One hates to toot one’s own horn, but seriously, I really love our magazine covers! This month’s cover is a work of art by the Kuwait-based talented artist Nada Dalloul. Nada (@nadameow on Instagram) is an illustrator and doodler, inspired by the absurdities of humanity. Our October issue cover arrives as a celebration of Bibi Salem Al Sabah’s latest book The ABCs of Kuwait, a delightful book for kids and adults alike that highlights a Kuwaiti cultural or heritage icon for every letter of the Alphabet, peppered with nuggets of information that you may or may not already know! Don’t forget to read all about Bibi and her book in this issue’s edition of Truth or Dare.

Kuwait’s real wealth has always been the wonderful people who are changing the world one action at a time, and this month we were lucky to meet a few of them. We’ll start by introducing Faris Almussallam and Mohammad Almaula, co-founders of Blue Book, a culturally focused group trip organizer. They’re helping us rethink the way we travel, converting us from tourists to explorers of culture, all thanks to our content partners over at Social Culture Club Kuwait. Our resident columnist Hamad Al Khudher took us on a different trip when he interviewed Yasmeen AlKandari and Yuser AlMutawa, co-founders of SEEDS Consulting. Their firm focuses on conducting sustainable events and workshops, such as Bloom Market, and providing consulting services for big projects like the new airport in Sabhan, Kuwait.

Speaking of change, we were invited to The Body Shop’s “Beauty of Change” event. They introduced us to the concept of change-making beauty and shared change-making stories from the incredible people who deliver the brand with the most unique ingredients. From the best Shea to growing tea tree plants with loving hands, we learned so much about what it takes to make beauty truly ethical by empowering communities from around the world. The Body Shop has always been a disruptor in the industry by refusing to test on animals, championing activism, and introducing sustainable options earlier than most brands, and we are excited to see how they will be disrupting next. Change was the underlying theme of this issue, and we didn’t even do it on purpose. Nothing means change like giving your home space more purpose, and our friends at IKEA have always been a big name in the change game. Their fifth customer meeting point and biggest store in the country at The Warehouse Mall in Subahiya is bringing more affordable furnishings to everyone. And if you’re in the market for a change behind the wheel, we’re excited to tell you that the Behbehani Motors Company, and their leading automotive brand, Porsche Centre Kuwait, unveiled the much-anticipated Cayenne 2024 under the reminiscent theme “Further Together,” which captures the spirit of passion for automotive excellence.

Change is definitely in the air, and we feel it with every passing day in Kuwait and it feels so good! From strolling down the newly redeveloped Blajat strip, seeing new Bike and Walk Paths popping up on Gulf Road, to the expansive development happening over at Al Shaheed Park. It’s the perfect time to head outdoors, and just sit back, grab a cozy drink, and jump right into our October issue!

Happy reading!

BLUE BOOK

Faris Almusallam and Mohammad Almaula can show you the world

In 2019 Faris Almussallam and Mohammad Almaula joined forces and founded Blue Book, a culturally-focused group trip organizer. The company evolved from a unique travel directory, that combines adventure with comfort, guided by hands-on cultural engagement and small group dynamics. With Blue Book, you are a world traveler and an explorer instead of a tourist. It’s all about having the meaningful experiences that include global traditions, food, and art.

Both co-founders had a culturally rich childhood. Faris grew up in diverse cities such as Ankara, Casablanca, Tunis, London, and Manchester while Mohammad spent part of his life in Edinburgh and Kuala Lumpur and comes from a family passionate about the arts. Their shared experiences are enabling us to learn how to see the world in a new light.

How would you describe yourselves and Blue Book to someone who has never met you and is unfamiliar with the concept of group trips?

Mohammad Almaula: We are travelers and explorers. We love to learn about cultures and make direct contacts with different people around the world. We organize trips for small groups by participating in various activities in the countries we visit.

Faris Almusallam: I’m an adventurous introvert shaped by a global upbringing and a love for aviation. In 2019, I founded Blue Book to offer unique, curated travel experiences in off-thebeaten-path destinations. We handle everything from lodging to activities, such as sushi-making or katana sword training. Just show up with an open mind, and we take care of the rest.

Faris, your international upbringing in various cities like Ankara, Casablanca, and London have surely contributed to your global perspective. How do you apply these experiences in Blue Book’s trips?

Faris: In 7th grade, I lived in Morocco and took a transformative trip to the Sahara Desert. Sleeping in Touareg tents, camel rides, and stargazing amid massive dunes sparked my passion for authentic experiences—exactly what we aim to provide at Blue Book.

Mohammad, how does your experience of living in Edinburgh and Kuala Lumpur for parts of your life, and coming from a background passionate about the arts, influence Blue Book’s trips?

Mohammad: Living in Edinburgh at 12 was pivotal for me. It taught me self-reliance, problem-solving, and broadened my cultural understanding, fueling my ongoing curiosity and love for knowledge.

Blue Book values positivity, respect, and adventurous spirit. How do you ensure that these values are maintained across all your journeys? Could you provide an example of how they have influenced a particular trip?

Mohammad: Since childhood, our love for exploration drives us. With Blue Book, we prioritize open-mindedness and respect for diverse cultures. Every trip is a chance to embrace differences, which we believe is the essence of true adventure and learning.

Faris: To truly enjoy travel, keep an open mind. This could mean tasting local foods, exploring offthe-beaten-path areas, or joining group activities like cooking classes or nature hikes. The aim is to broaden your horizons and connect deeply with both the place and its people.

With trips to 20+ countries and over 140 travelers served, what do you believe has been the key to Blue Book’s success in offering unique and resonant experiences? What sets you apart from your competitors?

Mohammad: What sets Blue Book apart is our deep passion and knowledge of the places we visit. Despite stiff competition, we excel because we’re doing what we love. Challenges are inevitable, but they fuel our motivation to learn and improve.

Faris: At Blue Book, we specialize in group trips for those who usually shy away from them. By limiting our groups to 8 people, we offer personalized attention, easier bonding, and greater schedule flexibility. This approach eliminates the usual drawbacks of group travel, like unwieldy restaurant visits, allowing for a more intimate and customizable experience.

Faris, how do you foster a message of unity and understanding in countries with vastly different traditions and values? What methods do you employ to actively engage travelers with daily routines and local customs?

Faris: Travel with a humanistic lens and a “blank slate” mindset. Recognize shared human experiences while appreciating unique cultural practices, avoiding comparisons to fully engage with each destination.

Mohammad, how do you select the musical and theatrical performances that travelers will attend? How do you ensure that these experiences connect them with the true essence of a nation’s culture?

Mohammad: Knowing a country’s arts enriches your travel choices. We include local performances like Tango in Argentina or Kabuki in Japan as part of our immersive experiences. You’ll learn, even if every show isn’t your taste.

Blue Book has an emphasis on both known and hidden destinations. Can you share an example of a hidden destination that was particularly impactful for a group and why?

Mohammad: Algeria is an undiscovered gem, often

misunderstood due to limited promotion and visa constraints.

As Africa’s largest country, it offers diverse landscapes and a rich history shaped by Phoenicians, Romans, Ottomans, Arabs, and the French.

Faris: Having lived near Algeria for seven years, I was pleasantly surprised by its cultural richness, friendly locals, and natural beauty when I finally visited.

With the majority of your travelers being from the GCC and in the age range of 25- 34, how does Blue Book cater to the specific interests and needs of this demographic? What challenges and opportunities does this present?

Mohammad: Each trip is designed for universal participation, focusing on easy and accessible activities, especially in nature-centric destinations. We balance organized events with free time for independent exploration, shopping, and rest.

Faris: Our clients are generally aged 35-60, mostly women, highlighting our focus on comfort and safety. Many are repeat customers; our upcoming Cambodia trip is fully booked with returning clients, a significant milestone for us.

Blue Book aspires to elevate travel by offering uniquely tailored adventures and emotionally

engaging journeys. As you look to the future, what innovations or expansions are in the pipeline for Blue Book? How do you envision continuing to shape travel beyond borders and foster even more meaningful connections between cultures?

Mohammad: Travel is our passion, not just a business. Our trips are rich in scientific and historical insights, making them akin to live documentaries. This educational focus is wellreceived by participants and signals the future direction of Blue Book.

Faris: As we grow, we’ll maintain our high standards and client- focused approach, which has earned us repeat customers. While we can’t reveal specifics, we’re actively exploring exciting new destinations and ways to keep our client base loyal.

It’s the end of your lives, you can go on one last trip, where do you go and with who?

Mohammad: I will go to one of the remote islands to enjoy swimming in the sea and sunbathing, and live the simple life with whoever I love.

Faris: I’d use every penny of my savings to visit all the remaining places on my bucket list—first class.

BIBI SALEM AL SABAH CREATES CULTURAL DELIGHTS

The ABC’s of Kuwait is her latest literary project and we are in love!

If you haven’t heard of Bibi Salem Al Sabah, then you are in for a treat! If you have heard of her, then there is even more to get excited about. Bibi is a wondrous human being who loves to celebrate all things Kuwait, this includes stickers, cards and of course, books! Not only does she create these little gems that are cultural delights, she also is a part of the women’s Olympic Committee in Kuwait, which has the aim of achieving equality in sports for girls and women. Her passion for Kuwait runs deep.

Bibi grew up in a diplomatic family and this is a big part of her identity. She attributes the way she sees and interacts with things inthe world to her transient upbringing, which has resulted in an unquenching curiosity and a desire to discover new things and places.

She tells us “growing up, we celebrated all the Kuwaiti events abroad. Baba told my four brothers and I from a young age that I am not only the Ambassador of Kuwait, your mother and the five of you are too. We took it seriously! We celebrated everything about Kuwait! When we moved back I realized I see Kuwait in a different lens than people that have lived here all their lives. I wanted to continue and document it in a whimsical way so that it is never forgotten.”

Bibi started coming up with great projects and books to share the beautiful Kuwaiti culture in an approachable way for the younger generations. In 2015, she launched her first project that was a Ramadan Activity Book. The ABC’s of Kuwait is Bibi’s latest project, and the one that is closest to her heart; it is her love letter to Kuwait. If you haven’t read it yet, you should. It is a book that will delight you. What we love about the book (well, what don’t we love about it!) is that the book shares little nuggets

of information that you know, but also little nuggets of information you probably did not know, and that warm your heart when you read them. The book evokes feelings of nostalgia somehow, while still being contemporary. As you turn each page you are delighted by the beautiful illustrations by Nada Dalloul.

Although we all learn the alphabet pretty early in life, and we all know that A is for apple and B is for ball, it is now time to relearn them Kuwaiti style. Did you know that A is also for ‘al abraaj’, which represents our water towers which are a national landmark, and also arfaj, “the national flower, which grows on a bush and without a rain shower”. We sure didn’t!

The inspiration from the book came from Bibi always entertaining her friends with anecdotes about Kuwait. For her, the next natural step was for her to write some of them down. “I picked ABCs because I had 26 letters to work with, or else the book would be never ending! I have self published all my books, here in Kuwait. As soon as Nada, the illustrator, and I finished the final draft, I took it to the National Library of Kuwait to get it a copyright. After the approval, we sent it off to print here, at a local printer,” Bibi explains. Since 2015, Bibi has been using Nada as her illustrator for all her projects, and

they are all sprinkled with a little bit of magic.

It is so important that the Kuwaiti culture be celebrated and kept alive through the youth, we love the work Bibi does. She tells us that “I am a lover of life, travel, people and experiences. I work in education and health promotion. Being that my passion is culture, I am working on a series of books celebrating Kuwait.”

The hardest book Bibi feels she has worked on has been the National and Liberation Day one: 25/26 Feb. The book had to be factually correct about a period in history, but since it was geared towards the youth she didn’t want to overwhelm them with information. It was a delicate balance and she didn’t want to focus on the gruesome parts, but at the same time she did not want to omit history. She also wanted to make sure she reflected the war as Saddam’s war and not blame Iraq. She does a beautiful job writing the book.

It is no secret that Bibi loves books, but she is a voracious reader and is a part of four book clubs! But what you may not know is that Bibi loves rice - she can eat it for literally every meal she tells us. She also is a yoga and meditation teacher, but she doesn’t teach, she considers herself a forever student of life. We are a little in awe and sure you are too!

TALKING GREENE: YASMEEN ALKANDARI AND YUSER ALMUTAWA

Introducing the co-founders of SEEDS Consulting a sustainability focused firm

46

Talking Greene is a series of conversations on sustainability in Kuwait, the organization driving this movement, and finding resources to help the public make more informed decisions. As a business owner in the same sector, I feel it is my duty to support local groups and people who are trying to alter how we shop for products and raise environmental awareness both at home and abroad.

In this feature of Talking Greene, we got to know more about Yasmeen AlKandari and Yuser AlMutawa, co-founders of SEEDS Consulting.  Both of whom have graduated from their master’s degree from Leeds, they have managed to create their company SEEDS that focuses on conducting sustainable events and workshops, such as Bloom Market, and as well as providing consulting services for big projects, specifically for the new airport in Sabhan, Kuwait. They are also the recent winners of the “She’s Next” Kuwait Competition by Visa.

Give me a brief introduction about you guys.

Yasmeen: I studied civil engineering from my

bachelor’s in Scotland however, I hated civil engineering. Hence, I wanted to get a Master’s degree in something more related to design, but sustainability was not in my background, although I knew very little about it. I thought sustainability was just recycling the basic skeleton back then. I then saw this course called Modern Building Design, and I immediately applied for it. That’s how me and Yuser met actually, as we applied to the same course at the same time.

Did your master’s degree expose you more about the environment and sustainability?

Yasmeen: So it was all about modern building design, and one of the main criteria of modern design is it must be sustainable. They have to be energy efficient, water efficient. That was a wow factor for me and Yuser. As a placement course that’s part of my degree, I worked with BDP in Manchester., focused on a project based in Saudi Arabia, and as I was on this project, I noticed that there was a lag between how different cultures design buildings and how to make them sustainable in their own regions.

Why did you apply for this course and how did you find it?

Yuser: I was also always an artist. I always love to have a creative side. And when I graduated, I noticed that the side kills, which was the creative

design, led me to find the Modern Design Course and apply for it immediately. The course module talked about different aspects of design and how it should be integrated with the local environment and how it can be efficient instead of harming the surrounding environment.

Every week, we had a visiting lecturer from a company, we made learning much more fun from people in the industry. My placement was in Bristol, and it was about something called passive house. Basically, it was an architectural firm that was conducting a study on houses completely made from straw bales, making them into panels and using them to build houses for those people who cannot afford to pay so much for other building materials.

Give us an overview of what SEEDS is.

Yasmeen: So when we both came back to Kuwait, we already wanted to do something together since we were in the UK. We never changed our minds about it, but we went to do different jobs as we know the best way to achieve that we wanted is to get some job experience in Kuwait. My last job was working with Limak Insaat Kuwait, at the new Kuwait Airport and I was able to use my experience in my master’s degree and implement it. We are now working with Limak Insaat Kuwait on the new airport project as their subcontractor and local green building experts.

47
[Continued...]

We first started SEEDS as an online directory connecting people with information about sustainable building design in the region. That was back in 2019, and with covid happening, the idea shifted into organizing classes, workshops, and events, which boomed drastically during 2020 to 2021 and that’s how we kicked off into another direction for the business. We built a community, and we started gaining people’s trust. Now, redefined ourselves as a pioneering consultancy offering we also offer SEEDS consulting to help buildings get approved for sustainable building regulations. along with sustainability training and events.

What new projects do you have coming up for SEEDS in the upcoming year?

Yasmin and Yuser: We are currently planning for our second Bloom Market! Which is expected to be hosted in December this year. The market collects all local sustainable businesses in a fun and lively way. It aims to bring the community together while spreading the awareness of sustainability.

What other sustainable brands, whether locally or internationally, are you guys a fan of?

Yasmin and Yuser: We’re a fan of so many different brands! Locally, we like Phula, a sustainable clothing brand founded by a Kuwaiti woman. We’re also fans of the Sanity Store that provides a variety of eco-friendly products. There’s also OG Apothecary Ultimate Wellness Brand & Modern Apothecary. Recently, we also became super fans of Jana Aromas! Their Misk Mamoul is perfection.

What advice do you have for those who want to follow their passion in doing something they love, especially in the sustainability industry?

Yasmin and Yuser: Discovering your passion is a wonderful gift. Hold onto it tightly and learn the skills you need to make it shine. Sustainability can be a challenging concept to convey, but it’s essential for our future. When talking to others, remind them that we’re not separate from the environment; we’re a part of it. When we protect our environment, we’re ultimately safeguarding ourselves and future

generations. So, stay determined, find creative, easy ways to share your message, and keep your words simple and clear. Emphasize that saving the environment means saving ourselves. Keep it simple, keep it inspiring, and remember, our wellbeing is intertwined with the health of our planet.

What’s your future vision for SEEDS?

Yasmin and Yuser: We aim to boost the local green economy in the MENA region. The most sustainable countries in the world like Denmark and Sweden gain their strength from their local suppliers and consultants—a proven formula driving their sustainability prowess. With that being said, we aspire to be just that for the MENA region. With securing our first project in Saudi July this year and our expansion plans to the GCC by mid next year.

Melissa Azavedo Talks Wood Art And Empathy With Stephanie Sequeira

Art is subjective in nature, and there is no accurate perception of it as we all come from different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and experiences. Stephanie Sequeira has delved into a simplistic approach to her wood art that ignites a sense of inspiration and awe, while her peaceful personality envelops each piece - adding an elevated appreciation of her artwork. Let’s get to know more about Stephanie’s story and what moved her to enter the artistic realm.

Stephanie, what enthused you to dwell in wood art specifically?

Since I was little, I have always enjoyed drawing and painting. I recently discovered wood as an excellent canvas to paint on because of its texture and versatility. For this reason, I was drawn more to wooden home décor and signs. I also enjoy creating wood signs that truly speak to everyone with a little humor in them to brighten their day.

Where do you draw inspiration from while creating in your work?

My inspiration to craft wood signs comes from my love of the rustic charm of farmhouse decor and the power of meaningful quotes or sayings.

Personal experiences and memories, as well as the desire to convey heartfelt messages, often inspire wood sign designs as well.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge” as quoted by Albert Einstein. Do you agree with this statement?

I believe it is important to recognize that both imagination and knowledge are valuable and often work parallel to each other. Knowledge provides a foundation upon which imagination can be built, and imagination can encourage individuals to push the boundaries of their existing knowledge.

When I first started working with wood as an amateur, it took time for me to understand its properties and how it behaves with different mediums/treatments. Similarly, gaining knowledge about woodworking tools and techniques along with safety protocols was essential before I dived into the world of imagination.

What is your view about creativity and imagination? Creativity and imagination come into play when I’m mostly working with customized orders. Working with customers’ requests gives me a different perspective on creativity each time and it further develops into an inspiration for some of my other projects.

Empathy is essential in the field of art. There is a level of emotional connection between the artist and the other in terms of how art is communicated. Keeping this aspect in mind, while receiving multiple orders at the same time, have you ever felt that you were not able to empathize with your clients’ requests as much as you wanted?

Empathy is indeed essential in the field of art.

Personally it has helped me connect with my customers’ emotions, preferences, and intentions. Nevertheless, this connection may become more challenging when faced with multiple requests at the same time. The experience can be overwhelming, but it has taught me valuable lessons in time management and order prioritization.

I’ve learned to accept orders based on my workload capacity without compromising on the quality of the work and to communicate effectively and efficiently with other customers, ensuring that their requests would be accomplished in a sufficient amount of time.

Having been on this artistic journey for a while now, could you share with our readers how they can stay true to themselves and to art? Staying true to oneself and to art is an ongoing process of self-discovery and creative integrity. Patience is my constant companion. The creative process can be challenging with self-doubt being the most common; however, be patient and compassionate as growth and improvement takes time.

Although at times the work you do can be overwhelming, never lose yourself, your moral values and kindness. It’s essential to remember that who you are as a person profoundly influences the quality of your work and how you interact with your customers.

Your integrity and gentleness not only shape the character of your creations but also enhance the relationships you build with those who appreciate your art. By staying true to your core values and treating customers with respect and empathy, you not only create beautiful art but also foster a sense of trust and genuineness in your craft.

In the ever-evolving world of creativity, being authentic and ethical remain a constant guiding light, ensuring that your art remains a true reflection of your inner self.

FINDING BALANCE AND HARMONY IN BEING BUSY

The secret to making it all work

I have had to make extremely tough decisions in my life and let go of everything to continue to pursue my dreams. It has been an exceptionally long and, at times lonely journey to scrape together enough to get going and stay in the field. Some days are easy, but most are tough when you are the ceiling of your business; and you make all the final decisions. After 10 years in business, I still do not believe I have found the secret to making it all work. However, what I do know to be true is that without a vision and a will to stay on course no matter what comes your way – only fear and lost dreams will set in. In my business we call it analysis paralysis and I have had many days over analyzing a deal to the point where I was too late to the negotiating table and lost the contract or more.

Due to a life-changing event involving my career many years ago, I was forced to make challenging decisions and change the trajectory of my life which also brought me to Kuwait as well. This seems to happen to me all the time and many entrepreneurs have the same fate. We are lucky to have been pushed into making decisions for ourselves and creating a life we worked hard for. Amongst other things, it is a balancing act where you need to harmonize your life and your business. And; as a woman a sister, daughter, friend, colleague to people I cannot let down. They believed in me when I had nothing left.

I always knew that I wanted to be a business owner and that journey took me an exceedingly long time - that seems like seconds. As a leader, founder, and entrepreneur I know that empathy and compassion are the only two traits that engage others to follow your dream and vision. In 2014, I launched my business, and it has grown into an investing and real estate portfolio across Canada; and hopefully more.

Making decisions is difficult and takes strength and courage. Knowing when to walk away and when to hold your ground is essential as sometimes, we are more emotional than rational, and we say and do things that are harmful to ourselves and our trajectory. Also, at times we may be unknowingly holding a bias towards an event or a person and that affects our judgement. One strategy that I have integrated into my life is to take account of my thoughts and biases and ask myself where they come from and how they are going to affect my business and my bottom line. For me in the housing and real estate market;

it is particularly important to take account of the way I am thinking and how that can hinder my growth. I started my business with $4,000.00 Canadian dollars and I was not afraid yet as time goes on, I need to continuously remind myself of that brave woman that took a risk.

I see my tenants as clients, and I know that if they are not living well then it will reflect poorly on my ability to grow the business at scale. This has and will always be my philosophy. I also engage in philanthropic work to ensure the community is also living well and that we are invested; where we invest. How can we ask people to live in an unfit home in an unfit neighborhood and profit from them? That goes against our mission and vision. Growingly real estate is less about bricks and mortar and more about human development.

People will talk and they will have opinions about you and how you are projecting your future and manifesting your dreams, however they are not the ones in your shoes living your dream to fulfillment. From the inception of my business, I decided to always do the right thing for the team, community and the clients.

MY BACKSTREET BARBER IS DYING

The end of an era is near

My backstreet barber is dying. There is no other word for it, no other explanation. He has lost far too much weight and some of his important front teeth have suddenly gone missing, leaving him with a hollow black mouth. Nowadays, when he finally gets around to trimming around my ears, my eyes grow wide, and I have to hold my breath. His hand trembles as he struggles to get a grip on the scissors, his tongue perched on his upper lip to help him concentrate. Finally, his snipping all done, I can breathe again but then there is always the other side, ear number two, and the process starts again.

According to Abdallah, that is his name, or maybe it is Abdullah, the latest gossip is that Khalid, a mutual friend, has decided to take a second younger wife. Who would have guessed it. Or, at least this is what I think he said because his English is no better than my Arabic, and as long as I nod at the right time, he seems happy. When he gets to the younger wife part, he makes a motion with his hand, smiling, his black mouth growing bigger, blacker. In the end, like always, we often have no choice but to resort to gestures, along with an assortment of Neanderthal grunts and sighs. It all seems to work out, and even though we cannot understand one another completely, it is okay because this is, after all, just some backstreet barbershop, not the UN. All the while the TV that is perched on the top shelf, just beneath the ceiling fan, is forever showing the Kaaba and its endless mass of circling worshippers. And sometimes in mid-snip he will stop to look up at the TV, at this flow of people, as if he has seen a flicker of something, someone

important and needs to see it one last time, just to be sure. In the mirror I watch him watch. There once was a time not long ago before he started dying that his TV was all about Bollywood and sometimes a Turkish soap opera or two. But that was before his skin grew wrinkly, before his mouth became darker, and so nowadays the TV is all about bigger, more important things.

I want to help Abdullah and the best I can do is pay a little extra for my haircut. Actually, since day one I kept insisting he not cut a lot off, just a little, a trim, holding up that space between forefinger and thumb, “Just a little? See?”And eventually he does see and now when I walk in one of the first things he says is, ‘Baby cut’, right. Baby cut.” And of course, he thinks this is very funny and I do too but his black mouth and yellow skin these days ruins everything. Then there are his clothes; nowadays they sag, not even the stuff of clothing really, more like a kind of apologetic drapery.

Now he drops the comb that he has been using on my head, and it strangely clatters across the floor as if it has a mind of its own, and I watch as he stoops to pick it up, his pants desperately clinging on for dear life; and he hitches up his pants, blows some invisible dust off the comb and gives it a whack against the chair before returning it to my hair. I say nothing but continue to look straight ahead, into the mirror.

I was once told by a barber of some 30 years that the best compliment a customer could ever give him was to fall asleep in the chair while he is cutting his hair. “This,” he said, “has to be the ultimate compliment in the world of barbering. It is all about comfort and trust, you see.Trust.” These days, Abdallah’s barbering is nothing like that, not while he is in the process of dying. The last time I saw him I asked him how he felt, wiggling my fingers to help him understand ‘felt’; he said nothing, but motioned to the TV with its Kaaba.

AN APPLE WIN

The best Apple iOS 17 features you need to use right now

Apple has officially released iOS 17 to the public. The latest version of the iPhone’s operating system is packed with scores of new features big and small. But which are the best? Here are the iOS 17 features we’re most excited about.

A simpler Siri prompt, for cutting to the chase

AI chatbots such as ChatGPT are all the rage, but Apple hasn’t given up on its digital voice assistant yet. In iOS 17, Siri gains some new talents, which make the feature both easier to use and more intelligent. Apple is ditching the requirement of having to say “Hey, Siri” to activate the assistant. Now, a user can just say “Siri” followed by their request. Getting rid of the longer phrase makes communicating with Siri feel more natural (and polite).

Additionally, users will now be able to give Siri two commands in succession without having to begin with the “Siri” voice prompt again. So you can initiate a command by saying, for example, “Siri, what’s my schedule like tomorrow?” After Siri answers, you can simply follow up directly with your next command: “Remind me to book a dinner reservation at six.”

Food ID, for sourcing recipes

For several iterations of iOS, the iPhone has been able to use machine learning to identify objects in photographs, such as flowers, cars, and dogs. Apple calls this “Visual Lookup.” But in iOS 17, Visual Lookup is getting an update. It can now identify food dishes in photographs and offer you recipes for similar dishes. This is obviously super helpful to those whose friends are always sending them pictures of their meals.

Contact Posters, for expressing yourself

This year, Apple is giving users a new way to express themselves: the Contact Poster. Think of the Contact Poster as your visual calling card. You can choose a photo or Memoji that best represents

you, and add additional colors and text in a range of fonts.

When you call someone, your Contact Poster will appear on their screen. Your Contact Poster will also be used in other areas of iOS 17, including in apps like Messages and you’ll be able to see others’ Contact Posters in the share sheet when you share a file with them on your iPhone. Plus the Contact Poster is a big part of the new NameDrop feature (more on that below).

Safari profiles, for separating personal and work browsing

Safari is the best browser on the iPhone, and this year it’s getting a major new feature: profiles. Now, in Safari, you’ll be able to create separate browsing profiles – say, one for personal stuff and one for work. Each profile will keep its own history, bookmarks, tab groups, and extensions. Each profile will also store its own cookies, so if you have a work and personal login for a website, Safari will know which login you want to use based on which profile you have selected.

Downloadable maps, for offline navigating

Apple Maps has come a long way in recent years and is now a viable alternative to Google Maps. But in iOS 17, Apple Maps gets a major new feature it has been lacking: offline maps.

Now in Apple Maps, you’ll be able to download an area of the map to your phone, where it will be accessible even if you don’t have an internet connection. This feature is especially useful if you are traveling to a country where you don’t have mobile internet service. It’s also helpful for outdoor

enthusiasts who may be hiking in remote areas with no cell signal.

Interactive widgets, for a hyper-charged homescreen

People love their iPhone home screen widgets. And in iOS 17, widgets are getting a major upgrade. Now, home screen widgets can be interactive. This means instead of the app launching when you tap the widget, you can interact with elements of the widget itself.

For example, the Reminders widget will now let you check off an item on your to-do list right from the widget. Simply tap the circle next to the list item— something you used to need to open the app in order to do. Home app widgets will now allow you to tap them to turn off the lights or draw the shades. And Apple is allowing third-party developers to make their widgets interactive, too.

NameDrop, for sharing your information

NameDrop is a killer new feature of iOS 17 that’s related to the Contact Poster feature mentioned above. With NameDrop, you can hold your iPhone near someone else’s iPhone to share your name, phone, email address—and yes, Contact Poster— with them.

It’s a super simple way to quickly give someone you just met your contact details. NameDrop is useful in any number of situations, such as enabling you to follow up with people you meet at professional networking events, or effortlessly giving that cute person you just met at the bar your number.

MORAL ROBOTS

Why NASA’s Mars rovers could inspire a more ethical future for AI

Since ChatGPT’s release in late 2022, many news outlets have reported on the ethical threats posed by artificial intelligence. Tech pundits have issued warnings of killer robots bent on human extinction, while the World Economic Forum predicted that machines will take away jobs.

The tech sector is slashing its workforce even as it invests in AI-enhanced productivity tools. Writers and actors in Hollywood are on strike to protect their jobs and their likenesses. And scholars continue to show how these systems heighten existing biases or create meaningless jobs—amid myriad other problems.

There is a better way to bring artificial intelligence into workplaces. I know, because I’ve seen it as a sociologist who works with NASA’s robotic spacecraft teams.

The scientists and engineers I study are busy exploring the surface of Mars with the help of AI-equipped rovers. But their job is no science fiction fantasy. It’s an example of the power of weaving machine and human intelligence together in service of a common goal.

Instead of replacing humans, these robots partner with us to extend and complement human qualities. Along the way, they avoid common ethical pitfalls and chart a humane path for working with AI.

The replacement myth in AI

Stories of killer robots and job losses illustrate how a “replacement myth” dominates the way people think about AI. In this view, humans can and will be replaced by automated machines.

Amid the existential threat is the promise of business boons like greater efficiency, improved profit margins, and more leisure time.

Empirical evidence shows that automation does not cut costs. Instead, it increases inequality by cutting out low-status workers and increasing the salary cost for high-status workers who remain. Meanwhile, today’s productivity tools inspire employees to work more for their employers, not less.

Alternatives to straight-out replacement are “mixed autonomy” systems, in which people and robots work together. For example, self-driving cars must be programmed to operate in traffic alongside human drivers. Autonomy is “mixed” because both humans and robots operate in the same system,

and their actions influence each other.

However, mixed autonomy is often seen as a step along the way to replacement. And it can lead to systems in which humans merely feed, curate, or teach AI tools. This saddles humans with “ghost work”—mindless, piecemeal tasks that programmers hope machine learning will soon render obsolete.

Replacement raises red flags for AI ethics. Work like tagging content to train AI or scrubbing Facebook posts typically features traumatic tasks and a poorly paid workforce spread across the Global South. And legions of autonomous vehicle designers are obsessed with “the trolley problem”— determining when or whether it is ethical to run over pedestrians.

But my research with robotic spacecraft teams at NASA shows that when companies reject the replacement myth and opt for building human-robot teams instead, many of the ethical issues with AI vanish.

Extending rather than replacing

Strong human-robot teams work best when they extend and augment human capabilities instead of replacing them. Engineers craft machines that can do work that humans cannot. Then they weave machine and human labor together intelligently, working toward a shared goal.

Often this teamwork means sending robots to do jobs that are physically dangerous for humans. Minesweeping, search and rescue, spacewalks, and deep-sea robots are all real-world examples.

Teamwork also means leveraging the combined strengths of both robotic and human senses or intelligences. After all, there are many capabilities that robots have that humans do not—and vice versa.

For instance, human eyes on Mars can see only dimly lit, dusty red terrain stretching to the horizon. So engineers outfit Mars rovers with camera filters to “see” wavelengths of light that humans can’t see in the infrared, returning pictures in brilliant false colors.

Meanwhile, the rovers’ onboard AI cannot generate scientific findings. It is only by combining colorful sensor results with expert discussion that scientists can use these robotic eyes to uncover new truths about Mars.

Respectful data

Another ethical challenge to AI is how data is

harvested and used. Generative AI is trained on artists’ and writers’ work without their consent, commercial data sets are rife with bias, and ChatGPT “hallucinates” answers to questions.

The real-world consequences of this data use in AI range from lawsuits to racial profiling.

Robots on Mars also rely on data, processing power, and machine learning techniques to do their jobs. But the data they need is visual and distance information to generate drivable pathways or suggest cool new images.

By focusing on the world around them instead of our social worlds, these robotic systems avoid the questions around surveillance, bias, and exploitation that plague today’s AI.

The ethics of care

Robots can unite the groups that work with them by eliciting human emotions when integrated seamlessly. For example, seasoned soldiers mourn broken drones on the battlefield, and families give names and personalities to their Roombas.

I saw NASA engineers break down in anxious tears when the rovers Spirit and Opportunity were threatened by Martian dust storms.

Unlike anthropomorphism—projecting human characteristics onto machines—this feeling is born from a sense of care for the machines. It is developed through daily interactions, mutual accomplishments, and shared responsibility.

When machines inspire a sense of care, they can underline—not undermine—the qualities that make people human.

A better AI is possible

In industries where AI could be used to replace workers, technology experts might consider how clever human-machine partnerships could enhance human capabilities instead of detracting from them.

Script-writing teams may appreciate an artificial agent that can look up dialog or cross-reference on the fly. Artists could write or curate their own algorithms to fuel creativity and retain credit for their work. Bots to support software teams might improve meeting communication and find errors that emerge from compiling code.

Of course, rejecting replacement does not eliminate all ethical concerns with AI. But many problems associated with human livelihood, agency, and bias shift when replacement is no longer the goal.

The replacement fantasy is just one of many possible futures for AI and society. After all, no one would watch Star Wars if the droids replaced all the protagonists. For a more ethical vision of humans’ future with AI, you can look to the human-machine teams that are already alive and well, in space and on Earth.

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

The beauty industry is a mega-polluter. This innovative solution could change that

When my jar of Glossier concealer ran out recently, I stood in my kitchen for five minutes, trying to figure out if I could toss it in the recycling bin. I assumed that the metallic cap was not recyclable, but I squinted to see if the glass jar had a recycling symbol on it. It didn’t, so I tossed it in the trash, feeling a wave of guilt wash over me.

Millions of people go through this experience every day as they ponder what to do with their empty shampoo bottles and lipstick tubes. The beauty industry churns out an estimated 120 billion products every year and the vast majority of packaging ends up in landfills. The problem is twofold: Many bottles and tubes are simply not recyclable, and many consumers don’t bother recycling those that are.

We’re seeing signs of change across the industry. Retailers incuding Sephora and Nordstrom now have recycling bins in-store so customers can recycle beauty waste. Meanwhile, the nonprofit organization, Pact, has brought together 150 beauty brands (and counting) that have committed to sharing best sustainability practices and providing recycling solutions for hard-to-recycle plastics. In the world of technology, the startup Bluebird has built AI software that allows brands to instantly identify the carbon and waste impact of their packaging. This week, Pact and Bluebird have joined forces to ensure all Pact members have access to this data.

The Data Deficit

Since the 1980s, when the U.S. government introduced curbside recycling programs across the country, Americans began to learn what kinds of food packaging can be recycled. There are currently no laws mandating that companies make packaging out of recyclable materials, but over the past four decades, it has become the norm for brands to do so. Soda, beans, and sardines are sold in easy-torecycle aluminum tins; pickles, pasta sauce, and olives are sold in glass jars.

In the beauty and personal care industries, however, companies haven’t made recycling a priority. (For instance, Colgate only developed fully recyclable toothpaste tubes last year, after 150 years in business.) As a result, many beauty packaging suppliers don’t prioritize recyclability in their design process.

One big hurdle to recyclability is that there isn’t standardized packaging in the beauty industry, the way many milk and juice brands use a generic cardboard carton. Instead, beauty suppliers offer a wide range of tubes and bottles, made of diverse materials, only some of which are recyclable. And in order to stand out on the shelf, brands often design their own customized packaging with special caps and unusual shapes—most of which are not recyclable. Then,

there’s the fact that special features like pumps and spray nozzles are made of many complex materials, making them hard to recycle as well.

Globally, only 9% of all plastic is recycled, and experts believe that in the beauty industry, the proportion of plastic recycled is even lower. “Most beauty packaging is too small to be caught by municipal recycling facilities,” says Carly Snider, Pact’s program manager. “And a lot of packaging is made from mixed materials that are also hard to recycle.”

Jamie McCroskery, who cofounded Bluebird three years ago, previously worked for Glossier and observed how mind-boggling the process is for beauty brands to choose packaging. “Even if brands want to become more sustainable, it is hard for them to wade through all the different packaging options and figure out which one is optimal,” he says. “We launched our company to make it easier for brands to quantify recyclability and climate impact when making these decisions.”

Bluebird spent a year and a half gathering data about the different packaging options on the market, delineating what they are made from and where their materials come from. Even within the realm of plastic, there are dozens of options that brands can choose from—ranging from PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), which is clear, reusable, and recyclable to LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene), which is widely used in squeezable bottles but is not recyclable.

Getting to a Tipping Point

Pact is trying to get more beauty brands to care about sustainability. The nonprofit organization was founded by two beauty veterans, Victor Casale, cofounder of MOB Beauty, and Mia Davis, Credo’s VP of sustainability. Their goal is to bring the beauty industry together to promote as much recycling as possible. Right now, there are more than 150 brands that are members of the Pact Collective, including L’Oreal, Fenty Beauty, and Benefit. Members must educate consumers about how to recycle products and provide ways to responsibly dispose of packaging that cannot be recycled at home. Pact now has nearly a thousand beauty collection bins at retail stores, including Sephora, where consumers can dispose of hard-to-recycle packaging. So far, it has collected 156,762 pounds of material. “We know that different packaging types are inevitable within beauty at this point,” says Snider. “We don’t have the solutions to move entirely away from plastic, so we need to find ways to collect materials that are destined for the landfill and find alternative uses for it.”

But ultimately Snider says that these recycling programs are just a stepping stone to broader change. Ultimately, brands need to stop using as much plastic, and move towards solutions like reusable packaging. “We can’t recycle our way out of this problem,” she says.

CAN WE MAKE IT WORK

This is when hybrid workplaces can foster toxicity

As companies initiate return-to-work policies, many are selecting a hybrid arrangement. While combining in-person and remote work seems like you’re marrying the best of both worlds, it could open the door to problems leaders may not see coming. Mark Mortensen, professor of organizational behavior at INSEAD, has been studying remote work for 20 years. He recently published an article in Harvard Business Review called “Why Hybrid Work Can Become Toxic” to alert companies to potential pitfalls.

“To be clear, there isn’t a perfect correlation between hybrid work and toxic workplaces,” he explains. “What hybrid work does, though, is change the parameters.”

Hybrid’s Weaknesses

For example, hybrid work introduces an imbalance due to its nature. “If you’re in the office Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and I’m in the office Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, we have one day that we overlap,” says Mortensen. “I talked to a manager who found that their team basically split because of those dynamics. They had very different imbalanced interactions.”

In addition, hybrid environments cause employees to experience their work in different contexts, such as face-to-face and remote.

“We know that when we’re communicating through technology, such as through a video screen or through audio, we lose a lot of context,” says Mortensen. “It’s hard for me to tell if you are really engaged. Are you sitting there counting the seconds until this boring guy stops talking? Are you happy? Are you annoyed? I’m missing a lot of data. Hybrid work introduces the likelihood of misunderstandings.”

Hybrid workplaces also often lack cohesion and trust, especially for employees hired while the company is completely remote. When people work together in person, they start to learn each other’s work styles. If something out of character happens, they’re more likely to assume there’s a reasonable explanation instead of ill intent.

“What may be an innocuous misunderstanding can devolve into something negative, because it doesn’t have the tools that we would normally have developed,” says Mortensen.

Addressing the Imbalances

Fortunately, toxic workplaces aren’t usually created overnight. Toxicity is more than just tension; tension happens in any normal work environment. Toxicity is when tension becomes persistent. By getting ahead of potential pitfalls, it’s possible to create a hybrid work environment that isn’t toxic.

The key is being cognizant of the lack of context and cohesion by developing a mindset of intentionality. Leaders should purposefully schedule ongoing touch points, even if they take 30 seconds, suggests Mortensen. “Schedule and plan time to have conversations,” he says.

Being more intentional with employee conversations helps build the psychological safety needed to address miscommunications. “You need to have an environment where I can say, ‘That conversation that we had last week? It really triggered something, and here’s how it’s making me feel,’” says Mortensen. “That’s healthy conflict—we have to have it—but that is only going to come if we have a structured process.”

It’s also important to be aware that employees blend more between home and work in hybrid work. Personal tension can transfer to work.

“It takes me six seconds to move from my office into whatever is happening in my house and vice versa,” says Mortensen. “If I’m coming off of having a fight with my partner or a challenge with my kids, that is more likely to cause tensions in my work interaction and vice versa.”

In addition, recognize that tension can emerge

and develop over time and at any time. “If you say, ‘I had my meetings. My team is great, and people are happy,’ that doesn’t mean that they’re going to be that way in six months,” says Mortensen. “Just like your milk has an expiration date, so do your work structures. Maybe everything works perfectly, and we don’t touch it. That’s totally fine. But put a date in the calendar to reassess.”

In hybrid work, the most important thing is driving dialogue. “That dialogue has to be multiparty,” says Mortensen. “We see a lot of caricatures, such as, ‘If you don’t want to be in the office, it’s because you’re lazy and entitled. Or if you want people back in the office, it’s because you’re power hungry and insecure.’ Neither one of these is unilaterally true. I think we need a lot more and better discussions to come to agreements in a useful way.”

THE RISE OF GEN Z

Embrace the digital generation

Values-driven, socially conscious, and unafraid, the class of 2023 is challenging leaders in new ways and prodding companies to put a premium on transparency, flexibility, and authenticity. These eager young adults, who were college freshmen during the pandemic lockdown, are demanding a different kind of work experience—with technology at the center. The American workplace is undergoing a seismic shift as this latest wave of graduates enters the workforce.

Even though they may not be aware of it, Gen Z is having an amazing impact on business. Just out of college, this generation has lived a diverse set of experiences spurred on by the last four years. It’s their turn to bring a fresh set of eyes and ask questions others may be afraid to ask, like, “Why do we do it this way?” and, “Why don’t we challenge the status quo?” It’s up to leaders to listen and give this generation the opportunity to be tenacious, lead with passion, and make an impact.

Tech natives

Gen Z has spent their entire lives in a digital world where technology is second nature and fundamental to their existence. They grew up with smart phones and tablets in their hands and social media at their fingertips. Most never experienced the pre-COVID-19 work environment that many of us consider “normal.” This has significant implications for companies as they onboard and support this new cohort.

As organizations seek to attract, hire, develop, and support these talented young people, they should endeavor to improve the technology experience for employees, much like they did for customers two decades ago. According to the 2023 Alight International Workforce and Wellbeing Mindset Study, only half of Gen Z say their employee benefits application matches the quality and user experience of consumer apps they are accustomed to using outside of work. And while we’re talking Gen Z, keep in mind a better user experience benefits everyone—from baby boomers to Gen Xers to millennials.

As they enter the workforce, Gen Z is looking for companies that are truly on the cutting edge. The expectation is that even non-tech organizations use tech tools in their everyday processes, whether that’s a workplace messaging system or an employer-sponsored benefits app. To attract and retain Gen Z talent, employers must provide access to information where, when, and how employees want it. Take health program utilization, for example. One of the biggest barriers to getting the most out of such benefits is difficulty accessing information, often because the company has invested in so many disparate programs, which can overwhelm and confuse employees. Streamlining benefits programs will improve the experience for all employees and help them recognize and appreciate the investment their employers are making in them.

Address mental health

Young workers are also fiercely protective of their work-life balance, with 45% of Gen Z saying it is an important contributor to good mental health. But it isn’t just Gen Z. According to our 2023 Mindset Study, in the U.S., 44% of millennials, 52% of Gen Xers, and 61% of boomers consider work-life balance to be one of the most important contributors to good mental health. Our study also indicated that 15% of employees are currently experiencing burnout, a 50% increase since 2020. For U.S. employees, better work-life balance, sufficient sleep, and time off are among the most important contributors to good mental health. Increasingly, they expect employers to be mindful of their emotional wellbeing and provide resources such as mental health days and access to mental health support programs and professionals.

Tech and artificial intelligence (AI) empower employers to address the mental health crisis by automating routine tasks and building capacity. By freeing up time for collaborative, strategic work, automation can help Gen Z become more fully engaged members of the workforce, building relationships, communicating effectively, and leading teams. What we have learned with our Alight Worklife® platform is how technology and automation can cut

down on routine tasks by bringing together the HR and benefits ecosystem to help employees better engage with their health, wealth, payroll, wellbeing, and retiree benefits. As the digital native generation, Gen Z is more likely than other generations to use digital wellness apps and digital mental health programs. Technology allows this young generation to more easily seek and access mental health help.

The rise of Gen Z presents a tremendous opportunity for companies to create an employee experience that integrates technology and innovation into everything they do. By 2030, there is expected to be a global human talent shortage of more than 85 million people. Taking inspiration from this new generation—and implementing structures that cater to their perspectives and preferences—will lead to higher retention and significant value to the bottom line. It is time to evolve and adapt by providing customizable benefits and user-friendly programs that actually meet the needs of employees and their families. Whether they graduated in 2023 or 1973, your employees need you to focus on where they are in life. By doing so, we can all foster a workforce that is happy, healthy, productive, and engaged.

BE YOUR BEST SELF

You’re probably thinking about confidence wrong

We’re taught that confidence is speaking up, being interested in other people, and learning their names,” says Sun, author of Gravitas: The 8 Strengths That Redefine Confidence. “It’s puffing up your chest to be assertive. It’s very behavioral.”

If you look up the word “confidence” in the Oxford English Dictionary, it has nothing to do with swagger or performance or bravado, says Sun. “It’s an understanding and appreciation of your own talents and abilities,” she says. “We’re born fully self-confident. A five-year-old is the most confident person. The monologue that goes through their mind is that they’re incredibly capable.”

As adults, however, we’ve experienced setbacks and disappointment, and it becomes hard for us to estimate our own talents and abilities. “Without that [knowledge], you can’t truly be confident,” says Sun. “You’re just acting.”

Defining Your Areas of Confidence

Sun argues that we need to broaden the definition of confidence and recognize that we all are confident in certain ways. She identified eight “confidence languages“, which are areas of strength that underpin confidence.

Leading: You can set strategic direction. You inspire followership, and you’re seen as being in charge. You enjoy leading meetings and have been told you are a great coach. “This is a very classic form of gravitas,” says Sun. “It’s what you think of CEOs having.”

Performing: This expression of gravitas is publicfacing. You’re extroverted and enjoy the energy of other people. You enjoy meeting new people and want to be liked. You also enjoy being the center of attention.

Achieving: You set goals and you work hard to achieve or exceed them. You don’t accept failure, and you operate at a level of high quality and high excellence because you believe practice makes perfect. “This is a winner’s mindset,” she says. “A lot of athletes might have this quality.”

Giving: You feel responsible for others’ success or happiness. You are highly supportive, nurturing, and cooperative. You enjoy helping others with no expectation of return. You’re also a good listener, and people often come to you to vent or for advice.

Knowing: You are the most well-researched, thoughtful, and often the smartest person in the room. You live by the motto “knowledge is power.” “When you’re building Ikea furniture, you read the instruction manual first and there are no screws left at the end,” says Sun.

Creating: You are good at coming up with ideas. You believe in things before you can see them. You like to think about what the future will look like. You understand the power of vision and work hard to make yours a reality.

Believing: You have practical optimism and see positive intent in other people and situations. If things don’t work out, you believe there’s a reason that has put you on another path. Sun calls this the Ted Lasso effect. “His character at many times was underestimated because he didn’t fit that typical coach protocol,” she says. “But it was the infusion of optimism and belief that inspired people to follow.”

Self-sustaining: You like yourself and don’t tie your self-worth to external metrics or validation. This confidence language is what you most need to handle criticism without spiraling. “You see criticism not as a stick of dynamite but as a gift and you can sift through not taking it personally,” says Sun.

Three Ways to Use Your ‘Languages‘

Each language is equal and valid, and there are different situations where you want might want to lean on them. To use your confidence languages, the first step is to own them.

“Connect your confidence language to concrete moments in your life where you felt very successful,” suggests Sun.

Sun compares the process to the Pixar movie

Inside Out. The main character Riley is shaped by core memories that were formed when she was young. “Pick a couple of core memories and run the playback tape on them,” says Sun. “Remind yourself that you created important markers in your life, not by chance, but because of the strength of your confidence language.”

The second step is knowing which language you need in certain situations. If you have a task to accomplish, you can lean into the confidence language that can help. For example, if you need to sell someone on a new plan, you can use performing. Or if you want to ask for a raise, channel self-supporting.

If the language is one you don’t have, Sun says you can pretend in the moment. If it’s something you don’t have and it can be a sticking point for your career, Sun suggests that you find mentors who can help you become better at it.

“We can create dimension and more specificity around feedback and be more competent,” says Sun.

You don’t need all eight confidence languages, says Sun. “It’s not like Pokemon where you have to collect them all.”

Confidence languages can grow and change as you evolve. The key is to reset the standard for what it means to be confident, says Sun. “For too long, we’ve been with that a single version of it, which is behavioral,” she says. “It’s framed mostly by the male leadership we have seen for hundreds of years. Having a new vocabulary through which we can see other people’s talents and appreciate our own talents can be powerful.”

STEP INTO THE METAVERSE

It’s time we had a frank discussion about the state of the metaverse

If you ever sit down with a metaverse enthusiast, you won’t have to wait long before they paint a rosy picture of how virtual worlds will change our lives.

The most bullish metaverse advocates insist that, in just a few short years, we’ll be shopping, socializing, learning, and working with an Oculus Rift strapped to our faces. Our virtual personas will matter just as much as our flesh-and-blood ones. We just have to wait a little bit longer.

This optimism isn’t just shared by the starryeyed metaverse founders—those with millions of hashtags in their X (née Twitter) bios and an almost quixotic belief that metaverse technologies are the future of the Internet. In mid-2022, Pew Research surveyed over 600 “technology innovators, developers, business and policy leaders, researchers and activists” and asked whether they thought the metaverse would be part of our daily lives by 2040. More than half—54%— said yes.

A more recent study commissioned by KPMG— this time of consumers—showed similar, though slightly smaller, levels of belief that the metaverse would eventually enter their daily lives.

The problem with optimism is that it has a comparatively short shelf life. People can’t sustain hope and excitement forever. If you fail to deliver— or, at the very least, show some progress—you’ll soon find yourself swallowed by a rising tide of cynicism and disillusionment.

And so, it’s time we had a frank discussion

about the current state of the metaverse, the current capabilities, and why it’ll take so long to reach the full potential promised by evangelists and enthusiasts.

The state of the metaverse today

In many respects, the metaverse (as it stands in late 2023) looks a lot like any early-stage technology product, where dozens of competitors vie for dominance, although it is yet in its fully conceptualized form.

For comparison, just look at the home computer market of the 1980s, when Apple, Commodore, IBM, and countless others waged a constant war for supremacy. Each vendor had their own idea of what a home computer should be. The battle wasn’t purely for market share, but also for the hearts and minds of consumers.

At the heart of any metaverse experience is the platform, and right now there are several, each with their own fundamental differences. Roblox and Fortnite are games, primarily. Decentraland and Sandbox have designed their virtual economies around cryptocurrencies, as well as the notion of “ownership” using the blockchain. Meta’s Horizon Worlds takes a somewhat syncretic approach, incorporating gaming and social elements, with explicitly-stated ambitions to spread into other use cases.

Alongside these monoliths, there are also smaller discrete “experiences” that aren’t tied to any one major platform and are typically operated by a brand. While they include many of the core components of what distinguishes the metaverse from, say, a video game (an inherently multiplayer experience, a virtual representation of the user, and typically functional objectives), they lack the scale and versatility of a larger platform. These experiences are utilitarian, existing to solve a specific problem or focus on specific IP.

A good example of the latter is Celebrity Cruises 2022 metaverse experience, the Celebrity Wonderverse, where potential customers can create an avatar, board and explore one of its ships and destinations, virtually.

Finally, there are the B2B metaverse products, which are often overlooked for the flashier, more consumer-centric platforms and use cases. The most widely known of these products is Mesh for Microsoft Teams.

Despite being an early-stage technology that’s yet to achieve anything resembling maturity, these B2B products have already demonstrated value. According to a recent survey from Ernst & Young and Nokia, 80% of businesses that have already implemented metaverse technologies say it’ll have a “significant or transformational impact

on the way they do business.” Only 2% described the technology as a “fad.”

Existing metaverse use cases

In many respects, the way we currently use the metaverse matches—or, at the very least, closely resembles—the promises made by the most ardent of metaverse enthusiasts. People socialize and work in virtual worlds. There’s an economy for both digital and real-world goods and services. It’s just a matter of scale and proportion.

So far, we’ve seen large-scale concerts take place in Fortnite, with the headline acts including Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, and Marshmello. Brands have started to build a metaverse real estate portfolio, with the list of early adopters including Burberry, Lucid Motors, and Hyundai. There’s a small, though growing, economy for digital goods and services, including virtual land.

Moreover, even in the business world, enterprise metaverse users are reaping some of the rewards and benefits promised by metaverse proponents. As discussed by the aforementioned Ernst & Young and Nokia survey, 51% of existing corporate metaverse adopters have reported achieving sustainability benefits. A further 39% and 29% saw improvements in their capital expenditure (CAPEX) and their operational expenditure (OPEX) respectively. And that’s because they’re using virtual worlds as an alternative to other, more costly (both in terms of the environment and money)  things— like long-distance flights for meetings.

The problem isn’t so much around the capabilities of existing metaverse platforms, but rather scale. Delivering these benefits to a large number of consumers and business users takes time, money, and investment. It also requires speed-to-market, channel management and human capital.

While I’d be the first to admit that the underlying technology is yet to fully mature, that problem is secondary to the overall lack of ecosystem maturity in the metaverse space.

The biggest barriers to adoption (and how to solve them)

It’s a little-discussed fact that, at the moment, most metaverse platforms don’t want to see the levels of adoption promised by sector evangelists. And that’s because they’re simply not ready.

Unlike the traditional Web, the metaverse is inherently computationally expensive to operate. Rendering virtual worlds and delivering a consistent, frictionless user experience requires a significant amount of computational power. While some platforms try to offload those demands to users, that isn’t an option for those looking to achieve massive levels of adoption, as it inherently limits the potential user base to those with beefy, expensive, and well-resourced computers.

For the longest time, this has presented the most formidable challenge to metaverse platforms seeking to expand. Fortunately, it’s a challenge that isn’t insurmountable—and, even without any external intervention or new innovation—has started to ease.

After several consecutive years of price spikes, GPU prices have started to decline, in part due to improvements in the semiconductor supply chain and the continued slump in cryptocurrency prices. Even if the platform doesn’t intend to operate its own infrastructure, it’ll nonetheless see cost improvements from cloud providers as the cost savings are passed on.

Additionally, metaverse platforms can take matters into their own hands and invest in a multi-cloud infrastructure strategy, boosting their capacity and enabling them to serve more users as a result. This approach, combined with new advances in streaming technology, will go a long way to expanding the reach of the metaverse and delivering a smooth, consistent, and jitter-free experience.

Likewise, content—as I’ve discussed previously—represents another major barrier to adoption. Perhaps the biggest. Consumers won’t embrace the metaverse without content, and content

creators (including brands) won’t invest capital into the metaverse without an audience. It’s a chickenand-egg dilemma.

With metaverse experiences easily costing millions to develop and maintain over their expected lifespan, it’s understandable that brands remain skeptical. Fortunately, this problem will resolve itself over time, in part due to a maturing landscape of developer tools and the adoption of generative AI, which promises to reduce or eliminate many of the costs associated with developing and refreshing content.

Another cause for hope is the ongoing decline in virtual reality headset prices. While not every metaverse experience requires a VR headset, many do—and so, in the minds of consumers, the concept of the metaverse is inextricably linked with VR. Prices for certain models—particularly Meta’s Quest and Quest Pro lineups—have already seen steep cuts to entice would-be users, and analysts expect average prices to decline between 2023 and 2028.

As such, this, combined with the adoption of streaming and greater infrastructure investments from platforms, will help reduce the upfront cost for consumers and inevitably play a role in making the metaverse a mainstream, widely-accepted technology.

Balancing optimism with patience

Despite the gloomy proclamations that the “metaverse hype bubble has popped,” I still believe that the metaverse has a bright future ahead of it.

I’m steadfastly convicted and convinced that the metaverse has value for brands, consumers, and enterprises alike. I truly believe it will in fact reach widespread adoption sooner, rather than later. But I’m also sensible enough to know that before it reaches its apex, the metaverse must first mature.

For the past few years, the metaverse sector has embraced the Silicon Valley adage of “building the airplane as you fly it.” This approach has inevitably limited its adoption to a core demographic of early adopters and idealistic true believers. Those who— unlike the rest of society—accept a certain level of “bumpiness” as the cost of being first.

These early adopters were essential in proving the value proposition of the metaverse. They demonstrated that virtual worlds can be fun and useful. With that knowledge, the metaverse ecosystem should feel emboldened as it starts refining and expanding. We have the minimum viable product (MVP). Now it’s time to build the real thing.

The future of the internet is 3D. But this will obviously take time. Likewise, building the infrastructure to handle hundreds of millions of users will take time (and money). We need better, more sophisticated developer tools that will let brands accelerate their metaverse time-to-market.

And it’s here where optimism—though welcome—needs to take a back seat to patience and planning.

CHANGEMAKING BEAUTY

The Body Shop Invites us to appreciate and celebrate the beauty of change

The bazaar team was recently invited to a wonderful evening celebrating and titled the “Beauty of Change”. Our wonderful hosts introduced us to the interesting topic that beauty could be changemaking. We got to know what changemaking beauty means, saw some videos of real changemaking stories, played games, experienced activism, had fun at the workshop and were audience to a powerful presentation on resilience in our lives by guest speaker Salma Al Hajjaj.

The Body Shop founder Dame Anita Roddick said, “Business shapes the world. It is capable of changing society in almost any way you can imagine.” That statement has become one of the driving forces behind The Body Shop, not just a cosmetics company but a business as a force for good. With a deep rooted commitment to ethical beauty ,sustainability, and social activism, the brand has been challenging the norms of the beauty industry since 1976.

From the iconic Shea Body Butter to the most loved Edelweiss Daily Serum Concentrate, each product enhances natural beauty and encourages harmony between body and soul to boost self-love.“

The Body Shop was founded in 1976 by the late entrepreneur Dame Anita Roddick. Starting with one small green shop in Brighton, England, selling hand mixed naturally inspired products with minimal packaging, Anita Roddick revolutionized the beauty industry. Ethically sourced ingredients, simple packaging, and empowering communication defined The Body Shop’s approach to beauty. Her vision of using beauty as a force for good made The Body Shop a brand that cared about more than just appearances. Today, her founding principles still guide them as they continue to grow globally, staying true to our heritage and legacy.

The Body Shop’s commitment to Community Fair Trade is at the heart of how they operate. They believe that by sourcing natural ingredients, accessories, and gifts from socially or economically marginalized communities around the world, they can create sustainable trading relationships that uplift and empower producers. Through long term trading partnerships, The Body Shop offers fair trading practices, foster independence, and provide access to the global market.

The brand has been an activist one, since inception they have campaigned on issues that are directly relevant to consumers and industry. From their first major campaign, “Save the Whale” in 1986, to fighting against animal testing in 1989, they have consistently used their platform to advocate for causes they deeply care about. In May 2022, The Body Shop launched Be seen Be Heard, their most ambitious global activism campaign which seeks to amplify youth voices in public life.

Simply, The Body Shop wants them to BE SEEN AND BE HEARD. This can be done, only if we support their development. In Kuwait The Body Shop collaborate with Injaz, local Nonprofit organization that inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. The Body Shop with Injaz want to spread awareness about importance of supporting young people and they want as many people as possible to commit to this support via the pledge. Everybody can support within their reach. Some of us can support by providing education, training, jobs or just simply listening what young generation is bothered with and what they would like to change.

That’s why we are launching pledge, where people give us virtual promise to support young people.

We’re also seeing The Body Shop make tangible and visible environmental changes. By collecting empty plastic and aluminum packaging in all stores in Kuwait for recycling they are making it easier for our customers to reduce their impact on the planet.

They’re empowering people to feel positive and proud about themselves, their bodies, and their futures. All of the Body Shop’s products are designed to promote self-love and confidence, especially among women and girls, who are most vulnerable.

In a world facing unprecedented challenges, The Body Shop remains at the forefront of ethically driven business, daring to be brave, active, outspoken, passionate, and kind. Their work is not done yet and they are committed to continuing on their path forward to their ideal of creating a better world, with the unwavering belief that they can make a difference one product at a time.

This is Changemaking beauty.

The Body Shop is the original changemaking beauty brand. Working hand-in-hand with nature. To protect, heal and regenerate. And change our world for good.

MICROPLASTICS ARE EVERYWHERE

You breathe in a credit card’s worth of microplastic every week

Everyday items like clothing, food packaging, cosmetics and car tires shed tiny particles of plastics, which in turn find their way into blood, baby poop, placentas, and breastmilk. According to recent research, plastics are even in the intricate, delicate tissue that makes up our lungs.

We breathe in about 16 bits of microplastic every hour, the equivalent of a credit card each week, according to a recent study published in the journal Physics of Fluids.

“People never thought that we could inhale microplastic, so the data is underestimated and the result is more severe,” says Saidul Islam, lead author of the paper and professor at the University of Technology Sydney.

Those plastics can get lodged into our airways and stay there over time, researchers say. Yet, despite its ubiquity in the environment and in our bodies, scientists don’t fully understand the longterm impacts on our health.

A 2019 report published in Environmental Science & Technology found that people in the U.S. consume about 39,000 to 52,000 particles of microplastics each year through food and water. That’s the size of two giraffes in a year and the whole of the Eiffel Tower in a lifetime. According to the United Nations Environmental Program, research on the more than 13,000 chemicals associated with plastics has found that at least 3,200 of those chemicals have been shown to be hazardous to human health. Lab experiments have shown that microplastics can cause damage to human cells.

Plastic producers, such as the British Plastics Federation, have pointed to international treaties that aim to “eliminate, restrict, reduce or eliminate” persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the environment to protect human health. In response to a recent Greenpeace report on toxic chemicals found in plastics, BPF responded that tackling plastic pollution “is essential but this cannot be done in isolation, without considering the impact of other key global environmental issues.”

Most studies tend to solely focus on the ingestion of microplastics, even though we are inhaling these plastics, too, Islam said. His study is among the first of its kind to quantify just how much we’re breathing in.

“How it is actually affecting our respiratory health is still unknown,” says Islam. Air pollution particles are known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year—it’s just unclear how much of that is due to microplastics.

Experts are starting to correlate microplastics with lung inflammation, shortness of breath and a higher risk of lung cancer. Research on rats suggests that when microplastics infiltrate lung cells, they can start to jumble up cell composition.

This suggests that exposure to microplastics can cause lung injury in humans, too.

Similar studies suggest that polypropylene plastics—rigid materials often found in disposable containers, automobile parts and even face masks used to prevent the spread of coronavirus—damage the mitochondria inside cells, which also causes lung inflammation.

“We need more studies on how plastic embeds in the lung surface, how it act on the lung surface, how its toxicity increases over time and how it creates the diseases,” Islam said, adding that his team plans to tackle these questions in the near future. “We’re only starting to understand how it transports in the airways.”

Islam ran experiments on three different microplastics shapes (spherical, tetrahedral and cylindrical) and sizes (1.6, 2.56, and 5.56 microns). He found that shape, size, and breathing patterns affected where the materials ended up.

Study subjects performing vigorous physical activity, and breathing heavily, breathed in more plastics in volume than when resting. But slower breathing, associated with sleeping, was associated with smaller particles lodging deep inside the lungs.

“Usually, most of the larger microplastics deposit in the nasal cavities and trachea, because the nasal cavity acts as a filter,” says Islam. “When you’re slow breathing, smaller particles are actually dropping in the deeper areas [of the respiratory system].” Islam added that plastic nanoparticles can then move into different organs in the body.

Research on microplastics and human health is still in its early days, said Mary Johnson, a principal research scientist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of

Public Health. But one thing is clear: each stage of the life cycle of plastic disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities.

“In general, vulnerable populations are at even greater risk of the negative health impacts from the production, use and degradation of plastics,” says Johnson. She cited a 2021 United Nations report on global plastics pollution that detailed Indigenous communities’ displacement for oil extraction, contamination of water supplies in low-income communities, health problems among predominantly Black communities living near oil refineries in the South, among other dangers faced by at-risk communities.

Another study published earlier this year in Annals of Global Health found fossil-fuel workers, plastic producers and communities living near plastics production and disposal sites experienced higher rates of certain cancers, respiratory disease, and pregnancy and birth complications.

Approximately 99% of plastic comes from chemicals sourced from fossil fuels, and throughout their lifecycle, plastic production generates approximately 3.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Many known human carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, such as so-called forever chemicals, are added to plastics during production to enhance performance. “Plastics are highly toxic,” says Islam. “Because when we are just inhaling the plastics, it’s not only the plastic, it could also actually carry some more toxic chemicals.”

The year of the Great Begonia Awakening

Everyday items like clothing, food packaging, cosmetics and car tires shed tiny particles of plastics, which in turn find their way into blood, baby poop, placentas, and breastmilk. According to recent research, plastics are even in the intricate, delicate tissue that makes up our lungs.

This year has been like the Great Begonia Awakening for The Garden Guy. First it was this year’s debut of Surefire Cherry Cordial begonia. Holy wow, it has been almost like a shrub and has persevered planted in the ground even though it is in direct assault from Tootie the bichon’s daily chase of the chipmunks.

Surefire Cherry Cordial begonias can take sun, and will reach up to 2 feet tall with an equal spread. They have won Top Performer Awards in over a dozen university locations from Florida to Minnesota and Oregon to Michigan.

Then I fell madly in love with the Solenia Rieger begonias. How in the world can they still be blooming in late September after the hottest, driest, most miserable summer in memory? I know you are thinking, you are still ticking, your Solenia begonias are still blooming, so life is good! You would be absolutely right.

All I have to do is walk out the back door and look at that glorious Solenia Apricot begonia with the rarest color in the world of gardening and I’ll admit to quickly falling in line to count my blessings instead of being a complainer.

ESSENTIAL READING

5 essential design books to read this fall

In many ways, I feel like the quantity and quality of design books has never been higher. The height of my “to-read” stacks is growing much, much faster than my “read” stack, and it seems that ratio will only get worse. There is a flood of new design books coming in the next few months that look to be important, informative, and engaging additions to any bookshelf. Collected here are five new books I’m enjoying, and know I’ll be returning to again and again.

Digital Design: A History by Stephen

(Princeton

Design: A New History is a classic survey of design history that is taught in many graphic design classes and sits on the shelves of countless graphic designers. This new book builds on Eskilson’s work and offers one of the first comprehensive surveys of digital design. Jumping through time, from early computation in the 19th century to 1990s web art to mobile apps, and across mediums from product design to data visualization to virtual reality, Eskilson tells the stories and provides the context for the digital landscape that shapes so much of our world today.

Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism by Carson Chan (MoMA)This publication, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name currently on view at the Museum of Modern Art, is a fascinating revisionist history of architecture that explores how designers and architects helped design America’s ecological movements. Richly illustrated and rigorously researched, the book is filled with both built and speculative projects that range from known designers like Buckminster Fuller, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Charles and Ray Eames, as well as experimental projects from architecture collective Ant Farm, visual explorations from NASA, and more.

Feminist Designer: On the Personal and the Political in Design edited by Alison Place (MIT Press)What is the relationship between feminist theory and design practice? This is the question that frames the essays, conversations, and case studies that designer and educator Alison Place has put together here. Moving beyond narrow questions of representation and inclusion, Feminist Designer instead asks how we design and why. In a work of theory that is also accessible, Place and her contributors make the case that feminist theory—and feminism more generally—provides an opportunity to interrogate the role of power, knowledge, care, community, and more in the designed systems and artifacts that surround us.

How Infrastructure Works: Inside the Systems That Shape Our World by Deb Chachra (Riverhead Books)For many people, infrastructure seems boring: We don’t often think about the systems that provide us with water, electricity, the internet, or the roads and tracks and sidewalks that let us move around the city. For Chachra, that’s the point: The definition of infrastructure, she writes, is all the

stuff we don’t have to think about. But in this wideranging, highly personal book, she wants us to think about them; she wants us to see infrastructure in new ways. As she traverses the globe looking at infrastructural systems big and small, global and local, Chachra reframes these systems not as materials, structures, and pipes but as a set of social agreements about how we live together. In making them visible, we can look for ways to improve them and, in turn, shape them for a more sustainable and equitable future.

An Atlas of Es Devlin by Andrea Lipps (Thames & Hudson)Es Devlin is perhaps the world’s most famous stage designer, having created the sets for tours by the biggest names in music, including

Beyoncé, Adele, and The Weeknd. She designed the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show set featuring Kendrick Lamar, and was even given her own episode of the Netflix design documentary series Abstract. For the first time, all this work and more is collected in a stunning monograph. The book reads like one of her stage sets; that is to say, it’s an experience. Featuring cutouts, foldouts, various paper types and sizes, mirrors, and other materials, the 900-plus-page book shows Devlin is more than a set designer for flashy pop stars but also an artist, a sculptor, a poet, and an activist.

HAVE A GREAT TRIP!

Travel agents share top strategies to avoid a bad experience

Travel disasters can come in nearly any form, turning your vacation into a giant headache in a hurry. For example, losing your luggage before or during a trip can cause delays and waste time. So can failing to plan your trip (or to plan it well), as can taking shortcuts to save money that actually cost you in the long run.

Other travel problems may involve the timing of your trip. Arriving too late for a cruise, missing your flight or a connection or forgetting to check your passport ahead of time can create some huge problems for your vacation that can cost time and money to resolve.

With that in mind, we asked travel agents from the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) for some of their best strategies to have an enjoyable trip and avoid the myriad issues and inconveniences that can occur. If you want to have the best possible vacation with limited hassle and stress, read on to hear what these travel professionals had to say.

Travel early before a cruise

When people are planning a river cruise or ocean voyage with a set departure date, some like to leave things to chance and fly into their port city the morning of their departure. But, what happens when your flight is canceled or delayed? You can easily miss your cruise, and no, your vessel is unlikely to wait for you or anyone else.

That’s why cruise planner Jen Rosa says you should always leave extra time in your plan just in case something goes wrong. Specifically, Rosa suggests flying into your departure city two days in advance if possible.

“If you can’t do it two days before, at the very least fly in one day before,” she said.

Track your own bags

Lost luggage can be a nightmare for travelers, but it’s not that uncommon at all. That’s why Pamela Fierro of Coastwise Travel recommends managing the risks of losing your luggage and being proactive about tracking your bags.

Fierro recommends using tracking devices, such as an Apple AirTag or Tile, in your luggage, both in checked and carry-on bags.

“If your luggage goes missing, whether via airline mishandling, theft or even just forgetfulness, you’ll be able to determine its exact location,” she said.

While not always the case, knowing where your bags are can help you retrieve them more quickly.

Book flights directly with airlines

Booking airfare through third-party sites like Expedia and Priceline can become a major hassle, especially in instances where your flight is delayed or rescheduled or you need to rebook on different dates. After all, third-party companies and online

travel agencies (OTAs) typically do not have the same level of customer service or the same flexible rebooking policies as some airlines do.

Check your passport expiration date regularly

Imagine you booked a dream trip that’s a few weeks out from departure and you suddenly find out your passport expires right before or after you’re scheduled to leave. With passport delays still prevalent and even renewals taking up to 12 or 15 weeks right now, you would be stuck trying to figure out a solution to your problem — or simply stuck at home — with little time to spare.

That’s one of the reasons travel agent Thomas Carpenter of Huckleberry Travel recommends checking the date of your passport regularly and always knowing how much time you have left.

“If you don’t have at least six months’ validity from the date of your return home, and two blank pages, you might not be able to travel,” he said.

Buy travel insurance

Carpenter also adds that you should purchase a

comprehensive travel insurance plan, and that a quality travel insurance policy can protect against a lot more than unexpected cancellations.

The agent says the policies he recommends to clients have coverage for emergency medical coverage, medical evacuation, lost and stolen luggage or personal effects, trip interruption, trip delays and much more.

Have a professional in your corner

Finally, travel agent Cyndi Williams of Wanderlust Campus says that taking the time to plan well for a trip is the most important thing you can do to avoid something going wrong. While you can always plan each aspect of your vacation your own, she adds that using a certified travel adviser can help with planning, the servicing of a reservation and even being on standby to help resolve issues that pop up during a trip.

A DISH OF KINDNESS

Why restaurants are putting kindness and leadership on the menu

It was a simple but strange request at a business conference. Still, the speakers stepped toward each other, arms outstretched, and embraced. The crowd applauded as the two women, each with a long list of professional accolades, smiled, waved, and exited stage left. It was just the first of many onstage hugs.

This was the Welcome Conference, a one-day event for people in the hospitality business. It’s put on by Will Guidara, a former co-owner and general manager of Eleven Madison Park, the New York City restaurant named best in the world under his watch. Guidara’s book, Unreasonable Hospitality, came out in October 2022, and he’s spent the past year espousing its message: There’s remarkable power in giving people more than they expect.

The day feels like a manifestation of that desire, largely because it hits you in the face with the unexpected. As the lights lowered that morning at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, a gospel choir slowly took the stage, singing “welcome back” on repeat, their voices climbing to an impressive crescendo before a drum line stepped out of the wings and joined in. It was a lot for 10 o’clock on a rainy Monday morning.

That was the point.

I knew I was supposed to leave feeling inspired. I didn’t expect it to feel so . . . nice.

I probably should have. Guidara runs a consultancy called Thank You. His previous hospitality company, Make it Nice, once opened a restaurant called Made Nice. It would’ve been unreasonable for the day’s featured speakers not to hug. The point of the day was to energize and inspire an audience of 880, most of them leaders and employers in the restaurant business, with tales of simply being kind and caring—and hospitable.

That’s a lot of warm and fuzzy for an industry that’s been through a lot.

Restaurateur Danny Meyer released his hospitality book, Setting the Table, in 2006. Then, the general public’s notion of restaurants skewed more band-of-misfits-in-the-kitchen, as immortalized by Anthony Bourdain. Later came Mario Batali and #MeToo, and numerous stories of abuse in kitchens that would take down prominent chefs and business owners. Restaurant award shows were canceled and revamped, and powerful food media outlets were forced to look long and hard in the mirror of culpability.

Then a global pandemic would disrupt and define the restaurant business for years. Restaurants closed. Aid was hard to come by. The industry stepped in to take care of its own.

In the first session of the day, Meherwan and Molly Irani, a married chef-restaurateur team from Chai Pani in Asheville, North Carolina, talked about how they thoughtfully closed a restaurant, reorganizing an agonizing list of to-dos around the interest and well-being of their staff.

Later, chef Chris Shepherd detailed how his Southern Smoke Foundation, built as a side project, distributed millions of dollars in aid to people working in food and beverage. Its support has helped workers through the pandemic, through disasters including the recent wildfires in Maui, and through mental health challenges that can come with a life of giving to others. Other presenters divulged stories of abuse, HIV diagnosis, poverty, drug dealing, mental illness, and other topics previously prohibited in polite conversation.

There was a sense that past mistakes, pressure, and reality had broken the industry wide open. Enter Guidara and his brand of unreasonable hospitality—heir apparent to the legacy of being nice—inspiring a certain type of leader.

After lunch, Harvard lecturer Tal Ben-Shahar spent a lot of slides detailing exactly how stress is catastrophic to success. With no breaks, no selfcare, we get no relief. With no relief comes burnout. Ben-Shahar is a happiness expert with eight books on the topic; in 2022 he launched a master’s degree program in happiness studies.

The worst leaders are those who give freely to others above all else. I could sense the room full of hospitalitarians nervously looking down at their hands. Then, redemption: The happiest and most effective leaders give a lot, too, Ben-Shahar said. They give to others, but they also make time to give back to themselves. There was a collective sigh of relief.

The day felt less like a conference and more like a show. We laughed watching a video produced by Eli Sussman, creator of the hilarious restaurant insider meme account @thesussmans. In a mock “86 News” broadcast, he poked fun at all the things restaurant people love to hate: chef Rene Redzepi and his Copenhagen restaurant Noma; tweezer food; and natural wine. “86” is its own inside joke, restaurant lingo for taking something off the menu.

The Welcome Conference has run for almost a decade, save for a pandemic-induced two-year break starting in 2020. What started as a way to gather restaurateurs and other front-of-house staff has evolved to include leaders and lessons from other industries. But at its core, the Welcome Conference is a restaurant conference for restaurant people.

In a speech titled, “How bad do you want it?” the day’s best, chef Kwame Onwuachi, detailed how he rose from a kid selling candy to strangers on the New York City subway to opening Tatiana, his restaurant that’s a love letter to New York. Tatiana was recently named number one in the city by New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells.

Onwuachi recalled his childhood spent in a one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx, and his days spent battling racism in the dish pit of a restaurant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His story reminded all of us how these messages of kindness and acceptance from the top eventually filter through the ranks and into the dining room.

“I believe I have the most diverse fine-dining restaurant in New York City,” Onwuachi said. It’s a place, he said, where many diners and staff feel important, maybe for the first time.

A NEW USEFUL TOOL

Why Napkin is a great app for gathering and exploring your ideas

Napkin is an intriguing service for jotting down quick ideas or notes and linking them together. In this post, I’m sharing what it’s for, how it works, how it’s different from other services, what its limitations are, and some useful alternatives.

What to use it for

• Gather ideas for a new project a little bite at a time rather than feeling like you have to fill up a full note or outline.

• Collect quotes, phrases, or key stats as they come to you to gradually build up a collection.

• Draft an X/Twitter thread, piece by piece.

• Create a parking lot for idea seeds you don’t have time to explore right now but you don’t want to forget.

How it works

Type out a sentence or two into a little onscreen box. It’s like a digital napkin for scrawling thoughts. Each thought or idea gets its own napkin. If you want to add a tag to link an idea with others, you can.

5 views for your notes

When you’ve jotted down a bunch of thoughts, you can view them in multiple ways.

1. On a visual canvas as a thought swarm.

2. Organized in neat rows as a thought list.

3. As a tag cloud spotlighting all the tags you’ve used.

4. Using the search/filter box to surface notes with a particular word or phrase.

5. As part of a stack of cards that you can organize in whatever order you’d like and then export to edit elsewhere, or print: I actually drafted this post by using the Stack feature; I jotted down key points in Napkin, dragged those points into a stack, then exported that to edit in iA Writer, the most streamlined app for writing and editing.

How Napkin is different

Napkin is not a full-fledged note-taking service. It doesn’t have all the features of services like Evernote, Apple Notes, OneNote, or other traditional note-taking tools. It’s not a replacement for any of those nor is it a substitute for Roam, Obsidian, Mem.ai, or other new backlinkbased note-taking services. It is useful for writers, though, who are assembling ideas that will end up in a Medium post, X/Twitter thread, or some other published piece. That’s the target group the founders have been focusing on.

• Napkin is designed for jotting down individual thoughts. Think smaller bits of ideas—each Napkin is a quick Tweet-length thought.

• Organized visually, not in folders. Napkins are

visible on a floating visual canvas so you can see how thoughts are connected. Text only. While other note-taking tools are designed to be digital file cabinets, housing anything and everything from multimedia to file attachments, Napkin is focused on simple text.

• Offering less, not more.  Napkin’s cofounders, Fabian Wittel and David Felsmann, are intent on building an alternative to overwhelming notes services and a retreat from social media overload. “We think everyone could be way more creative and inspired if they had a beautiful and calm space to connect and focus the greatest ideas they come across,” Wittel and Felsmann said in reply to one of my recent email queries.

Limitations

• It’s short input only, and not designed to be used for editing or formatting. You’ll need a separate digital spot for fuller notes.

• It’s still a raw service, with features gradually being added.

• You can’t include visuals or attachments with your notes, just simple text.

• It’s not yet available on all platforms. Pricing: After a free beta period, pricing is now $10/month or $96/year. You can use code WONDERTOOLS for a free month of the monthly

or yearly plan. Students and educators can email team@napkin.one for 50% off.

Alternatives

• Walling is a more complex, more powerful visual notes tool that has a broader range of features.

• Scrintal is a new service I’m testing. It has a similar note-by-note simple visual interface. (Also early-stage.)

• Padlet isn’t designed as a thought-collection tool per se, but it can be used that way. It has the added benefit of enabling you to add various kinds of multimedia.

• Trello can also be handy for jotting down quick ideas on cards and moving them around on an idea board, though it’s designed for managing projects.

• Milanote lets you create a visual pinboard with ideas, images, links, files, and whatever else you want to see on a visual digital board.

• Scrivener has a note-card view like Napkin’s, along with a lot of additional features for organizing and managing big writing projects.

ON THE ANT FARM

What we can learn from ants about reframing anxiety

The revered poet Robert Frost made no secret of his likes and dislikes.  Discerning readers have no trouble recognizing that he favored the road less traveled, that he did not love a wall, and that he regarded systems with suspicion bordering on contempt. Although he left this world more than six decades ago, his verses echo with tones of prophecy when we contemplate how inescapably systematized our world continues to become.

For better or worse, many businesses today are broken into semi-autonomous departments. Schools have increasingly designed curricula with a fixation on STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. On the one hand, it’s reassuring to know that our young people will be competent in core skills. But some educators worry that we are simultaneously crushing creativity. As with so many things, we struggle to strike a healthy balance.

So should we share Frost’s disdain for the departmentalism of ants? Or can we find admirable characteristics that offset their hyper-structured nature?

Perhaps our six-legged friends do indeed have redeeming qualities to warrant this week’s entry into the Ethical Lexicon:

Myrmecophilous (myr·me·coph·i·lous/ ˌmərmə-ˈkä-fə-ləs) noun

Fond of, associated with, or benefited by ants

If you can’t imagine any practical application of this word, Apoorva Nagarwould likely disagree with you. A physicist at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, he was fascinated to discover that traveling ants maintain constant speed even when their numbers swell along the ant superhighway. That means, in dramatic contrast to human commuters, ant traffic carries on unhindered even during rush hour.

Nagar suggests three reasons why ants don’t bottleneck, despite increased traffic flow:

1. Ants don’t have egos. They don’t take it personally when other ants cut them off, and they don’t feel the need to show off or prove they’re Number One.

2. Ants don’t mind bumps and scrapes. For humans, even the purely cosmetic damage from a fender-bender requires calling 911, accident reports, and insurance claims. But ants just keep moving forward, unconcerned with incidental rattles and shakes.

3. Ants focus more intently under pressure. As traffic thickens, they lean in, hold their speed steady, and make fewer twists and turns.

Becoming aware of negative thoughts

How do you act when traffic slows to a crawl? Do you start fuming, muttering, cursing, and banging the steering wheel? Do you refuse to let another car into the space in front of you and constantly grumble that the other lanes are advancing faster than your own?

Do you start trying to find ways to make the time seem less wasted, searching for a different song or show on the radio, scrolling through your messages, or contemplating alternative routes that might save you a minute or two getting to your destination? Are you then surprised to notice that a large gap has opened up in front of you while your mind has drifted elsewhere?

Most important, can you think of times when these behaviors spill over into other areas of your personal and professional life?

Personal ego lies at the heart of most bad choices. The sad irony is that our fear of looking bad makes us act badly. Our concern over appearing weak makes us vulnerable, and our dismay over being overlooked makes us seem desperate for attention. Even worse, when we call out the errors or shortcomings of others to build ourselves up, we ensure that others will eagerly jump all over us the next time we take a false step.

Re-picture this Imagine that you’re attending a cocktail party. You get your drink and start looking for an opening to mingle when someone shoves into you from behind. You’re thrown off-balance, and your drink sloshes out of your glass and all over your shoes. Moreover, the shove felt intentional rather than accidental. You whip around ready to confront this oaf, this boor, this miscreant who has violated your personal space.

Instead, you are met by the smiling face of your college roommate, a dear friend you haven’t seen in 15 years. In an instant, your anger and displeasure

evaporate. You reframe the shove as a playful gesture from a long-lost soulmate. The offense is instantly forgotten.

Consider that the shove remains the same shove, your glass is still empty, and your shoes are still wet. But none of that matters because your ego is no longer in play. Nothing has changed; yet everything has changed. And that demonstrates how much power we have over our own emotions and reactions.

We should have at least as much self-control as ants, shouldn’t we? They don’t care if other ants bump into them. They also respond to tension not by looking to get out, but rather by leaning in. So why can’t we act more like ants?

The truth is, we can. Anxiety and excitement manifest through exactly the same physical symptoms: accelerated heart rate, perspiration, and shallow breathing. One response is to try slowing our breathing and calming our thoughts. Another is to reframe the situation by changing our inner narrative.

Instead of looking for reasons to be offended, look for opportunities to create new bonds. Instead of focusing on fear of the unknown, focus on eagerness for a new experience. Simply telling yourself that you are excited to face a new challenge or adventure can rewire your brain and rechannel paralyzing fear into invigorating enthusiasm. Would you ever have imagined learning all this from ants? You gotta love ‘em.

WHY DID THE CHICKEN GO HOME?

The smart home of the future is here—and it’s for chickens

Nevertheless, cofounders AJ Forsythe and Jordan Barnes don’t seem to be kidding. To design their coop, in fact, they tapped Bould Design, the San Francisco industrial design firm known for work for Nest, Roku, and a host of tech startups. And the Coop pitch escalates quickly from making a product for any aspiring chicken owner to disrupting the food-industrial complex. Right now, about 3% of households raise chickens, chief marketing officer Barnes says, but the Coop is meant to both impress home-poultry veterans and especially to ease the process for first-timers—and thus, “democratize chickens.” Silly as that phrase may be, more than half of Coop’s preorders are from newbies, Barnes says, and “if one in five households had backyard chickens, we could completely eliminate egg-laying Big Poultry in the U.S.”

The pair have a track record. Forsythe’s first startup was of the born-in-a-dorm variety: In around 2011, as a student at Cal Poly, he fixed his own broken mobile phone, started doing the same for other students, and gradually built that into a repair service called iCracked. Post-college, he and his iCracked cofounder headed for San Francisco, landing backing from Y Combinator and scaling the service into a multimillion dollar company. (Along the way, Barnes, whom he’d known since high school, joined and oversaw some of its international expansion.) In 2019, iCracked was acquired by Squaretrade, a subsidiary of Allstate that sells consumer-device protection plans. Forsythe stayed on for a couple of years but was in a position to be choosy about his next project.

He—and Barnes—chose chickens. This too traces back to Forsythe’s college days: As a student, he acquired some chickens, built his own coop, and has continued the practice of raising them. He was vacationing when a 2021 ice storm threatened the chickens in his Austin backyard, and he had to rush home to make sure they were okay. He’d tinkered with coop design for years, but this incident made him and Barnes consider the possibility of a techforward coop that would appeal to the “chicken curious”—a plug-and-play product that would make it possible for anyone with a backyard to raise a few chickens (and enjoy their eggs). While they were well in motion when soaring egg prices became front-page news, that certainly boosted interest.

This translated to a host of features, many connected to and controlled via a smartphone app: both an interior and exterior camera; an automated

hatch door that shuts when all the chickens have come inside at dusk, and opens at sunrise; motion detectors; and photon torpedoes for repelling predators.

If you made a list of things that need to be redesigned and updated for the smart-tech era, it might take you a while to get to the chicken coop. But, yes, a startup called Coop is currently delivering “early bird” orders for its $2,500 “smart coop,” a sleek object tricked out with technology for backyard farmers and their hens. And yes, Coop recognizes there’s something slightly absurd-sounding about the enterprise: “We spent more than 10,000 hours designing our chicken coop,” its site announces. “Which is hilarious.” by popular pet-house maker Omlet), but had more of an “architectural” vibe, like a guest house with a crisp, vaguely New Urbanist vibe. “We wanted something,” says Bould, “that made a statement.” That said, the design also had to be chickencentered. That meant a lot of back and forth about configuring the space, working out roosting-bar height and shape, figuring out the optimum light admission, and so on, says Bould partner Jamie Perin, all focused on “making sure the chickens felt comfortable where they could lay their eggs.”

Okay, just kidding on that last one, but apparently the top cause of chicken-quitting is the birds being killed by other animals. Not much can be done about a midday hawk attack, but chickens are most vulnerable at night (which is why they naturally head back to the coop as the sun fades). This informed Coop’s construction, involving, the company says, the same plastic process used for Yeti coolers, plus a welded steel frame. Similar consideration was given to balancing warmth and ventilation, and removable poop trays for quick cleanup.

While Coop’s goal has been described as making “the Tesla of chicken homes,” it was obviously an unusual assignment for Fred Bould and his firm. As he explains, there was no initial prototype, so his team built on Forsythe and Jordan’s functional parameters with research into coop forms, finding that there were actually some surprisingly “bespoke” chicken homes out there. The goal became creating something that built on prefab options (such as those designed

As this process played out, Coop’s exploration of backyard-chicken culture led it to start a side service of on-demand coop maintenance—by what it calls, in Dad joke fashion, “chicken tenders”— now available in multiple cities. (This has aided the coop-design process, the Coop founders say, but they remain focused on the hardware product.)

The next phase is learning from the Coop units currently being shipped to those early-bird buyers. It will be a significant test. Clearly the first hurdle is proving, in Perin’s words, that this is “something you want in your backyard.” And then, it has to work.

INTRODUCING THE NEW WESTINGHOUSE “BAMBOO SERIES”

Your kitchen appliances are going Nordic

In a bold attempt to revolutionize home kitchen appliances, WESTINGHOUSE introduced the ‘Bamboo Series’ that uses Natural bamboo elements to add a touch of art, elegance and serious Nordic vibes to your kitchen. The natural and durable material is also unique and every piece has its own distinctive wood grain. We absolutely love it when two opposing elements combine; the elevated aesthetic and the hi-grade technical components to create something new and completely unexpected. The line currently includes a blender, kettle and toaster.

128

Table blender

This is the perfect time to be adding a blender to your arsenal. With winter slowly creeping along, we’ve been making more smoothies to up our vitamin and fiber intake. The powerful 1000W motor with high performance stainless-steel blades can blend it all. It boasts four built-in programs to set precise time and blending speed for mixing, chopping, ice-crushing and auto cleaning. The pulse function and classic design of toggle switch provides variable speed, making it ideal for crushing frozen fruit, ice cubes, soups, smoothies, milkshakes, cocktails, sauces and more. And you don’t have to settle for just one smoothie, the 1.75L glass jar is thick and can stand for high power of bursting.

Electric Kettle

We still haven’t given up our warm drinks though, and the bamboo kettle from Westinghouse is just oh so cute! This kettle is perfectly suited for family use has a cool touch double wall design with food-grade 304 stainless steel interior against scalding. Advanced British STRIX controller activates auto shut off function and dry boil cut-off protection; safe and reliable to use. And you will always be able to make the perfect drink because of the digital display which shows real-time water temperature inside the kettle.

Toaster

If you’ve never owned a toaster, then you’re life is sorely missing one of the greatest inventions ever. Nothing beats freshly toasted bread topped with cream and jam. The Westinghouse toaster has 2 extra-long slots designed to suit for various bread types. The toaster includes Bagel, Defrost, Reheat and Cancel functions for simple use and complete control. Classic design of toggle switch provides variable browning control from lightly golden to deep dark toasted slice. The self-centering function ensures the bread perfectly aligned at the center for toasting evenly every time. We love the built-in bun warmer too. And it is easily to clean because all the bread crumbs are collected by a removable stainless steel crumb tray for easy cleaning.

WE CAN HOPE

Researchers discover possible new cause for Alzheimer’s disease

Scientists at Oregon Health and Science University have made a development that could lead to a greater understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

They discovered a new cause for the diseases that impact cognitive functioning.

“We’ve missed a major form of cell death in Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia,” senior author of the study Dr. Stephen Back told OHSU in a news release. “We hadn’t been giving much attention to microglia as vulnerable cells, and white matter injury in the brain has received relatively little attention.”

The researchers found that ferroptosis, a type of cell death that results from a buildup of iron in cells, destroys a form of cell involved in the brain’s immune response called microglia cells. This occurs in Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia cases.

Essentially, the degeneration of the microglia may be a factor in furthering cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia patients.

The study, in which researchers studied postmortem human brain tissue from dementia patients, was published in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Neurology.

Microglia deteriorates in the Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia patient’s white matter of the brain, scientists found.

According to Medical News Today, microglia are native brain cells that normally act to remove cellular waste as part of your body’s immune system.

Microglia cleans up debris when myelin is damaged. Myelin acts as an insulator and protective covering for your brain’s nerve fibers, according to OHSU.

However, researchers found that microglia are demolished while getting rid of myelin, which is heavily rich in iron. This sabotage happens through a form of cell death named ferroptosis.

The chain of events of deteriorating microglia seems to play a role in advancing cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, according to Back.

Back said that over time, multiple instances of low blood flow and oxygen to the brain due to acute strokes or chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes may contribute to the underlying cause that begins the cycle of cognitive decline.

The new research offers a glimmer of hope for scientists, who hope to create improved technologies to slow the process of dementia.

“If iron toxicity is responsible for cell death and negative impact, myelin repair targeted therapies of this pathway could impact how we treat Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia,” Mercyhealth Memory Clinic medical director Dr. Amarish Davé, who was not involved in the study, told Medical News Today.

Iron toxicity in the brain is well known and typically from genetic dysfunction. This paper identifies potential iron toxicity from cell death and the debris that accumulates.”

“Further work needs to be done, but drugs that target microglial function may be a useful avenue for future therapeutic approaches to prevent neurodegeneration,” Providence Saint John’s Health Center neurologist Dr. Santosh Kesari told Medical News Today.

Back said in a news release he anticipates pharmaceutical companies will use his study’s findings to create compounds aimed at lessening the brain’s microglial degeneration.

“That’s where the field will go next,” he said. “A discovery like ours will stimulate a lot of excitement in the pharmaceutical industry to develop therapeutically important compounds.”

LIBRA

SEP 23 – OCT 22

The solar eclipse this month is happening in your sign and this means a major new beginning for you. You’ll need to consider your personal alignment and authenticity with whatever situation you’re dealing with. A significant ending that’s been in the works for the past 18 months is finally starting to settle.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22

One of the manifestations of deep inner work is the need to integrate what may feel like disparate parts of your whole being. This month ahead is quite reflective and you’re invited to pay closer attention to your health. This can look like tending to your physical wellness but also taking care of your mental, emotional and spiritual health as well. Major things are wrapping up in your significant relationships. Turn the focus on you!

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

You may feel called to join new community spaces where you can meet people and contribute your gifts. Now more than ever it feels important that you are an essential part of movements that you care about. You’re starting to move away from any work-oriented values and beliefs that were making you unwell before.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19

A potent purging and simultaneous blossoming is transpiring in your career and overall contemplations of your life path. You’ve had some time to get to know what makes you tick, what brings you joy and what facilitates your creative flow. Don’t underestimate the importance of your excitement when it comes to your choices.

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18

Get obsessed with learning something new that will change some of your fundamental beliefs. It can be a very niche subject, as per your usual, but its domino effect on the way you see the world can be life-altering. It’s exciting for the most part—and also a bit unnerving—to change your mind about things you thought were a stable reality for you

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19

Avoiding something doesn’t make it go away. In fact, sometimes when you skirt around an important issue, things become a bigger deal than they are. Avoidance can be a useful strategy only if you give your presence to whatever you’re avoiding later. Sometimes the most important thing in life is to show up—even if you feel like you can’t or don’t know how to.

ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19

You’re at a turning point when it comes to the future of your most important relationships. The task is to understand what needs to die versus what you need to nourish so it can usher in a new birth. This requires your emotional intelligence and astute self-awareness to navigate. Make sure you have the resources you need to support yourself as you move through relationship changes.

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20

Lately, you may feel like a whole different person—even like you’re inhabiting a different body. Your health has been a major focus for you and the month ahead is no different. The theme is about creating space when it comes to your daily habits so you can bring in more of what you truly need.

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21

Now’s the time to get into a creative headspace as this can help you immensely in getting through your days and finishing your overdue work. A yearning for inspiration can do wonders for your mental health. If you’re not in the mood, get yourself in the mood. Just remember not to be attached to the outcome.

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

Something related to your close relationships could be going through pivotal moments of change this month ahead. It’s just the beginning, so don’t jump to conclusions about worst-case scenarios. Some of the transformations are critical for your healing and growth—especially when it comes to your sense of belonging so you can better cultivate the kinds of relationships you want more in life.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22

As you navigate a major ending and turning point in your work and overall life direction, you will become more sensitive to the dynamics of your daily surroundings. You may notice how things are starting to change around you. Or perhaps it’s more that you’re outgrowing familiar spaces and you want to move through a different kind of vibe and crowd. Spice up your life and change things around from your usual.

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22

Do you generally feel a better sense of your place in the world, simply because you’re firmly grounded in your personal beliefs, values and principles? This state of being is not a static one, either, as humans are often in flux. If you haven’t yet, embark on a new journey that will teach you a new frame of perspective. Doing so will help you navigate acquiring the resources you need and will assist you in establishing the boundaries required to live your life well. Source: wisehoroscope.org
