Publishing is one of the UK’s largest creative industries. It is in the process of adapting its creative strategy and business to the challenges and opportunities that digital technology brings.

Cross-fertilization of creative ideas, skills, and industry knowledge between universities and publishing companies has never been so important. The publishing industry needs people who can think creatively across a range of media, platforms, and markets to develop and promote innovative and engaging content. Why choose this course? Publishing involves conceptualising, shaping and producing content for books and magazines (print and digital); multimedia websites, tablets and mobile apps; ebooks and social media. Students learn to wrangle text, image and video; ideas, stories and information into meaningful and engaging forms. This innovative course will add a practical dimension to your study and enhance your employability by helping you develop a raft of transferable skills and a knock-out portfolio. Staff are experienced publishers and continue to practice, enabling continuous course updating and access to industry networks. You can opt to take Publishing as a Major, Joint or Minor subject within a Combined Award. About the course All students take a 40-credit core publishing module in each of the three years. These teach the essentials of contemporary publishing: writing and editing copy; creating professional blogs, websites and integrated social media; researching, developing and making digital publications and 01

presenting the results. Additional modules offer the chance to specialise, deepening your knowledge, and to work on larger personal projects.

Sample modules INCLUDE: Year 1: Introduction to Publishing; Copywriting and Text Editing (core); Digital Natives. Year 2: Contemporary Publishing: The Business of Publishing (core); Writing for New Media. Year 3: Digital Publishing (core); Professional Writing, Food Writing and Editing. Students work on live projects with organisations such as the National Trust and X Media Lab, the international digital think tank, and run the BSU student magazine MILK. You will learn through lectures, collaborative workshops, guided project work, tutorials and software training. The course base, the Publishing Lab, has excellent industry standard facilities including Mac suites with the latest software, and a range of camera equipment, iPads, iPhones and Kindles. Optional Graphics modules are taught at one of our other campuses. We also run industry skills tests (introductory and intermediate levels) in copyediting and InDesign layout software. Careers Publishing skills in editorial, production, marketing and digital, and collaborative working and project management skills are extremely transferable.
