History In 1929, only briar patches covered a 175-foot hill located on the western outskirts of Sioux City, Iowa. But two people – Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke, Major Superior of the Sisters of Saint Francis, and the Most Reverend Edmond Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese – had a vision. They saw that hill crowned with a Catholic college for women. Mother Dominica and Bishop Heelan met on March 9, 1929 with members of the Sioux City community. Businessmen attending that meeting committed themselves to raising $25,000 to support the establishment of the college in Sioux City. After this showing of community support, significant events followed in rapid succession. On Sept. 18, 1930, the college, named Briar Cliff after the hill on which it is located, was dedicated. Four days later, 25 women started classes in Heelan Hall, the only building on campus. In 1937, the University’s two-year program was extended to four years. Fifty-five men were admitted to Briar Cliff in 1965 and co-education was formalized in 1966 with the admission of 150 full-time male students. The innovative Weekend College program started in the fall of 1979. The spring of 1980 saw the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A Master of Arts in Education was implemented in the summer of 2001. The college officially became a University on June 1, 2001. The University’s academic growth required an expanding physical plant. As time passed, more buildings began sprouting from the briar-covered hill: a four-story addition to Heelan Hall in 1948; the library and Our Lady of Grace Chapel in 1959; Alverno Hall, a women’s residence, in 1965; a gymnasium in 1966; Toller Hall, a men’s residence, in 1967; Noonan Hall in 1968; the Newman Flanagan Center in 1982; the addition of three classrooms in the theatre in 1986; the completion in 1988 of the Baxter-DiGiovanni Living & Learning Center; KLIF-AM campus radio station in 1987; and the renovated dining hall in 1989. The $6 million, 43,350-square-foot Stark Student Center opened in the fall of 2000. Additionally, extensive renovations to Alverno Residence Hall have expanded Briar Cliff’s recreational facilities. The construction of the McCoy Arnold Center, completed in 2004, further enhanced recreational facilities. On Sept. 1, 2011, Briar Cliff formally broke ground for a $10.75 million addition and renovation of Heelan Hall, slated for completion in September 2013. The project will involve the addition of a three-floor wing with state-of-the-art science laboratories, a business case room, general classrooms and a four-story atrium. The Heelan Hall project will include new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems along with renovation of various classrooms and labs in the existing structure.

Location

Briar Cliff University is located on a scenic hilltop campus at the edge of urban development, yet minutes from Downtown Sioux City (population 83,000). In a tri-state area where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet, Sioux City is connected with other metro areas by Interstate Highway 29 and is about an hour away by air from Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and Denver.

Briar Cliff offers over 40 academic majors and pre-professional programs. The Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Social Work degrees are conferred. Two-year Associate of Arts degrees are also available in two areas. The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management, Master of Science in Nursing and Graduate Management Certificate are also conferred. The academic year consists of two semesters with January and May terms.

The Briar Cliff men’s basketball team is looking to make the NAIA Div. II National Basketball Championship for the third-straight year. The Chargers are coming off a 22-11 campaign a season ago which ended with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. In the GPAC, the Chargers finished third with a 14-6 record. From that Sweet Sixteen team, the Chargers of second year head coach Nic Nelson return eight players, headlined by first team all-conference senior guards Jake Shipley and Taylor Murren. The 6-8 Shipley was named the GPAC Player of the Year and a first team all-American last season after averaging 17.5 ppg with 69 three-pointers and a team-high 5.0 rpg. He was second on the team with 56 assists and 37 steals. Murren, 6-1, knocked down a team-high 80 three-pointers and averaged 11.9 ppg. Shipley and Murren are two of the team’s five seniors who will be expected to lead this year’s team. The team also returned 6-10 senior honorable mention all-conference center Michael Collison and 6-6 senior forward John Engler. Collison averaged 6.7 ppg last season with 4.7 rpg. He led the league for the second-straight year with 64 blocked shots. Engler chipped in 4.3 ppg and 4.4 rpg last season, playing primarily a reserve role. Several players are expected to see their roles increase this season including Zach Otting, who averaged 4.7 ppg last season in 22 appearances, Turner Fahey, who averaged 3.7 ppg in 18 games, Ricky Torres, who chipped in 1.4 ppg in 19 games and Matt Berg, who averaged 1.3 ppg in six contests. Otting will push for time on the wing, while Fahey, who is coming off a knee injury which shortened his freshman campaign, is expected to be in hunt for the team’s starting point guard spot with Hollamon and MiraCosta Community College (Oceanside, Calif.) transfer Evan Watkins. Torres and Berg are expected to give the Chargers depth inside. Several newcomers are expected to provide an impact this season, including Watkins and a five pack of first team all-state freshmen; Clay Harreld, Austin Homan, Michael Newton, Adam Paulsen and Kale Wietfeld. The Chargers will play Northern Iowa in an exhibition game, Oct. 27 and will then open their regular season, at home, Nov. 2, against Grand View.

NIC NELSON

Nic Nelson is in his second year as Briar Cliff’s head men’s basketball coach. In his first year at the helm, Nelson guided the Chargers to a Sweet Sixteen finish at the NAIA Div. II National Championship. It was the farthest the Blue and Gold have advanced on the national stage since a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2000. Over the past four years, Briar Cliff holds the honor of being the winningest men’s basketball program, in all divisions, in the state of Iowa. Prior to becoming the Chargers’ head coach, Nelson spent four years as the program’s top assistant. In those four seasons, he helped the Chargers to a 91-38 record and a pair of national tournament appearances. Nelson came to Briar Cliff from Central College, where he served as an assistant coach for three seasons. There, he assisted in making the program competitive within the Iowa Conference and helped the Dutch to their best record and conference finish in more than a decade. With the entire starting five he helped recruit to Central leading the way, the Dutch won the 2009-10 regular season and conference tournament championship for the first time in fifteen years. Prior to Central, Nelson was the varsity boys’ basketball coach at Ogden High School, where he guided the Bulldogs to a record of 39-10 over two years. Following the 2003-04 season, he was tabbed as the Mid-Iowa Coach of the Year. During the 2000-01 season, he served as the sophomore boys’ coach at Sioux City West High School. The 2001 Morningside graduate was a four-year baseball letterwinner for the Mustangs. The two-time team MVP went on to play two seasons of professional baseball, including a season with the Sioux City Explorers in 2000. The former four-sport standout at Central Lyon High School holds a master’s degree in health science from Fort Hays State University. Nelson and his wife, Michelle, reside in Sioux City with their two daughters, Grace and Claire.

ASSISTANT COACH >>> MARK SVAGERA Mark Svagera is in his second year as an assistant with the Briar Cliff men’s basketball program. In his first season, Svagera aided in guiding the Chargers to a Sweet Sixteen finish at the NAIA Div. II National Championship. Svagera came to Briar Cliff following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Dickinson State University. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Hastings College. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Dana College, serving as an assistant with the women’s basketball program during the 2006-07 campaign. The Ralston, Neb. native graduated from Ralston High School in 2002 and Dana College in 2006. Svagera was a four-year member of the Vikings’ basketball program. He holds a bachelors’ degree in physical education from Dana, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Hastings.

ASSISTANT COACH >>> RON SCHULTZ Ron Schultz is in his 31st year as an assistant with the Charger basketball program. He coached along side NAIA and Briar Cliff Hall of Fame coach Ray Nacke for 22 years, guiding the Chargers to 11 national tournaments and a No. 1 ranking in 1981. Schultz then spent seven seasons working under Todd Barry. During that span, the Chargers qualified for a pair of national tournaments and climbed as high as No. 4 in the nation. Schultz’s portfolio also includes coaching freshmen football, girls’ basketball and sophomore boys’ basketball at Bishop Heelan High School, Sioux City, Iowa. A Sioux City native, Schultz is a Heelan graduate and a Briar Cliff alumnus. While playing basketball at Briar Cliff, he scored the first basket in BC history and finished his playing career with 1,353 points. The 1970 Briar Cliff graduate was inducted into the BCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. In addition to coaching at Briar Cliff, Schultz is a counselor at Heelan High School in Sioux City. He and his wife, Ann, have five grown children.

ASSISTANT COACH >>> ANGELO JAMES

Angelo James is in his fifth year as an assistant coach with the Chargers. Most recently, he served as an assistant football coach at North High School in Sioux City during the past five seasons. Previously, he coached baskeball at Bishop Heelan High School for eight seasons. James is a 1982 graduate of Westmar College, in Le Mars, Iowa, where he was a multi-sport athlete. As an NAIA All-American at Westmar in football, he set numerous school records. James also played basketball for the Eagles, competing against the likes of BCU Hall of Famers Rolando Frazer and Mario Galvez. He has owned his own insurance agency in Sioux City for the past 15 years. James and his wife, Carla, have two sons, Angelo Jr. and Marcus. Angelo Jr. is currently a strength and conditioning coach at the University of Tennessee, while Marcus resides in Sioux City.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH>>> BRYAN FINK

Bryan Fink is in his second year as Briar Cliff’s strength and conditioning coach. The Wayne, Neb. native earned his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association in January of 2011. Fink is also a Sports Performance Director (SPD) certified by Velocity Sports Performance and is certified in Under Armour Combine 360 Training and Testing. Fink was a three-sport athlete at Wayne High School and then went on to play basketball at Morningside College. He graduated from Morningside in 2009 with a degree in business administration. He then spent two years as a graduate assistant at CNOS, while working on his masters’ degree in exercise science from Wayne State. He is expected to earn that degree in December.
