Why the Atlas and Why NUCCA? – A Case Study Jonathan Chung, Chiropractor

There was a case in my office last week that sparked the inspiration for today’s blog post. A few weeks ago, I began taking care of a patient with chronic daily headaches. Nothing had worked for this patient. They tried several different medications. Mindfulness therapy. Accupuncture. Herbs. You name it, it was already in his medical record. Our reputation for taking care of people with headaches in West Palm and Wellington has been growing due to a few great testimonials and success stories, and he decided to come and try to see if our Structural approach to chiropractic would help. Off to a rough start For most people with headaches as a Secondary Condition to Atlas Displacement, I sometimes sit on the verge of over confidence. When I take care of a headache patient, they almost always get better, and they usually start getting better very quickly. However, after the first couple visits, the headaches were basically the same, and in some ways, worse than when they started. That’s the difference between a doctor and a technician. Once we learn that something is not working, you have to come up with ways to solve the problem. Troubleshooting Protocols The main reason I use the NUCCA protocol for Atlas correction is that it relies on precision in order to get the job done right. It also has tools that allow the doctor to troubleshoot an alignment problem if one were to come up.

Instead of relying on sounds or touch to know if the spine is in a better structural condition, NUCCA relies on pre and post-correction x-rays to see if the job is getting done correctly. We also rely on precise angles to deliver an exact line of drive that is unique to each patient. Precise calculations are used to determine exact line of drive. Everything from the amount of force used during an alignment, the angle of the head on the table, to the measurements taken before a correction is a variable that can make a difference in the patient’s outcomes. Each patient has a unique measurement for their neck alignment. After the patient’s first 2 appointments, I knew that there was something wrong with how I was adjusting him. I needed to make a change. I looked at his first x-ray and noticed that something about the x-ray wasn’t perfect. I took a new x-ray to take a closer look, and the data from the new x-ray said to change the angle of his adjustment. My measurements were only off by 1 inch, and the angle I needed only changed by 1.5 degrees. My most standards, that seems insignificant. However, when you are working with the position of someone’s head and neck, 1.5 degrees can mean the difference between chronic headaches and living a normal life. A 1 inch difference in my stance could mean that the person’s head and neck get 60% better, or 90% better. When the Doctor Works, the Patient Wins

On the third visit, I used a new x-ray to modify the adjustment by 1.5 degrees and told him to check back the following week. When the patient came back, he said that he had a decent week. Here are the results: • Headache intensity went from a 8/10 to a 4/10 • Headache frequency went from constant headache throughout the day to daily headaches that come and go. • Headache would be worse in the middle of the day with increased activity, now increased activity had no role in headache severity. Needless to say, he was MUCH happier because now he had some hope that his condition could get better. Conclusion I’m not going to say that I can troubleshoot and solve everyone’s problem with NUCCA. However, NUCCA gives me a systematic method of modifying the Atlas Correction to allow me to leave the patient in a better structural position. In our office, we will never: • Sweet talk you, or convince you to keep giving us more time • Do the same thing over and over again without maximizing your results • Keep you hanging if you are not getting better We will always reassess our methods and find other ways to help you get to where you need to be. If we cannot solve your primary problem with Structural Chiropractic care, we will refer you to other experts who may. That’s our promise.

A most relaxing therapy awaits at The Salt Suite By Jennifer Martinez

If nothing else, the salt room is relaxing. Upon entering the white-walled, cave-like room, the outside world becomes distant, and all that awaits is a restful respite from the day’s ‘todo’ list. Of course, within the adult therapy room of The Salt Suite, clients are actually accomplishing quite a bit. Reclining in a comfortable chair with mellow, spa music flowing from provided headphones is happily considered wellness work. In the 45 minutes of serenity, clients are healing their respiratory systems, activating their immune system and calming any skin or lung inflammations. All of this simply by breathing deeply. The Salt Suite is one of a growing number of salt therapy locations that are giving clients an option for managing their asthma, allergies, bronchitis, cold/flu prevention, emphysema, sinusitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and smokers’ cough. The therapy also assists with skin disorders, cystic fibrosis and ear infections. The session itself is calming, stress management. Inside the therapy room, an environment is created to mimic the salt mines of Eastern Europe, where in the mid-1800s, it was discovered that mine workers rarely suffered from any respiratory disorders. Unrefined rock salt, which is primarily sodium chloride and other mineral salts, coats the walls and covers the floor in a thick sandy layer. Behind the scenes, a special machine, called a Halogenerator, circulates dry salt aerosol into the air. In microscopic form, the salt particles are almost undetectably absorbed and inhaled by clients, as they doze and sleep. When the dry sodium chloride enters the body, its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties do a number of healing maneuvers. Lung functions improve; nasal passages and lung tracts clear of toxins and pollutants; bronchial inflammation reduces; and later, clients may find their endurance has improved and their snoring has diminished. During a treatment, client may cough, as their sinuses begin to clear and open. “The benefits and effectives of halotherapy, also known as salt therapy, continue to be researched,” said Jessica Helmer, owner of the Salt Suite. “So much information exists to support our belief that this is a great treatment choice for those who suffer from allergy and respiratory problems. We encourage guests to visit us and experience a session. We are confident you will feel the results.” With two locations in Delray Beach and Lake Worth, The Salt Suite welcomes adults and children to their customized therapy rooms. Adults enjoy recliners with accompanying headphones, while children can romp in a therapeutic playroom filled with toys and games. Pricing can be customized for continual sessions, memberships or individual treatments. The first session is free. To learn more, visit www.TheSaltSuite.com or call 561-440-HALO (4256)

Cultural Corner The Art of Living: Are you a Stress Reducer or a Stress Inducer? Warning: This article contains strongly insightful language! In life, I find there are two different types of people in this world; stress reducers and stress inducers. “What does this have to do with the arts,” you might ask? Everything, but we’ll get to that later. Shakespeare said it best: All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts… As You Like It, Act II, Scene 7 On this stage we call “life,” what part do you actually play? I am not asking what part do you want to play, I am asking what character do you play? What type of effect do you have on the people around you and what type of effect do you have on your own well-being? I find that people who tend to be “stress reducers” have the following characteristics. They are: - Problem solvers - Patient - Compassionate - Hard-working - Gifted with good listening skills - Wisely proactive - Generous, but not to a fault - Unconditionally loving - Excellent at time management - Confident

- Maintain a degree of self-respect Most importantly, they are humble enough to admit to making a mistake. These types of people tend to have hobbies, are constantly learning and are open-minded to new things. Unfortunately, those who are stress inducers have character flaws that they rarely recognize. They are: - Jealous - Bossy - Critical - Hurtful or don’t think before they speak - Disrespectful of one’s space, property and private time - Liars or cheaters - Self-absorbed and feel the world should revolve around him/her - “Dumpers” (they dump their problems on you as if you have none of your own) Often this type of character has no sense of self-worth and is constantly seeking fulfillment, rarely aware that contentment comes from a sense of completion. Sometimes, there’s a third party involved. Now think about this SLOWLY: the stress inducers aggravate the stress reducers, who THEN turn to another stress reducer for help. Sounds like an episode of Downton Abbey, right? Now, don’t get all huffy if you have one or two of the characteristics in both of the inducer/ reducer categories. That’s to be expected at times. We are all human beings with instinctual

responses. What is most important is to recognize that we are all works in progress and we can hone our personalities. I am often reminded of the scene in the Wizard of Oz… All the cowardly lion needed was a medal for courage and the scarecrow was given a diploma for society to recognize that he was smart. This is where living a cultural life steps in. YOU can be both the artist and the work of art. YOU can mold or sculpt yourself in any manner you wish. If you are a stress reducer, then you are the kind of person who recognizes that there is always room for improvement. If you are a stress inducer, you have to calm down and take control of your own life. You may very well be hurting those you love most, unintentionally. A very wise friend, Mr. Johnny Bergstrom, once told me to post the following words on a post-it note in my office: “I am a work in progress and I’m okay with that.” Quite frankly, I have found those words to be helpful on many occasions. I try to recognize all the beauty that surrounds me. In addition, in the small amount of spare time I have, I try to learn something new. In turn, I use the techniques learned to be more creative. Being inventive and imaginative is extremely stress reducing. Make a list. Write down things you would really like to do more of. For example:

10 April/May 2015 April2015 Banzai Magazine.indd 10

4/7/2015 10:42:36 PM

- Read books: stop by the library, download some audio books or eBooks - Paint or draw - Write poetry or song lyrics - Shut off the news and listen to music in the car - Try your hand at photography (most cell phones have great cameras) - Plant a colorful bed of flowers in your garden - Take up a craft or hobby like beading jewelry or woodwork - Appreciate a sunrise or sunset: you have two chances daily - Look back at some old photos that bring back good memories - Take a few moments each day to get some fresh air. When you do, observe the beauty around you. Listen to the sounds of nature: the birds, the breeze and the rustle of leaves. I could go on - but I think you get the message by now. Simply:

The Energy of Feng Shui Hello everyone and welcome to my little corner in Banzai Wellness Magazine. I’m Vince Nitti, your local realtor, and it is my pleasure to write and share articles on everything to do with real estate. A little about myself. I have been a Realtor for over nine years specializing in the Palm Beach County area. Prior to real estate I was an airline captain for 25 years. While still flying I obtained my real estate sales associate license and embarked on a part time venture in real estate sales. This allowed me to learn the business and grow as a Realtor. In 2012 I took a very early retirement from flying and went full time as a Realtor. In 2013 I proudly obtained my real estate broker’s license, thus furthering my education and elevating my status among my fellow agents. I am also a member of the National Association of Realtors, The Institute of Luxury Home Marketing and posses a Graduate, Realtor Institute designation from NAR.

Today I want to focus on how real estate affects your health. Where you live and what amenities your home and community afford you can play a huge part in your well being. Let’s think about it. Just about everything around you touches you physically and mentally. Are you happy with your home and its layout? What about your yard? Does your community have amenities such as a pool, tennis courts, a jogging trail, or even somewhere you can meditate? Are there healthy places to eat nearby? All of this can affect your well being and lifestyle. Many of us take these issues for granted or just settle with what we have even if we are not happy or excited about our situations or where we live. Your environment is you and conversely you are your environment. Fortunately here in South Florida we are first and foremost blessed with great weather, even in the summer months. Secondly we posses beautiful beaches and parks for super outdoor

fun. Last we have an abundance of entertainment, night life and activities so there really is no chance to stop moving around here. In other words couch potatoes need not apply. In addition to the outdoors and what it offers is your home and everything inside it. We may kid around about Feng Shui but this stuff really does work. It has been proven an uncluttered and well decorated home provides for a better mindset which in turn helps out physically. Just a little bit of cleaning up (I’m guilty too, just see my desk sometimes) and maybe some bright paint can make all the difference in the world. All this will also pay off if you decide to sell your home as the condition of the house is the second main reason why it will or will not sell. So Feng Shui it and it will reward you physically, mentally and financially. I’d say that’s a trifecta! Stay tuned for next month where we’ll talk about selling your home. See you then!!

lose by trying one more product, so I used it for a month applying it in the morning and at night. Within thirty days I was shocked by the results and I wanted more! My mother informed me that the company had a program in which you can get your product

free by referring three friends. I immediately began sharing with my friends this incredible product and how they also could get it free. It was so easy getting my free product and everyone loved it that I got interested in the business side of it. I quickly got informed and saw how I could take part in a billion dollar industry with a company that had been just two years in the market and was expanding globally. The idea of having my own business from home, being able to spend quality time with my kids and not living from pay check to paycheck was something I always dreamed of. Since being a part of this company however, I have received so much more than that! Nerium’s mission is to “make people better” and it has done exactly that. I have grown so much as a person in such little time and have had the opportunity to change so many lives and help others become better and improve their quality of life. This little bottle has been such a blessing in my life!

Look Better, Live Better As a young stay at home mom of two boys under two and full time college student the last thing I wanted to do was add more to my already busy schedule. Nerium came into my life when my mother who is an esthetician told me about Nerium Firm and all the amazing things it does, I did not believe it. After trying hundreds of dollars’ worth of products, I had given up. With my first pregnancy I gained 50 pounds and a whole lot of “tiger stripes”. With my second pregnancy the little areas that had gotten away without a mark became even worse than the first ones. Before kids I lived 24/7 in a bikini so not being able to wear one was really depressing. However, I did not have anything to

The Most Ordinary Eye Injuries Can Be Avoided When most people go about their daily lives, the last thing they think about is protecting their eyes, which is why more than one million people suffer from eye injuries each year. However, Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute’s refractive cataract, glaucoma and comprehensive care specialist , Jason Gorscak, M.D. says that "90 percent of these eye injuries could have been prevented if the individual was wearing appropriate protective eyewear (with “ANSI Z87.1” marked on the lens or frame). "I tell people to keep a pair of goggles in the trunk for when they need to jump-start their car," says Dr. Gorscak. "Battery acid sparks and debris flying from car batteries can severely damage the eyes." A person doesn’t have to be away from home to experience an eye injury, either. Many household chemicals, such as cleaning fluids, detergents and ammonia, are extremely hazardous and can burn the eye's delicate tissues. When using chemicals, Dr. Gorscak advises everyone to always read instructions and labels carefully, work in a well-ventilated area and make sure spray nozzles point away from you and others before spraying. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after use. “I also warn people about one of the most dangerous activities, in terms of eye injuries," adds Dr. Gorscak. "Each year hundreds of people end up with terrible eye injuries and burns from backyard fireworks and the majority of victims are bystanders and children. I tell all my patients 'Go see a show put on by the pros - it's safer, cheaper and more spectacular.'”

Allergy Studies With a Few Surprises

Health Mart Wellness

Nearly one in 10 kids deals with allergies. That includes hay fever and respiratory, food, and skin allergies.1 That’s a lot of sniffling and sneezing and itching and wheezing! It’s not any wonder that researchers keep trying to figure out ways to relieve some of this suffering. Here’s a snapshot of a few recent allergy studies that reveal a few surprises about allergies in kids. Too clean? Think twice before going overboard with the cleaning supplies. A recent study found that inner-city newborns exposed to a too-clean home were more vulnerable to allergies and asthma later in life.2 Surprisingly, the more rodent, roach, and cat allergens they were exposed to, the better. Allergens plus bacteria appeared to be the most protective. This study supports what’s called the “hygiene hypothesis.” What does that mean? When homes are too clean, young kids’ bodies might not develop the right responses to allergens like cat dander. Maybe cleanliness isn’t really next to godliness! The study needs more follow-up, especially since it reverses the results of earlier studies. So, don’t rush out and adopt a cat (or let your house become infested!) But stay tuned for more on this topic. Moo! Exposure to microbes may also be behind another study’s recent findings. In rural areas of Sweden, researchers

found that kids growing up on dairy farms had one-tenth the risk of allergies as kids living in other rural areas.3 The study found for the first time that delayed development of immune systems puts youngsters at risk for allergies. So the researchers suspect something on these dairy farms is helping their immune systems to mature. Speaking of milk (and eggs). Researchers recently surveyed more than 300 caregivers of kids about their kids’ allergies.4 What they found surprised them. Parents weren’t most anxious about peanut and tree allergies—which are the most severe. They were most worried about milk and egg allergies. In a way, it makes sense: Milk and eggs are used in so many dishes. It may be harder for parents to keep track of them. Fortunately, about two-thirds of the parents surveyed clearly understood how severe their child’s allergic reaction was. This is important because it’s necessary to have a clear plan of action to handle your child’s reactions. In severe cases, you might even need to give your child epinephrine. Where you least expect it. Allergens can show up in unexpected places. A recent report about a skin allergy in an 11-year-old boy is a good example.5 Doctors finally traced the problem to the nickel in his iPad. Covering the iPad

solved the problem. According to some doctors, skin allergies like this are becoming much more common. This report is a good reminder to consider the effects of metallic electronics and other potential sources of nickel exposure such as clothing fasteners and ear piercings. If any of your kids suffer from allergies, consult with your doctor. You might need referral to a special doctor (an allergist). I can also answer your questions about allergy medications and point you to products in our store to help ease symptoms. Nothing herein constitutes medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, or is a substitute for professional advice. After working in the restaurant industry for approximately 8 years, I have noticed that sizes of appetizers, entrees and desserts have progressively become larger in portion size than ever before. My experience is that people associate more food with better value. That is true to a point, however the state of our nation’s obesity challenges are going in the wrong direction. Approximately 67% of the United States is overweight/obese and the statistics are growing. The law for nutritional labeling in restaurants was passed in March, 2010. Most restaurant chains are making the transition, however not all are following suit. Also, is the consumer really making the conscious effort to ask about the information or actually able to decipher the information out there? What is the solution? Here are some easy to follow suggestions to help guide us in the right direction. When I dine out, I follow some simple choices that allow for moderate consumption of food and beverages without overindulging. 1. Ask the waiter for a “to-go” box immediately after ordering so you can put ½ the oversized entrée/appetizer aside. This will allow for you to see that the remaining portion will be adequate and you will not go home “busting at the seams.” 2. Share an appetizer and entrée if you are dining with a guest. It is also more cost effective, even if there is a sharing cost on the menu. 3. Order broth-like soups/non-dressed salads to help with hunger. 4. Some restaurants are offering smaller cuts/lunch sizes of fish, chicken, or beef on entrees. Inquire when ordering with the waiter. The worst thing they can say is no! 5. Order and consume lower calorie beverages with the meal. Fluids can help with satiety. Going “half” way is the best way for weight management. One will find when we practice these principles daily, at holidays, and special occasions, we can reduce these statistics. Remember, we only have to do it “one meal at a time.” Adam Lax RDN/LDN/RD4U,Inc. 954-292-5625 www.infinityweightmanagement.com

uinoa, that is very intense in terms of protein, contains all amino acids, A,B,C,D,E, and K vitamins. Because of the plup-fiber ratio is very high, cholesterol absorption descend to minimum level. It is top of the list for sports nutrition, without need to animal proteins and some synthetic protein powders. It also very delicious... Because it is a grain in bulgur consistency, it can be replaced with some traditional flavours of Turkish Cuisine. Pro Tennis Lessons

Luke Stephens

(Former Touring Pro) Challenging, fun, experienced & skilled

MotivationBy Luke Stephens If you leave it up to 95% of kids they will want to play on their iPad, watch TV, and do whatever nonsense involves wasted time. Having said that, are you not the same? If your boss called ya and told you to take the day off, how are you spending the day? Are you going to the gym or are you watching on demand TV? Are you eating a taco or are you going running? You have to set short term goals for long term success. The journey is not the light at the end of the tunnel, but it is the many mini victories along the way. Hopefully I have motivated those of you that have no interest in tennis to give your life a little bit more pep. Now go on your way. Go ahead…go be valuable. Alright tennis people! Here we go! How many hours per week are you playing tennis? Don’t you realize how good it is for your health?! Put some more hours in. Two hours a day 3 days a week will make you so much better than you already are. How is your weight? Go out and play more often and you will see instant results. The mini victories will get you to that waist line you want! Don’t’ just go out there and play a match either. There is too much time between points. Drill for a minimum 30 minutes every time you are on the court unless it is a regulated league or tournament match.

Giving kids individual athletic actives such as golf and tennis will enhance their potential of accountability later in life and fine tune their focus and work ethics. -STEPHENS TENNIS

You know that whole 10,000 hours thing they say about getting really good at something? Well it can be a lot less if you do things the right way. Break your practices and hitting sessions apart. Don’t do everything every time. Have you ever spent 30 minutes just hitting backhands down the line? Recognize your weakness and get it better. Recognize your strengths and make it a lethal weapon! For those of you that have kids simply apply all of the above to them. It will pay off down the road. Any job I have ever had I have never had a problem “smoking” my coworkers and also my boss. Why? My dad/coach on the tennis court was pushed me and pushed himself to motivate. Now he tells me to take it easy on my daughter…I push her too hard. Push your kids people! It will pay off late.
