M

ajor League Baseball in the 60s was baseball at its best and America was enjoying the greatest of times. As a young boy growing up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the spring training camp of the New York Yankees in the 60s was one of the most exciting times of my life. This was true Americana at its best. My friends and I were young Little League ball players sitting in the bleachers with the wonderful aroma of freshly cut grass, the smell of pipe tobacco and then the roar of the crowd as our Yankees took the field in their bright white and blue pin stripes. You could tell who the villains and bad guys were that day, the Boston Red Sox. In their drab grey uniforms they hit the diamond for warm ups before the game began. My buddies and I pointed to our favorite players and called out their names with vigor…… Maris, Mantle, Tresh, Yogi, Howard, Blanchard, Boyer, and Moose Skowron. We poked fun at a guy named Peppitone with his long hair and sideburns. Then we screamed at the top of our lungs, “You loser Sox, Yastremski, Conigliaro, Lonborg, Scott and the rest of you bums!!!”

Houston has great baseball whether it is the local Little League, Pony League, or the college teams like the San Jacinto Gators, the University of Houston Cougars and the Rice Owls. We also now have the new semi-pro team in Sugarland, rightly called the Skeeters. I recently enjoyed getting to keep score in the press box for a local Little League game. I believe, just like my friend, a professional fishing guide says, “The best time to go to a baseball game is anytime you can”.

“Some things never change, like hot dogs loaded with mustard, cokes and a great day at the ball park.” Before we knew it the National Anthem began and we all jumped to attention, proud to be wearing our Causeway Lumber flannel grey uniforms and our green ball caps which we placed over our hearts, just like the pros, while the Star Spangled Banner played. With perfect timing and just before Whitey Ford tossed the first pitch to one of the “Boston Bums”, my dad came up the stairs of the bleachers loaded down with 25 cent hot dogs and 10 cent Coca Colas. Needless to say we all ended up with mustard all over our faces and our precious uniforms. Hot dogs never taste better than at the baseball park in the summer. We ate, yelled, ran up and down the bleachers, got sunburned, shagged a foul ball, and played catch with it. At game’s end my dad introduced us to baseball greats, Mr. Rizzuto and a guy named Pee Wee Reese. The final score was Yanks 4 – Sox 2 and a lifetime memory. So, even today, I still look for a reason to head for Minute Maid Park and watch the Astros in a duel. Win or lose, it does not matter because I have a love for the game and those $8 hot dogs and a $7 brew or two.

Beating the Heat

Summer is here! The activities of summer can be hard on hair color! According to stylist Bruce Grossman, the best thing to do for outdoor activities is to keep you hair covered with a hat. “When that isn’t feasible, there are products that promote UVA and UVB protectors. I would use shampoo, conditioner, and styling products with these protectors,” says Grossman. It requires all of the products so that the protectors are layered on the hair. Every major product line will clearly identify these qualities, and yes, even some hair sprays. One of the best lines for this is L’Oreal Kerastase. There is even oil for sun and water exposure. This will also protect the condition of your hair. You may want to even try the Philip Swimcap, Straight Hair and Preem Cream. Bruce Grossman is at Michaelyndon Salon and can be reached at 713-818-3303.

Channel 2 News Anchor Lauren Freeman knows a little something about make-up. After all she has to apply and re-apply make-up multiple times a day to be camera ready. And, it just so happens that her husband plastic surgeon, Dr Forrest Roth knows a little something about protecting your skin. So together, they’ve handpicked and personally used every product that they sell in their West Avenue boutique, Cameo. Their philosophy is to offer mineral make-up (Glo) and prescription skin care (Skin Ceuticals) products that prevent, protect and correct the skin without chemical fillers and other harmful ingredients found in many over the counter products. For example, Skin Ceuticals sunscreens contains Zinc Oxide, the only UV filter spanning the full UVA/UVB spectrum, without the harmful parabans. Furthermore, many of the Skin Ceuticals products also contain natural ingredients, such as plankton extract, that enhance their products. To find out more visit www.cameowestave.com

All-new Cadillac XTS Redefines Full-size Luxury

T

he latest rendition of art and science is arriving at Cadillac dealerships across the U.S. and none too soon. Although America’s luxury icon has done well with its much ballyhooed CTS midsize sedan, it was lacking the bookends to complete the lineup, namely a compact and a full-size. Enter the XTS, the all-new full-size replacement for both the STS and the DTS. At first blush, there is no doubt that this fits into the Cadillac portfolio with its easily recognizable egg crate grille, sharp edges and vertical headlights. But its

exterior size is smaller than of either of the outgoing models. As for interior space, the XTS gets high marks for minimizing the thickness of components to allow more room for occupants. Nineties’ interiors are a thing of the past with this new Caddy starting with the all-new CUE driver interface. CUE stands for Cadillac User Experience and features several industry firsts, including capacitive-touch control with proximity sensing, haptic feedback, gesture recognition and natural voice recognition. Capacitive touch is the technology featured on many tablets and smartphones. Available exclusively on the XTS, is a 12.3-inch reconfigurable instrument cluster. Also, as part of the customer experience, each 2013 Cadillac XTS buyer will receive an iPad with their new car.

“When it comes to trunk space, the XTS is in a league of its own.”

And when it comes to trunk space, the XTS is in a league of its own, with 18 cubic feet, exceeding both midsize and full-size competitors – more than Audi A6 and A8L, BMW 5 and 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz Eand S-Class. For XTS customers, the cargo advantage means room for five or more suitcases or four of those supersized golf bags replete with built-in ice makers. The XTS comes in Luxury, Premium and Platinum (shown) trim levels. Platinum Collection models feature a fully wrapped leather interior with microfiber sueded headliner, as well as premium wood trim on the steering wheel, console, center stack, instrument panel and door panels. Seating trim is offered with Soleil Keisel surfaces or premium Opus full leather – both with perforated detailing. Heated and ventilated seats are also offered. Under the hood is a direct injection 3.6-liter, 304 horsepower V-6 that powers a fulltime all-wheel drive system through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The combination gets a respectable 17 mpg-city and 28-highway. XTS is just what the doctor ordered for Cadillac and couldn’t arrive at a better time. Pricing starts at $48,690 for the Luxury model.

The Truth About Texans Sabinal, Texas

I

had to call my best friend Kevin to tell him about my weekend at the Sabinal Wild Hog Festival. It was a huge party for such a small town. They had over 30 food booths, an equal number of craft booths and a circus carnival for the young ones that featured bungee trampolines, a train, ponies and countless other things. But the most impressive thing to me was the fact that the number of people attending was many times the population of the entire town. The highlight of the festival was the wild hog bagging competition. In a ring about 75 feet in diameter, two people sat on a table in the center while a hog was let in. Once the doors closed on the chute behind the hog, the competition was on. At the sound of a whistle, the clock would start and the two people would chase after the hog until one of them caught it. Once the hog was caught and controlled, one member of the team would race back to the table to pick up a large burlap sack. The goal was then to stuff the hog into the sack and drag the bag, with the hog inside, across a line. The team that does it in the shortest amount of time wins. There were definitely team loyalties. Many in the crowd wore t-shirts bearing the name of the hog catching school they attended (Yes, they take it so seriously they have schools for it). As you might imagine, there was plenty of blood, sweat and tears, both porcine and human. Some teams took well over a minute to get the job done. In several contests, the hog won as time expired before he could be caught. But there were also the great performances—the best times often in the 17-second range. And there were a few surprises. In the open category (mostly adult male teams) the hogs were the largest and most athletic. Grown men were sometimes helped off the field, bloody and beaten. Some were embarrassed by their lack of ability to even catch the hogs. Others were able to make the catch but then

20

Bay Area Houston Magazine | JULY 2012

“You Texas boys sure have a strange notion of what is fun.” struggled in vain trying to stuff the massive animal into the sack. But two 15-year-old girls made it look easy as they took down the hog like linebackers on a scrambling quarterback, stuffed him into the bag and dragged him across the line—in 15 seconds. Needless to say, there were lots of embarrassed adult men. It was such a hoot, I had to tell Kevin about it. We had talked once about doing the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona but he opted out saying he was sure that if I was determined to achieve death by livestock we could find a bull to aggravate a lot closer to home. I knew he’d appreciate this. He contemplated my news and after his usual moment of silence he replied, “You Texas boys sure have a strange notion of what is fun.” Although he lives in Indiana, Kevin spends a lot of time in Texas and he loves it here. But there are still many things about us Texans, especially the rabid, recently arrived Texans that he just doesn’t get. Most of it surrounds our way of thinking. After giving it some thought, I have come to the conclusion that he is probably right about us. We are indeed, strange. For example:

We genuinely like each other and are among the friendliest people in the world. We respect each other and our kids do the same. You constantly hear “sir” and “ma’am” from our young people. We don’t have much use for Washington, D.C. A drive through any parking lot with a cursory look at bumper stickers shows that a surprising number of us wonder why we are still even a part of the U.S. We believe in self-reliance. The day after Hurricane Ike tore up the Gulf Coast, there were chainsaws roaring and hammers pounding. We didn’t wait for someone to come and take care of us. We don’t fit any of the molds. We believe in gun ownership, even if we’ve never touched one ourselves. We are mostly conservative but are nearly militant in our environmentalism. We try not to brag about being from Texas, but we all know we live in the most beautiful place on earth. Sometimes it’s hard to stay quiet! We are relaxed and at ease on the water, in the woods, up in the hills, out in the desert and everywhere else in Texas. We see it all as part of our home. We like money but not at the expense of our free time. We like to play and most of us never make the mistake of thinking work is more important than fun with our friends and family. We are just plain fun people. The most common last words spoken by Texans are “Hold my beer and watch this!” On that hot spring day in Sabinal, more than 1,200 people sat in the bleachers watching the competition. But no matter who was in the ring, everyone cheered. We were rooting for whoever was brave enough to get in there and get muddy and bloody. We were all there for each other—and we all had a ball. Yes, Texans do have some strange notions of what is fun. And that suits me just fine!

Fishing at Night

Beat the Heat & Catch Fish July is one of the hottest months of the year and one during which many anglers store their boats and gear due to the extreme daytime heat. Fortunately, there is a way to beat the heat and catch fish.

I

f you are one of those many fishermen that has to be in bed by ten o’clock each night, then night fishing may not be for you. If, however, you can tolerate staying up and fishing until the wee hours of the morning, then you just may have a great alternative to daytime fishing during July. Most of the time, night fishing does not turn on until close to midnight and can last until well after daybreak. The cool of the night, along with the quiet serenity, attracts an increasing number of anglers each year. If the July heat bothers you and interferes with your fishing, give serious consideration to fishing at night. Whether by boat, land or fishing pier, there are options for everyone.

22

“Enjoy the influx of speckled trout, reds and other fish that are attracted to the lights.” Mosquitoes likely are the number one pest for night anglers; however, a good repellent normally does the job and frees you to focus on what you came after, fish. The key to successful night fishing is lights on the water. They can be overhead or underwater lights, such as the popular Green Light. Lights attract bait and bait attracts fish. While lights on the water are vital, shore lights are important as well. Often areas that have well-illuminated water, such as fishing piers and docks, do not have good lighting for anglers. One of the hiccups this creates is poor visibility for cleaning your catch. Be sure to take along enough ice to keep your catch fresh until daylight sets in.

Bay Area Houston Magazine | JULY 2012

First, let’s talk about those anglers with boats. A good trolling motor is a must for most types of night fishing. This allows for quiet movement up and down canals and other areas lit up by lights on the water. For bank and pier fishermen, a good lantern, such as the Coleman brand, is a must. Now that you have identified the group you are in, let’s take a look at some of the options for places to fish. For boaters, look for canals, creeks and bayous, especially those in areas around houses with floodlights on their docks or underwater lights. Among the candidates are Dickinson Bayou, Clear Lake, the Diversionary Canal around

Hitchcock, subdivision canals that are not private and docks along channels. Bank fishermen have lighted commercial piers, such as those along the beachfront in Galveston, Sea Wolf Park and the San Leon area. If you have a portable generator with floodlights, then the Texas City Dike, Galveston Beachfront rock groins and the base of the Causeway Bridge are all excellent options for fishing at night. Flounder gigging is a nighttime sport and offers the same escape from the heat as the options discussed above. Night fishing requires a different technique than daytime. With lights on the water drawing bait and predator fish, free-lining live bait with no weight is the best technique. Live bait, especially live shrimp, is by far the bait of choice. Alligator gar are often caught late at night under lights and, if that is your target, heavier equipment will be needed. Aside from gar, enjoy the influx of speckled trout, reds and other fish that are attracted to the lights. Hitting the hay late morning with an ice chest of fish filets is a great way to sleep soundly while the early risers are battling sunburn and heat to try to catch what you brought in last night.

News & Events SAILORS INVITED TO BAY AREA HOUSTON AREA THIS FALL

The Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) Shoe Regatta Perpetual Trophy was earned by Richard Voyles (far left) on his J/22 named “Must Go Faster”. Pictured with him at the Awards Ceremony are LYC Commodore A. J. Ross, Race Committee Chairman Gerhard Wittich (behind podium), Past Commodore Tony Wessendorff and Voyle’s foredeck crew member Scott Putnam.

Voyles Captures Shoe Race Perpetual Trophy “Must Go Faster” J/22 racer Richard Voyles won the Shoe Regatta perpetual trophy at the awards ceremony held on Sunday, May 20. Hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club, Race Committee chairman Gerhard Wittich explained to the crowded ballroom that this trophy goes to the winner of the most competitive class of spinnaker classes sailing windward/leeward courses with at least 5 entrants. “On Saturday of the race, everything went so well,” remarked Voyles. “We always seemed to be going the right way – not sure why – but we were sure glad about that! All the pieces just came together perfectly.” He added that he and his foredeck crew member Scott Putnam really enjoyed the regatta this year as it was so well run; the Race Committee did an excellent job. The Shoe Regatta was held on Galveston Bay on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 with over 60 boats participating. Racers had good winds over the weekend and they were very pleased with the event. Beautiful weather enhanced the pool party on Saturday night with live music by Jeff Lopez’ “Cross Roads”. Lakewood Yacht Club racers earned 10 trophies at the awards ceremony. This is believed to be a record in the 30 years since the regatta was founded. Originally, it was named for the regatta sponsors Foley’s (department store) and Sperry Top-Sider shoes, a popular boat shoe

with racers. Winners of each fleet received pairs of Sperry shoes, hence the nickname The Shoe Race came into play. Rita Matthews and her late husband Ed were both instrumental in the founding of the race. Rita was thanked at the awards ceremony by Past Commodore Tony Wessendorff for her vision and hard work. Lakewood Yacht Club racers who won trophies were David Whelan, 1st place in the J/80 fleet on “Gulf Coast Quantum Racing”; Bill Zartler on “Solaris, 2nd place in the J/105 fleet with “Infinity” owned by Uzi Ozeri in 1st place. Al Goethe on “Hamburg” placed 1st in the J/109 fleet. In the Cruising Non-Spinnaker Classic Canvas (Distance), John Broderick placed 3rd on his “French Kiss” while Jack Seitzinger placed 2nd on “Asylum. Earning 1st place in PHRF Non-Spinnaker (Distance) was Hans Knickrehm on “Suite Deern”. For PHRF Spinnaker B, Tom Sutton took 2nd place on “Leading Edge”. Lakewood racers took third and first places in PHRF Spinnaker A, 3rd place went to Douglas Shaffer on “Gambler” while Steve Rhyne came in 1st on “Mojo.” Making The Shoe Race possible were gold sponsor Bay Access, a not for profit charitable organization that supports amateur racing on Galveston Bay. Silver sponsors were Sea Lake Yacht Sales and Mount Gay Rum. West Marine was the bronze sponsor this year.

When the sailing season ends in most parts of the country, there is still a full calendar of racing activities during the fall and winter seasons on the Gulf Coast and Galveston Bay. “With our temperate climate, we have yearround racing on Galveston Bay,” related Bay Area Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau President Pam Summers. “Racers don’t have to put their boats in storage for the fall and winter. They should trailer them to our area for a few extra months of racing and enjoying the weekends on the water,” added Lakewood Yacht Club Fleet Captain Joyce Maxwell. Several local yacht clubs, boatyards, and businesses are making provisions for free boat storage in between events for racers’ convenience. For details, please check the website: www.JFestSouthwest.com The organizations hosting autumn racing include the following: •

September 22-23: Houston Yacht Club One Design Regatta (J/22, J/24, J/80, J/105, and J/109) (www.houstonyachtclub.com)

Bringing Medical Center Quality Care to You

n 1995 Dr. Robert L. Burke opened a small office in Pearland and began to help a thriving community by offering exceptional care to his patients. Because of Pearland’s incredible growth, in October of 2000 Dr. Burke opened his new Pearland office in order to accommodate a very active community with a need to get back to work and play as soon as possible. Since that time he and his staff have treated many people both in the Pearland area and in many of the surrounding communities including Pasadena where he originally started his practice. His patients have included athletes and your nextdoor neighbors and his practice continues to grow on a daily basis with patients coming in from as far away as neighboring states. Both offices incorporate digital x-ray facilities, electronic medical records, e-prescribing, casting abilities and a variety of braces in-house for patient convenience, immediate care, diagnosis and treatment. His Pearland office also includes MRI capabilities that allow for even more patient convenience. His staff includes a certified orthopedic physician’s assistant, a practice administrator and an office staff with combined experience of over 38 years. Teamwork is the main factor that makes for a long lasting relationship between the employees and Dr. Burke. Patients often remark on how wonderful it is to see the same faces when they return and what a pleasure it is to deal with the staff and the service they provide. In addition to receiving the most up-to-date medical treatment by Dr. Burke, thank you letters as well as personal thank-yous are received from patients complimenting how they have been treated at every stage of their experience. With a well-respected, highly qualified orthopedic surgeon and the combination of all of the above factors you can understand why patients consistently talk about peace of mind they have knowing that they are receiving the best orthopedic care possible. Because of this, when needed, care is extended to many family members and friends of patients and the relationships that are built are long-standing. Fondren Orthopedic Group L.L.P. is recognized nationally as one of the largest and most comprehensive associations of private orthopedic surgery practitioners in Houston. Formed in 1973, the group has more than 50 surgeons. Because of its physicians’ long-standing reputations for leadership in the field of orthopedic surgery, as well as in teaching and research, Fondren Orthopedic Group has become one of the nation’s most respected and well-established Orthopedic practices. He has been in practice since 1991, is board certified by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and specializes in sports medicine. He is a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the Texas Orthopedic Association, the Texas Sports Medicine Society and several other organizations as well. The staff is there five days a week to personally help with any questions you may have and will provide you with answers in a timely manner. Being entrusted to transform lives for years to come is something that makes us quite proud.

A Passion for the Fine Art of Dentistry

We’ve also learned from hundreds of our patients reporting that their quality of care with Tieken Smiles continues to improve their well being and selfconfidence far beyond the brief time they spend in our high-tech, high touch surroundings. Providing “Best Care” dental options is a misunderstood, but wonderful profession! Many don’t understand the importance of their oral health, although it directly affects serious risks, such as heart attacks and many more life threatening diseases. Going to the dentist has changed; even Dr. Oz has said that your dental appointment may be your single most important healthcare visit each year. New research has shown that missing teeth can shorten your life an average of 10 years. Periodontal disease is directly connected to cardiovascular disease, low birth weight in babies, Alzheimer’s disease and pancreatic cancer. Your dentist can now check you for oral cancer, HPV, and risk for periodontal disease by getting a saliva sample. So, we’re really educators first, and providers once you are aware of the life changing benefits our services offer you.”

Dr. Tieken’s mission is to bring the medical and dental community together just as he brought the BAM makeover team together in years past. By joining forces, we can more thoroughly provide total health and wellness for all. A healthy mouth, along with a beautiful smile, can create an overall healthy person in body and spirit. Whether “Best Care” for you means a complete smile makeover, or simply removing a cavity and filling the tooth without use of shots or drills, we are dedicated to your comfort and quality care. We offer early diagnosis and removal of old outdated silver fillings (mercury amalgam). Silver is replaced with modern porcelain fillings or crowns. Dr. Tieken gives back to the community he serves. On August 4, Dr. Tieken and team are excited to host the 1st annual Tieken Tooth Fairies Event, which is a day of dentistry, sealants, cleanings, and screenings for kids ages K-12. “As a growing number of Americans have lost their jobs and lack dental insurance, we feel this is a great way to address many health problems and give back to our community and serve those in need,” states Dr. Tieken.

NASA’S Commercial Crew Partner Sierra Nevada Corporation Completes Dream Chaser Flight Test Milestone LOUISVILLE, Colo. -- Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) Space Systems successfully completed a "captive carry test" of its full-scale Dream Chaser orbital crew vehicle Tuesday, marking a new milestone in the company's effort to develop transportation for astronauts to low Earth orbit and the International Space Station. During the test, the Dream Chaser flight vehicle was carried under an Erickson Air-Crane helicopter to assess the vehicle's aerodynamic flight performance, which will allow additional flight tests in the future. The helicopter flew for approximately an hour near the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Jefferson County, Colo. SNC is one of several companies working to develop commercial crew transportation capabilities under the Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2) agreement with NASA's Commercial Crew Program (CCP), which is helping spur innovation and development of new spacecraft and launch vehicles from the commercial industry. "This is a very positive success for the Dream Chaser team and their innovative approach," NASA CCP Program Manager Ed Mango said. "I applaud and encourage the designers and engineers to continue their efforts in meeting the objectives of the rest of their CCDev2 milestones."

42

Bay Area Houston Magazine | JULY 2012

The Dream Chaser is designed to carry as many as seven astronauts to space. It is the only spacecraft under CCDev2 that is winged and designed to land on a conventional runway. Data from the test will provide SNC an early opportunity to evaluate and prove hardware, facilities and ground operations in preparation for approach and landing tests scheduled for later this year.

“This is a very positive success for the Dream Chaser team and their innovative approach,” "The successful captive carry flight test of the Dream Chaser full scale flight vehicle marks the beginning of SNC's flight test program, a program that could culminate in crewed missions to the International Space Station for NASA," said Steve Lindsey, former NASA astronaut and head of Dream Chaser's flight operations for SNC. Additional milestones leading up to the test included evaluating the performance of the main landing gear selected for use on the Dream Chaser flight vehicle, an interface test to demonstrate the release mechanism between the spacecraft prototype and the heavy-lift helicopter, and a thorough flight test readiness review

with engineers, technical experts and representatives from SNC and NASA. Another milestone evaluated the separation system compatibility of Dream Chaser with its initial launch vehicle, the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, which would be used to release the spacecraft from the rocket's second stage after it has placed the spacecraft into low Earth orbit. All of NASA's industry partners, including SNC, continue to meet their established milestones in developing commercial crew transportation capabilities. ome out and try some authentic Indian cuisine at Mogul Indian Restaurant. Enjoy a buffet-style lunch or stop by and enjoy dinner a la carte. Years ago in India’s history, the Moguls were an influential dynasty of emperors who ruled India from 16th to the mid-18th century. The cuisine came to be called ‘Mughalai’ to honor these emperors. Legend says that the chefs served royal families in delight and the tradition continues here at Mogul. A haven for vegetarians, there are a variety of dishes to choose from and you won’t be disappointed. When most people are asked what food they associate with India, they say “curry” but this does not stand true with every dish. It includes a whole range and variety of dishes, with each being very different according to the spices used in Indian cooking. If you’re looking for a subtle or a pungent, hot or mild, there’s always a delicacy to suit every taste. Catering is also available for both small and large parties as well as delivery. The restaurant seats up to 200, and a spacious banquet room is also available for hosting any event and seats up to 300 guests. Mogul has been serving the Bay Area since 1994 when they opened their first location on Space Center and Bay Area Boulevard and in December 2011 they moved to a larger location to better accommodate larger parties. Mogul is located at 1055 Bay Area Boulevard and is open for lunch 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
