2010/2011 ANNUAL REPORT

Transformation is life. Every day we transform discovery into knowledge and despair into hope. Some transformation happens on its own. At other times transformation can only result from your generosity.

Hudson Verigin has cystic fibrosis. We’re working with his family to ensure the disease doesn’t define who he is. Our researchers discovered that children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes have an imbalance in their immune cells. Could this discovery lead to a cure? BC Children’s Hospital was designed to accommodate 35,000 annual patient visits. In 2010 the hospital had over 205,000 visits. How can we care for tomorrow’s patients? Milan and Maureen Ilich were the first to make a donation of $1 million or more to the Campaign for BC Children. Today we’ve raised over $134 million toward our $200-million goal. Parents and medical staff are participating in the planning of the new BC Children’s Hospital. Their suggestions will help revolutionize the delivery of pediatric care in BC. In the past year, more than 115,200 individuals and organizations made donations to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. What impact will this have on the lives of thousands of children in BC and the Yukon? Transformation.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR

KEVIN BENT, CHAIR, BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Transformation begins with you – our donors. You have been the drivers of change at BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Child & Family Research Institute for many years. Since our Foundation was established in 1949, hundreds of thousands of young lives have been transformed by our donors’ generosity. That trend continues and, on April 4, just after the conclusion of our 2010-11 fiscal year, we broke ground on the

The ultimate goal of our Campaign for BC Children, beyond the $200 million we’re raising to support the construction of the new hospital and Child Health BC, is to transform the delivery of specialized care to BC’s children and youth. We’ve had a great year – our first as Foundation president and chair, respectively. With your support, the Foundation surpassed previous years’ performance, bringing in $85.5 million in consolidated revenue and close to $30 million in campaign donations.

More than 115,200 donors to BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill and the Child & Family Research Institute helped make this possible. Included in this number are donors to our annual fundraising initiatives, which culminated in the announcement of $16.5 million raised at the Miracle Weekend celebration in June 2010. This result reflected a return to strength in terms of dollars raised, number of donors and investment income following the challenging years of 2008 and 2009. Research programs at the hospital and Child & Family Research Institute received a boost in the last fiscal year. The Foundation provided $9.35 million to fund research in 2010-11. The Michael Cuccione Foundation

committed $5 million to name the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program, and the Canucks for Kids Fund donated $2 million to diabetes research as part of a larger gift. The Campaign for BC Children, and our fundraising efforts in general, gained awareness and momentum with the provincial government’s announcement of Phase 1 funding for the new hospital. Since announcing gifts of $25 million from Teck Resources Limited toward the new hospital’s acute care centre and $20 million from the Overwaitea Food Group, lead benefactor of Child Health BC, in 2008, we have been able to reach many milestones thanks to the continuing support of our donors, volunteers and corporate supporters. In addition, a great many staff members at

the hospital, Sunny Hill and the research institute help us give our supporters a better understanding of the scope and depth of clinical care and research that takes place by speaking at countless Foundation events and leading tours of our facilities.

They speak for us because they recognize that the care they receive at the hospital and Sunny Hill is made possible by people like you, and that your gifts and vision will have a similar positive impact on other children and families in the future.

Finally, we have to thank the patients and their families who so willingly share their experiences at BC Children’s and Sunny Hill, at events, on TV, in newspapers, in our magazine, brochures and radio ads, and on our website and Facebook pages. To do so they often relive the painful, emotional moments that have transformed their lives. Their faces and voices capture what is possible when you, our donors, give us the power to change lives for the better.

Some transformation happens naturally. Other changes are brought about as the result of the conscious decisions and efforts of people who can envision something different, something better. You are shaping the future of BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill and the Child & Family Research Institute. You are helping us build a better tomorrow for BC’s children. Thank you for your generous support.

REPORT FROM THE CAMPAIGN CHAIR In September 2010, the Government of British Columbia announced Phase 1 funding of $90.5 million for the new hospital project. This announcement of funding, for design, planning and site preparation, added new momentum to the Campaign for BC Children and led to a surge in campaign activity. Within days we had secured million-dollar gifts from each of board member Doug Gordon and longtime volunteer and former board chair Stephanie Carlson. Others would follow. By June 2011 we had raised over $134 million toward our $200-million goal and planning for the new hospital was well underway. In April 2011 Premier Christy Clark was on hand as we broke ground for the Clinical Support Building and construction began. This building is required to, in the near term, house staff who have to be moved to permit demolition of part of the old Shaughnessy hospital building subsequent to construction of the new BC Children’s Hospital. DONALD LINDSAY CHAIR, THE CAMPAIGN FOR BC CHILDREN

Once again, thousands of British Columbians made donations to the campaign, many in response to our campaign media partner Global BC’s live televised appeals, and others through events in support of the campaign.

Widespread support for the campaign – including gifts from 50 communities from which campaign gifts had not previously been recorded – was accompanied by major gifts from individuals and organizations. These include TELUS and its employees, who contributed $5 million to Child Health BC, and the Canucks for Kids Fund, which directed $3 million of a $5-million gift to the campaign. The Lee family committed $3 million to the diagnostics and imaging area in the new hospital. Other donors stepped up with gifts of $1 million, including the Jack and Doris Brown Foundation, the Patrick and Beryl Campbell Charitable Trust, Jake and Judy Kerr, the Peterson Group, Scotiabank and its employees, and Silver Wheaton.

Completion of the new hospital is still several years away, but the campaign is already having an impact on care. Several specialists who have been recruited in the past year mention the prospect of a new hospital as a factor in their decisions to come to BC Children’s. Child Health BC, with the support of lead benefactor the Overwaitea Food Group, continues to facilitate the provision of specialized care for children closer to their homes around the province. Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, past senior medical director of Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, has taken the role of executive director of Child Health BC. Under her leadership, Child Health BC will continue to play an important role in building pediatric care capacity in communities across BC.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR BC CHILDREN The goal of the Campaign for BC Children is to raise $200 million to support the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and to ensure all of BC’s children have access to a consistent standard of specialized care through Child Health BC. The true benefit of the campaign, however, will be the transformation of pediatric healthcare delivery for close to one million children in BC and the Yukon. Together, the new BC Children’s Hospital and Child Health BC will provide worldclass care to our children when and where they need it. Children are not the sole beneficiaries of the Campaign for

BC Children. Indeed, families and communities across the province are benefiting from this campaign. In the new BC Children’s Hospital, families will be welcomed into a child-friendly facility that features spaces that encourage and enable families to support their children during treatment and recovery. It will be equipped with the latest technology so our outstanding caregivers can do their best work. The transformation the campaign is bringing about isn’t just physical. We’re using this opportunity to ensure children benefit from improved

processes that are aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing fear, speeding healing and minimizing risk. Our caregivers and researchers are constantly improving their ability to tackle complex and chronic childhood illnesses. More children than ever are surviving serious childhood illnesses, but the need will not go away. The Campaign for BC Children will ensure generations of BC children have access to the very best care. Child Health BC, a provincial network of caregivers and health authorities, is focused on building pediatric care capacity around the province.

By working with regional medical facilities and through training and education programs for regional caregivers, Child Health BC is helping children across the province get the care they need closer to home. British Columbians are stepping up to facilitate this transformation of pediatric care. By June of 2011, the community had contributed over $134 million toward our $200million campaign goal. Since the launch of the campaign in 2008, over 27,278 people and organizations from 276 communities in BC and the Yukon have made contributions. Last year alone, 5,170 more donors came forward to support the campaign.

TRANSFORMING BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Teck Resources Limited made a $25-million commitment in 2008 to the acute care centre in the new BC Children’s Hospital. Phase 1 of this project, which includes planning, design and site preparation, is well underway. Expansion of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is complete, increasing the number of beds available long before the new hospital is built. Planners, patient families and health professionals have been working together to develop recommendations for consideration by architects as plans take shape.

Phase 2 – construction of the new BC Children’s Hospital – is expected to take about three years. The new hospital will comprise all the acute-care areas, including the Emergency and Diagnostics & Imaging departments, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and operating rooms, as well as three floors of inpatient beds.

Sophie Pearce-Harvey is a fighter. Born with Down syndrome and a large hole in her heart Sophie had undergone three open-heart surgeries at BC Children’s Hospital by the time she was six months old. At 10 years old Sophie was presented with yet another challenge – she was diagnosed with leukemia. Because of Sophie’s history of cardiac problems, traditional therapies to treat leukemia, which affect the heart, could not be used. Oncologists at BC Children’s came up with a highly customized but risky plan to treat Sophie – many did not expect her to survive. But the feisty teenager, just as she’s done since day one, defied all odds and made it through her threeyear cancer treatment. Today her health is better than it’s ever been. Sophie is one of the province’s growing number of patients who, because of her multifaceted health condition, requires the type of complex and specialized care that only Children’s Hospital can provide.

MILAN & MAUREEN ILICH As leaders in business and philanthropy, Milan and Maureen Ilich have never been afraid to go first. True to form, the Ilichs were the first individuals to step forward with a $1-million lead gift to the Campaign for BC Children. Over the past three decades, Milan and Maureen have helped to promote the health and well-being of children and families throughout British Columbia through the Milan and Maureen Ilich Foundation. Since 1989, they have donated over $1.7 million to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

In addition to their financial contributions, Milan and Maureen’s gifts of time and energy illustrate their lifelong dedication to philanthropy and caring for the needs of children – from being founding members of the Children’s Circle of Care and serving on BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Board, to instilling the value of philanthropy in the next generations of philanthropists. Last year Milan and Maureen were recognized for their outstanding contributions to BC Children’s Hospital at the Children’s Circle of Care Leadership Conference in Atlanta. Their generous spirit and philanthropic leadership are an inspiration to all British Columbians.

In addition to the $20-million pledge from lead benefactor the Overwaitea Food Group, TELUS and RBC have made gifts of $5 million and $2 million, respectively, to Child Health BC. To date, $31.6 million of our $50-million goal has been raised. Dr. Maureen O’Donnell became the executive director of Child Health BC in October 2010. Previously the senior medical director at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the head of the UBC Division of Developmental Pediatrics, Dr. O’Donnell takes a holistic approach to improving child health – from preventing disease before it occurs to ensuring children receive the most complex type of care when needed.

TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE Since the launch of the Campaign for BC Children, 32 donors have contributed gifts of over $1 million. Twelve of these donors made their gifts during the Foundation’s 2010-11 fiscal year. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is proud to recognize the following leadership donors. Elliott REID

Elliott Reid’s most recent trip to BC Children’s Hospital had nothing to do with the heart damage he suffered two years ago when a strep infection went into his heart. The 13-year-old has been airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital twice from his hometown of Tumbler

Ridge in northern BC and undergone two surgeries to treat a life-threatening heart condition. Elliott even persevered through having his chest open in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to monitor him for infection for several days following surgery. Today, thanks to Child Health BC, the Reids travel only a few hours by car to a clinic in Prince George to see a pediatric heart specialist. Getting care closer to home spares Elliott’s family the stress, cost and time of the arduous 18-hour drive to Vancouver. Despite the distance, Elliott’s family decided to make a special visit to BC Children’s this year. On June 4, Elliott presented a cheque for $3,100 on the 2011 Miracle Weekend telethon. Fundraising in his home community was Elliott’s way to give back to the place that helped to save his life.

TELUS With the mandate “we give where we live” at the heart of its culture and as a leader in telecommunications, it is no surprise that TELUS is donating $5 million to help Child Health BC use technology to improve the delivery of specialized care to children across the province. Since 1982 TELUS and its employees have donated over $10 million, in addition to this latest gift, and 20,000 volunteer hours to the hospital. Among TELUS’ many volunteers is Peter Green, senior vice president and president of small and medium business, who serves on BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors. Of the 78,000 patients who visit BC Children’s annually, 67 per cent come from outside the City of Vancouver. We’ll use technology to give BC’s children and regional caregivers better access to specialized medical expertise, ensuring children receive the highest standard of care no matter where they live. This donation will help to minimize or eliminate the need for families to travel to the hospital for treatment, making life easier for both patients and families throughout BC.

PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT Five years ago, the average length of stay in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) was 9.3 days. Last year children admitted to the PICU stayed, on average, 4.4 days. This reduction makes beds available to other children in need of intensive care sooner, and reflects the evidence-based philosophy that children often recover better at home. Still, some children spend weeks, even months, in the PICU depending on the nature of their condition. Caregivers in the 18-bed PICU at BC Children’s Hospital treated 1,161 children last year. This is BC’s only quaternary – or most specialized – intensive care unit designed to meet the needs of our sickest kids. Here, babies, children and teens on life support, recovering from open-heart surgery, or suffering from any number of lifethreatening illnesses, receive around-the-clock attention from a team of caregivers specially trained to care for the most fragile children.

Our PICU staff are committed to making our patients’ and families’ hospital stays a little easier. We do this is by creating an efficient flow of patient care and open lines of communication. Over the past year, we have reduced the length of time families must wait before speaking with a surgeon after their child’s surgery, minimized the number of lab tests that children require – and all the poking and prodding that go along with them – and drastically decreased the incidence of problems associated with collecting and transporting lab specimens. All of this equals better care for the kids who need it most. Learning from recent experiences with SARS and H1N1, the unit has recently acquired 22 new ventilators to help care for BC’s children should a pandemic occur. Outside of the unit, our Home Ventilator Loan Program allows families of children who require ventilators at home to “test run” units

while learning how to improve the lives of their children. Our staff continue to learn as well. Last year more than 150 nurses and community care providers participated in education sessions to update their knowledge and skills.

Thanks to your support, and generous gifts from donors like Mike and Lisa Hudson and the families of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, the new BC Children’s Hospital will have a PICU environment that parallels the level of expertise we already have in place.

TristynTALLIO In his four years, Tristyn Tallio’s life has been full of unexpected miracles. Born with a syndrome so rare that it cannot even be found in a pediatric textbook, he was not expected to survive past birth. He did. As a newborn, with major heart and lung defects, half of a sternum, an enlarged liver and his intestines outside of his body, Tristyn was never expected to leave the hospital. He did. Because of his tracheostomy, he was not expected to speak, but even this, he did. Because of his complex health needs, Tristyn has spent most of his life in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at BC Children’s. For more than three years, it was his home. Through the care and love of his caregivers in the PICU, and his mother Bertha, who has never left his side, Tristyn has overcome insurmountable odds. He left his hospital home several months ago and is headed to kindergarten this fall. For a boy who was never expected to pass his third birthday, Tristyn truly is a miracle.

THE HUDSON FAMILY When Lisa and Mike Hudson first learned about the Campaign for BC Children, they knew that they had to get involved. During visits to the hospital they gained an understanding of the immense need of the patients and families in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Moved by the possibilities, the Hudsons knew it wasn’t a matter of deciding whether or not to give, it was how much. Lisa and Mike were determined to give as much as they possibly could and decided to make a transformational gift five times more than they had originally intended.

For this young family, philanthropy is more than giving money. It is a way to teach their children about what is truly valuable, to share the belief that we all have a responsibility to care for and protect one another, and to create a better world with whatever means we have. Through the campaign, the Hudson family is helping to safeguard the health of children and creating a legacy that their own children can be proud of today, and for years to come.

SUNNY HILL HEALTH CENTRE FOR CHILDREN Gone are the days when children with disabilities and developmental conditions were isolated from society. Today we know that early intervention and therapy can help children with behavioural problems, brain and spine injuries or debilitating illnesses to reach their highest potential. A better understanding of these conditions is helping to remove the stigma of ability challenges, and giving children with a huge spectrum of conditions that affect their growth and development the chance to become active and healthy members of our society. More than 5,000 children are seen at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children each year. With conditions ranging from cerebral palsy to autism, these children benefit from Sunny Hill’s caregivers’ wide range of expertise. Last year, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation raised $1.18 million to

support the varied and unique needs of these children. Equipment purchases of $155,720 included customized bedding for kids with high risk of skin breakdown or positioning difficulties due to paralysis, and a shower trolley that lets children shower and bathe safely on the inpatient unit. Several powered and adjustable wheelchairs designed for a wide range of children and uses were funded, and also a head array with switches that lets kids drive a wheelchair by moving their head. Research is giving us insight into better care, including how to reduce wait times for rehabilitation services and improve care for children with complex and chronic health conditions. We invested $470,000 in research aimed at improving the lives of children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions and chronic illnesses.

Our dedicated staff, under the leadership of Dr. Nancy Lanphear and Fran Boyd, keep our care, research and educational activities thriving. Over the past year we’ve helped to increase the number of child-health professionals

through student training, two developmental pediatrics fellowships and a psychology intern. In total, $230,500 went to training future caregivers of children with disabilities and other challenges.

The “I Can Talk Too” Program received $150,000 to provide assistive communication devices to 79 children last year. Without this program, many of these children would not be able to talk, write or share their feelings with loved ones.

We also supported simple patient comforts – outings, visits from child entertainers, birthdays and holiday parties. Your gifts to Sunny Hill are making all of this, and more, possible.

CarleighO’HARA

Carleigh O’Hara was a healthy, charismatic 17-month-old when her mom, Lisa, heard her breathing strangely in her crib. Unable to wake Carleigh, Lisa called 911. Doctors at their local hospital, unable to get Carleigh’s seizures under control, soon recognized she needed specialized pediatric care. They were raced to Children’s Hospital where Carleigh spent the next week on respirator in an isolation room in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. When she finally woke up, Carleigh could no longer hold her head up, walk, talk or even swallow. Carleigh’s caregivers knew that Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children would be the best place for her to recover – to relearn the skills she had lost so suddenly. The O’Haras spent three months at Sunny Hill, until Carleigh no longer needed a feeding tube, could hold her head up and was crawling again. She has been seizure-free since February 2011 and, though she still has many physical and developmental delays, Carleigh is a happy three-year-old, back to her outgoing and smiling self. Despite numerous tests and assessments, the cause of Carleigh’s condition remains a mystery.

ADRIENNE THIESSEN Last summer, Adrienne Thiessen, owner of Gemini Visuals and member of a non-profit organization called Vancouver Family Roots – a collective of female-run businesses focused on families and healthy lifestyle – decided to host a photo fundraising event in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood. Inspired by Carleigh O’Hara, a client’s daughter, whose story is featured on the preceeding page, Adrienne brought 15 local vendors together to offer natural, organic and “green”

goods for sale, provide education and raise money for Sunny Hill. Held on June 6, 2010, the Kitsilano Photo Fundraiser raised $600, created awareness in the community, and gave families the chance to capture photo memories while supporting charity. Last year, individuals and organizations across BC held more than 100 independent community events that raised over $485,000 for care and research at BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill.

CHILD & FAMILY RESEARCH INSTITUTE At the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI), BC Children’s Hospital clinicians and researchers work hand-in-hand to understand the causes of childhood disease and find better treatments so each child can have the best start in life.

Last year, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation provided $9.35 million to CFRI. Our researchers use this support to leverage external grants: for every $1 from the Foundation, CFRI researchers obtain $6 from major funding competitions across Canada and

internationally. These grants are awarded for specific childhealth research projects that over 800 researchers, trainees and staff work on at CFRI. Among our major contributors to research, the Canucks for Kids Fund announced a gift this past year of $2 million to the Diabetes Research Laboratory at CFRI. Headed by

Dr. Bruce Verchere, CFRI’s diabetes research team includes researchers and clinicians who study ways to prevent and cure diabetes. There is currently no cure for diabetes and children with the disease face life-threatening difficulties in maintaining normal blood sugar and a lifetime risk of nerve damage, blindness, and heart and kidney disease.

Last year, CFRI’s diabetes research team discovered that children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes have an imbalance in their immune cells. While these cells play important roles in fighting infection and preventing disease, sometimes they attack other cells in a child’s body instead – CFRI research suggests this may lead to the

development of diabetes. Our researchers have shared their discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. They hope that, based on these findings, new treatments will be developed to prevent or cure diabetes by targeting immune cell defects. This is one of many examples of research that is possible

because of the close connection between CFRI and BC Children’s Hospital: an unsolved clinical problem that became a research project and led to important new findings that may help to improve child health. Without such research, new treatments won’t be found and disease prevention will remain elusive. Research is essential for BC Children’s

Hospital to provide state-ofthe-art medical care for children, to recruit and retain the best physicians and health-care professionals, and to become a world leader in child health care. Your support makes it possible for CFRI researchers to carry out the research that is needed to give every child their greatest chance for a healthy life.

ColePRICE

Earlier this year, two-yearold Cole Price was sick almost constantly. His mom, Lisa, was concerned but had no idea that Cole’s immune system was turning against the insulinproducing cells of his pancreas. With no family history of the disease, Cole was diagnosed with type 1 (juvenile-onset) diabetes on April 1, 2011. Untrained on how to test glucose levels or administer insulin, his parents commuted daily from Cloverdale, BC, to Children’s Hospital to get Cole the care he needed. After six days of intensive monitoring, treatments and training, Cole’s parents were ready to begin caring for him at home. Right now Cole is in what is called the “honeymoon phase” – his pancreas is still producing some insulin but, over time, will continue to produce less and eventually none. Diabetes researchers at the Child & Family Research Institute are working to find out how to prevent and reverse this process in kids like Cole, with the ultimate goal of one day finding a cure.

The Vancouver Canucks have a longstanding partnership with BC Children’s. Players make regular visits to the hospital and have even been seen playing “hallway” hockey with patients on occasion. In addition to the recent gift, the Canucks for Kids Fund has granted more than $1.3 million to the hospital to build

PEDIATRIC SURGERY In the last 20 years, children’s surgeries have become more complex, requiring larger teams and more technology than ever before. Our surgical teams are working to reduce a child’s fear before surgery, using minimally invasive procedures whenever possible to reduce risk and speed recovery, and seeking alternatives to surgery where appropriate. Still, our surgeons performed 7,898 operations last year, clocking 12,402 hours of operating room time. Our clinics had 48,826 visits from children requiring heart, head, back, bone and other surgeries at BC Children’s Hospital. In addition to performing 1,029 surgeries last year, our orthopedic teams are researching the best ways to treat children – with and without surgery. Under Dr. Christine Alvarez, the Clubfoot Program, which uses Botox instead of surgery, has reduced our surgical rate for clubfoot from 80 per cent to less than two per cent in infants in their first year of life.

Our cardiac surgeons performed 338 procedures in 2010, most of which were open-heart, and a new head of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Sanjiv Gandhi, joined the team. Since his arrival, Dr. Gandhi has reduced the surgical wait time for children with heart conditions and shortened the average length of hospital stays in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit after heart surgery by half. Children in BC made 6,112 visits to our Neurosciences Program outpatient clinics last year, and 1,936 were admitted to the Neuroscience/Surgical

Unit, a 32-bed inpatient unit that sees children in more than 13 subspecialties. As of April 2010, this unit was staffed by 60 nurses, 43 of whom have worked on the unit since its creation. Our ability to retain and recruit nursing and other medical staff is key to the success of our facility – and the well-being of our patients – because keeping expertise in-house, and in-province, helps to improve care for all the children we treat. The Office of Pediatric Surgical Evaluation and Innovation, which celebrated six years of operation this year, recently

established the Special Smiles Dental Desensitizing Program to make dental visits easier for children with behavioural issues. Last year close to 1,000 children had dental surgery at BC Children’s. Among this year’s firsts, the Surgical Day Care Unit, which sees 7,100 children annually, completed its first renovation since 1984. And we are the first Canadian children’s hospital to enrol in a new patient safety initiative – the Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program – sponsored by the American College of Surgeons. Thank you for your support.

Grace teBOEKHORST Grace teBoekhorst has a gift from her father, Dennis, that few children receive from their parents – a kidney. In August 2010, the five-year-old underwent a lifesaving kidney transplant surgery at BC Children’s Hospital with Dennis as her organ donor. Grace suffers from an extremely rare disease called nephrotic syndrome, which damages the kidneys and weakens the body’s immune system. By the time Grace had her transplant she had less than 20 per cent of kidney function remaining and was at the hospital four times a week for hemodialysis. Before the transplant, at the time when she was most ill, Grace was put on an extracorporeal life support machine that performed the functions of her lungs, kidneys and heart, which were all shutting down. Since her surgery last year, Grace has grown three and a half inches and bounced back into an active life. Throughout her journey the caregivers at BC Children’s have become like a second family to the teBoekhorsts, who credit the staff at Children’s Hospital for saving their little girl’s life.

DR. CINDY VERCHERE As a full-time surgeon, Dr. Cindy Verchere, head of the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at BC Children’s Hospital, rarely gets a moment’s rest. She is passionate about what she does – treating children who have suffered burns, hand or facial injuries, or are born with clefts and other visible conditions. Dr. Verchere, and all six other members of her division, are members of the Children’s Circle of Care – an international giving circle that recognizes individuals, family foundations and privately owned corporations who give $10,000 or more annually to their local children’s hospital. The team’s donations, matched 100 per cent with funds provided by two donors, enable her group to hire a clinical fellow and a research coordinator, who are instrumental to the care of children requiring pediatric plastic surgery. She and her team are proud to be able to give back to a cause that is close to their hearts.

CHILDHOOD CANCER PROGRAMS & RESEARCH Changes in cancer treatments, and investments in cancer research, have more than doubled the survival rate for children with cancer in the last 40 years. These numbers translate into many lives saved, but cancer still kills more children in North America than any other disease. Over 130 children and youth in BC are diagnosed with cancer each year, and all of them come to BC Children’s Hospital for care. Currently there are over 760 children in active cancer treatment at the hospital. Last year, 25 children in BC had bone marrow transplants, and our Oncology Outpatient Clinic had 6,804 visits from children and their families. In January 2011, the Michael Cuccione Foundation committed $5 million to name the

Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program. This gift provides 10 years of funding for childhood cancer research at the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI), allowing researchers to deepen our understanding of childhood cancer and seek new therapies. Significant contributions from Balding for Dollars, Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, CIBC and the Chinese-Canadian community will also help children and families by supporting cancer programs and research. New resources bring new researchers. Dr. Gregor Reid, recruited from one of the top US children’s cancer hospitals, joined the research program to help improve children’s survival by reorienting the immune system to attack leukemia. Dr. Kirk Schultz, a world-renowned childhood cancer researcher and clinician, is evaluating a new immune therapy for leukemia based on his team’s work at the hospital and CFRI.

Our clinical researchers continue to lead national and international initiatives, including the C17 Childhood Cancer Developmental Therapeutics Program, cochaired by Dr. Sandra Dunn. As part of the Children’s Oncology Group – the world’s largest children’s treatment research group – Dr. David Dix leads a Wilms tumour study; Dr. Mason Bond leads a sarcoma study; and Dr. Poul Sorensen sits on the Biology and Therapeutics Committee.

As more children survive, we must also look at the effects of cancer treatments over time. Dr. Mary McBride, under Dr. Sheila Pritchard, researches the long-term effects of childhood cancer; Drs. Rod Rassekh, Bruce Carleton and Colin Ross explore why some children develop hearing loss from chemotherapy; and Dr. Sorensen, in collaboration with Dr. Schultz, leads a national study to see why cancers occur in children. These and other donor-funded studies are leading the way to better treatments with fewer side effects.

JaydenPUN

Within 24 hours of arriving at BC Children’s Hospital, Jayden Pun went from Emergency, through multiple tests and examinations, to being diagnosed with leukemia, having a bone marrow biopsy, and his first dose of chemotherapy on June 30, 2008. Amazingly, after two weeks, seven-year-old Jayden was in remission. Despite experiencing common side effects from the cancerkilling drugs – weight and hair loss, fatigue, nausea and vomiting – and an allergic reaction to a platelet transfusion, Jayden endured eight and a half months of intense chemotherapy without complaint. Though he did not go to school for most of his Grade 2 year, Jayden did his school work while at home or in hospital, and was back for Grade 3 in September 2009. With most of the pokes for blood work, chemotherapy and lumbar punctures behind him, Jayden is now in the last phase of his treatment. He visits the hospital once a month and will continue to take oral medication daily at home until his treatment ends on October 28, 2011.

CHINESE-CANADIAN COMMUNITY What started as one person’s dream became an entire community’s pledge to support BC Children’s Hospital. In April 2010, inspired by a longtime volunteer, the Chinese-Canadian community announced its commitment to fund the Oncology Inpatient Unit in the new BC Children’s Hospital by raising $5 million over three years. This ambitious project, aptly named Operation Superhero, will help to transform the environment in which children with cancer will be treated. Since 1994, the Chinese-Canadian community has raised over $38 million for the hospital. In addition

to Operation Superhero, many individuals and corporations within this community – such as the Lee family and the Peterson Group – have made significant contributions to the hospital. To date, Operation Superhero has raised $2.2 million of its goal and is well on its way to becoming the Chinese-Canadian community’s most successful endeavour in support of child health yet.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT For tens of thousands of families every year, the Emergency Department (ED) is their first stop at BC Children’s Hospital. That’s why our emergency staff are ready – at any time – to quickly assess, treat and refer the children we see. To do this, we require skilled critical-care specialists,

a high-tech environment and unique medical equipment designed specifically for kids. Since it opened in 1982 the ED has served the children and families of BC 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is the only facility in BC dedicated solely to emergency care for

children. Children in our ED, which receives an average of 42,000 patient visits each year, may have fractured bones, seizures, painful burns, respiratory illness or life-threatening trauma injuries. Children who require urgent or emergency care in the Lower Mainland may come directly to BC

Children’s ED or be transferred from anywhere in the province. Last year donor support funded the purchase of a Bier block machine, which helps to reduce pain for children who need to have their limbs reset due to a bone fracture or misalignment. The use of regional anesthesia

on the affected limb only, rather than subjecting the child to general anesthesia, permits faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Another recently purchased item is a video-assisted laryngoscope used for intubating children who cannot breathe.

By making it easier for caregivers to clear a child’s airway, the equipment not only helps to save lives but also minimizes the impact a loss of oxygen has on the body. Without enough oxygen, a child can suffer irreparable brain damage in just minutes. While the number of children

requiring this type of emergency intubation is small, it’s an invaluable tool in critical moments. Our ED recently won an award for its family-focused use of digital screens. The screens display wait times and reasons for the wait, keeping families

informed and reducing stress. They also provide information on ED procedures, and supply useful, seasonal health promotion information, such as water, fire, skiing and burn safety tips, to help prevent injuries. Thank you for supporting emergency care at our hospital.

Thanks to a new procedure to help blood bypass a permanent clot in her portal vein, which was the root of her health problems, Gabrielle’s trips to the hospital are nowhere near as frequent. Today, she only comes to BC Children’s twice a year for checkups and her visits to Emergency are virtually none. Gabrielle has dreams of becoming a doctor, just like the ones who have helped her.

GabrielleFRIEDMAN

In her eight years of life, Gabrielle Friedman has visited the hospital more times than a typical adult would in a lifetime. Gabrielle suffered from persistent ear infections, had seizures, and experienced a near shut-down of her major organs, all before her parents even knew the name of their daughter’s condition. She and her family have come to rely on the Emergency Department at BC Children’s countless times for the specialized, lifesaving care Gabrielle has needed over the years.

LEDCOR GROUP OF COMPANIES & DAVE LEDE FAMILY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION There are many reasons why Lee Coonfer feels proud to work at the Ledcor Group of Companies. For one, his employer generously supports the place that helped to save one of his daughters’ vision. When Ava Coonfer was only 10 weeks old, doctors at BC Children’s found a blood-filled blister, caused by a tumour, on her eyelid. The blister threatened her eyesight and she was fitted with glasses at 11 months old. Since 1988, the Ledcor Group of Companies has donated millions of dollars to BC Children’s Hospital, including a $5-million gift, made together with the Dave Lede Family Charitable Foundation, to support the Emergency Department in the new BC Children’s Hospital. As the first line of care for children, Emergency plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating children, like Ava, who come to the hospital. Ledcor’s contributions are a true testament to its core values, as well as to the importance the Lede family places on philanthropy.

EXCELLENCE IN CHILD HEALTH Our hospital requires constant upgrading and investment in order to maintain the excellent level of care we provide to children. That’s why BC Children’s Hospital Foundation raises $13 million to support the Excellence in Child Health Fund every year. These funds are vitally important because, as undesignated dollars, they can be directed to the hospital areas with the greatest need. Excellence in Child Health is supported by the contributions of thousands of generous donors and volunteers, and is celebrated during our annual Miracle Weekend, the most successful children’s hospital telethon in Canada.

Last year, over $2.2 million went toward hospital equipment, including new operating room lights, a high-resolution digital ultrasound machine, and clinical equipment such as high-definition scopes to see inside the body, warming blankets for babies and an electrocardiogram machine to look at children’s hearts. Donations also supported CPR training for our caregivers, web-based information tools for children and families, and helped fund the work of clinical and research staff. Donor funds also supported the Centre for International Child Health (CICH), which received $135,000 to maintain its activities in China, Africa and India. With your support CICH is helping to save children’s lives by

training caregivers in developing nations in cardiac surgery, neuroscience and neurodevelopment, emergency medicine and infectious disease. CICH is also developing programs to prevent bacterial infection in children and provide safe drugs in Africa. Clinical fellowship funding – to support subspecialty training for our physicians – is key to keeping BC Children’s in the lead when it comes to providing the best care for kids. A total of $640,000 supported the work of 15 of our doctors specializing in anesthesia, radiology, psychiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, genetics, orthopedics, infectious diseases, endocrinology, emergency, developmental pediatrics and gastroenterology.

The Telethon Projects Competition provided $250,000 for the innovative clinical projects of junior researchers who are not yet able to get support from larger external funding organizations, and to clinical staff who show the most promise for improving child health care. Seven of these projects were funded in 2010-11. Great leadership sets the pace for the extraordinary work of our medical teams and researchers. Last year, we invested $550,000 to recruit the best medical leaders and scientific minds to our hospital and research institute. With your support we have recruited and retained outstanding physicians, surgeons and researchers, and gained the additional medical expertise and technological savvy we need to keep BC Children’s at the top.

REPORT FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

We are pleased to report that economic recovery is evident in last year’s upswing in donations and investment income to the Foundation. Our total consolidated revenues, including lotteries and investments, increased to $85.5 million in 2010-11. This reflects an increase of more than $29 million from the previous year. The increase in consolidated revenue can be attributed in part to an increase in investment income, but is primarily a result of community support for the Campaign for BC Children, which brought in $29.2 million in new contributions to the hospital redevelopment project and Child Health BC between April 1, 2010, and March 31, 2011. The bulk of these campaign contributions were in the form of major gifts to the Foundation. This return of major gift activity is a good indicator for our recovering economy and we expect that this trend will continue. At the end of this fiscal year, the campaign had reached $132.6 million of its $200-million goal.

Our Miracle Weekend revenue was up as well last year, raising just over $16.5 million in 2010. Following the decline in Miracle Weekend revenue recorded in the previous year, annual program activity in 2010 was in all terms a success. Events such as ChildRun, Jeans Day™ and Mining for Miracles each raised in excess of $1 million. Earlier this year we held our 10th “Choices” lottery. For the second year running, we sold out prior to the early bird draw. The 2011 “Choices” lottery raised over $2.6 million, in addition to our “Dream” lottery, held in July 2010, which raised an additional $2.4 million to

support Children’s Hospital and the Child & Family Research Institute. The “Choices” lottery has raised over $27 million in the past 10 years. The Campaign for BC Children remains a priority, as does supporting the most urgent annual needs of BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Child & Family Research Institute. If you would like more information about the Foundation’s fiscal activity or to receive our audited financial statements, please contact the Foundation at 604 875 2444 or visit us at www.bcchf.ca.

JadenNAKAMOTO Kelly and Derek Nakamoto believe in miracles. Their ninemonth-old son, Jaden, is living proof. During open-heart surgery at six weeks old and weighing only seven pounds, Jaden’s congenital heart defect proved to be more complicated than the routine surgery his doctors had prepared for. The infant had a valve chord overlying the hole in his heart, an unexpected complication that doubled the length of his surgery, and required a surgical repair that may not have been possible without the surgical improvisation and skill of Dr. Sanjiv Gandhi at BC Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Gandhi repaired the defects, and told Kelly and Derek that their son may require another open-heart surgery to fix a leaky valve. But at Jaden’s five-month checkup in April, the Nakamotos learned about a “little miracle.” In the months since his surgery, Jaden’s leaky valve had repaired itself and he won’t require another visit to the hospital until he is two and a half years old. Thanks to the surgical expertise at BC Children’s, Jaden is gaining weight, growing well and en route to becoming an inquisitive toddler.

GABRIELLE SANATANI Most pre-teens aren’t necessarily likely to have the goal of “helping other kids” as a top priority on their to-do list. But 12-year-old Gabrielle Sanatani is not like a lot of girls her age. She has grown up watching her father, Dr. Shubhayan Sanatani, a cardiologist at BC Children’s Hospital, save kids’ lives on a daily basis. Gabrielle and her older sister, Emma, have made fundraising a regular part of their birthday celebrations, asking friends and family to donate to the hospital in lieu of birthday gifts.

Since her first birthday party fundraiser six years ago, Gabrielle has collected over $300 in donations for the hospital. Not only is Gabrielle generously giving up her birthday gifts for children at the hospital, she is also giving them her time. Gabrielle recently volunteered at the 2011 Miracle Weekend in support of BC Children’s Hospital. This junior fundraiser, and over a hundred more like her, is helping to give kids in our province the excellent care they deserve.

WAYS OF GIVING

There are many ways to make a gift to benefit BC’s kids. Bequest in Your Will A bequest is a direction in your will that a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a portion of the estate is to be given to British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital Foundation (our legal name). Life Insurance Giving life insurance is a way of making a gift without depleting your estate or depriving your loved ones of other assets. At the end of your lifetime, the gift of the policy proceeds will be paid by the insurance company directly to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Depending on how the policy is structured, you may receive a tax benefit during your lifetime or your estate will receive the benefit. Flow-through Shares Publicly traded flow-through shares whose hold period has expired are an effective way to give. Flow-through shares – shares of Canadian mining, oil and gas companies – have unique tax incentives that, when combined with a charitable tax receipt, offer even bigger tax savings.

Publicly Traded Securities Donating securities is the most effective way to give. If you own publicly traded securities that have increased in value and you decide to sell them, 50 per cent of the capital gain is taxable. However, if you donate these securities “in kind” to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, no tax is payable on the capital gain. The resulting tax credit from the donation of the securities will reduce taxes payable on other income. Making a gift of publicly traded securities to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is easy to do. Please contact us for a transfer form to facilitate the process. RRSP/RRIF You can name BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as the direct beneficiary of the proceeds of the RRSP or RRIF or you can make a gift to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in your will. The resulting tax credit may be used to offset the tax payable on the redemption of the proceeds of the retirement plan.

Pledges Our pledge program offers you a convenient method of making contributions. The program allows you to spread your contribution over three to five years, usually commencing the year the pledge is made. You will receive full recognition for the value of your contribution as soon as the commitment is made. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is a registered Canadian charity and issues tax receipts for all donations. Tax credits generated by donations can offset tax otherwise payable on up to 75 per cent of your net income in the year of the gift. Any unused tax credits may be carried forward and used to offset taxes over the following five years.
