“When a person thinks that everything is going wrong, something wonderful happens in his life” -Dalai Lama The Banzai Wellness Magazine’s first issue appeared on July 31, 2009. From that issue to this one, our 40th, started out as a quarterly publication and the last couple of years we have managed to publish Banzai on a monthly schedule. From day one our goal has been to provide our readers with quality educational resources. I was very passionate and very terrified at the same time. And as a result of taking those terrifying first steps towards creating that first issue, I have grown more as person than I ever knew I was emotionally or intellectually possible. Banzai Wellness was created to share new ways of thinking to promote Healing on personal and community levels; and to bring attention to the individuals and organizations that are making a difference. The look and feel of Banzai has changed during its 5 years of existence, but its purpose has remained the same. Running Banzai Wellness Magazine has been one of the most enjoyable experiences in my life, and I thank all of you readers, our sponsors, and contributors for making that possible. Please feel free to send us your comments as we value your input in our magazine and we encourage our readers to have a voice. If you have any ideas or suggestions, (new distribution point, article ideas, events for our calendar, etc.) you can email me directly at banzaiwellness@hotmail.com Thank you again for all of your support! www.banzaiwellnessmag.com

Foot Pain!

561-249-7520

How about we FIX the problem causing the pain! Let’s show those feet you walk on a little respect. They have been your foundation throughout your whole life and sometimes they need a little TLC. Common description of symptoms in my office on an initial visit: “In the morning the bottom of my feet hurt so badly!” “My heels hurts!” “I feel like I’m stepping on rocks!” “Towards the end of the day I can hardly put pressure on my feet!” One of the most common complaints in my office is foot pain. Often the foot pain has been an issue for months or even years with the patient. I always ask the question “what have you already tried to treat your foot?” Generally they have attempted to treat their foot pain previous to seeing me. However, the majority of the time the treatment was not successful and the next step would have been something more radical. What do we do? We realign the foot through small precise adjustments of the bones, muscle therapy, and can add support to the structure when needed. Because bones are always supported by muscles, and muscles are always attached to a bone, you can imagine that it is very hard to move one without affecting the other. This realignment, is what we do. We align these joints so that your foot has proper function again. Restoring proper function most often results in a decrease or elimination of pain. Imagine if the axel on your car is out of alignment. The brakes will start to wear faster and perhaps work with less control. Your tires start to wear unevenly. You start going through tires faster. You are constantly compensating your steering pattern and so on. THIS is what happens to your feet when there is a misalignment issue. You compensate one area and like dominos you wear and tear others. Then you start to compensate for a lack of function or pain, it generally causes even bigger issue. Most often when a patient comes in with these complaints they are treated and feel much better within a short time frame. Every case is different and is treated uniquely. Not every foot pain is caused from the same underlying problem, so a detailed history and exam will be taken at an initial visit, and an individualized treatment plan is made from there. Looks nice, right?

Wrong! Is Your Sleeping Position Killing You? In accomplishing my mission of removing interfering and destructive forces of the nervous system, it is often critical to restore balance and proper alignment of the spine. One of the habits that can be the most repetitively catastrophic occurs while you are asleep. Yes, I am looking at you stomach sleepers. Sleeping on your stomach can be as comfy as lying on a bed of freshly picked rose petals. Unfortunately, it is also a guaranteed way to create arthritis in you neck and destroy some of the most critical nerves that your body has. Let’s break it down. When you sleep on your stomach, you are forced to position your head in full rotation (in order to breathe). While this doesn’t feel too bad as you lie unconscious, imagine if you had to walk around with your head in this position for 6 – 8 hours during the day. Sound fun? The fact is that this position puts extreme stress on the ligaments in charge of maintaining cervical spine (neck) alignment. It also can be damaging to certain joints in your neck when done regularly.

Would you walk around in this position all day?

12 July/August 2014

If you happen to use a pillow under your head while you sleep in the prone position, you are also adding lateral flexion to your rotation, a particularly nasty combination. This is a position that methodically closes down the holes where your nerves exit your spine. In fact, doctors use this position when performing orthopedic test to identify nerve damage caused by the spine. If you routinely put your neck in this position, you are training your body to destroy those nerves, something I recommend against. The result = nerve destruction Eventually, symptoms may arise such as numbness in the arms and hands, neck discomfort, muscle spasm, etc. If left uncorrected, one can expect spinal arthritis followed by stenosis and disc disease, neuropathies including weakness in the upper extremeties, and organ dysfunction in places like the thyroid and lungs. If you often find yourself in this position, please consider getting checked by a chiropractor to correct any damage that has occurred as a result. I encourage you visit our office to learn helpful tips toward improving your sleeping position and in turn saving your body from significant and avoidable damage. GO AHEAD AND EAT! You can expect to build more muscles after 4 weeks of training as you begin timing your protein intake to support your weight training sessions at the gym. Just follow the basic timing rules below and you will improve your chances of achieving your best body ever. BREAKFAST Your brain needs an infusion of glucose to help you think clearly. The ideal morning mix is about 10 to 15 grams of protein with around 30 grams of carbohydrates. A cup of oatmeal made with low-fat or skim milk along with a piece of fruit and 4 egg whites would be a very good option. BEFORE TRAINING You should be eating 1 to 1 1/2 hours before you hit the gym. That mix should be about 15 to 20 grams of lean protein combined with 25 g of carbohydrates. Try 8 oz Low fat Greek yogurt, one small banana and one table spoon raisins. AFTER TRAINING You have 2 to 3 hours to take advantage of the post workout window. Your best option is a whey protein shake directly after a workout. It will almost instantly start the recovery process for you. After your recovery protein shake follow it with a balanced meal within two hours. 5 oz of grilled chicken, 4 oz of quinoa or brown rice, 1/4 avocado and 4 oz steamed vegetables is a good option. Email me any questions or topics that you would like me to cover. Happy training!

What if I’ve had Surgery Already? When it comes to severe neck and back pain, many people are desperate to find a way to make the pain stop. Concerns about the severity of the pain, along with the potential thought that they can lose function in their arms and legs lead people down the path of having a spinal surgery. Who can blame them? When you are dealing with a pain so bad, the comfort of your own bed is the only time you feel relief, then surgery really feels like the only option that you have. Many patients will get surgery on their neck and their back in hopes that they will have permanent resolution of their pain. While some lucky patients may get full resolution

of their pain, many people will find their pain returns within a few months or experience a new pain following a surgery like a spinal fusion. This is often classified as a condition called “failed back surgery syndrome”, which is a true code-able diagnosis. Following a surgery like this, patients who are still in pain often go down a road of pain management, and can become addicted to powerful narcotics like oxycontin and Percocet. Others will seek out more natural methods like acupuncture. Many patients after a spinal fusion are reluctant to have a chiropractor touch their

Banzaiwellnessmag.com

spine. After all, who would want someone twisting or popping a spine that has plates and screws attached to it? Fortunately, for these types of patients there is a better option. One of the reasons that orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons refer patients to my office is because I practice a form of chiropractic that focuses on correction of the Atlas. While many chiropractors rely on manipulation of all of the spinal joints to help the patient get relief, my office uses a very gentle and precise correction procedure that eliminates any popping, twisting, or cracking of the spine. The truth is, we can’t alter (nor want to alter) parts of the spine that are surgically fused. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t improve the lives of these patients. Many of the patients who continue to suffer after a surgery usually have a problem processing pain signals into the brain. Often times, the processing of pain is related to malpositioning of the head and neck. When the head and neck shift out of place, then signals from the spinal cord going into the brain get scrambled and misinterpreted. This usually results in the body being more sensitive to pain than it should. When we correct the positioning of the head and neck, the brain is able to re-establish normal circulation and the tension on the spinal cord become reduced. This allows for more efficient processing and communication between the brain and the rest of the body. The truth is, when the brain is talking to the body better, the body is able to deal with the problematic tissues that are creating those chronic pain signals through plasticity and neurological re-wiring. The best part of all, is that we don’t have to tinker with a part of the spine that is fused and locked in place. Unless the head has been surgically fused to the neck, there’s a good chance that the answer to your chronic pain may just be as simple as getting your head on straight again.

Marcus Welby, M.D. Alive and Well in Wellington How many of you remember the old television show, Marcus Welby, M.D.? The good doctor had a family practice that was typical back in the day. He really cared about his patients’ well-being and managed all scopes of patient needs while treating all ages, from newborns to the elderly. Most of us today believe that type of practice does not exist anymore. But fortunately for the residents of Wellington and the Western Communities, it does indeed! Our very own Marcus Welby, a.k.a. Dr. Richard Hays, has just that type of family medical practice. His office is located on the campus of Wellington Regional Medical Center and it is just the sort of medical practice he has always wanted. Dr. Hays was born in New York and talked about his family physician, who was his role model growing up. It was during those formative years when his interest in medicine, specifically family medicine, started to grow. At 10 years old, he moved to Palm Beach County with his family. He attended Johns Hopkins University and the University of Florida College of Medicine. After a three-year family medicine residency at Duke University, he came back home to Palm Beach County to begin his practice in 1986. Dr. Hays has served as Chief of Staff at Palm Beach Regional Hospital and Wellington Regional Medical Center, and was named President of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians. He was also chosen as the 2010 Florida

16 July/August 2014

Family Physician of the Year. For the past seven years, Dr. Hays’ office has been on the campus of Wellington Regional Medical Center. He likes keeping his practice personal and hands-on and has a particular interest in patients with diabetes. Dr. Hays noted approximately 10 percent of the adult population has diabetes and many of the cases are considered diet-related. Being a family practice physician, he treats all ages with a varied approach that includes women’s health, diabetes management and oncology. Although he has two physician assistants and two nurse practitioners in his office, he still makes time to personally visit all of his patients who have been admitted to Wellington Regional. As a result of the new affordable health care program, Dr. Hays says that he has seen an increase in the number of new patients to his practice. This, he feels, is an excellent indication that individuals are now being more proactive in managing their health. In September 2013, Dr. Hays took on the role of Chief Medical Officer at Wellington Regional Medical Center. In this role, he oversees all medical staff along with the medical education program at the hospital. Since it was built, Wellington Regional has become a hub for just about every facet of medical treatment. “Everything is right here on campus, including the da Vinci® surgical robot. Having such choices in medical treatments allows physicians to offer a complete continuum of care

for their patients,” says Hays. The campus is part of the Medical Arts corridor, which is still expanding. The goal is to bring education and other advanced medical to our area. Dr. Hays is part of an integral team working to bring additional areas of expertise to our local community. Wellington Regional Medical Center offers innovative approaches to patient care, including surgical robotics, expanding interventional radiology, advanced oncology treatment, neurosurgery and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Hays applauds the focus on clinical integration to elevate the quality of care. “It is our continued belief that hospitals and physicians must work together to continue striving to raise the level of all care within our community. A teamwork approach is what makes the future bright for medical care in Palm Beach County.” Dr. Richard Hays 1397 Medical Park Boulevard, Suite 220 Wellington, Florida 33414 561-784-0202 Contributing Editor Sandy Axelrod also published her own blog at HYPERLINK "http://www. foodandfondmemories.com" www.foodandfondmemories.com and teaches hands on cooking classes. I am

living proof. Seven months into my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. Suddenly, my baby and I were both in trouble and she had to be induced. Within moments of birth, Kaylee stopped breathing and had to be rushed to the NICU. I was terrified, but the doctors and nurses were wonderful. They let my husband stay with her and kept me informed. Because she was born so early, she had to stay in the hospital for a while, even after they sent me home. Leaving without her was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but the NICU nurses helped. They comforted me and provided Kaylee updates any time I called, day or night. They were so kind. And whenever I came to visit, they let me take care of her… They let me be “the mom”. Today, Kaylee’s the most spirited, happy and healthy one-year-old I know! I am living proof that everyone should choose Wellington Regional for childbirth.

The Other Stuff that Lives in the Water In 2012, the CDC conducted a study of 161 public swimming pools. Of those pools, Pseudomonas bacteria and E.coli were detected in approximately 58%! While the risk exists for infection for all swimmers, those wearing contact lenses are at significantly greater risk. Contact lenses in any type of water provide an ideal surface for bacterial growth and viral proliferation. Microorganisms abound in the ocean, hot tubs, and even potentially in shower water. But the greatest sources of contaminated water are stagnant bodies of water (lakes and rivers), and contact lenses should never be worn in these environments. A red, painful, lightsensitive eye with discharge following exposure to these bodies of water should be assumed infectious and treated immediately by your eye doctor. The Chemicals In addition to developing an eye infection from contaminated pool water, many swimmers develop inflammation of the cornea (keratitis) from the chlorine and other chemicals in the water. Red, irritated eyes immediately following swimming are a hallmark sign of this condition and warrant a rinse with saline and the use of preservative-free artificial tears to clear the surface of the eye of any residual chemicals.

Lost at Sea Need one more reason to leave the contacts at home? Your contact lenses may be lost at sea! Contact lenses are held in position on the eye by a layer of tears. In any body of water, a contact lens can easily be dislodged from the eye when it is exposed to water, as it is attracted to water. And lastly, chlorinated water and salt water have the innate ability to draw moisture from the contact lens itself, dehydrating it while it is on the eye. Not only can this make contact lens wear uncomfortable, it can lead to a very painful corneal abrasion when the contact lens is removed. The Bottom Line Avoid contact lens wear if you are going to be in and around water. If you have to wear contacts to find your way back to shore, wear a daily disposable lens and rinse your eyes immediately upon leaving the water, discarding the lenses as soon as possible. Also, consider prescription goggles as an alternative to your contacts. Stop into SeaView Eyecare and try the newest daily disposable contact lenses or a pair of prescription goggles and leave the pool with healthy eyes! The Leptin-Obesity Connection By Meroe Rabieifar, PharmD My Community Pharmacy Leptin. Yet another soldier in the battle of the bulge. Let me just preface by saying this was very confusing to me when I began researching the subject. I thought we want more leptin to aid in appetite control. Then I found that most obese people have an overabundance of leptin (which makes sense since fat cells secrete leptin). So... we want less leptin? But we need leptin in order to stop eating? Which is it? Is leptin good or bad? The answer is complicated. Leptin is the hunger and energy regulator. In times when the body has adequate adipose (fat) tissue, leptin is secreted from fat cells and binds to leptin receptors to signal the brain that there is plenty of energy and turns off the hunger response. Conversely, when fat storages are depleted, there is a lack of leptin and the brain’s hunger signals are switched on. That is exactly why obese people have copious amounts of circulating leptin in their bodies. But even though they shouldn’t be hungry, they still are. The problem is either the leptin is not reaching the receptors, or the number of effective leptin receptors have diminished. The latter is known as leptin resistance. Since, for most obese people, leptin supplementation does not help, the most likely scenario is dulled leptin receptors. The cause is probably our nutrient-poor, highly processed, far-removed from nature diet. When leptin levels are chronically high, the receptors stop reacting to them. We already knew a poor diet wrecks insulin balance; now another hormone is jumping on the bandwagon. There are several things you can do to get your

20 July/August 2014

leptin to the normal levels needed to maintain weight and energy. First, avoid fructose, especially high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Fructose actually appears to desensitize leptin receptors so even when leptin is present, the receptors aren’t binding. In addition, fructose increases triglyceride levels and triglycerides physically prevent leptin from crossing over to the brain. The result is the hunger mechanism stays switched on. Make sure you’re reading those nutrition labels! Next, avoid grains. Besides being high in carbs and leading to insulin resistance and diabetes, grains contain high levels of peptides called lectins that are thought to contribute to leptin resistance. Some lectins actually bind to leptin receptors, thus preventing leptin from doing its job. Lectins are also present in most other foods, like beans, soy, dairy, eggs, and even meat. Soaking, fermenting and cooking appear to reduce the concentration of lectin dramatically. When possible, soak your beans for 24 hours prior to cooking, soak raw nuts for 12 hours (then refrigerate if not consumed right away) and stick to fermented dairy and soy products. Get plenty of good sleep. Sleep appears to increase leptin levels significantly. Since stress produces cortisol, avoiding stress is key when trying to regulate sleep. High cortisol prevents the sleep hormone, melatonin, from doing its job. One way to beat cortisol is to take melatonin supplements. Melatonin supplementation has been shown to be safe in adults at hight doses. Generally, 1mg to 3mg taken before bedtime produces good

results in most people, although higher doses are possible. If you have questions regarding melatonin supplementation, stop by My Community Pharmacy (2615 State Road 7, Wellington) and one of the pharmacists will help you determine your needs. One last thing to avoid is ultra-low-calorie diets. Just like eating too much throws off your balance, so does eating too little. Eventually, your hormones will win out and you will eat. Constant dieting has been linked to lowered leptin production. When battling weight or energy issues, it’s best keep the big picture in mind. Something that might produce immediate results (severe caloric restriction) may end up hurting you in the long run (decreased leptin levels). Be kind to your body by avoiding foods that are harmful, eating adequate amounts of nutritious foods and getting plenty of sleep. Love and respect your body and, trust me, your body will love you for it!

Unfortunately, up until this point there hasn’t been much help or relief from the condition. The current treatment includes pain medication, anti-depressants, and now botox injections. While these methods may reduce the suffering of the patient, they are only temporary and do not get to the real cause of the migraines. However, with new research from both the medical and chiropractic community, hope may finally be here for long time sufferers. Dr. Scott Rosa, an Upper Cervical Chiropractor, has been conducting research with Dr. Raymond Damadian, medical doctor and inventor of the MRI, and what they have discovered is simply amazing. By using upright MRI’s, and CSF studies, they two believe they have found one of the major causes of migraine headaches. Everyday your brain is making about 500 cc’s of spinal fluid that acts kind of like the blood for the brain and spinal cord. Once this fluid is made in the brain, it is transferred out of the skull, down the spinal cord, all the way down your spine, where it finally gets pumped back up to the brain. This fluid is very important as it delivers essential nutrients to your central nervous system. Dr. Rosa’s research is showing that when someone is involved with a head-neck injury, such as a whiplash, the top vertebra of the neck, called the Atlas, or C1, will twist out of alignment. When this happens, due to its attachments to the brain, it will literally pull the cerebellum partially through the skull. The spinal fluid will then not be able to escape the brain, resulting in a backflow of spinal fluid. This backflow will cause swelling and will eventually crush the small blood vessels of the brain, resulting in a migraine headache. Dr. Rosa and Dr. Damadian have provided studies with images to show how the upper neck misalignment is affecting the flow of spinal fluid as well as blood flow. What is more impressive is that Dr. Rosa has also provided images after adjusting the upper neck that shows a complete reversal of the condition. Dr. Damadian has even stated publically that adjusting the atlas (C1) is a missing link in health care. While chiropractors have always had great success with migraine sufferers, this new research can pinpoint the exact reason why. The upper cervical spine (upper neck) is one of the most complicated areas

in the entire body. While almost all chiropractors adjust the upper neck, there are a group of chiropractors who specialize in adjusting the atlas and are commonly known as “Upper Cervical Chiropractors.” Typically, when an upper cervical chiropractor adjusts your neck, there is no twisting, popping, or turning of the neck. They use advanced imaging to assure a specific adjustment that will hold in place. It is a very gentle and safe procedure that has changed many lives. Dr. Kevin Davine is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor that practices in Boynton Beach, FL. What are GMO's and Why You Should Care

By Jon Lipshaw

What are GMO's? According to Nongmoproject.org "GMOs, or genetically modified organisms are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals." In other words they are crops that have DNA that has been un-naturally altered and are now resistant to the weed killing chemical Roundup because of this process. According to Naturalnews.com "Many genetically modified crops are engineered to produce their own pesticides and may even be classified as pesticides by the EPA." Roundup resistent crops are banned in every country except the US and Canada. The FDA claims that GMO's are safe but there's insurmountable evidence to the contrary. According to Responsibletechnology.org "numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced in 1996. The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems, and others are on the rise." There's also strong evidence showing GMO crops are more difficult to digest and don't allow full nutritional absorption. GMO's have also shown strong evidence that they lower your immune system's capabilities as well. According to multiple sources, GMO's have been shown to cause tumors in lab animals as well. The most common crops that are Roundup resistant in the US are corn (over 85% GMO), soy, yellow crookneck squash, zucchini, alfalfa, sugar beets, and milk. GMO's are actually really bad for the environment as well. Monsanto is the wealthiest company in the world that produces GMO foods and they're way of doing business is threatening the environment. This has become more apparent throughout the years. According to Geneticliteracyproject.org "The controversy began in 1999, when a paper in Nature concluded that pollen from Bt corn—which is genetically modified to carry a Bacillus thuringiensis gene that allows the corn to produce a toxin meant to kill pest insects—could kill monarch butterfly caterpillars." Now in recent years research has shown that monarch butterflies population has gone down every year. On top of that, Roundup has a chemical called Glyphosate which ends up seeping into aquifers. This leads to serious health effects to us and the environment.

There is a way to avoid GMO's - buy organic vegetables and fruit. If you're a meat eater, buy organic meat as well because it's still dangerous to your health to eat animals that ate GMO foods. So do you still find GMO food appetizing? That’s Dancing Gears Up for Nationals By Krista Martinelli This month I sat down with the talented young dancers at That’s Dancing, who will be competing on the national level at Dance Masters of America from July 4th to 11th in Orlando this summer. I also had the opportunity to interview Andrea LaMaina, coowner of That’s Dancing in Lake Worth, Florida. These young dancers are proud to represent That’s Dancing on a national level. It’s rare for a dance studio to achieve five state titles and send five students to Nationals, but That’s Dancing has come through with flying colors again this year. About the Dancers Morgan Reilly is in third grade at Sunset Palms, and she has one younger brother. She is currently holding the dance title of Miss Petite Florida. In addition to Dance Masters USA, she will compete in the On Stage America nationals this summer. Nick LaMaina is eleven and is a 5th grader at Sunset Palms. He is the son of Andrea LaMaina (co-owner of That’s Dancing) and he has a younger sister who also dances at That’s Dancing. He holds the title of Junior Mister of Florida. He will be training with the Joffrey Ballet this summer and also competing in On Stage America nationals this summer. Courtney Pirozzi is in 4th grade and goes to Binks Forest Elementary School. She holds the title of Junior Miss Florida and is very excited to compete on a national level this summer.

28 July/August 2014

Tatiana Nuñez is in 7th grade at Bak and is a dance major. She holds the title of Teen Miss Dancer Florida. She was awarded a 100% scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet, where she will be spending five weeks in training. Jillian Medero holds the title of Senior Miss Dancer Florida. She has two older siblings, Jessica and Jonathan. She graduates from Dreyfoos as a dance major this year. In addition to Dance Masters USA, she will compete in the On Stage America nationals this summer, along with Morgan and Nick. She has been dancing with That’s Dancing for fifteen years – she started at three years old. Next year she will go to Pace University in New York and major in commercial dance. AW: Morgan, how do you feel about going to Nationals? Tell us about the dance routine(s) you will be doing? What’s your favorite thing about dance? Morgan: Going to Nationals is “awesome sauce.” I will be doing a jazz duet with Nick and a lyrical routine. The best thing about dance is getting to express myself. AW: Nick, how do you feel about going to Nationals? Tell us about the dance routine(s) you will be doing? What’s your favorite thing about dance? What are the advantages of being a boy in this competition, if any? Nick: Going to Nationals will be a good experience. I’m doing the lyrical solo dance that I won (for Florida’s competition) with, as

well as a jazz duet. I really enjoy all of it at Dance Masters USA, except the stretching. The national competition gives us more experiences and more opportunities that really move our dancing careers forward. AW: Courtney, how do you feel about going to Nationals? Tell us about the dance routine(s) you will be doing? What’s your favorite thing about dance? Courtney: Super excited! And I can't wait to take all the DMA convention classes and grow as a dancer. I will be competing with an acro dance number with lots of hard gymnastic tricks and difficult choreography. My favorite thing about dance is that I am able to express myself, my emotions and my feelings. AW: Tatiana, how do you feel about going to Nationals? Tell us about the dance routine(s) you will be doing? What’s your favorite thing about dance? Tatiana: I feel super-excited and ready for Nationals. I will be doing the tap solo routine that I won the Florida title with and also a tap routine with Jillian. When it comes to dance, I really like learning different things every day and using what you know to teach other people. I want to be a dance teacher and I also want to have a part in a dance company. AW: Jillian, how do you feel about going to Nationals? Tell us about the dance routine(s) you will be doing? What’s your favorite thing about dance? Jillian: This is my fourth time going to Nationals, and I really look forward to seeing friends from past years. This is my last year at That’s Dancing, and then I’ll be going to Pace University in New York for commercial dance. I’ll be doing a lyrical solo and a tap duet with Tatiana at Nationals. My favorite things about dance are being able to express myself and being able to be versatile (in types of dance), as well as having the little ones at That’s Dancing looking up to me. Andrea: We are excited to go to Dance Masters USA again this year. It’s a non-profit organization that has been in existence for over 100 years. The dancers will have daily technique classes. We’re proud of our five dancers, who also competed in four regional competitions leading up to this summer. As we have learned, the more experience with judges, the more feedback, the better. Tatiana: Yes, these competitions help you mentally prepare for Nationals. Andrea: One of the great things about attending Dance Masters is that our students get to dance with other dancers of a very high caliber. Everyone who attends is there to work hard, so it’s very focused. Jillian: Because everyone is there to work hard, you push yourself. Tatiana: It’s better for us – it raises the bar higher. And we push harder when we’re there. Andrea: They have world-renowned choreographers and dancers working with them. It’s really the best of the best. And the current national title holders are also there competing. There are many benefits to attending this national

www.aroundwellington.com competition. For example, there is an interview portion of the competition, which helps the dancers be well-rounded and well-spoken too. AW: How do you handle nerves when you’re on stage? Tatiana: You have to believe in yourself. Just wash it away and then focus. Once you step on the stage, all of the nervousness goes away and you just rock it. It’s all about being prepared. Courtney: I am normally not nervous, but if I am - I just put my earbuds in and listen to my music while stretching and run my routine through my head. Andrea: All of our dancers have different strengths. Jillian is incredibly consistent. Tatiana responds well under pressure and is a true performer, surprising us with new things that come out in her final performances. Morgan is in her first season with our dance company, and she really comes to life on stage. She is meticulous when it comes to taking notes and feedback, incorporating those changes right away. Add a little about Nick and Courtney here? AW: What do you think makes That’s Dancing unique among the many local dance studios in our area? Tatiana: That’s Dancing is more like family and not as “forced” as other studios. They really get to know you and want to help you. All of the dance instructors truly try to help you improve. Jillian: In addition to being with That’s Dancing for fifteen years, I’ve been with the Fusion Force Dance Company for eleven years. The older girls are like big sisters to the younger dancers. My teachers have always pushed me to be the best that I can be. My teachers never gave up on me, even when I was going through a rough time. Morgan: The teachers are really nice. If you do something wrong, they just correct you right away. Nick: It’s like family here. For me, it is family! Even if my Mom didn’t own this dance studio, I’d dance at

That’s Dancing. It’s great to have role models like Jillian – we all look up to her. Andrea: Just as an example of how everyone is like family, Nick recently had a birthday party. He invited all 75 dancers from the Fusion Force Dance Company at That’s Dancing. And they all showed up, even though older ones. AW: What do you think makes That’s Dancing different, Andrea? Andrea: We try to have our students embrace their strengths. You don’t have to be like anybody else. It’s not a cookie cutter program – it’s focused on the individual. Tatiana: This is a very diverse dance studio, where they work on every type of dance. It makes everyone well-balanced. Andrea: Our dancers can walk into a hip hop class, for example, and do well. We’re not just focused on one thing (like ballet). It’s all about “finding you in your dancing.” Jillian: I’ve always had one type of dance class that’s hard for me, but when it comes to competitions, my scores are even across the board. It’s the versatility that makes the dancers at That’s Dancing great! AW: What are your favorite types of dance? Nick and Jillian: Lyrical and tap. Tatiana: Tap and point. Morgan: Jazz and modern. AW: Congratulations and good luck to you – Morgan, Nick, Courtney, Tatiana and Jillian! For more information about That’s Dancing, call (561) 642-9677 or visit their website www.ThatsDancing.com.

Independent Imaging, the Best in Early Detection Advances in early breast cancer detection have come a long way in the past ten years, as the doctors at Independent Imaging will tell you. Dr. Eric Baumel, Dr. Jonathan Huber and Dr. Thomas Kirchner gather around the computer monitor to demonstrate the amazing detail in “breast tomosynthesis,” also known as 3D mammography.

Dr. Thomas Kirchner, Dr. Eric Baumel and Dr. Jonathan Huber of Independent Imaging

Independent Imaging, located in Palomino Park in Wellington with three other locations, is the only site in the Western Communities offering this level of state-ofthe-art radiology, including the tomosynthesis. This is considered “the best of the best” in the industry. “Anything that can help us…and prevent a patient from coming back for additional visits, giving us higher level of confidence with the results is a very good thing,” says Dr. Kirchner, referring to their state-of-the-art technology. “The breast tomosynthesis and 3D mammography,” explains Dr. Huber, “is the only technical advance in decades in this field.” You can clearly see it on their faces – they are excited about this technology, which puts us light years ahead of yesterday’s methods of detection. “We catch early cancers all the time,” says Dr. Baumel. “And that’s the most rewarding part – when we can help patients find out exactly what’s wrong.” Dr. Baumel outlines the challenges of radiology with today’s patients. “When you talk about the key to good radiology, it’s basically a ‘Where’s Waldo?’ It’s all about finding the abnormality and putting it in the context of the patient.” This includes knowing the patient’s history, any past or present conditions and understanding the whole context. The three doctors are well-respected in our Wellington area medical community and have all originally worked in the local hospitals. Each doctor has been working in the field of radiology for approximately twenty years, bringing a wealth of expertise to their patients. Dr. Kirchner explains that this helps in two ways – first, it makes the local doctors more likely to call upon them and second, it is a great help that the doctors at Independent Imaging know exactly what is needed (and sometimes needed quickly) for doctor’s offices and patients. CEO of Independent Imaging Dr. Daniel Ghiragossian is proud of the excellent care, beautiful facility and successful results that Independent Imaging brings to patients every day. “The caring quality of our staff is infused in all of them from day one. If you treat everyone like you would treat your grandmother, you cannot go wrong.” He constantly reminds his staff that when a patient is coming in for testing, he or she is probably nervous about it. As they refer to him at Independent Imaging, “Dr. G” stresses that each staff member needs to have “the most respect for their patient’s condition” every time. “There is nothing that we won’t do to make sure that the patient is comfortable,” explains Dr. G. If the technologist shows appreciation for the patients and what they are going through, they are able to get the testing done and work with the anxiety at hand, he says. Also, keeping the process quick and efficient is also a great help to the potentially anxious patient. “Customer service is the core of what we do here,” says Staci Martin, Marketing & Development Manager for Independent Imaging.” From the person who greets patients at the front desk to the technician who reads the data, they are ambassadors of good service for Independent Imaging. Independent Imaging locations are in Wellington, in Lake Worth (near the JFK hospital), in Palm Beach Gardens and in Belle Glade.
