Broadbridge Heath Rainbows

The rainbows have enjoyed an evening at the campsite finding things for a scavenger hunt and learning about camp safety. We also held our own mini-Olympics where the girls competed to jump high and long, run and threw the furthest. We have a very long waiting list for rainbows and could use 1 or 2 more volunteers to help reduce the numbers waiting to join.

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides

At the beginning of June the guides joined the scouts on a walking expedition starting from the scout hall and finishing at the Beacon Hill scout campsite. Once at the campsite the whole group enjoyed jacket potatoes baked on the campfire and camp doughnuts before joining together for wide games.

The guides have also enjoyed a weekend camp in June at Nowhurst guide campsite where the girls cooked eggs and bacon in a paper bag over a fire and they also made calzone that were cooked on the campfire. We were blessed with warm weather which gave the perfect excuse for wet dodge ball to help keep them cool. The guides are now looking forward to summer camp.

For more information regarding volunteering please visit girlguiding.org.uk For girls to join please visit girlguiding.org.uk Facebook page for the district: Girlguiding Clemsfold District.

Sadly in May, Jim Charman, a former Cub Scout in Broadbridge Heath in 1937 died aged 95. Several years ago I recall him telling me about a Scout camp on the Isle of Wight led by Mr and Mrs Selby. Six Cub Scouts went along and he remembers them all sleeping in the old bell tents. Mrs Whalley, who had the Scout Hall built in 1910 sent £5 for a trip around the island by coach. They camped in Shanklin and, one evening decided to go to the carnival in Ventnor – so they walked there and back, a round trip of over 7 miles.

On a happier note the Scout Group is going from strength to strength with a full membership, until we can recruit more helpers and leaders.

The Beavers have had a fantastic year with 3 new members of the leadership team. They have worked towards a number of badges, explored our campsite and had fun playing games. One of the highlights was a trip to the Fire Station. They were given an introduction to the clothing required, the kind of calls they received and some fire safety tips from White Watch. They even got to see what they had learned about being put into practice when the crew received an emergency call and leapt into action, leaving the tour to be finished another day.

The Cubs have been working hard on their core Scouting skills, such as knotting, navigation and fire lighting. They tried indoor caving and backwoods cooking at the campsite, and many other new activities.

The Scouts have been busy as always, including tidying up our raised beds and the campfire area. They have built a bug hotel for our smaller wildlife friends. Earlier this month 14 Scouts and 3 leaders, joined by some of our local Guides, hiked from the Scout Hall to Colgate Campsite – 7 miles each way, carrying all their own equipment. On arrival, they set up camp and cooked a very welcome meal and later a special treat of homemade campfire donuts. This was followed by a wide game – hopefully ensuring that they all slept well. The older Scouts earned their Expedition badge and finished their Scout Gold Award. For the younger ones it was a huge challenge in the heat – so well done to all!

We've had perfect weather for all of our recent events. First, a group of us enjoyed a lovely visit to Sedgwick Park with its beautiful gardens.

Next was our annual Garden Party - always a great opportunity to get together for a good old natter.

We kicked off with a glass of Pimms, before tucking into a gorgeous cream

ve also had another trip to Fontwell for a day at the races. We didn't pick many winners, but it didn't matter. We just went for fun - and it was certainly that.

As I write, we are busy baking all your favourite things for the Village Fête, which will be over by the time you read this, so if you visited our stall, I hope you found something delicious to enjoy.

We’re having a lovely summerand there are still lots more events to come - often involving cake or something else that’s good to eat! So if that sounds like your cup of tea, do come along and meet us. Or you can contact us if you’d like some more information:

CRICKET: Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

As the sun shines brightly upon the village of Broadbridge Heath, the cricket season is in full swing, accompanied by scorching temperatures exceeding 20 degrees. The Cricket Club, with its first and second XI teams, has had some recent victories, filling the air with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the rest of the summer.

The weather has been a delightful companion to the cricket, with radiant sunshine and blue skies gracing the grounds. The first XI team has experienced a bumpy start, sitting at two wins and two losses. Their most recent game ended in a victory against Ram CC where they displayed skill, determination, and camaraderie on the field. The twos saw their first win against Hindu University CC, and are looking to take that momentum forwards.

As the summer progresses, both the first and second XI teams eagerly await the forthcoming matches. Come along to nets on Tuesday nights or search for Broadbridge Heath on playcricket.com for more information.

God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature. So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.” God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female.

God blessed them:

“Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”

(The Message version of the bible: Genesis 1:26-28)

As a response to this passage from the first book of the bible, St John’s church has decided to begin the journey towards becoming an Eco-church which will become the framework to our activities and attempts to improve our sustainability both in church and in the community. The Eco-church commitment is to five themes: Worship & Teaching; Buildings; Land; Community & Global; Lifestyle. Our first task is to complete an audit of these 5 areas and to then look for opportunities short and long-term to change the way we do things and to seek to make a difference.

You may have noticed that we took part in ‘No Mow May’, a national campaign to allow spring plants a chance to set seed before the first cutting of the year, making for healthier, more diverse lawns and to give wild plants a chance to get a foothold in May, and to bring a boost of nectar to feed bees, butterflies and other pollinators through summer.

We have also begun restoration of the church Memorial Garden (near the front door of the church) and re-planting of the planters around the church which will continue over the summer. In the near future we are hoping to introduce clearer and expanded recycling facilities at the church, to encourage hall users to recycle more and to offer a broader range of items to recycle including postage stamps and jewelry. Our Church Renewal project, which will include replacement of the church windows, a new entrance to the church and underfloor heating, will also provide a good opportunity to enhance the sustainability and future-proofing of our building.

We plan to have a stall at the village fete on 1st July, with children’s activities, information, refreshments and a prayer tent, so why not come along and talk to us about ideas that you may have and ways that we can work together as a community. Have a great Summer!

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath Considering Protection

Knowing close friends are still getting Covid brings back memories and reminds me of the importance of protection. Over the years the amount of protection policies taken out has decreased rather than increased: in 2021 there were 20.4 million policies taken out, which is 30% less than in 2014 (29.3 million)*.

When I started out, a lot of insurance policies were still sold door-to-door and whilst this might not be the ideal method, it did make more people consider their protection needs.

Let’s face it, no-one tends to wake up thinking, "I need to take out life insurance", but we are not all going to lead a long and healthy life. So, what sort of protection do we need?

The answer to this will of course vary considerably, but where to begin?

Covering debts is a good starting point, such as your mortgage. We insure our houses and cars - perhaps because we have to - but isn’t it just as important to insure ourselves if we have financial dependents?

There are many different types of insurance policy and many have their own quirks, so even though there are many comparison websites available today, you can still benefit from seeking professional advice to suit your individual requirements.

So if you would like to consider the protection options why not pick up the phone today and book a free, no-obligation consultation.
