Designing with Patterns

A

dding prints and patterns to a space can add excitement to your décor and take your design skills to the next level of expertise. Mixing many patterns in one space is a current trend seen in many design magazines and on all of the top TV shows. However, it can be somewhat intimidating on your first attempt. While calling in the experts is always a great option for a little help, why not try it out for yourself?

throw pillows, wallpaper, and area rugs are just a few places to start. Don’t be scared to try a few combinations or get your designer to help you out. Have fun with it and don’t worry about breaking the rules!

It is important to understand the plethora of patterns available. Some popular styles include chevron, chintz, damask, hounds tooth and ikat. They can fit into many different genres and periods, such as traditional, retro or contemporary, to name a few. Most are available in many colours and variations to suit the look you are trying to achieve.

- Find a common link between the chosen patterns. This may be colour, texture, style.

Are you wondering how you mix and match patterns to make them work together without becoming a dizzy mess that makes your head spin? Start with a pattern that inspires you. Whether it is bright and bold, or soft and delicate, you need a starting point from which to build your design. One easy trick is to start with just three different patterns. Working with odd numbers is the most favourable to our eye, and is often used in many design disciplines. Choose one solid, one large pattern and one small pattern. Find a common element between the patterns that ties them together, such as colour, texture or scale. Once you feel comfortable selecting three, you can bring more into the design that compliment your previous choices.

TIPS: - Always use an odd number in design. It is more pleasing to the eye.

- Start with one fabric and build from it.
