Hello Berwyn!
W
ow, what a great year for Berwyn! As the President of the Board of Directors of the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), I am proud to report that this year has been very successful for Berwyn, and specifically, for the BDC. Working with our public and private partners, we see a full spectrum of indicators that show the BDC's award winning work successfully transforming Berwyn into a preferred destination for new businesses and consumers alike.
During the past year, the BDC was fortunate to join the Mayor and other local officials as we officially welcomed eleven new businesses to Berwyn. Many of these new businesses are owned and operated by individuals who also live in Berwyn. We also welcomed Starbucks, an international store with locations in over 65 countries. The new Starbucks is the first major tenant of our Berwyn Gateway Plaza Phase II development located on the northeast corner of Harlem and Cermak. As the BDC and its Board Members are always very proud to participate in ribbon cuttings, this particular event was significant for many reasons. Foremost, this grand opening represented the culmination of years of hard work by our
public and private partners and the coordination that goes into a major development. Working in concert to transform this major intersection is the purest definition of community development. Secondly, and more importantly, these ribbon cuttings represent a continued investment into our fine city. They also speak directly to the vitality and vibrancy of Berwyn. Whether they are a national brand store or a fine locally owned offering, we look forward to our next ribbon cutting as these new businesses are what makes Berwyn so unique. As we wind down this year and get ready to march into 2016, I’d like to thank all in Berwyn who’ve been responsible for the success we’ve garnered. I’d especially like to thank our Board of Directors as they give tirelessly to Berwyn. Undoubtedly, the new-year will bring new challenges and opportunities. I’m very confident that the BDC and Berwyn will continue to shine as an excellent choice for a new business or a family to call home. Mal Montoya

his is the first store to open in the second phase of the Berwyn Gateway Plaza project. The first phase brought the City of Berwyn six new national tenants, including Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Verizon Wireless, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Play N Trade and The Vitamin Shoppe. The second phase promises more quality tenants to go along with Starbucks, including Noodles & Company, Blaze Pizza, Betty’s Bistro and Fifth Third Bank. A total of over 18,000 square feet is being added in this second phase. Starbucks Coffee is an American coffee company and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington. It is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 22,766 stores in 65 countries and territories. Starbucks locations serve hot and cold beverages, whole-bean coffee, microground instant coffee, espresso, caffe latte, full-leaf teas, pastries and snacks. Most stores also sell pre-packaged food items, hot and cold sandwiches and items such as mugs and tumblers.

Torres Fresh Market now open in Berwyn Located on the northeast corner of 26th Street and Harvey Avenue, Torres Fresh Market opened in September providing east Berwyn with a much needed quality grocery store. Torres Fresh Market spans approximately 16,000 square feet and has an adjacent dedicated parking lot. 31st Annual Charles E. Piper Award Honoring Nora Laureto
Among Nora’s fondest memories was orchestrating the relocation of the “Lincoln, the Friendly Neighbor” statue from the former Land of Lincoln Bank on Riverside Drive to the entrance of Lincoln Middle School on 16th Street. After passing a referendum to expand Lincoln Middle School, Nora had the idea to enhance the school’s campus with public

AHIMSA YOGA STUDIO Ahimsa Yoga Studio was recently approved to receive TIF funding. Assistance will be applied to interior build-out and signage improvements for the new 1,000 sq. ft. space in the Depot District. This workshop will feature guest speakers on topics such as the importance of bilingualism in today’s society, reading and mathematical support for students and parents, nutrition, special needs, finances, and cyberbullying. Childcare will be available. This event will emphasize the importance of preparing our students in our community as they continue their studies toward higher education and beyond. We are proud to announce our Illinois Safe Schools Alliance “Ally of the Year” award for creating safe and inclusive schools. The AP Program recognizes high school students who demonstrate outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the AP Scholar recognition. Over 50% of the class of 2015 challenged themselves by taking an AP Course. Those who pass an AP exam are eligible for college credit at Illinois public colleges and at most universities across the nation. Recently, Illinois law HB 3428, was signed. It requires public state colleges and universities to award course credit to students that score a 3 or higher on an AP exam. Many Morton students will benefit. David Rose, Margaret Frigo, Donita Ries, Lisa Dure, and Jill Obermaier. morton.edu MORTON COLLEGE MC Student Wins Spot at National Science Foundation Summer Program.This summer, Karina Bahena completed the National Science Foundation Research Experience at Purdue University—Calumet. “The College couldn’t be prouder of Bahena’s accomplishment,” said Interim President Muddassir Siddiqi. She participated in a nine-week paid internship on wireless communication research. For Bahena, the experience introduced her to a variety of different computer science and electrical engineering faculty and gave her the opportunity to collaborate on a research paper that will soon be submitted for publication. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to do original research at the end of my second year of college. Proof of Berwyn residency (valid photo ID) and cash payment are required at the time of service. The cost of the quadrivalent vaccine is $20, and the high dose vaccine is $35. There is no cost for Berwyn seniors who present their Medicare B card (primary insurance) along with their valid photo ID. Berwyn children 18 years old and younger who meet eligibility requirements may also receive free flu vaccine. Free vaccine from Cook County Department of Public Health will be available until our supply runs out.
