Letter from the Chairman of the Board The 2011 – 2012 fiscal year was one of opportunity and transformation at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, especially at the institution’s leadership level. First, we were thrilled to name Karyn Flynn as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, following a successful four-month appointment as Interim Executive Director. Karyn’s deep understanding of the Museum, based on her many years as a Trustee, as well as her extensive business background having worked for Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management, positioned the Museum to develop and implement quickly an effective strategic plan. A key element of that strategic plan – to launch the Center for Childhood Creativity – was realized by naming Elizabeth Rieke as the Center’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director. Drawing upon her extensive experience in retail, museum and product launches – including leading the re-positioning and re-opening of the California Academy of Sciences – Elizabeth led the Center’s incredible year of foundation building which you will read about later in this Report. I recently heard the story from one of our founding Trustees that she and her cohort started the Bay Area Discovery Museum because they wanted “to give children a better start in life.” Since our opening in 1987, we’ve done just that, transforming the lives of millions of families in the Bay Area and beyond. It’s an incredibly exciting time at the Museum, with recent scientific research demonstrating the significance of the early childhood period in a person’s cognitive, social and physical development. Our goal is for the children who visit the Museum today to grow into capable, resilient, innovative, and happy 21st century adults. With our new leadership team and a renewed focus on how our child-directed and play-based educational pedagogy impacts our visitors, we are proud to share our success with you in this Report. Letter from the CEO and Executive Director, Bay Area Discovery Museum It’s hard to overstate how exciting 2011-2012 was at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Having begun my relationship with the Museum as a parent of young children, deepening that relationship with six years as a Trustee, I then was thrilled to be appointed CEO & Executive Director because I know first-hand the impact the Museum has on our visitors. I believe deeply in our mission and am committed to offering the highest quality, researchbased early childhood learning experiences on-site and beyond. We have big dreams for the Museum and for the children, families, caregivers and educators we serve. Our first step in achieving our goals was to spend the year strengthening our foundation. New Strategic Plan In the months between September and December 2011, we completed a thorough evaluation of the Museum’s internal and external functions, with close focus on the visitor experience. The result of this work was a strategic plan that identified the following institutional priorities: 1. Optimize Organizational Effectiveness 2. Re-vitalize the Visitor Experience 3. Launch the Center for Childhood Creativity Executing against these priorities has guided all of our efforts over the past year and has provided alignment for the Museum, the Board of Trustees and the Discovery Council. Highlights from our progress follow. Optimize Organizational Effectiveness: New Leadership Team Over the course of the year, we built a strong senior leadership team equipped with the experience and skills needed to execute on our strategic priorities. Key hires include Brandy Vause as the new Director of Development, Amparo Leyman Pino as the new Director of Educational Content & Programming, and Rolf Neuweiler as the new CFO & Director of Finance. As an institution, we also worked to bring best practices to every function in the Museum, as well as investing our resources in developing a professional and robust group of Discovery Guides, our front line educators who interact most closely with the public.

Letter from the CEO and Executive Director, Bay Area Discovery Museum Re-vitalize the Visitor Experience In 2011-2012, we realized substantial growth in the role of the Museum as a vehicle for informal education. Using a combination of early childhood research and visitor/member feedback, we developed a robust plan which creates an impactful educational experience for young children and families on-site. •

On-site Programming: We significantly increased the amount of daily, on-site programming – including drop-in and pop-up activities – such as Art Lab, and through partnerships with the National Park Service, local artists and even a professional hula-hooper.

Not-A-School: We piloted the Museum’s first creative enrichment drop-off program, Not-A-School. This program is geared for children ages 2.9 – 6 and provides an opportunity to explore the arts, the sciences and the environment through play and guided inquiry. Not-A-School is a unique opportunity for us to draw on the Museum’s educational philosophy which allows children and adults to construct learning together.

Connections Outreach Program: Our flagship outreach program, Connections, served a record 1,700 children from San Francisco, Marin and Contra Costa counties through a total of 9,000 site visits. Through Connections, we partner with subsidized preschools from throughout the Bay Area to encourage interdisciplinary early learning with an emphasis on STEM education through multiple visits to the Museum and curriculum support for teachers.

Professional Development: Working with our Connections partners, in summer 2012 we piloted a professional development program for 20 pre-school teachers working in underserved schools. Through generous support from a new donor, we provided a year-long professional development program that focuses on integrating scientific inquiry into art, literacy and math instruction.

Free Admissions and Open Door Access: As a public institution, we are committed to ensuring that the Museum is accessible by all children and families, regardless of their personal resources. In fact, access for all is one of our most important goals. In 2011-2012, we continued to reach out to children and families from communities where resources are scarce and educational opportunities limited. Through Museum access programs such as Open Door Access, monthly Free First Wednesdays, Library Membership Passes, Community Organizations Initiative and other admission discounts, the Museum served 45,000 children and their families with free or reduced admission. Letter from the CEO and Executive Director, Bay Area Discovery Museum Center for Childhood Creativity At our Creativity Forum luncheon in March 2012, we announced the launch of the Center for Childhood Creativity. With Elizabeth Rieke named as CEO & Executive Director, we made tremendous progress in piloting the CCC’s first professional development programs in summer 2012. The goal of the Center is to raise national awareness about the growing creativity deficit in young children and its implications. To that end, we will work directly with parents and educators to provide knowledge and tools for cultivating creative minds. More information on the CCC is detailed later in this Report. Financial Summary Of course, our effectiveness in achieving our goals depends on the financial security of our organization. I’m pleased to share the following overview of our robust 2011 – 2012 financial summary: –

Contributed revenue was up 20%

Visitor Revenue (membership and paid admits) was up 15%

Number of summer campers was up 23%

Visitorship stayed steady at approximately 300,000

Birthday party revenue increased by 43%

Looking Ahead Last year was one of many transitions and a chance to lay the foundation for the exciting work ahead. We continue to pledge our commitment to your children, our community and the future of creativity and look forward to partnering with you to expand our reach and impact in 2012-2013. Letter from the CEO and Executive Director, Center for Childhood Creativity For over three years, the Bay Area Discovery Museum explored the idea of extending its reach and impact before officially launching the Center for Childhood Creativity at Creativity Forum in March 2012. The CCC builds on the Museum's child-centered, hands-on, constructivist approach as a foundation for all we do. Our services provide parents and the larger educational community with tools to cultivate deeper learning in the classroom and at home. We rely on extensive research in early childhood learning and development to back up the incredible work we do here at the Museum. In this way, the Museum is not only incubating the CCC, but also serving as a lab for our research platform. 2011-2012 was a year of foundation building for the CCC, adding a full-time CEO & Executive Director, extending our family of supporters, creating the beginnings of several long-term academic partnerships, dipping a toe in the advocacy waters and making a very big splash with our educational programs. These programs were the primary area of focus for me especially, and we are off to a tremendous start with our K - 4 professional development pilot. In summer 2012, we partnered with four schools and trained 60 teachers from grades K - 4 in our three-day “Creativity Immersion” program, bringing the best of new research in brain science to the classroom. Teachers learned the components and value of creative thinking, and received tools and strategies for developing engaging classroom curriculum focused on empowering a child’s whole brain to participate in learning. These schools continued with a year-long support program of monthly trainings focused on application and advancing teaching practices. The addition of the CCC to the Museum's portfolio allows us to expand our demographic reach to older children – we train teachers up through fourth grade, to access educational funding sources that previously overlooked the Museum and to extend our impact into the adult community through parents and teachers – reaching far more children than we can on-site.
