The Themed Dinner Party

S

pending time with family and friends is a favourite pastime of mine. I love socializing and having a good laugh with the people I love. Throw some great food into the mix and I am one happy lady! Dinner parties are a great way to incorporate all of these elements and have a little fun while doing it. Themed dinner parties are a new found love of mine! It can be so much fun when you coordinate the menu and décor with a fun concept for your guests. There are various different ways to go about it. You can have a potluck style dinner where you get everyone to contribute to a pre-selected theme and come in costume to the party. The dinner table and place settings can correspond with the chosen look. It is a great idea to serve a signature cocktail that works well with the theme. Some of my favourite nights have been the Mad Men inspired dinner party where our guests dressed in retro attire and sipped Old Fashioneds. Don Draper would have been proud (Mad Men chain smoking not included)! For a taste of Mumbai, we used brightly colored bedsheets draped over the walls to create a sumptuous Indian sanctuary, dusted the table with gold bangles and jewels, created a menu that was hot and spicy for the dinner guests. Don’t forget the appropriate music! There are also many options that don’t involve costume, but are based on a type of food or diet. I love the 100 Mile Diet dinner party. The menu is centred around ingredients that are found within 100 miles of your home.

Victoria Real Estate Market Still Strong and Steady A total of 905 properties sold in the Victoria Real Estate Board region this May, a 26.8% increase compared to the 714 properties sold in the same month last year. May was another great month for local real estate. It’s been a very active month for sales and listings, and we continue to see consumer confidence in our market as people continue to purchase properties. Across our entire market, home values are up compared to this time last year. In high demand areas with less inventory available, we may see some pressure on pricing, but we also have areas in our market with great variety that offer more options in terms of property and price. The Multiple Listing Service® Home Price Index benchmark value for a single family home in the Victoria Core this time last year was $570,500. The benchmark value for the same home this month has increased by 3.98% to $593,200. There were 4,043 active listings for sale on the Multiple Listing Service® at the end of May, 13.5% fewer than the 4,672 active listings in May 2014. We’ve not seen this many sales in May since 2007 when we saw 963 properties sell in the month. Despite the demand, prices remain competitive and there is great variety in what is available.
