Shake off the winter doldrums with a good, flavorful spring beer. While winter beers tend to be heavier and full of seasonal flavors such as cinnamon, cloves, and honey, spring beers are of a lighter flavor. Literally. Look to your spring beer to be lighter in color, crisp and refreshing, and of a clear or cloudy consistency. Many spring beers have hints of citrus in them. “When the winds shift we go from wanting a heavy malty beer to wanting a refreshing beer,” said Doug Maffucci, co-owner of Atlantic Brewing in Bar Harbor. Maffucci owns the brewery with his wife Barbara. Think of it like enjoying the taste of new beginnings, Maffucci said. That’s because brewers start their “spring beers” in the winter. So while dark, flavorful beers predominate the winter months (you know, to keep us warm), it’s lighter beers that help pull drinkers back onto their decks. “The [spring and summer beer] style has always been lighter body but

still high gravity,” Maffucci said. Less carbonation also marks a spring beer, he said. “It’s the kind of beer you’d enjoy as part of a meal instead of just as a refreshing beverage on the boat.” Some traditional styles of beers are prevalent in spring: Bock, Doppelbock and Maibock. Bock beers are bottom fermenting lagers that require extra fermenting time and which require cold storage to properly finish with a smooth taste. Bock beers also tend to be slightly darker in color, varying from dark amber to brown and are marked with a light hoppiness. The Bock styles may date back as far as the medieval days where German monasteries would brew stronger beer for sustenance during Lent. Others in the beer community point to old world influence dictating that beer should only be brewed during the sign of the Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Regardless of its heritage, bock beers mark the return of better times and warmer weather. And we can all be happy for that. So raise your glass of ale or bock high and toast to spring.

MALLETT BROTHERS BAND TO LIGHT UP THE GARDEN SHOW “One of the most popular and talked-about bands in Maine in some years. Bringing its infectious, unique brand of musical energy to the Garden Show & Spring Fling is alternative country/ rock group The Mallett Brothers Band, which the Portland Press Herald in 2010 called “an authentic, rip-roarin’ alt-country band,” and which Portlandbased Dispatch Magazine recently called “a six-piece living inferno.” It will be a return to the Bangor area for the band, which has played the KahBang festival, one of the KahBang art series shows, and the West Market Festival. “It’s always nice to get back the area,” said Will Mallett who, along with his brother Luke, is from these parts. “We’re excited to get up there… We’re definitely honored to be part of the whole thing.” If there’s any way to classify just what the band’s sound is, good luck trying; it’s definitely its own sound. Show-goers can expect fast guitars, some bluegrass energy, and what Mallett calls “an oldfashioned rock and roll show.” “We always say our fan base stretches from 5 years old to 100 years old, because we’ll have a lot of older people in the crowds, and we can get the kids dancing,” he said. “We definitely seem to have a pretty broad appeal.” Mallett and his brother Luke come from a folk-music background, of course, with their father, David Mallett, a legendary Maine folk singer. That influence shows in their lyrics, but their musical style is all their own. Along with the folk music, the brothers spent 10 years in Tennessee as kids, so there are definite country, bluegrass, and Southern rock infusions. But the rest of the band is firmly steeped in classicrock styles. Whatever the magic formula is, it’s definitely working for the band. “[I’m] extremely excited and humbled

and honored by the fact that people seem to enjoy what we’re doing everywhere we go,” Mallett said. “We’re still a long way from driving fancy cars and stuff like that, but we get to travel around the country and do what we love to do. For 10 years, Central Maine Stoneworks has done landscaping and hardscape construction, specializing in patios and walkways constructed of fieldstone, granite, and slate, and producing copper and stone sculptures and stone water features — and provide overall lawn maintenance. Owner Silas Wilbur has been at previous garden shows at the auditorium before, and “It generally works out pretty good,” he said. Wilbur says his exhibition will focus on a laid-back, low-maintenance garden — with, of course plenty of stone. “We specialize in natural stone and walls and patios,” Wilbur said. “It will be a different variety of stone and some sculptures and stuff like that.” Despite its name, the company isn’t limited to Central Maine. “We spent three months last year up on the Canadian border in Van Buren,” Wilbur said, noting he’s done jobs in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Cozy Acre Greenhouse, located in North Yarmouth and owned by Jeff Marstaller, has been in business for 24 years. As a wholesaler supplier of annuals, vegetables and herbs to Maine garden centers and landscapers, this is Marstaller’s second trip to the Bangor Garden Show. Their landscape exhibit will welcome visitors to the show to explore a Maine trail and garden.
“[We decided] to build a trail framed by bent twig fencing that [will] lead the gardener through shade loving plants finally arriving at a sunny gazebo made from Maine Dri Ki (driftwood) that is surrounded with lots of flower color,” Marstaller said. “Amongst the plants will be animals, created by a chainsaw-happy Maine artisan.” The landscape exhibit, he said, reflects a whimsical approach that can be easily duplicated by gardeners and includes items easily obtained in Maine. Maine stone and granite along with reclaimed stone and granite are the heart of Flagstones, a Guilford hardscaping company. Owned by Harvey Wilbur, the business can “build anything out of natural stone.” That includes intricate staircases, walkways, and patios among other environmental accents. This year’s entry will put his stonework experience to the test, creating a display that features the stony medium. “At Flagstones, we feel that no matter what you want us to do — from steps to a patio — should have artistic flair,” Wilbur said. “We can set it in stone.” As as Garden Show veteran, Flagstones will once again use stone to accent a creative landscape. Wilbur hinted the display may include a stone sailboat. Past visitors will recall the display with a granite train. The show is also an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues while inspiring visitors. “We’re a bunch of friends getting together to do an exhibition [while] working together to put on the best possible show,” he said. Deck specialist Alvin Smith says the Bangor Garden Show is one of the first highlights of spring. Smith owns Hickory Dickory Decks, a 10 year old business located at 1555 Hammond Street in Bangor. The annual show will afford Smith and his team with the opportunity to share their vision for what a deck can afford its owner. “Decks can change the way we live in our houses,” Smith said. “We love being able to help people change the way they live their lives.” While everyone’s version of “Our Maine Life” differs, he said, the Hickory Dickory Decks version will feature their ideal cottage lifestyle. That includes waterfront views, flowers, and, of course, decks and outdoor living space. “All decks are a direct reflection of the customer,” he said. For Bangor landscaper Joe Ladd, “Our Maine Life” harkens to quiet days on the Belgrade lakes where he grew up, surrounded by nature. So it’s not surprising that his landscape display will utilize that theme and take it to the next level. This year’s Garden Show is Ladd’s first solo competition. As a University of Maine graduate, Ladd has been to the Garden Show before as part of the UMaine team. This year, he’s excited to show visitors to the show what he can do.
“I loved it and had a lot of fun,” Ladd said. “It’s an amazing challenge to put it together in just a couple of days. I’m a fresh face with new ideas and things to offer.” Ladd’s business has been offering landscape design, hardscape and softscape services, and maintenance services to clients in the “bedroom communities of Bangor” and some Downeast. As a first time participant in the Bangor Garden Show, Mainely Hardscapes owner Corey Thibodeau is looking forward to showing off what his business can do. Thibodeau’s business, located on Western Ave. in Hampden, has been operational since 2007 and specializes in custom and unique hardscapes, fireplaces, and water features. “Mainely Hardscapes’ view of life here in Maine consists of family gatherings, relaxation, and natural beauty,” Thibodeau said. “Our goal for this year’s show is to create a cozy setting where one may enjoy the company of family and friends while mesmerized by the sight, sounds, and smells of a dancing campfire on a cool summer evening.” Using imagination, Maine-sourced products, and experience, Thibodeau promises the exhibit will be “a custom, hand-crafted work of art that is not only functional, but will stand the test of time.” In addition to the challenge of creating the landscape design, Thibodeau is looking forward to meeting visitors and other participants. “Mainely Hardscapes is looking forward to joining our peers while interacting with the thousands of

One of the Garden Show’s first landscapers is back to compete. NewLand Nursery & Landscaping, owned by Steve Elliot, offers a retail nursery, full-service florist, landscape design and construction, and landscape maintenance. “The number one thing that we pride ourselves on is the vision to be able to walk onto a site and see potential,” Elliot said. “We listen to our clients, get the information on what they are looking for and then we create the design that fulfills [their vision.]” And what does “Our Maine Life”
mean to Elliot? “It’s where we go to relax and get away from the hubbub of daily life,” he said. “We will be projecting a more ‘native Maine’ exhibit with less gardening and gardens. There will still be some color. We are detail oriented and we want you to feel as though you are in the Maine woods and at camp.” The challenge of designing for the Garden Show is one that Elliot knows well. “You have to build it 15 times in your mind to make sure there’s not one error,” he said. “It’s like putting on a theater production. You prepare and then the curtain comes up and you have to be ready.” And Elliot and his team are ready for opening night: Friday, April 5. A perennial participant in the Bangor Garden Show, the University of Maine’s Environmental Horticulture students are poised to sow creative seeds at this year’s show. Advised by Stephanie Burnett, the Garden Show is a yearly project allowing students to demonstrate design creativity while gaining hands-on
experience from the preliminary plans to the installation of the last shrub. “Students work on garden design, collecting the plant material needed, and constructing the final exhibit itself,” Burnett said. The design, she noted, also allows students to hone their landscaping techniques. The display will have a natural wall, a sustainable retention pond, and leaving trees commonly found in Maine backyards. “[We want to] show your average gardener how to improve their own lawn without having to remove existing trees,” she said. UMaine’s “Our Maine Life” can be summed up simply: It’s what your back yard could be. Visitors will notice annuals, perennials, and interesting landscaping techniques to pique interest and encourage flow. “The back yard is being utilized as a space that is serene and beautiful as you take in the water feature as well as various evergreens and mainly native plants,” she said.

Stonington), a Maine island accessible only by boat is a unique way to gather the family for some quality time. Eastern Maine 1. Give a hoot. The Birdsacre Sanctuary, located at 289 Main Street in Ellsworth, houses the Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition to nature trails, rescued birds, and a nature center, Birdsacre is a good place to enjoy nature while also learning about Maine’s wildlife. And don’t forget the camera!
