I’m smiling more than ever.

Tony, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person When D.A.P. opened its dental clinic, I didn’t know it was one-of-a-kind in the county. I’ve been living with HIV for a long time, so I was just happy to have people nearby who really understood my oral care needs. I’ve been a D.A.P. client since 1994, so I’d already had great experiences with my doctor, my case manager, and my home health team. But this dental clinic staff is remarkable — from the smiling receptionist to my gentle dentist and everyone else in between. Who knew you could actually LIKE going to the dentist?!

This isn’t your grandmother’s sewing circle.

Rick, Larry, Bill & Hugh D.A.P. clients

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Many years ago, a D.A.P. staff member thought that quilting, knitting, crocheting, and other needlecrafts might help ease hand tremors and neuropathy, which sometimes accompany HIV infection. Since then, we’ve created hundreds of handmade baby blankets and teddy bears for 100 Women members to distribute to migrant farm women. We’ve also organized quilt raffles and holiday ornament fairs to raise money for D.A.P. Along the way, we’ve been offering each other something invaluable…a nonjudgmental, supportive place each week where there’s always a smile, a joke, or a shoulder to lean on.

I get a healing energy from my Reiki sessions. Ron, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Treating my HIV takes enough medication already — I didn’t want to take even more meds for the stomach upset I was feeling. So I tried Reiki as an alternative. With each session, I feel my body healing in a new way. The Reiki master’s hands rarely touch me, even lightly. But he seems to channel this amazing power into my organs. He says it’s the universe, not him. Whatever it is, I feel like each session is an important step toward being an even healthier person.

Almost anything I need is right out my front door. Ross, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Living on just Social Security, my beautiful, subsidized apartment on D.A.P.’s campus has been a lifesaver. It even has solar collectors to reduce my electric bill! But best of all, my doctor, dentist, case manager, pharmacy—just about anything I could need—are only about 500 feet away when I open my front door. For the first time in years, my T-cells are up, I have dental care again, and my future seems bright.

I got my life back online.

Scott, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person My addiction led me into homelessness and I thought I had nowhere to turn. But D.A.P. helped me see there was a way back, if I was willing to do the work. Now, I have five years of sobriety, have finished four years of college with two degrees and a promising career...but best of all, I have peace-of-mind again. Now, I’m volunteering my time here in D.A.P.’s computer lab because it’s time to “pay it forward” to others who might need a little help. Just like I did.

Volunteering has given me 6,000 hours of smiles Joel, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Medical issues and depression pretty much kept me homebound —until I decided to give back a little bit of what I’ve received. Since Revivals has been supporting the mission of D.A.P. by providing a big part of its revenue, I knew it would be a great way for me to get back into the swing of things, while doing something really worthwhile. Now, I’ve logged 6,000 hours as a volunteer at the Palm Springs Revivals store. And every smile I get from our customers tells me I’m helping to make a difference!

A good meal can put a smile on your face. Ray D.A.P. Community Center Manager

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Our Community Center is jumping with activity...our clients help put on and participate in all kinds of educational and social activities. Our twice-monthly cooking class combines bits of both because I get to show them how they can make great, no-fuss meals for very little money, while keeping a sanitary kitchen. And they walk out with the recipes to try these nutritious and healthy dishes at home. But not before we share this meal together!

I’m a good cook but sometimes my pantry is bare. Kathy, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person My case manager says that “food is medicine” because a healthy diet...along with medication and my doctor visits...is an important part of keeping my HIV in-check. Since I can’t work anymore, it’s been a life-saver to live right across the parking lot from D.A.P., in a comfy apartment with my own kitchen. Their monthly food voucher helps fill my cabinets...and my refrigerator loves the fruits and vegetables from their Farmer’s Market.

I fought my way back from addiction. Carl, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Like everyone, I’ve made lots of mistakes in my life. One of the biggest was letting alcohol and crystal meth consume me for a time. It led me into unsuccessful relationships, homelessness, and even ignoring my HIV medication therapy, causing me to lose one of my eyes. With the help of a counselor at Desert AIDS Project, I’m in recovery and am proud of my accomplishments at College of the Desert. I may have lost an eye... but I’ve never seen more clearly than I do today.

After 30 years, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy to quit smoking.

Keaton & Hugh, D.A.P. clients

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Sad to say...we loved smoking, even though we knew it wasn’t good for us. But when one of us developed a mild case of COPD, the respiratory condition, it was time for both of us to say good-bye to nicotine forever. The six-week smoking cessation classes at D.A.P. helped us learn techniques and options that have allowed us to finally say, “We’re EX-smokers!”

Healing myself through yoga comes from helping others.

Chuck, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person I was a kid from Arkansas, living the “Broadway Baby” dream as a dancer in New York City, when I was diagnosed with HIV. After moving to California and finding my T cells had dropped to a grand total of three, yoga and meditation became a big part of my healing. That’s why I love some of the alternatives to western medicine that D.A.P. offers and why I’ve also been a yoga teacher there for years.

Acupuncture helps me manage my pain and tunes me up.

Miguel, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person Those little needles give me such relief, the way they reduce stress and anxiety, not to mention pain. I believe they activate my body’s electrical grid in a way that helps keep my viral load suppressed. It may not be for everyone but acupuncture has worked for me for 25 years. I’m grateful D.A.P. offers it as a complement to the primary and HIV-specialty care I get at their clinic.
