History In 1929, only briar patches covered a 175-foot hill located on the western outskirts of Sioux City, Iowa. But two people – Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke, Major Superior of the Sisters of Saint Francis, and the Most Reverend Edmond Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese – had a vision. They saw that hill crowned with a Catholic college for women. Mother Dominica and Bishop Heelan met on March 9, 1929 with members of the Sioux City community. Businessmen attending that meeting committed themselves to raising $25,000 to support the establishment of the college in Sioux City. After this showing of community support, significant events followed in rapid succession. On Sept. 18, 1930, the college, named Briar Cliff after the hill on which it is located, was dedicated. Four days later, 25 women started classes in Heelan Hall, the only building on campus. In 1937, the University’s two-year program was extended to four years. Fifty-five men were admitted to Briar Cliff in 1965 and co-education was formalized in 1966 with the admission of 150 full-time male students. The innovative Weekend College program started in the fall of 1979. The spring of 1980 saw the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A Master of Arts in Education was implemented in the summer of 2001. The college officially became a University on June 1, 2001. The University’s academic growth required an expanding physical plant. As time passed, more buildings began sprouting from the briar-covered hill: a four-story addition to Heelan Hall in 1948; the library and Our Lady of Grace Chapel in 1959; Alverno Hall, a women’s residence, in 1965; a gymnasium in 1966; Toller Hall, a men’s residence, in 1967; Noonan Hall in 1968; the Newman Flanagan Center in 1982; the addition of three classrooms in the theatre in 1986; the completion in 1988 of the Baxter-DiGiovanni Living & Learning Center; KLIF-AM campus radio station in 1987; and the renovated dining hall in 1989. The $6 million, 43,350-square-foot Stark Student Center opened in the fall of 2000. Additionally, extensive renovations to Alverno Residence Hall have expanded Briar Cliff’s recreational facilities. The construction of the McCoy Arnold Center, completed in 2004, further enhanced recreational facilities. On Sept. 1, 2011, Briar Cliff formally broke ground for a $10.75 million addition and renovation of Heelan Hall, slated for completion in September 2013. The project will involve the addition of a three-floor wing with state-of-the-art science laboratories, a business case room, general classrooms and a four-story atrium. The Heelan Hall project will include new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems along with renovation of various classrooms and labs in the existing structure.

BRIAR CLIFF MEN’S SOCCER The 2012 Chargers are an experienced group. They return five of their top six point producers from a year ago, including seniors Chase Beiermann and Joe Greer. Beiermann was an honorable mention all-conference selection a year ago after scoring three goals and handing out a team-high four assists. Greer finished the 2011 season with three goals and three assists. Also returning for the Chargers is sophomore forward Anthony Benitez, who led the Chargers in his first year in the program with five goals and 12 points. Junior midfielder Dominic Wetzbarger also returns after totaling three goals and two assists as does senior midfielder Parker Staroscik, who had one goal and one assist. Big things are also expected from senior Andrew Knowles and junior Ian Medeiros. Defensively, the Chargers are expected to be led by senior Bill Kurtenbach, an honorable mention all-league choice, last year. The Chargers held their opponents to an average of 1.71 goals per game in 2011 and had four shutouts. Returners expected to join Kurtenbach in the back could be senior Mark Samuelson and sophomore Jesus Sanchez. Dan Snider is the Chargers’ only goalkeeper with game experience. The sophomore saw action in two games last season and made seven saves. Sophomore goalkeepers Jesse Kuehler and Brett Thomas could also push for time. While the Chargers have a lot of experience on their roster, several newcomers could work their way onto the field earlier rather than later. Expected to compete for early season minutes are junior transfer Nick Berger and freshmen Drew Nick and Daniel Gutierez. In 2012, the Chargers are looking to improve on a 7-9-1 record a season ago and also return to the GPAC Postseason Tournament. Their voyage will begin, Sept. 1, at Avila. On the weekend of Sept. 8-9, the Chargers will play their home-openers against McPherson and Kansas Wesleyan.

BRIAR CLIFF WOMEN’S SOCCER A year ago, the Briar Cliff women’s soccer qualified for the GPAC Postseason Tournament. This year, the Chargers are looking to improve on their 6-12-1 record and their first postseason appearance during the Pat Herbst era. The Chargers return a dozen letterwinners off of last year’s team, paced by leading scorers Liz Crimmins and Sadelle Schultz. Crimmins, a senior, scored four goals last season, including a team-high two gamewinners. Schultz, a junior, was an honorable mention all-GPAC choice and the Chargers’ leading point producer a year ago with 16 points coming from four goals and a team-high eight assists. Offensively, the team also returns sophomore Bridget Lyons, who had three goals and two assists in her first year with the program. Lyons will play primarily in the midfield this season after splitting time between midfield and defense in 2011. Defensively, much of last year’s unit remains intact. Sophomore goalkeeper Kalynn Sortino returns for her second season as the Chargers’ starting netminder. Sortino made 170 saves last season and produced a goals against average of 2.08. Expected to playing in front of Sortino are senior Emily Campbell, junior Emily Ireland, sophomore Shelly Erickson and junior Breann Hansen. Sortino and Erickson each earned honorable mention all-conference honors a year ago. “I expect our defense to be pretty strong this year,” said Herbst. “Our offense should be improved over last year, but we will see how quickly we come together as a unit.” A strong recruiting class has given the Chargers the most across the board depth that the program has had in the last four years, especially on defense, where the Chargers are deep on returners. Several newcomers are expected to make immediate contributions, including scoring threats such as Dani Intfen and McKayla Wessling. Others freshman expected to see the field early and often are defenders Brooke Romer and Danielle Russell and midfielder/defender Kristina Mitchell. The team also picked up junior Julie Redus, who spent two seasons with the Charger volleyball team before switching over to soccer. The Chargers are scheduled to open the season, Sept. 1, at Avila. Their home-openers will be weekend of Sept. 8-9, against McPherson and Kansas Wesleyan. The GPAC Tournament will run from Oct. 30 to Nov. 8 and the Chargers are focused on not only getting there, but getting past the opening round.
