When it comes to winter fun,

Bethel, Maine

is second to none. Within a short drive of the village, with its array of restaurants, shops and cultural venues, the visitor can find not only world-class alpine skiing, but winter activities as diverse as dogsledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and even caving, in the nearby 750,000-plus acre White Mountain National Forest, one of the northeast’s outstanding natural and recreational resources. The Newry and Bethel area is also the site of some of the most impressive scenery in western Maine with the surrounding Mahoosuc Range and the White Mountains of New Hampshire only a few miles away. Grafton Notch State Park is a popular destination for snowshoeing and ice climbing during the winter and hiking, rock climbing and picnicking are popular in summer. Grafton Notch is also home of Old Speck, the third highest mountain in the state of Maine. We hope the following pages will give you a sense of the splendid variety of winter experiences that await you in this beautiful and friendly part of the world, and provide you with useful contact and other information during your stay here. And for the latest up-to-the-minute information about weekly goings on, pick up a copy of our hometown newspaper, The Bethel Citizen.

New at Sunday River this season Sunday River will benefit from $5 million in capital improvements for the 201415 winter. Last season, parent company Boyne Resorts invested $5.7 million in Sunday River, and with the upcoming projects, Boyne will have invested more than $40 million in the Newry, Maine resort since 2007.

Spruce Peak Triple Chairlift: New Conveyor Loading System Sunday River’s Spruce Peak Triple chairlift will undergo an upgrade in time for winter ahead. A new conveyor loading system is being added to the base of this fix grip lift, which will improve the loading experience, reduce stoppage time, and increase its speed by 20 percent.

Snowmaking: The Best Is Getting Even Better Already able to boast the most advanced snowmaking system in the East, Sunday River will continue to add to this reputation by allocating $1.1 million of this year’s investment package to the purchase of 60 more energyefficient snowguns and 20 new controllable pressure valves for all of the resort’s water pumps. This combination will allow Sunday River to make even more snow using less energy than ever before.

Grooming: Perfecting Snow That You Can Already Count On One reason why Sunday River can claim to have the most dependable snow in the East is because of its ability to make snow. The

More mountain terrain for the experts

other reason is because of its ability to groom it wellsomething that will become even easier to do, thanks to the purchase of two new PistenBully snowcats, a 400 and 400 Park. The addition of these two new machines to the general fleet means that Sunday River’s Parks Crew will also have another cat at its disposal to maintain the resort’s six terrain parks.

More Terrain: Welcome to Hollywood Last year’s addition of 75 acres of new terrain simply wasn’t enough, so Sunday River will add another 10 acres for the coming winter with the addition of its new Hollywood glade. Located on Barker Mountain, this new 10-acre glade sits between the resort’s Agony and Top Gun trails and will have skiers and snowboards seeing diamonds–double black diamonds–in place of stars.

Better Terrain: Race Ready In addition to new gladed

terrain, capital is also being invested in enhancing the resort’s dedicated race trail, Monday Mourning. Summertime earthwork has widened the racer entry point onto Monday Mourning from the T2 trail and come winter, will allow for better event flow, reducing the overall guest impact to neighboring trail Cascades.

Future Stars: Partnerships Make Perfect Sunday River’s Perfect Turn Ski and Snowboard School will partner with Bethel’s Gould Academy and its Competition Program to offer kids ages 8 through 10 the new Future Stars weekend training program, designed to be equal parts fun and focus. Future Stars provides a natural bridge between the fundamentals that students learn through the resort’s River Runner weekend pro-

gram and the competition skills that they go on to learn through the Gould Academy Competition Program.

Perfect Turn: Navigate With Ease Guests of Sunday River’s Perfect Turn Ski and Snowboard School will be pleased to see that its slopeside home base in the South Ridge base area is getting a facelift. New heated concrete decking will provide a seamless transition from lodge to learning center, and better branded directional signing will ensure that all participants get to where they need to go. Photo: Sunday River Resort

As part of Sunday River’s $5-million capital investment plan for the 2014-15 season, the resort is adding 50 acres of new expert terrain: four glades and a double black diamond beneath the Spruce Peak Triple lift. Hollywood will be 10 acres of steep, deep, double-diamond glade between the Agony and Top Gun trails on Barker Mountain. Yetiville, so named for its proximity to Eddy the Yeti’s house on North Peak, is the largest of this season’s new glades at 30 acres. It’s not as aggressive as Hollywood, but since skiers run the risk of having a run-in with a yeti, this trail will be expert-only, with a single black diamond rating. Starstruck and Starwood, both single diamonds, will be cut on Little White Cap. Gnarnia, a new double diamond beneath the Spruce Peak Triple lift, will ask skiers to navigate a, well, a cliff in the upper section before crossing Three Mile Trail and passing into a wider section with glading on skier’s right. This trail will allow access to the Last Tango glade from Spruce Peak. Incidentally, the Spruce Peak Triple will be upgraded this season with a conveyor loading system at its base, which will reduce stop time and increase speed by 20 percent. Sunday River’s Competition Programs are integral to the resort’s identity, so capital is also being invested in enhancing Monday Mourning, Sunday River’s dedicated race trail. Come winter, Monday Mourning skiers will notice a wider entry point from T2, which will reduce race events’ impact on neighboring trail Cascades.

The 2014 Best of Bethel Awards

Each year, Sunday River Resort asks people who love to eat, drink, ski, shop and generally have a good time in the Bethel area to pick the best places to do all of them. It’s the “Best of Bethel” online poll, conducted on the resort’s website (www.sundayriver.com). The results are published late in the ski season in the monthly Sunday River This Winter on-mountain newspaper. For a sampling of the best Bethel had to offer in 2014, read on. Then come visit and decide and vote yourself. The categories will be announced in Sunday River This Winter, so be sure to watch for the publication at the resort.

Best Breakfast: Crossroads Diner For the fourth year straight, Crossroads has taken the proverbial breakfast cake. Also known affectionately as “that place next to Rite Aid,” our readers cast about four times more votes for Crossroads than its worthiest competitor, Erin’s Café. And if you’ve ever rocked up on a Sunday morning for one of the omelet specials or some of that epic homemade raisin toast, you understand why.

Best Cup o’ Joe: DiCocoa’s DiCocoa’s has once again bested that old stalwart Dunkin’ Donuts in the best cuppa category, but we have to admit, it was a close race this year: Just 18 votes separated the two. As much as we occasionally “run on Dunkin,” DiCocoa’s hand-pulled caps are hard to beat in Bethel. We suspect that the über homegrown atmosphere, complete with coffee club, and almond croissants didn’t hurt, either.

Best Lunch Spot: Sliders Whether you’re an omnivore, herbivore, gluten tolerator (or not so much), beer snob, sommelier, or straightup hot cocoa guzzler, Sliders has one of the best menus in the land and its Jordan Hotel location is super accessible via, well, the slopes, so it’s basically the perfect pit stop.

Best Bar, Après Ski: Matterhorn Ski Bar MSB has finally replaced the Foggy Goggle atop the après pyramid, though the Gog put in a good fight. Between its legendary mug club and delectable fare (hey, wood-fired pizza!), the Matterhorn’s got everything you crave after a long day on the slopes—and some of the most pleasant staff, to boot, according to voters, who nominated 10 standout MSB servers for the Best Waiter or Waitress category.

Best Place to Splurge on a Meal: 22 Broad Street This was another close race. Cho Sun was in the running, but voters ultimately deemed 22 Broad’s authentic, Italian fare (probably the Lobster Fettuccini) the worthiest splurge. To be honest, we’re not so sure that big, Italian dishes for under $20 count, really, as splurges, but we suppose checks can add up quickly, what with the extensive list of appetizers and those killer martinis.

Best International Meal: Cho Sun Though the Jolly Drayman’s English pub eats did garner serious votes, the winner of the Best International category is, far and away, Cho Sun. Always Cho Sun. Specialty sushi, noodle bowls, and awesome sake and cocktails make this place a must for anyone who appreciates Asian cuisine. Best Food on the Run: Good Food Store By a mile! The Good Food Store’s locally made, (mostly) health-conscious, handmade, and, most importantly, delicious, takeaway menu continues to launch it to the top of our Food on the Run list. Whether you’re feeling a gluten-free Portobello Bomb or an enormous whoopie pie for lunch, and craft beer, coffee, or kombucha to wash it down with, the Good Food Store is your place. Just look at the name: ‘nuff said.

Best Shop for Purchasing Locally Crafted Gifts: Nabos Nabos, owned by former Best Waitress winner Amanda Moran, is a repeat winner in this category. The quaint gift shop opened its Bethel location, which is “closed on major holidays and powder days,” in 2011. The shop’s inventory was welcomed wholeheartedly by the townsfolk. “We like to carry a little something for everyone,” Amanda says. And they do: Nabos sells toys, jewels, clothes, and bath and body products—among other things.

Best Photo Spot: Jordan Bowl Yes, yes, we do claim the most stunning panoramic viewpoint in all the land—and the second most stunning, too, for that matter. Jordan Bowl, from which you can see Mount Washington on a clear day, has once again swiped the Best Photo Spot title. On a not-so-clear day, you can still see the snow-covered trees that frame Lollapalooza and Rogue Angel, and that’s not such a bad view, either. The runner-up in this category is Locke Mountain, and the view from up there is often just a blur of racers. Nah, the view from the Locke Triple, which often floats above virgin snow and white-frosted trees, is a sight all its own.

still offer up a challenge, and they’re perfectly situated between lodges, so if you’re a first-timer, you can tackle them with the help of some liquid courage (hot chocolate—what else?) and then unwind with a beer at the Goggle.

Best Spring Deck Scene: Barker Lodge One person said, “BARKER, but again, please don’t tell anyone!” We regret to inform you that Barker’s deck scene is officially out of the bag. Barker’s slopeside spring vibes and afternoon sunshine earned it 84 votes—about three times as many as the category’s runner-up. Oh yeah, it’s also a repeat winner. See you there come spring. Best Annual Event: Parrothead Festival Our Jimmy Buffettinspired Parrothead Fest is essentially when we admit that the ski season’s coming to a close and finally get on board with impending summer. We do it in a big way, with painkillers (the cocktail), live music, BBQs, and, of course, pondskimming. No wonder it wins this category every year.

Best Bump Run: 3D So, this category’s funny. We got a lot of comments about your knees, and a shout out for Killington (nice one), but 3D again took top Bump Run honors this year. It makes sense: 3D’s intermediate moguls are accessible to most people, but they

Best Live Music Venue: The Matterhorn (MSB) With a gazillion vintage skis-turnedcoat racks and traditional ski chalet décor, the Matterhorn’s got a really fantastic, casual vibe going on. It’s definitely a place where people who can hang go to hang, and when there’s live entertainment, which is basically always, it’s that much better. All of that stuff we mentioned before (mug club, amazing pizza) definitely helps, too. Congratulations to the Matterhorn, the first-ever winner of this brand new category!

For skinning skiers, it’s all about the up Most skiers who hit the alpine slopes are there for the downhill thrill, not the uphill trip. But for skiers who enjoy “skinning,” the climb up the trails is what matters the most. Skinning – climbing a ski slope with removable, synthetic material stuck to the bottom of skis – is not new, but its growing popularity is. “The Inuits (native peoples of the Arctic) used seal skin for snow travel,” said Chris Hayward, who with Bob Harkins and other members of the “Earn Your Turns” group regularly climbs the trails at Sunday River. Steve Ochrymowicz of Greenwood is an uphill climber at Mt. Abram who uses slightly different equipment to achieve the same result. He dons lightweight back country skis with “fish scale” bottoms, which allow him to climb the trails without slipping back. He then returns to the bottom of the mountain the traditional way. “It’s all about the up and not so much about the down,” Ochrymowicz said. “It’s like a religion. I appreciate nature much more. I’m a hunter. I’m always in the woods. I look for tracks.” When he first started eight years ago, he got a chilly reception from some alpine skiers surprised to meet someone going the other way. But they got used to seeing him, Ochrymowicz said. “How they wave at me. I’ve got a little fan club. They yell my name,” he said.

Ochrymowicz averages five or six climbs a week. His record for one day is five trips, at an average of about 35 minutes per roundtrip. He keeps to the side of the less heavily-traveled trails to minimize the risk of a mishap with people skiing downhill. “In eight years I’ve never had a close call,” he said. Mt. Abram asks the uphillers to simply check in at their ticket office before starting a trek. At Sunday River, skinners get an uphill access day ticket for $10. They are requested to use particular trails and follow listed safety rules, a policy that was put in place last year. That has all worked out for Hayward and Harkins, who climb three or four times a week. “We’ve had no close calls,” Hayward said. Much of the time they are out before the downhill traffic starts. Harkins, on his alpine skis, and Hayward, on his Telemarks, head up the mountain with other Earn Your Turn members at 5:15 a.m., wearing headlamps. Last winter, the early start meant regularly braving subzero temperatures, but it didn’t take long to warm up. For Hayward, the exercise is also a way to stay in shape for rescue missions with his Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue team. And he uses the skis with skins on some of the rescues. “I use the technique to go into the woods to get people,” he said.

He’s been skinning for 20 years, much longer than many. Harkins has been at it for four. Over the course of the winter, Harkins uses an app on his cell phone to track the total number of vertical feet he has climbed. Last year, he totaled 100,000. “I got there in April,” he said. An average climb is between 1,400 and 1,800 feet. This year Harkins expects to hit 125,000 feet. But it’s not just about reaching goals. “It’s about getting out early in the morning, the solitude, and the exercise,” said Harkins. While Sunday River and Mt. Abram welcome responsible skinning skiers, some ski areas do not allow them because of concerns about liability in case of collisions. But Ochrymowicz compares uphill ski climbing to

Local skinners Chris Hayward and Bob Harkins. skiers who pause along the trail on their way down. He could just as well be, he said, “a skier who happened to stop and take a break.” Hayward hopes ski areas that ban skinning will re

think it, so others can enjoy the benefits he and his group do. “I hope mountains do find ways to approve of it,” he said.

Cross-Country Skiing

There’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of the snowy Maine woods and fields than on a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes.

The Bethel region provides many choices of terrain spread across three Nordic ski areas. And there’s no need to choose just one for a day of skiing – they offer combined day tickets as well as season passes.

Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center Carter’s is located on the Intervale Road in Bethel, 3.5 miles from Route 26. The center offers a mix of gentle scenic terrain along the banks of the Androscoggin River on the west side of the road, along with more advanced and challenging trails that head up Farwell Mountain to the east. The entire Presidential and Mahoosuc ranges can be seen from the eastern trails. There are 60 kilometers of trails, 40 of which are groomed for skating and classical. The rest are groomed for a 500-acre backcountry experience on the mountain. They also have some more challenging ungroomed terrain for the avid backcountry skier or snowshoer. The large proportion of north-facing trails at higher elevations (up to 1,700 feet) ensure more consistent snow throughout the season. Skiers may

also take a break in a yurt-style warming hut, or rest and relax with family and friends at one of the many rustic cabins, located right on the trail system. Carter’s has a fully-equipped cross-country ski shop offering a full line of retail items, including backcountry, touring and racing skis, as well as snowshoes. They also offer rentals and lessons. Carter’s also has a beautiful “Great Room” on the second floor of the ski shop, with cathedral ceiling and many windows. In this room is an extensive collection of unique cross country wood skis dating back 100 years to the great Norwegians. Skiers and snowshoers can also enjoy hot drinks and soups before or after hitting the trails. Opening day is expected to be in early December. Carters also operates a 20-kilometer cross-country center, and one of New England’s best-equipped cross-country ski shops, at their Route 26 farm in Oxford, about 45 minutes south of Bethel. Bethel Nordic Ski Center at the Bethel Inn Located downtown, the Bethel Nordic Ski Center at the Bethel Inn is a classic New England cross country ski center located in The Bethel Inn Resort. The Nordic Center offers 40 kilometers of crosscountry ski and snowshoe trails. Exquisitely tracked and affording full skate lanes, the trails are fun and enjoyable. The terrain varies from wooded trails in mature white pines to sunny fields with views of the Mahoosuc mountain range. Fishing “Hard Water” For winter enthusiasts who want a change of pace from the trails, Orion Outfitters and Guide Service and Bethel, Bait, Tackle and More can help to provide a day of ice fishing on area lakes and ponds. “It’s a great way to round out your stay in Bethel,” says Ron Fournier, a Registered Maine Guide and owner of Orion Outfitters. “Whether you’re a beginner or experienced angler, we’ll provide the gear, bait, and equipment, including lunch and a heated fishing shack, as well as an experienced Maine Guide.” Orion Outfitters offers day trips and evening fishing experiences to meet your schedule. For skiers or snowmobilers staying at area lodging, he said, “We’ll pick you up and drop you off. We take out a lot of families, and large groups as well.” Where does he take them? For the casual fisherman who just wants to catch fish, “we keep it local,” says Fournier. “Within 10 miles of Bethel we have some of the best fishing around, with large and small-mouth bass, brook and brown trout, and white and yellow perch. With kids, you really want to keep them engaged, and excited about the experience.” Nearby ponds that offer a wide variety of fish include Songo, Round, and Twitchell Ponds and Lake Christopher. For more experienced fishermen who don’t mind a short trip, Fournier offers daytrips for salmon or northern pike and other species. For example, he’ll take folks to Kezar Lake, Lake Cobbessee, and other water bodies. But in most

cases even fishermen with a particular fish in their sights don’t have to go far. “Within 20 miles of Bethel you can fish for almost any species in Maine, and catch quality fish,” Fournier says. A unique experience is a night-time fishing trip in search of cusk, which feed at night. Families can enjoy a campfire and kids can roast hot dogs and marshmallows while they wait for the fish to bite. Cusk are known for the excellent table fare, usually in a chowder. With Orion Outfitters providing all the fishing equipment and food, all visitors need is a fishing license – which they can get right at Bethel Bait, Tackle & More, in Bethel Village. The bait shop on Mechanic Street (off Main Street) is often the meeting place or the first stop on a day’s outing. Sarah Lane and Jeremy Fredette have

shiners, smelts, crayfish, Tommy cod, worms, crawlers and more. And for the experienced fishermen who want to do it themselves, BBT&M has it all: augers, traps, jigging rods, bait buckets, aerators and hand warmers, to name a few items. “You can walk through the door with nothing, and leave well equipped for a day on the ice,” says Fournier. And after a long day on the ice, Bethel Bait, Tackle and More has specialty seasonings and marinades for your catch, including a long list of fresh seafood to complement your stay. Bethel: a snowmobile crossroads With more than 10,000 miles of officially maintained sledding trails that traverse New England’s biggest state, Maine is a top destination for visiting snowmobile enthusiasts. It’s all about the trails and the connections. Situated on the flat Androscoggin River Valley, surrounded by hills and mountains, Bethel is a natural crossroads. And snowmobile trails radiate in all directions. Any direction is ideal for one-day trips that cover 75 to 150 total miles, typical for most sledders. Trails leading north of Bethel reach the Rangeley Lakes region via a choice of interesting routes. These include Grafton Notch, one of the most attractive mountain passes in the state, as well as an abandoned railroad grade. Routes leading east of Bethel head into the Oxford Hills, a region characterized by smallish mountains — 1,500-foot elevations are typical — that’s dotted with scattered small communities with white-steepled churches. Two principal routes lead south to Lovell and Fryeburg and the broad Saco River Valley. The easiest and most direct follows an attractive low-elevation route, while the other climbs through remote and spectacular Evans Notch, a dramatic mountain pass that straddles the Maine-New Hampshire boundary.

West of Bethel is New Hampshire and the White Mountains, tallest in the Northeast, and the gateway communities of Gorham and North Conway. Of course, there’s no reason to rack up major mileage on a snowmobile trip to Bethel. The regional trail system is well maintained by snowmobile clubs. And the area’s amenities can’t be beat, including restaurants and motels with direct trail access and plenty of parking and maneuvering space for trailers. Maps are available at Lowell’s Saw Shop on Route 26 in Bethel (across from Telstar High School).

Dogsledding

Traveling by dogsled through miles of white frozen wilderness is a never-to-beforgotten experience. Bethel-area dogsledding services offer a wide variety of trips near and far, ranging in length from a single day to more than a week. At New England Dogsledding at the Telemark Inn near Bethel, a remote wilderness lodge nestled at the base of Caribou Mountain at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest, proprietor Steve Crone and partner Leonarda Joost have dozens of canine critters and decades of experience. Crone uses primarily Alaskan Huskies. The bloodlines in his kennel include many successful veterans of the Iditarod, the famed 1,150-mile dogsled race between Anchorage and Nome. Most of their dogsledding business are three-hour experiences through the White Mountain National Forest, which virtually surrounds their own property, about 15 minutes from Bethel. All-day and Half-day options include frozen Umbagog LakeRegion — about 40 minutes northwest of Bethel — and its thousands of acres of surrounding timberlands in Maine and NewHampshire, as well as a private 7,000 acre high elevation trail system directly from their Balsam’s NH Farmhouse- know for the best snow in the Northeast. Another option for getting outside with some great dogs is skijoring — where a cross-country skier uses canine power to zip across the landscape over hill and dale. Although most of Crone’s guests are day-trippers, his Telemark Inn Wilderness Lodge also provides a unique wilderness experience for the multiple day “Learn To Mush”

Packages. Built in the late 1800s as a wilderness getaway for a wealthy sportsman, the lodge boasts five comfortable bedrooms plus a common area with a huge mineralstone fireplace. For more information call (207) 731-6888 or (207) 7314747 or visit www.NewEnglandDogsledding.com or www.NewEnglandRiding andDriving.com on the Internet. At Mahoosuc Guide Service in Newry, individuals, couples, families or larger groups can book wilderness dogsledding trips, or groups can arrange for special contract adventures. Situated on a 60-acre farm with spectacular views of the imposing Mahoosuc Mountains, MGS also offers a bed-and-breakfast plus a 16-person lodge. Mahoosuc Guide Service is operated by two Master Maine Guides, Polly Mahoney and Kevin Slater. Mahoney has three decades of experience with dogsledding and has raised and trained huskies for a quarter century. Slater, who crafts the company’s sleds from native Maine ash, has also been a professional guide for more than 30 years. They have traveled thousands of miles in the far reaches of Canada with native North Americans, an experience which gives them a deep understanding and respect for the people and their culture. Overnight and weekend trips are held in the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge (where MGS operates under a special-use-permit), about 30 miles northwest of Bethel, while longer adventures visit more distant

Local guide Polly Mahoney hits the trails with a group of adventurers this past winter. sections of the Maine wilderness and Canada. Mahoney also leads women-only trips, where the emphasis is on sharing experiences, working cooperatively and creating a supportive social environment. For those not interested in the winter camping aspect of mushing, Mahoosuc also offers one-half day and full-day tours on their own trail system. They’re not snowmobile trails, so the distances traveled (typically seven to sixteen miles) will vary depending on snow and trail conditions. On full-day trips a hot lunch is provided and there is plenty of time to pet your team of Yukon huskies. For more information: www.mahoosuc.com or (207) 824-2073.

Mornington Crescent Sled Dogs in Albany is a small dogsledding guide service. Caroline Blair-Smith and Andy Bartleet offer half- and full-day tours in the White Mountain National Forest, and in the timberland that stretches from Grafton Notch State Park to the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge. Their dogs are powerful and responsive; eager to pull when in harness and delighted to make friends when not. Andy and Caroline have been professional wilderness educators, Registered Maine Guides and Wilderness First Responders for 20 years. Each tour is customized to the skills and interests of guests because when you book a tour with them, you are their only guests for that day. No experience is necessary. They will

Explore Bethel’s history Visitors looking for the “real” New England experience need look no further than the Bethel area with its clusters of classic buildings, white church steeples. The Bethel Historical Society provides visitors with a doorway to the area’s past from its Regional History Center on Broad Street in Bethel Village. The Bethel Historical Society’s museum, library and archival collections include a broad range of materials documenting the rich heritage of western Maine and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire. The society’s two properties — the 1821 O’Neil Robinson House and the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House — are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and contain more than a dozen period rooms and exhibit galleries. Throughout the year, the society provides a full calendar of lectures, exhibit openings, demonstrations, and educational activities for people of all ages. (Visit www.bethelhistorical.org for a current listing of events and exhibit offerings.) Overlooking the historic Bethel Hill common, the O’Neil Robinson House is one of the community’s most visible landmarks. Regularly changing exhibits, a well-stocked Museum Shop and the society’s administrative offices are located here. The Dr. Moses Mason House, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2013, features a series of fully-furnished period rooms and two floors of Rufus Porter School murals that provide insight into how a prominent Bethel couple lived during the first half of the 19th century. Also located in this building are the society’s research library and a spacious exhibit hall, where special summer displays are offered during July and August and which is used at other times for lectures and other programs.

The Bethel Historical Society is open year-round, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; also Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m., during July & August. It is closed Sunday and Monday, and Nov. 1 through Thanksgiving Day. During July and August (and by appointment at other times), the society’s nineroom period-house museum is open for tours, and, as always, a wide variety of items associated with the region’s past are always available in the Museum Shop. During the winter of 201415, visitors to the Robinson House will be able to view the exhibition, “In the Field & On the Homefront: Bethel During the Civil War,” plus a display of selected artifacts, portraits and rare books from the Gould Academy archives which was recently put on long-term loan to the Society for preservation purposes. For more information, go to www.bethelhistorical.org, call 207-824-2908 /800-824-2910, or visit the Society on Facebook.

A Rich History For centuries prior to colonial settlement, Western Maine was the home of Abenaki Indians and some of their descendants still reside in the region. After the War for Independence (Bethel was the site of “New England’s Last Indian Raid,” in 1781), settlement of the Bethel area by people of European descent increased dramatically. Following the arrival of the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad (later “Grand Trunk Railway”) in 1851, artists, writers, and scores of summer visitors found it easy to travel here to enjoy the spectacular scenery, which included breathtaking mountain vistas, as well as idyllic views of the broad intervales bordering the Androscoggin River.

By the turn of the 20th century, Harvard University professors and New York’s high society journeyed to Bethel to undergo the miraculous “cures,” prescribed by the famed Dr. John G. Gehring, to offset the stresses of life in an industrialized society. The internationally famous organ builder Ernest Skinner — whose remarkable creations still exist at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., Cleveland’s Severance Hall, and at Yale’s Woolsey Hall — married a Bethel woman and is buried beside her in the town’s Woodland Cemetery. Historical novelist Kenneth Roberts worked on his most famous book, “Northwest Passage,” in Riley Plantation

(“Ketchum”), just north of Bethel. William Rogers Chapman, whose family was instrumental in the founding and naming of Bethel, started the Maine Music Festival in 1897 and brought some of the nation’s leading singers and musicians to Maine, and also to Bethel, including Metropolitan Opera star Geraldine Farrar. In 1911, philanthropist William Bingham II chose Bethel as his summer home and proceeded to give away his fortune to assist educational and medical causes throughout New England and the nation. Information about these individuals and events, plus much more, is available at the Bethel Historical Society.

Journeys in the White Mountain National Forest The White Mountain National Forest offers countless opportunities for adventure this winter, appealing to seasoned recreationists and novices alike. The nearly 800,000 acres of public land is managed by the USDA Forest Service for multiple uses, providing recreation, timber, wildlife habitat, wilderness, and clean air and water. Wintertime in the forest provides unique scenery and a variety of recreational opportunities just south and west of Bethel.

Hiking, Skiing, and Snowshoeing

Several commercial cross-country and downhill ski areas operate on the White Mountain National Forest, offering services and convenience. For a more primitive experience, the backcountry

paths of Hayes Copp ski trails wind through Dolly Copp Campground on Route 16, south of Gorham, N.H. Miles of unplowed roads and trails throughout the forest provide solitude and challenge to skiers and snowshoers looking for a true backcountry experience. Winter is a special time of year in the forest, but requires travelers to plan ahead and prepare with the appropriate equipment for comfort and safety. Skis, snowshoes, or foot stabilizers may all be necessary for winter travel. Dress in layers, carry plenty of food and water, and be prepared for unexpected changes in weather. Washington

At 6,288 feet in elevation, the summit of Mount Washington is the highest point in the Northeast and the centerpiece of the White Mountain National Forest. Thousands of hikers and sightseers come each year for a hiking

challenge, to experience Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines, to travel to the summit by road or rail, or simply to enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape. The winter environment on Mount Washington is severe and unforgiving. Major storm tracks converge at the summit, creating a frozen landscape for much of the year, with unpredictable and sudden changes in weather. It is not uncommon to see -30 degrees with 100 mile per hour winds on any given day. Mountain Travel requires special gear, knowledge of the conditions, training in safety techniques, and experience. The U.S. Forest Service can offer advice and information by phone, in person, or via the Mount Washington Avalanche Center’s new website at www. mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org. Visitors can also explore the more sheltered, lower elevation trails around the base of the mountain.

Get to know Bethel: One sweet community project

Although much of the maple syrup produced in New England today is made in commercial facilities that use modern methods to collect and boil the sap, maple sugaring time still evokes images of buckets hung on trees, horse-drawn sleighs, steam rolling from wood-fired evaporators, and friends and neighbors gathering for “sugaring-off” parties. A local initiative called “Tap of the Town” aims to bring the Bethel community together to experience making maple syrup the old-fashioned way. The brainchild of local food enthusiasts Tracey Wilkerson and Gabe Perkins, the project started small last year, with plans to tap about 75 trees and boil down the sap at the Bethel Historical Society. “For years I would talk about a community maple concept with anyone who would listen,” said Perkins. “Then, out of nowhere, I found an article on North Country Public Radio about the town of Tupper Lake, New York, and plans there to implement a communitybased maple syrup project with the Wild Center, a terrific Adirondack natural history museum. I always wondered if someone took my wild idea to heart.” It turns out that the old adage, “great minds think alike,” holds true. Last spring, Perkins was discussing maple syrup with Wilkerson, the director of Gould Academy’s Farm and Forest program, at a Local Food Connection event, when she told him about her idea of starting a community maple project in Bethel called ‘Tap of the Town.’ Word spread, and a small group began meeting to make plans for spring.

In March, five Gould Academy sophomores helped Wilkerson and Tap of the Town volunteer Jean Bass moved maple syrup equipment belonging to Gould to a space between the Historical Society’s Moses Mason and Robinson Houses, where the evaporator was set up and the sap boiled down. “This has been a cooperative effort from the beginning,” said Wilkerson. “The Historical Society offers a good, central location where people can stop by and see what we’re doing. Scott Sumner and the Bethel road crew cleared a space for us to set up the equipment.” Bruce Pierce, who boils sap from about 150 taps at his Newry farm each year, provided technical help. Group members identified which trees to tap, determining which of Bethel’s village trees are sugar maples, and which are other species of maple. (All maples produce sap, but

the sap from sugar maples is sweeter, requiring less boiling to make syrup.) Wilkerson said longtime local arborist and tree surgeon Fred Burk of Newry also provided valuable assistance. “Fred is amazing,” she said. “I can call him up and ask him about any tree in town, and he knows what species it is from memory.” The sap was collected and brought to the boiling site on a wagon hauled by Wilkerson’s two Percheron draft horses, Tasha and Ryah, who live at the Gould Academy barn during the school year. Doug Jones of Cross Excavation and Doug Wilson of D.A. Wilson & Co.donated firewood for the evaporator, and members of the volunteer group footed the bill for 100 new, small-diameter spiles that are made to minimize damage to the trees. The syrup generated was donated to the landowners and people who contributed materials, Perkins said.

Gould Academy students Claire Webster and Emma Bender tending the sap. Bonnie Pooley, who has been involved with the project since the idea was hatched last year, said the group’s mission statement sums up its goals and philosophy: “Tap of the Town is a community-building project to tap Bethel’s maple trees, collect and boil the sap in the traditional way, and to bring local volunteers together to share the

process, the fun, and the maple syrup.” Wilkerson said they hope the enthusiasm will spread to include more participants, more trees, and more sweet syrup to share in future years. “We plan on cranking up Tap of the Town again next year,” said Perkins. “The whole thing was a rousing success.”

Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation (Maine Adaptive) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and provide education and training to children and adults with physical disabilities. The programs are designed to develop skills, independence and fun through active recreation. Founded as Maine Handicapped Skiing in 1982 at Sunday River Ski Resort as an alpine skiing program, Maine Adaptive has since expanded its offerings to include snowboarding, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, golf, cycling, paddling, hiking and fishing at over 20 venues across Maine. More than 400 volunteers assist

our athletes with over 3,700 lessons in winter and summer programs – always FREE of charge. Sunday River is where it all started for Maine Adaptive and is the center of the organization’s largest winter operations including daily lessons and specialty programs including the nationally-renowned alpine race team and the Veterans No Boundaries program (now in its ninth year serving veterans and active-duty military personnel with physical disabilities). Starting right after New Year’s Day through early April an average of 30 participants aged four and over with physical disabilities, arrive daily at our facility next

to the Sundance Trail at Sunday River to take lessons in skiing and snowboarding. To help participants with transportation issues, Maine Adaptive sponsors weekly bus service to and from Portland and can be easily arranged by calling the office. Maine Adaptive has developed several exciting partnerships with various school districts, camps, rehabilitation facilities and service/care providers to engage more people with disabilities throughout New England in adaptive skiing and recreation, and many of those partnerships have yielded additional opportunities for participants new to Sunday River and/or Maine Adaptive.
