Between The Lanes NEWSLETTER

FROM THE PRESIDENT As the year comes to a close I would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to get the club to where we are today. We are stronger, healthier and growing. It’s because of your support that we have been able to achieve this. Thank you! We have record social members and also are seeing an increase in competitive members. We look forward to seeing our numbers to continue to grow in 2015. If youíve just joined us – WELCOME TO BLACKTOWN! At the last monthly meeting the committee voted on purchasing new training aids to help with the squads. We know that the coaches were thrilled to see their extensive wish list be granted by those at the meeting and we are as well. Over the next few weeks you will start to see Pedro and Alex implementing these new aids to help the kids in training. It certainly is exciting times for the squads in 2015. Our trip to the AIS in Canberra was a great weekend by all who attended. Look out for Pedro’s coaching report of the weekend in this edition. We are looking at a bigger team for next years meet so make sure you get those race entries in next time a be part of the team’s weekend away. Don’t forget that all online entries for our TWILIGHT meet on 10 January close this Saturday 27 December. No late entries will be accepted. You can now only enter via MSW website (Click here to enter) it’s shaping up to be a great meet with a very strong team of swimmers representing Blacktown on the day. See you all there. Our Christmas party was a fun night, much cooler in temperature than last year but that didn’t stop the 150+ strong crowd from enjoying themselves. Thanks to the social committee for ensuring that it was a successful event. See the picture gallery for some snaps from the night. Before I close with my thoughts I would like to thank some people... My thanks to the coaches who have an enthusiasm that knows no bounds. Pedro, Alex, Brendan and Cassandra – thank you. Enjoy your break – youíve all earned it! To the swimmers that are training for State LC championships over the Christmas break – train hard and keep focused on the goals you’ve set yourselves. To the staff at Blacktown Aquatic Centre – thank you for your support and assistance. To our tireless technical officials – you guys are awesome and we appreciate all of the work you do behind the scenes to ensure that our club nights and carnivals are the success that they are. Special mention of appreciation to Kirsty who does our promotions and this wonderful newsletter – you are a clever little duck. Thank you. To the committee and ladies on the desk during the week – I can’t put into words what words of appreciation I have for you. The club has turned our financial position around because of your efforts and dedication for our club. Thank you. Wishing each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas and New Year. May you be well rested to return in 2015 with as much enthusiasm as we are finishing 2014.

COACHING REPORT CANBERRA (AIS) On the 22nd to 23rd of November, Blacktown had a team of athletes travel to Canberra to swim at the Woden Qualifying Meet. Blacktown was well represented at Canberra with a small group of 8 swimmers. The team finished up with a large number of PBs, medals and a few emotional races. With 47 entries we have 31 Personal Best times, this was an excellent result. We may have been one of the smaller teams at the meet but we certainly had our presence known when cheering on the kids in their races. It was a great experience for all our Athletes being able to travel to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) this included an overnight stay nearby for the Team which is extremely important for the development of the swimmer for several reasons and one of those being able to experience a different environment and becoming more confident. The kids and parents enjoyed some down time at the accommodation pool after day 1 and a special mention to Daniel for bringing all of the water balloons – no one was off limits or target. The pizzas were a challenge to eat, who would have thought we got too many pizzas with swimmers! We had plenty of laughs and some good racing and results. Looking forward to returning next year and doing it all again. COACHING REPORT METROPOLITAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Metropolitan Championships (6th and 7th December) was a great competition with a high level participation that include big names of some our NSW swimmers. We were represented by 7 swimmers Matt Galea, Tim Hodge, Daniel Kucheruk, Mitchell Hodge, Kerri Tiems, Eliah Joaquin and Yoongling Kilgannon. Outstanding results for Tim Hodge with three national records and also Top Ten placings for Matthew Galea and Daniel Kucheruk. Our Group of swimmers from Blacktown are young and brimming with talent, we have a lot of potential to improve in the following years.

Metropolitan Championship Team Minus Eliah

Congratulations to all swimmers for the excellent results and a very huge thanks to the parents who have been working hard to make this happen. Pedro Barbosa.

A TOP 10 FINISH

Despite being in bed all day on Saturday fighting the flu, Kerri Tiems showed true determination to participate in the 2014 State Open Water Championships the following day. Kerri not only managed to finish the gruelling 5km race, but she also achieved a 2min PB & a Top 10 finish for her efforts. Congratulations on your fantastic result, Kerri. We are very proud of you. Kerri also competed at the Mudgee Indoor LC Carnival on 30 November. It was both a successful and frustrating day for her, winning a Silver Medal in the Girls Open 400m Freestyle, but finishing just outside the medals in 4th place in another 4 events. Kerri also achieved some impressive PBs. Well done and keep up the great work.

FRIDAY NIGHT CLUB RAFFLES

5th December was international VolUnteer day Thank you to all our dedicated and hardworking volunteers who give up many many hours to support our swimmers at Blacktown City.

Every Friday night we have our raffles, whether it be guessing competitions or the fun of entering to win a prize. Congratulations to our lucky raffle winners, they all look very happy to win their prizes.

60 SECONDS Josh Butler is seen here doing MITCHELL theWITH good deed on a friday night club night , helping BURROWS out one of our younger swimmers. While 4 year old Miss Olivia was racing How long have you been at , Josh was kind to for? safe Blacktown Cityenough Swimming guard her ribbons and hair ties , 2 yrs, arrived Nov 2012 well done and Thankyou Josh.

Winners are grinners!

How old are you Mitchell? I am 13yrs old What level squad are you currently in? Recently moved up to Bronze level How many times a week do you train? 4 times a week What do you love about our Friday Night Club nights? What I truly love about Friday nights is that I get the chance to improve my timeís for club carnivals and zone schooling events. I tend to also think of it as this is our “game for the week”, were all the training is put to the test and is shown by trying your hardest on Friday nights. What is your favourite stroke or event? Freestyle long distance What do you love most about swimming? The things I mostly enjoy about swimming is that it’s not seasonal, and that it is always available all year around. It maintains my fitness, and it’s a place to socialise and make new friends from around the community. Who is your favourite swimmer and why? Timothy Hodge, Tim shows me that it doesnít matter if you have a “disability”, but that you put your mind and time into the sport of swimming. Tim has broken some many records which are mind blowing to think of, then let alone him only to able to swim with only one leg.
