Andrew and Deb manage and share the everyday running of the business together. Deb also takes care of the book-keeping and admin tasks as well as stock control whilst Andrew works on much of the behind the scenes planning and organisation for future endeavours combined with the maintenance of both the machines and grounds. He also oversees our OH&S for the business. Our son, David assists us both with our tasks and decision making as well as the general running of the business – he is also one of our main wood oven pizza cooks. Our daughter, Lauren is a qualified graphic designer and works one day a week as our main designer of our web page, social media and she also handles our advertising and brochures. Our youngest son Ryan, who has autism,

We all bring our own strengths to the business which has worked really well for us. We also have a son Matt, who isn’t involved in the business but loves to come and have a bowl!

What are the challenges of working with family? We are fortunate to have a good working relationship – in saying that, we are all different personalities so we don’t always agree!

We have learnt to respect each others differences and appreciate our individual strengths. The biggest challenge for me is running a business that is open 7 days a week – it makes getting together as a family outside of work extremely difficult so quality time for us, our children and their partners is special.

We are really blessed with an awesome crew of staff who are like family – they support us and make coming to work each day something to look forward to. They have enabled us to celebrate some significant family occasions together such as weddings, engagements and 21st birthdays which can be difficult in our business.

Agrihaul began in 1989 as a small agricultural carrier carting grain, gypsum, cow manure, cleaning chicken sheds and selling the manure mainly to market gardeners and vineyards. Over the past 10 years the poultry industry has gone through quite an expansion and as a result we have come to specialise almost entirely on manures mainly

Even though we aerobicly compost on average 7500 cubic metres for the vegetable, almond and citrus industry, the majority now goes to broadacre cereal farmers, in the Mid North and York Peninsula districts. What is your competetive advantage as a family business? The advantages of having a family business are that when things go a bit pear-shaped you can call on family to step in and help. Even though we don’t employ either of our daughters, they are never too shy to jump in a machine or operate a tele-handler. Truck driving is not out of the question either as our youngest daughter is an MC licensed driver. What are the challenges of work with family? The hardest part of being a family business is trying to keep a work-life balance as business can easily overrun your life.

Following in the footsteps of his father in 63 successful years of business, Craig is hands on - machine operator, truck driver, organiser, supervisor and repair man. Licensed as a general concreter foundation contractor but these days

try to limit myself to de-construct, civil, preparation and earthworks. 43 years combined experience, father and son business for the last 8 years. Joshua, my son, served his civil contractors apprenticeship with me and received two awards for excellence, one state and one federal. As a successful business, what advice could you give to other family businesses? Trust, co-operation and communication are the key with a fair bit of patience thrown in and a lot of give and take. What is your most memorable experience to date? Pouring a house slab behind the old Hutchins Hospital, Gawler on what was to be a fine sunny day when we recieved a 40mm of rain deludge. We worked to well after dark, 19 hours straight then finished the slab successfully the following day. Another 10 hours.

We are a locally based business servicing the Barossa and Mid North area. We specialise in a range of Commercial, Industrial and Domestic Projects along with all types of Joinery work ranging from Solid Timber Windows and Doors to custom made Kitchens. What’s the history of your business? How did it begin? Juncken Builders and Joinery started in 2016 when myself and wife, Tracey bought the Building and Joinery side from CO Juncken Builders and relocated to 4 Kalimna Rd Nuriootpa. We steadily improved the joinery workshop and

With this project we employed all local trades and suppliers to help make this a locally built project. The response from the client on handover was overwhelming to see. Their new premises is first class and to see them enjoying the large warehouse and office area is extremely satisfying. This is one project that I will remember. Who or what inspires you to operate the business? In business the people that inspire me are the clients. To see their reaction when handing over a new addition or a new kitchen and knowing that your team has completed this for them. WQ&PS are the number one dealer in South Australia for Franklin Electric, the pioneers of the submersible motor and a worldwide leader in pump design and manufacture. The company was founded by Lindsay Browne following his tenure of 10 years as a contractor and employee of a Barossa-based irrigation business. In 2012 Water Quality & Pumping Solutions commenced business operations servicing both retail and commercial customers mainly in the irrigation sector. As the company name suggests, the aim of the business was to become

Another of Lindsay’s sons, Connor has also joined the family business. Connor had also been previously involved in the irrigation industry for the past 10 years both here in the Barossa and W.A. In 2017, Mat Wilson joined the company. Mat has been involved in the irrigation industry for around 12 years both in the Barossa and Adelaide. In addition, the company has also employed another trainee, Josh Kerr. Josh will also be completing Certificate III in Water Operations specialising in Water Industry Treatment.

What’s your motto as a business operator?

Lindsay states, “I don’t profess to know everything about moving water or treating it, that’s why I work closely with engineers and professionals who do. Coupled with our operational and hands-on experience, we make a formidable team.”

Tell us a bit about your business & it’s history. Chateau Dorrien is a small family owned business, our name is synonymous with warm Honey Meads, Liqueurs & Fortifieds. Over 34 years we have faced many challenges, due to perseverance, hard work and the popularity of our Speciality products we run a very successful Cellar Door in the heart of the Barossa. We’re open 7 days for tastings & sales , 10 am till 5.00 pm. We started from humble wine making beginnings in the old cellar behind the Stockwell Pub in the late 70s. In a huge leap of faith my late husband Fernando Martin and l purchased the iconic Seppelts property at Dorrien midway between Nuri and Tanunda. After opening the doors in 1985 Chateau Dorrien soon became a well

known tourist hotspot for visitors from all over the world. We had markets , petanque courts, a restaurant with a licensed bar, souvenirs and a Heritage Gallery. So many fond memories. Our focus now is to continue producing wonderful , quality Mead Liqueurs, Fortifieds and Wines. The family is looking forward to an exciting future. Which family members work in the business, what is their role? I will always love catching up with friends and customers on busy weekends, but my primary role these days is running the business from behind the scenes. My son Ray is our wine and liqueur maker operating from our production facility at Twin Valley Estate in Lyndoch. My son Vic, grandson Levi along with, almost family, Monica, are the welcoming faces at Chateau Dorrien Cellar Door. I also have four other grandchildren born in Tanunda so who knows what the future holds? With family in business when a job needs doing you just switch hats and get on with it. Truro Agencies is a family owned second generation business based on Rural and Farm supplies. Over many years a strong customer base has been built on the business’ focus of supply, installation and service of Wool Shearing and Pressing equipment in an area that stretches far outside a normal local customer base.

Which family members work in the business, what is their role? Taking over from Daryl’s parents Robert and Rosie, Kristy and Daryl manage and run Truro Agencies.

Robert still continues to help with the Woolpress service side of the business and Kristy’s dad, Trevor also works a couple days a week in the shop, along with other staff members Donna Lehmann and Linda Doecke.

What is your most memorable experience to date? Watching and listening to our three children add their own ‘sales pitch’ to conversations when they are here occasionally on Saturday mornings. Kristy remembers her son Charlie, at the time had only just started school, heard a customer ask for a bag of dog food, then proceeded to ask the customer if he needed any of the dog treats we had hanging near the counter. It surprises her how observant the kids are of their surroundings. What is your competitive advantage as a family business? As a family business customers understand that we are going to do all we can to provide great service as our expertise and local knowledge makes a real difference. We make sure to give the right advice and products to suit what is needed to get the job done. What does your business provide? Our business being mainly rural merchandise crosses over from supplying basic farming consumables to larger equipment like Woolpresses and sheep handlers. We are a diverse store that stocks a range of Laucke Stock Feeds and popular brands of pet food. Truro Agencies also sell Ride On Mowers and power equipment such as brushcutters and chainsaws, pumps and irrigation supplies and some general hardware lines.

What’s the history of your business? How did it begin? Bruce and Erica originally began the story of WEMS with Leo Nielsen, from whom they later purchased his half. Starting out on Stockwell Road, Angaston, with a small office and workshop, WEMS were predominantly doing on-site installations. It didn’t take long before our capabilities outgrew the location and we moved to our current site on Sturt Highway, Nuriootpa. We are now set up with a trade outlet as well as large workshop, offering multiple solutions – fabricated or off the shelf items – for our customers. We’ve been involved in a considerable amount of the Wolf Blass expansions over the years, installing many kilometres of wine lines, and we’re proud of the relationship we have built with them. Another project we embarked on more recently was a Lettuce Harvester for Rainbow Fresh at Lewiston.

This was a substantial sized project with the end product being a “one of a kind” lettuce harvester, designed and fabricated specifically to suit our customers needs. What are the strengths as a family business? We work hard on having great customer service and the satisfaction of our customers but we also strive to create a great culture where everyone contributes. As a family unit, we all work towards continuing to grow WEMS but know that all of our employees have important roles in our business and that succeeding as a team is what keeps us strong.

Our passion for the building industry began 20 years ago when Luke first worked for a family business in construction.
