What do you get when you cross a plumber with an insurance underwriter? One might never fathom the answer. However, thirty-three years ago, that’s exactly where Spath Jewelers got its start. In 1986 Gene and Tina Spath decided to take a giant leap of faith and start a small town Jewelry Store. According to Tina, they didn’t know much about jewelry, but what they did know was that God is good, how to work hard and take care of people. Since then, what has formed is a business that blurs the lines between family, friends, customers and employees. Like every good story it all starts with a journey. To give you insight on why Spath Jewelers treats its customers like family, you have to start at the beginning. In 1965, Cuba was in unrest. The government was in a turbulent sea of military and political takeover. Tina’s parents uprooted their daughter with a final destination of America. The laws in the United States were such at the time that the only way they could come into the country was to send Tina first, who could hopefully “claim” her parents later. “I came by myself to a foreign country, to a foreign people, without knowing the language,” Tina said. She was only ten years old at the time. Gene Spath,on the other hand, grew up in Chicago, Illinois, in a family of six. Starting at just five years old, Gene became a milk boy. “I would wake up at 3:00 in the morning to deliver milk bottles to the neighborhood, and then go to school after that,” Gene said. Looking back he explained “I was so young that I couldn’t even read the bottles on the truck, I just knew them by the color: white or chocolate.” He even remembers taking naps on the milk truck because he would be exhausted from such a long day. After high school, Gene worked in the trades as a plumber. Little did Gene know how this type of work ethic and perseverance would eventually pay off. Fast forward years later, and in 1986 Spath Jewelers opened its doors. The Spath family however, looked much different with the addition of three children running around: Brian, Christopher, and Emily. “Our children grew

up in the store. We had nothing to start, but we had each other.,” Tina said. Gene and Tina had sold everything they had in Illinois to start Spath Jewelers in Bartow while living in Ft. Meade. “We didn’t have a house to stay in, so my cousin Juan Carlos offered us to live with him. We would sleep, all six of us, in one room and drive to Bartow everyday to the store. With the jewelry store still in the making, Gene worked two jobs: jewelry store during the day, and the IMC phosphate mine at night. They didn’t know if it would work, but they knew they just had to keep trying. When walking into Spath Jewelers, one can’t help but feel as if you’re being welcomed into a home. This is a home however, where you are greeted by knowledgeable staff, and are surrounded by sparkling diamonds. Every one of the staff members at Spath Jewelers is sent through an accreditation jewelry program. “What makes us different is our people and the experience,” said Emily. “We try very hard to take care of everything for you.” Spath Jewelers also has four jewelers on staff and specialize in custom design. “We have built some pretty mind-blowing things over the years. Custom design is very difficult, but I love the challenge it gives you,” Emily said. “Jewelry represents precious moments in people lives, we’re honored that people allow Spath Jewelers to be a part of their lives,” she added. Emily also explained that the Spaths travel to Antwerp, Belgium, the diamond capital of the world, to broker diamonds for the store. Another phase in the Spath journey is how in November of 2002, Spath Jewelers took another leap of faith and opened an additional location in Valrico. Son Brian, has assumed operations for Spath Jewelers Valrico store for the past 15 years. Brian is a graduate gemologist, which is the highest degree one can achieve in the jewelry industry. Brother Christopher Spath pursued a law degree and worked at the State Attorney Office in Polk county before transferring over to personal injury in the private practice world.

Emily married Matthew Clark in 2009. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Matt had endless trails to hike, waterfalls to climb and mountains to snowboard. However, what he did not see much of was the sun. After completing his first four years of college, he decided to spend his final term in the National Student Exchange program. Venturing across the country, he ended up at the University of South Florida. The goal was to maybe get a tan for once in his life before returning home to Oregon. Emily said that God had different plans, and Matthew met his soulmate on an unplanned sneaky blind date. Matt now calls Bartow his home and in 2013, the couple started to assume the main operations for Spath Jewelers of Bartow. “Matt is such an amazing asset to us, he is the engine that keeps all the moving parts running,” Emily said. Faith and family are the key ingredients to the Spath journey. Emily refers to a quote from Colin Powell that says it all. “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” In the Spath’s case, the dream came true, and has made Spath Jewelers a staple to the Bartow and Polk County area. Diversity Luncheon to Promote Equality To reaffirm its commitment to racial and ethnic equality, the City of Bartow’s Community Relations Committee (CRC) will hold a Diversity Luncheon on September 19, 2018, at noon, at the Bartow Civic Center in conjunction with Bartow’s Race Equality Week, the week of September 16-22, 2018. The week is set aside by Bartow’s City Commission to spotlight racial and ethnic equality and justice issues that confront people every day. “There are daily reminders to us all of how important this issue still is in America, and that promoting racial and ethnic equality and ending racism and discrimination requires awareness, commitment, and action,” said Gloria Washington, Co-Chairman of the CRC. “This is an opportunity for Bartow to stand up and be counted in an ongoing effort to make sure our community fosters racial and ethnic equality and harmony.” The annual Diversity Award will be presented to a business or organization and an individual at the luncheon. Nominations are being accepted for the award. This year’s keynote speaker is Polk County Schools Superintendent Jackie Byrd, who began her career in education more than 25 years ago in Jacksonville. Mrs. Byrd has served as a teacher, school principal and district administrator. In 2005, she received recognition for increasing student achievement at one of Duval County’s most challenged elementary schools through innovative ideas, professional development and community involvement. The school’s overall academic achievement rose from a D grade to an A grade within three years. She was promoted to key positions within the school district. She was responsible for overseeing elementary turnaround schools in Duval County. Mrs. Byrd also served as Chief of Schools for Duval County. In 2013, Mrs. Byrd moved to Polk County where she was named Deputy Superintendent. She was sworn in as Superintendent on Feb. 23, 2016. “Polk County Public Schools is excited to forge new pathways to reach our students and help them achieve their highest potential,” Mrs. Byrd said. “Our district covers a geographic area about the size of Rhode Island with students who come from diverse backgrounds, each child with an innate curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Our key mission is simple: to provide a high quality education for all students.” Mrs. Byrd received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of North Florida and her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Jacksonville University. Honey Bee Festival / Annual Craft Fair Set For November 10 Bartow’s annual Craft Fair is in its fourth year as the Honey Bee Festival. Main Street Bartow, Inc. has once again partnered with the Ridge Beekeepers Association to bring a day full of education and fun, along with the local craft show the community looks forward to annually, on Saturday, November 10, 2018. The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in downtown Bartow, and is sponsored by Main Street Bartow, Inc. and the City of Bartow. Applications are currently being accepted. The Craft Fair will feature handmade, all-season crafts. Space size is 12 feet by 12 feet, and there is a $55.00 entry fee. An area with children’s activities will be included, and food will be available for purchase from vendors on the street as well as from Bartow’s downtown restaurants. An open car show and an antique fair will also be part of the event. Tour de Tow Cycling Event Set for September 22 Main Street Bartow, Inc. & Bartow Cycling Events are gearing up for the Tour de Tow Scenic Bike Tour on September 22nd, 2018. The largest organized road tour in Polk County, Tour de Tow is an on-road cycling tour along the scenic back roads of southern Polk County. Gently rolling roads take our cyclists across the Peace River Basin through expansive citrus groves and around old Florida backroads. The event provides great cycling support via fully-stocked rest stops with friendly volunteers, Sheriff’s Deputy escort, trailing vehicles for assistance and aid, course photographer and great food provided by some of Bartow’s finest restaurants. But wait!... there’s more, this is the only ride that gives the opportunity to one of the participating cyclists the chance to be the featured poster cyclist from registrations pulled the day of the ride. The winner is photographed on the course at some point, and has a logo designed by LillyCat Design Studio with their image becoming the ride logo on print media and the ride shirt. The cyclist also receives a wall hanging with the featured logo. All of the above is what keeps cyclists coming back to experience hometown hospitality! This year’s ride will feature a 65- & 35-mile road tour and a 17-mile family fun ride. Registration can be accessed on hakuapp.com/bloomin-bike-ride, or you can download a registration form from the BartowCylingEvents.com website or register the day of the race. Tour de Tow’s Power Pedalers program gives bicycles to kids who would like a bike, but cannot afford one. This is a great way to give back to the children of the community, as well as a way to help them cultivate a healthy lifestyle and a love for cycling. A special “thanks” goes to Walmart and Heartland for Children for helping to make this program a success. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. Tour de Tow begins with a special presentation at 7:50 a.m. of new Power Pedalers bikes with the ride taking off at 8:00 a.m. The staging area will be located on Central Avenue and Main Street.
