protection cream on every three hours, (Caroten) is established for years. Thirdly, when you get in a taxi demand from the driver to turn on his taxi metre, make sure you do. Fourthly, to the youngsters that like to party and drink, do not underestimate the locals when you are not sober, respect the place you are visiting, many fights occur every summer. Do not forget that you are in their territory, so you may see one but in a minute 20 may appear. This is for your good sake. In any case, you are all welcome to our big family. In this edition you can find many interesting articles. All sponsors are guaranteed by Beach News, if any complaints occur, don’t hesitate, send us an email or even call us to sort it out for you. LIVE YOUR OWN FAIRYTALE ON THE ISLAND OF LOVE.

I see you have just renovated your restaurant. Yes, we have done a major overhaul. It was necessary, but all along keeping an eye on the main topic of keeping the traditional theme. It’s good that you are keeping the local tradition.

PAPHOS, ETERNALLY DESIRED BY KINGS, QUEENS, GODS AND GODDESSES. The Paphos Regional Board of Tourism and the four Municipalities of the Region, Paphos, Geroskipou, Peyia and Polis Chrysochous are promoting Paphos as the best choice for couples who are planning to marry, and as one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean for Wedding events. Just recently, Paphos has agreed to a series of actions aiming that in the near future, Paphos

will be established as one of the top popular destinations in the Mediterranean for Wedding events and Honeymoon. The Paphos Regional Board of Tourism is in close collaboration with the Wedding Officers of the four Municipalities, hoteliers and tourist agents, and the whole effort will focus on a unilateral projection of Paphos through written and electronic material, and with the empowerment of projection with the participation in specialised wedding exhibitions aiming at the markets of the U.K, Russia and Israel.

Additionally, special emphasis will be given, among others, to the accommodation of specialised tourist agents-overseas wedding events organizers, as well as the arrangement of presentations and workshops for better exposure of Paphos to different existing and new partners. The Region of Paphos today is already a popular destination for wedding events, with a very rich offering of choices for the venues as well as the menu, the accommodation and in general the hospitable stay of the couples and their guests in Paphos.

ndy and Jenny met each other while Andy was studying Fine Arts and Sculpture and Jenny was studying Radiography in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Andy opened “The Wooden Horse” a coffee shop near the University to fund his studies, which is where they met. They married in Nicosia in 1967, and a few months later returned to South Africa where they opened “The Castle Inn”, a restaurant and beer garden in Johannesburg. In 1972, they moved to Cyprus, settled down in Famagusta, when their lives were disrupted with the 1974 Turkish invasion, forcing them to return to South Africa. There, Jenny and Andy’s two sisters Lya and Maro, opened a Greek restaurant “The Three Sisters” in Johannesburg. Andy and Jenny returned to Paphos permanently, with their four children in 1980, where they took over the restaurant form its original owner Kokos “Hondros” (meaning the fat man) and kept the name and its tradition. They have been running it ever since. Andy simultaneously had many successful art exhibitions, won first prize at the International Biennale in Cairo, as well as writing three books of which

PAPHOS, THE POPULAR DIVING DESTINATION The Municipality of Paphos, in a joint attempt with the Pancyprian Association of Diving Schools and the Paphos Regional Board of Tourism, are working hard to establish Paphos as a popular diving destination of the Mediterranean. Working on a strategy for the development of Diving Tourism, protection of the Marine Environment and enrichment of Marine life, the three, have agreed to a series of actions, aiming to establish Paphos, in the near future, as one of the most popular diving destinations of the Mediterranean. With the mayor of Paphos, Mr. Savvas Vergas, acting as the main coordinator, the whole effort will focus on the creation of an artificial reef, with the sinking of a ship, a method that will follow European prerequisites and guidances. Already, an attempt is underway for the use of the ship Demetrios II that is stranded at the St. George

area of Chlorakas, while the suggested area of sinking and creating an artificial reef is near the same site. Today, Paphos is already a popular diving destination, while the creation of such an artificial reef will add to the enrichment of

the Marine life and the submarine environment, which translates to the upgrading of the diving tourism trade, the diving experience, a quality lifestyle and the development of the tourist trade with all its positive feedback to the local and national economy.

MOBEE PAYMENTS core business is the virtual distribution of secure electronic tokens of value (predominantly prepaid airtime at present) and transactional services across its national footprint of touch points. The Company’s stated strategy is to expand its national footprint of touch points, both organically and acquisitively, to fulfil the significant demand for the delivery of multiple prepaid products currently being ( CytaMobile , MTN, PrimeTel, Moneysafe, Paysafe, Otenet, Lenontel, Cablenet )and services through a single distributor, across various delivery mechanisms and via numerous merchants or vendors. The diverse option of delivering mechanisms makes MOBEE PAYMENTS unique. The options range from hand held POS terminals, touch screens, various self service vending machines and till integration systems. Thus facilitating the deployment of the appropriate solution in each retail environment. Why do consumers use prepaid products and services? • Prepaid products and services are the ultimate budgeting tool, as consumers nave absolute choice and control over what they spend; • The majority of prepaid transactions are cash based and using prepaid removes the requirement for credit checks; • Prepaid products and

Yes, not only the structure and furniture but the menu too has maintained its Cypriot taste. It is essential in this area for Cypriots and visitors, because so much has been lost of our local colour with the rapid development. What are your specialities? The menu. All our recipes derive from advice and help from family, mothers, aunts, cousins, etc, a lot of tasting and testing, it’s a continuous exercise in our kitchen. Our main menu stresses Cypriot specialities and seasonal foods such as Mousaka, Afelia, Yemista, Sheftalia and many more. We always cook Souvla and Suckling Pig of Feast Days with the related soups and side dishes. And in the background old and new Greek music complimenting our authentic atmosphere. What does the future hold for you? Hard work, attention to detail and, of course, taking care of our valued customers. Any dreams? Yes, we all hope to get financial sponsorship to help create a gallery to house the extraordinary works of Andy Hadjiadamos in Paphos so as to share his creativity with one and all. services can conveniently topped up, either virtually of physically as and when required by consumers; • Prepaid products and services are sold across a broad footprint of traditional and non traditional outlets; and • Prepaid products and services enable the countries unbanked consumers to transact efficiently. How does Otero add value to its customers? By facilitating a wider range of electronic products additional profits are generated for the retailer. The supply of products and services via prepaid channels is becoming an increasingly significant distribution model. This is because the distribution of physical product is often logistically difficult and very costly. The limited availability of product range in physical format is also contributing to the shift to electronic products. By consolidating all the existing products on one efficient point of sale device an exceptional level of service and convenience for the consumer achieved. The company’s ability to develop and distribute innovative prepaid products and services through its national footprint of touch points has allowed it to “take” first world products and services to consumers in a quick, easy and convenient manner. “TAKING THE PRODUCT TO THE PEOPLE” In essence, MOBEE PAYMENTS is able to enhance the consumer’s ability to transact conveniently, affordably and with greater accessibility and choice. French Financiers, Maids and the IMF - Who is the real Goldfinger? By David R. Walker (Southboy) Dominique Strauss-Kahn

A

s Joan Rivers would say the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn in New York in May this year brought sexy back to the dreary world of High Finance. The head of the prestigious and influential International Monetary Fund, IMF was arrested at JFK International airport shortly before boarding a flight back to Paris. With images of Strauss-Kahn’s haggard face caught on international news channels as he appeared in a Manhattan courtroom on charges of proposed sexual harassment of a New York hotel maid, his resignation followed swiftly. Now one of the most prized positions in the financial and political world has been finally settled with the new Chief of the IMF being named as Christine Lagarde. The third world countries including the BRIC nations desperate call for an IMF chief from the emerging economies to take control of the world financial institution has fallen on deaf ears in New York and Paris. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde takes over as head of the IMF, the World’s primary lending institution. It is the very prolific Christine Lagarde who has been seen internationally

courting votes for her successful bid to become the institutions’ first woman president and now is successfully named as the Chief of the IMF. With Lagarde at the helm, there is no risk of middle-aged men chasing after underpaid hotel maids from the Third World in plush Manhattan hotel rooms. Secondly Lagarde has the backing of the EU and the French president Nicholas Sarkozy, hardly a role model who after being elected President swiftly divorced his wife and married Italian super model Carla Bruni, who is not only become the French First Lady but stars in the upcoming Woody Allen film, Midnight in Paris, premiering at this year’s Festival du Cannes. After the Strauss-Kahn arrest, Woody Allen should consider a follow up called Midnight in Manhattan involving middle-aged financiers and maids, which could prove a hit at both Davos and Cannes. What is the real reason behind the arrest and public humiliation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn? Secondly has the IMF really suffered a major public relations shock? The IMF is too powerful to re-

ally lose sleep over its public relations image. Conceived towards the end of World War II, in 1944 the winning Allied powers held an exclusive financial conference in 1944 in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire deciding that all foreign currencies would initially be backed by the US dollar. The IMF was conceived and backed by the Bretton Woods fixed rate monetary system. In 1971 this system was not viable and promptly dissolved by US President Richard Nixon. By 1973 most of the major currencies were allowed to float on the international stock markets against each other and not backed by the US dollar on a fixed exchange rate. The dollar previously backed by the price of gold was dissolved and now backed by nothing more than the sustainability of the US Federal government, with financial leverage held by the massive gold reserves sitting in a vault in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Special Drawing rights are a financial term in

which international reserve; in this case gold is used to supplement the country’s currency reserves. Thus gold is a tangible reserve asset by which the dollar gains its strength. Strauss-Kahn’s arrest in New York came just after he allegedly uncovered that the US gold reserves held in Fort Knox were apparently running out. Special Drawing rights consist of the four major international currencies, the dollar, pound, Euro and the yen, all calculated as the sum of specific amounts of the four basket currencies valued in U.S. dollars, on the basis of exchange rates quoted daily on the London stock market. If one of these four major currencies were about to devalue significantly such as the American dollar then the IMF would not have any leverage in which to determine the SDR rate of interest when lending vast amounts of money to developing or impoverished countries. The IMF’s strength depends on the sustainability of these four

economic currencies and in turn the macro-economic policies of Japan, England, America and Europe. If the former head of the IMF became suspicious that one of these four currencies strength is not sustainable, is it not to the advantage of the powerful elite that he be removed and replaced with a candidate who would retain the dominance of these four economies, maintaining the IMF’s credibility. While Lagarde is being celebrated as the new IMF chief, Strauss-Kahn is under house arrest in Manhattan awaiting his fate and somewhere a hotel maid is laughing all the way to the bank. As the IMF heads into a new era with Christine Lagarde as Chief, steering the organization into a new prolific and less scandal tainted direction, the real story and political agenda surrounding the arrest of Dominique StraussKahn last month will remain a mystery at least for the moment.

One month ago the Cyprus government passed a new legislation which allows property buyers to skip the developers and apply for the issuing of their separate property Title Deeds using their contract of sale. This is the most significant legislation change ever made, since the absence of Title Deed diminishes the value of a property, makes it extremely hard to sell and it is impossible to get a mortgage especially now, known that many developers are struggling financially due to the economic crisis.

The concept is a tri-partnership between international restaurateur Peter van Rijn, businessman Daniel Robey and Cypriot designer Anastasia Kypragora. “We wanted to bring a specialized ethnic style to Paphos, which has never been done before, and most importantly we wanted to match this style with 5-Star food at 1-Star prices,” says van Rijn. “To do this we recruited Michelin Star Chef Robert Bowman, who was instrumental in setting up the world famous Moyo’s chain throughout Southern Africa, “ adds van Rijn. “We are steering clear of the typical route followed by most restaurants here, offering anything and everything on their menus, and we’re going to focus on what we’re good at, which is excellent aged steaks and meat dishes at unbeatable prices. Don’t get me wrong, we still have premium wines and some steaks at Businessman prices, but overall our menu is within everyone’s reach, and we want people to feel it is a place they can come and relax, take their time and eat at their own pace. And I think we’ve achieved our objective with our great range of family steak and meat platters.” So if you want a break from the norm, and of course excellent food at excellent value, visit The Lodge next to the Amathus Hotel, or call them on 7000-MORE (6673) to make a reservation for lunch or dinner. In addition, the issuing of a Title Deed adds significant value to a property, which can be mortgaged at any Bank if desired. A property with Title Deed also attracts many more buyers and enables a resale transaction to proceed in a far more straightforward manner. The most important factor however, is that the Title Deed gives absolute and undisputed ownership of your property. The procedure requires an architect or civil engineer to inspect the property for any illegalities or irregularities. Following their report, since the law also incorporates an amnesty on any illegalities or irregularities already made to the property, and when some other procedures are also followed, an application will be made to the relevant authorities (like land registry, building authorities, inland revenue, municipalities, etc) for the issuing of the Title Deeds. Simultaneously our accounts department with tax experts and accountants will commence with obtaining your Tax Clearance. Once all the necessary procedures have been completed the Title Deeds will be issued. The procedure requires coordination of a team of specialized professionals and good knowledge of the new legislation procedures. At BuySell we have formed a team of professional architects, civil engineers, solicitors, valuers, accountants and property experts trained in the new legislation. Since the legislation is new, the procedure must be followed to the letter. Therefore we have invested a significant amount of time, money and energy to form a team with the top professionals in the country that can deal with speed and efficiency. We are here to make it easy and help you get your title deed.

Electorate protest… T

he Cyprus elections for 56 parliamentary seats and a new Speaker of the House are finally over. The nauseating campaigns full of promises-for-votes have become a thing of the past but the results have left a bitter taste in peoples’ mouth. The only consolation, a refreshing new crop of young faces has emerged out of the cloud to offer a sliver of hope for a badly needed change to the political scene. Never before has there been such a phenomenon where over 130.000 out of 529.000 registered voters refused to exercise their right to vote. Disillusioned by the behaviour of the leadership and political parties, those disgruntled citizens have spoken decisively and sent a clear message; a message that they no longer believe in the politicians or the present political process! In doing so, they have expressed their mistrust and abhorrence in a system that thrives on intractable dogmatic ideologies. Citizens’ Direct Action has send out a clear warning and this revelation should concern the leadership. Have the politicians in Cyprus learned any lessons at the polls? Absolutely none! Their bickering and sabre thrashing at their opponents is as alive today as ever before. Citizens have finally put aside their political affiliations, used common sense and refused to be used as political marionettes in the dirty business of politics. Their absence at the poll stations indicates that politicians are not worthy of their vote: a great day for democracy indeed! As if people did not have enough, the presidential elections are next to follow in 2013. In view of this, the prostitution of politics has not stopped but it continues behind closed doors. Without transparency, the political parties are re-positioning themselves (again) for the next round of secret deals, counter-deals and horse-trading in their attempt to crown their own man as the next President of the Republic. In a true sense, the little island of Cyprus does not need a “president” and the entire process should be scrapped and save millions of wasted taxpayers’ money! A parliamentary system in a representative democracy with a Prime Minister is more than sufficient. Having a “president” as the head of state, it’s meaningless and it certainly does not help the country whatsoever - it never did in the past and it will never do so in the future. It is an unnecessary luxury the nation can ill afford. Such preferential systems

normally thrive in corrupt third world countries - mostly in Africa, Middle East and South America - where nations are accustomed to megalomania, brutal injustice, despots, dictator and all the rest. Cyprus is one of 43 countries worldwide that uses such a system. In reality a presidency is a lavish status symbol. It comes with the customary presidential planes, expensive limousines, palaces, holiday residences, high

That is the very reason why the political system in Cyprus needs to be changed and reformed to deal with the new challenges of the day, primarily: multiculturalism and globalization! Weather one agrees or not, EU Cyprus has signed it’s sovereignty and border control over to the EU long time ago. For better or worse, the island has now been transformed into a multicultural nation in line with the rest of Europe. There are over 300.000 foreign nationals (and growing) living in Cyprus and yet most do not share the same rights as Cypriots do and cannot cast their vote to elect a parliamentarian of their choice. The Cyprus Constitution makes sure of that. Since Cypriots are now fully-fledged EU Citizens, the Constitution should be amended and changed to protect the rights and needs of all citizens on an equal basis. The imposed 1960’s British Constitution it’s not only outdated and flawed but it is also divisive and has been the blueprint of the Cyprus conflict from the very beginning. Yet, no political party dares to deal with this matter in fear of being branded a political outcast.

profile connections and other perquisites - the present government in its great wisdom has also acquired a presidential plane recently! In a true sense, a presidential system allows those in power the ability to manipulate the voting system to notch up power, political influence and control. The first recorded presidential election was in the United States in 1788 in which George Washington was elected as President. As to why Cyprus needs a president it’s anyone’s guess; for some petty-politician the prestigious temptation is too much to ignore! While the current president’s party (socialist/communist) has lost the elections, he on the other hand can continue to negotiate with the Turkish Cypriot leadership the fate of Cyprus without the overwhelming support and backing of Parliament. His party’s policy for a solution to the Cyprus problem is based on a Bi-zonal, BiCommunal Federation being none other than a fancy term of partitioning the island into two states with a rotating presidency. In the end, it’s all about control and power. To sustain that control, parliamentary candidates were gagged by presidential command to avoid debating the Cyprus issue during election period for the benefit of “national interest” – whatever that means! All parties complied! Such behaviour goes against the grain of open democracy or the “right to inform” especially during election campaigns.

Meanwhile, citizens in Cyprus are experiencing crippling problems such as: a military occupation, unemployment (8% and rising) wage repression, bankruptcies, immigration, job security and little hope for a brighter future. Not long ago, Cyprus enjoyed zero unemployment, prosperity and a vision for a great future but all that has vanished. It has been replaced by a mood of uncertainty caused by bad government policies on the economy; a bloated public sector and social programs overwhelmed by bureaucracy. Despite its negative image and the Turkish military occupation, Cyprus has the potential of becoming the “Jewel of the Med” (Benjamin Disraeli – British Prime Minister 1804-18810 and the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield). It is a beautiful island situated in a unique geographical location with great investment opportunities in banking, financial services, exports, shipping, marinas and other positive industries. But if the nation is to leap forward, it certainly needs to get rid of the dogmatic iron ball around its neck and invest in its youth, the infrastructure, education, research & development and open up new markets. If not, EU Cyprus shall remain a divided little island dependant on the whims of tourism and forever keep wondering what has gone so badly wrong.

9

Cyprus: A divided island – shame for the humankind

T

urkey found the pretext to impose its partitionist plans against Cyprus following the coup of July 15, 1974, perpetrated against the elected government of President Makarios by the Athens military junta. On July 20, claiming to act under article 4 of the Treaty of Guarantee, the Turkish armed forces staged a full scale invasion against Cyprus. Though the invasion was in violation of all rules of international legality, including the UN Charter, Turkey proceeded to occupy the northern part of the island and empty it from its Greek inhabitants. By the end of the following year, the majority of the Turkish Cypriots living in the areas left under the control of the Republic had also made their way to the part of Cyprus occupied by the Turkish army. Thereby, the policy adopted by Ankara twenty years earlier, of partition and forcible population expulsion, had been enforced. The human cost was immense. Thousands of Greek Cypriots were killed or maimed as a result of the actions of the invading Turkish army. Moreover, till today the fate of approximately 1500 persons is not known and they are still missing. 1493 of these cases were submitted for investigation to the Committee on Missing Persons, which operates under the auspices of the United Nations. Over 36% of the Republic of Cyprus territory, representing 70% of the economic potential came under the occupation of the Turkish military. One third of the Greek Cypriots became refugees in their own country and are to this day prevented from returning to their homes by the Turkish occupation authorities. In an effort to alter the country’s demographic structure Ankara has brought into Cyprus over 160,000 colonists from Turkish Anatolia. In view of the mass emigration of Turkish Cypriots from the occupied area the total number of Turkish troops and settlers is now greater than that of the Turkish Cypriots remaining.

The United Nations have in several resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council demanded respect for the independence, unity and territorial integrity of Cyprus, the return of refugees to their homes and the withdrawal of foreign troops from the island. All of these resolutions have been consistently ignored by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership. The basis for a solution of the Cyprus Problem has been set in two High Level Agreements. Both agreements, (between President Makarios and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Denktash, in February 1977 and between President Kyprianou and Mr. Denktash in May 1979), were concluded under the auspices of the UN Secretary General and provided for a solution to the problem in accordance with UN

resolutions.

The most striking evidence of the Turkish side’s unwillingness to work for a solution in line with UN policy was given on November 15, 1983 when, in order to consolidate their hold over the occupied area, the Turkish Cypriot leadership unilaterally declared that area an independent state, by the name of “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. Despite the fact that this act has been condemned by the UN and that no country other than Turkey has recognised this illegal secessionist entity, the situation continues.

Though since 1977 several rounds of talks under UN auspices have taken place, they have produced no result, given that the Turkish side refuses to abide by UN resolutions. In January 1989 the government of Cyprus submitted “Outline Proposals for the Establishment of a Federal Republic and the Solution of the Cyprus Problem”, which were in accordance with the UN resolutions on Cyprus and the two High Level Agreements. Another demonstration of the government’s willingness to work toward a just solution of the issue was given by President Clerides’ proposals of December 17, 1993, according to which the Republic was prepared to disband the National Guard and hand over all its weapons to the custody of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus. The Turkish side continuously ignores international opinion on Cyprus and insists on pursuing a policy of legitimising the status quo it has imposed through the use of military might and which the international community deems as unacceptable. In doing so the Turkish side continues to violate the human rights of Cypriots and has thus run against judgment and opinion coming from the most authoritative international institutions. An important case, Loizidou v. Turkey, was tried in the European Court of Human Rights. In two successive judgments, the court found Turkey guilty of denying Mrs Loizidou access to her property in occupied Kyrenia and ordered the payment of damages. The same court, in a judgment on May 10, 2001, in the Fourth Interstate application of Cyprus against Turkey, found Turkey guilty of massive human rights violations in the occupied part of Cyprus.

Imagine that you are a microscope.. Imagine that you are a microscope. You focus on the small things around you, you zoom in, you observe them. You observe your neighbors argue over parking spaces, you observe the coals reach the right temperature for the meat, you observe all the things around you. You analyze them. You conclude that Neighbor A is right and Neighbor B is wrong. You conclude, with satisfied stomach, that you put the meat over the heat at just the right time. Imagine that you are a telescope, searching for things far away. Looking to confirm your beliefs about the universe. You pick up on a cloud of radiation that leads you to look further, you refine your theories, you keep looking, taking notes, refining your ideas until you find some sort of truth. We are all little scientists, looking far into the world of sub-consciousness, and close into the world of everyday living, for some answers. But, if you are a microscope, how do you observe yourself? You cannot use a microscope to observe the microscope you are using. And if you are a telescope, how can you observe the vastness of your own existence? Because you cannot use a telescope to observe the telescope you are using. It seems we are all in a bit of a pickle. Everything is between existence and nonexistence. Everything has a double nature like that. A chair is to be sat upon but cannot sit on itself. Therefore, if no one ever sat on the chair should it still be considered a chair? Since the chair has no consciousness the question is redundant, but the matter becomes terribly interesting when we turn our attention to organisms with consciousness, and my favorite of all the organisms are people. ‘Know thyself’ is the famous charge put upon us by our ancestors. Perhaps the only window of opportunity to actually know yourself is the moment you enter this world, right before the good doctor smacks you on the arse and biases you against people forever. During those few seconds perhaps you know who you are. Perhaps you were told from before, and you’re aware of it. Then you spend the rest of your life forgetting and trying to remember. There is no way of knowing yourself through yourself. Your brain cannot observe itself while it is trying to observe itself; and your eyes cannot observe your entire physical self unless you construct a 3D hologram of yourself to look at. You can only know bits and pieces. And so, are we destined to view Socrates’ charge ‘Know Thyself’ as a pipe dream? The solution, for us humans it seems, is to use each others’ microscopic and telescopic functions to provide input on ourselves. It is not the most accurate method, but it is the only one outside the metaphysical. Just by looking at another person you are providing a richness of input about the person’s existence. Everyone picks up on it whether they realize it or not. Thus, the human being is truly a social animal. The only way to ‘Know Thyself’ is to ‘Know Others’, and vice versa. Readers who may have constructed a machine that creates 3D holograms of oneself with artificial intelligence please contact me (contact details available at Beach News) so that we can buy an island, inhabit it and hang out with ourselves all day, unless we hit it off, in which case we can hang out with each other too. See? Social animals.

My Little Friend Michalis ….

I

hear a voice behind me; it is little Michalis who is seven years old, “Why are you clasping your hands on your face, uncle?” he asks. I look at his cute face and answer him in Greek, “I’m wondering what to write about” … It just so happens that I was sitting in Neromylos “Kafenio” (Coffee Shop) in Steni village with my laptop … “I went to the big goats … close to the “vrisi” (small pool) … where I looked after them while they were feeding on the grass and the trees. After that we went to visit the “baby” goats. My grandmother keeps them in a cage so that the dogs won’t bite them…. And then we took their mother to feed them … And I watched her feed them and then I patted them…” “Do you know uncle? … I milked the goat… Its milk is from nature… It’s the healthiest milk … because they eat from nature … And we use it to make halloumi and yogurt… and I also give the milk to my cat … and my cat also goes and finds mice … I saw her once with two mice in her mouth!....” “I go to the sea and I make waves and then I hit them with my hand… and I go fishing at Evretou dam … with my mum … and I caught one with a moustache and we ate it … and my friend is riding around on his motorbike all day … “ At this point I lowered my hands and asked him, “And then you came to the kafenio?” … and he quickly jumped in, “Yes I came to see all the uncles playing “tavli” (backgammon)… and cards. They play for chocolates … and sometimes the winners give me their chocolates … I have my own version of tavli you know … but no one knows how to play it … and I’m not sure what to do … I’m thinking of a way to play it against myself … “ “Sometimes … I play x-box … and I beat everybody when we are racing the cars … and I also like to play spiderman … Do you want to hear the

story of saint Theodoro? … Well, there was this creature in Steni who never allowed anyone to go past his cave … and this creature killed one hundred people! … Saint Theodoro did not know this creature… and one night he slept right by the creature’s cave … Then a girl appeared and told him “get up my son” … and she told him about the creature and that he must not be afraid … and he took his spear … and killed the monster … “ Michalis was on a roll …! … “I like this girl at school but now I won’t see her for a few months … until we go back to school in September … “, Then he began to tell me about his favourite soapie … “Atithasi Kardia” (Uncontrollable Heart) … “the policeman killed Juan’s father … and Juan married a girl that he was not in love with, Regina … but now he loves her … and he has ships with fisherman ... and they want to fight him … and they killed his mother … but she is still alive … married her sister … and …” … phew … South American Soapies… sounds like some of the local gossip! Indeed, at this point I wanted to pull my hair out (the little that I have left) because he wasn’t leaving me alone to think and write!! … Now I want to pull my hair out because I can’t remember everything he told me! … So at this point I figured it was probably well worth writing a few lines about this little village called Steni; A village which was, but a few years back, nothing more than two uninteresting streets that one drove through to get to the next village. Today it is the pride of the area. One indeed feels its charm as one enters … the stonewalls and bougainvilleas … its new “platea” (square) which surrounds if not, the most impressive folk lore museum in Cyprus … coupled with it’s kafenio, and its backdrop of orange trees and the hills of Steni Gorge … it has indeed become a set example of what passion and love of a handful of people can do … And of

course, my little friend Michalis, who told me of his day’s adventures … Initially I wanted to write about my adventures with my new friend who just moved to Cyprus… a full day’s adventure … the amazing locations we found… Coral Bay, Paphos Town, Limassol, Pissouri Village … but at the end of our trip and while writing… it was those little moments on the way that made us laugh, shrill or cry that came to mind as I wrote … The green bananas we picked in Coral Bay (for kicks of course)… the “smiles” of the dogs and cats at the Paphiakos Animal Shelter … the walk on Limassol Beach ... the Village Barber in Pissouri Village … Well, I really must mention the amazing breakfast at Tramps on tombs of the kings road… Avgoustinos pottery shop in Geroskipou where you can get your name printed and baked into the pots … and the friendly encounter at the restaurant just before St. George Island… The Cycling and talking parrots and definitely the shrills down my back when I saw the white python at the Bird and Animal Park … … and of course, though slightly inebriated, I remember getting my butt kicked in pool at 3 a.m. in Robin Hood in Bar Street … my Mexicanchilli-chicken-schwarma-with-extrayogurt at 5 a.m. from Out-of-Africa … and of course the driving lessons at 6 a.m. (for which we would get arrested if I mentioned any more) … Just another day’s adventures in Cyprus … Somewhat opportunistic and planned … definitely a lot of fun! And so, everyone’s day passes with a romanticized story of their day in Cyprus, whether in the village, in the city, born here or working here. Holidaying … or passing through …. But on this day none was more intriguing and real for me than that of my little friend Michalis. … “Uncle, must I tell you more stories and you write about them?” … Steni folk lore museum

t continues to be surprising how many folks are not aware of aromatherapy’s delightful and therapeutic benefits. It’s a regular part of every Mind, Body, Health seminar and every beauty and wellness consultation. However, in the world of wellness and beauty – aromatherapy has a special meaning. Aromatherapy is defined as the art and science of using essential oils (eo’s) to relax, balance, and stimulate the body, mind, and spirit. These aromatic concentrates are generally steam distilled from a variety of flowers, roots, leaves, wood, bark, fruit, berries, seeds, and resins – or cold pressed from the rinds of citrus fruits (think “blood” of the plant). Every oil has its own distinct aroma, and whether inhaled, massaged into the skin in diluted form, or placed in a bath the eo molecules enter into your bloodstream and offer the body hun-

dreds of powerful natural chemical constituents that stimulate an array of physical, emotional, and psychological responses. Inhaling an essential oil affects your mind, mood, and emotions. This process also releases hormones to your organs and body cells. Reactions can be calming, cooling, invigorating, and more. When applied externally, the essential oil molecules affect the body – skin, muscles, joints, and organs – by penetrating the skin, entering the dermal layer, and interacting with blood and lymph vessels, connective tissue, sebaceous and sweat glands, sensory nerves, and hair follicles. The positive effects run the gamut and include: balancing the mind-body physiology, calming the emotions, moisturizing and regenerating the skin, and acting as an anti-inflammatory for body tissues. Essential oils can also promote elimination of waste matter and regeneration of new cells.

beauty - products without chemicals T he dangerous chemicals in beauty products and how to avoid them Each day women reach for shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and moisturiser. We apply nail polish, lipstick and probably also a dab of perfume. We look good, we smell good, but we have just exposed ourselves to over 200 different chemicals and that’s before we even step out of our front doors! We’re increasingly careful about the content of the food we eat, but when it comes to the chemicals that we daily massage in to our skin, soak up in the bath, scrub our teeth and gums with or the make-up that we apply, we are very trusting. Although certain chemicals (that have been proven to be harmful to our bodies) have recently been banned from use in cosmetics, there are still some substances that have been linked to health issues and that are still widely used in products. Listed below are some of the main culprits to be avoided wherever possible: Preservatives (Parabens). Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl and Butyl parabens are the most common preservative used in skin care. Parabens have been implicated

in a number of disorders such as asthma, eczema and there is a theory that they may also be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) - traces of parabens have been found in cancer tumours. This of course, does not prove that they cause cancer, but it is worrying nevertheless. Sodium Lauryl sulphates/ sodium laureth sulphates These are f o a m i n g agents widely used in shower and bath products and also in some toothpastes. They are synthetic detergents derived from coconut oil, and can cause irritation to the eyes and skin and have been linked to asthma. Aluminium Aluminium in its various forms is widely used in lipsticks and de-

odorants and has been linked to Alzheimers disease. It is used in anti-perspirant deodorants to prevent sweating (it coats the skin, not

allowing sweat to escape). Sweating, however, is our natural way of removing toxins from the body. This is the reasoning behind the theory that it could (with long-term use) increase our chances of getting breast cancer. After all, if toxins are not allowed to escape through our sweat glands, where do they

go and what damage do they do to our bodies? We now know that the skin is permeable and literally soaks up a high percentage of whatever we directly apply to it. We also know that these substances absorb into our bloodstreams and eventually end up in the organs and glands of our bodies. This view led to the development of transdermal patches, which deliver drugs in to the body via the skin e.g. anti-smoking patches. So what can we do? With these points in mind would it not be sensible to at least limit the amounts of chemicals we use every day? After all the less we and our families breathe, eat or absorb toxic chemicals, the less chance there is that they will affect us in a negative way. Simple steps to take to limiting

synthetic chemicals in cosmetics: • Always read the labels! Manufacturers are now obliged by law to list all ingredients used in their products. • Beware of product ranges that claim to be natural, but actually are not. Often they contain a small amount of natural ingredients accompanied by larger quantities of synthetics. This again comes back to reading the labels! • Choose natural toothpastes – preferably those that contain Aloe-Vera and silica - a natural whitener. • Instead of synthetic perfume choose aromatherapy-scented body oils - which moisturise and perfume the body in one go - they tend to be preservative-free. • For the bath and shower again go for aromatherapy bath oils and bath and shower gels that contain palm extract instead of sodium lauryl sulphate. They lather up just as effectively without harmful side effects and irritation to the skin. • Choose aluminium-free deodorants. These products still allow you to sweat so may need to be reapplied throughout the day.

Past Imperfect by Julian Fellowes

Reviewed by David R. Walker a.k.a. Southboy

P

ast Imperfect is a wonderfully written tale of the last debutante season in London in the summer of 1968 centering on a group of upper class British teenagers on the brink of adulthood, most of who originated from the Landed Gentry. Julian Fellowes who wrote the brilliant screenplay and deservedly won an Oscar for best original screenplay for the 2002 film Gosforth Park, turns his attention on the changing social trends of the British upper classes and those who aspire to be a part of that exclusive yet vaguely eccentric clique of society. As the title implies the story oscillates between the past, 1968 and the present 2008 centering on a very wealthy but dying recluse Damian Baxter who requests his long last friend and now sworn enemy to assist him track down the identity of a love child that he conceived during the 1968 debutante season. This search for a prodigal heir is prompted by a note that Baxter receives from the anonymous mother of

plot in the first person, making the narrative more intimate yet allowing the author to conduct a wry and accurate social commentary on how the British upper classes have changed, evolved and reinvented themselves in the four decades from the pivotal year of 1968, a time of immense social and political upheaval in the American and European upper social echelons, when the post World War II Baby Boom generation was coming of age, grappling with a revolutionary and rapidly shifting society. the child, who could be a number of prominent society women that Damian had a scene with back in the heady days of his arrogant and charming youth. With the added benefit of hindsight each of the characters are introduced as they are now, 40 years on and as they were as teenagers during the London season, when women had debutantes balls at 18 at fashionable London hotels and men came of age at 21 often pursuing a financial career in the City. irector Duncan Jones, son of rock icon David Bowie has expanded his horizon from his debut film Moon, a sci-fi thriller starring Sam Rockwell as multiple versions of himself, stranded on a remote space ship controlled by a omniscient computer, voiced with enviable calm by Kevin Spacey to Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga, a parallel universe thriller set in the 21st century heart of America, ever threatened by eminent terrorist attacks. Unlike Moon, Source Code is grounded in reality, contemporary Chicago where a passenger train bound for the city centre is about to explode. Gyllenhaal plays US Army Helicopter pilot Captain Colter Stevens who is transported into another man’s body with only 8 minutes left to live and he must find a

way of discovering the identity of the bomber who is onboard and gets off at the station prior to the blast. Using the framework of parallel universes, quantum physics and covert government agencies, Source Code is an ingenious thriller about the effects of transporting an unwilling hero into the mind of a man eight minutes before he dies, not once but several time, opening up several different versions of a similar, yet slightly different reality. Like in Moon, the central character Colter is disconnected from the outside world not only physically but also psychologically and is being controlled by a force far greater than his own willpower. Vera Farmiga last seen in Up in the Air makes a welcome appearance on screen as the controller Goodwin, who is faced not only with the ethics of

the military experiment but the impact it will have on altering the course of the future using the deeply confused anti-hero. Colter, played by a wide eyed Gyllenhaal is predictably brilliant drawing on his previous role in Jarhead, while it is the ever surprising Jeffrey Wright as Dr Rutledge who is elegant, insidious and morally blunted by the ethical consequences of his own experiment, only recognizing the source code’s full potential. See Source Code not only for its varied scenarios of the same terrorist situation reminiscent of the hideous and very real Madrid train bombs that occurred in March 2003 but for the film’s ingenuous probing of the core dilemma of using a dying man’s functioning brain in the last moments of his conscious life.

emotionally challenging years between school and taking up a career, where most young men especially those in England were studying at Oxford or Cambridge and the young women, debutantes were being groomed by eager and beady-

eyed Lords and Ladies to land a suitable husband, complete with a title, naturally a mansion in the country and a flat in Belgravia. Past Imperfect is a light yet fascinating tale of an affluent set looking back on a youth long since forgotten, the mistakes that were made and the consequences which would haunt them for the rest of their adult lives.

Flora and Fauna of Cyprus

W

ith its approximately 1.800 species and subspecies of flowering plants, Cyprus, is an extremely interesting place for nature lovers and has all the attributes that make it a botanist’s paradise. Being an island, it is sufficiently isolated to allow the evolution of a strong endemic flowering element. At the same time being surrounded by big continents, it incorporates botanological elements of the neighbouring land masses. About 8% of the indigenous plants of the island, 125 different species and subspecies, are endemic. The island’s great variety of habitats, attributed to a varied microclimate and geology, is the main reason which contributed to this high number of endemics. The arrival of animals in Cyprus has been a subject of interest to zoologists, since it has always been an island. According to existing evidence, the first arrivals were hippopotami and elephants, both excellent swimmers. They arrived 1,5 million years ago and apart from some shrews and

mice, were the only land mammals roaming the island prior to Man’s arrival 9.000 years ago. The present-day fauna of Cyprus includes some 7 species of land mammals, 26 species of amphibians and reptiles, 357 species of birds, a great variety of insects and mites, while the coastal waters of the island give shelter to 197 fish species and various species of crabs, sponges and echinodermata. The largest wild animal that still lives on the island is the Cyprus moufflon (Ovis orientalis ophion), a rare type of wild sheep that can only be found in Cyprus. Cyprus is used by millions of birds as a stepping-stone during their migration from Europe to Africa and back, something that has been observed since Homeric times. The main reason for that is the occurrence on the island of two wetlands, with unique and international importance, namely Larnaca and Akrotiri salt lakes. From the numerous wild birds of Cyprus, birds of prey are the

Electric Cigarettes - They are your Best Bet if you want to Quit your Smoking Habit

T

oday electric cigarettes have become widely popular due to their numerous health benefits. These cigarettes are much safer than their tobacco counterparts because of two main reasons. Firstly, there is no tobacco smoke involved in these electric cigarettes and this automatically reduces its harmful effects like lung cancer or heart disease. Secondly, electric cigarettes contain refillable cartridge that contains Best E Juice which produces nicotine filled vapors and no more chemical substances.

The refillable cartridge present in the electric cigarettes contains Best E Juice which has nicotine as a main content. You can get these cartridges in many flavours like strawberry, apple or mint. As soon a use inhales from these electric cigarettes, an atomizer that is powered by the battery converts a small amount of Best E Juice into a vapour, which is inhaled by the user instead of tobacco smoke. This nicotine vapour provides nico-

tine high to the user within few seconds thereby satisfying his or her nicotine urge. These electronic cigarettes are much better alternative to tobacco cigarettes than nicotine patches or gums.

These electronic cigarettes also have an orange coloured LED at their tip that glows when the user inhales from the cigarette thereby simulating the real tobacco cigarette. You can get these nicotine cartridges with Best E Juice in various strengths as per your preference (medium, high or minimal strength). Such varying strengths of these cartridges with Best E Juice helps avid tobacco smokers in quitting their smoking habit wherein they can start with the full strength cartridge and then move on to minimal and none to finally quit their smoking habit. With these electronic cigarettes, user immediately gets the “nicotine hit” as compared to nicotine patches or gums that take lots to time. Aside from this, user of these electronic cigarettes also

gets real experience of smoking cigarettes without any harmful chemicals found in traditional tobacco smoke.

These electronic cigarettes also provide the freedom to the users to smoke them anywhere at public places like gyms, restaurants or clubs, and even on the plane. Earlier, they had to search for secluded place to satisfy their urge or have to travel huge distances to reach some place to smoke tobacco cigarettes. These electronic cigarettes are more socially acceptable too.

Aside from this, these electronic cigarettes are quite cost effective when compared to traditional cigarettes. Once single cartridge is equivalent to about 20 tobacco cigarettes and you can again and again use one cartridge once you buy your kit.

most fascinating and amongst them the Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) and the imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) are the jewel on the crown. Our sea creatures include seals and turtles, though unfortunately the Monk seal no longer breeds in the coastal sea caves of the island. On the other hand two marine turtles, the Green turtle (Chelona mydas) and the Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) have been found to breed regularly on the island’s sandy beaches and are strictly protected.

Time to end corruption in sport

Written declaration on combating corruption in European Sport The European Parliament, – having regard to the seventh indent of Article 165(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which states that Union action shall be aimed at developing the European dimension in sport, by promoting fairness and openness in sporting competitions, – having regard to Rule 123 of its Rules of Procedure, A. recognising the very important social and financial impact of European sport on citizens and enterprises in the Union, B. whereas according to the White Paper on Sport (COM(2007)0391) corruption problems with a European dimension need to be tackled at European level and the Commission will continue to monitor the implementation of EU anti-money laundering legislation in the Member States with regard to the sport sector, 1. Calls on the Commission to coordinate, together with Member States, a large-scale study on corruption incidents in European sport, consulting all relevant stakeholders; 2. Calls on the Commission and the Member States to highlight specifically links between organised crime activity and legal and illegal betting, sport agents, referees, club officials and sportsmen and women, that aim to fix the results of European sport matches in advance; 3. Calls on the Commission to regulate online betting, in the interests of the integrity and sustainable development of European sport, through licensed operators, specific measures to combat match-fixing and ensuring a fair return to grassroots sport through the recognition of a betting right to sports competition organisers; 4. Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission and the Parliaments of the Member States.

C

orruption in sport is a serious problem that should be tackled at an EU level, according to a written declaration signed by 399 MEPs. “Match fixing and illegal betting kill the very spirit of sport,” said one of the authors of the written declaration, Polish EPP member Tadeusz Zwiefka. However it is not only about fairness, but also about fixers’ connections with organised crime, he said. What MEPs want The MEPs are calling for a largescale study on corruption in European sport, focusing especially on links between organised crime and illegal betting, sport agents, referees, club officials, sportsmen. If a sports event doesn’t seem a “true and fair competition, the game itself is of no value, causes no emotion and is nothing more than a dirty business,” Mr Zwiefka said.

MEPs want the European Commission to regulate online betting in order to combat match fixing and ensure fairness in sport. Sport is an EU competence following the Lisbon Treaty. “This issue has to be tackled on the European level because the problem exists not only in one or two member states, but in many countries,” Mr Zwiefka said. “In my own country we had big problems with corruption in football. Now, with the Lisbon Treaty we can do something more about it.”

t has been nearly 2 months that I have been living in this crazy place called India, where things have to be looked upside down to make sense, as if you are in Sirsasana (headstand). I have been followed by a cow on my way to a cafe, I have hanged out with Palestinians, Americans, Chileans, Japanese, Argentineans, Mexicans, Germans, French and of course local Indians, I have been on a scooter all around town discovering Mysore’s tucked away treasures, I have eaten a whole meal for 20 rupees (35 cents) and yes I have also been sick though only for one night. For sure the first thing that demands your attention is the traffic. Especially when I landed in Bangalore, it was a complete invasion of the senses. Mysore, and more specifically Gokulam, where I am based, is not as hectic and manic as Bangalore and with a mere population of just under 1million it is a far cry from the traffic in Bangalore or Delhi. It took about a week to start making sense of how the roads work here and quite simply Indians do not rely on machines

telling them where to go or what to do, they quite simply use common sense when driving. Yes, at first it looks like a complete chaos but look closely and there is a magical flow in the traffic that just makes sense. People use their horns an insane amount of times compared to the west but alas! There is a difference to how we use it in the West. In the Mediterranean for example when someone beeps their horn at another car the mentality that tends to prevail is from the second person’s view “Are you beeping at me? ARE-YOU-BEEPING-AT-ME?” (Oh the perils of our Ego). And in return there is the high likelihood that no, the person will not move even if you beeped at them, maybe they will even cut your flow by getting in your way and then in your hot blooded turn you will give them the middle finger and your eyebrows will be frowning for the next 2-3 hours until you regurgitate the event several times to friends and family. In India when people beep it is literally like learning to speak another language. People actually move, no one frowns, no one swears, and

One tip, if you are walking on the side of the road try to keep your hands close to your body, you move them as you are describing a story to a friend you will likely hit a motorist or lose your arm by a bus. I have witnessed a father sit on his bike with his 5yr old daughter in front of him, his younger son behind him and his wife holding their newborn, sit with her gorgeous pink saree sideways; and the baby is fast asleep in her arms. The sheer grace (yes I mean grace not craze) took my breath away. No one bats an eyelid, no one frowns, no one looks stressed...in the slightest! When I was talking about this with a friend in Cyprus she goes to me “But what if this happened/But what if that happened?” and I pointed out that that is exactly the mentality that does not exist in India, no “what ifs” otherwise that mother would definitely not be sitting on that motorbike with her newborn baby asleep in her arms, and this is around ALL THE TIME! Everywhere! There is a deep seated trust in something greater whatever that may be and

their general day to day function is a far cry from the Western daily stresses where often our “trust and faith” goes in tangible, material things. And accidents here are far in between, again a far cry from the risks of Cyprus roads. Which brings me to the issue of babies; in the 2 months I have been here I have not heard babies cry... anywhere! I have brought this up with numerous Westerners, a lot of whom have travelled extensively around Asia, and who have also confirmed my observation. The babies are super chilled and rarely are parents seen catering to their infant Egos by over the top attention. Babies here are so chilled out that Gandhi himself would be envious.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is not about how the East is better than the West, for example I have found that in India people litter a lot and spit a lot (though not very different than the West right?). Next time I will talk about my experience of having passport size pictures taken (compared to the West), going to restaurants and trying to order, the animals in the streets, being sick and my Yoga practice at the world famous Ashtanga school of KPJAYI. Entertainment and showbiz Playing for Change The Inspiration

P

laying for Change is a multimedia music project created by the American producer and

sound engineer Mark Johnson with his Timeless Media Group, that seeks to bring together mu-

sicians from around the world. Playing For Change also created a separate non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation which builds music schools for children around the world. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. The Production With a mobile recording studio, equipped with all the same equip-

ment used in the best studios, the founders traveled to wherever the music would take them. As technology changed, their power demands were downsized from golf cart batteries to car batteries, and finally to laptops. Similarly, the quality with which they were able to film and document the project was gradually upgraded from a variety of formats, finally to full HD.

One thing that never changed throughout the process was the commitment to create an environment for the musicians in which they could create freely and that placed no barriers between them and those who would eventually experience their music. By leading with that energy and intent everywhere they traveled, they were freely given access to musicians and locations that are usually inaccessible. The Effect Over the course of this project, the founders decided it was not enough for their crew just to record and share this music with the world; they wanted to create a way to give back to the musicians and their communities that

had shared so much with them. And so in 2007 they created the Playing for Change Foundation, a separate nonprofit corporation whose mission is to do just that. Now, musicians from all over the world are brought together to perform benefit concerts that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope. Aries: You have vibrant health this month with the Sun and Mars in your 6th house of Health and Employment. You could gain some huge personal satisfaction for your job as well. You will also be supported by the committed other in your life in these endeavours. You will however, have to mind closely what you say this month, especially around the 22nd, when you could step in it up to your knee. The sun changes sign into Libra on the 21st, the Equinox and the first day of Fall, and your attention will be drawn to that committed other. You will probably want to spend as much time as possible with this person as you reap the seeds of love planted back in the spring. Taurus: Romance is all over you this month with the Sun and Mars in your 5th house of Romance and Creativity. You’ll be feeling very sexy with that Mars influence. Just be careful it doesn’t get out of control around the 22nd. An interest on the job could sweep you off your feet on the 4th, but it can fall apart just as quickly. And, then again… With Saturn in you 2nd house of Money and Values, be careful about over spending with regards to these romantic inclinations. The Sun moves into your 6th house of Health and Employment on the 21st and you will feel the pull to improve your health or your job, or both. With Mercury there all month you should have a clear plan in mind for accomplishing these plans. Gemini: With the Sun and Mars in your 4th house of Home, you may feel the need for redecorating. This could be a sword that cuts both ways this month. Pluto, the planet of rebirth, isn’t all that happy with your plans and could work against you on the 7th and the 22nd. On the 22nd when you may feel completely frustrated with yourself. This is coming from the planet Saturn, the Restrictor, placed firmly in your 1st house of Self. Think things through carefully before beginning.
The Sun changes signs into Libra on the 21st, providing you with new romantic opportunities during the last week of the month. Anything started during that time will find ample support next month. Lucky you. Cancer: With the Sun and Mars in your 3rd house of Communication and Short Trips, you’ll be the busy little beaver this month running here and there and talking all the time. Endless chatter. Careful around the 7th as something you say on the job could get you into hot water. Be especially careful on the 22nd, as taking your eyes from the road for just a moment could result in an accident. After the Sun changes signs into Libra on the 21st, you will find you are drawn to the home front more than usual. You could feel the urge to change or add something to your living space. Neptune and Uranus in your 8th house of Shared Resources supports you in any change you with to make, especially if it’s eclectic and artsy. Leo: You’re a busy person this month with the Sun and Mars in your 2nd house of Money and Values. They may be up for review at this time and you could find yourself in a bit of a re-vamping mood. This could cause problems on the 7th and 22nd as people around you may react with resistance to those changes. Just keep your cool and remember that Mercury in your 3rd house of Communication this month helps you to express your aims and reasons effectively. After the 21st the Sun changes signs into Libra, to further assist in expressing yourself. Jupiter entered your 1st house of Self last month and I again caution you about over eating and over indulging. Also, try to avoid becoming over inflated with yourself. This influence lasts a year. Virgo: This month you are enlivened by the Sun and Mars in your 1st house

of Self. You will be filled with energy. Your mind will probably be on money matters and how to accumulate more through your employment. There could be some surprises in that category as well. The caution is not to overextend yourself and cause health problems, as current planetary configurations indicate they might be difficult to diagnose and treat. When the Sun changes signs into Libra, your 2nd house of Money and Values on the 21st, the money focus is re-doubled. You may find you have more in resources than you had counted on.
Libra: With the Sun in your 12th house of “behind the scenes” activity, you may choose to sit back and relax. Time to reflect on the past year. Having Mars there as well could mean your energy level is truly at low tide. Your ruling planet Venus is in your 1st house of Self and this could draw romance to you. With Uranus and Neptune in your 5th house of Romance the chances are even greater. Jupiter throws a dreamy light on it all from the 11th house of Hopes and Wishes for a very pleasant time for you. The energy starts to return when the Sun crosses into Libra around the 21st. There is something of a warning here, the Sun combines with Mercury and you many lose sight of your identity for the day on the 28th. Scorpio: July should be a very happy time for you. The Sun and Mars are in your 11th house of Hopes and Wishes firing the imagination with thoughts of the future and the possibilities it could bring. Look for surprises around the home front this month. They could really be great. Your career also will be getting a major boost for

By the last week of July, you may feel you energy level slipping and you feel the urge to retreat from life for a time. However, with Venus slipping into your 1st house of Self don’t be surprised to find a romantic interest or two hovering about.
Sagittarius: The career sector of your chart is ablaze this month. The Sun and Mars, both fire planets, light up the fireworks in your 10th house of Career for a great time and a time for real advancement. Your mind is going with the possibilities for the future with Mercury and Venus planted firmly in the house of Hopes and Wishes. With Saturn in last degrees of the 7th house of partnerships, relationship issues will probably be a major motivating force for the next year. The Sun moves into your 11th house of Hopes and Wishes after the 21st to help get you focused on what you want in life for the next year. Lay down some constructive planning and make a road map to achieve these goals. Capricorn: If you are looking for that vacation, now is the time. Pack those bags and don’t look back. Plan well, so that after the 14th you make it home without incident. More than likely, the call to return will come for obligations in the employment/career area. This will be a time for you to shine especially after the 21st, when the Sun enters you house of career. Also, watch those purse strings this month. With Uranus, the planet of surprises good and bad, in your 2nd house of Money and Values, along with Neptune, the deceiver, you could have a jolt or two where money is concerned. With influences from Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, I’ll wager they will be to your benefit. Aquarius: Have you been watching the family budget? If you haven’t, you will. It will be your key focus this month, but not in a burdensome way. You may surprise yourself at your own creativity when it comes to juggling the checkbook and financial responsibilities this month. Jupiter in your 7th house of committed relationships urges your partner to assist in these matters. Look for that help to continue for the next year. After the 21st, the Sun moves into your 9th house of long distance travel and higher thinking. If it doesn’t get you out on the road, it will get you traveling in your mind. Either way, it promotes a pleasant learning experience. So take the trip, you’ll love it.
Pisces: The Sun and Mars occupy your 7th house of committed relationships this month and you will have ample energy in that area. Problems or old grievances could surface and you will have to deal with them. You’ll do just fine if you keep your head. Venus and Mercury in your 8th house of shared finances bode well for the month. Just don’t go on a spending spree around the 23rd. With the Sun moving into that house you may feel you have enough to spend without regard, only to find out later, you didn’t. Also after the Sun changes signs into Libra, expect old problems with your living space to find workable solutions.
