I really don’t think there has ever been so much fantastic Italian wine available and there is so much more to come. Ridiculously, it is making my job harder than ever – in the past there would have been a handful of great producers per region and a few young Turks striving to make a name for themselves, now it’s pretty much every village. We have had to accept that sadly, knowledge reveals ignorance, such truths bother me little, this year we have gone about our job with real vigour, visiting producers every single month. Yes, it has been a brilliant year. Please note, this is a mere selection of what we have in stock. Much to Emma’s dismay we have bought more wine than ever, balancing classics with some dangerously adventurous purchases – I may need your help with the Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, brilliant wines, but not obvious. The Wine Club celebrated its third year with some serious recognition from the International Wine Challenge who shortlisted us (alongside only the Wine Society) for the hard fought ‘Best UK Wine Club of the Year’. We are fairly certain that had the category been ‘Best Italian Wine Club’, we would have trumped it! We must be doing something right. The Christmas pre-mixed cases are made up from some wonderful wines; with notes enclosed you can also have your own card and message inserted at no extra charge. As usual, we are happy to tailor private and corporate gifts to suit your requirements exactly, using only the finest of components and our personal touch. We hope we will see you at one of our winter tastings, but if you can’t make it we look forward to hearing from you soon. Salute,

We show no restraint here; the floral Lacrima is way into left field and perfect with fatty dishes like goose or duck. The Greco is magnificent, at its peak, with minerality and a depth of fruit to compliment fine fayre admirably. The spectacular Erbaluce has piercing, fresh, elemental force. The Franciacorta strikes again: the 2010 balances vibrancy with mature flavours. Settle down with the unctuous unique flavours of Teroldego, the fillet-steak of reds. Then, round things off with the perfect honeyed Vin Santo. Salute! Page 5 | 01572 759735 | batwine.uk

This covers every base: the new Extra Dry is sheer irrepressible fun; the Broccatelli crisp and refreshing whilst Frentana’s Montepulciano is boisterous and fruity. I adore Roari’s biodynamic Pinot Grigio, it simply tastes like proper wine and is well up to the Christmas feast. Likewise the fresh, pure fruit of the Motta complements sumptuous meats and cheeses. Finally, the Moscato, an alarmingly drinkable sweetie that we love with a slice of Christmas cake and whisky butter. Page 6 | 01572 759735 | batwine.uk

The demand for natural wines rolls on unabated, perhaps it is more hype than actual sales, it is none the less a welcome addition to the world of wine and one in which, as it turns out, we have been at the vanguard of. These are great wines that also happen to be made biodynamically. Petrilli is the exception, his wines are registered organic and vegan and the attention Paolo bestows on his vines is similarly glorious. This is a beautifully balanced, soil friendly case for the festive season (and about as healthy as wine gets).

Magnums I love magnums, they are the perfect size and totally irresistible, so we always have an eclectic range. This year I have gone long on Petrilli’s Agramante, not much of a gamble, it is off-the-scale brilliant. CASE BIANCHE. PROSECCO BRUT ‘CUC’ 2016 ISV027 | Veneto | Glera

Erbaluce is an incredibly rare white grape that is only found in the mountainous part of Piemonte. It has the potential to be one of Italy’s great whites and here is the proof. Beautiful aromas of honeysuckle, lime and kiwi. An intensely flavoured wine, direct and pure with white peach and floral fruit. Remarkable depth of flavour, yet crisp and light, a concise, superb dry wine. Camillo has made a wine with the steely backbone of a classic Chablis and the race and nerve of Sauvignon. This is ready to drink but will mature over a ten year period. Le Chiusure is just over a hectare of south facing vineyard. It is on stony soils at an altitude of three hundred and fifty metres. The grapes are picked by hand, de-stemmed and softly pressed, the must is then macerated for just over a day and cold stabilised. The fermentation is with inoculated yeasts at eighteen degrees. The wine matures on the lees in large barrels until April, when it is then bottled and cellared for at least a month before being released.

This could be the find of the year, seriously! Anything but a run of the mill PG, forget the alcoholised water usually served up, think first cousin of Pinot Noir – refinement and nobility. The biodynamic farming may be the reason for a burst of lime, jasmine and banana aromas. Fresh greengage and bitter lemon fruit flavours vie with asparagus and tomato leaf. Bone dry, intriguing and very lovely.

Cantine di Marzo is not just one of Italy’s oldest estates, it is also the birthplace of Greco di Tufo, each generation tweaking the wine. Ferrante enjoys freshness and has infused a joyous style. This is a beautiful Greco which balances floral citrus fruit with a sleek freshness. Delicate minerality is offset with lime, apricot and passion fruit, it is perfectly tuned for smoked fish or antipasti.

Less than 8000 bottles were made of this extraordinary wine which is made from eight clones of Tocai Giallo (including 300 Tocai Giallo di Peduncolo Rosso vines – crazy rare). Luxurious and spiced fruit – quite viognier-like. Intricate and full. Complex apricot, apple and grapefruit with subtle mint, tarragon and exotic spice nuance. Absolutely superb. A genuine, natural beauty. Unforced raspberry and bramble flavours, a twist of spice, ripe soft tannins, simple and elegant. With or without food, this is perfect, it is not a wine for ageing, it is pure pleasure, totally ready to drink. It is worth noting that Paolo has the potential to make just 18,000 bottles, and in two of the last five years he has not made a single bottle of the estate wine ‘Agramante’. Prior to 2015, when there was no Agramante the grapes were sold to a local cooperative, fortunately Paolo had a change of heart and generously created a second label - ‘Motta del Lupo’. The Sangiovese and Bombino are picked first in the middle of September, then the Montepulciano and finally the Nero di Troia. Fermentation is in steel tanks and lasts seven days with a regular pumping over. The wine is aged for six months in steel and bottled with a light filtration. This is certified both organic and vegan.

Full, soft and ripe blackberry and bramble fruit, with hints of after eight and kirsch. Palustrel is gratuitous and enormous fun. It is very unusual for us to have two wines of the year from the same producer, but these are so good and extraordinary value. Palustrel is an appassimento of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Bordeaux meets Amarone! The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, grapes fermented spontaneously and the wine aged only in steel. CONTE EMO. Raboso is an ancient vine, rarely seen now, more is the pity it makes one of Italy’s longest-lived wines. Typically, this variety is a difficult youngster, the 2011 has come out of its aggressive period to reveal rounded fig and forest fruit flavours with mushroom, spice and earth. A wine for the traditionalists, great with cheeses and full meat dishes, a real treat. VILLA GIADA. BRICCO DANI 2014

Ripe raspberry and black cherry fruit, powerful mature tannins with delicate tobacco, dark chocolate and truffle flavours. A single vineyard Prosecco, made in the driest and most difficult styles of all: ‘Brut’. A wine we have imported for over twenty years and in all that time production has been overseen by Lionello. He is the master. A finely honed, excellent fizz and our long standing house favourite, never out of style and always elegant. ROBERTO ZENI. MASO NERO RISERVA 2011

According to local legend the old farm, bought by the Zeni family in 1988, was a hideout for local bandits. This vintage was fermented and aged (for six months) in used barriques. It is full and finely structured, with lemon, grapefruit and ripe herb flavours, white flowers and hints of vanilla. A summer-like freshness and beautiful purity and flavour. SAFFIRIO. Sara was quick off the blocks to spot the potential of Nebbiolo as a top ingredient for high quality sparkling wine and what’s more, she has put her faith in ‘the traditional method’ and allowed some skin contact. This has both lightly coloured and delicately flavoured the wine. The grapes are selected from across the vineyards used for Barolo and Langhe Nebbiolo, they are picked by hand at the earliest opportunity. Tiny bubbles through crystal clear fruit. Delicate strawberry, raspberry, elderflower, lemon and summer meadow. A very pretty wine (and enjoyed at Emma’s 50th dinner.) Page 13 | 01572 759735 | batwine.uk

Dry Rosé Wines Wines that bring sunshine into the darkening evenings, refreshing and nostalgic, giving a glimpse of hope that summer is never too far away. As an aperitivo that runs through into a tasty simple meal, there are few better wines. Frentana’s Trabocchi has an enticing pink, it is a big step from the dark traditional Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo making excellent use of their Merlot; reminiscent of homemade lemonade with ripe cherry fruit. Broccatelli’s two roses are Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese, fresh crushed berry flavours and a coppery hue. Zeni’s Pinot Grigio Ramato is our palest, most coppery and most Provence-like; what it lacks in colour, it makes up for in flavour, it’s fresh in a way that only mountain wines can be. Ramato is the purest (and my favourite) expression of Pinot Grigio. Then we have two more mountain wines from the Alto (high) Piemonte and Etna (Sicily) by Favaro and Costanzo. They could hardly be further away geographically, but in style they are far from distant. They flatter to deceive with their pale pinks and cherry colours. To taste, these are in fact light flavoursome reds, with mineral and expressive fruit. Favaro says it all in the name – rosé but not rosé. FRENTANA. COSTA DEI TRABOCCHI' 2016

Dry Sparkling White Wines - Fizz The 2016 Cuc is as good as any vintage that I can remember, it is exactly how Prosecco should be: fresh, pure and elegant with apple and peach flavours, the little black dress of sparkling wines. The Undici comes from a remarkable vineyard and the wine consequently has more fruit and structure; it is brilliant with pastries and the perfect start to a special day. These wines have little in common with the run of the mill Prosecco, I search for a really good entry level Prosecco every year but with the same result, a realisation that you get what you pay for. It is far from doom and gloom, ironically the popularity of Prosecco (grape type = Glera) has pushed down the price of Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay, which in turn, inspired Case Bianche to create the Cuvée Extra Dry whose Ruinart’esque livery is very fine and the fruit finer still, round and lush, there is no Prosecco at the price to touch it Both Rauscedo and Quacquarini have a history making quality sparkling wines: Rauscedo’s conversion of Ribolla Gialla into a spumante was inspired, it is a grape that somehow traps the sunshine and freshness of the land. Quacquarini have taken their knowledge of Vernaccia di Serrapetrona and applied it to Verdicchio from Matelica, the result is the Spumante Brut: a mineral, uplifting delicately honeyed fizz with passion fruit, lemon and almond flavours, very delicious. Unsurprisingly, we believe there are less reasons than ever to choose Champagne when Franciacorta is giving it, not just a run for the money, but a pretty sound thrashing. Franciacorta remains resolutely underrated, an exceptional ‘insider wine.’ Majolini have dropped ‘NV’ from the label of their Brut, letting the cat out of the bag - this is, and always has been a single vintage wine. The Brut 2010 is the kind of single estate vintage fizz that Champagne houses place at the top of the list, whereas this is merely Majolini’s opening gambit. Moving up through their range is the ‘Aligi Sassu’, an Extra Brut made from Chardonnay alone, it is a difficult wine to make, there is no margin for error and this pas dosé is immaculate. The Satén ‘Ante Omnia’ is in a classic crémant style, fine small bubbles, a perfect aperitivo. We have indulged in the ‘Dosaggio Zero’ from Zeni, a highaltitude Pinot Bianco that hit the optimum ripeness required to wear barrique-fermentation and ageing with such finesse. It is full, rich and bone dry, tight and mineral, a world class sparkling wine. Their Maso Nero Riserva shows more restraint and minerality, very classic. Finally, Gusbourne’s Blanc de Blanc is simply the best English sparkling wine I have tasted.

Dry Sparkling Rosé Wines It has been a wonderful year for finding brilliant new dry sparkling rosé, which all started last November when I first tasted Alessia’s PetNat ‘Rossanel’… biodynamic farming, amphora fermentation, second fermentation in bottle with no remuage. I had never heard of a grape called Rossignola and it tastes lovely, irresistible! Do serve chilled and be ready for the fact that it is not just delicious and bone dry, but cloudy if disturbed and some like it that way and some do not. Then in February we were in Piemonte and tasted Andrea’s Rosé for the first time. This is a more conventional Charmat wine, gloriously fresh, aromas of rose and strawberry with a lovely creamy texture – Emma wouldn’t allow this one to be left behind. A few days later in Barolo country I got the shock of my life when Sara served me her Nebbiolo Brut Rosé, pale as a winter sunrise, piercing ethereal fruit, genuinely, a revelation and as good as any pink Champagne. For my taste - considerably better. Now I have waxed lyrical about the new wines, it is time to remind you of our regulars, that is if a ‘Wildbacher Brut’ can be called regular? It is from a single sweep of vines below Col Sandago, delicate raspberry and strawberry. Dry, pale, there is nothing like it. It is so difficult to split Zeni’s Maso Nero Brut Rosé and Gusbourne’s Sparkling Rosé, both have the tension, minerality and wild forest fruit that Pinot Noir gifts: the Zeni has a little more ripeness and citrus fruit, Gusbourne more berry flavours. Both are truly fabulous. As usual, we have imported these wines because we love them, no one has asked for them, so I just need you to give them a go!

Dry Sparkling Red Wines Dry, sparkling and red, words that are rarely seen together. But, when done well, I don’t think there are any better wines for the Christmas feast - if there is any left we will be drinking the Quacquarini! Medici’s Concerto is consistently the best wine to come out of Emilia Romagna, a big claim which I must qualify – the price-quality ratio is off the scale. Sublime generous berry fruit, a touch of sloe, frothy and fun. Quacquarini is an altogether more serious proposition, the Vernacciia Nera grapes are dried before pressing, it is in effect a sparkling Amarone from the Marche. Bizarre and brilliant!

Dry Fresh White Wines This selection contains vintages as fine as any I can remember: 2016 was a classic for white grapes, especially in the Abruzzo and Umbria where cool conditions delivered elegance and freshness. 2015 was generally better for reds, however the extra ripeness was harnessed by the more serious white winemakers who wove structure through refreshing fruit. So, my tip as the season builds up a head of steam is to clear as much space in your fridge as possible for lovely, fresh whites. Better still, invest in a wine fridge and set it at ten degrees; six to eight is too cold, it masks the flavours. These wines deserve care, they are the refreshing pick-me-ups, perfect when a cup of tea just doesn’t cut it, when friends appear unexpectedly or simply to take the edge off a long day. They have the added benefit of being incredibly food friendly. We open with our longstanding partners: Broccatelli’s Bianco and Grechetto, both so versatile and so very delicious, the Grechetto more so. Frentano’s Trebbiano has been spectacularly popular, beautifully fresh and easydrinking, oft overlooked and consequently fantastic value - the perfect recovery tonic for a wretched Wednesday. This year I have added a second Trebbiano, the Fonte Cupa from Camillo Montori, it has more structure, fruit and minerality and is perfect with shellfish. Cococciola is an absurdly rare grape and the closest wine gets to a G&T. Rauscedo has stepped into Plozner’s size tens and Franscesco (ex-Plozner winemaker) is making better wines than ever: his Pinot Grigio is ambitious and finely poised, the Sauvignon is exciting and immaculate and the Friulano with its fresh apple and almond flavours is a wine that never disappoints. We have learned to never underestimate the pull of ‘PG’, it is a first cousin of Pinot Noir and whilst making a case for shared family genius may be problematic, arguing for its intrinsic quality is not; Monte dei Roari’s Tre Rie is wonderful, a wine of the year! From Toscana we have Santa Vittoria’s feisty Grechetto, which unluckily has developed a cult following Stateside. Colognole’s Chardonnay remains under the radar, a cool climate white from under Rùfina’s Mount Giovi, it is an absolute classic unwooded chardonnay with modest elegance. The first of Stefano Mancinelli’s Verdicchio wines is the Classico, one of those remarkable wines that seems to escape the bottle between glasses. With smoked fish or seared scallops, I can think of few better wines.

Dry Fresh White Wines The Verdicchio Classico Superiore has a touch more intensity and floral, honeyed fruit; a genuinely gifted wine. Matteo Ascheri has honed his Cortese into a benchmark Gavi that is disturbingly easy to drink. Travel a little North and a lot East to find perfectly cut wines from the Zeni family. Their Sauvignon has a force and focus more usually encountered in the southern hemisphere, it is a truly remarkable wine. Di Marzo’s Fiano is the transparent result obtained by marrying fine vineyard work and immaculate winemaking to the high altitude volcanic soils of Avellino. A wine that is far more complex than it first appears, like Ferrante… a fun-loving prodigy if you like. A great aperitivo or a mildly exotic food wine. Bulfon’s Cividìn stands apart, the extra year in bottle has extracted orange peel and clove, backed by an exotic tagine mouthfeel that is anchored by the racy attack of citrus fruit; brilliant and unique. The very slightly more planted Erbaluce from Favaro is the Soshu of Italian white wines, precise, taut and powerful, a style I love.

Dry Aromatic White Wines There is a perfect moment in the day when a dry, aromatic white wine hits the spot, a few minutes before something I call lunchtime. The exuberant, tropical-style fruit and honeyed notes greet you from the glass and are a positive tonic to the abstinence of the morning, soothing and uplifting. Naturally, these wines share a single characteristic; however lush and floral the aroma, I can assure you that it will be followed by a fresh, dry palette. The kind of thing that is in perfect harmony with a salad of roasted vegetables, a fillet of seabass, perhaps some left-over chicken or turkey, or maybe even game-pie and pickle. These are also wines that accompany a curry rather well, complimenting spice rather than fighting any heat. The Gewürztraminer is at the more extreme rose-petal end and works really well with blue cheeses. The Piùchebello has the lightest touch, orange blossom and grape, a genuinely delightful aperitivo. The Arneis has luminescence, the flavours lifted by exotic eastern-fruit and faint spice, it is delicate and rounded. Zeni has tweaked the Nosiola, a fraction more body and markedly even better for it. The Lissart is grown on granitic soils, it’s all flowers and oriental fruit on the nose, but the palate is dry, intense with orange and apricot flavours, ripe herb and minerality. Lovely (as they all are…). Page 21 | 01572 759735 | batwine.uk

Medium to Full Bodied Dry White Wines Naturally, there is some overlap with the ‘light whites’, it is just personal taste after all. In this selection oak starts to make an appearance and when it does, we like it to not be intrusive. The one constant in this selection is an intensity rather than weight to the wines. These wines are never left on the table after a tasting, they get taken home to dinner. At the lighter end we have Frentana’s Pecorino: floral with jasmine, green peppers and dried lemon peel. Picéch’s wines are altogether broader in the shoulder: his Malvasia offers complex bitter sweet yellow fruit, textured, laminated mature flavours; his Pinot Bianco proves the greatness of both the grape and winemaker with its crusty fresh-bread nose and rich mouthfeel, all this achieved without the use of oak. The Jelka (named after Roberto’s mother) is very special, fermented in oak with layer upon layer of rich spiced fruit. Also from the Friuli comes Bulfon’s ‘Rugel’ which simply has to be experienced, undoubtedly the greatest dry Ucelùt in living memory. As for the Sbilf, it is an extraordinary Friulano, deep and spiced, rich and harmonious. Moving west to San Zeno we have ‘Il Casale’, a masterful Soave from an old Garganega vineyard grown on ancient volcanic soils which lend depth, rounded nut and ripe lemon fruit flavours. A little further west to find Ascheri’s Viognier which has the spice and depth we love when this enigmatic grape is perfectly presented: wild honey, nutmeg, clove and vanilla combined with the classic apricot, white peach and rose petal inflections that make it a genuine treat. Then we have Paolo’s unicorn, the Sant’ Agnese L’Étrange, just one small vat of Vermentino that has rested on the lees, with some skins too, for twelve months. The result is so harmonious, mineral but fleshy with a subtle grip of tannin. To complete this selection, we have three remarkable wines from the South where volcanic soils and altitude provide the perfect growing conditions for magnificent white wines. Ferrante’s Greco di Tufo is immaculate, combining freshness with a firm restraint. The fruit is fine and mineral, the finish fantastically long. Decanter chose the Bianco dei Sei as one of the wines to watch in 2017, the previous vintage was my wine of the year and it would be again if I didn’t like sharing this accolade a bit. It has an intensity and freshness combined with a richness (again no oak) that has stunned me: complex, lime, white peach, flint and herb flavours. Their Mofete is the junior version, more charm, less stature.

Light Red Wines These red wines are potentially the most versatile and the most overlooked. They have light tannins and no oak - pretty much by definition - but they have depth of fruit and finely balanced acidity that makes them just brilliant to drink! Best with lively discussion, rambling chatter, even antipasti, leftovers and mid-week suppers. If you are in the right sort of mood, these wines can also be terrific fun slightly chilled. The wine trade reports to itself on the growing popularity of this style of wine, something that appears to have missed Rutland, perhaps we are uber-fashionistas, I doubt it. We have found and imported our best value natural wine yet, Monte dei Roari’s Bardolino, it has impeccable credentials, vibrant fruit bursting from the glass, floral and light. I must add a small caveat, do look after these natural wines, cellar temperature (8-12˚C) is best, the low levels of sulphites makes the wine vulnerable to heat. The second natural wine is the ‘Dosset’ from Principiano, it is a de-classified Dolcetto d’Alba – de-classified because Ferdinando likes early-picked, low alcohol Dolcetto whilst sadly the regulators do not. We have two more Dolcetto wines: Matteo’s opus, the 2015 Nirane. He considered this a perfect vintage for Dolcetto and I cannot disagree. The final Dolcetto is from Le Marie on the western borders of Piemonte, this is grown on granitic soils and is more flinty with sharp brambly fruit, a feisty wine. Also from Piemonte, we have Favaro’s F2, a Freisa made with some carbonic maceration (Beaujolais style) and some conventional fermentation. The result is a floral, full flavoured red with the gentlest grip of ripe tannins. Righetti’s Valpolicella has a little more weight but remains floral with cherry and damson fruit. Montecchia are masters with Cabernet Franc and the 2016 is perfect, ripe minty berry fruit, one of the most versatile wines on earth. I am not sure Bulfon’s Cianorôs could taste better, it is perfectly mature, terrifyingly easy to drink and highly recommended with pigeon or perhaps even turkey. Then there is the equally mature, excellent and exceedingly rare Rossara from Zeni, it has a unique supple concentration, strawberry and cassis flavours, no tannins. Delicious. To finish, two of the Marche’s finest in Paglianetto’s Terravigata and Mancinelli’s Lacrima; Paglianetto have tamed the excesses of Lacrima with Sangiovese and Merlot, the result is a very grown up, balanced red. Mancinelli has allowed the insanity of Lacrima to take over the wine, the dark fruit is laced with violet and rose, totally magnificent.

Medium to Full Bodied Red Wines My one overriding rule when making this selection is that the wines must be ready to drink. That done, I attempt to lead you through the soft, rich fruity bass-filled reds, the earthy old-skool gents loved by ‘traditionalists’ (like me) and the slightly more extreme, edgy, elemental character unearthed by altitude, granitic and volcanic soils. By hint of good fortune, I love all of these styles and this years’ selection (it really is just a selection, we have many, many more wines) is a nicely balanced line-up. Opening with our finest range of ‘essentials’ yet: - sub ten-pound wines with clout: Broccatelli’s Sangiovese is juicy and fresh, a gutsy Chianti style that is oh so easy, a brilliant pasta wine. Frentana’s Montepulciano is more generously cut, soft ripe fruit, open and generous, a classic party wine (and available in magnums); Sampietrana make a wonderfully authentic and correct Primitivo that is alarmingly drinkable. Then we have Ferrante’s raucous and rustic Vesuvia, it is just about under control, a puppy of a wine. We can rely on the South to provide some winter sunshine and Paolo’s ‘Motta del Lupo’ does this in some style, all the elements are in balance, fine blueberry fruit, an elegance, looseness and refreshing drinkability, simply the ultimate party wine. The Montepulciano from Montori is back after many years, better than ever with full, soft, luscious red berry fruit, it is an absolute joy. From across the Apennines we have Mauro and Marta’s excellent Poggio al Tempio, which is far better than the price suggests: a serious, aged Sangiovese with Tuscan warmth and style. Their Leopoldo is a brilliant Pugnitello, an incredibly rare and ancient Tuscan vine, warm with spice and ripe forest-fruit flavours. Cesare generously makes a second wine ‘Sinopie’, which he de-classifies to Chianti (it is a Chianti Rùfina). It is pure and fresh, made to be a joyous everyday wine and that is exactly what it is. Cesare’s Chianti Rùfina 2013 was from an untypically hot vintage and the wine bears more resemblance to a Chianti Classico or a Rosso di Montalcino than to Rùfina. The unusual nature of the vintage led to no Riserva being made, just this one seriously good wine. Andrea’s Barbera Surí deserves a special mention, the 2016 is so poised, bright cassis and brambly fruit, I used to joke ‘if you don’t like this, there is nothing I can do for you’, so true this year.

Medium to Full Bodied Red Wines Giordano did not make his top wines in 2014 and in consequence the grand vin of the vintage was the Merlot dominated Ca’ Emo, a wonderful, assured and complex wine, traditional Claret style with a wave of ripe fruit running through it. The Agnese Rubido 2011 is a fine Super-Tuscan that does comparatively little damage to the wallet whilst providing intense jammy fruit and mature porcini and leather flavours. Righetti’s ripasso ‘Campolieti’ stands out as exceptional: fresh and complex with tell-tale date and raison flavours giving away its Amarone parentage. Also from the North East we have a trio of wines from Bulfon: the Piculìt Neri is the finest cut with its precise cassis and dark forest fruit: the Cordenossa is bigger, more ripe and spicy, very easy drinking; the Pecòl Ros combines the spice of Refosco with the exuberant fruit of Cjanorìe, there are so many flavours to enjoy in this bottle. The Lis Fadis Rosso 2014 is a wine that has only been made once, and whilst it shares a stylesheet with Bulfon, this is a wine with much more gravitas and weight. The 2015 Chianti Classico from Le Miccine is an absolute classic. Paola works with great vision, her wines are sure-footed and immaculate. Likewise, Ferrante’s 2014 Aglianico Palazzo is about as good as it gets, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, ripe tannins, light footed power. We are always on the lookout for magnificent (and affordable) Nebbiolo, which is not an easy task. I have spent years scouring the hills of North West Italy and this year it is you who has the impossible task of choosing whether to leave anything behind. Matteo Ascheri’s 2014 San Giacomo is sublime silky tannins, deep damson and sloe fruit shot through with dried rose, held with mature rounded tannins. Newcomer to our list, Le Marie, is high in the western hills where granitic soils give the Debarges a fine mineral tannic structure, a touch of iron alongside rose petal and peppered bramble fruit. Andrea has made the most of the 2013 vintage and his Tre Ponti just controls the rippling, brooding berry fruit. This is a big, gorgeous wine. Another new producer (for us) Socré, whose Barbaresco wines are magnificent, Marco and Rosella’s Nebbiolo tastes of beautiful, bright cherry fruit and has the silky tannin so treasured in these hills. To continue down the Nebbiolo road (which reappears in ‘Full Bodied Reds’ and even in the Dry Rosé Sparkling’…) we stray into the Alto-Piemonte where the villages of Bramaterra and Lessona provide ethereal, intense and somehow romantic wines shaped by altitude shared with volcanic slopes.

Medium to Full Bodied Red Wines We are fortunate to have Colombera e Garella’s wines, a tiny estate which calls on the experience of Carlo, the energy of his sons Giacomo and Guglielmo and stardust of winemaker and local hero, Christiano Garella. Their 2013 wines are spectacular, the Bramaterra has a historic inclusion of Vespolina and Croatina which the Lessona does not. Both are full, intense, mineral and floral; perfect wines with fatty meats and cheeses. Next up is one of Barolos most under-rated wines, Matteo Pisapola: the vines lie on the borders of La Morra and Verduno, where the sandier soils encourage an early drinking style. Matteo goes with the flow and allows the open, generous character of his wine to come through resulting in wonderful balance, intricate ripe fruit, delicately nuanced. A very attractive wine. In the North East there is little Nebbiolo, Corvina dominates the hills of Valpolicella, where it is bent into so many styles, Amarone being the best known. My favourites are the vineyard wines that have no need of appassimento (dried grapes) or ripasso (a second fermentation with dried grape skins). Bionda’s Valpolicella Casal Vegri is in the vanguard of a wave of Burgundy inspired wines, the fruit is so fine and tannins so perfect, it is a masterpiece. To think that there was a time when I was tempted to broaden the geographical net to include Burgundy. Fortunately for me, learning French can return to being a distant nightmare. In truth, I have never seriously considered returning to Bordeaux either, try Giordano’s Irenèo to see why: the slopes of the Colli Euganei have been planted with Cabernet for centuries. The vines are perfectly adapted and on a mix of volcanic and maritime bedrock, it is an excellent terroir. Irenèo is a proper, old style Cabernet Sauvignon, full cassis fruit, Earl Grey tannins, restrained and fresh. Cosimi’s Sassello almost walks you through the joy of Sangiovese, loose berry fruit, dark cherry and spice, a very good wine – it is easy to understand why Rosso di Montalcino is getting quite a following. To quote Paolo, ‘the 2015 Agramante is the wine I have been hoping for’. The age of the vines, climate and experience conspired to make the perfect red. Open it nice early, it is young and perhaps the best Puglian wine I have ever tasted. To finish, two wines from high on the slopes of Etna, Costanzo’s vineyards yield a miserly crop from ancient bush vines of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccino. The wines are significant world class reds: the Mofete is an altruistic gift from Mimmo and Valeria, fine, balanced mineral fruit. Their ‘Nero di Sei’ was designed for the long haul, it is maturing into a remarkable wine, a profound pleasure.

Full Bodied Red Wines Brace yourself, I hope you are thirsty! This is a seriously impressive line up from biodynamic, air-dried Cabernet Franc to twelve year old Barolo and everything in-between. There are some properly aged wines in this section and everything listed is, for my taste, ready to drink. We open with Sampietrana’s Squinzano and Salice Salentino, updated classics where some extended ageing has tamed the anarchic super-ripe Negro Amaro, making for rather well-mannered, if robust wines. Also from the heal comes Paolo Petrilli’s Guerro, a massive wine forged from Nero di Troia. It has thrown an impressive crust, unavoidable when no filtration is employed, so truly it is best to decant this masterpiece. Moving north we have the return of a very old friend, Camillo Montori’s Fonte Cupa which, put simply, is one of the great monovarietal Montepulciano wines. Immaculate old school brilliance, the Alvis drophead of Italian reds (I have some Riserva on reservation for our Wine Club). From the North we have Giordano’s Forzatè, a remarkably skilful interpretation of Raboso, a grape legendary for its contrary character. Here, layers of dark savoury fruit are peppered with spice and porcini, perfect with a winter stew. The Palustrel has sweet tasting, ripe minty fruit, almost the opposite of the Forzatè (and one of our wines of the year). High above Lake Garda the Zeni family have made a name for their Teroldego: the Schwarzhof is from a high vineyard on granitic rock where the fermentation is in open barrels, the depth and character is extraordinary. The Lealbere is comparatively lighter, more rounded perhaps, wonderful blueberry and cassis fruit. I must mention Broilo’s Schioppettino with its hallmark peppery fruit, one of those wines that must be experienced. Their winemaking was natural before the term was even conceived. Lis Fadis, just around the corner, have taken a look at these ancient hills with new eyes. It is a tiny cantina where no expense has been spared and these ancient clones of Refosco, Merlot and Schioppettino are yielding rich, polished, unforgettable wines. Certainly a name to watch, the Bergul is a snap at the price. Castell’in Villa is a magnificent estate on the southern edge of Chianti Classico. Coralia’s Chianti Classico is a magnificent wine: camomile, clove and tarragon, black cherry and strawberry, a classic insider wine. Her Riserva is quite epic, Coralia criticised it for being too Brunello-like, I

Full Bodied Red Wines fail to see that as a bad thing. I am rather fond of Brunello. This year we have Rudi’s Poggiolo 2012, one of my favourite vintages, supple with some restraint, very pure and correct. There is no mistaking the next Sangiovese, Cesare’s Rùfina Riserva. It is one of the highest Sangiovese vineyards in Tuscany and the vines really have to battle to attain the ripeness required to make this aristocratic Chianti. A blind tasting may lead you into Burgundy, this is a wine that combines fullness with beautiful floral, delicate elements. Just below the uber-fashionable Bolgheri lies the largely undiscovered Val di Cornia where we have fallen for the honest artisan wines of Sant’ Agnese. Without a ‘big name' to sell his wines, Paolo must over-deliver so far as quality is concerned, which is very good for us! His Libatio is bold and precise with a serious attack of black cherry fruit; the Spirto has a remarkable intensity and brightness, firm cassis, strawberry and balsamic-laced fruit. A genuinely profound example of coastal Merlot. Inland from Vesuvius are the hills surrounding the village of Taurasi, from which di Marzo makes a beautifully judged Aglianico: full-bodied, smooth tannins, fresh detailed fruit, very fine. The vines in Taurasi are picked as late as those in the Veneto and Piemonte, but in the Veneto the best grapes are dried and converted to Amarone. The Righetti family have long been masters of traditional Amarone, always releasing genuine mouth-filling wines with fruit cake and berry flavours; their 2013 is the best they have produced. To complete this list is a small part of our Piemonte selection: Andrea’s flagship Barbera is amongst the best from the village of Nizza, the wines are a perfect reflection of the man: generous and inviting, honest and thoughtful. The Dedicato is the big one, right on the cusp whereas the Dani is more relaxed, not so extreme - I cannot recommend both highly enough. To finish we have a new Barolo from Saffirio. Sara makes immaculate wine with great respect paid to the traditions of Piemonte. This is a full supreme wine that is quite forward and very enjoyable right now. However, if you want to splash out a little, I have held back a few bottles of Brovia’s Barolo Ca’ Mia 2005, it is huge and magnificent, the exact blueprint of how a twelve year old Barolo from Serralunga should taste.

Sweet white wines A perceived wisdom pigeon-holes sweet wines into being a companion to the dessert, or somehow a gauche choice, both are unjust and inaccurate. This little selection is fabulously flexible, covering a broad spectrum of tastes and styles. We start with Villa Giada’s perfectly frivolous interpretations of Moscato d’Asti and Montecchia’s immensely popular Venetian version, the ‘Fior d’Arancio’. All three share a lowish alcohol, lively fizz and pure, irresistible fresh grapey flavours that will leave your mouth refreshed and ready for the next onslaught. I recommend these with fruit, millefeuille or sorbets - quite fun with a drop of Limoncello too, we call that a ‘Lemon Sherbet’ at home. Very lovely. The still sweet wines are all made in tiny quantities, they are technically difficult to produce and the process is notoriously unprofitable. They are made by romantic folk with little regard for a balance sheet. These wines encapsulate the essence of their vineyard, revealing a lush density of exaggerated fruit, a nervous vein of acidity and a gloriously fragrant nose. It is a style that marvellously complements both cheese and puddings. However unfashionable, I recommend you try these before a meal with pâté or some deliciously silly finger foods. Santa Vittoria’s Conforta is from experimental grape varieties within a part of the vineyard that is often botrytis affected. The hand selected grapes are then rested in a chest freezer (like the one you may have at home) to create a partial botrytis and partial ice-wine. The result is remarkably light and elegant, infused with rose, apricot and spice. Col Sandago’s Prosecco Passito is a little weightier, more honeyed with a touch of marmalade and vanilla. Santa Vittoria’s Vin Santo is a caramelised, nutty and toffee delight as opposed to Vicentini’s Soave Recioto that is honeyed, fresh, with herb and almond, lifted by pink grapefruit flavours. The STELL has remarkable depth and richness, it has tawny port-like qualities. In case you thought it couldn’t get any better, we have Castell’in Villa’s absurdly rare Vin Santo which spends ten years in tiny casks before being bottled. Considering the time it takes to produce, this is the cheapest wine experience on our list! The Donna Daria is magnificent, the first ever Fior d’Arancio passito to be awarded the hallowed ‘three glasses’ by the Gambero Rosso. Hints of Turkish delight and hazelnut latte flow through depths of caramel and orange, no food is needed, this is an experience in itself. The Cuore is a ten year solera of Donna Daria, a folly and, like Giordano, a one-off.

Sweet red wines Finally, our Port, well… not exactly Port, no fortification here, just naturally aspirated genius. The passito (drying of the grapes before pressing) releases the exuberant side of these wines. Mancinelli’s Lacrima Re Sole offers depths of fruit with lavender, rose and violet. I am unreliably informed that in combination with a fine chocolate it can induce a ‘Harry met Sally’ moment. When the mighty Python coined ‘and now for something completely different’ they may well have had Vernaccia Nera di Serrapetrona in mind. Sparkling red wine, made from at least 40% dried Vernaccia Nera grown around the hamlet of Serrapetrona, which could be inhabited by Asterix and Obelix given their total self-belief and disregard for global tastes. It is a brilliant wine and Quacquarini needs our support against the tide of zombie wine drinkers! For the record it is magnificent with Christmas cake or Panforte.

Grappa Emma and I genuinely love quality grappa so we import only the best; after all there is nothing better with a late game of backgammon. I have enjoyed some first-class entertainment from some fantastically talented mixologists in Italy, they very nearly convinced me that Grappa is an essential cocktail element, however, they are wrong. Zeni’s artisan distillery is racking up the awards for their grappa, the Teroldego being the most celebrated, very smooth. The Nosiola feels lighter and fresher with finest flavours of hazelnut. Stefano Mancinelli is our other extremely rare winemaker with his own legal sill. His Lacrima and Verdicchio grappas both mimic the essential elements found in the wines and are very beautiful, soothing spirits indeed.

Gin e Amici For the past three years we have been enormously proud to represent Sacred distillery. Ian Hart is the most precise and brilliant distiller who sets the standard by which to judge other micro-distilleries. In truth, we saw little point in joining the gin frenzy, then in 2014 we started experimenting and our resulting pop-up bar became a legend for its uncompromising cocktails. Naturally our stock has followed this interest, though the problem of where to store the various styles of glasses has become an issue. Our sharpener of choice has long been either a Grappa or Corretto. Next up, the King of cocktails: The Negroni. Equal parts of Gin, bitters and Vermouth Rosso poured over ice with the oil from orange peel run around the inside of the glass, delicious. We have Sacred’s Rosehip and Spiced Vermouth in stock, however Ian has kindly created a Bottle Aged Negroni. Work done. Easy. Perhaps the ultimate post-feast digestivo is Sacred’s Christmas Pudding Gin, straight out of the freezer in shot glasses for me, Emma preference is on the rocks. As a chef’s helper, I recommend Sacred’s Dry London Gin with your choice of tonic (I am not getting into that argument). Warner Edwards Botanical Gin makes a lovely minty G&T, even better in a Gimlet. The pink Victoria’s Rhubarb is popular with ginger beer, better with bitter lemon though. Finally, the pyromaniac Cameron brothers whose enthusiasm remains unchecked even if age has calmed their excesses. From the DIFI valley their foraging has unearthed the most fascinating small batch, craft spirit yet. The Pollination Gin is from springtime botanicals, the Hibernation from autumn botanicals as well as being aged in a gift from Dirk Niepoort, an old white port barrel. Use the tonic sparingly. A few days in Sardinia this summer and I have a taste for Mirto. The red version (not the white-berried variety), local mirto berries macerated in alcohol. In Carloforte the time of day seemed no barrier to consumption; they will never know, but it is also an effective way to warm a chilly afternoon. Arangiu is made the same way but from locally grown red oranges, I didn’t spot it on holiday but have subsequently discovered that with two parts grappa and a squeeze of lime makes for an interesting take on a Margarita. Lastly, a Marsala from Martinez – not the most Sicilian sounding name, but the wine is authentic, great value and very good (we have been selling it quietly for years).

Bat and Bottle Wine Club

Our Wine Club was shortlisted by the International Wine Challenge (against the Wine Society) for the accolade of ‘Best Wine Club in the UK 2017'. We didn’t win, but this was a hard-fought category and as we left many a household name in our wake, which was brilliant, we feel quite humbled. We created the Wine Club to overcome a frustrating aspect of my job: leaving fantastic wines at the vineyard, just because the quantities available are too small to put them on our wine list. Rather than abandoning these curios, our club members now enjoy tasting unusual and idiosyncratic wines so often only available to vineyard visitors. So, you get to experience the surprises and delights associated with Christmas all year round. So, why not give yourself a proper gift: membership to our nearly award winning Wine Club. There is no subscription charge, your regular payment is simply for the wines that are delivered every quarter. You also receive your hand-made folder to collect your notes in, 10% off the bottle price on all other purchases, and first dibs on bin ends and other offers. Choose between Conspirators and Vini Curiosity (or don’t choose between them and go for the double). Email (emma@batwine.uk) or ring us with your details and Club preference.

Page 43 | 01572 759735 | batwine.uk

Conspirators “Everyday eccentricities for the adventurous” Conspirator wines give instant drinking pleasure, can be served on any occasion and are wines which you are unlikely to have tasted outside their home country, simply because the production quantities are so small. I have chosen them for their uniqueness and interest, their quality and their character. They will be enjoyed by those who want to travel a bit further along their wine path.

Cases cost £150 and consist of 4 different wines (3 bottles of each) and members can choose from mixed, red or white.

Vini Curiosity “Rare and exotic vinous experiences” Vini Curiosity wines are extremely unusual, absurdly rare and have a real sense of terroir. I have chosen them for their one-of-a-kind character and their ability to surprise. If you are vi-curious, relish wines that are far from run-of-the-mill and are happy to venture into the unknown in your wine selections, join Vini Curiosity. Cases cost £159 and are made up of 6 different wines.
