Texas Children’s Hospital allows us to care for more babies locally when they need a higher level of care. In June 2022, the St. Joseph Health Cancer

Center placed Brazos Valley’s first and only state-of-the-art Varian Edge Linear Accelerator into service.

High cholesterol levels are often associated with adulthood. However, children also may experience high cholesterol, which can affect their long-term health. Pediatric high cholesterol, like its adult counterpart, refers to high levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol. Elevated LDL can lead to fatty deposits that cause hardening of the arteries. Complications such as heart attack, stroke and early severe diseases are possible,

according to Children’s Health. John’s Hopkins All Children’s Hospital warns that heart disease has its roots in childhood. Therefore, it is important to be aware of children’s cholesterol levels, as high levels can increase kids’ chances of heart disease and stroke as adults. Childhood obesity, eating a diet high in trans fat and saturated fat, and having a parent or close family member with high cholesterol are risk factors for children. A pediatrician can be consulted and a lipid profile prescribed to check cholesterol levels. Lipid profiles are recommended between ages nine and 11, and again between ages 17 and 21.

Where to go for what: Navigating your healthcare options

You know you need to seek care for your persistent cough, broken bone, or other symptoms, but now what? Should you go to the doctor, walk-in clinic, urgent care or ER? Can you get the care you need from a virtual visit? When you’re sick or injured, where you go depends on the type of care you need. In a true emergency, you should call 911 or go to the emergency room. When you have symptoms that are not life-threatening, it’s best to compare care options based on quality, cost and convenience. Here is an at-aglance guide to navigating healthcare based on the type of care you may need and examples of illnesses and injuries that can be treated in each care setting.

HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM: YOU NEED CARE IMMEDIATELY.

Sometimes, your symptoms require immediate attention and/or hospitalization. If you think you or a loved one may have had a heart attack or stroke, or suffered a life-threatening injury, call 911. A hospital emergency room can provide evaluation and

treatment for serious, life-threatening or disabling conditions, including:

• Chest pain

• Sudden loss of balance, vision change, facial droop, arm or leg weakness

• Difficulty breathing

• Severe abdominal pain, coughing or vomiting blood

• Deep cuts or wounds

• Severe burns

• Severe head injuries

• Poisoning, overdoses and suicidal behavior

Remember, the emergency room is for emergencies. If you end up there with a minor issue, you will wait to be treated until people with critical conditions are taken care of first.

Baylor Scott & White Convenient Care Clinic – College Station is a handy option when you want or need care quickly but don’t require care in an emergency room. The clinic offers same-day appointments or walk-in care. This clinic employs a variety of internal medicine physicians, family practice physicians, pediatricians and ER doctors. They are typically equipped with the ability to conduct X-rays and handle stitches, which many doctor’s offices and walk-in clinics are unable to do.

VIRTUAL VISIT: YOU WANT CARE QUICKLY AND CONVENIENTLY.

E-visits or video visits through the MyBSWHealth app are a convenient option when you can’t physically go to a doctor’s office or require

non-emergent care quickly. Baylor Scott & White providers are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your non-emergency medical needs, making it easier to get the care you need when you need it. If an option with your healthcare provider and insurance, e-visits allow you to fill out a brief questionnaire about your symptoms and receive a diagnosis back from a provider, usually within one hour. Through a video visit, you can chat with a provider (either one you’ve already established a relationship with or a new provider) face-to-face using your smartphone, computer or tablet.

Men and women may have more free time after 50 than they had in previous decades. As children grow more independent and even leave the house, parents look to various activities, including travel, to fill their free time. Travel is often seen as a luxury, but heading off for parts unknown can produce some serious health benefits. A joint study from the Global Coalition on Aging and the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that women who vacation

at least twice a year have a lower risk for heart attack than those who travel once every six years. The study also found that men who do not take annual vacations are at a significantly higher risk of death (20 percent) and heart disease (30 percent) than those who make who take time to get away each year. Vacations don’t even need to be long to produce significant, positive results. A 2018 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that a four-day long weekend vacation positively affected well-being, recovery, strain, and perceived stress for as long as 45 days. Myths and facts about immunizations

Vaccine skepticism has existed for as long as vaccines have been available. However, many people might not have realized the scope of that skepticism until the last two years, when the world confronted a global pandemic. Though vaccinations against COVID-19 were available less than a year after the World Health Organization first declared a pandemic in March 2020, millions of people refused to be immunized. The lukewarm reaction to the approval of the COVID-19 vaccines is a reflection of the skepticism many people still have about vaccines. Debunking some common myths about immunizations may help people rest easier as millions wonder if getting vaccinated is their best move.

MYTH: VACCINES ARE NOT SAFE.

Facts: The WHO notes that the licensing of a vaccine requires exhaustive evaluation and testing. That evaluation and testing is conducted to determine not just the efficacy of a vaccine, but also the safety of it. Any side effects that appear during the prequalification and licensing phase of vaccine development are thoroughly investigated.

MYTH: IT IS BETTER TO BE IMMUNIZED THROUGH DISEASE THAN VACCINES:

Facts: This was a popular outlook among people who did not choose to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, but the facts do not support it. The WHO notes that the immune response to vaccines is similar to the one produced by natural infection. In addition, WHO warns that the price paid for immunity through natural infection can be significant. Mental retardation, birth defects from congenital rubella infection, liver cancer from the hepatitis B virus, or death from measles are some noted potential consequences of natural infection.

MYTH: VACCINES CAUSE AUTISM.

Facts: Autism Speaks, an organization devoted to supporting and advocating for individuals with autism and their families, notes that extensive research has been conducted over several decades and concluded that there is no link between childhood vaccinations and autism. In fact, the WHO notes that the author of a 1998 study that raised concerns about a possible link between the MMR vaccine

and autism was found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical Council in 2010 and has since been barred from practicing medicine in the United Kingdom.

MYTH: VACCINES CONTAIN MERCURY, WHICH IS DANGEROUS.

Facts: The WHO reports that very few vaccines contain thiomersal, an organic, ethylmercury-containing compound. Vaccines that contain thiomersal have only a small amount of it, and the WHO notes that no evidence exists to suggest that the amount of thiomersal found in vaccines poses a health risk.

MYTH: VACCINE-PREVENTABLE CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES ARE A FACT OF LIFE.

Facts: Vaccine-preventable diseases are preventable. Such diseases can lead to serious complications in children and adults who are not vaccinated. Complications can include pneumonia, encephalitis, blindness, diarrhea, ear infections, congenital rubella syndrome, and even death. TF228206

What to do about wellness after 50

Reaching one’s fiftieth birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being for decades to come.

• Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. In 2018, the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 86 percent of pet owners felt their pets make them feel loved while 73 percent said their pets provided a sense of purpose. Pets also can

ensure individuals over 50 stay physically active and provide opportunities to connect with other people.

• Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is improved by engagement in demanding everyday tasks. That study reported that people who learned new skills experienced greater memory improvement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging.

• Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Over time, that natural decline affects strength and agility. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals

reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s. That’s a significant benefit, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every three adults age 65 and older experiences a fall each year, and as many as 30 percent of those falls lead to serious injury.

• Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Opportunities to socialize with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or become more independent. Individuals can take advantage of opportunities to socialize whenever possible.

Various strategies can help people maintain mental and physical wellness as they make their way through their 50s and beyond.

It is vital to make personal health a priority. Despite that widely accepted truth, far too often people delay trips to see their doctors. The coronavirus pandemic only compounded this issue. An April 2020 report from Modern Healthcare found roughly one in three Americans delayed medical care as they coped with the financial loss and stress caused by COVID-19. A report from CTV indicated Canadian cancer diagnoses were down 16 percent from 2018 to 2020 due to closed facilities or fear of getting COVID-19 from medical offices.

Concerns about the pandemic are not the only reasons individuals may skip doctor visits. Some avoid going to the doctor due to fear of the unknown. Dr. Barbara Cox, a psychologist based in San Diego, told NBC News that it’s common to feel reticent and anxious about going to the doctor. Around 3 percent of the population actually suffers from iatrophobia, the medical name for fear of doctors. Most just worry about getting

bad news.

A refresher course on the benefits of visiting a primary care doctor may compel millions to schedule appointments and get back on top of their overall health.

• Chronic disease management: An individual with a chronic disease, such as kidney disease, diabetes or hypertension, should consult with a doctor about the ideal frequency of visits and to coordinate medication and testing with specialists.

• Vaccines and shots: Primary care providers (PCPs) offer routine vaccinations and can ensure that individuals are up-to-date on the immunizations they need to stay safe. Tetanus, diphtheria, shingles, pertussis, flu, and now COVID-19 vaccines are vital to overall health.

• Medical referrals: A PCP can assess a health situation and refer a patient to the correct specialist if more extensive care is needed. However, many chronic conditions can be monitored and addressed by a PCP.

• Cancer screenings: UW Medicine, which specializes in patient care, research and physician training in Seattle, says most people will need a few cancer screenings as they age, including colonoscopies, Pap smears, mammograms, and other important diagnostic tests for cancer. PCPs are usually the first line of defense against cancer and can ensure patients receive the screenings they need.

• Non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries: Unless a situation is lifethreatening or severe, thereby warranting a trip to the emergency room, most people can visit their PCPs for help treating a variety of conditions. When in doubt, individuals should first consult with their general practitioners about the right course of treatment.

• Routine lab work: Blood and urine tests often are part of annual well visit checks. Many PCP offices have phlebotomists on staff so that lab work can be conducted in the convenience of one place and then sent out for testing.

• Work or sports physicals: Certain employers require physical examinations, as do schools and recreational sports leagues. PCP offices are the place to go for these types of examinations, which are generally recommended annually.
